Notes from theEditor It is a simple fact that regardless of what you design and how that design is built, your solution has many influences and inter-mixes different technologies. In the architectural world of corporate spaces, exhibits, museums and retail space, we as designers must utilize many textures, both rigid and soft, to complete our vision. That is why we call this BLEND. It is the synthesis of balancing traditional methodologies and fabric-based architecture to achieve a cohesive design solution.

With that said, let us present an alternative approach in mindset and thought. Knowledge is power and growth is a fundamental drive for what we do and how we get there. BLEND is the springboard for bridging the gaps or hiccups in that growth.

The goal of BLEND is to inspire you to think about the possible options that you might not recognize. We hope to excite you about the strength and beauty in the world we call “fabric architecture”. How can we make your life easier and richer? BLEND is about design and is here to educate and keep you inspired. È un fatto evidente: indipendentemente dal tipo di design e dalla sua composizione, una soluzione è sempre una fusione di diverse influenze e tecnologie. Nell’universo architettonico degli spazi aziendali, delle esposizioni, dei musei e degli spazi commerciali, gli architetti realizzano la propria visione utilizzando materiali di diversa consistenza, sia rigida che morbida. Ecco perché abbiamo scelto il nome BLEND. Questo nome (letteralmente, miscela) è la sintesi dell’equilibrio fra metodologie tradizionali e architettura tessile, mirata alla realizzazione di soluzioni di design caratterizzate da una forte coerenza.

Premesso ciò, BLEND rappresenta anche un approccio mentale alternativo. La conoscenza è potere, e lo sviluppo è uno stimolo essenziale nella nostra attività e nella traduzione concreta delle nostre idee. Blend è il ponte ideale che colma le distanze all’interno del processo di sviluppo.

L’obiettivo di BLEND è quello di ispirare il lettore, invitandolo a prendere in considerazione opzioni inedite, uniche. La nostra speranza è che la bellezza e le potenzialità di quel mondo conosciuto come “architettura tessile” suscitino il vostro entusiasmo. La vostra vita può essere più semplice e ricca di stimoli: l’obiettivo di BLEND è offrire continui aggiornamenti e spunti di design in tal senso.

The Burnham Pavilion was a celebration of possibilities and a highlight of a vision for a city of change with a commitment to a more livable environment.

In short, it was about a dream that could be realized and brought to life. On July 4th of 1909, Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett presented a gift to the city of Chicago. This, the Burnham Plan, was widely recognized as one of the premiere documents of city planning. It laid the groundwork for the protection of the pristine lakeshore of Lake Michigan and created the foundation for the growth of the city. The Burnham Pavilion paid homage to that vision. This article chronicles the life that was brought to the Zaha Hadid contribution of the Burnham Pavilion.

Every day we experience many phases of design. One of the key ingredients that satisfies design is fabrication. Manufacturing a concept can only happen when the right mixture of understanding and ability are added together to create a solution. Until then, concepts are only ideas waiting to be fulfilled.

The story begins like this… The Zaha Hadid design was a formation of the Burnham concept as interpreted by Hadid. The challenge was to bring it to life. Fabricating the design was the Mt. Everest of fabrications for FI. Articulating the concept took on many directions with a single focus - finish the pavilion by August 1st. One of the major aspects of securing this project was the importance of maintaining the idea while constructing the exhibit. Manufacturing such ideas takes experience, passion and know-how; only then does an idea or design become reality. This is what endeared the Hadid Architects to Fabric Images. We understood the vision, grasped the concept and had the knowledge to fabricate it

Il design si manifesta in moltissimi modi nella nostra vita quotidiana. Una delle componenti fondamentali del design è la realizzazione. La concretizzazione di un concetto può avvenire soltanto con il giusto mix di comprensione e competenze, finalizzato all’elaborazione di una soluzione. In mancanza di questi elementi, i concetti restano semplicemente idee in attesa di essere realizzate.

Questo è l’inizio della storia… Il progetto di Zaha Hadid non è altro che una rivisitazione del concept del Burnham Plan. Dare vita al progetto è stata la vera sfida. La realizzazione di questo design è stata una pietra miliare dell’attività di FI. L’articolazione concreta del concetto si è sviluppata in più direzioni, unite da un denominatore comune, ed è stata completata il 1 agosto. Uno degli aspetti più importanti che ha dato solidità al progetto è stata la costante coerenza all’idea in fase di costruzione dell’installazione. La realizzazione di idee come questa richiede esperienza, passione e know-how; solo con questi ingredienti è possibile tradurre un’idea in realtà. Ecco perchè gli architetti del team di Zaha Hadid si sono affidati a Fabric Images. Alla luce di una profonda comprensione della visione e del concept, abbiamo sfruttato in maniera adeguata le competenze in nostro possesso per realizzarli.

