Merchandising Matters by Jennifer Albaugh, Quiltique When was the last time you walked into a shop, of any kind, that just wowed you? From the moment you entered you were excited by what you saw and what you were about to experience. You lingered around and moved throughout the store looking around every corner, wondering what you would find next. What was it about that shop that captivated you? What was it that seduced you into spending every dollar in your wallet? The funny thing is, you may not be able to put your finger on it; you may have just loved everything about that store. That feeling, for the most part, is the result of great merchandising. Jennifer Albaugh, owner of Quiltique, engagingly walks us through: • Creating a unique identity • Basic merchandising principles • Elements of dynamic displays • Catching the impulse buy • Making the most of your samples • Merchandising before markdowns • Plus more... Merchandising is knowing what to buy, when to buy it, what to price it at, how to package it, and then how to display it for the most sales at the highest profit margin. Whew! That sounds like a lot of work, right? Well, we as shopowners are all merchandisers to a great extent in our own shops. The question is, do you do it well?
