odemos afirmar com muito orgulho que o nosso vôlei vive hoje sua fase mais pujante, com inúmeros dados que mostram nossas glórias esportivas - do infanto-juvenil às seleções principais. Nenhum outro país tem mais de 150 jogadores ou jogadoras que foram campeões mundiais jogando em sua própria pátria. O Brasil tem este privilégio. Se antes a Itália era a meca do voleibol, esta condição agora é nossa. Os títulos nas quadras estão bem retratados neste livro, mas gostaria de abordar algo que passa à margem do grande público: o incansável trabalho da CBV, referência mundial em gestão esportiva. Dividimos nosso escopo de trabalho em unidades de negócios, realizando a parte técnica e logística das competições em todo o território nacional. O vôlei é movimentado no Brasil em 100% das regiões, do norte ao sul, e cada Estado recebe, pelo menos uma vez por ano, uma competição oficial organizada pela confederação. A CBV vai além. Our best phase

e can say with great pride that Brazilian volleyball today is experiencing its strongest phase ever, with a host of data showing our sporting glories - from the juvenile squads to the national teams. No other country has more than 150 players, both male and female, who have been world champions playing in their home country. Brazil has this privilege. If Italy was previously the Mecca of volleyball, this honor is now ours.

The titles won on the courts are thoroughly portrayed in this book, but I’d like to address something that is not widely known among the general public: the tireless work of the CBV, a global benchmark in sports management. We divide our scope of work into business units, carrying out the technical and logistical portion of the competitions throughout Brazil. Volleyball is a major attraction in 100% of the regions in Brazil, from north to south; every state hosts an official competition organized by the confederation at least once a year. The CBV goes further. Knowing the importance of sports as a tool for socialization, for 11 years we’ve been putting into practice the VivaVôlei program, which again has nationwide coverage, and is responsible for the initiation into sports of over 200,000 children. Those who are familiar with our work know that we will not rest on the laurels of our conquests. Our Volleyball Development Center - Saquarema (CDV-S) is already working hard for upcoming competitions, especially the all-important 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Finally, my congratulations to this long-time partner of ours -Olympikus. O relógio marcava 12 horas no Rio de Janeiro em 7 de janeiro de 1997. Poucos imaginavam, mas aquela terça-feira mudaria o rumo do voleibol brasileiro.

Outra competição da temporada foi o classificatório para o Mundial, no Rio, um torneio quase pro forma, conquistado em 36 minutos sobre o Peru: 15/1, 15/3 e 15/5.

And on the men’s team, more changes. Rio native Radamés Lattari Filho, 39, would replace José Roberto Guimarães, out since the Atlanta Olympics a year earlier. It was up to Radamés to renew the group that finished fifth in 1997 World League, the same position and the previous World League and Olympics. The basic team consisted of Ricardinho, Carlão, Nalbert, Kid, Paulão, and Max. Marcelo Negrão resigned, and three players alternated in the newly created position of libero: Nalbert, Giba and Kid. Another competition of the season was the qualifying rounds for the World Championship in Rio, a quasi pro-forma tournament, beating Peru in just 36 minutes: 15/1, 15/3 and 15/5.

O melhor viria no final da temporada - o título da Copa dos Campeões, no ginásio Yoyogi National. Em só uma hora, o time de Radamés fez 15/5, 15/11 e 19/17 no Japão e conquistou seu primeiro troféu em nível mundial desde a Liga Mundial de 1993. O que é melhor: com uma equipe jovem, com a menor média de idade entre as oito participantes: 22 anos e 3 meses.

The Women’s National Team had a tough 1997, and didn’t vie for the Grand Prix because of disagreements with the FIVB. At the 22nd South American Championship, they captured the title, beating Peru, 15/3, 15/13 and 15/13. At the Grand Champions Cup in Japan, the team led by head coach Bernardinho won bronze, behind Russia and Cuba. For most of the match the team consisted of Ana Moser, Virna, Ida, Fernanda, Hilma, and Karin Negrão.

Com a base composta por Maurício, Giba, Roim, Douglas, Nalbert e Gustavo, com Kid como líbero, o time não avançou às finais da Liga Mundial. No Mundial do Japão, ficou em quarto, perdendo o bronze para Cuba por 3 sets a 1 (15/12, 6/15, 11/15 e 12/ 15). A campanha foi melhor que o quinto lugar do Mundial anterior, na Grécia, em 1994. Desempenho positivo foi visto também na Copa América: campeão invicto, superando a Argentina por 3 sets a 2.

