id you know that the health and fitness market has more than 500 magazines covering all aspects of ones well being? It’s true, so it should not be that surprising that health and fitness magazines have grown by more than 60% over the past 10 years. And because we are a lifestyle brand, we naturally focus on the topics most important to you, our readers. That’s why we’re so excited to share with you our Summer Health and Fitness issue of Fabulously50 Magazine! In producing this issue, not only did we create plenty of great editorial features, but WE MADE A FEW KEY DECISIONS: 1. Fabulously50 will be quarterly: twice a year in print and twice online (www.fabulously50.com), adding a “Bon Appetit” issue to our Travel, Fashion and Health and Fitness issues. 2. We’ve added way more product pages so you can look, love, read the caption and move on satisfied. 3. Who says you can’t improve on perfection! We’re totally excited to share Fab50’s smokin’ hot, sexy new design. Introducing Shannon Wolfgang, our new designer who gave this publication a new look that’s going to blow your socks off (okay, maybe not literally, but we hope you love it as much as we do!) So, what can you expect to find on this issues beautifully designed pages? How about: SPORTS. Many new sports have gained notoriety over the years, such as rugby, track and field, mixed martial arts, and golf. But what about tennis? In our Lifestyle section, we’ll share various ways to enjoy this great sport and maybe you’ll decide its time to pick up a racquet and fall in “love” with this fun ‘n fabulous way to stay fit. NUTRITION. People, especially baby boomers, are interested in longevity. Do you know what foods are considered “super foods” and more importantly, what they can do for your health? Are you familiar with meal plans and how they are prepared for you? In our Bon Appetit section, we cover both—and more—read on! HEALTH. With Florida becoming one of the most recent states to legalize medical marijuana this past year, we wanted
to share the good and the bad of what this means for the Sunshine State. Looking for the latest Health Apps? We give you 10 of the most popular apps that will help keep you on a healthy path. SEX. Sex may be a taboo to some but not for many. Let’s face it, almost everyone is interested in it—if not actively participating. As we age, certain medicines become part of our daily routines. It’s inevitable. But not always a positive for performance and desire. In this issue, we examine how meds affect our sex lives. A must-read! WORKING OUT. Exercise is a part of regular routines for many individuals and just as many—especially baby boomers—are thinking about adding new exercise routines to their daily activities. Workout articles are often how-tos (e.g., how to build a muscle, work out for 5 minutes, or reduce injuries). Ours offers a variety of “need to know” info: types of fitness, gyms, new kinds of workouts, and the science behind workouts. APPAREL AND ACCESSORIES. Exercise equipment rakes in billions of dollars every year and makes up 25 percent of the entire fitness supplies and accessories category. But wait! There’s more. There’s a stunning fashion layout that takes you to Worth Avenue where the style is high and the look is NOW! Meet designers, lifestyle gurus (our fashion model) and more. BEAUTY. Topics include skin care products, best brands for a certain type of skin, organic skin care, mineral makeup, new methods of styling, product reviews, cosmetic procedures, hairstyles, make-ups, salons, and celebrity makeup artists and stylists. FOR MEN. Check out what is happening in electronics, sex, and more. So if you are ready to celebrate the rest of summer —not to mention your life— read on and let us know what you think. Your input is very important to us. Enjoy!

You’re NEVER too old to begin!
Get Fit Staying fabulously fit over 50 never felt so great BY S U SAN J. S H E RM AN
Remember back in the ’80s, when a very fit Olivia Newton-John pranced around singing, “Let’s Get Physical”? Fast forward to 2017—getting physical takes on a whole new meaning—especially for those of us over 50 years old who want to live well and maintain our youthful physiques. By eating healthier and finding exercise we enjoy, we can still look and feel our best. 10
BODY & MIND
TRIPLE THREAT
Yoga is a preferred exercise for those of us who are 50 plus because it’s a low impact workout that combines strength with balance and as a bonus, relieves stress. What’s more, it’s relatively easy to learn the poses from simple to advanced. There’s no pressure and you can go at your own pace. “Yoga offers modifications in every posture to accommodate everyone’s body and their limitations,” says Yoga instructor Amy Kenny of Fusion Fitness Yoga, www.fusionfitnessyoga.com and www.openair-yoga.com in Coral Springs. You can find classes for stretching, balance and even chair-assisted. “Yoga teaches us to stay mindful and incorporate breath to reduce stress,” Amy says. “Through yoga, we strengthen core and balance, stay heart healthy and as a result, look more youthful.”
Also popular are triathlons, which incorporate swimming, biking and running. Individually, they offer a great workout, but many over 50 now train for triathlons and marathons, taking the mindset of much younger athletes. Debbie Meitz, a registered nurse, personal trainer and certified triathlon coach teaches strength, mobility and power endurance for athletes at TribBoxhq and www.3timesfitness.com. “I work with quite a few folks over 50 who’re looking to accomplish much of what younger folks want in a workout— to be fit, toned and gain endurance,” she explains. “This isn’t the 50-year-old generation of our parents! I’m training them for Half Ironman and Full Ironman triathlons.”
GO TO THE CORE Pilates is an all-encompassing workout that builds flexibility, endurance and tones every part of the body. Expect a lean dancer’s body if you’re committed to this full-body workout that incorporates some cardio with strengthening. “It’s one of the most popular workouts for women over 50 because all you need is a mat,” says Nyota Desai, owner of Classical Pilates with Nyota in Parkland. “I teach classical mat Pilates because I can teach it anywhere. Exercise shouldn’t be fussy; it should be attainable,” she says. Pilates is especially great for the 50-plus set because it benefits the entire body. It’s low impact and helps with alignment, core strength and muscle balance. It’s a social, too—many are attracted to group classes because they offer a chance to make new friends.

HIGH INTENSITY
PERSONAL TRAINING
High intensity interval workouts that combine strength and cardiovascular training are also gaining popularity among 50-plus peeps. One of the leaders in this cutting-edge training is Orangetheory Fitness, which has centers popping up all over South Florida. The program, popular with all age groups, was inspired by partner/founder, Ellen Latham. “The Orangetheory Fitness workout is a must for anyone over 50, (and I would know— I’m 60). One of the main reasons is that it’s a workout for the heart. All clients wear an OT Beat monitor, which enables you to measure how hard you’re working. “You’re never to old to train hard,” Ellen believes. “We have many members in their 50s, 60s and 70s. In fact, I’ve seen firsthand an 82-year-old participating in our intense workouts.” How about that?
The goal of living longer and maintaining our quality of life so that we can enjoy our children, grandchildren, retirement and travel is what motivates us. And knowing what exercises can increase strength and stamina are key to keeping our lifestyles fabulous. Michael Morrell, a West Palm Beach Fitness Director of the popular YouFit Health Clubs, has several clients over 50. “Some are overcoming injuries and just want to get back their strength and then there are those that are competing in body building competitions,” he says. Boot camps and cardio kick-boxing are among their most popular offerings. “Funny thing about fitness is that it applies to all ages from beginner to advanced,” he says. “I think functional strength training (interval training using weights) is the desire among the 50-plus group that comes in. They want to kick butt and go home with a victory every day!”
NEVER TOO LATE “You’re never too old to begin,” says Louise Goldberg, Yoga Therapist, author and owner of The Yoga Center of Deerfield Beach. “I have students in their 70s and 80s. Yoga’s wonderful for flexibility and balance. Through consistent practice students become firmer, stronger and more agile. It also teaches us to how slow our breath, which helps digestion and improves our immune system,” she explains. Goldberg recommends standing poses, arm balances and isometric holds to strengthen the body. It’s also a career path. “We have many retired people who’ve trained to become teachers at the center,” she says. FABULOUSLY50.COM 11

