s I write this letter from Texas, immersed in a fiveweek adventure exploring communities that are distinctly different yet surprisingly similar to ours, I find myself reflecting deeply—and admittedly a touch nostalgically—about Umhlanga.
Texans carry an unmistakable love and passion for their towns, cities, and state— something you immediately sense here. This pride isn't superficial or symbolic; it's intricately woven into their rich history, diverse culture, and genuine community spirit. You notice it in the friendly nods exchanged between strangers, the proud conversations about their heritage, and their earnest belief that every individual contributes meaningfully to their unfolding story. This experience prompted me to reflect on Umhlanga—our dynamic, diverse, and ever-evolving coastal gem. We might not yet boast the extensive traditions Texans cherish, but we possess something equally extraordinary: an incredible community enriched by a legacy of resilience, innovation, and inclusivity.
But what does that mean for our future? It begins with intentionally embracing and nurturing all that is positive, celebrating our collective achievements, and never settling for anything less than fairness, equality, and justice. Genuine growth thrives on connection and collaboration— something I believe The Umhlanga magazine champions in every edition.
With every page, we aim to showcase the individuals, businesses, and ideas that reflect our spirit. Whether it's a heartwarming family business story, a creative local startup, or a glimpse into someone’s unique lifestyle in our "My 031" section—these stories embody the "magic sauce" that makes Umhlanga so special. Yet building the Umhlanga of our dreams requires ongoing effort. It demands staying connected, openly sharing ideas, and engaging in meaningful conversations—even the challenging ones. True joy, gratitude, and peace often arise from periods of struggle and uncertainty. For us, these challenges are opportunities to gain clarity, find common ground, and foster meaningful growth. As you turn these pages, let’s honour our community and embrace our responsibility to lay a lasting foundation for future generations. Let’s commit—individually and collectively—to remain engaged, foster authentic dialogue, and celebrate the incredible uniqueness of the place we call home. Every story in this edition, and each before it, represents a vibrant thread in the tapestry that makes Umhlanga genuinely exceptional.
I truly believe our best days lie ahead, and I’m genuinely excited to share that journey with you all. See you soon—enjoy the read!

The Power of Mindfulness
WORDS NQOBILE MAPHUMULO
In the fast-paced world we live in today, it’s easy to lose sight of ourselves. The demands of work, family, and daily life can often overshadow the need for self-care. We find ourselves rushing from one task to the next, consumed by the chaos around us, and in doing so, neglect our own well-being. As a clinical psychologist, I’ve seen first-hand how this self-neglect can impact mental, emotional, and physical health. The practise of mindfulness can be an essential tool in combating this disconnect from self and reclaiming our well-being.
Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and engaged in the current moment. It’s about paying attention to what’s happening around and within you without judgment. However, many of us, in the hustle of everyday life, fail to practise this essential skill. We go through the motions of daily life without ever truly “clocking in” with ourselves. We don’t pause to check in with how we feel, how we’re managing stress, or how our emotional state may be affecting our relationships and overall quality of life.
The consequences of this neglect are significant. Over time, self-neglect can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and even physical illness. When we don’t take the time to care for our own mental and physical health, we begin to feel disconnected from ourselves. We may feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and unable to cope with the challenges life throws our way. This ongoing cycle of stress and neglect can eventually erode our sense of well-being and inner peace.
So, how do we break this cycle? The answer lies in practising mindfulness and prioritising self-care. Taking the time each day to pause, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves can make all the difference. Mindfulness allows us to observe our thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them. It encourages us to tune into our bodies, paying attention to any tension or discomfort, and responding with kindness and care.
You don’t need to engage in elaborate practises to reap the benefits of mindfulness. Simply taking a few minutes each day to sit quietly, close your eyes, and focus on your breath can help you return to a state of balance. Incorporating small acts of self-care, like journaling, walking in nature, or indulging in a favourite hobby, can also nourish your mind, body, and spirit.
Remember, you are your most important asset. Amid life’s demands, it’s crucial to create space for yourself. By practising mindfulness and embracing self-care, you’ll be able to manage stress better, improve your emotional well-being, and ultimately thrive in the chaos of life. Take time today to check in with yourself—you deserve it.

A Coastal Haven for the Well-Versed Gastronome
The pursuit of an exceptional dining experience is both an art and a pleasure—one that requires a seamless balance of refined cuisine, impeccable service, and an atmosphere of effortless sophistication. Nestled within the ever-evolving Umhlanga precinct, where luxury retail, upscale eateries, and curated lifestyle spaces have shaped a cosmopolitan enclave of indulgence, Signature Restaurant has found its place with quiet confidence. Here, elegance, flavour, and a touch of the extraordinary converge in what can only be described as perfect harmony.
