We’ve had long-running themes in our magazines which we use to guide our articles and stories. Our August editions have always celebrated the wonderful, inspiring, innovative and entrepreneurial women of the North Coast, and the team has produced a great edition that I am sure you will enjoy!

This edition got me thinking about the team I get to work with at FabMags, and I feel it would be remiss of me not to mention them.

If you didn’t know, FabMags publishes 14 print magazines and 10 digital magazines, each with varying numbers of editions per year. It’s a job we really love doing, but it also takes some delicate balancing (and juggling) to take ideas and concepts, discussed and debated around a table, to full-blown articles with photos and stories that make it onto the pages of our

I appreciate this team deeply, and whilst they have worked so hard behind the scenes to celebrate the women in the stories of this edition, I would like to express my appreciation of them and the extraordinary work they do!

I hope you enjoy all of our stories and features. Do take a second to stop on page 48 to read ‘So South African!’. It was a cool collaboration with Wozza Meat Co. and Home Grown Fresh Whole Foods that had us cooking, braaing and doing our very own photo shoot.

Till we chat again. Enjoy!

God Bless.

DESCRIBE YOUR ULTIMATE FRIDAY NIGHT OUT

My ultimate Friday night out with friends involves sitting in The Market at Lifestyle Shopping Centre and ordering from the variety of food stalls while listening to live music.

THE PERFECT PLACE FOR A GIRLS’ NIGHT IS…

Yori Oki for some delicious sushi and signature cocktails! Then, why not walk on over to 45 on Eat Street for the best white chocolate balls and honeycomb dessert?

BALLITO THROUGH THE EYES OF A LOCAL!

WHERE IS A MUST-VISIT PLACE FOR A FIRST-TIMER?

I would encourage them to indulge in a meal at Sala Beach House while overlooking the ocean. Every time I have gone there, I have spotted dolphins in the ocean. The food is incredible, and I highly suggest a full body massage at their spa.

YOUR FAVOURITE ADRENALINEFILLED ACTIVITY?

I absolutely love playing Padel with friends. It’s a social sport that anyone can play. There is always a fun vibe at the Africa Padel courts at Salt Rock Country Club.

THE BEST CUP OF COFFEE?

Definitely Salt Rock Coffee Company, without a doubt!

DO YOU HAVE ANY LOCAL TRADITIONS?

I try to go to the Elaleni Beach Club as often as the weather allows. Weekends spent there, swimming, tanning and braaing, are just that much better.

Sea S on fo R a Rea S on

If you hadn't tried to grow a vegetable garden by the time COVID hit us, I’m sure by this stage you have attempted to do so. The definition of germination is the development of a plant from a seed, after a period of dormancy. Picture holding that seed in the palm of your hand - it’s really nothing to look at and there’s little goodness in eating it. To most, this seed is worthy of being overlooked and tossed into the dustbin. Put that same seed in the hand of a farmer or an avid gardener, and the potential of a tree that bares fruit season after season is envisioned.

We can learn from nature to inspire and encourage us because we, like a seed, go through seasons, cycles and changes in our lives (whether we choose them or not). A seed to begin with is pushed down into the dark soil, stood on by others, and even forgotten, yet underground transformation is taking place. At the right time, the seed will rise out of the dark place, reach up to the sky, and grow under the sun, allowing the deepening of its roots to help it stand strong.

In life, one may go through times of feeling insignificant, dormant or forgotten, and at the same time, others may seem to be surpassing, flourishing and successful. Growth below the external surface and development within your core is not easily noticed by peers and extended family. This simply means transformation has not taken place at ground level… yet! Keep going, because a season is a season for a reason. It can't last forever.

Spring is my favourite season because it comes after the cold, harsh winter. The lovely KwaZulu-

Natal climate doesn't show a vast seasonal change, however, growing up in Johannesburg, I know a cold winter all too well. At first glance, the peach tree outside our kitchen window at the end of every winter looked bare, dry and dead. As spring approached, small pops of beautiful pink blossoms would slowly appear until the entire tree changed and came alive with potential and signs of fruit to come. What seemed dead or dormant was actually very much alive and just holding out for the right time.