71%
number of voters approving the amendment in Florida
The effort to legalize medical marijuana in Florida dates back many years, with 2012 being the turning point as both Florida’s House and Senate had pending resolutions for legalization. At that time, 10 states already had Medical Marijuana legislation in place, with Massachusetts joining later that year for a total of 11 states which had some form of legalized Medical Marijuana. In Florida, a vote for a constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana was on the 2014 ballot and required a super-majority vote of 60% to pass. The vote fell two points shy with 58% of Florida voters, but strongly confirmed the fact that Florida voters wanted to legalize medical marijuana. Thereafter, in June, 2014, Governor Rick Scott signed a Bill, (the so-called “Charlottes Web” law) which allowed the production and sale of a non-euphoric strain of medical marijuana to be prescribed primarily to children with specific types of seizure related illnesses. The pro medical marijuana vote was ratified in 2016 with more then 71% of Florida voters overwhelmingly approving the amendment. Initially, only five very well-funded and politically connected entities were confirmed for medical marijuana licenses, and currently, as a result of lawsuit settlements, two more licenses were issued for a total of seven. So currently, although Medical marijuana is available in Florida, it remains illegal under federal law.
CannaServe™, Florida’s preeminent Cannabis Advisory Service, has been assisting businesses around the country gain entry into the rapidly growing cannabis industry. Over the last four years, CannaServe™ has seen a huge growth in the number of people in the 45 - to 65-year-old demographic make the conscious decision to both investigate and use cannabis for a variety of medical therapies. In addition, this demographic has surfaced as the driving factor in passing legislation for legalization, which fact was ratified in Florida’s 2016 vote. Due to the federal government’s classification of cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug, until recently, the lack of research performed has impeded clinical investigations, however, research is improving and currently underway to examine medical marijuana effects on a variety of diseases ranging from HIV to mental disorders. One of the strongest reasons medical marijuana use by seniors is rapidly increasing is the correlation between the types of ailments, which aging precipitates and the conditions and treatment benefits that medical cannabis can provide. The 45- to 65year-old population demographic has not only has been instrumental in many states in promoting the legalization of medical marijuana, but they are now even planning their retirements around living in states where medical marijuana is legalized.
You will need legitimate medical records from your primary care physician describing their diagnosis and then have a marijuana evaluation and must be a patient of the ordering doctor for at least three months prior to the diagnosis. Once you have received your prescription from an approved physician, you may present it to any licensed Florida Dispensary to fill and receive your medical marijuana. An excellent informational resource can be found at CannaServe.Info where you will be able to find many businesses that can assist you in your quest for medical marijuana therapy. You will find Dispensaries, Physicians, Care Givers as well as many shops with a wide range of products to maximize your therapy for the greatest effectiveness.

For Florida residents, the process to receive a Medical Marijuana Card to enable a person to receive medical marijuana begins with having been diagnosed with one of the following debilitating medical conditions and having previously undergone traditional treatments, which have proven ineffective:

GLAUCOMA POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)
SEVERE MUSCLE SPASMS CROHN’S DISEASE
CHRONIC NONMALIGNANT PAIN
OR any other condition of the same severity, as determined by a physician’s opinion that the patient would benefit from the medical use of marijuana. FABULOUSLY50.COM 2 FABULOUSLY50.COM

get salty BY S U SA N J. SH ERM AN
PAMPER YOURSELF Lucky for us, salt rooms, chambers/suites are popping up in spas or as stand-alone businesses all over the country. This all-natural, drug-free therapy works wonders for common respiratory conditions like asthma, allergies and happily — it works to reveal a more youthful version of you. Heather Veeravagu, the owner of The Salt Station in Boynton Beach, Fla., was inspired to start her own business when her husband and daughter sought relief from their year-round allergies. “They felt relief almost immediately after one treatment,” she says. “Salt is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory; it clears sinus passages as you breathe it in,” she explains. DISCOVER AN AGE-OLD SECRET “Salt” is centuries old and has been practiced in the finest European spas for decades. First, medieval monks were on board using salt found in their salt caves to heal. Later, the advantages of breathing in refined salt particles were discovered in salt mines and caves throughout Eastern Europe. DRESS COMFORTABLY AND JUST BREATHE Are you ready to chill? Simply leave your cares at the door, kick back and relax in the soothing, tranquil surroundings of a salt room, where comfy clothing, a good book (ready to catch up on your summer reading?), and soothing music are the only requirements. In this pristine place, walls and

most furnishings are covered in crystalized salt. You’ll rest comfortably in a lounge chair as a halogenator releases fine powder ground pure salt into the air. To reap the full benefits of each 45-minute session—all you need to do is breathe… just breathe. Health note: Two to three sessions per week over a three-month period should give you the greatest benefit. BETTER THAN A DAY AT THE BEACH We love the salty smell of beach air, but, here in the tranquility and comfort of your own salt room, you’ll experience all the health benefits of that beach day—breathing in salty fresh air, rejuvenating the skin and bringing out your most youthful healthy glow. What you won’t have: the pain of sunburn, getting sand in your face, people screaming. Nice. SOUND SLEEP AND LOTS OF ENERGY What’s more, salt therapy promises a better night’s rest, gives your immune system a kick and enhances your overall wellness. The long term effects of breathing the air in a salt room can improve lung function, which means you’ll have greater stamina for running, biking and all kinds of physical fitness … and it may even help jump start your sex life! Jessi Powell, owner of The Salt Box in Parkland, Fla., along with husband Brian, summed up the salt therapy experience best when she said: “Each session provides a way to unplug and escape one’s busy life—to just be in the moment and relieve any stress or tension.”

If you’re lucky enough to escape to a spa this summer, why not skip traditional massages and facials and try something new… halotherapy. Or not so new. Also called natural salt treatments, these therapies have been used for centuries for beauty, medicinal and other purposes. A natural indulgence, post use, your body will feel exhilarated, your face noticeably tighter and smoother and your energy levels off the charts.

