From around 1910 to the late 1920s, European cloth boudoir or bed dolls, also known as “Eggheads,” due to the oval shape of their heads, featured hand-painted faces on linen. These Art Deco dolls, intended to be dressed by the buyer, were commonly used for bed or boudoir chair decoration and were in high demand during the 1920s. One such doll is currently on sale at Amy Renee’s Kreative Touch in West Allis, WI. 7219 W. Greenfield Ave., West Allis, WI. 414-763-4487. @amyreneecraig. SHiNDiGS

SHiNDiGS owners Bill and Sue Gessert talk about their business.

How long has SHiNDiGS been in business? Is this your 1st business?

Shindigs has been in business for six years now. It started off as a little business that would keep us busy in our retirement years. Our “real jobs” were owning and operating hardware stores.

How did you get started? What made you choose the location you did?

We missed being retailers and thought having a gift shop would fill that void. Choosing a location was interesting, we looked at many small town options and fell in love with downtown Hartford. Cream city brick is a favorite, and when we were able to buy the old JC Penny store, it seemed like a perfect fit.

What changes have you seen over the years open?

Well of course through our 47 plus years of retailing we never experienced anything like Covid. Our little shop was not considered essential but the support of the city was amazing and we were able to keep things going.

What do you most Love about your Industry?

Our love of retailing is different for both of us, I would say Bill was brought up in retail and worked hard from a child thru his adult life. He has an incomparable work ethic and can do anything. My passion is to find things either old or new that you may have never seen before, and then to display them in a beautiful setting. What is your favorite time of the year at the shop?

The shop absolutely is at its best in fall and winter. We have always embraced the Holidays with a “go big or go home” attitude. All of our guests are coming in to find that one gift or item for their home that sets them apart. It’s actually why we chose the name Shindigs, we want you to have a beautiful home to host fabulous get togethers with just the right gifts. Our best days are when we can help someone achieve that goal.

SHiNDiGS

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

One myth that I guess we would actually like to perpetuate, is that running a shop is all fun and easy to do. We like it when guests say they just want to move in and hang out with us. But there is a lot of work that goes on by our fabulous employees to keep the shop looking its best and giving our guests that sense of calm.

What message would you most like to share with people they may not know?

Events? Sales? Back entrance available?, Markdown area in back?

The shop has a front and back entrance, making it easier to access during the winter, there is a nice size parking lot in back. The back entrance also has an area for our bargain hunters, you can always find something on sale there.

What would you like people to know about your business? Specific lines you carry year round you love?

There really is something for everybody at Shindigs, we carry a very unusual mix of merchandise year round. Some of our best items are anything one of a kind(vintage)..also Jelly Cat which is a line of plush toys from London that have exploded to include adult collectors, to all the items that smell so good. We carry Tyler Candles, they make a laundry detergent that is heavenly. We are sure to have something you love!

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

I love it when our guests tell us we made their day, because really that’s what it is all about, either a problem solved or just inspiration for them to go home and make some changes to lift their spirits.

What are you most proud of?

Being a husband and wife team that truly enjoy working together. It’s such a blast to have someone with you that shares the vision.

How many employees/Family work with you?

We are the very proud employer of 4 outstanding human beings, all from whom we have learned from and enjoy working with. Plus a handful of retired employees who are considered life long friends.

What are you most grateful for?

Wow, tough question, there are so many things everyday to be grateful for. But seeing as this is asked in a business manner, of course all of our wonderful guests who are so faithful to shop local at Shindigs, the beauty of Midwest values and loyalty are not found everywhere, so I would say that is something to be very grateful for. Most grateful of all for, Our Lord and Savior Jesus! ~

This is an excellent cast iron Santa Claus. He’s very heavy and in beautiful condition. He’s solid cast iron and weighs about 13 pounds. I know, I know! He’s not very fat, but he’s pretty darn heavy. We think he’s from the early 1900s. That’s young for a Santa, but old enough to be an antique. Available at Pardeeville Antique Mall, located at 103 Industrial Drive, Pardeeville, WI. Buddy, “The Greeter”

Eclectic Avenue

How long have been in business?  Is this your 1st business?

