Nick Ruffalo

Nick Ruffalo is a senior undergraduate at the University of Minnesota in the Apparel Design program. His work has been seen in several runway shows such as Distortion, The Affair, Hearts for Fashion, and (In)sight, as well as appearing in the 2009 Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts exhibit for surface design. Nick’s inspiration is drawn from nature and various cultural influences, including his internship in Africa where he was designing batik textiles for Global Mamas. His unique surface designs and textures make all of his pieces true works of art.

Kayla Styczinski

Kayla Styczinski is a freshman in the apparel design program at the University of Minnesota.Kayla grew up on a hobby farm in the small town of Colfax, WI. Since childhood, Kayla has immersed herself in any creative and artistic activity available to her including: sewing, knitting, crocheting, piano lessons, dance, and much more. It is through these activities that Kayla began to realize her passion for fashion. She began to sketch and found that she is inspired by everyday objects, old movies, family, flowers, and simplicity. Kayla hopes to graduate as an apparel design major and to continue doing what she loves.

Laura Henslin

Fashion is about the juxtaposition of ideas: how we live, how we feel, and what is happening. I’m inspired to create trendy garments that people would both empathize with while also being fun to wear. I tend to focus on delicate textures, structured lines, while incorporating a variety of fabrics and color palettes. My goals in the near future include traveling. I’m set on moving to Europe for an internship and moving back to the states to find a job in NYC. The MN fashion scene continues to improve and I would love to still be a part of it while I’m away.

Jennifer Voth

Two Septembers ago Jen moved from Oregon to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota for clothing design. Aside from her full time schooling she designs and constructs leather jewelry for the local company Artist Built. Her garments for the Scrubbed into Fashion Show contain fitted bodices with full bubble skirts cinching in the natural waist. Her source of inspiration stems from anatomy of the human heart and anatomical models of the heart. Her couture design and ready to wear design reflect each other in their color scheme, silhouette, visual depth and contrast. Medical scrubs are apparent in her designs in her clever use of scrub pockets and pieced together segments of scrub fabric. Some of Jens jewelry designs can be seen in photos from the Voltage fashion show 2011 (occurred on April 15th) paired with clothing designer Sarah M. Holm.

Jen Krava

I am currently pursuing a masters degree in Landscape Architecture with a minor in Public Art, but have been sewing all of my life. I am founder of Article and Indie Undies, creating custom clothing and women’s panties. The design process and evolution of a creation fascinates me. Today’s designs are inspired by nurse hats of the 1900’s, the Caduceus, and the 2011 women’s fall color palette. My goal is to use shape and a splash of color to bring life to former scrubs.

Lucie Biros

I’m Lucie Biros. Creativity is my passion, and particularly clothing design. I am a sophomore in the Apparel Design program, and am having the time of my life. My designs in general are not as minimalistic as my pieces for this show: ordinarily I tend towards a rougher aesthetic. They were inspired by the intense absolutes of the medical profession, and within that field, the need for practical simplicity.

Host CHRISTOPHER ofSTRAUB Project Runway Q. We loved you on Project Runway! Did you watch any fashion-based reality TV before appearing on the show? What about after? I am a HUGE fan of Project Runway! That’s why it’s such an honor to have been a part of it. I have missed a few episodes of season 8 but other than that I make a point of watching. Q. How did you get your start in fashion? What were you doing before the show? I made a living as an interior designer before the show. I preferred to work with fabrics and started doing a lot of fiber art and, naturally, it lead to fashion design. Q. What sets scrubbed into fashion apart from other shows you’ve been involved with? Scrubbed into Fashion is going to be a great show with a great cause. All of the competing designers have different points of view and that will make for a fantastic presentation. Q. Do you have any advice for aspiring designers, models, or fashion lovers in general? Fashion is an art form. Appreciate what it has to offer. Q. Has being from Minnesota influenced your experience in the fashion industry at all? I am inspired by nature and Minnesota is a great place to get inspired. Q. What has been your biggest challenge thus far? Greatest accomplishment? The biggest challenge is that it has been tough to get the attention from the New York fashion community. Still working on it. I have, recently, gotten attention from the retail store, Maurices, and will be designing pieces for their locations. Q. Describe your upcoming collection in three words Strong, Bold, Contemporary

