Remember the episode from Friends where Ross buys a sofa and carries it upstairs to his apartment to avoid the delivery fee? It ends badly and hilariously with the white sofa a filthy wreck, sawn in two, and the word ‘pivot’ now embedded in the pop culture lexicon. Maybe he ought to have enlisted help from New York’s equivalent of Paula Condon, interior designer at EZ Living Interiors, Pouladuff, Cork, who is a trove of experience on determining your sofa-buying needs to reflect your personal taste and practical needs, with effortless home delivery.

“The sofa is probably going to be the most expensive piece in the room,” she says, “so speak to the salesperson. The sooner you tell us what you’re looking for, we can direct and help you eliminate too.” For customers down-sizing from, say, a house to an apartment, Paula cites the Anderson range for its modern looks, elevated on legs making a room look larger. For a young couple starting out, she suggests the Santorini or Preston. Both are high on comfort with clean lines, but sometimes it’s practical aspects that families prioritise for sticky-fingered kiddies and pets with muddy paws in need of wipeable microfibre or durable leather. Paula also encourages customers to walk around, and if a sofa catches their eye it can be delivered within the week, or there’s the EZ Living Interiors special order option to capture that longed-for jewel tone or warm neutral you didn’t see on the shop floor.

Working with customers to find a sofa suitable for the age and style of their home is also key for a look that will have longevity, according to Paula.

The Beaufort or Crawford sofas, echoing enduring design features, and the timeless Scott are three she sees working particularly well in this type of property. She also cites the importance of knowing your room measurements, especially for new builds. “There are no terms of reference in a new build,” she says. “If you’ve bought an older property, you’ll have seen furniture in it already and if it worked.” In addition to this expert, free advice in-store, Paula flags up online resources also. “We have room sets on the website to see the sofas in context, and a room visualiser where you upload an image of your room to see how a sofa will fit.” Home visits are available if an expert eye is needed to see how your new sofa will work in the space. Owner of Glenbrook House “He gave me a huge amount of advice on and off camera,” says Rob. “He’s extremely passionate about houses that are a bit older; the layout, paint, mixing new with the old. I was so chuffed at what I learned. Even though I had a very old house, I wasn’t living in a museum. I wanted it to be modern.” Opting for timeless, mid-century style, his furniture choices fit seamlessly into the space, but he offers a word of caution about shopping without a measuring tape. “I bought a sofa that didn’t fit,” he explains. “I took a massive hit on it on Done Deal. Lesson learned.” While he continues to work on the house, it was spotted by the EZ Living Interiors styling team on the lookout for interesting spaces for photoshoots. “We are always on Instagram or flicking through interiors publications looking for inspiring spaces to shoot in,” says stylist Sarah Commane. “We love to work with homeowners who have crafted unique spaces, like period features in Rob’s house. These features coupled with the homeowner’s passion for interiors always guide our choices.

Fans of RTE’s The Great House Revival will remember season three and Hugh Wallace’s visit to Co. Cork where he met new home owner Rob Hennessy and surveyed his clapped-out period property which he was renovating, armed with a tight budget, a dream and an appetite for hard work. As we rooted for Rob from the comfort of our armchairs, he rose to the relentless challenges this decaying Victorian beauty threw at him from a Glenbrook hillside where it has stood for 167 years. But it paid off as he enjoys what is now his stylish home with partner Katie and toddler daughter Caoimhe, and more recently indulged in the fun of furnishing and styling it, which he documents on his Victorian Renovation – Glenbook, Instagram account. But always open to advice and the expertise of others, Rob places special value on professional eyes, including Hugh Wallace’s. Taking on-board his advice about paint, Rob has opted for heritage colours, favouring Farrow & Ball, although he admits to clever and economical colour duping.

Stylist, EZ Living Interiors “When setting up for a shoot, we look at what will pop,” Sarah explains. “We were inspired by what Rob had done but with our own twist. We wanted to pick up on the exposed stone and nature, and the beautiful view to Cork Harbour.” The versatile Calia dining table which can seat six to eight diners, but reduces to a simple round table for four is grounded by a generously proportioned rug with teal detail linking to Rob’s green kitchen cabinetry. Choosing pieces to fit coherently with existing elements also saw the stylists turn a bay window into a cosy corner, perfect for relaxation. Here Sarah opted for the Blanca chair and a sculptural floor lamp to make a reading nook, optimising the panoramic view of Cork Harbour. “By using the unique existing features of the home, you can craft a personal interior style that blends the old and new,” she says. “Take time to choose pieces to suit. What do you gravitate towards? Look in your wardrobe for colour and texture. It’s a great tip.”
