Anyone who knows me knows that I love consistency and have therefore frequented a certain hotel in Umhlanga often over the years and it’s my happy place! Queue Sala Beach House!
Wow wow wow!
A new local happy place, found! I can’t believe we had not been here before this! One night was certainly not enough and I can’t give them
enough praise for their above-andbeyond service. All the rooms from the villa offer wide views of the Indian Ocean. The self-contained villa itself covered all our needs for what we wanted for the night and way more.
From the moment we arrived, it was top-class service! We held a small intimate high tea for a couple of ladies and then six of us stayed over in the three bedroom villa for the night. The high tea got high praise
from everyone, the menu was great, the actual food exceeded our expectations!
Later that night, we ordered dinner in the villa, so that we could relax in our PJ’s and just enjoy an intimate meal together, everything was impeccable! When they say “Our chefs craft exquisite dishes using locally sourced ingredients for a truly unforgettable meal”, it's true!
The 7 a.m. free yoga class while enjoying the ocean view was a highlight for sure, it started the day just right and then onto a spectacular breakfast, with all the bells and whistles, served on our villa deck just ended off the stay perfectly.
Sala is private and intimate with spectacular food, service, views, and an in-house spa. It covers all your wants and needs and feels like you are not just in Ballito/Salt Rock, but like you are enjoying a tropical island holiday somewhere truly special. We loved all the special touches that made it even more perfect; the fresh milk in the fridges, the coffee stations in each room, and the high-quality comfy slippers. The en-suite bathrooms are nextlevel gorgeous too.
Lindiwe handled all our bookings and requests and Henk and the team handled all our food needs, they are guest-focused and it shows in every detail and in every sad farewell from guests leaving, but the overwhelming final words every time is “see you soon”. I totally get it! 100% we will be back!
Villa info: The self-contained three bedroom villa is an exclusive beachside home for groups of friends or families. Each of the double rooms has a beautiful en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and rain shower along with a veranda, air-conditioning, and mini-fridge. The main living area is a spacious open-plan design that features a dining and lounge area, a full kitchen, and a guest bathroom. There is also a sparkling private plunge pool and a large terrace from which to enjoy the views and sounds of the ocean.

One Team, One Table, One Spread
The sound of glasses clinking, people dishing up, and the warm vibration of laughter amidst multiple conversations are moments we cherish. Celebrations are a time to come together, share joy, and create lasting memories. When our magazine reached its 90th edition, we knew it was the perfect occasion to throw a get-together that truly reflected our journey.
With a little help from some fantastic local brands and services, we set up a table that was both spectacular and simple. Here's how we did it, and how you can too.
The foundation of any beautiful table setting is the tablecloth. For our milestone celebration, we turned to the Palmar Collection, known for their high-quality, 100% recycled cotton table linens.

PHoto KRISTEN REICHE PHOTOGRAPHY
Each piece is handmade locally with care and attention, making them a sustainable and stylish choice. We opted for their ivory 10-12 seater tablecloth, a versatile base that allowed us to build our theme with accessories.
Each place setting featured linen napkins from their Palm Range in moon grey and ivory. The 45cm x 45cm napkins were tied in simple knots, adding texture and elegance. These colours perfectly matched our brand's palette for the occasion, creating a cohesive and inviting look.
No table setting is complete without beautiful tableware.
We wanted pieces that would start conversations and add a unique flair to our celebration. Wonki Ware, a fabulous brand at The Pottery, provided us with vibrant and unique ceramic ware. Their collection includes plates, platter dishes, jugs, cutlery, and so much more that highlight every table and home they grace. Everyone loved the stunning designs, and the tableware became a highlight of the event. These could spark many "Oh wow, where did you get this dish from?" moments at your next get-together.
Not only did we have stunning tableware, but we also enjoyed the creative space that is The Pottery as a venue for our team to celebrate 90 editions. All around one table, surrounded by both Wonki Ware products and funky hand-painted ceramics done by customers - it was a perfect place to get the creative juices flowing and laugh over shared memories.
To make each team member feel special, we added a personalised touch with custom biscuits from Bites of Joy. Their printed corporate royal icing biscuits and photoprinted biscuits featuring our brand
and milestone magazine covers exceeded our expectations. These delightful treats not only added a sweet touch but also served as unique conversation starters. You can customise your event with personalised name cards as biscuits or create little thank you or welcome biscuits. The choices are endless, and they add a memorable and tasty element to any gathering.
As a team that loves good food, we know how daunting it can be to feed a large group. Fortunately, we have access to amazing local spots like Yoli’s and La Sandwicheria These venues offer a wide range of high-quality snacks, from sweet to savoury, perfect for any celebration. We treated the Fabteam to eats such as handcrafted artisanal sandwiches and decadent rose-piped cupcakes that were the talk of the event. These delicious snacks provided an early lunch surprise that kept everyone happy and satisfied.
To ensure we could relive our milestone celebration for years to come, we had the lovely Kristen Reiche Photography capture a few snapshots. Photos of the event help preserve the joy and camaraderie, serving as a reminder of our achievements and the wonderful people who helped us reach this point.

