With the art and design worlds (or world, if you think they’re just two sides of the same planet) decentralizing all around us, moving — no, spreading — everywhere from China to South America to the World Wide Web, we search furiously for an au courant “capital,” the latest best place to go to see the finest and newest and most art and design. Short as we are of time and energy and attention span, we attempt to onestop shop our eternal hunt for the ne plus ultra in vision and talent and craft. »

LOS ANGELES IS INARGUABLY AND EMPHATICALLY AN INTERNATIONAL CAPITAL OF ART AND DESIGN. THIS IS INDEED LOS ANGELES' “MOMENT.” BUT IT TOOK SIXTY YEARS FOR THIS MOMENT TO ARRIVE, AND IT IS NOT GOING TO PROVE FLEETING. « But we simply can’t spend our off hours, or on hours, surfing endless Websites. Doing that, we’re looking at reproductions of reproductions, flat-screen renditions of objects and images that require air around them, that need to be well lit, encountered in their original size, touched and sat in. You can say that the Internet is the new hub for art and design, and it is. But if you say it’s the new capital for food as well, the proof is not in the pixel, but in the pudding. That makes Los Angeles, by more than default, an international art capital. The art capital of the world? The design capital? London calling. Hallo Berlin. Tokyo on my mind. Ciao Milano. Paris en retour. Oh yeah, New York. Our little upstart village, regarded only yesterday as the far-flung outpost of one charming (and lucrative) but suspect art form – one better suited to the invention of personalities than of masterpieces – needs to do a little more maturing before it can go up against these Bastions Of High Art, doesn’t it. You know the answer. Actually, it’s two answers: Yes But and No But. Yes, we need to do some more maturing. But there has been such a devolution of what might be considered artistic “maturity” in places like New York and London that the natural youth of the Los Angeles scene is now, for better or worse, considered its own form of wisdom. And as the oldest capitals are now among the youngest (look at 10

Beijing) and the youngest among the oldest (don’t forget, New York is barely more than a century older than L.A.), the concepts of “maturity” and “youth” have become infinitely complicated, or at least obscured. (Gertrude Stein said that “America is the oldest country in the world because it has been new the longest.”) No, Los Angeles does not need to do any more maturing; it’s been growing up, quickly and steadily, over the last half-century. It’s a real city now, not just a collection of metastasizing suburbs, and its moment has arrived. But what does Los Angeles really have to show for that maturation? It has culture, but does it have a culture of culture, a sense of artistic place that says to the world, “come here and see and acquire great things – great things that sit still while you look at and touch them?” Not like New York. Not like London. Not like Berlin. But we do, finally, have that culture of culture, our own form of it. We not only have enviable museums – more and more of them every year, it seems – but we have places to discuss what’s in them, in print, on line, and face to face. True, we’re more dependent on blogs than on cafes, but we now have both in abundance. And the intellectual foundation of Los Angeles art and culture remains the schools, our broad and brilliant archipelago of universities and art academies stretching from Big Sur to the border that have provided artists education, employment, and community ever since the invention of the GI Bill. It’s no coincidence that the end of World War II brought about the birth of the artand-design scene in southern California. Between the education and the industry, the boom and the bloom, Los Angeles and environs became the fastest growing corner of America in every sense of the word, art not least. Recent exhibitions and publications have documented that vitality, revealing how vast, how distinctive, and how influential it was. From the Eameses to John McLaughlin, from Ed Ruscha to Case Study Houses, from the Watts Renaissance to Los Four, from Finish/Fetish to Frank Gehry, from Art Center to the » FA B R I K

« Women’s Building, this neck of the woods has brimmed with unique and influential talent for as long as most of us have been alive. New York got the glory; San Francisco got the glamour; we got the goods. Which is to say, yes, Los Angeles is inarguably and emphatically an international capital of art and design. This is indeed Los Angeles’ “moment.” But it took sixty years for this moment to arrive, and it is not going to prove fleeting. Right now, with recession looming, such exuberance does not seem terribly rational. But with the worldwide appetite for art and design and, not coincidentally, all things LA unquenched (and with prices in dollars making the whole damned country the world’s thrift store), our short-term prognosis is almost as good as our long-term. Beyond the economic realities, however, Los Angeles has established itself – again, for better or worse – as not just an urban megalopolis, but a model urban megalopolis, the kind of place that Singapore and Sydney keep an eye on for hints and warnings, problems and solutions, cautionary models and breakthrough ideas. We have them all in abundance – not least in the art and design brimming all around you in this eternally fascinating, endlessly entertaining town.

