Handmade Goods & Vintage Finds

Atomic Antiques

Owners Bob and Jennifer Richardson talk about their Madison business.

How long have you been in business?

We opened Atomic Antiques Aug 1st, 2022. My wife, Jennifer, has over 16 years of experience being an antiques dealer and we were excited to turn that experience into a full time business.

How did you get started?

The owner of a long time running antique mall had approached us who was getting ready to retire. We liked the concept but wanted a different space where we could make it our own. We found this great location on Verona Road in Madison and purchased it in May of 2022. Our large 25,000 sq. ft building allows us to have over 100 dealers with well lit booths, large aisles, and easy access for all of our customers.

What changes have you seen over the years open?

We’ve seen a lot of growth in the popularity of mid-century modern design over the years, which we absolutely love. People really respond to the timeless, streamlined design elements combined with the familiarity of a vintage piece. Our love of that era of design is actually what gave our store its name—“Atomic Antiques.” The thing that’s great about the name, though, aside from the alliteration, is that it leaves room for everyone’s taste: Atomic Age midcentury design and the more traditional antiques that people have cherished for even longer. With over 25,000 square feet we have room for everyone’s taste here, from the 1800s through the 1970s.

What do you most Love about your Industry?

Getting to interact with the dealers and customers on a daily basis. Helping people find that specific item they want for their home or their collection.

Washington House Inn

Atomic Antiques

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

I’d say the most common myth is that everything in an antique store is dusty, old and moldy smelling. We strive to break that myth and make our Antique Mall the complete opposite. All of our dealers go the extra step to make our mall very inviting & exciting! We make antiquing fun and can guarantee you’ll call Atomic Antiques your new favorite destination! What message would you most like to share with people?

If you’ve never been to one, you should give an antique store a try! It’s much more than just all old items. You can find everything from one of a kind decor to gifts to clothing to furniture. What would you like people to know about your business?

We value our customers and try our best to make them feel comfortable in an inviting space. What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

I’d say the most common thing we hear is how they’ve never seen an antique store like ours. Antique malls come in all sizes, conditions, styles and layouts. What we think differentiates us is that we strive to have all of our dealers display items in a vignette so customers can really visualize what items might look like in their own home. Something else we love about our customers is how diverse in age they are. We get a lot of people telling us how much fun they had walking down memory road, seeing furniture, dish sets, or toys that they haven’t seen since they were kids, and we love satisfying that nostalgia for people. But we also have a lot of young customers who come in to have fun exploring the strange world of antiques they’ve never seen before, like a museum you can take things home from. We love that we provide a space that everyone can have a great time getting lost in.

What are you most proud of?

Our staff and dealers work so very hard to make this a fun and exciting place. Seriously, we wouldn’t exist without them.

How many employees/Family work with you?

We have 13 employees as well as my wife and I. Does your business have any special events coming up in the future?

We’ll have our big Anniversary Sale September 13th to 15th this year–you don’t want to miss it! In addition to storewide discounts, we’ll have free food and raffles to celebrate the beginning of our 3rd year in business and thank our customers for their support. Follow us on social media or join our email list to get notified of our upcoming sales!

Who/what can you credit your success?

My wife Jennifer and her parents Dave and Ann have been instrumental in making Atomic Antiques a success. ~

Inbetween summer adventures and hot afternoons spent poolside, you’re likely looking to combat rising temperatures with a cool, refreshing beverage. This year, quench your thirst with drinks that play up the trendiness of bold flavors.

While many concoctions can help you beat the heat, some gems seem to hit the spot better than others. Consider one of the trendiest beverages that is increasingly becoming available at smoothie and juice bars nationwide but which you can also prepare at home: the tempting, bold taste of the Mangonada. With a harmonious fusion of sweet, spicy and tangy flavors, this thirst-quencher captures the essence of tropical indulgence with the majestic mango at the center of its symphony of flavors.

“Mango not only adds a burst of flavor but also brings a unique depth to the beverage,” said Dan Spellman, director of marketing for the National Mango Board.

Central to the Mangonada is TajÌn Fruity Chamoy Sauce and Cl·sico Seasoning - a zesty blend of chili peppers, lime and sea salt - which are must-have ingredients to make the beverage. They combine to infuse the drink with a subtle kick, balancing the mango’s sweetness with a hint of spiciness that hits different.

This beloved beverage has captured the hearts and palates of people worldwide with its bold flavors and vibrant spirit to make summer deliciously unforgettable.