Model Trainer JAKE THOMPSON

of Fashionasty.com

Q: The Name: What’s the story behind “Fashion Nasty” ?! How did you come up with it and what does it mean? “You can’t be fashion without being nasty.” While living in NYC, I’d hijack fashion parties and feel intoxicated by the arrogant stench permeating from fashion bitches. I didn’t want to fit into that world, so I created my own. The concept of “Fashionasty” hatched when I’d been photographed for street blogs, and bloggers would write mean comments. I thought, well I must be doing something right if people are talking about it. So I embraced all the things people normally reject, and that’s where the phoenix rose from the ashes, and I birthed my blog baby. ...people just need to stop ignoring the magical powers they possess, stop apologizing, and start strutting their stilettos to the beat of their own runway. I’m encouraging you to harness your inner “fashionasty.” This lifestyle is already alive in our hearts, people just need to stop ignoring the magical powers they possess, stop apologizing, and start strutting their stilettos to the beat of their own runway. It’s not about the clothes, it’s about self-love and living your life, for you.

Q: You’ve got Fashionasty, Street Meat, and FashionastyTV... What are each of your creative outlets about? How do they differ in terms of content or use? Fashionasty: If you’ve gotta hunger pain for a quick fashion fix, Fashionasty will fill you up, and never let you down. It’s your daily digital dear dia(rrhea)y digest. I’m commentating on - along with asking you to question with me - popular fashion trends that are being fed to us. My references come from Queer & 90s culture, because those two worlds influenced - and continue to influence - EVERYTHING, whether people like to admit it or not. I emphasize body positivity, community, and above all, humility. Trust me, as flattered as I am for Vita.mn dubbing me a Minneapolis “fashion maven,” no one is laughing harder than me, because I know I look like a clown sometimes. And on a totally singular level, if you’re just looking for some style sinspiration, or just a good laugh, you’ll want to bookmark it! StreetMeat: Keeping in line with Fashionasty’s mission of inclusivity, you might not got splashed across page six, but that doesn’t mean you’re any less of a badass. No matter what age, shape, or size, I’ll put you on my blog. It’s about making everyone feel special. FashionastyTV is the poorman’s version of Blue Fly closet confessions. My goal is to make mini-webisodes and expose your immaculate closet collection. Q: What advice do you have to offer to young fashionistas wanting to break into “the industry”? Don’t be intimated by fashion teams. They are nice, hard working, regular people. My papa always told me, “The day you think your shit doesn’t stink, I’ve failed as a parent.” So, I remind myself that

there is never a job too little or too big. You don’t always get to do the cool things at first, so that’s where your personal style and flair can shine. So smile, stick out, and be willing to work your butt off. The end result is worth it, I promise. Q: What was it like working on “Ugly Betty”?! Any especially ridiculous moments? Particular pieces from wardrobe that you wanted to steal? Pure MAGIC. On my first day, someone asked me how to use those fancy Keurig coffeemaker machines, and I turned around and it was Lindsay f**king Lohan. Another time, my co-worker and I were blasting “Save the Best for Last” in the hallway, and Vanessa Williams walks out of her dressing room. Totally busted! I looked at her out of fear for a split second, but then she chimed in and sang with us.

...I turned around and it was Lindsay f#*king Lohan.

There was this Patricia Fields gold feathered bollero coat with kaleidescope diamond buttons that sat on a hanger all season. During wrap, Pat was throwing it the trashcan, looked at me, and asked if I wanted it because it was something she said I’d wear. I died! Q: If you could give Minnesota girls (and guys!) ONE fashion tip, what would it be? Midwesterners are a special breed. We have the knowledge, resources and desire to be fierce. But we tend to be modest. If people are going to stare, make it worth their time. Don’t be a drag, just be a queen! Dress for YOU, be your own iconoclast.

Signed: J
