5 SIMPLE ACTIVITES BY LAURA WINZELER
TO KEEP YOU HEALTHY AND HAPPY Marvelous modern science is allowing us to live longer than ever before, but as discussed in our previous issue’s “Fitness After 50” column, there’s a big difference between life span and health span. Sure, we’d like to stay around as long as possible, but we want to enjoy vibrant health and clarity of mind while we’re lingering. For years we’ve been told that adults should strive for a minimum 2.5 hours of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week to stay healthy. Last year, researchers from the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society published a study that showed getting 3 to 5 times more physical activity than those baseline amounts yields the greatest benefit in terms of a longer life. Study participants who logged approximately one hour every day of the week walking, running, cycling, dancing, playing racquet sports, or swimming lowered their risk of death by 39 percent compared to those who did not exercise at all. But don’t get overwhelmed -- even adding a bit more to what you’re currently doing helps: “The greatest benefit is going from doing nothing to doing something, even if it’s less than the minimum recommended amount,” according to Alpa Patel, PhD, an American Cancer researcher for the study. To inspire you further, here are five of our favorite simple activities to keep you healthy while you age gracefully and gratefully.

WALKING:
You
probably already know that walking is great for keeping your blood sugar,
blood pressure, and blood lipid levels within a healthy range. Walking reduces your risk of osteoporosis, improves circulation, and strengthens your heart. The National Cancer Institute confirms that moderate physical activity is linked to a reduced risk of colon and breast cancer and likely lowers the risk for cancers of the lung, prostate, and uterine lining. But did you know that walking can improve brain fitness, regardless of age? The amazing plasticity of the human brain allows us to generate new brain cells throughout life, especially in the hippocampus region, the very small area responsible for learning and memory. In a 2011 interview with National Public Radio, Peter Snyder, Vice President for Research at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School, named exercise as the most effective non-invasive treatment for nourishing new connections between brain neurons, “More so than nutritional supplements, vitamins, and cognitive interventions...The literature on exercise is just tremendous,” he said. One study showed that moderate walking for just 40 minutes three times a week caused a 2 percent increase in the volume of the anterior hippocampus, comparable to “turning back the clock about two years.” If you can log just 1.5 miles per day, six days a week, you can reduce the risk of developing memory problems by 50 percent. While pounding the treadmill inside delivers good results, recent studies at Stanford University show the importance of getting outside for your walk. A leisurely stroll alone in nature – no talking, no music – reduces blood flow to the brain’s subgenual prefrontal cortex, the rumination region. When you brood over problems, this area lights up. Enjoy an immediate mood lift and tamping down of negative mind chatter with a quick 30-minute walk through your nearest park or greenbelt with the sun on your face and the breeze in your hair.

GO TOTALLY NUTS!: If we could choose one super food to add to your daily diet for maximum results, it would be nuts. We’re not talking about those yummy carob or yogurt-coated morsels in the bulk bins. While all nuts are beneficial, raw walnuts and pecans are especially loaded with
powerful health-promoting substances. Studies show that an extract in walnuts is extremely toxic to the mitochondria in cancer cells. In a European study, people who ate three weekly servings (just three ounces) of walnuts reduced their risk of dying from all forms of cancer by 54 percent. Walnuts are loaded with potent polyphenols, compounds that reduce your risk for heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels and cooling the inflammation linked to cardiovascular disease. Harvard University’s 30-year study discovered that regular nut eaters were less likely to die of cancer, heart disease, or any other health-related cause when compared with people who never ate nuts. Pecans increase the amount of healthy antioxidants in the body and contain more than 19 essential vitamins and minerals, including generous amounts of vitamin A, vitamin E, and B-complex vitamins. One ounce of pecans provides 10 percent of the Recommended Daily Value for fiber. Chop nuts for garnish on your soups and salads, and toss a container into your purse, glove compartment, or briefcase for snacks on the go. Roasted walnuts and pecans are delicious and lose no benefits during the heating process.
benefits if you choose exercises that engage the hippocampus, your brain’s memory center. Brain fitness programs like Elevate, Lumosity, and Dakim provide hundreds of games, puzzles, and individual activities designed to improve attention and concentration. Choose games that offer stimulating variety tailored to your specific goals, and aim for 20 minutes of daily brain muscle flexing. Doing crossword and Sudoku puzzles on the couch counts, too! Research indicates that computerized cognitive training is not nearly as effective as novel and challenging real-world activities that involve other people. Studies in 2002 at the University of Michigan showed that social engagement is directly and proportionately linked to lower cognitive impairment and better decision-making and memory performance. Because your brain works through associations, the more senses that you engage in your activities, the better. Some superior brain-boosting suggestions include: •
Learn to play a musical instrument or join a choir. Scientists know that playing music is like a CrossFit workout for your brain.

