DESIGN OVERVIEW

CONCEPT STATEMENT THE PROBLEM: (a.) The School of Architecture and Interior Design currently lacks the means to display the vast output of student projects each term. (b.) The current space provided is dull and lacks the energy and diversity that is representative of the school. (c.) The co-op program divides the school into independent sections that rarely see each others work. Final reviews and pinned up work is taken down and dismantled before opposite students have a chance to view the projects.

THE SOLUTION: (a.) Provide a new foundation of space that divides the 7000 hallway by class. Allocate space to each year and major. (b.) Visually create a dynamic space that is adaptable to different projects. Allow for flexibly in presentation methods. (c.) Create a new initiative prompting each studio to display selected projects for a minimum time period of one semester.

COMPONENT UNITS

MATERIAL

a. b.

Surface Material The exterior surface is comprised of two materials, (a.) a base of 1/2 MDF board for stability layered with a (b.) cork board veneer to allow presentation material to be attached.

Bracket A folding L-bracket is used to attach the component to the wall. These L-brackets are already used on the folding shelves outside of the 7245 studios.

Hinge A simple 3-1/2 Crown Bolt hinge is used to attach the extension panel to the hinge panel. This hinge is limited to swing 180 degrees.

COMPONENT UNITS SETTINGS

1. Shelf setting. Used to display models and other three dimensional objects. Shelf height is set at three feet off of the finish floor.

2. Fold 1. Partial bend in the component allows for presentation material to pined to the top surface.

3. Fold 2. At 75% of the full extension material can be either pinned to the bottom or top surface. In other transitional areas this component is used as a filler item to divide space.

4. Pin up space. Full extension of the component unit allows for a 4’ tall, flat pin up space. Also used in programed areas such as school news and info as well as lecture series display.
