mission

mpac improves public understanding and policies that impact american muslims by engaging our government, media and communities. vision

america is enriched by the vital contributions of american muslims.

Dear Friends, Honored Guests, and Beloved Community, As-salaamu alaykum — peace be upon you. Thank you for joining us for our 17th annual Convention and Banquet, and for your commitment to MPAC through this incredibly challenging, unprecedented time in our nation’s history. We gather together dealing with a growing political culture that has continuously attempted to marginalize, stigmatize, and even deport American Muslims. But seeing the other side of that political divide is a silver lining— people from all different walks of life rising up together, locally and across the nation to protect our rights and the rights of all vulnerable communities. Organizations that had never worked together in the past are collaborating on efforts toward protecting the rights of immigrants. These groups cover the spectrum of a rainbow.

letter from the president

We at MPAC were able to unanimously pass a resolution in the U.S. Senate holding perpetrators of hate crimes accountable for their actions. And unified efforts have effectively shut down the Executive Order for a Muslim Ban three times. Make no mistake, we still have a lot of work ahead of us to repair the political, ideological and racial divides that cause so much damage to our relationships, neighborhoods, and to our democracy. While it is much easier to walk away, shut it off, or even yell back when we’re angry, we must choose engagement over avoidance, dialogue over dissent, and kindness over antagonism to bridge our divides. Listening to each other is the first step, and today brings many opportunities to hear new perspectives that will inspire and encourage your involvement. This crisis America finds itself in is an enormous opportunity to learn from each other, to address our own fears and concerns, and to get to know each other as brothers and sisters. The Qur’an tells us: “And hold firmly to the rope of God all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of God upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brethren.” — Surah 3:103 Thank you for meeting us “on the bridge” today for our 17th annual Convention. We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support, partnership, and engagement in strengthening our communities and improving our democracy. Together, we will overcome. Sincerely,

Salam Al-Marayati President

security and civil rights PANEL ONE

America has always struggled in prioritizing the security of the nation over the civil rights of its citizens.

Are the two mutually exclusive and does compromising one damage the effectiveness of the other?

Seema Ahmad mpac board chair

A trial attorney with the Office of the Federal Public Defender in Los Angeles, Ms. Ahmad represents indigent defendants facing federal criminal charges. Previously a staff attorney at Advancement Project in Washington D.C., she worked to combat harsh school discipline practices and policies that contribute to the school-to-prison pipeline. Ms. A hmad received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and law degree from Georgetown Law, where she was a Public Interest Law Scholar and was awarded a postgraduate human rights fellowship by Georgetown’s Human Rights Institute. Prior to law school, Ms. Ahmad worked at the Center for Constitutional Rights as a paralegal focused on post-9/11 civil liberties issues including detention policy in Guantanamo, surveillance, and racial profiling. Ms. Ahmad is the Chair of MPAC’s Board of Directors.

Sammy Rangel is a Native American-Latino author, social worker, peace activist, father, second-degree black belt, speaker, and trainer with a gripping story. His autobiography, Fourbears: The Myths of Forgiveness, takes the reader from his tortured childhood to his “remorseless beast” years through to his healing and transformation, offering key insights into how victims become perpetrators of hate and violence. Along with other past members of the American far-right extremist movement, Sammy co-founded Life After Hate, which draws on their unique understanding and experiences of transformation to help others leave a life of hate and violence, using the tools of empathy and compassion instead of judgment.

Civil rights activist and attorney Connie Rice has served as a trusted advisor to MPAC on countless public policy and national security matters. Along with a team of veteran civil rights lawyers, she cofounded the Advancement Project, a multi-racial civil rights organization focused on racial justice in the legislative process.