celebration doesn't have to be complicated. By collaborating with local brands and services, you can create a beautiful and memorable experience for your guests. With these tips and ideas, you can create a spectacular yet simple table setting for your next milestone celebration.
What initially inspired you to get into MMA, and how did your journey lead you to where you are today?
Initially, I started MMA as a form of fitness and had no intention of competing, but the sport has a beautiful way of capturing you. There is a lot more to it than most people think, not only do you have to be physical, but it stimulates your brain too. It truly is an art.
Can you share what being selected as a coach for South Africa means to you?
Being selected as a SA MMA coach has been my biggest achievement to date, and if I'm honest, it wasn't something I expected. Coaching for me is far more than leading athletes. I believe that when an athlete is in
my gym, they are not in my space, we share that space to learn and grow together. Winning titles was one of the greatest moments in my career, but that seemed to fall away the moment I stepped into a coaching role. Now it’s seeing my students achieve and grow no matter how big or small the accomplishment is. I don't have kids of my own, but I can imagine that proud feeling is something parents can relate to. I hope I can positively impact someone else, even if it's in a small way.
Can you share a success story of one of your students that particularly stands out to you? They’re all so different, but in particular,
PHoto Nicky coetzee

I have two brothers that compete under me; the De Beer duo. Josh has been sporty his whole life and seems to have a natural talent for physical sports, but unlike your average teenager, he has never relied on his natural talent. Luke (the younger brother) grew himself into the sport, unlocking his hidden talents. They both have achieved protea colours for MMA and kickboxing. Josh won gold in the African championships, and Luke, silver. Both are currently preparing for the world championships in Abu Dhabi. They have truly made me proud.
In a sport that is often maledominated, what has your experience been as a female coach? It was difficult to be acknowledged or have opportunities that male athletes had, but the sport has come a long way. I earned my position as a coach and have the experience to back it. My experiences in the past have made me stronger.
What qualities do you believe are essential for someone to succeed in MMA, both as an athlete and as a coach?
A sense of motivation and discipline, if an athlete can consistently apply themselves daily no matter what level they start at, they can be great. I do think having an almost obsessive personality is one quality that those who have achieved highly in MMA share. We obsess about our sport and give everything towards it. But with anything in life, if you have a goal in mind, you do everything it takes to achieve it.
How do you stay motivated and continue to push yourself to new heights in your career?
The upside of being a coach is that it naturally pushes you, you have athletes eager to learn from you, so you must make sure you constantly put in the work to have all the knowledge they will need from you. And, personally, watching my students enjoy the sport reignites the love I have for MMA. It almost feels like I get to fall in love with MMA all over again.
What are your goals for the future of Warriors Gym and your coaching career?
I really love the Warriors Gym space; we have a wide range of disciplines: kickboxing, BJJ, Kettlebells, rebound, boxing and strength training. I'd like the gym to be consistent and filled with members who share the passion for fitness, health, and martial arts. As a coach, I'd like to keep growing my team to about six pro fighters and be
by their side when they achieve a world title someday - nothing would make me happier.
Is there anything in your career that you still aspire to do?
Currently, I'm focusing on my role as a coach and putting everything into it. I am an athlete though, and that fire to compete is inside of me and I would like to do it again; it would be great for my team to see me showcase my skills and for them to train alongside me.