Believe in the process that has brought you this far. Do not give up but rather see yourself going through a change of season. Be kind to yourself in the season you are in right now. Believe that the pops of blossoms and the joy they bring will come again. See the potential in every seed.

THE DE TIAMO LIFESTYLE

Every successful entrepreneur will tell you a similar story: you quickly learn to embrace failure as a learning opportunity and need to consistently maintain a growth mindset to keep your goals in focus. But, it’s also important to add one more attribute: courage for the times you need to take that leap of faith!

Debbie, the founder of the popular DE TIAMO linen clothing range, looks back at her journey, fondly remembering her first sewing machine which was gifted to her as a teenager by her mother. This ignited her passion for sewing and design.

She trained as an image consultant and worked in that field dressing corporate clients for success. Debbie constantly honed her design and sewing skills, soon applying these in a factory setting, expanding her range to include tennis wear and later soft home accessories. These layers of experience and skills laid the foundation that enabled her to realise her dream, giving her the creative freedom to design and launch her own fashion range.

The challenge for many of us is putting together a coordinated outfit that looks great, is fuss-free, is easy to wear, and can be layered for all weather

conditions, while creating texture and visual interest. This is where Debbie’s expertise shines. She realised there was an opportunity in the fashion industry for an exclusive range of women’s clothing, classically styled and immaculately finished, to enable women to build a foundation wardrobe that flattered all body types.

“I wanted to create the type of clothing I enjoy wearing - timeless designs in top-quality fabric, featuring Euro-chic styled in Euro-chic style and finished to international standards. Thus DE TIAMO was born - a range of smart casual wardrobes with seasonal additions of pop colours and new

22 | www.TheBalliTomagazine.co.za

styles. It was important for me to get the right fabric, and I searched until I sourced the best natural linens that breathe and drape well for comfort and elegance. I wanted my range to have international style with an African heart.”

Debbie adds, “I enjoy the challenge of enhancing each woman’s self-image. When you know you are looking your best, you feel wonderful - poised and ready for success!” Her collection is designed to suit all ages and her carefully selected colour range allows for an effortless mix and matching of dresses, tops, pants, shorts and jackets - while maintaining understated glamour. Debbie has also sourced an exciting selection of accessories - both local and international - chosen to complement the linen garments.

What is remarkable about Debbie’s entrepreneurial journey is that she has opened up unique opportunities for a team of ladies she has mentored: from training them to become expert seamstresses how to operate in the retail market and how to co-ordinate

product launches. This has broadened their horizons while up-skilling them. Inside each DE TIAMO garment, you will find a swing tag proudly bearing the name of the seamstress who constructed it.

Now that Debbie has realised her dream of producing her distinctive fashion label, what is next? It appears that Europe beckons with the launch of the range in the UK this July and then to expand into Europe. It seems as though there will be no stopping DE TIAMO.

You can shop the DE TIAMO range on-line at www.detiamo.co.za or visit one of their selected retail partners (Adele Catherine in Kloof or Coull Cotton in Ballito). Alternatively, treat yourself to a meander to Terbodore Coffee Shop in the KZN Midlands where you can browse the full linen range as well as the curated collection of complementary international and locally sourced accessories.

Who is dr kayla andreW?

I am a medical doctor and run my own private practice, Derma Lab, in Salt Rock. We specialise in medical aesthetics and anti-aging interventions. I grew up in the farming town of Underberg, and this has shaped me as a person and doctor. I value community, authenticity and natural beauty deeply.

Why medical aesthetics?

Medical aesthetics has been a natural path for my creative spirit as it is a field where true skill respects the balance between medicine, science and art. I have always had an artistic eye and love for details which has helped me excel.

hoW did you end up Where you are today?

I received my medical degree at the university of Pretoria and qualified with a bachelor of surgery and medicine. During my community service year, I completed a course in aesthetic dermatology and found a field of medicine that I absolutely loved! I spent the next four years doing GP work and then full-time medical aesthetics work before taking the big step to open my own practice

What is it like Working as a female in this profession?