Creating an experience from something that has already been started and making it your own is a challenge. Creating something from nothing and doing it 5x faster than it should realistically take is next to impossible. The Fabric Images team realized the daunting task after their first day of fabrication, but true to FI nature, they responded in full blown crisis mode and were ready to rescue the exhibit.

FI’s knowledge and experience would have taken them down a different path. Nevertheless, they had to make lemonade out of bad lemons. They needed to make this work; not to mention, there were many extraneous factors to consider such as lighting, projection, photography, music, sound and the synchronization of all of these in order to meet the time frame. Everything was being called into question. Even zipper details were being modified in order to create the Hadid design. Once they took over the project, FI found that adjustments were needed daily. Everyday brought new obstacles to conquer and details to address.

Looking back, 30 days was a really short period of time. Understanding, focus and teamwork were the benchmarks that streamline the time which allowed them to finish in less than 30 days.

Realizzare un’esperienza a partire da un’idea già elaborata rendendola propria è difficile. Realizzare qualcosa dal nulla 5 volte più rapidamente rispetto alle aspettative reali è praticamente impossibile.

Il team di Fabric Images ha realizzato la difficoltà del proprio compito dopo il primo giorno di lavoro; tuttavia, la risposta è stata rapida ed efficiente e ha consentito la creazione dell’installazione in tempi brevissimi, in perfetto stile FI. Le competenze e l’esperienza di FI avrebbero suggerito un percorso diverso; inoltre, le condizioni di partenza non sono state certo le migliori. Oltre alla necessità di realizzare il progetto, è stato doveroso prendere in considerazione diversi fattori esterni, fra cui illuminazione, proiezione, fotografia, musica, suoni e la sincronizzazione di tutti questi elementi nelle tempistiche stabilite. Ogni aspetto è stato messo in discussione. Per la realizzazione del progetto di Zaha Hadid, è stato necessario addirittura modificare i dettagli delle chiusure lampo. In seguito alla presa in carico del progetto, FI ha notato la necessità di apportare modifiche continue: giorno dopo giorno, sono emersi ostacoli da superare e dettagli da rielaborare.

Considerato tutto questo, 30 giorni sono stati un periodo di tempo davvero breve. La comprensione, la concentrazione e il lavoro di squadra sono stati essenziali per l’ottimizzazione delle tempistiche, che ha consentito di realizzare il progetto in meno di 30 giorni.

THE CONSIDERATIONS. First part of the journey to complete the Zaha vision...

In the words of Fabric Images Consideration 1: The high profile nature of this project puts the whole project and those working on it under the microscope. Our reputation is at stake. The existing structure is on site at Millennium Park covered in a large tent with windows that allow the public to watch as we work. There will be distractions and viewings from concerned parties. Be aware of your surroundings but don’t lose focus!

Considerazione 1: dato l’elevato profilo del progetto, il progetto stesso e coloro che lavorano alla sua realizzazione sono costantemente sotto esame. È in gioco la nostra reputazione. La struttura esistente si trova al Millennium Park, coperta da una grande tenda dotata di finestre che consentono al pubblico di osservare l’avanzamento dei lavori. Riceveremo visite dalle parti interessate e non mancheranno le distrazioni. Essere consapevoli dell’ambiente circostante senza perdere la concentrazione è essenziale!

Consideration 2: This project will be done on-site. Normally, our work is done at our 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Elgin, IL with all of our materials and resources close at hand.

Organization will be absolutely critical. This will be a team effort and each person is required to take responsibility for their area of expertise. We will need to move equipment and materials on-site.

Considerazione 2: questo progetto verrà realizzato sul posto. Normalmente, svolgiamo il nostro lavoro presso la nostra sede di produzione di 9.290 metri quadrati a Elgin, Illinois, con tutti i nostri materiali e le nostre risorse a portata di mano. Consideration 3: With such a tight timeline and the multitude of unknown variables at this point, the on-site staff will work 10 – 12 hour days . On-site staff would start with 4 Sewing people and 4 Metal working people plus supervisors and at least one Project Manager filtering in and out of the mix. The thought is… to front load this project with labor resources to get ahead of the timeline.