Founded by acclaimed restaurateur Desmond Mabuza, Signature has become an integral part of Umhlanga’s dining landscape, bringing a distinctive sense of occasion to the coast. More than just a restaurant, it is a destination where time slows, conversations linger, and every detail is designed to be savoured. A space where art is infused deeply within the interior design scheme, from sculptural walls to gorgeously curated pieces from South African artists.
At Signature Umhlanga, dining is not a mere necessity but a celebration. The menu is an ode to precision and artistry, offering a selection of dishes that highlight the finest ingredients, masterful techniques, and a deep appreciation for both classic and contemporary. The coastal setting inspires a focus on the freshest seafood, elegantly prepared to honour its natural depth and character. Beyond the ocean’s bounty, succulent cuts of meat, artfully composed vegetarian dishes, and decadent desserts ensure that every guest, no matter their preference, finds something to indulge in. This is a place where every plate tells a story—of craftsmanship, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
An evening at Signature is best accompanied by a glass of something truly special. With an impeccably curated wine cellar (and award-winning wine list), guests are invited to explore a world of exceptional vintages and rare finds. But for those who seek a wine that speaks to the very essence of Signature, the restaurant’s own Signature Wines—crafted by Desmond Mabuza and his head Sommeliers—are a fitting choice. These red and white blends have been
designed with the Signature diner in mind— offering refined complexity, elegance, and a sense of celebration in every sip. They’re exclusively available from the restaurant; either to enjoy at the table or to take home to the cellar.
"The idea behind Signature Wines was to create something that enhances the moment—something that feels effortlessly sophisticated yet deeply personal," says Desmond Mabuza. "For us, a great wine doesn’t just complement a meal; it becomes part of the memory."
The red blend is Shiraz driven, bold, layered, and refined—perfect for pairing with rich, savoury dishes—while the white blend is Chenin driven; crisp, bright, and evocative of long summer evenings by the sea. Together, they embody the art of fine living, a sentiment that is woven into the very fabric of Signature as a brand, and as a lasting memory of sipping at the seaside or in the city.
The Signature experience is so much more than dining—it is a space designed for intimate encounters, grand celebrations, and everything in between. With 150 seats, a private dining room for 14, and an exclusive cigar lounge that accommodates 30-40 guests, the restaurant offers an array of refined spaces to suit any occasion. Whether it is a milestone celebration, a business gathering, or simply an evening of unhurried indulgence, Signature Umhlanga is a place where every experience feels like a moment worth savouring.
For those who appreciate the finer details— the weight of a well-polished crystal glass, the whisper of a perfectly seared scallop, the warmth of candlelight against the backdrop of an ocean breeze—Signature Umhlanga offers a dining experience that does not seek to impress, but simply to belong among the best.

Cooking since 13-years-old, his father taught him how to cook for survival, learning an unorthodox way of cooking. “He would instruct me to heat up cooking oil and throw in unevenly chopped onions and ‘runaway’ meaning I should step back to avoid oil spills,” Chef Themba reminisces.
He developed a love of food on the job, working in the late Martin Lombard’s restaurant El Cubano which evolved to Havana Grill and Little Havana. He now works as a consultant chef and as a private chef, creating memories through good food between Umhlanga and Ballito, where he also hopes to open a restaurant one day.

Growing up in a household where Sunday lunch was a big thing, she spent a lot of time on her grandparents’ farm in Ixopo. Sunday roast was always followed by a delicious dessert and Chef Marcelle soon got involved and fell in love with baking. Eventually, she took over the dessert and must’ve baked every single recipe in the Kook en Geniet before the age of 13! After school, she studied at Christina Martin School of Food and Wine. Back in SA, she eventually settled at Café 1999, opening a pizzeria, a craft beer bar and a brewpub attached to their brewery.
At the end of 2024, Marco Conte from the Marco’s and Mama Luciana brands approached her and proposed to reopen Café 1999 in Umhlanga. They reopened the doors last year and haven’t looked back.

A local family’s story blends business with love, creating a space where connections and memories are made.
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
If there’s anyone you can count on in life, it’s your family. They’re always there when you need them to point you in the right direction and to lend a helping hand. Family-run businesses require a gentle balance between keeping family and business separate. It’s a challenge, but also rewarding as your bonds with each other grow and strengthen. Hidden under a canopy of trees in La Lucia lie family-run Beside Still Waters Boutique Hotel, Gatvol Coffee, Neighbourhood Café, and Teddi Vandersteen. Within this little oasis, you’ll find an open-air, lush garden space with flowing streams, koi ponds, and trees decorated with fairy lights.