Ms. Rice and MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati, alongside 44 other leaders, co-chaired a state commission which ensured that crimes motivated by bigotry were not overlooked by officials and communities, and she participated in the Interfaith Peacemaking Project with MPAC co-founder, the late Dr. Maher Hathout. A graduate of Harvard University and the NYU School of Law, Ms. Rice served as a part of the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund and has received over 50 major awards for her work on addressing

rethinking religious freedom PANEL TWO

The fear of religious minorities at home and abroad has resulted in the use of religion as a tool for discrimination. Recently, the DOJ issued guidance that permits discrimination on the basis of religious beliefs.

Was the Bill of Rights written to protect religious minorities or to project the beliefs of the religious majority onto the population?

Omar Noureldin mpac vice president

Omar Noureldin is an expert in national security law, first amendment law, and civil rights law, and is a Lecturer at USC, his alma mater. He has appeared on national news networks including CNN and FOX, where he has commented on legal and Supreme Court issues such the Travel Ban’s impact on American national security. As an attorney, Omar previously represented pro bono undocumented m inors, HI V/A IDS discrimination victims, and foster children in both legal and administrative proceedings. Active with MPAC for over 10 years, he has served as a member of the national Board of Directors, as Board Vice Chair and Chair of the Board’s Development and Governance committees. Nathan Walker

Constitutional and Islamic Law exper t Asifa Quraishi-Landes has advised MPAC on a range of issues pertaining to U.S. rule of law and civil rights. Currently a law professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, her work dispels the misconceptions that Islamic law and American Constitutional Theory, or feminist ideals, are mutually exclusive. She is currently President of the National Association of Muslim Lawyers (NAML), and serves on the governing board of the Association of American Law Schools’ Section on Islamic Law. She has been an outspoken advocate on issues of civil rights, freedom of religion and what is afforded to religious minorities.

A steadfast advocate of religious pluralism, Nate Walker served as a strategic planner and Executive Director of the Religious Freedom Center of the Newseum Institute in Washing ton, DC. At the Newseum, he organized dozens of coalition groups, hosted our annual Civic Summit delegates, and helped MPAC to become a convener of dialogue around religious freedom issues, including a recent panel discussion on blasphemy.

Professor Quraishi-Landes holds degrees from Columbia Law School, the University of California - Davis, the University of California - Berkeley, and a doctorate from Harvard Law School. She is a 2009 Carnegie Scholar and 2012 Guggenheim Fellow, has served as a Public Delegate on the United States Delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the Task Force on Religion and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and as advisor to the Pew Task Force on Religion and Public Life.

His most recent book, Cultivating Empathy: The Worth and Dignity of Ever y Person - Without Exception explores ways we can understand all perspectives of a conflict, with the awareness that understanding each other does not necessarily imply agreement. Mr. Walker has a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary and Masters degrees in Education and Administration from Teachers College Columbia University. What does it really mean to be a patriotic American? We’ll explore the rich and complex range of characteristics that answer this question.

Salam Al-Marayati mpac president

President and co-founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, Salam Al-Marayati oversees mpac’s groundbreaking civic engagement, public policy, and advocacy work. community changers awards Each year, we honor people who inspire the American Muslim community with their leadership, dedicated service, and trailblazing work toward our inclusion in the fabric of this country. In this challenging journey, it is important to recognize the steadfast partners and allies walking beside us and to shine a spotlight on the inspiring progress happening in our communities. Tonight, we honor three unsung heroes, all pioneers and civil servants who are ensuring that the voices of American Muslims, and those of other underrepresented communities, are heard and amplified. These honorees exemplify the best in all of us as they build bridges and break barriers in their daily lives and work.

Dr. Heather Laird Dr. Heather Laird is the Director of the Center for Muslim Mental Health and Islamic Psycholog y at USC, Managing Director of HRL Consulting, LLC., and the host of Muslims and Mental Health on YouTube. Dr. Laird works to reduce stigmas around mental illness in underserved communities, especially among American Muslims. She recently completed a doctorate of Psychology specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy at USC, where she was chosen as the commencement speaker for her class. As part of the Safe Spaces program of MPAC and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office, Dr. Laird provides counseling services at the Islamic Center of Southern California. With the overall goal of wellness, and a public health approach, her counseling services strengthen vulnerable individuals, including many underserved minorities such as Arabs, Latinos, African-Americans, Asians, South Asians and LGBTQ clients. Dr. Laird holds Masters degrees in Clinical Psychology and Public Administration, and has been awarded the Global Psychology Award and the Community Partnerships Award for her work with the LA and Orange County Departments of Mental Health.