Considerazione 3: le tempistiche ridotte e la moltitudine di variabili e incognite impongono allo staff sul posto giornate lavorative di 10-12 ore. Il personale sul posto sarà inizialmente composto da 4 persone addette alla cucitura, 4 persone addette alla lavorazione dei metalli e almeno un project manager, responsabile del coordinamento delle operazioni. L’obiettivo è quello di affrontare il progetto con più risorse di manodopera per rispettare le scadenze.

Consideration 4: We are working with an unknown existing structure, not our own. It will be necessary to evaluate the entire framework structure that currently exists and determine needs and repairs required – (much of this will be in coordination with the city’s engineer Chris Rockey.) “This project will not be about the way WE do it. Zaha Hadid’s trademark of organic style lends itself to the medium of tensioned fabric architecture.

Her Burnham interpretation gives fever excitement for Chicago’s sidewalk art critics converging to ponder the structure, offer their opinions- good and bad- and, of course, figure out a nickname.

In the latest Blair Kamin Trib article an interesting wrinkle has developed. We are drawn to things that we perceive as incredible, impossible or different.

The surprise was how the audience of Millennium Park chose to experience this design. The pavilion was designed as an interactive environment from the very beginning, so it’s not surprising that people are compelled to touch the fabric skin. It is an interesting dynamic to witness people touching the exhibit. Some uncontrollable force of nature to feel what they see draws them. Is it the fabric skin?

Is it the soft flowing lines that beg for attention?

Whatever the reason, the bottom line is people can‘t help but touch it.

Lo stile organico inconfondibile di Zaha Hadid si presta perfettamente all’architettura delle tensostrutture in tessuto. La sua interpretazione del piano di Burnham entusiasma i critici d’arte a passeggio per Chicago, che si accalcano per esaminarne la struttura, esprimere il proprio giudizio, positivo o negativo, e, naturalmente, darle un soprannome.

There are two imperatives for designers of the experience world. The first imperative is to consider the role of emotions in the customer’s or target audience’s decision-making process. The second imperative is to design everything in ways that create and sustain, at every touch-point, memorable experiences that are consistent with the brand mission, vision, and position. Success responding to these two imperatives can be measured by improvements in operating results and brand value, but also by increases in levels of customer happiness—satisfaction and retention.

So how do you express yourself? In my design world I use textiles to dictate the memorable, the unorthodox, the unimaginable. Every fabric offers a different and new way of looking at a brand’s identity.

You pick the brand and I bet I can find a textile that articulates its position in the marketplace or specify a material that will be sure to delight the customer. Whether it is a visual or tactile sensation, fabric is a economical way of extending a brand’s expression.

Gli imperativi per i designer del mondo sensoriale sono due. Il primo imperativo consiste nel considerare il ruolo delle emozioni nell’ambito del processo decisionale del cliente o del pubblico di destinazione. Il tessuto è una soluzione economica che consente di espandere la gamma espressiva di un marchio, attraverso sensazioni sia visive che tattili.

The aspect of interactivity in today’s design community is not a new phenomenon, but what is new in consumer experiences is the impact that the 5 senses play in evoking a response or connection to a product or Brand personality. The world of brand experience has long employed tactics to stimulate the general public visually. It has been our primary form of delivery since the dawn of advertising. What has changed over the years is the savvy behavior of the public. They are much smarter, faster, and methodical in the decisions on everyday products and the brands that support them. Creating an emotional, lasting connection is the holy grail of Brand loyalty. Brand marketers are employing over the top measures to dress their brands, and stay in the heart and mind of the consumer.

Science would suggested that keeping the approach simple and honest using one of the most primal of senses, touch, can help ensure a healthy brand relationship with the consumer. One of the vehicles that can deliver this connection is the use of textiles and materials because of the strong, memorable connection that can be sustained through interaction.

Touch is one of the most interesting yet underestimated powers of perception the human body has to communicate with. For years studies have been conducted on this front in the hope of substituting artificial stimuli in place of real human interaction, however the convergence of technology and advancements in mechanics, electronics and informatics have not scratched the surface of a substitute for the power of human touch.

Testing on the measurement of perceptions has been going on since the later half of the 19th century. With much discovered and analyzed, scientists have been crafting standards for the development of a vocabulary for profiling textiles and opening the door on how humans articulate interaction through physical contact.

L’interattività nel settore del design odierno non è un nuovo fenomeno; la novità, in termini di esperienza del consumatore, è rappresentata dalla capacità dei 5 sensi di suscitare reazioni o evocare associazioni relative alla personalità di un prodotto o di un marchio. Il settore dell’esperienza di marca si avvale da tempo di tattiche di comunicazione visiva. La comunicazione visiva è stata primo strumento utilizzato nel settore pubblicitario. Ciò che ha subito un’evoluzione nel corso degli anni è il livello di comprensione del pubblico.

