Óðinn is one of the patterns on the instructional DVD Knit your own Lopapeysa. The DVD is published by Knitting Iceland and available in our web store. Óðinn is a strong and warm Lopapeysa knit with the bulky but surprisingly light Álafoss lopi. The pattern is classic and so are the colors. Although, if you feel like changing the colors to shocking pink and turquoise, just do it! The construction and methods used to knit Óðinn are traditional for Icelandic Lopapeysa knitting. This makes a good project for those wanting to get familiar with Lopapeysa knitting. The only non-traditional aspect of the design is the tubular cast off at the neckline. That method, along with the rest, is covered on the DVD. Put underarm stitches on pieces of scrap yarn or stitch holders and combine the three pieces one a large circular needle. The yoke is worked in one piece, using simple decreases for shaping. To finish, cast off with the tubular method at the neckline, graft the underarm stitches together using the Kitchener stitch and weave in ends. Invisible ribbing increases (worked into purled stitches): bring the “scarf” around the neck of the purled stitch up on the needle, purl the strand, purl the stitch. Symmetrical sleeve increases: Knit to the last stitch of the round. M1R: bring the left needle under the strand between the needles, from behind, knit into the front of the strand. Knit the last and first stitch of the round. M1L: bring the left needle under the strand between the needles, from the front, knit into the back of the strand. Tubular cast off: 1. round: knit the knit stitches, slip the purled stitches with yarn in front. 2. round: purl the purled stitches, slip the knit stitches with yarn in back. 3. round: same as round 1. 4. round: same as round 2. 5. Move the stitches to a couple of helper needles (double pointed). Knit stitches onto one needle and purled onto the other. 6. Graft the knit and purled stitches together using the Kitchener stitch.