A LAUGH A DAY: Just like exercise, laughter is one of the fastest ways to rev up an endorphin release and lower the levels of stress hormones in the blood. Even just anticipating a
laugh while you watch your favorite comic triggers a rush of feel-good hormones. As Laughter Yoga proves, your body cannot even differentiate between fake and real laughter. You receive the same physiological and psychological benefits from laughing over absolutely nothing. Laughing stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles. It increases the delivery of oxygen-rich air to your body and brain, and it helps your blood vessels stay elastic and resilient. Laughter strengthens the immune system and relieves pain. Cancer Treatment Centers of America finds laughter so important for wellness, it offers Laughter Club -- humor therapy sessions for patients and their families. Find daily ways to chuckle, with or without an audience, and with or without a reason.
5
GARDENING: Bloom Where You’re Planted! Digging in soil, bending, pruning, and getting up and down is great physical exercise, plus you’re left with a magnificent creation that
bears witness to your efforts. Growing plants and flowers triggers the release of serotonin and dopamine, and lowers cortisol, the stress hormone. The gentle rhythm of gardening helps you be mindfully present in the now moment, and it offers a sense of achievement when other things in your life may feel out of your control. If you’re land- and space-challenged, explore container, vertical, and square foot gardening. You can turn any balcony, front porch, or small patio into a lush jungle of beauty and fresh produce. Plant herbs in a kitchen window box, and revel in the joys of tending orchids, violets, bonsai trees, or your basic house fern or dieffenbachia. 14 FITNESS & HEALTH
STRONGER AT EVERY AGE.
H
ave you ever stood in front of a mirror with a puzzled look wondering, “What the heck happened to my body? I used to be stronger,
leaner, and perhaps even taller?” The taller thing may just be an optical illusion or a topic for another article, but the basic question eventually finds us all, men or women. It is a well-known fact that after the age of 30, your tone and muscle strength begins to decline; after 50, maintaining and increasing muscle may have you feeling like you are running up a “down” escalator. We all want to maintain our youthful shape and vitality, but let’s be honest, it is usually the desire to look good that drives us to the gym or sporting activity. In this case, vanity is your best friend. Without healthy muscle, your overall health declines, quality of life diminishes, and your risk of developing degenerative disease is at an all time high. As you will most likely agree, regaining and maintaining muscle after 50 feels a whole lot different than it did twenty years ago. In our desperation to hold on to our strength and vanity, we look for support and interventions to tip the scales back in our favor. This explains the popularity and growth of hormone clinics, anti-aging centers, and all kinds of esthetic solutions popping up in every city across the United States. While it is true that anabolic hormones such as testosterone are important in creating lean muscle, there are many other factors that contribute to the decline of your muscle tone and strength.

Factors Contributing To Age Related Muscle Delcine
What you don’t know about age-related muscle decline may be affecting your ability to build your tone, strength and overall health. Let’s take a look at the five factors contributing to age-related muscle decline.
1. Inflammation
- This causes a series of problems in the body and many times pain,
which in turn can affect your level of activity. Addressing inflammation in the body will help support the building of healthy muscle and tone.
2. Nutrition
- Inadequate protein intake will contribute to muscle decline in men and
women. Protein is essential for healthy tone and muscle. Your digestion needs to be functioning properly in order to break down and utilize your protein of choice. Good nutrition supports your muscle and overall health. When you choose healthy proteins and foods with anti-inflammatory qualities, you arm yourself with a smart muscle health plan.
3. Hormone Changes
– Having a hormonal imbalance will affect your body’s
ability to build muscle. Both men and women are affected by hormone changes as we age. Having your hormone levels tested and treating any imbalances supports a fitness plan to build, tone and keep your muscle health. You also need to make note that increasing testosterone also increases myostatin. It is best if you incorporate a myostatin inhibitor with testosterone. Speak with your doctor about testing your hormone levels and supporting healthy levels of both testosterone and myostatin.
4. Higher Levels of Myostatin
- With age, the body increases
the release of a protein called myostatin to inhibit the growth of muscle. To support optimum tone, muscle and strength as we age, myostatin levels have to be considered and addressed in your health plan. You might not have heard much about myostatin yet, but you will.
5. Inactivity
- Of course lower levels of activity will contribute
to a decrease in lean muscle mass and strength. When your body is supported properly to handle inflammation, nutrition, and hormone changes, the activity level typically increases automatically due to an improvement in energy, pain reduction, and cellular function.

MEDITATION It’s Never Too Late to Start
B
umper sticker wisdom reminds us that “The only bad workout is the one you didn’t do!” The same holds true for meditation. Thankfully, meditation has become more mainstream than
ever before. Yet there still remains a certain meditation-is-not-for-me or I’m-not-good-at-it skepticism that sometimes prevents people from reaping the benefits of this ancient yet essential practice. 22 FITNESS & HEALTH
Just Keep Breathing These wise words are at the core of what meditation is all about, because every practice occurs breath by breath. The essence of why we commit to any mindful experience is to feel centered, aware, and at peace in the present moment. This is the only moment in which we can tap into our inner inklings and notions, gain perspective, and see things as a whole. From that vantage point, we can make the wise choices that allow us to live fulfilling and meaningful lives.
“Meditation can teach us this art with the simple grace of following our breath in and out until we feel the life rhythm that always moves in our bodies.” ~ Jack Kornfield, in Handbook for the Heart
A Plethora of Practices There is a wide variety of meditation practices that work if we come to the experience with an open mind and heart and a willingness to just do it, whatever the specific practice calls for – sitting, lying down, walking, doing yoga or other disciplines involving movement. No matter what practice(s) we choose to explore, what matters is the commitment to simply do one’s best, to be in the moment for whatever period of time has been allotted. The very day-by-day familiarity of simply sitting (or moving) quietly is sufficient to reap the benefits of practice.
“Proper effort is not the effort to make something particular happen. It is the effort to be aware and awake in each moment… [ultimately it is] the effort to make each activity of our day meditation.” ~ His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama

the main idea is simply begin. The first and most available focus (also called an anchor) is the breath, so sit down (or stand up or walk slowly) and simply breathe, paying attention to each inhalation and exhalation. Feel the breath on the tip of your nose or flowing through your nostrils, or notice the rise and fall/expansion and contraction of your chest and abdomen. To build on this practice, add a focusing word or two such as breathe in “peace,” breathe out “release.” Here’s a helpful tip: set the timer on your mobile phone to chime gently several times a day and, when it sounds, pause and just breathe.
“Peace is always just a breath away.” ~ someone wise 24 FITNESS & HEALTH
KISS Keep It Simple and Satisfying Another basic suggestion is to get out in nature and walk mindfully…or sit quietly and listen to the sounds of life all around…or lie on the grass and watch the sky… or lean against a tree and focus on everything and nothing. Just BEING in nature renews us.
“It takes solitude, under the stars, for us to be reminded of our eternal origin and our far destiny.” ~ Archibald Rutledge
Here are two more easy excercises to try as you dip your toe into the world of mindful practices: or lie down somewhere quiet and concentrate on relaxing each 1. Sit part of your body one by one from head to toe. As you do so, notice and be grateful for each body part that has supported you on your life journey. any activity mindfully and with full attention. Wash the dishes 2. Do noticing everything - from the warmth of the water to the soap bubbles, to the squeaky cleanness of the rinsed plates, to the sense of satisfaction when you have dried and put everything away.
Moving Beyond Our Busy Mind and Busy Schedule “Most of us need to be given permission to switch from the doing to the being mode, mostly because we have been conditioned since we were little to value doing over being.” ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn Each of us has a wise inner voice that supports and guides us. Yet in our noisy, busy days we often fail to take time to listen to that voice. When we do, we are gifted with the capacity to connect deeply with life flowing through us, shifting us into a refreshing and spacious tranquility. Even the briefest moment of quiet contemplation can make a difference. Then as we go about our day, in the midst of all our activities, we can carry this stillness with us. And that, in a nutshell, is what makes our meditative practice worthwhile. FABULOUSLY50.COM 25

The 1960s brought us Woodstock, Twiggy, the moon landing, and multi-step skincare systems. As the decades passed the skincare industry grew exponentially both in America and around the world. It is projected that by 2018, the U.S. skincare market will approach nearly $11 billion. Skin care is now the highest spending category in the entire beauty industry. It seems we have come a long way from the days when a woman washed her face with the same bar soap the entire family used. In our 20s and 30s, a trip to the spa promised a special afternoon of relaxation and pampering. As we reach the age of 40 and beyond, we incorporate those spa days regularly into our beauty regimen to help us battle gravity, menopause and years of skin damage. FABULOUSLY50.COM 27

