Welcome to

HEART of the CITY 2019! The festival that celebrates music, arts, and spoken word in the heart, from the heart, and for the heart! Momentum is a funny thing. We continuously move ahead every day, but it’s in its recognition where growth can take place. We each overcome challenges, take risks, and try our best to take one (or several) big steps forward daily. Yup, you may have guessed – or already have known – this year’s festival is all about “keeping the momentum going.” We continue to make strides in building more community partnerships by supporting artists from all backgrounds and mediums, and bringing widened awareness of the formidable art in the heart of the city. Keep the mission of momentum close to the heart of the community. We are deeply grateful for each individual involved – from artists and volunteers, to attendees – you all make this celebration move further forward, each and every year. Charity Slobod President, Heart of the City Festival Society of Edmonton

The Heart of the City Festival Society recognizes that we are assembling on Treaty 6 Territory, traditional lands of many First Nations of Canada, Plains and Wood Cree, Stoney Nakota Sioux, Blackfoot, and Métis, to name a few. Heart of the City respects and celebrates the many different cultures of all the people who gather on this land now and before and welcomes you to celebrate with us. The Board of Heart of the City recognizes that words have less power than actions, so we encourage you to visit Truth and Recognition Commission of Canada’s Call to Action Report at nctr.ca to educate yourself on positive actions that can be taken to ensure inclusivity and community become the main focus of moving forward in Canada.

southern twang, tender melodies, and stompin’ rhythms is turning heads, stomping feet, and stirring souls on both sides of the 49th parallel.

FKB FKB, the high-energy rock band based in Edmonton, has had a whirlwind past few years. Between releasing four singles and three music videos, they have performed over 120 shows in the last year-and-a-half in Canada and the United States.

Jacquie Daniels and the Jokers Jacquie Daniels & The Jokers, are going all in and laying down their royal flush. With Metis Blonde Bombshell, Jacquie Daniels, or as she goes by, “Queen of

4

Rock”, her and the Jokers are the band to beat, with their hard-hitting rock riffs accompanied by Jacquie’s sultry blues-inspired voice.

Kane Incognito Hailing from the stark, prairie metropolis of Edmonton, Kane Incognito is the dynamic brainchild of Eric Kane Cherrington. After the loss of his brother and No Heat Tomorrow bandmate, Keeth Cherrington, Eric turned to music and formed Kane Incognito with his cousins, Austin and Braydon Shaw and childhood friend, Stephen Schoenthaler. The result is a deep blend of folk and rock music that is best described

as the love child of Mumford & Sons and Kaleo.

The Give ‘Em Hell Boys The Give ‘Em Hell Boys combine old fashioned country soul with rock ‘n’ roll swagger and punk rock attitude, reviving the power that is at the heart of the country genre. Their live show stands above all else. It’s impossible not to dance, toe tap and have a great time with their music. With positive reviews following in the wake of their performances which have spanned

the globe, The Give ‘Em Hell Boys are bringing back the days of Cash, Williams, and Jennings.

Deadly Nedly Deadly Nedly is a DJ, sound engineer, and producer born and raised in Edmonton. His heart burns for his city and the people in it. Ned demonstrates that through his consistent work here in Etown.

Brother Octopus Since forming in 2011, Brother Octopus has been heavily involved within the Canadian music scene. They’ve performed alongside notable artists such as Hollerado, Buffy Saint-Marie and Fred Penner.

Form 10 Priding themselves as Edmonton’s musical mental health champions, the name Form 10 is a way express their passion for the cause, gained from first-hand experience as well as observations from member careers as first responders and emergency medical aid providers. “Without music, we are all lost,” states guitarist Aaron Taylor. “Through music, we can help support each other and find a greater inner peace in one another.”

Lia Cole The moment a five-year old Lia Cole eagerly learned the chords G and C to pull off “You Are My Sunshine” on the acoustic guitar, music became her heart and soul. In typical Lia Cole fashion, she ended the same home video with a resounding soulful riff overtop a hard hitting power chord, that would give the world insight into her undying talent to create her own sound. With deep soulful influences ranging from Bill Withers to Etta James, combined with the young sound of pop icons like

Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, Lia Cole’s sound captivates audiences and stands completely on its own.