Preparing the way back to the podium, the men’s team showed progress in 1998. With the starting lineup consisting of Maurício, Giba, Roim, Douglas, Nalbert and Gustavo, with Kid as libero, the team did not make it to the World League finals. At the World Championship in Japan, it finished fourth, losing the bronze to Cuba by three sets to one (15/12, 6/15, 11/15 and 12/15). However, the campaign was better than the fifth place finish at the previous World Championship in Greece, in 1994. A positive performance was also seen at Copa America: The Men’s Team went undefeated, beating Argentina in the finals by 3 sets to 2.

Temporada melhor teve a seleção feminina, que sofreu... com o uniforme. Por exigência da Federação Internacional, a peça única tinha formato de macaquinho, causando discórdia nas jogadoras e no técnico. Ousado demais, a roupa inibia movimentos e ficava transparente ao absorver suor.

The women’s team had a better season, but it suffered... with the uniform. As required by the International Federation, the one-piece uniform was like a pair of shortalls, causing discord with the players and coach. The outfit was too daring, inhibited movement, and became nearly transparent when it got wet from perspiration.

O Brasil no vôlei desde 1997 / Brazil in volleyball since 1997 Querelas à parte, o desempenho em quadra correspondeu à tradição da equipe. Jogando de azul, a Seleção arrasou a Rússia (15/11, 15/13 e 15/9) e conquistou seu terceiro Grand Prix, somando 1998 às conquistas de 1994 e 1996.

All squabbling aside, the performance on the court matched the team’s tradition. Donning their blue uniforms, the National Team eased passed Russia (15/11, 15/13 and 15/9) and won its third Grand Prix, adding 1998 to the achievements of 1994 and 1996.

No Mundial, aquele que foi um dos melhores elencos verde-amarelos (Ana Moser, Fernanda Venturini, Érika, Ana Flávia, Ana Paula, Virna, Leila, Fofão...) ficou, assim como os homens, com a quarta posição, caindo ante Cuba na semifinal e perdendo o bronze para a Rússia.

At the World Championship, the squad that featured one of the best green & yellow rosters ever (Ana Moser, Fernanda Venturini, Érika, Ana Flávia, Ana Paula, Virna Leila, Fofão. . . ) finished fourth, (as did the Men’s Team), losing to Cuba in the semifinals and losing the bronze to Russia. Na Copa América, o time de Radamés levou o bi, batendo os EUA em Orlando, na Flórida, por 3 sets a 1 (24/26, 25/20, 25/23 e 25/13), perdendo um só set em toda a competição. O time já era um pouco diferente do começo do ano: Carlão, Giba, Ricardinho, Max, Douglas e Gustavo, com Celsinho de líbero. Sorte melhor faltou na Copa do Mundo, com um quinto lugar que fez a Seleção jogar o pré-olimpíco do ano seguinte. O feminino, ainda regido por Bernardinho, abriu 1999 com o time-base Virna, Érika, Elisângela, Karin, Janina e Fofão, com Ana Flávia de líbero. Ana Moser e Leila eram reservas. Em decisão épica, levou o ouro no Pan-Americano de Winnipeg – sobre Cuba, 3 sets a 2, 20/25, 25/22, 25/27, 25/22 e 15/13. No Grand Prix, prata, sucumbindo à altura e força das russas Chachkova, Godina e Artamonova. Comandadas por Nikolai Karpol, as gigantes do leste europeu cravaram 3 sets a 0 (25/23, 25/22 e 25/20) e acabaram com a mais longa invencibilidade da era Bernardinho até então: 14 partidas.

Ana Moser and Leila were subs. In an epic match, the Women’s Team took the gold at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, beating Cuba 3 sets to 2: 20/25, 25/22, 25/27, 25/22 and 15/13. At the Grand Prix, the Team took silver, succumbing to the height and strength of Russians Chachkova, Godina, and Artamonova. Boto duas limusines à sua disposição”, disse a Joel, em tom de brincadeira, Ary Graça, o presidente da CBV.

The year 2000 got off to a noisy start, and not just from the fireworks in celebration of the new millennium. O elenco no Grand Prix da Ásia contou com as levantadoras Fofão e Kátia, as atacantes Virna, Leila, Érika, Elisângela e Raquel; as meios-de-rede Kely, Karin Rodrigues, Walewska e Janina, e a líbero Ricarda. O resultado foi o bronze, vencendo a China, por 3 sets a 1 (12/25, 25/13, 25/19 e 25/ 18). Na semifinal da Olimpíada, um tira-teima contra Cuba, algoz de 1996. Sem brigas pelo contrário -, mas deu Cuba, 3 sets a 2.