Their business started as a boutique hotel for out-of-town travellers. When COVID-19 hit, multiple family members were without jobs and the hotel was two months shy of closing down, taking the staff’s livelihood with it. So they decided
to open their gates to the public for the first time ever, using available resources to serve coffee and a basic menu. From runners and businesspeople to moms and Uber drivers, “neighbours” just kept showing up in support. Two years later, this is a space where strangers feel at home.
Parents, Mary Ann and Russell own and oversee the business, property, and maintenance. Russell makes sure everything runs without a hitch. Candice, their daughter, manages the boutique hotel, while her husband, Marchiano, runs Neighbourhood Café and Bar. Their other daughter, Sam, runs the kitchen and HR. Caleb, their son, runs Gatvol Coffee alongside his wife Teddi, who also has a tattoo studio, called Teddi Vandersteen, on the property. Their other son, Sphe, oversees guest relations and everything in between, while their daughter, Jasmin, manages social media and branding.
How do you separate family and business time?
Short answer—we’re working on it. When you work together, especially in hospitality with different demanding schedules, it’s hard to separate the two. But we find each other in the moments in between—in the hugs when times are tough and the laughter when Mary Ann pulls a prank on one of us and most of all, in the grandkids. Little Nevaeh and Reign are a blessing because they’re a constant pull for us to be present together.
How do you handle challenges working together?
The biggest challenge in any family business is defining where each person’s responsibilities start and end, and then working at staying within them to ensure everyone flourishes in their giftings. With that comes learning to trust each other’s unique abilities and perspectives and allowing each other to “run with it”.
Share a memorable moment from your journey as a family business
I think, for all of us, the moment that defined our journey was the day we realised we had two months left until we would need to sell our family home of 35 years along with the boutique hotel which was our only source of livelihood. We got around the dining room table, held each other’s hands, and prayed together. We prayed for new ideas, for God to take what was in our hands and make more of it. And today, more is here.
It hasn’t been easy, because with more blessings comes more responsibility, and we still have our scary months and moments. But it hasn’t changed where we run to in those moments. And it will never change our purpose to be a space where all types of people can come and feel a sense of home and belonging.
What advice do you have for families starting a business? Clearly define your roles. Respect each
This is a space where strangers feel at home " "
other’s expertise. Trust each other’s intuition. Treat every new thing as an experiment so that when it doesn’t work pride and fear don’t get in the way of trying again. But most of all pray together.

From brushstrokes to bold moves, we look at local artist Kylie Wentzel’s journey and passion for art.
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
When you write stories about the East Coast and the people in it, it’s easy to see how you get inspired to create from the beauty of this area. Kylie Wentzel is an artist, based here in Durban (you may know her from when she lived and worked in Umdloti!). Kylie graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town with a Fine Arts degree. “Art was always a part of my experience. I feel like I almost didn’t discover it, it was just inherently there from before I can remember,” Kylie recalls. Although she had her heart set on printmaking after art school, she shifted to painting when she felt like she needed a more flexible medium, “I felt a
desire to create more loosely—printmaking is generally quite a meticulous form of expression,” she explains. She paints with acrylics on canvas and generally creates large artworks.
“Living and working in Durban heavily influences the work I make. I paint from my bank of observations,” she shares. Kylie recently showcased her work at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, with 50ty/50ty prints. They create fine art prints with work from South African artists. Her work can be described as revisualising the people, creatures, objects, smells, sounds and scribbles she observes around Durban. “It’s always great to see such an incredible
showcase at the art fair. I feel privileged to show my work alongside so many talented artists,” she reports.
With her art being showcased locally and internationally, Kylie’s journey is only getting more exciting. Painting in Durban and sending the art abroad, her work continues to capture the people, places, and moments that make life interesting. And with an artist’s residency in Majorca, Spain, on the horizon, there’s no doubt that more incredible creations are on the way.

A Dynamic New Look for Expo Explore
The Expo Explore Court, near Sportsmans Warehouse, is also set to undergo a significant transformation, with an emphasis on aesthetics and functionality. A new escalator will be strategically positioned to improve convenience and accessibility between the two levels, providing more direct access to upperlevel stores from the lower-level court.
The space will be reimagined with updated floor tiling and refined treatment of existing demising columns, maintaining a cohesive design language in line
with the north mall’s ongoing upgrade. A striking raked ceiling installation with concealed feature lighting will be introduced to create a welcoming ambience. New clerestory windows will allow natural daylight to filter into the space, uplifting the overall shopping environment.