The day I couldn’t stop smiling!
put your best foot &
smile forward
E
BY DR. CLIVE BO N ER A N D D R. ELI FR I ED M A N
very day we find ourselves immersed in a steady stream of engagement. Whether we are reaching out to friends and family through a new post on our favorite social media or engaging in oneon-one interactions within the business world, we are constantly finding ourselves entangled in one form of communication or another. And a majority of these interactions start with, you guessed it…your smile. In order for us to communicate effectively, we need to be confident in what we have to say. This can be difficult if you have insecurities about your teeth and your smile. If you have a chipped or missing tooth, you may be more inclined to hold in a smile or limit facial expression during a conversation. These may seem like small, unimportant notes, but a lack of confidence can be easily noticeable, and may even overshadow an otherwise great interaction.
Dental services from a prosthodontist can be a very effective way to restore that confidence, and put you right back in the position of being comfortable with any opportunity to chat (or snap) that may come your way. If you find yourself in a big meeting with a client or enjoying a first date with a special someone, you want to make sure that you are putting your best foot (and smile) forward! “Patients who want to improve their smile appreciate having access to a full compliment of smile enhancing procedures like veneers, crowns or bridges,” says Dr. Clive Boner of Palm Beach Dental Specialists. “Advances in implant technology and minimally invasive surgery give us the ability to replace failing or missing teeth in just one visit. This means you can enjoy a brighter, healthier smile the moment you leave our office.” Prosthodontic practices like Palm Beach Dental Specialists can determine if a patient would benefit from these services in one visit. Contact us today for more information or to arrange a free consultation.

sex&meds When you combine sexual function with medication they aren’t always BEST friends BY LOU PAG E T, A AS ECT, C. S. E .
As a Certified Sex Educator and Best Selling Author I am often asked questions about issues with sexual function: “I have no libido”, “I have no sensation, my ___ feels dead,” and the everpopular, “I can’t orgasm anymore.” Many times, I find the reason is tied to medications people are taking. In other words: Their meds are killing their intimacy and sex lives. Add to this the issue of Polypharmacy—defined as the use of multiple medications by a patient—the number for a poly label is variable from five to 20. Important too, is that along with the number of prescription meds, over the counter (OTC) and herbal supplements be included in this number. Why? Because as we age, metabolic changes increase the risk for drug-to-drug interactions. So, you may be taking a beta-blocker to lower heart pressure, which may lead to depression so you get an anti-depressant medication, which you probably don’t need.
ANTI-DEPRESSANTS Typically prescribed for depression, the many different kinds of antidepressants can be prescribed for chronic pain, obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders and even eating disorders. And how do they impair such a broad range of sexual function? Because they act to block the action of three brain chemical signals: acetylcholine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Anti-depressants can have the following impacts on sexual function: loss of libido, inability to orgasm, inability to ejaculate and genital anaesthesia (no sensation). Now here’s the kicker—weaning off the meds does not mean you will return to your original function. For more than 30 percent, the impacts are permanent. Options: lower doses and or find non-drug therapies.
STATINS AND FIBRATES Used to treat high cholesterol. Cholesterol is at the top of the pyramid in our Human Steroid Hormone cascade, in other words, every sex hormone’s production flows down from it and is dependent on there being enough cholesterol. Statins limit the liver’s production of cholesterol’s availability likely resulting in lowered estrogen, testosterone and other sex hormones. Lower hormones lower sex drive and lower orgasmic function. Statins also cause rhabdomyolysis, the breakdown

of muscle tissue leading to joint and leg pain. And if your legs and joints hurt, sex is likely down on the list. A non-statin option, according to Armon Neel, PharmaD CGP for those without coronary disease can be a combination of Vitamin B supplements.
BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONS The eight different categories of these meds all work to reduce blood pressure inside the vessels. Admittedly, high blood pressure itself can lead to sexual impairments, however studies show how many of these drugs have sexual side effects. Three categories of blood pressure medications with the highest incidence of side effects: diuretics (water pills), beta-blockers and alpha-blockers. For women, the decreased blood flow can lead to drop in desire, vaginal dryness and inability to orgasm; for men difficulties with erections, ejaculation and reduced desire. So what can you do? Have a conversation with a knowledgeable pharmacist or physician on options.
H2 BLOCKERS H2 Blockers a.k.a. H2-receptor antagonists are used to treat GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), peptic ulcers, gastric ulcers and erosive esophagitis. H2 blockers can cause breast enlargement as well as impotence in men when taken over long periods of time and at high doses. According to Armon Neel, PharmD, Tagamet (Cimetidine) is associated with a wider range of sexual side effects than other H2 blockers, including Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine), and Axid (nizatidine). Want to play
tennis? Here are some great ways to get started!
Growing up, I was always into sports…mostly intramurals though, as we did not have too many girls’ sports teams when I was in high school. Through cheerleading, and watching as many professional sporting events as I could, during the cold winters with my dad was what got me interested in putting my athletic skills to the test. But there was that one sport I always wanted to learn to play and learn to play well. That was tennis. I had played on and off during my 20’s, took it a little more serious after I got married, but it was when I turned 45 and realized that I needed to exercise on a regular basis that I decided that tennis was going to be my exercise of choice. Nine years ago we began a regimen of playing at least 3-4 days each week. This year I am participating in a summer league. I talk to so many people about the benefits of playing tennis and we all agree: the cardio, the competition, and most important, the friendships that are made are some of the main reasons we play. But the next question that usually gets asked is how did you get started playing? My standard answer to that question is, “There are many ways.”
Park, Tennis Center or Country Club Living in Florida, we are so fortunate to have many opportunities to learn to play tennis. County Parks and Recreation departments with tennis facilities as part of their park activities offer tennis lessons for youth, beginner, intermediate and advanced players. Most of the courts in our area are either clay or hard courts, which gives you the choice of playing on a surface that will best adapt to your game and body condition. If you have bad knees, aches and pains, pick clay as your surface...if you are still somewhat agile and like a fast game, then hard courts are your choice. In addition to lessons, sign up for group clinics where specific shot drills are taught and provide you with another way to get involved and learn how to perfect your serve or drop shots like the pros. Many country clubs work to recruit their residents to get involved in tennis leagues, which if you love competition, is a great way to you involved on their club teams. This is a great way to start building friendships which tennis is known to do.

Watch on TV Tennis is fortunate enough to have a cable channel dedicated to the sport 24/7. Not only does the Tennis Channel cover all tournaments worldwide for the ATP World Tour, (the governing body of the men’s professional tennis circuits) along with select tournaments for the Woman’s Tennis Association; clinics, tennis tips, nutritional suggestions, tennis history and tennis travel are all featured shows that are part of their daily programming. You can visit tennischannel.com anytime to see a schedule of the daily shows that include current matches, sport specific updates and interviews with players past and present. If you are tennis fan, this is one channel you will love to watch.
Go see a professional tournament LIVE! We are so lucky to have such a strong tennis association in the United States and specifically in Florida. The USTA National Campus – an all-inclusive home for every level of American tennis, recently relocated from New York, to Lake Nona (just outside of Orlando) ensuring the continual development for tennis in the United States. This facility will help merge American tennis at various levels; for the first time player, those interested in league play, super seniors, bigshot juniors, college players, and lets not forget our talented professional players on the ATP and WTA tours. There are many professional tournaments in the US (9 for woman, 11 for men) to go see your favorite players such as Rafa, Venus and Serena up close and live in action. If you have never had the opportunity to experience live
tennis, I can assure you this is one sport where one shot can change the entire momentum of the match. The speed that the ball travels, the focus and precision of the player shots, there is nothing like being part of the match – in the middle of the action, that will make you want to go out on the courts and try hitting on your own. One of the largest and most historic Grand Slam tournaments takes place in Flushing Meadows, New York every year for two weeks during late August/early September. Watch tennis under the bright lights of the big city for this historic event – the US Open. Every March two combined Men’s and Woman’s Masters 1000 level hard court tournaments – also two weeks long – take place in Indian Wells, California and Miami, Florida. Whether you prefer the desert heat and mountain skylines and attend the BNP Paribas Open or the Latin flair and Ocean breezes of the Miami Open you will be sure to see the top players of the sport – both men and woman at these great events. I have personally attended both and they remain on top of my sports spectator experiences! Tennis is a huge part of my life and a sport that after all of these years of wanting to play, I do … as often as I can. I may not be as fast as I was when I was in my 20’s, but it’s never to late to start. If you have always thought about getting involved with tennis as a player or as a fan, hopefully my story will put you in the right direction. Stay tuned for additional experiences I have experienced through being involved in tennis in upcoming issues of Fabulously50.