BCAM AND BEYOND The official opening was nearly two months ago, but the big bang still resonates: the opening of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum as part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the closely related debut of LACMA's reinstallation of its own collection of 20th century art. Âť

« The official opening was nearly two months ago, but the big bang still resonates: the opening of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum as part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art – and the closely related debut of LACMA’s reinstallation of its own collection of 20th century art. BCAM, as the Broad is “officially” initialed, is big news because it’s big everything. The Renzo Piano box built to house the display of recent-vintage art is expansive and capacious; it feels like a converted warehouse – a European one, to be exact, a row of what resemble external hoists crenellating the edge of its roof. These jagged pointers are in fact the profiles of the skylights that fill BCAM’s top floor with natural light. All the building’s floors are airy with high ceilings, however, and its floor plan(s) lead the viewer on a simple stroll around a central core. It’s hard to get lost in the building (although several middle rooms on the second floor can get slightly disorienting, adding a certain frisson of adventure). Piano’s BCAM building continues the Wilshire wall LACMA erected when it inaugurated its Anderson Pavilion in 1986, but re-opens it with a somewhat long window that echoes the May Company façade at the Fairfax corner. (That Art Deco monument will be fully integrated into the LACMA campus as part of the development project’s stage two.) It’s the BP (British Petroleum) Plaza that truly punches a hole in this daunting barricade, by opening up the campus at street level and now serving as entrance to both BCAM and LACMA. Still, for its infelicities, Piano’s design serves the art, its visitors, and architecture well. More modest than other recent mega-buildings such as Frank Gehry’s Disney Hall and Cesar Pelli’s Pacific Design Center, Piano’s structure should be celebrated as much for its relative modesty as for its relative monumentality. The exhibition itself, of work chiefly but not entirely drawn from the Eli and Edyth Broad Foundation and the personal collection of the billionaire philanthropist and civic leader, reaches as far back as the 1950s and as far forward as – as, well, the several sculptures commissioned or acquired for strategic sites in and around Piano’s structure. The ground floor’s two immense rooms are each occupied by a Richard Serra “maze” sculpture (talk about getting lost); Barbara Kruger has festooned the central elevator shaft with an especially busy cascade of provocative phrases; and the grounds behind, beside, and before the building – not least in the BP Plaza – feature such immensities as Charles Ray’s gargantuan toy fire engine, a Jeff Koons balloon sculpture blown up to Oldenburgian scale, Robert Irwin’s species-sampling collection of potted palms, and the giddily improbable forest of old Los Angeles streetlights assembled by Chris Burden and kept ablaze (with new wattage-saving bulbs) all night. » 16