Looking Ahead
Gateway acknowledges the patience and support of its tenants and shoppers throughout the extensive renovation process. While construction presents challenges, the improvements made are
designed to ensure that Gateway remains at the forefront of retail and lifestyle trends, providing a dynamic and engaging experience for all who visit the centre for many years to come.
As Gateway continues the upgrade, the mall invites shoppers to discover the evolving transformation that is already reshaping the centre’s future.

Umhlanga has always been a big foodie hub and there has been a buzz about a little spot down near the Whale Bone Pier that we just had to try. Treat Street is a vibrant food truck section at the bottom of The Pearls with various delicious meals and drinks, making it the perfect spot for a classic FabMags Food Safari. Come along with me to see what the hype is all about!
As you enter, you are greeted, not only by a metal arch boldly displaying the name, Treat Street but by a plethora of aromas. Our adventure was meticulously planned with four lovely vendors, and it started with Smaquè Stack, a food truck that can satisfy your savoury taste buds with a juicy burger and more. If you think their name is unique, you should see how they named items on their menu (South African slang is cleverly used, so I took my time giggling while reading the different names).
The friendly staff knew exactly what we had to try… one of their Kuro Buns; a beef smash patty, cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce, caramelised onions with their signature secret smaquè sauce, all on an activated charcoal burger bun—not just Instagram worthy but smaquè-ing good! The other two popular items had a delicious spicy bite to them. The Okes Smash; two beef smash patties, two slices of cheddar cheese, thinly sliced Jalapeños and onion, in a brioche bun. And lastly, the Toasted Grilled Cheese Osch; two beef smash patties, Jalapeños, red onion, with cheddar, gouda, and mozzarella, toasted on a brioche bun— a toasted burger?! We can tell you now you HAVE to try it! Oh but wait, how can you have a burger without fries? Smaquè Stack has you covered with the trending waffle fries—crispy and packed with flavour.
cheddar,
Okay, you might be wondering when are we going to get to the “treat” in Treat Street… Well, hold your horses, this is a journey and I have short legs.
The next stop was a place that got my inner child screaming… Doxa Donuts. Do any 2000s babies remember those trays of hot mini donuts with chocolate or caramel sauce and sprinkles all over them? Oh yes… I am going to send your tastebuds back in time.
We were treated to their Downsize Tray which has five mini donuts, perfect for what Anthony would call “Today’s little sweet treat” — if you know you know. But we were also given their Standard Tray which
has 10 mini donuts and The Works Tray which has 10 mini donuts but with any three additional gourmet toppings… and the best thing is that all their mini donut trays are drenched in milk chocolate, white chocolate, caramel and cinnamon sugar, or you can just do one, no one is judging. You might think about what toppings I got, but in all honesty, we asked the staff member to surprise us as there was a lot to choose from. Doxa Donuts doesn’t just have mini donuts, they can quench your thirst too with a fizzy drink. With a few flavours, I decided on the passionfruit and lemonade and lastly
the cherry bomb (queue Joan Jett and The Blackhearts' “Ch, Ch, Ch, Cherry Bomb!”). I hope you have an extreme sweet tooth because there is another sweet spot to visit.
Lipt—a Hindi word which means indulge. This dessert truck offers you things you have never tried before and I am excited to share the goodness with you. Every South African knows what Pani Puri is, but now imagine a dessert version… the crispy shell filled with ice cream!
They have a few flavours but we indulged in the pistachio and new mango boba flavours… WOW, the bursts of flavour in these little shells will keep you coming back for more. To add to their unique menu, the owner and mother of two, had kids in mind and created the funfair taco, an ice cream taco that is every child's sweet tooth dream. A waffle cone taco shell filled with bubblegum ice cream,
candyfloss, marshmallows, sprinkles, chocolate drizzle and gummy sweets— sugar overload! Last but not least, they offer a crispy waffle on a stick that you can drizzle with chocolate and cover in sprinkles — nothing is ordinary, and I love it.
The very last stop on this food venture is a vendor that offers too many drinks to count. At Oceanfront Oasis Cafe, you can get your coffee fix on a cold day or a refreshing iced drink on a sunny beach day. For the health-focussed peeps, they have delicious smoothies (even flavours I could say you haven’t tried), and for the adults needing to take the edge off of a stressful week, there is a perfect list of
cocktails to give you that “zing”. The kids can enjoy a milkshake or a slushy, which I can say is yummy after getting their “everything” layered slushy.
Amongst the list we had two drinks that stood out to us, one was a Blueberry Iced Latte, a classic iced latte but with blueberry—a combo I would never have thought of nor tried but boy was I surprised. It was amazing. For the next drink, I wanted to prove to my past self that when it is authentic and done right, it tastes great. Matcha is a trending drink that derives from Japan and is a finely ground green tea leaf, known to have a slightly bitter and vegetal taste. I was intrigued to try the Matcha Strawberry Frappe… and I loved it! It was sweet and milky—my new favourite drink!