I love being a woman working in this profession! Don’t get me wrong - it's

been hard to get here and the medical world is still traditionally a bit patriarchal. But I feel that women have a natural affinity for aesthetics, beauty and being detail-orientated, all of which makes for a good aesthetic physician!

What inspires you to Work hard in your field, pushing boundaries and making strides? Seeing a patient’s boosted confidence and self-esteem after a successful treatment is the most rewarding thing to me. Another aspect that drives me is educating my patients on aesthetic treatments and their options. Social media, celebrities, and over-injected faces sometimes portray a ‘fake look’ and have created a stigma around cosmetic treatments. We can age

gracefully but just slower with microoptimisations that retain our natural look.

What advice Would you give other Women starting out in your field of Work?

Invest in training and education so that you can take pride in your patients and your work. Aesthetics is growing and evolving so there is always something new to learn! Respecting a patient’s individuality is critical to achieving elegant, natural results that enhance already beautiful features - the best treatments are barely detectable.

Who is Julia rutherfoord?

I have been a resident of Salt Rock since 2006 and am married with three boys. Our family cherishes the community and all share a passion for surfing and admiring Ballito's stunning coastline. I am an architect and have built an impressive portfolio of luxury residential properties since establishing Julia Rutherfoord Architect

Why architecture?

I have always been interested in how sustainable luxury architecture can minimise environmental impact while upholding exclusivity, modernity, and superior standards. I firmly believe in the

boundless potential of architecture and endeavour to create bespoke spaces that embody and promote sustainability while celebrating my client’s individuality.

hoW did you end up Where you are today?

My passion for sculpture and fine art sparked my interest in architecture, leading me on a journey encompassing studying in KZN, work experience in Budapest Hungary at the Journeyman School under Imre Makovecz, and the opportunity to exhibit my work at the ECC-Venice Biennial! I started Julia Rutherfoord Architect in 2010 when I was pregnant with my second son and wanted to work from home. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.

It's hard work, but I am forever grateful for the support of my clients and team.

What is it like Working as a female in this profession?

I have not found any challenges as a woman in this profession. No matter who you are, I believe that personal growth and success in your profession stem from relentless self-competition as well as collaboration with talented, like-minded professionals and having the best team.

What inspires you to Work hard in your field, pushing boundaries and making strides? My focus lies in designing with an unwavering commitment to preserving the magnificent environment of Ballito, projecting its timeless beauty for the next 50 to 100 years. My primary aim is to minimise the ecological footprint of my designs, striving to create a lasting legacy that not only safeguards the environment but also nurtures a healthy future for generations to come.

What advice Would you give other Women starting out in your field of Work?

Work hard, be better every day, and treat others with kindness, as one never knows who might provide invaluable assistance along the way. It is also so important to maintain a curious mindset to continually explore and develop sustainable building methods and designs.

When I’m not treating patients or attending to other practice matters at SchrÖder & Macquet Physiotherapy, it fills my cup to spend time with my little family and close friends.

Why physiotherapy?

Each person is unique in their build and biomechanics, so this provides a constant challenge when getting them back to their optimal function, which is wonderful! It seems that it was always in me to work in a “helping profession”, as my Grade 2 self thought she wanted to be a nurse to help people walk. A few years later, I decided I wanted to be a physiotherapist.

hoW did you end up Where you are today?

After completing my studies at UCT and my community service year at Emmaus Hospital in the Drakensberg, I joined a practice in Ballito and started up its hospital branch. Seeing predominantly orthopaedic patients and having a variety of sports injuries, headaches, muscle tears and joint pains in the rooms makes for a wonderful array of patients to treat. A few years down the track, I became a partner in the practice and took over the running of it.

What is it like Working as a female in this profession?

Surprisingly, physiotherapy is actually a female-dominated profession! We do work alongside many male healthcare professionals and doctors comprising the multi-disciplinary team. I have never experienced not being respected or appreciated because of my gender.

What inspires you to Work hard in your field, pushing boundaries and making strides? The world is ever-changing and research is always ongoing, so we always keep learning and moving forward to hopefully

better ourselves and our profession. This inspires me and makes me want to be an example for my daughter: to live a wellbalanced life, be adaptable, keep learning, and take opportunities when they come my way.