« These over-scale anti-monuments of course outsize anything inside BCAM, but more than a few items come close: the Broads have lent LACMA some pretty vast sculptures, and paintings, by the likes of Koons and Damien Hirst, and paintings and photomontages of similar size by no less than Andy Warhol and John Baldessari, for starters. But beyond the bigness, the BCAM debut is graced with boldness, brazenness, and beauty, to occasional excess but more often to the heights of the handsome. The selection champions several generations of cutting-edge heroes, from Cy Twombly to Cindy Sherman, and also featuring Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, Ellsworth Kelly and Ed Ruscha, political figurative painter Leon Golub and hallucinatory installationist Mike Kelley. But before you get lost in the funhouse, before recent art history takes over all your sense of time and space, you must escape BCAM, cross the BP Plaza, and enter what used to be the butt end of LACMA’s main cluster of buildings. The Ahmanson Pavilion, sitting there filled rather indiscriminately with treasures since 1965, now invites you to enter it through a sculpture that dwarfs even the Serra rings and the Koons balloons, the quasi-architectural masterpiece Smoke by Tony Smith, one of the great figures of 1960s Minimal art. Smoke ushers you into another whole dimension of modern art and thought: LACMA’s own collection of 20th century art, now reinstalled on Ahmanson’s ground floor. This display, as currently configured, serves two purposes: to show the museum’s near-encyclopedic holdings of modern art to maximum effect and to introduce and integrate the museum’s latest acquisition coup, the Janice and Henri Lazarof Collection. The Lazarofs are no Broads – Henri Lazarof is a well-known composer and professor emeritus in UCLA’s music department – but somehow they compiled a hoard of modern masterwork that could quite comfortably comprise its own museum. A dramatic cluster of Alberto Giacometti’s haunting sculptures is the centerpiece, but forceful late-period paintings by Picasso, sprightly geometric works by Fernand Léger and Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee’s little bursts of imagination, and similarly delicious and magical conjurations – many small, but none minor – by various of your modern-art gods comprise an assembly you can’t imagine hung only recently in a house in Westwood. This is where they logically belong, integrated into LACMA’s already impressive chronicle of the modern era. And, at long last, that chronicle gets its own gracious and exciting treatment. Once hung perfunctorily in the Anderson Pavilion’s upstairs reaches, LACMA’s moderns now bask in the »

« limelight, hung so that they interact and contrast with one another, their correspondence telling what happened, when and where. Two whole rooms toward the front are now devoted to dynamic selections – paintings to posters – from the Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionism. And in the back, in galleries as lucid and comfortable as any in BCAM, modernism marches on, from Matisse to Morris Louis, tracing the multiple strands of abstraction and imagination as they interwove through the first two thirds of the last century. If BCAM does a bang-up job of surveying the last four decades, LACMA now does a spectacular show of returning, or at least keeping, the heroes of our youth on their pedestals. Indeed, those old enough to remember the former pre-1980s Museum of Modern Art in New York – the one before even the last makeover, the one whose postwar configuration nurtured art-mad babyboomers the world over – will see and feel that temple of modernist perfection echoing through this display. Although there’s no Guernica to come sit down in front of in worshipful meditation, there is the same sense of an art-history book come to full, extravagant life, the words swept away by beautiful pictures and expanses of brushstrokes. If BCAM is eye-popping, LACMA’s modern wing is itself now eye-filling – and mind-nourishing. 20

ART WEARS Designer Trina Turk on Southern California Fashion and Design In the land known for Hollywood celebrity antics and where fashion trends are determined by what stars wear, native California designer Trina Turk emerges with a fresh approach to fashion and a nod to bygone eras. Ms. Turk is no high fashion hypocrite-her personal style epitomizes the relaxed yet glamorous style that Los Angeles put on the fashion map. Her love of the past, the desire for chic, yet comfortable clothing, and an artist’s flair for color and pattern are evident in her designs. “I mostly design for myself. Our customer is someone who is interested in fashion, but is not a fashion victim. A customer that wears our prints is definitely not a shy person or wall flower,” says Turk. Trina’s inspiration comes from modern design in architecture, sculpture, Japanese gardens, organic shapes and nature. Her home, personal style and ultimately, her designs, reflect the fervor she has for an aesthetic movement that transformed functional living into stylish living. » WORDS SANDRA MENDOZA-DALY 24