Q& A with cover model Lydia Martinez Creative Director, Carlos Marrero sits with Lydia Martinez to give us scoop behind beauty.
Fabuously50: WHAT DO YOU DO? Lydia Martinez Ebling: I am the CEO and founder
of Metabolic Method and co-founder of the MM Academy, which is a complete online health and weight loss coaching system and certification program. Metabolic Method focuses on four phases: reducing inflammation, balancing hormones (which is critical for weight loss), supporting metabolic muscle and building a confident mindset.
Fab50: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? LME: Helping women to show up the best version of their
self. Strong women just have a certain vibe about them, and emanate confidence and assertiveness wherever they go. At the same time many women don’t take care of themselves.
So my mission is “education” and integration of the HELO wearable technology in to their lifestyle to improve their heart and health statistics. Cardiovascular diseases and stroke cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The HELO wearable device monitors aspects of the user’s heart health around the clock in real time including heart rate, breathe, beats and the activity of your heart, plus much more. It gives a sense of safety and control over their own health—but also allows their loved ones and family members to take a more observant role in their care as well. To make a positive impact on the health of others, I’ve learned that we need to make it easy to do the right thing. That means having something that regularly gives you feed back. Awareness is the key to better choices and disease prevention. To learn more about Lydia, her businesses, services and products, visit www.fitlifewithus.com, www.lydiamartinez.com and www.metabolicmethodacademy.com.

Fab50: WHAT ARE THREE TIPS ON HOW TO STAY IN SHAPE AT 50? LME: Being healthy or “fit” doesn’t stop at the physical. How healthy and fit you are (and feel) is a product of your overall well-being. For me it’s a combination of five different aspects: sense of purpose, financial security, pouring into others, taking care of me and then physical health. But to stay fit three things I always make sure I do: 1. I have a green drink with breakfast that consists of kale, spinach, chard, green apple and celery. 2. I take a blend of amino acids, turmeric and liver support every night before bed. 3. I strive to get in 10,000 steps or more a day above and beyond my strength training or cardio workout. It’s so true that “a body in motion stays in motion”.
5 BEST SPAS
Fabulously50’s writer, Nikol Johnson-Sanchez searches for—and finds—her Zen BY N IKOL J OHN SON -SAN CHE Z
Looking for the right treatment in the ideal spa to help you achieve your own personal “Nirvana” can get a little confusing. So what’s a girl to do? Fabulously50 writer, Nikol Johnson-Sanchez took matters into her own hands. She experienced five sought-after spa treatments in five fabulous spas in locations throughout South Florida. Here’s her “must-try” list…
1 ACQUALINA SPA BY ESPA Recommended Treatment: Himalayan Salt Stone Massage Cost/Time: $175 for 50 minutes; $250 for 80 minutes The Treatment: Breathe in—aromatherapy fills your lungs and deep relaxation begins—you’re in the Acqualina Spa. A ritual hot tea and a cold lavender-soaked towel welcomed me. LED lighting in the steam room, balancing chakras, an ice fountain that zaps your circulation into shape … a little slice of spa heaven. Choose a 50- or 80-minute anti-inflammatory, therapeutic full-body treatment. The moment the hot salt stones touched my body, I fell into a trance. Aromatherapy oils and warm Himalayan salt stones relieved deep muscle tension, while the accumulation of stress, tension and pollutants were gently soothed away, leaving my body rejuvenated and my mind, body, and spirit balanced. Additional benefits include improved sleep and a heightened sense of well-being. Spa Overview: I enjoyed numerous amenities Acqualina Spa offered—from the crystal steam rooms to relaxing in the Himalayan Salt Wall lounge area. The Experiential showers (that include cold
30
arctic and warm Caribbean mists) topped off my delicious day. Insider Tip: Bring your bathing suit to enjoy the private spa pool. Lavender cookies in the spa relaxation room are not to be missed.
2 THE BREAKERS HOTEL & RESORT Recommended Treatment: Orchidee Imperial Black Guerlain facial Cost/Time: $350/80 minutes The Treatment: I booked the exclusive Guerlain facial treatment, which is like the gym for your face—lots of toning and tightening— but also yielding radiant skin. Hoping my face would be up for the challenge, I entrusted my esthetician, Grace, to firm and tone my skin to perfection. The plush esthetic bed with down comforter and dim lights got my treatment off to a great start. Classical music played as I drifted off. Double cleansing, toning, extracting and a lymphatic drainage facial massage to redefine my facial contours took years off my face! I got all that—and a foot massage, too! Then, a cool jade stone rolled in upward strokes on my cheeks toned, de-puffed and tightened my skin. My dull complexion glowed. Hydration was mine! Too bad the gym isn’t this easy. Spa Overview: At the Breakers Spa, you’ll find everything plush, white and sophisticated. A place where time doesn’t exist, flowers bloom, bubbly water walls dance and your stress dissipates with each step. Insider Tip: For a healthy meal, grab lunch at the Beach Club restaurant right outside the spa. I indulged in the rotisserie chicken salad sandwich with Old Bay fries.
3 CASBAH SPA Recommended Treatment: Tropical Citrus Pedicure Cost/Time: $95 for 80 minutes Treatment/Spa Overview: Looking for an urban oasis? Check out Casbah Spa, located in the heart of Fort Lauderdale. I had to get my toes in shape for late summer soirees so I booked the 80-minute Tropical Citrus pedicure knowing my feet needed all the time they could get. My technician, Anita, soaked my feet in a bath of citrus and aromatherapy oils. I felt like my soles had been reborn—and this was just the soak! Fresh lemons, limes, and oranges were used to cleanse my feet. Then, feet and calves were exfoliated with gritty citrus sea salt scrub followed by a warm paraffin mask. But wait … a 30-minute foot massage using citrus body butter cream was the final step. And to complete my overall experience…sorbet.
4 SPA 66 AT HYATT PIER 66 Treatment: 80-Minute Couples Massage in Private Suite Cost/Time: $425 for 80 minutes with 30-minute Hydro Bath The Treament: Spa 66, located in the Hyatt Pier 66 hotel is a unique boutique-style spa that evokes luxury and creates memorable journeys. Book a treatment and stay an hour or for the entire day. Looking for a spa and salon that offers holistic and petrochemical-free treatments? You found it. I booked a Couples massage. Spa for one is nice but when you can indulge together, even better. My husband and I started our treatments in a private suite with a chakra balancing Jacuzzi tub. Salt scrub and body mud mask were placed next to the tub, inviting us to play. After relaxing in the tub, we hit the private shower. Our massage therapists entered—time for the ultimate hot stone massage. We drifted off as our muscles were lavished with warm oils and hot stones. Once the Tibetan chimes rang, we came back to consciousness. Insiders Tip: Spend the entire day at the resort enjoying the tranquility spa lounge, steam, sauna and hydrotherapy pool.
5 BLISS SPA Recommended Treatment: The “Youth as We Know It” Facial Cost/Time: $195 Spa Overview: Bliss Spa says: “Tension mounts, stubble sprouts. Polish chips. Zits happen.” Unlike any other, from its upbeat non-spa music to its famous brownie bar, Bliss Spa is designed to be fun, colorful and uplifting. I booked “The Youth as We Know it Facial” because, hey, I’m not getting any younger. This turn-back-time (yes, think Cher) targets tone, elasticity, volume, fine lines and wrinkles, not just on your face but down to your décolleté. As I entered the facial room and slipped into the heated bed, I was ready to look 10 years younger. The treatment began with a warm towel and energizing ginseng and vitamin B3 cleanser. Next, my face was exfoliated with an enzyme peel from a Japanese mushroom that creates no burning sensation. Painless extractions and a high-tech collagen mask that provided antioxidant action brightened and clarified my skin. I was surprised with the amount of massage (from my arms to my feet) that came with this facial. Since I was determined to bring out my youthful glow, I added on the energizing vitaminized oxygen spray to give my skin that something extra. Insider Tip: If you’re looking to decompress after a hectic day, book “The Youth as We Know It Night treatment”. This adds an extended massage, night cream application and milk and brownies to help you (and your wrinkles) relax.