What advice Would you give other Women starting out in your field of Work?

Physiotherapy is a truly wonderful career where science and art meet. There is clearly a strong scientific backbone, but I do believe there is an element of art in how techniques are performed - every physio has their own way. It is also very broad in scope, so the option to diversify or develop a special area of interest is always there.

As the years go by, and medicine and technology advances, we learn more about our bodies and how to take better care of them. Being a woman, there are some examinations that we ought to be doing on a routine basis, and a mammogram is one of them.

Mammography is a sensitive and private examination. Most Mammography centres being in hospital settings, it can be a daunting experience being surrounded by other patients. For Women 3D Mammography Centre offers state-of-the-art facilities and expert advice for women outside of a hospital setting, making the overall experience much more comfortable. This centre was created to provide an out of hospital facility where patients can have their X-rays, routine Mammography examinations and Bone Densitometry tests done, as well as ultrasounds. The Centre is situated in the Ballito Junction Regional mall on the top floor between entrance 1 and 2. We spoke to them about the importance of mammograms, risk factors and preventative solutions. Ladies, listen up!

So, what is a mammogram? In the simplest explanation, it is images

of the breasts which show internal structures. Not only does it show the internal structures of the breast tissue, it can detect any abnormal cells as small as 1mm in diameter. This means that breast cancer can be detected on the 3D Mammography images before it is clinically felt during a physical examination, thus making it the most accurate tool to find breast cancer in early stages. Mammograms also show other types of tissue structures such as benign (non-cancerous) lesions, and can show any changes in the breasts.

According to statistics, women over 40 are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer, but there have been increasing reports of breast cancer presenting in younger women in more recent years. There are several risk factors that may increase a woman's risks of developing breast cancer, and this includes smoking, alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, stress and having a family history of breast cancer.

Fluctuating levels of hormones in the body, especially oestrogen, also increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Among other factors, some surprising risk factors include having

30 | www.TheBalliTomagazine.co.za
Breast cancer can be treated efficiently, but For Women emphasise early detection because it does make all the difference

children after the age of 30, and the use of HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy).

There are external factors that increase risks such as products that may contain carcinogenic agents (substances which can cause cancer) that may be present in preserved foods and other products with long shelf lives. Always check labels on food and even deodorants to see if it may contain harmful chemicals. Going for an annual Mammogram is essential for all women over the age of 40, as early detection saves lives. What can you do in the interim? For Women 3D has a comprehensive guide on their website on how to do self-checks and they invite women to make an appointment where they can further assist patients with all important information about breast health and self-care.

For Women 3D Mammography

Centre encourages women to do self-breast examinations every month, as this will assist women to better understand what ‘normal’ feels like for them. They also advise that all young women should begin doing selfchecks as soon as they have fully developed breasts. It has been proven that we as women are the first to detect any abnormality. Self-breast examinations assist women to become more familiar with their bodies and aid in early detection of any changes. So, it’s time to become better acquainted with your breasts!

The best time to do self-checks is three to five days after the start of a menstrual flow. This is when you will get the most accurate read on how your breasts are supposed to feel. Due to hormonal fluctuations throughout your cycle, your breasts may feel more tender or lumpy due

| 31 www.TheBalli T omagazine.co.za l ocal

to cycle hormonal changes. For some patients, it may be normal to experience pain or discomfort prior to their monthly cycle and this can vary from person to person. If the pain persists, it is highly recommended to consult with a physician. Any sudden changes noted to the breasts should not be taken lightly, as breast cancer does not always present the same in all patients.

Doing these regular self-checks and annual Mammogram scans all ensure that early detection is possible. Just like any cell in the body, a cancerous cell will start off small and grow larger over time. Early detection means finding abnormal cells in the breasts where it is still relatively small and the process to remove these cells is far less invasive than removing larger cancerous masses. At later stages, when the cancer cells have metastasised

to other organs, treatments tend to be more aggressive, invasive, and the chances of survival may be slim.

It is not worth taking unnecessary risks with one’s health. “We see a lot of patients who have gone through a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments, and it is an extremely emotional and traumatic experience for those patients,” For Women advises.