A Legacy of Success
A Family Restaurant Story
Al Pescatore has become a cherished destination for both locals and tourists. This enduring success is thanks to the dynamic father-daughter duo, Trevor and Nicole, who seamlessly blend nostalgia with contemporary flair to keep their beloved restaurant thriving.
Reflecting on the early days, Trevor fondly recalls a memorable Christmas lunch that encapsulated the spirit of Al Pescatore. “We had handmade crackers and menus, and our family would wake up early to get everything ready.
My wife, Jenny, would help prepare two days before, and her delicious stuffing is still a must now,” Trevor reminisces. This event was so special that people would book their attendance a year in advance, showcasing the profound connection between the restaurant and its patrons.
The restaurant, once a quaint 50-seat establishment situated on Ballito Boulevard, has grown significantly over the years. Trevor emphasises the importance of evolving while retaining the charm of the past. “Metamorphose-we always have to change. Customers
love to see the care taken in the maintenance and upkeep of the restaurant,” he explains. This passion-driven approach, coupled with the challenges of small business finances, has required patience and dedication. “Small business and small finance meant needing more patience with the slow progress.”
Trevor’s commitment to innovation is unwavering. “My love for food and the feedback I get fuel that spark,” he says. This drive to continually create new and unique food experiences is reinforced by their daily review of Google feedback.
Trevor’s aspiration is clear: to be remembered as one of the best restaurateurs.
The synergy between Trevor and Nicole is palpable, characterised by laughter, trust, and mutual respect. Nicole acknowledges her father's adaptability and openness. “My dad's willingness to change and his openness after the last 30-something years in the business with no influence has been amazing,” she shares. Their strong bond is evident in their seamless collaboration, often described as being "like father, like daughter" or "two peas in a pod."
The impact of customer feedback has been profound for both Trevor and Nicole. Regular patrons and newcomers alike have left lasting impressions with their heartfelt reviews. “Every staff member has a relationship with the guests, not a faceless service,” Trevor notes. These stories, whether from Google reviews or personal interactions, affirm the exceptional dining experiences Al Pescatore consistently delivers.
Stepping into a leadership role alongside her father has been both challenging and rewarding for Nicole. “I’m not there to fill his shoes but rather to put my own stamp on things and hope everyone loves my approach,” she says. Nicole’s mother, Jenny, plays a crucial
behind-the-scenes role, providing guidance and support. Nicole has made significant updates to the restaurant's interior, including new tables, chairs, menus, and branding. These changes, though small, have had a significant impact. “Customers have responded positively to these updates,” she observes. Raising her baby on the coast while contributing to the family business has been a blessing for Nicole. “My dad was never able to offer me much time as a kid and he has honoured me with the opportunity to spend time with my son,” she reflects. Her husband’s unwavering support as an incredible dad further facilitates this balance.
Nicole is enthusiastic about the future. “I am so excited. We have so many amazing plans for the next two-five years to continue this legacy. I wake up each morning amped to work,” she shares. Her commitment to carrying on the family legacy is profound, with aspirations for her son to eventually take the helm. “It means everything. And I pray locals and holidaymakers alike look at me like they do my dad,” she says with heartfelt sincerity.
Al Pescatore’s story is one of tradition, newness, and familial commitment. Trevor, Jenny and Nicole’s journey is a testament to their passion for food and community, ensuring that the restaurant’s legacy continues to flourish for generations to come.

From the moment you step into Jena Morgan Hair Studio, you're greeted with a modern and elegant aesthetic that uplifts your spirits instantly. The energy in the salon is delightful and invigorating, thus making it the perfect place for a hair transformation.
Lucille and I started our visit with personalised consultations. Jena herself explained to Lucille that they would begin with an Olaplex treatment to repair her hair and help the colour lift quicker, followed by foils, a healthy cut, and a blow-dry. Natasha, my stylist, understood exactly how I wanted to achieve cherry red without bleaching while keeping the warm undertone of my natural ginger hair.
Beforehand, Lucille and I were guided to the basins for a wash, emphasising the importance of working on a clean canvas. Afterwards, Natasha showed me the mix of semi-permanent colours she would apply. This approach would ensure the colour lifts and blends seamlessly into my natural hair as it grows out. With mimosas in our hands, and our hair in the stylists’ hands, the ladies got to work. It was fascinating to watch the colour transition from a conditioner-like shade to a vibrant cherry red as it oxidised on my hair.
Lucille was treated to a full pampering session, including fitting her blonde highlights and getting elegant French gel nails done by the wonderful Kay. As for me, I enjoyed a relaxing hand massage while my
hair soaked up the colour. To ensure my hair held onto the cherry red perfectly and achieved a gorgeous, model-like shine, Natasha treated me to a Kerastase treatment to restore moisture. I also experienced a new innovative treatment involving a warm steam mist followed by a short blast of cool air. This process, akin to a facial for the hair, left my hair with a stunning glow and shine.
My session concluded with a healthy trim, a blowout, and beautiful bouncy curls. Our afternoon at Jena Morgan Hair was nothing short of perfect, thanks to Jena and her talented team. The blend of expert techniques, luxurious treatments, and the salon's delightful atmosphere made it an unforgettable experience.