Dr.Riobe
Introducing Your GO-TO Health Columnist!
Who better to answer all of your health questions than a Board Certified Medical Doctor who uses integrative techniques that get to the root of your problem?
The ZEN method is something Dr. Riobe stands by, and she shares her first of many key tips with Fabulously 50 readers:
34
Z stands for lots of zzzz’s! Sleep is a must for any healthy lifestyle so I make sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. If I don’t get adequate sleep, I make sure to make up for it either by sleeping in or taking a nap when I can.
E stands for exercise! Despite my busy lifestyle, I work out three to four times a week primarily lifting weights. It’s critical to warm up and stretch before lifting weights to avoid injuries. Injuries cause major setbacks and should be avoided! Joints should be warmed up and gently stretched until no “snaps, crackles or pops” are felt or heard! If you’ve not had a regular exercise regimen, be sure to get clearance from your doctor then hire a qualified personal trainer before getting started. I do a small amount of cardio for 20” after workouts at a mild pace to blow off any lactic acid buildup. I also use my cardio time to focus on breathing. Excessive cardiovascular training, especially for women, is a draining activity and causes loss of muscle mass and bone density. My combined weight training and cardio workout lasts no more than an hour. I believe that conservation of muscle mass is the key to looking great, remaining
young and staying healthy! This means lifting moderately heavy weights and pushing myself in every workout. Using proper form and varying types of workouts is also important to assure symmetry and balance. I make sure to focus on two muscle groups per workout, that way I cycle through my whole body by the end of each week. “Use it or lose it” is a critical mantra in weight lifting!
N stands for nutrition! A proper nutrition regimen is the cornerstone to maintaining muscle mass and good health. I eat 6 times daily. Three of these meals are full meals of 200-250 calories each. They consist of 25-30 grams of protein, 20-25 grams of carbohydrates, leafy and cruciferous veggies and a small amount of good fat (such as a tablespoon of olive oil to cook my veggies). My other three meals consist of a clean source of protein with minimal carbs and fat such as a clean, lean protein shake.
Muscles need lots of protein to grow! I eat lean sources of protein like grass fed organic beef; organic poultry, wild caught safe fish, cage free organic eggs, and organic protein shakes. Although vegetable based protein sources are good, I don’t find

Dr. Mylaine Riobe was raised in the Big Apple and attended high school in Poughkeepsie, NY. A true athletic effigy, she was a high school sports all-star, playing volleyball, softball and basketball. In fact, young Mylaine was the first basketball player in school history to score 1000 points and pull down 500 rebounds. In turn, she was selected the Poughkeepsie Journal Player of the Year senior year and selected to the All-NY State team. Academic All American and member of the National Honors’ Society, Mylaine was recruited by Columbia University to play basketball. Remarkably, she remained an avid athlete throughout college, medical school and residency training. As an accomplished Board Certified Medical Doctor and Director of the Riobe Institute of Integrative Medicine, Dr. Riobe still found the time to prioritize her own health. Notably, she competed in figure competitions, even winning first place in the Gina Osterly show 6 months after having her daughter. Now as a single mom of two great kids and the owner of a solo integrative medical practice, Dr. Riobe states, “I have always believed that putting myself first is the most important thing I can do so I can be more for my family and patients. I call this ‘self-care’, which is often confused with ‘selfish’. It’s critical to know the difference. My regimen is a combination of a spiritual practice and a material practice (body). I call it my ‘ZEN method’.
“Our approach to medical care should be the prevention of diseases, NOT prevention of death from diseases.” that they are as effective to maintain muscle mass, but they are still great for your health. I eat about 1 to 1.5 gram of protein per pound of lean body weight daily, divided, into my 6 meals. This averages to 25-30 grams per meal. Muscles also need carbohydrates to function and recover from a workout, so I make sure to time my work out to follow one of my main meals that contain carbohydrates and I also have a light meal after my workout that contains a carbohydrate source. Eating consistently is absolutely essential, too-that helps keep your metabolism cranking on all cylinders. I learned that valuable lesson from my weight training coach. I eat every 3 hours during the day (5-6 meals daily). I consume about 1200-1400 calories daily. When your metabolism is on fire, you can enjoy a few of those potato chips or that chocolate lava cake without a care in a world! Another secret is when you nail down a sound nutrition regimen, you don’t crave a lot of junk. I drink 64 oz room temperature water daily. Ice water or cold water stunts digestive function and should be avoided. I compliment my diet with great high quality supplements that I determine. In today’s society, it’s hard to find healthy food sources while maintaining the variety you need to avoid nutrient deficiencies, so supplements are a must. However, it can be tricky, so I only use the best quality supplements that have been through proper cellular testing. This helps fill in any gaps I may have in my nutrition. I also meditate at least once daily for 20”. Deep breathing and relaxation is what starts my day off in a good direction. You become what you think so a positive attitude and laughter are some of my biggest secrets to good health.

Bohemıan Fab. 50’s creative director, Carlos Marrero sits down Project Runway alumni Amanda Perna for an exclusive interview.