And with that, we come to the end of the food safari through Treat Street. A HUGE thank you to the amazing vendors for the experience and we can’t wait to see everyone try out all the deliciousness for themselves!

Old Town Italy An Evening in pasta-making with the Fab-Team
WORDS ELVIDA SYDNEY
In Umhlanga, there's a cosy little corner offering a slower pace of life from the usual rush. Old Town Italy is an Italian-inspired restaurant and they’re all about savouring the moment, celebrating ethics, preserving standards and rediscovering quality; you'll lose all sense of time as you step into this charming haven.
The Fab-Team gathered at Old Town Italy for a night of pasta-making, a class that’s run on a monthly-basis, and we finally got to experience it! They also offer pizza-making classes, perfect for a unique date night or a fun activity to enjoy with friends. The love could be felt and seen from the moment you walk in, from the warm greetings from the staff to the vintage décor bringing in the old romance aesthetic and the sweet pastries at the counter may as well have spelled out love, because my pupils dilated the moment I saw them!
General Manager Hedley Ridley eased us into the class, outlining the evening’s agenda. We began with delightful appetisers and drinks, a wonderful start already as we teased our taste buds with the flavours of the light antipasto.
We were then given hair nets and aprons to wear, which sparked a fit of giggles as we joked about our newfound 'chef' status. Our table was set up with bowls, our ingredients, and pasta machines, all ready with the brilliant Head Baker Thabiso Ndamane standing at the end, ready to start the class. Our dish was ravioli with a spinach and ricotta filling.
We learned that creating a simple twoingredient dough requires precision and patience, but the end result is well-worth the effort. After making our dough, we teamed up to roll out the dough into pasta sheets, with one person gently stretching it out as it came through the bottom and one person stretching the top. The sense of camaraderie and shared accomplishment was undeniable. We beamed with pride as we held up our finished sheets, knowing that we had created something truly special.
But the fun is not over! Our sheets were now ready to be cut into squares for the ravioli. With guidance from Thabiso, Hedley and Assistant Manager David Muir, we were shown techniques that they often use, making our experience a little extra special. We then rolled up our spinach and feta filling into little balls, placed it in the middle of our squares, added some egg wash, covered it with another square, and then forked the ends to secure our little pockets of love!
Time to turn up the heat in the kitchen!
After we'd all crafted our beautiful ravioli, we headed to the kitchen, queuing up to boil our pasta and then toss it in a rich arrabbiata sauce. With an extra dash of chilli and paired with a delicious piadina breadstick, we were all set for a wonderful dinner. As we sat down to enjoy our handmade creations, the sense of satisfaction was overwhelming. Throughout the evening, our waitress Lungisile Shange ensured we had everything we needed, from refreshing drinks to helpful assistance, making the experience truly enjoyable.
This was not just a cooking class—it was an immersive experience that brought us closer together and left us with memories to cherish. Dear foodies, this is an experience not to miss. And do keep an eye on their social pages for their Kid’s Baking Classes and Sip & Paint Classes!
"We experienced Old Town Italy’s celebration of slow food and artisanal craftsmanship,
gaining a fascinating glimpse of their rich heritage"
To the incredible Old Town Italy team for hosting us for an unforgettable evening! Not forgetting Melissa Maduray, Group Chef and Phindile Hlongwa, Senior Manager. Your warm hospitality made us feel like part of the familia and your passion for authentic Italian cuisine and culture shines through in every detail. We can't wait to come back and experience it all again!

Gifting Made Easy
From childhood Shop-Shop games to a passion for retail, The Fat Whale brings together over 95 South African brands in a curated space filled with homeware, décor, toys, and gifts for all ages. More than just a store, it's a celebration of small businesses and handcrafted quality. Get to know the owner, Malia Goosen.
How did your store begin?
"The Fat Whale" came about when we decided to split our original store "The Beach Shack" and focus solely on gifting and décor items back in 2017. Our family has a history of nearly 30 years in the retail industry so I mainly learned the ropes by working in stores since I was a young teen. Both of my parents have been pivotal in not only teaching me most of what I know but also inspiring me to work as hard as I do. In 2021, during the pandemic, our store relocated from Ballito to Durban North (Kensington Square on Broadway) and we've been here ever since.
Why focus on South Africanmade products?