Esso si dimostra infatti più acuto, rapido e metodico nello scegliere i prodotti che acquista quotidianamente e i propri marchi di fiducia. La creazione di un legame emozionale duraturo è il Sacro Graal della fidelizzazione. Le agenzie che curano la commercializzazione di un marchio adottano tattiche particolarmente sofisticate per costruire un’immagine attorno a un marchio, con l’obiettivo di conquistare i cuori e le menti dei consumatori. La scienza suggerirebbe di mantenere un approccio semplice e diretto, basato su uno dei sensi più primordiali, il tatto, per garantire un rapporto essenziale fra marchio e consumatore. Fra i veicoli in grado di stabilire un simile rapporto, l’uso dei tessuti e dei materiali consente di stabilire una connessione solida, memorabile, sostenibile attraverso l’interazione.

Fra le capacità percettive del corpo umano, il tatto è una delle più interessanti e sottovalutate forme di comunicazione. Per anni, diversi studi si sono concentrati su questo fronte, nella speranza di sostituire le interazioni reali con stimoli artificiali. In ogni caso, la convergenza di tecnologia e progresso nei settori della meccanica, dell’elettronica e dell’informatica non hanno consentito di avvicinarsi neanche lontanamente a un potere simile a quello del tatto umano. L’inizio del XIX secolo ha visto i primi esperimenti mirati all’analisi e alla misurazione delle percezioni. Diversi fattori sono stati scoperti e analizzati, e gli scienziati hanno elaborato standard per la creazione di un “vocabolario” di classificazione dei tessuti, rivelando il modo in cui l’essere umano articola le proprie interazioni attraverso il contatto fisico.

The most common front that this interaction takes place is in the retail world, especially the world of clothing and the design of apparel. The most important considerations in apparel products that affects a consumer’s decision-making process to purchase is the tactile property of the item. One can draw the conclusion that the consumer must engage the product to confirm what the visual sense is telling the brain.

People can’t help themselves when shopping, they have to touch the product as part of the overall experience. So if touch influences purchasing it is safe to suggest that textile choice plays a huge influential role in buying. It can be witnessed in a variety of industries that today’s brands are trying to be hyper-sensitive to all aspect of the 5 senses as they relate to consumer contact. Textiles offer the most basic of interactive components that brands can harness to create a memorable experience. No one is going to touch a wall of lights or rows of plasma televisions because the visual que tells them what they see is soft or rough, sharp or smooth, pleasurable or painful. Psychology studies have shown this is the way the brain is wired.

Tale affermazione trova riscontro all’interno di numerosi settori industriali, tanto che i marchi odierni dimostrano di essere alquanto sensibili ad ogni aspetto dei 5 sensi in termini di percezione da parte del consumatore. I tessuti appartengono alla gamma dei componenti interattivi fondamentali, che offrono ai marchi la possibilità di creare sensazioni che si imprimono nella memoria. Una parete di luci o una fila di televisori al plasma non attirano il tocco: basta osservare un oggetto per capire se è morbido o rigido, aguzzo o liscio, confortevole o scomodo. Studi psicologici hanno dimostrato che il cervello funziona proprio in questo modo.

The NY Times reported that studies have emerged suggesting that for “all its antiquity and constancy, touch is not passive or primitive or stuck in its ways. It is our most active sense, our means of seizing the world and experiencing it, quite literally, first hand. Susan J. Lederman, a professor of psychology at Queen’s University in Canada, pointed out that while we can perceive something visually or acoustically from a distance and without really trying, if we want to learn about something tactilely, we must make a move.” We must rub the fabric, pet the cat, squeeze the Charmin. With every touchy foray, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle looms large. “Contact is a two-way street, and that’s not true for vision or audition,” Dr. Lederman said. “If you have a soft object and you squeeze it, you change its shape. The physical world reacts back.” 2

“This study is an essential step towards the understanding of relationships between a surface’s physical properties and consumer’s affective responses. This work aligns with industrial needs to be able to manufacture surfaces that would have desired affective impact on consumers.” 3

Most of what we are talking about is related to product development and the interaction or reaction to materials as they relate to determining an appropriate solution for a design. It is easy to see that exhibits or environments themselves are product showcases or experiences for a product to be interacted with. Most brands are promoting some sort of offering and they require solutions that can articulate the added-value propositions in order to stand outside the competition. In August 2009 a study took place in order to determine the relationship between touch perception physical properties. The research conducted by the team of Xiaojuan Chen, Fei Shao, Cathy Barnes, Tom Childs, and Brian Henson reported on the study of materials for consumer packaging. Exploring the connections between the sense of touch and the material’s physical attributes was determined by a study group testing thirty-seven varying tactile textures. The results showed that touch is often interpretive and is associated with more than one physical attribute.