I
met Amanda Perna at a fabulous charity event in Delray Beach two years ago. We immediately clicked; we chat often about life, business and - of course - fashion. Many people know Amanda from Project Runway (Season 14), but don’t really know who she is and what she’s about. Amanda started her career in fashion as an intern for Oscar de la Renta and moved on to become a dress designer for Calvin Klein. After working in New York for half a decade, Amanda realized she missed the beach, the sun and the whimsical style of her South Florida youth. New York had taught Amanda a lot, but the lines were straight, the colors were often drab and the fashion - overall - could be stark in contrast to Amanda’s colorful view of the world. A South Florida native, Amanda loves bold colors and a more glam version of the bohemian vibe, so popular today. When Amanda first launched her collection, The House of Perna, she struggled with the harsh juxtaposition of these two competing aesthetics. It took her a long time to get the balance right, but when she figured it out, she knew she
was onto something. Palm Beach Bohemian, she calls it. The blend of free-flowing, airy, comfort-driven silhouettes with the ornate, posh, gilded decor of the Palm Beach Regency design movement. It’s the juxtaposition of the two aesthetics that creates the vibe. Though rarely seen in an actual hat, Amanda is a woman that wears many: celebrity stylist, working on sets and wardrobe for major international commercials; textile designer, creating prints for her own collections as well as collaborating with other brands including Hallmark and Basler; personality, appearing as an expert on news segments, and hosting events at major department stores including Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus; and fashion designer, developing clothing, handbags and accessories for The House of Perna. Amanda believes women of all ages are beautiful and should be able to feel beautiful and have fun with their wardrobe. She helps her celebrity and socialite clients achieve this feeling with custom couture fashion and, with The House of Perna, Amanda strives to give each of her customers that feeling.
The House of Perna is launching a brand new ready-to-wear collection dedicated to using this Palm Beach Bohemian aesthetic to achieve these ideals. Perna’s handbags and accessories are made in collaboration with domestic and global artisans, specifically chosen for their experience and expertise in their crafts. But the clothing helps Amanda fulfill the other part of her mission, bringing jobs to the local community. The House of Perna’s custom and ready-to-wear collections are all designed and manufactured in Palm Beach County. Amanda believes in supporting growth and helping others reach their full potential; since returning to South Florida, she has mentored more than 30 girls. In addition to designing new collections for The House of Perna, Amanda is also launching a blog (The Palm Beach Bohemian), a YouTube channel (The Amanda Perna) and working on a book about her experiences in the fashion world and the Palm Beach Bohemian aesthetic she has come to love. Amanda’s style and designs are the epitome of the phrase. Amanda Perna is the Palm Beach Bohemian. FABULOUSLY50.COM 23

eal Plan. Grocery Shop. Cook. “What’s for dinner tonight?” is the question we face from behind the morning paper (or tablet!) every morning. Which brings us to the alternative answer: “I’ve already ordered our meals for the week and they’ll be delivered today.” Introducing instant gratification via “meal kits”. Conversation has turned from what we shop for at the grocery store to what sites we order from online. For many, it’s a step away from the known into the unknown, but as our days become filled with more (and more) to do, ordering ingredients that comprise a complete meal that takes mere minutes to prepare, and includes instructions, and is nutritious, is the answer to our prayers! Meal kits – those pre-measured, presliced, pre-balanced, and pre-packaged boxes of ingredients take the thought out of what we’re having for dinner tonight—and every night. A concept that started in Europe in 2007, the meal kit industry’s poised to push the $5 billion mark by 2020, according to the Goldman Sachs research arm. And it’s no wonder, given all you do is go online, click meals that interest you and voila—a box arrives on your doorstep. Meal kits are tailored to your tastes. You’re guaranteed a well-balanced, nutrient-enriched meal that satisfies your pocketbook and tummy! Some maybe messy in the kitchen, but that’s part of the fun! A fad you say? Not according to a 2016 Harris Poll. One in four adults purchased a meal kit in 2016; 70 percent of those were re-ordering. Highquality ingredients and convenience were deciding factors in choosing to purchase meal kits. Nutritional information can be sketchy with some companies; sodium levels can be high. While recipes call for a dash of salt here and there—be aware—you just might be adding to an already high sodium content. Taste, then shake. Meal kit companies are coming onto the market every day – 150 in
the United States as of 2016. Most promote quality ingredients and creative menus; introductory offers abound. It’s easy to work your subscription to suit your lifestyle; try different companies until you find one that suits your tastes. With calorie counts hovering around 500, meal kits are ideal for weight control. Enjoy a glass of wine with your meal? Some companies offer winefor-two at reasonable prices, others offer wine-pairing suggestions. All you need are the proper wine glasses.

“Food is better when you start from scratch” is Blue Apron’s motto, but we’ve known that since the days we cooked in grandma’s kitchen. Blue Apron is not your traditional meat and potatoes meal kit producer. Their menus are creative, and geared to the Bon Appetit crowd. (Barramundi? Freekeh salad? Mafalda pasta?) The recipes are easy to follow and the photos that accompany the instructions are helpful. The food and wine notes add an extra dimension to the experience. All you have to do is pay, prepare and clean. Everything else is done for you. Meals start at 8.99/serving. www.blueapron.com
Peach Dish
Peach Dish was the first meal kit site that had an understandable story—one that was not written in business-plan speak! It’s story is intriguing, setting the tone for what you’re getting in your box. Like the others, the food is sourced locally, mostly in the south as they’re an Atlanta company. Be it dinner parties, holiday meals or everyday meal delivery, Peach Dish will accommodate customers’ needs. They also recommend wine selections. A unique suggestion from the site: use Peach Dish as a gift. Prices start at $12.50/serving. www.peachdish.com Can’t get enough? Try Carb-focused Gobble or Martha Stewart’s Marley Spoon. Whether you try one or all of the meal kit delivery companies, your reward will be you don’t have to think about what to make for dinner. That alone is worth the price. Jann Seal is a “home cook” whose blog, www.ifyoucanreadyoucancookblog.com has gathered a substantial following. Her soon-to-be-published cookbook will soon follow. Jann enjoys turning sophisticated recipes into simple meals and loves the logic of food preparation and teaching novice cooks about the wonders of the kitchen. She can be considered a card-carrying “foodie!”