Steve and Judy Gilliland Steve and Judy Gilliland personify what effective interfaith allies look like, in speech and in action. Lifelong members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Steve and Judy consistently show up in solidarity with the American Muslim community at events, rallies, demonstrations, press conferences and community forums. In 2010, they hosted a delegation of Muslim leaders to Salt Lake City to meet with Mormon leaders and learn more about each others histories and traditions. Steve and Judy have built an incredible bridge between the LDS and American Muslim communities through their years of advocacy and engagement. Steve Gilliland is Director of Muslim Relations and Judy is Director of Interfaith Relations for the Southern California Public Affairs Council of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Steve and Judy have fully participated in the Ramadan fast for over seven years, attend Friday prayers to build relationships at different mosques in the area, and visit numerous Islamic Centers each year on Open Mosque Day. The Gillilands and six of their eight children spent eight months in Jerusalem in 1990, where Steve taught Old and New Testament at the BYU Center on Mount Scopus. While there, seeing “the

degree of mistreatment that the Palestinians suffer as a people” had a tremendous effect on them and their advocacy moving forward. Judy Gilliland is active in a variety of organizations, serving on the Women’s Interfaith Committee and the board of directors of the South Coast Interfaith Council. She is the past president of the Interreligious Council of Southern California and a mentor to the Interfaith Youth Leadership Initiative in Long Beach. Upon completing his Ed.D. in counseling from Boston University, Steve established the LDS Institute of Religion in Cambridge, Massachusetts and serves on the board of the Christian-Muslim Consultative Group in Los Angeles.

rev. dr.

william j. barber ii pastor of greenleaf christian church, co-chair of the poor people’s campaign, and architect of the moral mondays movement

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

“ William Barber is the closest person we have to Martin Luther King Jr. in our midst.” — cornel west

Rev. Barber is the Pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina, a city still divided by the scars of Jim Crow. He also serves as co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and as President and Senior Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, a nonpartisan organization that seeks to counter the narrow framework of neo-conservatism with a moral, progressive agenda based on equality for all. Rev. Barber is the architect of the Forward Together moral movement that gained national acclaim with its Moral Monday protests at the North Carolina General Assembly in 2013. These weekly actions drew tens of thousands of moral witnesses to the state legislature, and over 1,050 peaceful protesters were arrested, handcuffed and jailed. He is a past president of the North Carolina NAACP, which made immense progress under his leadership toward combatting racial injustice in relation to incarceration, voting rights, and marriage equality. Rev. Barber currently sits on the NAACP’s national board. Speaking at the 2016 Democratic National Convention (DNC), Rev. Barber electrified the crowd saying, “Jesus, a brown-skinned Palestinian Jew, called us to preach good news to the poor, the broken and the bruised and

all those who are made to feel unaccepted.” His admirers say that his sermons and speeches, which intertwine the interfaith religious tenets of love, justice and mercy with a Constitutional morality, steal the moral high ground long claimed by political conservatives. A former Mel King Fellow at MIT, he is currently Visiting Professor of Public Theology and Activism at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York and is a Senior Fellow at Auburn Seminary. Dr. Barber is regularly featured in media outlets such as MSNBC, CNN, The New York Times, Washington Post and The Nation Magazine. He is the 2015 recipient of the Puffin Award and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Award. His two most recent books include Forward Together and The Third Reconstruction. At age 15, William Barber was elected president of the NA ACP’s youth council, at 17 president of his high school’s student body, and at 19, student government president at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he received his bachelor’s degree in political science. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University and a doctorate from Drew University with a concentration in public policy and pastoral care.