Molto di ciò che stiamo affermando riguarda lo sviluppo di un prodotto e l’interazione, o la reazione, ai materiali, nonché il loro ruolo nell’indivuduare una soluzione di design ideale. È evidente che le installazioni o gli ambienti stessi sono esposizioni di prodotti o esperienze che invitano all’interazione.

La maggior parte dei marchi promuove un’offerta e necessita di soluzioni in grado di articolare una proposta a valore aggiunto, in modo da distinguersi dalla concorrenza. “The method used in this research is taken from affective engineering. Affective engineering is concerned with measuring people’s affective responses to products, identifying the properties of the products to which they are responding, and then using the information to design better products. It is a Westernized approach to kansei engineering which has been pioneered by Nagamachi (1995) in Japan since the 1970s. Kansei is a Japanese term for consumers’ psychological impressions and feelings about a product.” The most interesting aspect of designing with textiles or using them as part of the overall communication vehicle can be summed up into a very simple discussion. Materials have personalities that people react to. Consumers create emotional and memorable attachments to the things that they encounter and touch. For this reason fabric architecture is a prime solution for brands to extend their connections to their target audience. Touch is the most basic of the senses and one that is taken for granted everyday because it is utilized so often. Brands can touch their audience by using touch. It was proven in this study that individuals will vary in degrees and opinions on the adjectives used to describe a product or in the case of environments, the experience. But what is not in dispute is the fact that textiles and their physical properties created an emotional attachment or link to a brand and its product offering.

L’aspetto più interessante del design che utilizza i tessuti o si avvale di essi come parte di una strategia di comunicazione può essere riassunto in maniera piuttosto semplice. Ogni materiale ha una personalità che provoca determinate reazioni nelle persone. I consumatori instaurano legami emotivi e fondati sul ricordo con gli oggetti che incontrano e toccano. Per questo motivo, l’architettura tessile offre una soluzione ottimale che consente un’espansione della gamma di connessioni fra marchio e pubblico di destinazione. Il tatto è il più elementare dei sensi, dato per scontato nella nostra quotidianità proprio perchè utilizzato molto frequentemente. Un marchio può sfruttare il tatto per arrivare a “toccare” il proprio pubblico. Questo studio ha dimostrato, mediante l’analisi degli aggettivi utilizzati per descrivere un prodotto o, nel caso degli ambienti, la propria esperienza, che i singoli individui instaurano rapporti di natura e intensità differente in termini di tatto. L’aspetto comune e indiscutibile è dato dal fatto che i tessuti, grazie alle loro caratteristiche fisiche, possono creare una relazione emotiva fra cliente e marchio o fidelizzare il cliente ad un marchio e alla relativa linea di prodotti.

Marieke de Mooij of the Netherlands writes, “We do not have one adequate global language by which we can reach global consumers” (Sage, 2005). Because formal languages are culturally derived, the growth of global brands would seem to be inherently limited by the absence of any common global language. However, given the ability of the core senses- touch, taste, and scent- to establish bonds between consumers and brands at the sub-cultural level, could one of them- perhaps touch-- potentially serve as the lingua franca of global branding?

So as Marieke suggests, can the same idea be translated to the tradeshow floor. The total sensory experience means creating an environment filled with stimuli that excites and delights or calms and soothes the human experience in a 3D space. Can a touch BECOME a lasting impression and a memory that becomes imbedded in the heart and mind of the individual within the experience? Remember no one remembers a tradeshow booth; they remember the experience.

What if there were fabrics that supported this ideology?

The idea is highly intriguing. A social anthropologist Ashley Montagu viewed touch as a language of its own- one that is learned well before writing and speech. With its extremely large vocabulary, Montagu argued that touch is capable of conveying what cannot be transmitted through more formal language, because the language of touch is completely natural, and without any artifice.

Come suggerisce Marieke, la stessa idea può essere applicata al settore delle fiere. Offire un’esperienza sensoriale completa significa creare un ambiente ricco di stimoli, in grado di emozionare, regalare sensazioni piacevoli o rilassanti, all’interno di uno spazio tridimensionale. Il tatto può TRASFORMARSI in un’impressione durevole e in un ricordo indelebile nel cuore e nella mente dell’individuo a livello empirico? Nessuno ricorda l’aspetto di uno stand visitato in una fiera, ma chiunque ricorda la propria esperienza al suo interno. I tessuti sono in grado di sostenere questa filosofia?