LET WYNWOOD WIN YOU OVER For those of us who live North of Broward county, Miami seems a world away. It’s almost like visiting a foreign land. The good news is that most of us love to travel. And more good news is that it’s closer than Europe. The bad news is that many of us would rather hop a plane and fly to Europe before driving down there. But every now and then, something happens—you’re inspired, you’re bored, you just feel like doing something different—but what to do? You can drive for hours to spend a day in the Keys, you can head to South Beach to spend a day on the beach, or you can try take that same trip South, to the Design District and into one of the most interesting areas in town—Wynwood. Wynwood consists of three sub-districts: Wynwood Art District (in northern Wynwood), Wynwood Technology District and Wynwood Fashion District (which sits along West 5th Avenue), encompassing approximately 50 blocks. Wynwood is filled with galleries, restaurants, retail shops, event venues, bars, and nightclubs, but more than anything, there’s art. Brilliant, vibrant art. Everywhere. But it wasn’t always like this. While it’s currently enjoying status as a thriving arts and cultural scene, Wynwood’s had its ups and downs. It’s history dates back to the 19-teens, when partners Josiah Chaille and Hugh Anderson took out the first plat of land in 1917 in what they called Wyndwood. Months later the city of Miami built a park in the northern end and called it Wynwood Park, dropping the “d” from its name. Soon thereafter, residents dropped the “Park” and simply called it what it is today—Wynwood. For many years, Wynwood belonged to the working class. American Bakeries Company, Coca-Cola, Orange Juice, all had plants here. In the 1950s, many Puerto Ricans immigrated from Puerto Rico and northeastern cities, settling into the Miami neighborhood to open restaurants, markets, shops and other businesses. The 1960s saw Wynwood’s fashion district begin to flourish. Manufacturers and retailers worked side-by-side right into the ’80s to make this the third largest garment district in the US. Wholesalers-retailers accounted for approximately $64 million in sales. But everything is cyclical and over time the neighborhood changed. People

began moving away, businesses closed and buildings were left to fall to ruin. It became a playground for drug dealers and all things “unsavory”. It was completely unsafe to walk outside, especially after dark. It was not until the millennium that the city truly began showing signs of life again, when investors started taking interest. Revitalization began. Visionary Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties knew there was more to Wynwood then decay and despair. He began buying large chunks of property in the warehouse district in 2006, in the hopes of creating a gigantic urban canvas to satisfy his love of art. He continued his crusade to improve Wynwood, this time looking to create an open-air gallery filled with murals. Art Basel, which had come to Miami a few years prior, had grown wildly and needed more space. With Wynwood in the throes of gentrification, it was only natural for the fair’s expansion to work its way up from South Beach and in December 2009, Wynwood Walls (2520 NW 2nd Ave.; 305-531-4411; thewynwoodwalls.com) burst onto the scene to coincide with that year’s Art Basel celebration. Still here now, Wynwood Walls is literally a garden of murals and works of art from local and not-so-local artists. Stop into Wynwood Kitchen & Bar (2550 NW 2nd Ave., 305-722-8959, wynwoodkitchenandbar. com) to have a bite with your art. Check out the 11-foot-tall multicolored man sculpture, futuristic and panoramic canvas’ in the dining room, and in the bar area, a floor-to-ceiling mural made by renown street artist, Shepard Fairey. While there’s something to do in Wynwood almost every single day, aim your day trip for a Saturday. And if possible, try for the second Saturday in the month. If you do, you’ll be rewarded with Wynwood Art Walk - Second Saturdays. On this day, the streets and galleries come alive at 6pm (so plan to stay for dinner). You’ll be treated to art openings, delicious food at local restaurants and shopping! As a matter of fact, there are approximately 400 businesses that are at the heart of Wynwood, and while it has come a long way, many—strike that—most open their doors to the public long after they should be done with their days.

On Sundays, check out Reggae Sundays, 4-11pm at the Wynward Yard (56 NW 26th St, 305-351-0366; facebook.com/ thewynwoodyard/), a cool new communal space for restaurants, events, music, fitness, and more. While your there, taste cool culinary concepts at Della Test Kitchen, (305-351-2961; dellabowls. com) which serves “bowls”; quick, easy, healthy and customizable. Do you like grilled food? Than try Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill at the Wynwood Yard (82 NW 29th St., 786-646-2998; charcoalmiami. com), where just about everything is grilled. But here comes the cool part—it’s the only restaurant in the country to be made entirely of modified shipping containers. Places are a bit spread out in Wynwood, so expect to do a lot of walking. Coyo Taco (2300 NW 2nd Ave.; 305-573-8228; coyo-taco. com) serves authentic Mexican. The tacos are to-die-for. There are more than a dozen delicious types including grilled cactus. Wash it down with a margarita and that’s one tasty meal. Second Avenue is one street that has retail comingling with restaurants. Before you head home, stop into Panther Coffee (305-677-3952, 2390 NW 2nd Avenue; panthercoffee.com), a Miami-based specialty coffee roaster. Naturally, you’re invited to sit in the outdoor area to sketch, write, and take in more art while sipping coffee. Foodies generally like to buy from locals and Wynwood Farmer’s Market (196 NW 24th Street, 305-479-7263; thewynwoodfarmersmarket.com) gives us the right stuff. Not too big, this market features locals and their wares such as artisan bread, locally grown fresh veggies and fruit, homemade baked goods, gourmet prepared foods, and handmade decor, clothing, jewelry and more. There’s even live music and artisanal wine and beer. But don’t snack too much. If you’re going to dinner, Beaker & Gray (2637 N. Miami Avenue; 305-699-2637; beakerandgray.com) has a plethora of “good stuff” to eat. B&G turns the most typical foods into something special. But seriously, with so much to do in Wynwood, why wouldn’t you visit? So the next time you feel like doing something different, head down. You’ll be glad you did.