Art My Dear Heartisans, Heart of the City Festival would not be what it is today without your undying love and support. It has truly moved us to see the dedication the community of Boyle/ McCauley has for the arts in all its forms. Many people have found salvation in turning their pain and struggle into something tangible and unique, something they can share with others, something to connect with so that they may be understood. Boyle/McCauley is the Heart of the City; through community, art, music, and a general understanding that although life is not always perfect, art in all its form is a transformative tool. This neighbourhood thrives and shows the rest of the city what heart looks like. It has been, and continues to be an honour to be a part of something so magical, enlightening, and transformative. We would not be who we are today without this connection to the Heart of the City and we thank you for sharing your neighbourhood with us for the last 16 years. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Hay Hay! Fay - Art Director, Heart of the City Festival

He has appeared on the Heart of the City stage with the hip hop group Verbal Architects and works in the local film scene in the art department on various shows including Caution:

May Contain Nuts, and Knuckleball. Micky created the central image for this year’s festival and will be at the festival creating live art.

Northern Natural Soap Co.

Kira Homeak and Devon LePage started Northern Naturals Soap Co. after realizing they both shared a passion for creating natural body and hair care products. Wanting to move away from the commercial products that use chemicals, artificial fragrances, and preservatives that are harmful to the environment, they began to develop recipes made from completely natural ingredients. Taking their dedication to sustainability even further, they decided not only their products but their packaging should be as environmental-

ly friendly as possible. This is how they came up with the idea to have their products refillable. Almost all products can be refilled for a discounted price, and any products that can’t use recycled materials for their packaging.

Roseanna Nay and Brad Fehr

are an Edmonton-based collaboration which began in 2018. Their group work explores relationship dynamics through crafting, performance, and video. Individually they create visual art through drawing, painting, sculpture, and whatever is on hand. Both are highly invested in personal narratives and re-using symbols in new contexts. Their art has appeared across Edmon-

ton in pop-up shows, public venues, and print as well as internationally.

Street Prints Artist Collective

is co-facilitated by e4c, Inner City Rec & Wellness Program, Bissell Centre and Boyle Street Community Services. This project brings together inner city artists from diverse backgrounds to work together towards the creation, promotion, planning, and sale of their artwork, reducing barriers and creating inclusive and accessible artistic

opportunities for our artists. Visit us at facebook.com/streetprintscollective.

Cliff Travis is a contemporary mixed-media artist

born and based in Edmonton. Cliff is self-taught and has produced graphite drawings since his youth. His recent focus has turned to abstract paintings characterized by heavy textures. He is constantly experimenting with new techniques/materials, as well as painting/drawing hybrids. Cliff has been a resident artist at Lotus Art Gallery and has had works in their exhibits for more than a year. Cliff was recently featured as artist-of-the-month in the July 2018 edition of Edmonton Muse e-magazine. His work can also be seen on his website, clifftravis.ca.

Art Workshops Coil Pot Pottery

Painting Records

Talented pottery artist, David Molaro, will show you how to create your very own pottery piece using the coil pot method. These pots are so named for the technique used to build the structure, ropes of air-dry clay are coiled on top of one another until the desired height is reached and then smoothed to create a classic looking shape. Until supplies run out.

Ever wonder what happens to old records that no one wants to listen to? They go to the Reuse Centre, and then we pick them up and bring them to the festival for you to make your very own masterpiece with! They’re easy to hang at home because of the nail sized hole in the middle. Or if you would prefer a colourful fruit bowl just let them sit in the sun and then mold them how you want. Come enjoy vinyl records in a new way!

Collaborative Art Project

Textile Wall Art

Heart of the City has invited Jemma Forgie to sculpt a large heart from chicken wire that shall be hung from the big tree by the arts tents. She will be there from 1-4 both days, to curate a collaborative art project during which time patrons of the festival will help add to the sculpture, with textile, yarn, and other bits and bolts, to create a beautiful work of biological art!

Do you have some left over fabric? Ever wondered what to do with it? Heart of the City’s art director Fay Fey will be leading a workshop that shows you how you can turn some leftover fabric and a stick into a beautiful wall hanging!

Three R’s Button-making Do you have a jar full of bottle caps or pop can tabs? Did you know you can use those to make unique buttons? Matthew O’Berto will show you how to use reuseable things, such as bottle caps, or pop tabs, to create unique and fun buttons of your very own.