L’idea è sicuramente interessante. Ashley Montagu, antropologo sociale, considerava il tatto come un linguaggio a sé, appreso molto prima della comunicazione scritta e parlata. Secondo Montagu, grazie al suo ampio vocabolario, il tatto è in grado di esprimere ciò che non può essere trasmesso con linguaggi più formali: infatti, il linguaggio del tatto è completamente naturale, privo di artifici.

So if we suggest that touch is a language, what are you saying to the masses in your solutions? Or better yet, can you even speak the language?

It is fascinating to look around or read how designers are influencing the decisions of the consumer by making touch a relative part of the overall experience. There is a serious sense behind this interesting world of touch points. Touching the individual matters. Isn’t that the goal of any experience - reaching out and making a connection.

If so many industries want to make a connection with their end-user, why are they reducing the ability to touch or “feel” the product or offering? Don’t believe me, consider this. The auto industry does it. While they add enhancements of leather seats or beautifully designed instruments and buttons they take away part of the whole experience of driving, for example, power steering, state-of-the-art suspension, tires that compensate for changing road conditions or the worst enhancement - governing devices for engine performance. While some of their enhancements improve safety and performance, do you suppose they take the “feel” out of driving by putting it on the shoulders of an on-board computer chip.

So I ask you, are you in touch or do you think you are?

Quindi, considerando il tatto come un linguaggio, vi siete chiesti qual è il messaggio che le vostre soluzioni comunicano alle masse? Non è quindi chiaro il motivo per cui le possibilità di toccare o “sentire” il prodotto o la soluzione offerti sono sempre più limitate. Al di là delle parole, sono i fatti a dimostrare quest’affermazione: ne è un esempio l’industria automobilistica. Sedili in pelle sempre più raffinati e confortevoli e strumenti e pulsanti progettati in maniera impeccabile corrispondono a una minore attenzione all’esperienza della guida: ne sono un esempio l’introduzione del servosterzo, sospensioni all’avanguardia, pneumatici che si adattano alle diverse condizioni della strada o, per arrivare all’esempio più eclatante, i dispositivi di controllo per l’ottimizzazione delle prestazioni dei motori. Alcune di queste funzionalità aumentano la sicurezza e migliorano le prestazioni del veicolo; tuttavia, probabilmente altre “impoveriscono” l’esperienza della guida, affidandola al controllo di un chip integrato.

Think Differently Textiles are one of the few design tools that present the luxury of innovative exploration for those in the world of branded experiences. Whether you are in retail, architecture, branding, fixturing or P.O.P the options available are as infinite as the imagination. Over the years textiles have emerged from minimal, generalized applications to sophisticated experiential delivery mechanisms.

A fabric product spotlight

In the summer of 2009 Fabric Images, Inc. was asked to develop a concept that would serve as a studio design class at Pratt Institute. Headed by President/CEO Marco Alvarez, and his senior management that included Executive Vice President, Gordon Hill, Director of Research and Design, Leo Boczar and New York-based regional marketing associate, Sam Lugiano outlined a design concept that would focus on temporary, mobile fabric architecture that could be used for shelter during a disaster, mobile transitional communities or venues or serve as a temporary retail environments.

The goal of the studio was to design and deliver market-ready solutions that could be immediately manufactured and deployed. An additional criterion of the studio was all product ideas would need to be textile-based as part of the construction methodology.

Sponsored by Fabric Images, Inc. the studio called T.E.N.T. (TENSILE EPHEMERAL NOMADIC TERRAIN) was organized under the direction of Adjunct Assistant Professor Mark Parsons and Visiting Assistant Professor Dragana Zoric.

The task of the studio was to design an artificial fabric shelter, one in a system of many. It would a multi-surfaced solution that would alternate between the two- and the three-dimensional. In its requirements, the design could open and close, gather and disperse hydration, collect and shade, reduce and enlarge, addressing the overall concept behind the design-problem the executives at FI wanted the students of Pratt to solve.