Initially, we stocked a massive range of items from all over, but after the pandemic, there was an influx of new brands and people starting up their own creative businesses. As a result, there was SO much choice (and even more so now) to stock and support only local businesses. Even after being in the gifting industry for just over eight years, we are still amazed at how much local talent there is in SA. Shortly after relocating to Durban North, we decided to focus as much as possible
on stocking smaller brands, artists, and locally made products. We've found there's been a shift in many consumers' mindsets and they are purposefully looking to shop small wherever possible— including when buying unique and interesting gifts. Many of our customers come specifically to shop at our store as they enjoy supporting local brands.
How has supporting local businesses made an impact?
We've had some brands we've bought from, who have expressed how our orders have helped them survive another month of business or keep their side hustle alive. It makes a huge difference when you're ordering from an artist, maker or small team of people who handcraft their items from their kitchen counter, garage or studio. Not only do we feel good supporting brands such as these but our customers can also feel even better when they choose to shop small as a consumer. We've seen various brands grow tremendously over the past couple of years and it makes us so happy to know that we played even a small part in that. We now support nearly 100 different local brands from across the country who both
hand-make and source their products locally. It's true when they say " When you shop small, a literal person does a happy dance!"
What are some of your top gift picks this year?
Our focus in 2025 so far has been to keep looking for not only interesting items but also new brands to the creative gifting scene. Some of our favourite brands sell items such as handmade candles, delicious deli products, and beautiful bags and accessories. Various artists who have turned their work into useful items such as planners, notebooks, cards etc. also make great gifts. In terms of recommendations, you can't go wrong with choosing a few products that match well together to create a pretty gift box. One thing we always recommend to customers, especially those travelling overseas, is a little something inspired by Africa, such as a printed tea towel, fridge magnet or artisanal African soap. On our website, we have a collection dedicated to these items for those who'd like to browse online.
Any exciting new local products?
Yes, we're excited about several new brands that have joined our space this year! Some items include a range of upcycled wine bottle candles and handpainted African candles. A new
range of gorgeous tarnish-proof gold jewellery and a kiddies brand that makes gardening kits for children. We've also recently added a new range of African-inspired table runners and tea towels. We are always on the lookout for interesting new concepts and ideas so we know there will be even more to come this year!
What advice do you have for finding the perfect gift?
I think the most important thing to consider is how you'd like the gift to make the person feel when they receive it. It's always heartwarming when one receives a gift that's both useful and well thought out. When it comes to a gift box, we always suggest the customer start by choosing one item—perhaps they know their colleague loves the colour pink—and they choose a pink bath bomb. From there they could add some strawberry-flavoured tea and maybe a pair of pink earrings to complete the gift. Whether you choose one item or five items, we'll be here to help you through the entire process from budget to selection, wrapping, and even writing a card on your behalf!

Workplace Wellness Transforming
We take a look into Sheer Bliss and their mission to help employees recharge, reduce stress, and improve productivity by blending technology with relaxation techniques.
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
Aprominent topic around office work environments is wellness in the workplace. Issues like fatigue and burnout have become more than terms passed around in conversation, it’s a reality many working professionals deal with and overcome. Programmes are implemented to boost productivity and morale, and ergonomically sound furniture to aid in posture, all ultimately creating a pleasant atmosphere people want to be in. Sometimes, just a few minutes from your desk can make all the difference.
Founded by Nadine Malherbe in 2006, Sheer Bliss is a corporate massage company specialising in workplace wellness and massage for events. She started in the industry as a beauty therapist and built her business recognising the need for this service and creating flexible job opportunities for women. Dedicated to helping employees de-stress, improve their productivity and feel valued, they provide on-site massages. They create
tailored experiences designed to leave clients feeling refreshed and energised. Their vision is to create happy, healthy and productive staff by improving their working environment. Their reach is countrywide, with a branch in Durban North, their services extend to Umhlanga’s business hub.
The business has introduced solutions blending relaxation with technology to enhance the massage experience for every person with individual attention. We got to experience their services first-hand at our office. Our boardroom was transformed into a little haven as we took a seat and the skilled Amahle took care of us, one at a time. She got started by placing the VR headset on us and explaining how it works.
We were transported to an island with waves gently lapping at the
shore with a beautiful sunset. Next, she asked what level of pressure we would prefer, from soft, medium or hard. Then she got to work essentially massaging the stress out of our bodies, using pressure points. This massage is available in a 6, 10 and 15-minute option to give you much-needed time away from your desk and they don’t use any oils during their massages so you’re not left feeling sticky afterwards. The benefits of their treatments are farreaching. It's a well-deserved break and a tool to help you get tasks done.
Benefits include boosted productivity, focus, retention, morale, reduced absenteeism and created a positive company culture. They are also convenient and hassle-free, setting up with minimal disruption. They currently provide 50,000 massages annually and aim to increase that by 25% this year, expanding their impact and helping even more employees experience the benefits of workplace wellness.