Non-Surgical Clock Reversers Unlike the limited options our mothers “faced,” we have access to a multitude of innovative outpatient techniques that reduce the effects of sun damage and tamp down our wrinkles and age spots. Cool touch infrared laser passes light energy through the epidermis to gently stimulate the dermis layer where collagen is formed. This triggers an internal repair mechanism that softens skin with no visible scarring or downtime. Full ablative laser skin resurfacing removes the outer layers of skin, resulting in red and tender newly-exposed skin that needs at least a week to heal.
28 FITNESS & HEALTH
Fractional skin resurfacing treats microscopic columns of skin to tap into the deeper layers and stimulate the healing response. It involves much less discomfort and downtime with minimal bleeding or scabbing. A chemical peel solution is applied to the skin, causing it to eventually peel off, leaving smooth and less wrinkled skin in its place. The mild alphahydroxy acid penetrates only the outer layer of skin to gently exfoliate it in a superficial peel. In a medium peel, glycolic or trichloroacetic acid penetrates the outer and middle layers of the skin. This treatment is very effective for lightening age spots, reducing wrinkles, and correcting freckles and moderate skin discoloration. It is also used to treat precancerous skin growths including actinic keratosis. The Obagi Blue peel is a popular example. Injectable fillers such as Voluma, Juvederm and Restylane offer temporary correction of wrinkles and facial folds. According to Dr. Berlin, “Hyaluronic acid fillers have come a long way. Voluma will last on average two years, which is twice as long as the standard facial fillers. It is used to restore volume to cheeks and temples, areas that are often neglected but contribute immensely to the overall rejuvenation of the face.”
Not Your Father’s Irish Spring Men are slowly coming around to acknowledge that deodorant bar soap does not belong on their faces, nor is body lotion an appropriate facial moisturizer. 2013 was the first year in which men spent more money on male-specific toiletries than on shaving products, and manufacturers have been happy to oblige. GETTING
A MOVE ON
MATTERS
W
e all know that a gal’s gotta do what a gal’s gotta do. Same is true for guys. If we want to live long, healthy
and flexible and energetic lives, exercise matters. No way around it, unless we are willing to put up with getting more-and-more round and lessand-less blissful about the way we look and feel.
But that doesn’t mean that we have to suffer our way through some rigid regimen if we don’t want to resign ourselves to being couch potatoes. Now is always the perfect time to love yourself enough to choose to be heartfully delighted every 32 FITNESS & HEALTH
time you get moving. Here are a few thoughts about finding your own personal, and perhaps ever-changing exercise groove. Buddy Up. Everything is more fun when it is shared. Go for a walk, talk and enjoy the camaraderie while you reap the benefits of “getting a move on”.
Clean Up. Indoors and out, take on some of those projects you’ve been putting off. Prune a tree, clean out the garden, tackle the boxes in the garage so that the car can finally fit in. Climb up carefully to the top shelves of your cabinets and toss out or give whatever you find. Every time you reach high, or bend low or twist about, your body will thank you. Sign Up. There are many ways to get fit that are as close as your local YM or YWCA, gym or playground. Find a local volley ball game, tennis group, a gymnastics class or a yoga studio. Try Laughter Yoga…this is a relatively new way to bring more joy into your life. I have actually gone to just such a class on the beach at sunrise. What a delightful way to greet the day! Kick up Your Heels and Dance up a Storm. Remember the Richard Simmons video, Sweating to the Oldies? There are countless women (and some brave men) who giggled away their girth to that music and enjoyed doing it. Check out local dance classes – from line dancing to the ballroom variety - that have either the primary or added bonus of joyfully toning-up the whole body. And speaking of toning-up to a beat, consider a drumming circle as another way to “get a move on”. Listen Up. Recorded books are a great way to catch up on all those titles you’ve been meaning to read, and to do it while you are walking at a brisk arm-swinging pace. Team Up to Serve. There are many ways to be of service while shedding pounds and building muscle. Think of it as “sweat equity” invested in your favorite organization. Participate in a clean-a-street or church or park campaign. Here in Florida there are groups like “Friends of Jupiter Beach” that get together to clean up their coastal area. Another wonderful team building effort is Habitat for Humanity. Cook Up a Storm. One pleasurable pastime that yields great results is cooking to Country Western music. It will keep you energized and moving your feet while preparing dinner. Some of the lyrics are so outrageous – such as “sometimes you’re the windshield and sometimes you’re the bug.” - that you can’t help but laugh your way through meal preparation. So what’s your pleasure? Whatever it is, there is no time like the gift to give yourself the present of joyful, playful exercise. Find your groove and “get a move on”. Your body, mind, and spirit will love you for it.

who understands your point of view, who has skills and abilities that complement and augment your own. I have the privilege of being an ally to hundreds of patients over the course of my medical career, and the first step to forming that relationship is making an honest introduction. My wellness philosophy and approach to helping patients solve their problems is to skillfully craft a customized plan and stay dedicated and supportive in the face of challenges. My approach is a consistent method of understanding where you are, meeting you in that place and applying all of the tools and expertise I have to helping you achieve your goals. Instead of memorizing symptoms and corresponding medications, I instinctively seek out the root cause of the problem and work to solve the issue from its
origins. This philosophical approach to foundational wellness is what drew me to osteopathy and functional medicine. I enjoy guiding my patients to wellness. It is through the application of biochemistry, physiology, physics, anatomy, genetics and appreciation that allows me to understand how the body works. I can then see where it needs support and I know how to restore vitality of the entire system, and that is what I love.
I present my clients with the best product possible, in terms of my service and my delivery of that service, I am here to create solutions, to coach my patients toward that solutions, and to form comfortable trusted relationships that facilitate long term success! I wrote my new book to shed light on the potential of PRP for sexual wellness. 50 percent of the US Population is coping with some form of sexual dysfunction, operating under the erroneous impression that they have few solutions for a perceived shameful issue. Given that the couple has made successful careers for themselves as live performers, the transition to a successful radio format is a surprise that’s bringing them new rewards.
WHO’D A THUNK IT? “It’ll never work,” was Rich’s battle cry, after being approached to host the radio show by station owner Dick Robinson. But his and Jill’s thorough knowledge and decades-long performances of the Great American Songbook was Robinson’s lure. The station is a 24-hour homage to the greatest music ever recorded. Once you listen to the original and newly-cut contemporary versions of songs that swim in your head, you’ll be hooked – like the over 100,000 listeners the station attracts weekly. As performers who grew up in musical environments, both Jill and Rich honed their performances around the music that fits their temperaments and talent -- The Great American Songbook. Classic American tunes from the stage, screen, smoke-filled nightclubs and rallying cries supporting the War effort. Jill and Rich bring the juxtapositions between the original voices, and the singers who keep the music alive, to the ears of today’s audience. Over the course of my 40 year career, I have been fired 39% of the time. In any other field, this might be a questionable thing to brag about, but as an entertainment executive and film producer for much of the past 40 years, this is business-as-usual in a very tumultuous, fast-paced industry. Ironically, changing jobs regularly has prepared me very well for the 21st century workplace - a challenging environment for Boomers. Many of us have spent our entire careers with just one or two companies, and to be marginalized at work, or to get “downsized” as we are rounding the bend towards retirement (or what we had hoped would be retirement...) feels like a low blow. The Boomer Reinvention® System grows out of my experience navigating jobs in Hollywood, but is also guided by my studies in psychology that led to earning my MA, and enabling my own career reinvention from film production to education and training. Starting out in the 70s, I became fascinated by the intersection of business and creativity, and the talent needed to create successful content. Starting my career as a talent agent, I became a film studio executive in the 80s, working for companies including Warner Bros, Columbia, and MGM, supervising movies that now only Boomers remember: DINER, THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY, PINK FLOYD THE WALL (among others). In the 90s, I veered into the emerging interactive market, producing