One of the Pratt groups developed a fabric-based Cabana/Garden idea. This program looked at an enclosure solution that could be deployed in urban environments. The students or as they called themselves The Veggie Bandits included Michael Dolatowski, Isobel Herbold, Katherine Kania, and Dave Irwin. The group took an innovative look at the relationship between social and spatial features of urban life. They discovered a playful, organic urban-scape solution that could be both environmental and architectural as it related to the design mandate. A sliver of the overall solution was carved out of the fabric architectural garden. This solution was the Rhizome Chair. There is more to this story, stay tuned…

Lo studio, sponsorizzato da Fabric Images, Inc., si chiama T.E.N.T. (TENSILE EPHEMERAL NOMADIC TERRAIN, tensostruttora nomade effimera) ed è stato organizzato sotto la supervisione del professor Mark Parsons, Assistente aggiunto, e del professor Dragana Zoric, Assistente in visita. Dressing the brand The Chedraui Story...

A family-owned “hypermarket,� Chedraui breaks tradition with a signature exterior and a simple interior that focus on the product and clear communication.

The clean, modern design is friendly and welcoming, with an iconic exterior made up of aluminum panels with iridescent orange paint.

Inside, the terrazzo floor sparkles, fabric-printed images and a clear wayfinding system guide customers, and white gondolas with rick dark wood accents provide product visibility.

Hypermarkets are often looked down upon by shoppers who associate their huge inventories and low prices with an unpleasant shopping experience. In the world of branded experiences Hypermarkets are even more difficult creatures to love. Even their most loyal customers can feel guilty for shopping at a giant shed on the edge of town instead of patronising their small neighborhood stores. Yet they are lured back by the vast range of goods spanning both food and non-food items. In Mexico, on the other hand, which has few luxury supermarkets and a culturally ingrained expectation of value, hypermarkets are well accepted by every sector of the population.

The Mexican-owned Chedraui chain went looking to grab a bigger share of the consumer enchilada, it wanted an environment that would combine the message of value and abundance with a clean, organized shopping experience that wasn’t the typical messaging assault of bad visuals, harsh light and overcrowding. For this, the architectural firm Little (Charlotte, N.C.) was asked to develop a scenario that would change the current dynamic of hypermarkets.

They were given carte blanche - aside from the Chedraui logo and the color orange on the exterior - and the ambitious charge of creating a shining jewel among stones.

While most competitors have traditional illustrations and photography and wayfinding around the entire perimeter of the store, the Chedraui in Guadalajara is bright white and minimalist. A soft, simple color scheme in the signage indicates different product lines (gray for food, green for hard goods and blue for soft goods) and the few photos are large and without people. The store lighting is a combination of natural light and overhead fluorescents with just a few spots. Also, long runs of gondolas have been broken up by tabletop displays, creating a more spacious and approachable setting.

The store design, as reported by Tom Zeit for VMSD.com, “was an unexpected adaptation of the one Little created in 2007 when it won the job of designing what would have been Chedraui’s flagship store in Mexico City’s Santa Fe marketplace. While the Santa Fe site has been secured, Chedraui decided to test its prototype in a similar demographic area in Guadalajara.

Chedraui and Little will use this concept for future stores, and many of its elements will be rolled out to existing ones. “One of our biggest successes was that our design for Santa Fe proved to be a viable prototype,” says Little design director Todd Rowland, “because we were able to easily adapt it for another location. What was built is Guadalajara is pretty much a manifestation of our concept sketches.” And now, waiting for their original design to come to life in Mexico City, they can feel a lot more confident.”3

La catena messicana Chedraui ha cercato di rivolgersi a una fetta più ampia dell’enchilada di consumatori, offrendo un ambiente in grado di associare i concetti di valore ed abbondanza ad un’esperienza d’acquisto ordinata e organizzata, che non avesse a che fare con la tipica aggressività delle immagini di scarsa qualità, dell’illuminazione eccessivamente intensa e del sovraffollamento. La catena Chedraui ha commissionato allo studio di architettura Little (Charlotte, Carolina del Nord) lo sviluppo di uno scenario in grado di trasformare le attuali dinamiche legate agli ipermercati. Allo studio è stata data carta bianca, fatta eccezione per il logo Chedraui e il colore arancione degli esterni, e il compito ambizioso di creare un gioiello splendente, che spiccasse fra le pietre.

La maggior parte dei supermercati concorrenti è caratterizzata dalla presenza di illustrazioni, fotografie e indicazioni dei percorsi di tipo tradizionale lungo l’intero perimetro; al contrario, l’ipermercato Chedraui di Guadalajara ha un aspetto minimalista, dominato da una luminosa tonalità di bianco. Le diverse tipologie di prodotti sono indicate da colori tenui e semplici (grigio per i prodotti alimentari, verde per i beni durevoli e blu per i beni non durevoli); le poche fotografie utilizzate sono di grandi dimensioni e non ritraggono persone. L’illuminazione interna combina luce naturale e illuminazione a fluorescenza; la presenza di quest’ultima è tuttavia limitata. Inoltre, le lunghe file di scaffali sono state spezzate con l’inserimento di espositori da tavolo, che creano un ambiente più spazioso e accessibile.