There are also things you can do to supplement the services they provide to keep yourself healthy in the workplace. Things like stretching and moving regularly, staying hydrated, taking screen breaks and maintaining good posture all contribute to your overall workday experience. Sheer Bliss aims to combine simple habits with workplace treatments to keep employees feeling their best throughout the workday.

The Ultimate F1Experience
wonder of the Grand Prix and iconic attractions in Abu Dhabi
For a Formula One fan, witnessing a race live is one of the greatest experiences. While both my husband Gordon and I have been fortunate enough to attend a race before, those were separate trips we won years ago through our respective employers, so we’ve never been to a race together. It has always been my dream to go to the last race of the season, and 2024 was the year I felt we needed to go because for the first time in a long time, both the drivers and constructors’ championship was not a forgone conclusion… and my favourite driver happened to be a contender at the time of booking!
I explored our options from a travel agent, who was referred to me by a work colleague, as well as going via the sporting company that specialises in Formula One Packages. Ultimately, we decided to go to the travel agent Maria Dorazio from Waka Travel. Her service was outstanding! She took care of everything—flights and visas, and the F1 tickets included events!
The trip was everything and more than we could have ever imagined. We flew from Durban to Doha (with a quick stop in Maputo), then took a short flight from Doha to Abu Dhabi. Our hotel was about a 15-minute drive from the airport and, thankfully, we were able to have an early check-in for a small fee. We arrived at our hotel at 6:00 a.m., jet-lagged from the flight so we caught up on much needed sleep.
WORDS BERNISE BANNISTER
We added a few extra days to our trip, arranged by Maria, to do a bit more sightseeing. The desert safari was spectacular and a must-do experience. We also visited the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. We’ve been on many trips and seen many historic buildings before and this was so much more than I could have ever imagined! Tip: Time your visit; go before sunset so you get to see it in daylight, but also once the sun sets and the lights are on, both are truly magical sights. Don't forget to dress modestly, covering yourself from head to toe, as this is a requirement for entry.
We also spent a day at a local “free public beach”—this was such a treat. They had little beach pergolas which are on a first come, first serve basis, and we were fortunate enough to get one. There are free purified cold-water stations to fill your water bottles throughout the day, relaxing music playing via a PA speaker system along the promenade, and ample lifeguards on duty.
Our accommodation included a hearty breakfast buffet which we took full advantage of. We mostly grabbed dinner at the Yas Marina Circuit or at Yas Mall when we got tired of eating fast food. We found an amazing Thai restaurant in Yas Mall so we had a few nutritious meals there which were relatively affordable. Our hotel was about a 20-minute drive to the Yas Marina Circuit, but it did have a free shuttle service
to and from Yas Island every day. There were some nights when we used Uber to go back, having missed the shuttle when we stayed for the concerts which were included in our F1 tickets. On Thursday night it was Teddy Swims and Peggy Gou, Maroon 5 on Friday, Eminem on Saturday, and Muse on Sunday.
For the actual F1 event, we did the Pit Lane Walk and explored the massive circuit on Thursday. On Friday and Saturday were the practice and qualifying races, then on Sunday was the Grand Finale main race! All days included watching not just the Formula One sessions but also the Formula Two, and the F1 Academy which is the future of women in motor sport. Every grand stand had entertainment zones which had a DJ playing, Formula One merch shops and food and beverage gardens. The ablutions were also next level! Even with the massive amount of people at the event, I never once had to stand in a line to use the bathroom, they were squeaky clean, and air-conditioned!
We attended the “Drivers Interview” sessions in the Fan Park—we got to see and hear the drivers up close on stage! Sadly, we missed out on getting some signed merch due to us not being close enough to the front of the stage (lesson
learned for next time). The best way to end the F1 was that my favourite, Lando Norris, won the race which secured Mclaren the World Championship! I still get goosebumps thinking about it, knowing we were there to witness the thrills, hear the roar of those engines in real life and witness the spectacular fireworks displays after the race. The “watching Formula One live” bug has bitten us, so there will definitely be more to come. We are just deciding which one will be next!
Book as early as possible so you can get accommodation on Yas Island, as that’s where you will spend most of your time. They have a phenomenal free shuttle service around the track, to and from Yas Mall, and the theme parks.
our Oceans store, shop your liquor favourites and earn Sip Coins on every purchase. You can find us in Oceans Mall, 7 Lagoon Drive. Don’t forget, you can get your order delivered to your door. Cheers to your new go-to liquor store!