For Women emphasises the importance of early detection, because it does make all the difference to the quality life that a patient will have after treatment. Let’s take the time to get to know our bodies and do those annual check-ups. Don’t wait until it is too late!

Awelcome addition, “fika.” recently opened its doors at The Wetland Clubhouse on Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate. With an assortment of delectable food and bubbles on hand, residents and food enthusiasts celebrated the launch and got a taste of what’s to come. Heading the eatery are Stephen and Ros Ivey, a husband and wife duo with 16 years of experience in the food industry. Along with managing well-known establishments, the couple has developed an independent health food brand, established online stores, and distributed nationally acclaimed bone broth. They are passionate about the community and focus on sourcing local ingredients for their dishes.

“We are so proud to be part of the Zululami family, and we look forward to connecting with and serving the community at large. The culmination of this opening is like a dream come true. All the years we have spent honing and perfecting our craft has led to this and we could not be more excited,” says Ros.

The distinct name is inspired by the Swedish word “fee-ka”, which expresses the art of connecting over coffee and a meal. This reflects the essence of the eatery as more than just a dining experience, but an opportunity to slow down, pause and nurture relationships. It’s a space to foster connection, relaxation, and enjoyment for both families and individuals. “fika.” incorporates a cafe and deli counter, offering a

delightful array of dishes, including takeaways. Open from Tuesday to Sunday as a daytime offering only at this stage, they have plans for further expansion, with a convenient shopping experience on the cards.

Ros continues, “At fika., our primary approach is to foster inclusivity and cater to the diverse needs of our patrons. While we will offer a menu showcasing our culinary expertise, we also value the input and suggestions from the community. We aim to be flexible and adaptable, ensuring that our service puts the needs of our customers first. Our vision is to establish a genuine connection with our customers, making them feel heard, valued, and an integral part of the fika. family.”

Geoff Perkins, Head of Collins Residential, is excited about the new addition. “We are delighted to welcome fika. to the Zululami Clubhouse, which will serve as a versatile space for work, relaxation, laughter, sunsoaking, reading, eating, drinking, and for families and friends to enjoy, love, and connect. The opening of this unique space will not only benefit the residents of Zululami but also the broader North Coast community."

Jane, Megan & Philippa

Meet the owners of Moove, a wonderful family business located in Ballito. The matriarch, Jane Last (known as Janey), along with her daughter Megan Cilliers and daughter-inlaw Philippa, form a strong team. Megan, married to former Springbok rugby player Patric Cilliers, is a proud mom to three sons, Henry (six years old), Charles (four years old), and Robert (five months old). Philippa, who married into the family in 2018, has a son named William (two years old).

Recognising their combined skills, the trio embarked on a learning journey, building a product from scratch. They handled everything from creating prototypes and dealing with manufacturers to setting up a website and social media campaigns. In march 2022, they launched “moove”, fulfilling their dream of running a small business.

The Moove Bag is a convenient solution for parents on the go with the aim of simplifying outings. No longer do parents need to carry separate bags for toys, towels, and other essentials. The Moove Bag allows everything to be packed together effortlessly. By drawing on their own experiences as parents and conducting extensive market research, they developed the concept of a play mat that transforms into a carry bag with a simple drawstring pull. This innovation makes toy transportation and cleanup a breeze while fostering children's responsibility in tidying up.

The Moove Bag comes in various prints, but their best-seller is the South African Road map bag. They wanted the artwork to encourage interactive play and reflect the uniqueness of the South African market. The double-sided, reversible design features a trendy, colourful spot pattern on one side and a road map of South Africa on the other. It includes indigenous wildlife, landmarks, and other distinctive elements of the country.

Each family member plays a crucial role in the business. Megan, with a background in marketing and sales, takes care of stockists, sales, packaging, and shipping. Philippa, with expertise

in design and marketing, handles marketing, production, and artwork design. Jane, drawing on her background in interior design, manages the accounts and provides valuable business advice. Working together has been seamless for them, and they sometimes have to refrain from discussing work during family gatherings!

Their ultimate goal is to thrive as a family-run business and provide customers with a practical product that simplifies their lives and adapts to their children's growth from birth to childhood.