LIVING ABROAD Millions of Americans think of IT from time to time… millions dream of IT… and millions have already made the decision to do IT. IT is making the decision to live outside of the United States.
BY KEN AND DARIA DOLAN AMERICA’S FIRST FAMILY OF PERSONAL FINANCE
No snow shovels, scraping ice off of your windshield, hurricanes, tornadoes, sub-zero temperatures…no 9-5 rat race environment…just balmy ocean breezes, world-class sunsets and new experiences. It is estimated that more than 8,000,000 Americans have discovered that it’s easy and often more affordable to create new lives and broaden their horizons outside our hallowed shores…and the number is growing.

Some may be fulfilling a lifelong dream, while others are looking for ways to stretch the value of their nest eggs…others have left to work. It is exciting to experience new cultures, a lower cost of living, learn a new language and make new friends in a leisurely, stress-free environment. But be sure to do your research before you purchase your one-way ticket to paradise! No country is perfect. Some places are better for visiting than for living long-term. Hidden costs and lifestyle trials can be a drag for those retiring abroad…and being older does not make it easier. However, property prices and the cost of living, including food, transportation and excellent healthcare, in many countries is inexpensive, compared to many parts of the U.S. and downright cheap when compared to living in most of Europe. In this article, thanks to our “go-to” source of living abroad information, internationalliving.com, we will pass along a sampling of the living costs in some of their highest-rated retirement locales…and tell you their #1 choice of 2016 retirement havens. Although it depends on from where you’re coming, to where you move and how you choose to live, your cost of living in many retirement havens is highly controllable. While some costs are set, many expenses, including those that constitute the majority of your budget, can be scaled up or down.

Challenges? Yes…but not insurmountable. Finances: Since many financial organizations are closing accounts for Americans abroad or declining to open new ones in order to avoid increased compliance, it is important that you check with any financial institution with which you currently do business before you leave regarding how you will continue that business from a location outside of the U.S. That’s because, starting with the 2016 tax year, Americans who are living abroad and have one or more foreign bank accounts containing more than $10,000 of assets, must file a Treasury form… the Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR, Form TDF 90-22.1) by April 15th. However, for the first time, taxpayers will be able to request an extra 6 months to file the form. Moving with pets: If you plan to take your favorite pet with you, you may have to go through a lengthy and costly quarantine process. You will likely need a health certificate for your pet from your local vet, obtain the required vaccinations, and you might have to pay for your pet to be quarantined in your host country for up to several weeks or months.
Other considerations - - questions to ask yourself and Moving abroad: Moving anywhere is never cheap. Your shipping expense will depend on the size/weight of your belongings, your airfare/luggage, storing a car in the U.S. or shipping it abroad, etc.

SINGLE AFTER 50+ THE GAME HAS CHANGED
In 2007, I found myself single again, and I wondered...Am I prepared for what lies ahead? What do I say? How do I act? Do I try Online Dating? How should I begin? It takes a lot of courage to start all over again...especially when you probably haven’t “dated” since your teens. And that was decades ago! I hope my experience can help you prepare for your new adventure. First and foremost, don’t be intimidated by the younger singles. They have their own strengths and so do you. Relax, it’s only dating...and it can be fun. Start by catching up on current events, work on feeling good about yourself and what you can bring to a new relationship.