Il design dell’ipermercato, come riportato da Tom Zeit su VMSD.com, “si è rivelato un inaspettato adattamento dello spazio commerciale creato da Little nel 2007, dopo essersi aggiudicato l’appalto per la progettazione del punto vendita Chedraui all’interno del mercato di Santa Fe, a Città del Messico. Una volta completato il punto vendita di Santa Fe, Chedraui ha deciso di testare il suo prototipo all’interno di un’area demografica simile, a Guadalajara.

Chedraui e Little utilizzeranno lo stesso concept per altri punti vendita, applicando alcune delle caratteristiche sviluppate ai punti vendita esistenti. “Uno dei nostri maggiori successi consiste nel fatto che il nostro progetto per Santa Fe si è rivelato un prototipo ripetibile”, afferma Todd Rowland, responsabile del design di Little, “in quanto è stato possibile adattarlo facilmente a un’altra sede. The grocery industry is one of the most rapidly evolving and complex sectors in all of retail. The industry has become steadily more design-driven over the past 30 years. Food retailers morphed from distributors of other brands to brand owners themselves, while simultaneously and continually adjusting to consumer fads and trends in merchandising, food and cooking - all within the context of complicated and expensive retail facilities. Printed fabric architecture is one of a few evolving technologies that allow retailers to offer an everchanging palette for dressing these brand environments. Environmental design experts, like Little Architects, know that developing solutions that are both strategic and tactical is a critical point to ensuring a well received brand environment. Fabric architecture was the answer to this critical point and the Chedraui experience.

L’industria alimentare rappresenta uno dei settori più complessi e in evoluzione più rapida all’interno del mercato al dettaglio. Il settore ha sviluppato una crescente attenzione al design negli ultimi 30 anni. I dettaglianti alimentari si sono evoluti da distributori di altri marchi a proprietari di marchi, adattandosi continuamente e simultaneamente alle mode e alle tendenze dei consumatori in termini commerciali, alimentari e culinari, il tutto nel contesto di strutture al dettaglio complesse e costose. One of the memorable traits that made Leonardo DaVinci a lasting success and benchmark of innovation was his ability to communicate using language of the hand sketch. Just like Da Vinci, the Fabric Images team spoke the visual language of drawing with the team from the city of Chicago and Zaha Hadid. This process allowed the Hadid architects and our team to understand the challenges of construction and develop solutions to solve the issues that plagued the construction of the Hadid vision for the Burnham Pavilion. The tool was a #2 pencil. Creating innovation for solving the design’s fabrication issues started with the imagination of one team with one focus.

Uno dei tratti che hanno reso le opere di Leonardo Da Vinci successi duraturi e pietre miliari dell’innovazione è stata la capacità di comunicare utilizzando il linguaggio dello schizzo a mano. L’innovazione finalizzata alla risoluzione di problemi legati alla realizzazione di un design ha avuto inizio grazie all’immaginazione di un team, composto da persone accomunate dal medesimo scopo

That imagination led to the visual communication of an idea through a pencil and paper. In an age where the computer is such an overused tool the process of understanding and capturing the Zaha vision was captured with the most basic of design instruments. Let’s face it; drawing ideas is a pathway to innovation. I would go so far as to say that without the ability to communicate in this language of drawing we would have been doomed to complete the task placed on us by the City of Chicago. Remember, this design is evolutionary, not revolutionary. Some ideas are just damn good ideas. The good ideas are captured on paper as with this project.

L’immaginazione ha portato alla comunicazione visiva di un’idea attraverso l’uso di carta e matita. In un’epoca in cui il computer è uno strumento così inflazionato, il processo di comprensione e di realizzazione della visione di Zaha è stato caratterizzato dall’uso dei più elementari strumenti di design. È un fatto evidente: il design di idee è un percorso di innovazione. Si potrebbe arrivare addirittura ad affermare che la capacità di comunicare attraverso il linguaggio del disegno è stata l’elemento chiave che ha reso possibile il completamento di questo progetto per la città di Chicago. È essenziale ricordare che il progetto è caratterizzato dal concetto di evoluzione, e non di rivoluzione. Alcune idee sono semplicemente geniali. E le idee geniali vanno fermate su carta, come è avvenuto per questo progetto.