Janine & Philippa

After their marriage, Janine and her husband relocated to a farm in Gingindlovu, where they resided for two decades, nurturing their family of four children. During this time, Janine enthusiastically immersed herself in the culinary world, offering catering services for local weddings and events, organising a delightful monthly pop-up restaurant in her own home, and even imparting her cooking expertise to domestic workers.

In 2015, they sold their farm and bought Sage Café in Ballito. It was an exciting adventure that taught Janine valuable lessons about life, managing a team, building customer relationships, handling complaints, and the importance of innovation while meeting customers’ needs. Then, an amazing opportunity arose when they were offered Maroupi Wedding Venue. They sold the café and made the venue their main business. Along with the venue itself, Maroupi offers catering, decorations, and flowers for on-site weddings, as well as for larger off-site events.

Unfortunately, Janine fell ill last year, but her daughters stepped in to help with the previously booked weddings and events. Since then, Janine and her daughter, Philippa, have been working together, sometimes with assistance from Leigh and Kate, Philippa’s sisters. On a dayto-day basis, Janine manages logistics, procurement, ordering, and kitchen operations, while Phill handles advertising, quotes and invoices, oversees setup and coordination, and adds her artistic touch to most functions. They both find joy in making celebrations special, regardless of size.

Philippa gained experience in food styling after completing her degree, working on campaigns for well-known brands. However, due to the pandemic, she returned to Ballito and pursued online work, including copywriting and recipe development. Since joining her mother at Maroupi, she has significantly expanded the external catering aspect of the business, known as The Crooked Fork and Phill's Food.

They also supply a range of deli products, such as hummus, brownies, pestos and chilli sauces, to select SPARs under the name Sage Kitchen. Additionally, they run a small shop called The Village Shop in Umhlali, offering cakes, biscuits, and frozen meals.

Their ultimate mission is to establish themselves as the top choice for weddings and events on the KZN North Coast. They are resolute in their determination to work hard and fully commit themselves to achieving their goal.

Skilled Weaver

Gerald Mudzingwa, a native of Chiredzi, Zimbabwe, began crafting handwoven handbags at 18. His skills expanded when his mother taught him how to create baskets. Roughly four years ago, he began making and selling his hand-woven goods here in our town. His passion grew, leading him to design pot plant baskets and repair a broken laundry basket for a customer.

Inspired by customers' requests, he is constantly learning new custom designs. Gerald considers his products a part of his heritage, as woven baskets were traditionally used to store harvested grains and preserve seasonal fruits. We put on our most colourful outfits and headed to a Bollywood in Ballito class. Suvina Mahadaw, who has loved dance since she was six years old, offers Bollyfit, combined and advanced dance lessons. Suvina graduated in dance from Bharata Natyam and obtained her BA degree in dance and drama and a teachers diploma. After moving to Ballito, she found that there were not many Bollywood classes available, so she decided to start her own with a vision to connect people and spread the love for dance across borders.

We attended one of her combined classes, perfect for us beginners. You can see Suvina’s passion in every move. She also has a great knowledge of the various styles of Bollywood dance and incorporates this into her classes, so you can learn while you dance!

If you’ve tried Bollywood dance before, you’ll know that it can get quite complicated as your arms and legs move in different directions and patterns. I loved how Suvina simplified the choreography by focusing on the legs and feet first, then the upper body, before putting it all together in a festive Bollywood fashion. The high-energy sequences mean you definitely get your daily workout in while having a great time.

To attend one of Suvina’s cheerful classes, WhatsApp her at 076 535 7789

Next, we visited a studio that seems to do it all. We stepped into FootworX Dance Centre, ready to conquer a beginner hip hop class. This studio was founded by Natashia Hooman-Roets, a professional dancer and teacher with Theatre Dance Association (TDA) and Association of International Dance Teachers (AIDT) qualifications.

Natashia teaches most styles herself, including contemporary, jazz, hip hop, tap and even burlesque (for adults, teens and children), however, they also offer ballet classes taught by Royal Academy

of Dance (RAD)-qualified teachers. Whether you’re wanting to just let loose, develop your technique, perform on the stage, or complete dance examinations, they have a spot open on the dancefloor. Attesting to their success is the fact that FootworX is celebrating 10 years of business this October!