Hot Tip: Be honest, don’t exaggerate. Leave your “ex” and other issues out of it. Be upbeat. Remember you want someone to contact you – this is NOT your sounding board for all your past bad experiences. Upload current pictures that show you at your best. Once you’ve finished your bio and completed the preference questions, you are ready to begin your online adventure. The process begins with virtual correspondence, emails, texts, and if you choose, phone calls. This allows you to feel comfortable with whom you’re conversing before having a face-to-face meeting.
Hot Tip: Be sure to Google your potential match, and while you’re at it, check them out on Facebook. You can learn a lot about someone by their favorite posts, and Facebook will show you any friends you have in common. A mutual friend could be a great source for learning more about your potential date! Eventually it will be time to take the plunge and set up an interview – which is really a meeting! Times have changed, years ago you probably had your date pick you up at home. However, for safety reasons, you now meet at a local restaurant, lounge or coffee bar. Be sure you tell a couple of your friends where you will be, who’ll you will be with and what time you’ll be there.
Tip For Men: The man’s role may have changed from picking up a date at home to meeting her at a restaurant, but it’s the well-mannered gentleman who walks a lady to her car and offers to pay for his date’s valet or parking. Both men and women should dress nicely. Remember, this first impression could turn into a date! Your best behavior, manners and etiquette apply. Men should start by complimenting the lady, and women should be just as courteous. Once I began the online dating process, I was curious as to why my dates had chosen me. Some of them were not exactly what I thought my profile aimed for, but I didn’t give up and neither should you. You may want to tweak your profile and add new photos to get better results. Your profile is definitely a “work in progress” and needs continued fine tuning. You may be asking “How are you so qualified to give advice about dating after 50, specifically online?”

ADVENTURES IN ONLINE DATING I never thought I’d try online dating, but once I “took the plunge,” I started on a GREAT adventure! I had a ball setting up my profile. I said I was looking for a tall, old-fashioned, well-mannered, sweet, kind, romantic, sensitive, exciting, successful, fun-loving, generous, passionate, intelligent, witty, physically fit, “Real Deal” kind of man, who also was a great cook. (I figured if I was going to take a chance, why not fantasize a bit and go for the whole enchilada!) The description of my “dream mate” must have rung some bells with the men out there...my inbox was full within the hour. And so, my adventures began… Date #1: He was a handsome firefighter. He was funny, sweet and intelligent. It didn’t really matter that he was three inches shorter than me in my flats. Who cared, I thought he was great! We decided that we would be friends forever. Even though he wasn’t the “man of my dreams,” I was not going to give up. I was just getting started on a list of endless prospects. Date #2: I met my second date at a famous restaurant in Palm Beach where everyone knew me. Can you believe he turned out to be a famous screen actor? He walked in as if he owned the room, and hugged me like he’d known me my entire life. But I towered over him in my flats. (I said to myself, “How can this be?” Both guys were so wonderful, but so short in stature!) After ordering wine and appetizers, he began to sing Italian arias while gazing into my eyes – and those of the woman sitting next to me. She whispered into my ear, “This one’s a keeper!” Next he proceeded to recite lines from the various movies he’d made, entertaining the entire bar. When it was time to leave, everyone applauded his performance and asked for his autograph. One of the men sitting at the end of the bar said, “If you don’t go out with him, I will.” And what happened? We stay in touch and laugh about everything, including our opposite political beliefs. He has promised me that one day I will walk the Red Carpet with him. Date #3 And who came next? An attorney/songwriter/actor from the West Coast contacted me. We communicated for about a month, and we secretly Googled each other to see if we were who we said we were. (By the way, I believe Googling your date should be a prerequisite before meeting him.) We both passed that test, and then came the usual questions about being single, previous marriage(s), children, likes, dislikes, interests, hobbies, etc. (Remember, this is an interview with a strange person. I try to find out as much as possible before setting up a meeting.) 58 LIFESTYLE

Welcome to America Although the Bikini was still considered risqué, it gradually became a part of Popular Culture. In the 1950’s, Marilyn Monroe was immortalized wearing a two piece bathing suit more times than we can count. Shortly after, Brigitte Bardot was photographed with Kirk Douglas on a beach during the 1953 Cannes Film Festival. The 19 year old beauty started the trend with Bikini-clad stars and was widely credited with popularizing the Bikini. Before long, liberated young women in Bikinis were causing quite the stir along the Mediterranean Coast. However, across the Atlantic in prudish America, the Bikini was kept at bay until the 1960s. During this era, a new focus on youthful freedom and liberated ideals emerged. Faster than the rising tide, the Bikini was the craze all over the shores of American beaches. In 1963 the first movie of the famed “Beach Party” series with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon was released. Even “Sports Illustrated” followed the Bikini frenzy. During an uneventful season in winter sports, editor, Andre Laguerre and fashion reporter, Julie Campbell took a chance and featured Berlin born fashion model, Babette March, on the cover wearing a two-piece midriff baring swimsuit. Little did they know just how epic that daring move would be. The famed “Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue” had it’s debut in 1964 and has become an American pop-culture staple.
The appeal and popularity of the Bikini grew faster than ever and quickly became one of fashion’s most sought out item through the generations. Over the past seven decades, The iconic Bikini seemed to get smaller and smaller. On Bikini’s 70th Birthday, it remains as “genuine” as the day Louis Réard defined it. So, this summer when you happen to see a Teenie Weenie Bikini, start humming the tune...smile to yourself and say~ Happy 70th Bikini! FABULOUSLY50.COM 69