9th Avenue Waterside
BEYOND THE ART OF DINING
Where Corporate Excellence Meets Timeless Elegance
Perched at the iconic Durban Yacht Mole, 9th Avenue Waterside is more than just a restaurant— it’s the destination for corporate events that seek distinction and excellence.
Our reputation for excellence extends beyond the breathtaking setting. Every event is meticulously crafted with precision, ensuring that no detail is overlooked. The result is a perfect harmony of world class service and refined elegance that leaves a lasting impression on your guests.
A celebration of fine wine, beautifully plated dishes, and a setting where conversation flows as smoothly as the harbour breeze. This is where Durban’s culinary landscape is redefined.
Known for beautiful cakes, freshly baked goods, and local products, Home Baked is a beloved store by the Durban North community. Open since 2015 and purchased in 2019 by Bron Matthews, she had always loved the store and saw a way to help the community grow, “I saw Home Baked as an opportunity to help other small business owners and home bakers grow their businesses, and together we could all thrive,” she explains. Having lived in Durban North her whole life, and also starting her own family here, it was a natural move for her to be involved in the community. “I just can't imagine living anywhere else. Our community is good, kind, and resilient. We support and we lean on each other, we care. I love that,” she shares.
She had a five-year-plan to gradually execute all of the ideas she had, but when the coronavirus hit, five years had to be condensed into two weeks! “It took a lot of hard work, and long hours, but thanks to the amazing Durban North community, we now have 162 suppliers, with 140 of them being locals,” Bron remarks. Through riots and floods, the community has stood by their side, “That time was most memorable
for me of how our community stood together. I, in turn, gave back to our community by sourcing milk, bread, eggs and other staples, and sold them all at cost—my way to give back,” she recalls.
She has tried to maintain the homey feeling within the store while including contemporary elements with fresh artisanal breads (delivered daily!), deli items, handcrafted gifts and a frozen meat selection, but that’s not all, “We also do novelty and speciality cakes to order, which is lots of fun!” she exclaims.
Famous for Val’s carrot ring, Eat Greek dips and other deli items, they pride themselves on the quality of every product in the store. Made in small batches and home made, they embody supporting local businesses and being authentic.

Healing the Invisible Injury
WORDS ROBIN WILLIAMS
Concussions are often called "invisible injuries" because of their symptoms: headaches, dizziness, memory problems, and fatigue, which aren’t always apparent to the outside world. Yet, for those who experience them, the impact can be life-altering.
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by a blow to the head or body that disrupts normal brain function. While most people recover within weeks, some experience persistent symptoms, a condition known as post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Without proper treatment, these symptoms can interfere with daily life, work, school, and sports. This is where physiotherapy plays a critical role. By addressing the physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects of concussion recovery, physiotherapists help patients navigate the road to healing with confidence.
How Physiotherapy Helps in Concussion Management
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Physiotherapists use vestibular rehabilitation, a specialised form of therapy to retrain the brain and restore balance. Through targeted exercises, patients learn to manage dizziness and reduce the risk of falls, a crucial step in recovery.
Cervical Spine Therapy
Concussions are often accompanied by neck injuries, as the force of impact can strain
the cervical spine. Physiotherapists assess and treat neck pain through manual therapy, stretching, and strengthening exercises. By alleviating neck tension, patients often experience relief from headaches and improved overall function.
Gradual Return to Activity
Rest is important in the early stages of concussion recovery, but prolonged inactivity can delay healing. Physiotherapists design individualised exercise programmes to gradually reintroduce physical activity without exacerbating symptoms.
Visual and Oculomotor
Training
Physiotherapists use specialised exercises to improve eye coordination and tracking, helping patients regain normal visual function.
Cognitive Rehabilitation
Physiotherapists work closely with other healthcare professionals to incorporate cognitive rehabilitation into treatment plans. This may include exercises to improve attention, memory, and executive function.
Education
and Support
Physiotherapists provide education on symptom management, pacing
strategies, and safe return-to-play protocols. This empowers patients and their families to take an active role in recovery.
Special Considerations for Children
Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to concussions due to their developing brains and active lifestyles. Physiotherapy for pediatric patients focuses on age-appropriate interventions, including play-based exercises and family-centred care.
Each patient’s journey is unique, requiring a tailored approach that addresses their specific symptoms and goals. Physiotherapy offers a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for healing, helping patients of all ages regain their health and quality of life.
If you or a loved one is struggling with concussion symptoms, don’t wait to seek help. Early intervention with a licensed physiotherapist can make all the difference. This National Health Awareness Month, let’s prioritise brain health and celebrate the transformative power of physiotherapy in concussion care. Here’s to healing, hope, and a brighter future after injury.