The roster for the Grand Prix of Asia featured setters Fofão and Katia, and attackers Virna, Leila, Erika, Elisângela and Rachel; middle blockers Kely, Karin Rodrigues, Walewska and Janina, and Ricarda as libero. The Women’s World Championship, in Germany, had a less savory outcome for Brazil: without five of its main starters - Virna, Érika, Walewska, Fofão and Rachel, who had resigned - the team lead by of Marco Aurélio Motta placed seventh in the competition. The team: Marcelle, Sassá, Karin, Valeskinha, Paula Pequeno, Luciana, Fabi, Soninha, Sheila, Arlene and Marina Daloca. O time de Bernardinho começou de maneira habitual: ganhando a Liga Mundial sobre a Itália por 3 a 1, na casa dos adversários. Foi o 11º título em 14 torneios na era Bernardinho, que escalou como titulares Ricardinho, André Nascimento, André Heller, Gustavo, Giba, Dante e Escadinha na decisão em Roma.

The expectation for 2004 was a thrilling season, with the Athens Olympics. Bernardinho’s team began the usual way: winning the World League, defeating Italy by 3-1 on the opponent’s home court. The men were after their second consecutive gold-medal finish; the women had their sights on the gold that had escaped them at the previous Olympics. Bernardinho’s team placed fourth in the World League and was Olympic silver medalist, against the USA. Era para ser imprevisível e emocionante, mas virou um passeio. A chave feminina da Olimpíada de 2008 prometia equilíbrio e paridade com pelo menos seis seleções na briga pela medalha de ouro: Brasil, China, Cuba, Rússia, Itália e Estados Unidos.

A Seleção de 2008 entrou para a história como uma das mais completas campeãs olímpicas de vôlei de todos os tempos. O semblante de Paula prova. Aquele time não cruzou o mundo para brincadeira.

Fabiana, Jaqueline, Paula. Merciless serves, powerful attacks, and especially, extreme prowess. Fofão brilhou em Pequim com seu habitual número sete às costas – mas poderia ser o 17, dos 17 anos de excelentes serviços prestados à Seleção. Foi convocada pela primeira vez em 1991, quando Sheilla, Paula e Mari não tinham sequer dez anos. A coroação não tirou sua habitual humildade: “Tive muitos espelhos. Hoje sou uma atleta muito mais madura”.

Fofão shone at Beijing with her usual jersey number seven - but it could have been 17, for the 17 years of excellent service she’s given to the squad. She was first called up for the first time in 1991, when Sheilla, Paula and Mari weren’t even ten years old. The coronation didn’t take away her usual humility: “I had a lot of role models. A catarse serviu para mostrar, também, a verdadeira adoração do grupo por José Roberto Guimarães. Nas alturas, ele começava a sentir o sabor de ser a primeira pessoa, viva ou morta, a ser campeã olímpica por seleções masculinas e femininas de vôlei.

Um dos que mais ressaltaram esta condição foi o ponteiro Murilo, no ápice de sua forma e do seu jogo. “É todo mundo contra a gente. Enquanto estamos tensos, os adversários do outro lado da rede estão rindo, se divertindo. Eles mesmos dizem que não têm nada a perder contra a gente.”

TVs bateram recorde de audiência (a RAI 3 registrou 3,5 milhões de telespectadores, com share de 14,77% de aparelhos ligados), e ginásios receberam suas maiores lotações (o PalaLottomatica, em Roma, teve 12.178 pagantes). Os italianos provocaram antes e durante. Depois do jogo, se calaram. A atuação contundente do Brasil encerrou qualquer discussão sobre quem merecia a vaga na final. Foram 19 pontos a mais em toda a partida, incluindo um marcante cartão de visitas de 25/15 no primeiro set. Cuba sentiu a pressão, as pancadas e o volume do impecável jogo brasileiro. A superioridade foi tamanha que lembrou até mesmo a final contra a Polônia em Tóquio-2006. Duas finais seguidas de Mundial sem sequer perder sets, cedendo só 51 pontos à Polônia e 58 à Cuba. Tal superioridade encontra paralelos apenas nos livros de história.

The final match was against Cuba, featuring teen star Wilfredo León; but decisions are usually played and won by adults, not teenagers. Cuba felt the pressure, the spikes, and the volume of the flawless Brazilian game. Brazil’s superiority even recalled the final match against Poland in Tokyo-2006. Two World Championship finals in a row, without losing a single set, yielding 51 points to Poland and 58 to Cuba. Such superiority is matched only in history books.

O já tradicional peixinho teve companhia ilustre pelo segundo Mundial seguido. Se em 2006 Giba foi eleito o melhor da competição, em 2010 a honra coube ao seu substituto, Murilo, que atuou em boa parte da final com uma entorse no tornozelo.

The traditional “little fish” had illustrious company for the second World Championship in a row. If Giba was voted the competition’s most valuable player in 2006, in 2010 the honor went to his substitute, Murilo, who played the better part of the final match with a sprained ankle.