AS THE PUBLISHERS OF FABULOUSLY50+ WE ARE PROUD TO BE PARTNERING WITH THE AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION FOR THE PROTECTION FROM ABUSE AND NEGLECT OF OUR MOST VULNERABLE FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS. WE ARE PROUD TO BE A VOICE FOR THE “BE KIND TO ANIMALS” CAMPAIGN AND LOOK FORWARD TO INCLUDING OUR READERS IN OUR ONGOING MISSION TO SUPPORT ANIMAL KINDNESS.
American Humane Association For generations of Americans, May has always been associated with kindness. Indeed, millions of people around the country young and old are joining American Humane Association, the first national humane organization, to celebrate the second century of our “Be Kind to Animals Week®,” the oldest commemorative week in U.S. history. But this celebration is something that’s much bigger than one week; it’s something we should celebrate all year long. With the help of several U.S. Presidents and First Ladies; entertainers such as Shirley Temple, John Wayne and Betty White; and even Dennis the Menace and Porky Pig, this special week has taught generations of American children the enduring value of treating animals with love, care and compassion. Building on this historic legacy, we are now working to help the next generation of children change the world for millions of companion and working animals, and billions of wild and farm animals. We created a new PreK-6 curriculum to teach them the meaning of caring and set the stage to create a more humane world for animals over the next hundred years. And we brought this message to hundreds of children around South Florida with a tour of schools and community centers, giving kids a chance to learn firsthand about some wonderful animal ambassadors up close. At American Humane Association, we believe the best way to ensure kindness and compassion for all animals is to pledge personally to make a difference. We ask that Americans take the kindness pledge at www.Kindness100.org, commit to celebrating “Be Kind to Animals Week” all year round, and teach the next generation the timeless values of kindness and compassion so we can meet the challenges still facing billions of animals in every area of life. The need has never been greater and the time has never been better to start a new Compassion Movement. By teaching our children the value of kindness and doing a few simple things that require little or no cost, we may together build a better world for our animal friends and ourselves. Dr. Robin Ganzert is the President and CEO of American Humane Association, the first national humane organization, and the only charity dedicated to the protection of both children and animals. She is the host of the weekly radio show “Be Humane with Dr. Robin Ganzert,” on Pet Life Radio, the number one pet network on the planet. In fall 2014 she published her first book, Animal Stars: Behind the Scenes with Your Favorite Animal Actors. You can follow her on Twitter at @robinganzert.

PB CATCH Focusing on Local Fish…with a “Catch”
PB Catch is a unique dining experience, one you will surely want to place at the top of your Fabulous Foods list. Filling a missing niche in the area, restaurateur Thierry Beaud and partner Reid Boren recognized that Palm Beach lacked a place where locally caught fish stars as the headliner.

“Though many restaurants in town serve fish, we saw that the Island was missing a restaurant where primarily local seafood could be the star,” said Boren, “and so we set our creative imaginations to work.” From the moment you walk through the door you sense something different. Outfitted in a style set to evoke the interior of a luxury yacht, rich mahogany walls and white leather banquettes create the backdrop for this exquisite dining destination.
The 350-gallon saltwater aquarium, a recent
addition to the restaurant, resembles a beautiful piece of art in motion. Featured on National Geographic’s Fish Tank Kings, the aquarium boasts the world’s first display of translucent coral and rocks.

PB Catch is a casual place with beautiful food, a place where a perfect plate of oysters could be shared at the bar. (And let it be noted that the variety of the raw bar — the only one in town — is exceptional.) Dishes are creative and seasonal with a focus on clean, balanced flavors and sustainability. Chef de Cuisine Aaron Black changes the menu daily, depending on the catch. He is famous for his trademarked specialty, Seacuterie, a unique, decadent and healthy way to enjoy Florida’s finest seafood. With its fresh and innovative menu, inviting nautical atmosphere, and savvy culinary team — the same team behind Pistache French Bistro in West Palm Beach — it’s no wonder that PB Catch has received recognition from Palm Beach Illustrated, National Culinary Review, The
Palm Beach Post and many others. Already popular on the Island, PB Catch is sure to become one of the area’s enduring dining traditions.

WHY SHOULD I
STAY AWAY FROM GLUTEN? You walk into a bakery and smell the sweet aroma of freshly baked bread. Your mouth starts to water in anticipation of that first bite into the soft, chewy French baguette with the deliciously crispy crust. Perfection. How could something so heavenly be so bad for you? It’s quite a shame, but it’s true, wheat is not good for you. What! Why? Before I get into that, you should understand what gluten is. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, spelt and barley, and the products made with any of these ingredients, wheat being the most widely used and consumed. When flour is mixed with water, the gluten provides a glue like consistency that gives bread its elasticity and chewy-ness. In addition to obvious sources such as bread, crackers, other baked goods, and pasta, gluten can also be found in food colorings, candy, pudding, marshmallows, flavored teas or coffee, grain alcohol (beer, ale, rye, scotch, and vodka), gravy, imitation meats, processed meats, salad dressing, seasoning packets, soups, soy sauce, and dietary supplements. Even your lipstick may contain gluten.