I opened my brick and mortar store here in Downtown Port Washington mid-August 2017. This is my first business.

How did you get started? What made you choose the location you did?

I absolutely love the charm of downtown Port Washington, when a storefront would go up for rent, I would think “someday” with a list of reasons why not now. Coming from a career of helping others, I knew that was at the heart of what my business would be centered around.  I wanted to help people with their healing journeys or use of natural products to be well, provide things that could be of help spiritually–healing crystals, oracle cards, books and items–sage, herbs, oil blends. With the expansion of the shop 3 years ago, I was able to offer a fun, nostalgic twist with collections that have always been near and dear to me. Vintage items and a nostalgic vibe with toys from the 80,s, 90’s and more that bring back so many fond memories and make one smile. I’ve always been an “eclectic” kind of person. With so many things I wanted to offer, it just made sense to call the shop Eclectic Avenue–our inventory is always changing and you never know what you will find when you visit!

What changes have you seen over the years open?

An increase in exploring spirituality, natural alternative therapies and prioritizing

self care along with upcycling, more people getting back into collecting vintage and items from their childhood. Making an effort to support local small businesses.

What do you most Love about your Industry?  I love helping others and being able to offer so many options for people’s individual paths of healing, self discovery and unlimited potential. The relationships that have been formed in doing so have been rewarding in knowing that I helped to make a difference in someone’s life whether it’s something spiritual or something nostalgic that brings back happy memories. What is your favorite time of the year at the shop?

Definitely Halloween and Christmas!  It’s so exciting to transform the shop for these magical holidays! During the Christmas holiday, you may even find the Grinch hanging around from time to time :)

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

It looks easy-I could do that! Unless you have owned your own brick and mortar business, nobody truly has an idea of just how much time, effort and hard work goes into creating the beautiful shop they see.

What message would you most like to share with people they may not know? I love what I do and put my heart into everything!  I am very grateful for all the relationships and friends I have made along the way with my loyal customers and community.  When visiting my shop, I want your experience to be unique, happy and know that I appreciate you all so much.

Events? Sales? Products or services you provide? We have many events throughout the year that are in conjunction with Mainstreet and also store merchant collective events. Examples would be Festival of the Arts in June, Fall Street Fest, Witches Night Out in October, Christmas on the Corner in December.  Throughout the year Eclectic Avenue offers Tarot readings on Saturdays and at times during the week, classes from jewelry making to learning how to create different things. We also do a Spirit fair a couple of times a year.  During the holidays we have fun activities that go along with the festivals the day of the event.

What would you like people to know about your business?

The shop specializes in many talented local artists, spiritual and metaphysical items along with crystals, fair trade, upcycled items, home decor, glassware, vintage, toys from the 80’s through the 2000’s and so much more. We are truly “Eclectic”! With our additional space that opened in Late 2021, we provide tarot readings Saturday afternoons,  workshops and events as well as a place to connect with others. We even do some paranormal “hunts” from time to time!  Specific lines you carry year round you love? We have so many unique items! From jewelry, crystals, metaphysical supplies to vintage, retro toys and everything in between.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

“This is my favorite place!” when walking through the door and the excitement of showing their friends and family around who are here for the first time. Customers who say “thank you for choosing our community to have your shop in” The visitors from out of town tell me how happy they are that I am still here with all the economic turmoil that’s going on and make sure they stop every time they are in town. The feeling of being calm and relaxed when they walk in.  The shop gives them good vibes and feels peaceful. I have an immense amount of gratitude and am very humbled by it all.

What are you most proud of?

The dedication I have to provide an exceptional customer experience and the hard work I’ve done and will continue to do to always improve on that. I am proud to be a part of the Port Washington community. I am very grateful and blessed to be a part of it all.

How many employees/Family work with you?

It’s mainly myself running the shop. My husband, mom and sister and 2 sons and friends help a lot behind the scenes. I couldn’t get everything done or be involved in the many great events we have here in Port Washington without their help.