Kids’ Craft Table Bring your children over to the art tents for a break from the sunshine (or rain) and make some cool crafts, or colour the central image for this year’s festival. We will have all kinds of things from pipe cleaners, to pencil crayons. The creative world is their oyster! The kids’ craft table will be manned by a festival volunteer, but please, leave no children unattended.

Tie Dye Get creative and have fun with this elusive art. Our volunteers will show you some techniques to create your very own tie dye T-shirt! Bring your own from home, or purchase this year’s commemorative T-shirt. You could even do some research before you come and try your hand at some more complicated patterns. Guaranteed fun for the whole family!

Bios

Youth Stage

Katelyn Gariepy is a 14-year-old singer and musician from Sherwood Park. She has been performing around the city for two years. Katelyn has performed on the Homegrown Talent Stage at Big Valley Jamboree, at local coffee shops, music showcases and fundraisers. Lately she can be found busking at two area farmers’ markets. With a sense of love, acceptance, and celebration, Baby Boy and the Earthly Delights nods to its predecessors while taking roots/reggae music to new heights. Baby Boy started from a solo acoustic project to a collaborative effort precedent on bringing a new wave of reggae music to ears of Edmontonians. From melodic horns to spacey keys, with wailing guitar solos and a rocksteady groove, Baby Boy and the Earthly Delights is a delight for the eyes and the ears.

Stella Johnson is a 15-year-old

singer songwriter from Edmonton. Stella is experimenting with writing and playing multiple instruments. Stella started performing alongside her dad, Steven Johnson when she was two, accompanying his guitar with harmonica and later voice. Some of Stella’s musical influences are Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and Jack White – as a music lover it’s hard to narrow down the list. Stella has enjoyed playing a variety of venues and festivals in the last few years and is excited and grateful to be performing at Heart of the City Festival

Robin is a Metis, pop-alternative musician from Alberta. Robin’s very recent triumphs include her first music releases on all popular streaming platforms. With the guidance and support of Grammy award-winning producers in NYC and LA, Robin has captured her unique voice and style and produced something powerful and captivating. Most recently, Robin has had the honour of having her single, Waiting on You on the Indigenous Music Countdown for 21 consecutive weeks and featured on indigenous radio stations. Born in Niagara Falls and raised on both sides of the border, Quincy Little aka S’rReaL is part Canadian, part American, and a full-fledged independent thinker. An individual who questions everything, he’s pretty weird as expected. He doesn’t like to be cat-

egorized so he prefers to be simply called an artist although his performance art is mainly auditory. If you like double-time rhymes, multifaceted metaphors, and wizardly wordplay that pushes for growth in all possible senses, you’re in for a treat.

Bringing influences of alternative and acoustic music, Darrien is right in the middle. He has played at coffee shops around Edmonton and has played the Heart of The City CreArt Youth Stage for the past two years. He is very excited to show you what he’s got and hopes you enjoy!

pH15 is composed of two best friends who realized that their mutual love of music would bring them closer together. They have been playing together for almost a year and feature covers of Arctic Monkeys, Lord Huron, The Milk Carton Kids, Of Monsters and Men, and many other indie, rock, and folk groups. Although their name may be basic, the music they play certainly isn’t. They are working towards writing their own music which they hope to share in the fu-

ture. Isaac Friesen plays the piano and George Zhang plays the guitar in this duet.

Sponsors and Partnerships We love our sponsors! They support us in many ways, not always with money, though we definitely appreciate the money! Without our sponsors we would not have tents, stages, tables, chairs, water, food, t-shirts, posters, sound systems, advertising, and frankly without our sponsors we’d just be a bunch of artists and musicians standing in a field for two days. We are very glad to have such great sponsors! If you would like to be a part of a local arts and culture festival, and you have some money for sponsorship, we want to hear from you! Volunteers

As our festival grows and develops we are finding new ways to support all forms of art in the core of Edmonton, but we can’t do it alone! We depend on a team of volunteers to make the festival a reality every year. Setting up tents, tables and chairs, working in the info tent, face painting, workshops, designing, communicating, planning – the list of things that must be done to get this festival running each year is massive, and the team of volunteers, board members, and community members that work together to make it happen is large and grows every year. Help us build momentum and join in the fun too this fall as we prepare for 2020!