ZUCCHINI “PASTA”
Ingredients: Zucchini Salt – Sea Salt or Kosher is best
Preparation: Using a vegetable peeler, peel strips off zucchini, working your way around the squash. They can be as narrow or as wide as you like. Keep going until you reach the seeds (A few seeds won’t matter, but you don’t want it to be too seedy). You can also use a mandoline for this. Place them with the zucchini strips in a colander or strainer, sprinkle a liberal amount of salt and toss to coat. Use a teaspoon of salt for each cup of zucchini strips. Put the colander over a bowl and with a small plate, or another bowl on top, squeeze out the juice. Weight the plate with a couple cans of food. Leave it like this for at least an hour, or up to 24 hours (They get more solid over time, but most of the action happens in the first hour). If you think of it, toss the strips with your fingers at some point to make sure the brine is welldistributed. The salt rinse off. The zucchini pasta is now ready. It doesn’t really need cooking, but you can warm it up for 20 seconds in gently boiling water. Don’t cook it too long, or it will stick together and become mushy. It’s much more delicate than regular pasta.

Pink Himalayan Salt draws its natural pink color from energy-rich iron and mineral content, crystallized over two hundred million years ago.

HIMALAYAN PINK SALT Minerals are the foundation of life, creating balance, flow, and ease in the body.
Ever wonder what “in the pink” means? “In very good health and spirits -- blooming, flourishing, thriving, vigorous, strong, lusty, and robust.” It will come as no surprise, therefore, to learn that adding pink Himalayan salt to your diet is a powerful way to infuse your life with vitality. These delicate, luminous pink crystals are derived from ancient seabed salt deposits and provide one of the purest and most nutrient-rich seasoning salts available. Himalayan pink salt was formed from the fossil deposits of marine life that swam the seas over 250 million years ago during the Jurassic era. This valuable commodity has been used for centuries by the people of the Himalayas to preserve meats and fish, and was transported to neighboring Nepalese valleys for trade. Himalayan pink salt contains the same 84 natural minerals, trace elements, and electrolytes found in our bodies required for optimal functioning in countless metabolic processes. The unique cellular structure of the salt makes the minerals and trace elements highly absorbable for the human body. Although the buld of pink salt commercially marketed as Himalayan in the United States comes from a massive industrial rock salt mine in Khewra, Pakistan, it’s possible to find distributors who source their salt from small villages in the Himalayan ranges. There the salt is still hand-harvested, hand-crushed, hand-washed, and dried in the sun, in keeping with the region’s long-standing mining traditions.

Season with salt and white pepper. Store beurre blanc in a thermos until ready to serve.
Set the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until the first starch takes hold, 5 to 8 minutes. Reduce the heat to the lowest possible setting and cover the pan. Meanwhile, heat 2 cups of water in a small saucepan and keep hot. Every 10 minutes or so, uncover the grits and stir them; each time you find them thick enough to hold the spoon upright, stir in a small amount of the hot water, adding about 1½ cups water or more in 4 or 5 additions. Cook until the grits are creamy and tender throughout, but not mushy, and hold their shape on a spoon, about 50 minutes if the grits were soaked or about 90 minutes if they weren’t. Fold in shredded Fortsonia cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. To finish, stir in the butter with vigorous strokes.
Presentation: Place seared scallops in pre heated oven for 4-5 minutes or until very warm in the center. Place 1 cup of finished grits on center of serving plate. Remove scallops from oven when done and place on top of grits. Drizzle butter sauce around grits on plate.

The Making of a Legend: Bill Charlap
Making Music Magic You can look in the dictionary and find the definition of a legend: a famous or important person who is known for doing something extremely well. Or you can simply listen to the music of award-winning artist Bill Charlap. As Bill hits his 50th birthday, he also hits a major milestone: winning a GrammyÂŽ Award for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern with legendary Tony Bennett. It should really come as no surprise that Bill grew up 110

Musical Beginnings F50+: When did you decide to become a professional musician? BC: I don’t ever remember a time that I didn’t play the piano. I always gravitated toward music and it has always been central to my life. I was actually always an improvising pianist. Whatever I played I learned by ear. Whether it was Classical, Theatre Music, or Jazz. My parents were professional musicians, so they recognized that it was natural, and it chose me. My parents saw that from the get go. So it was never really a question, I was always a musician and that was it.
The Collaboration When Charlap was about 20 years old, a friend brought Tony Bennett to hear him play solo piano at a jazz club on the Upper West Side. Charlap recalled that fateful day saying, “I was amazed to meet one of my all time heroes!” A number of years later he was playing with a band at the Blue Note when between sets the Maitre D’ came to his dressing room and said, “Tony Bennett is here, he’d like to speak to you.” Honored and humbled, Bill went to speak with Tony. He asked Bill if he would do a number of dates with him. BC: I jumped at the chance to play with him. I was honored to fill in for