The years of experience are evident as Natashia was clear, precise and passionate during the class. Each movement of the choreography was carefully presented, with sequences repeated until muscle memory took over and they became second nature. What we found extremely helpful was that Natashia slowed down the music and, as we practised and became more confident, she slowly sped it up until we were dancing to the “actual” speed of the music - what looked like fast-paced choreography became very manageable!

We were able to (almost) master a hip hop routine and had a lot of fun, all while breaking a sweat! Make sure you get in touch with Natashia at 082 560 7861 to book your class.

Finally, we paired up for a beginners Latin and ballroom class with the studio Passion for Dance. Ryno Van Den Berg and Elena Tokarenko started their dance classes in Ballito in 2020 but have been dancing together for many years. The two are seven-time South African Latin American professional dance champions and have represented South Africa 13 times in world dance championships, among other achievements.

If you want to learn to perfect Latin American and ballroom dance, their classes are a mustattend. They also offer beginners classes for those who want to dance socially and private lessons to teach couples some moves for their first dance at their wedding. The pair

taught us the basics of boogie-woogie and mambo. Although the sequences were challenging, Ryno broke down each step carefully, and every move was repeated numerous times to perfect it before moving on to the next. When all these simple steps were put together with our partner, magic happened!

Ryno and Elena often demonstrate the sequences - it’s breathtaking watching them dance together.

Ryno shares that even when couples don’t get the choreography right in the first or even third class, he often sees them flourish later on, as the moves just “click”. Lucky for us, they have a new beginners group class for singles and couples starting 6 September! To join the class, contact Ryno on 079 188 5768

Looking for a tasty meal? Head to Jimbo's Burger Bar in Ballito, a new American-style diner with an authentic vibe. The place is decked out with pink neon lights, 3D art, arcade games, and even a 3D-printed pink dog at the entrance. Despite a small menu, the quality is top-notch, especially their three flavorful burgers.

Each burger has a choice of either one or two smash patties for an extra juicy experience. We had to go all in and get two! The OG burger is a delightful take on a classic cheeseburger, featuring BBQ, mayo, cheese, grilled onions, gherkins and butter lettuce - simply delicious! The Heat burger offers a smoky kick with spicy chipotle relish, cheese, gherkins and butter lettuce. It’s perfect for someone wanting

a bit of heat on their burger. And, you can’t miss out on The Rocker, a saucy delight with mustard, cheese, and butter lettuce that will have you licking your fingers. This was definitely my favourite!

Alongside any burger, you must try their fries - no excuses! Jimbo's crispy and well-salted shoestring fries are something to rave about. Instead of just enjoying a traditional tomato sauce, you have to try their homemade jalapeño mayo for a sweet, spicy and creamy dip. Wash it all down with a nostalgic glass bottle of Coca-Colathat’s right, a glass bottle!

What could go better with a burger than a milkshake? We finished off our feast with the creamy vanilla and choc chip Jimbo's Shake.

Now, let's talk about James, the creator behind these flavour explosions. Inspired during the COVID lockdown when James couldn’t enjoy his favourite burger place, he started making smash burgers using limited kitchen equipment. The positive feedback from friends led him to buy a couple of things off Takealot, namely a flat grill! So, with the idea to start off catering for small events, the ball started to roll, and eventually he invested in a food truck. After seeing how great it was going, James decided to put it all on the line and quit his job to open a fully-fledged shop.

With support from his friends, family and the local restauranteurs, he now gets to serve up fresh and juicy burgers daily. Using quality ingredients from a local butcher and bakery, you can taste his love and dedication. Join James in his mission to spread love through cheeseburgers and indulge in one yourself!

Tending to Your Wilderness Within

In this moment, imagine your ‘wilderness within’ as a lush and bountiful garden that lives within you. This is the garden of your psyche. It's your internal safe and sacred space. I like to imagine this space as a meeting place for your soul and spirit to conspire for your highest good.