LA STYLE Los Angeles is known for its laid back attitude towards dressing. Jeans are as much high fashion as red carpet gowns. Turk believes the casualization of dressing is a trend that started in Southern California, and dates as far back as the 1930s when movie stars were photographed in their leisure wear and sport ensembles, relaxing at home in their backyards, beside kidney shaped pools, or enjoying the coveted L.A. weather at the beach. Headquartered in Alhambra, Trina Turk is proud to call herself a Californian designer. “I think Los Angeles is probably one of the most influential cities, style wise, in the world. Although New York is the fashion capital of the United States, you can argue that trends that really affect the way people dress have always come from California. The idea of mixing high and low, things that are for sport with dressier things, and vintage with new is really a Southern California idea. It’s an idea that has become important worldwide. I think the rest of the world sometimes doesn’t want to give Southern California credit, but the trends are coming from here. Even surf culture or casual Friday, which comes from Silicon Valley when the high tech [employees] couldn’t stand to wear a tie anymore. These are things that started in California,” explains Trina. Trina Turk’s Los Angeles boutique is a reflection of the eclectic style and casual chic look of Angelenos. Located on 3rd Street between Fairfax and Crescent Heights, the store’s interior is as much a showstopper as her designs. Luxurious details such as nude moiré walls, pink tile, plaster chandeliers, and glass door pulls mingle with modern glass spheres hanging from the ceiling like bubbles. The atmosphere harkens back to a time of salon shopping. And with such vintage appeal in décor, it makes perfect sense that the newest pieces in the Trina Turk collection are accompanied by vintage frocks, hand selected from Trina’s vintage archive, which are also for sale. »

DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE Trina’s growing interest in interior design and architecture rivals her love of fashion. “I find myself opening my interior design magazines before fashion magazines. That never used to happen.” As a child growing up in San Jose, Trina has fond memories of her mid century home which was inspired by the Eichler case study house featuring walls of glass, two sided fireplaces, and sunken living room. “There isn’t a huge difference in fashion design and interior design. It’s all color, texture, textile, and proportion. There’s definitely a lot of crossover there. That’s why I have had so much fun working on our retail stores. It’s been an outlet for working on interior design projects,” she explains. Turk is already spreading her wings into her second life in design with the April 2008 opening of her home décor and accessories boutique in Palm Springs, Trina Turk Residential. The store will offer a wide selection of pillows in traditionally vivid Turk patterns, soft goods, and pottery by designers Adam Silverman of Atwater Pottery’s and Josh Herman of Josh Herman Ceramics. The modern aesthetic of these talented designers will undoubtedly receive a warm welcome in the perpetual mid-century town of Palm Springs. Trina Turk and husband, partner, and textile director, Jonathan Skow are preparing for the Spring 2009 launch of her fabrics collection to be distributed by F. Schumacher & Co. Home Interiors. The collection will include fabrics that can be used indoors as well as outdoors. The fabrics will be water, sun and stain resistant. The idea came about when Trina and Jonathan were looking for fabrics for their outdoor-poolside sitting area. They decided to create a cotton blend fabric rather than canvas, in colors and patterns that appealed to the ultra cool couple. Like an elegant yet comfortable silk jersey dress, Trina has enveloped her body of work in swirls of creativity, passion, design and casual glamour that is quintessentially L.A.

SPRING COLLECTION Trina Turkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Spring 08 collection is a mid-century modern kaleidoscope of color and patterns. Inspired by the idea of outer space and sky, the collection includes silk jersey dresses and separates that explode with color and movement. Trina combines bold colors like yellow and black, pairing them with swirls and abstract shapes of cobalt, aqua and salmon. Undulating patterns mimicking the celestial waves of the Milky Way get a punch of pink, yellow, and aqua. The Big Bang print features abstract, organic color fields, in shades of blue and yellow. The Eclipse jacquard print short is paired with a double knit, pontĂŠ silk jacket-a perfect spring to summer cover up.

See twenty-six colorful and fascinating works of art created by the Patua of West Bengal, India—multimedia artists who paint narrative scrolls and then perform sung poetry while unrolling their scrolls to tell their stories to their audience. This traditional performance genre once drew its stories exclusively from the great Indian epics. In recent years, however, local non-governmental organizations have begun commissioning scrolls addressing health issues, including HIV/AIDS education. Artists Wendy Mason and Mindy Rose Schwartz explore their mutual interest in how objects and spaces hold the history of human interactions and the physical and ephemeral traces of their use. Using macramé as an intervention device, Schwartz unearths objects found within LACE and LACE’S archive, binding a hybrid of forms to the architecture. Mason shows a video of a plywood octagon coloring the air in a room, unhinged fromthe physicality of its location.