Now consider the fact that as a child, your caregivers and community were tasked with planting seeds in the garden of your psyche. Sometimes they did so purposefully, planting seeds with care in terms of values. At other times, they were unconscious of what they were planting.

Studying how the seeds were planted, and who planted them, is not a pursuit of blame. It's simply a pursuit of understanding why we are the way we are. In understanding what is growing in our garden, we can carefully eradicate invasive species. We can also sprinkle compassion into our watering bucket knowing that there is nothing innately wrong with the way we are. We simply adapted in ways that kept us safe, accepted and accommodated.

Since we aren’t taught how to care for the garden of our psyche, when we consciously arrive at our wilderness

within, it is often in shambles. The grass and bushes are overgrown. It's a mess, but it is your sacred space and therefore your conscious responsibility.

As any good gardener knows, the first step to getting your garden in order is to visit it regularly. Return to it every day with patience, just to become comfortable with the state it's in. If you keep returning, and if you begin to nurture this garden of yours, the birds will soon learn your name. You'll become accustomed to the dirt between your toes and begin to delight at the way the wildflowers are somehow finding a way to bloom.

Simply returning daily and being with what is, is such a vital part of this

process. It’s finding the time every day to become mindful, regulate and arrive in this present moment. Growing our awareness is the subtle act of noticing, of paying closer attention to our days, and of becoming a witness to how we’re reacting to our external world. Then we can begin to weed our gardens and plant our own seeds.

In the physical paradigm, these rituals may look like taking a walk in nature and making a point to notice the trees, the birds, the sky, and the way your feet tread the path. It may also look like blocking off an evening for yourself dedicated to moving your body, tuning into your breath, and spending time in your wilderness within.

WHat’S tHe Big deal aBoUt PetS and PRoPeRty?

Okay, so before I kick off this article, I have a confession to make. I’m not a journalist and therefore am unapologetically biased when it comes to this subject. I do however have plenty of professional experience and insight on the subject and my own personal pet journey. My stance is simple. More often than not, pets are one of the biggest deciding factors when purchasing a residential property. This means that estates and sectional title developments that limit the number or species of pets, or prohibit them altogether, generally reduce their buyer pool significantly and in certain markets can compromise property values. Right, so now that I’ve made my position clear, let me provide some insight.

There is a mountain of evidence to back up the theory that pets, specifically dogs and cats, provide their pet parents with various mental and physical benefits, including a sense of belonging, connection and contentment. It’s been found that sitting quietly and stroking your pet’s coat can trigger the release of oxytocin, the so-called ‘love hormone’. To be honest, this is a relief to me as I often question whether my love for our family dogs is at all normal or healthy. The bottom line is that despite the chaos and expense they often bring to our lives, pets are an integral part of family life and are often unwitting decision-makers in the home-buying process. Moreover, in a market such as the North Coast, the buyer profile clearly points to young families and retirees, many of whom enjoy the companionship of a family pet.

We work across a number of premier lifestyle estates and markets and have witnessed first-hand the impact that pets have on property values and decision-making. I’ve also sat on various

homeowners associations and debated pet policies that in many cases are arbitrarily constituted and cut and pasted from a neighbouring estate without so much as a second thought or discussion. I’ve heard all the arguments, for and against, but ultimately I’m a firm believer in taking a more reasonable, common-sense approach. Why should we restrict ownership to two dogs and not three? Why only dogs and no cats? Why only dogs under 20 kilograms? (That would rule out my robust chocolate labrador by the way).

An argument by some eco and wildlife estates in KZN, including our area, is that dogs shouldn’t be allowed due to the impact on wild game, whereas some of the top residential wildlife estates in Hoedspruit, for example (including the one that Tom Cruise lived in for a few months while shooting a movie), allow dogs, and simply ensure some basic rules and behaviours are enforced. This has opened up their product to a far wider buyer pool and created a well-balanced resident profile.

Whilst rules and restrictions, not just about pets, have their place in order to manage and maintain a degree of consistency and harmony in gated estates or complexes, they can also lead to management headaches, unnecessary tensions and restrictive buyer pools. With so many other considerations and areas to concern oneself with, I think we should give the family pet a break and become a bit more understanding of their value and impact on our lives.