Let it pass without media hype for the sake of mass marketing and profiteering, only to be forgotten about amongst today’s fads, fashions and self-indulgent egos. It seems that it’s the least you can do given the fact that Rock & Roll has given us The King (of rock, not pop), Chuck Berry, The Beatles, Bob Dylan— the list is way too big to detail here.
CK GUITAR AND STARS: SHUTTERSTOCK; RECORD: ADOBE STOCK IMAGES
OLL One can take comfort with the knowledge that Rock & Roll lived for a very respectable 50+ years, which I suspect will be longer than the genres featured in the current music scene. Rock & Roll has provided us with the soundtrack representing many generations. It was nice while it lasted. Rock & Roll gave us the freedom to express ourselves, to let our hair down or to cut it short. It gave us the freedom to do whatever we damn well wanted without the scrutiny of public pressure to have a certain “look.” But that “look” was cool, nonetheless. Rock & Roll taught us that music matters and can be the sobering voice of the world’s conscience just as easily as it can be the irrepressible expression of our carefree attitudes. Rock & Roll showed us that being cool was about soul and spirit, not wardrobe or bling. It was guitar riffs,
rhythm, chords, bass and the solos. Rock & Roll was about lyrics, poetry, heart and emotion. It was about peace, fun and love. It was about bitterness, loneliness and anger. It was about a generation of passion and hope. Rock & Roll provided us with protests that reflected the consciousness that changed public policy. Our music meant something to us Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers. Let’s face it—it meant everything! We listened to our favorite artists on vinyl and made the best Maxell mix tapes ever. (Remember record art and what that meant?) We read liner notes, jammed with air guitars and sang into our hair brushes. In all fairness, today’s popular music provides an avenue for aspiring artists to exhibit creativity that goes far beyond notes and riffs. In fact, these musicians need not necessarily require any ability to play an instrument. (Though I’m not naming names, you know who you are). We’ve learned over the past few decades that mixing, sampling and digitizing are big components in creating a hit that offers celebrity and fortune. The music world is now open far beyond the limits of just melodious greatness. Today’s artists are also beautiful – women and men. They’re all perfect. Perfect teeth. Perfect hair. Perfect clothes. Perfect bodies. Sadly, however, many of them lack the very soul about which they sing. It would be short-sighted not to recognize, though, that today’s pop music does feature some real talent. Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran and some other main stream artists do offer a refreshing combination of musicianship, vocal ability and some beautiful songs. And, while I may sound like an aging hippie stuck in the ’60s and ’70s, angry with what happened to pop culture, that’s okay with me. I have history on my side. The downside though is much of today’s music industry seems to resemble that of a Ford Motor auto plant, with an assembly line format, that churns out star after star, fully aware that staying power will be fleeting, likely with a shorter shelf life than an Edsel. Many people believe that the heart
of rock & roll’s first arrhythmia occurred, not with Disco (In retrospect, disco didn’t suck after all!), but rather when Eddie Van Halen performed a guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” in the early ’80s. Previously, the line drawn between rock and dance music was thought to be sacred. Crossing the line at that time resulted in an irreparable fracture. This collaboration blurred a line, never to be respected ever again. Run-DMC and Aerosmith’s collaboration on “Walk This Way” wasn’t far behind. While these associations proved to be very popular and produced great big hits, one couldn’t help but sense that the sale of rock & roll as a brand, would also be its undoing. So, what is the future of rock & roll’s legacy? The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducts extraordinary, accomplished musicians 25 years after their first record release. If one were to look at the past inductees, they’d see the names of rock & roll royalty. Future classes will get slimmer and slimmer unless the Hall changes its name to “The Pop Culture Music Hall of Fame”, and when that happens, it won’t be pretty. With so few new commercially successful artists in the marketplace, rock music will simply fade away leaving a memory as sentimental as a Frank Capra movie. I’ll always have my albums, cassettes and CDs—maybe even an 8-track. I’ll cherish the memories of my favorite bands and the concerts that I’ve attended. Their music will always be part of me. I’ll treasure the gifts that The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Allmans, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, U2, The Doors, The Dead, The Stones, The Who and many others have given to me. Rock & Roll may be dead, but its legacy will live on, so I say, “Let us never forget. ‘Rock is Dead,’ They Say! Long Live Rock!” Ira Kerner is a freelance writer, a father of college-bound twin daughters. BU LOUS FESTIV
The Garlic Festival, SunFest, Boca Wine and Food Fest, ArtiGras ... we could go on all day. The truth is that South Florida is a veritable smorgasbord for festivals. From Key West straight up to Stuart and beyond, there’s something happening just about any day of the year. Events can range from thousands of people to small, community-oriented events; one or multiple days, and the theme or purpose—the possibilities are endless. For Baby Boomers, festivals provide an opportunity to continue to enjoy the great outdoors, having fun and activities with friends and family. Besides the fun, benefits of festivals abound. Communities, consumers, exhibitors, producers—there’s something good for everyone. So no matter what your preference—food, wine, art, music, health, holidays or seasons—there’s something for you to enjoy. We live in the Sunshine State, which naturally provides many year-round opportunities for all kinds of festivals. As Dawn Reed, Event Director for The Winterfest Boat Parade in Fort Lauderdale says, “Festivals are a huge part of our culture in Florida. With great diversity, [festivals] highlight art and music with culinary thrown in the mix.” According to the Florida Festivals and Events Association’s (FFEA) survey of event and festival professional members, art festivals are the number one category, followed by holiday themed, food, wine, music and dance, heritage/ historical, fairs and others.
Winterfest Boat Parade…
Many festivals have humble beginnings such as Winterfest Boat Parade, which was started in 1971 by a small group of boaters wanting to bring the holiday spirit to the waterway. In 1988, Winterfest officially incorporated to bring attention and visitors to the area as well as to fill hotel rooms at offpeak times in Fort Lauderdale. It has been 46 years since the small group started the Winterfest Boat Parade. This joyous event has been a lifelong tradition for many and is now recognized both nationally—
and internationally—as one of the premier holiday attractions in Fort Lauderdale.

ArtiGras…
Russell Spadaccini had attended and participated in many food and wine festivals before deciding to bring his own events to Sandborne Square Park in Boca Raton. He produces the Boca Burger Battle Competition in July and the Boca Raton Wine and Food Festival in November. This kicks off “the season” in South Florida. The vibe of Spadaccini’s events is lowkey, upscale and full of exploration; where chill meets curiosity. If you’re a free-spirited foodie who craves adventure, then this festival is for you. With numerous opportunities to see, taste, learn, talk and experiment, this event and other food and wine events give people a chance—a reason—to taste flavors they may not be that familiar with and experience wines they may not know about or feel comfortable trying on their own. Here, as you take in the smells, flavors and textures, there’s always a chef, a producer, an expert on hand to educate, assist and help you to understand the nuances as well as the big picture. The result? People broaden their pallets while enjoying a fun and exciting social activity.
ArtiGras, a three-day art festival over President’s Day weekend in Abacoa (Jupiter, FL) attracts 50,000 visitors. That’s a huge difference from when it started in 1983 with a group of artists from the North Palm Beach Country Club who sold their artwork out of their trunks. Today, ArtiGras, which is produced by the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce, has a much larger footprint and offers not only juried art, pottery and jewelry, but lively entertainment, a variety of food options, a wine garden, artist demonstrations, as well as a charitable mission. Sounds great, right? But what about the crowds, the parking, the bathrooms … what a hassle! ArtiGras’ combats the negatives. It’s “Cool Down Zone” offers comfortable seating and water misters for chilling out; pristine restroom trailers provide a clean, spacious alternative to typical Porto-Jons. Many festivals offer upgraded options and VIP experiences. SunFest, Florida’s largest waterfront music and art festival, held annually in downtown West Palm Beach offers “Club SunFest,” where for one price, you can purchase access to special concert viewing areas with food, drinks, overnight chair storage and air-conditioned restrooms. Many events offer pre-paid parking, convenient shuttles and even bike valets. Always check the website for

Baby Boomers—An Important Target Market
South Florida festival producers know that the 50+ market is a vibrant market and vital to their success. According to Nancy Stewart-Franczak, CFEE, Festival
FABULOUSLY50.COM 73
Management Group, Inc., which produces several Palm Beach County events such as South Florida Garlic Fest and the Delray Affair says, “Baby boomers continue to be quite affluent, contribute a large amount to consumer spending and make up 70% of the nation’s disposable income and leisure travel.” Baby Boomers also tend to be nostalgic and music is a big part of that connection. To that end, music festivals, such as SunFest have included artists such as Steve Winwood, Christopher Cross and Ambrosia, in addition to current pop artists to attract the 50+ crowd.
Making Money for the Right Reasons
Fundraising for local charities is a huge part of today’s festivals. According to the FFEA, the average member organization donates more than $7,000 a year to charities and non-profit organizations. ArtiGras’ efforts benefit seven charitable partners including Quantum House and Kiwanis Club of Palm Beach Gardens. ArtiGras also has a program called “Recycling is an Art,” which is a unique way for local school art programs to win money for their classrooms, while promoting and learning about green efforts. The South Florida Garlic Festival, which will head into its 19th year in February is held at John Prince Park in Lake Worth. It engages 20 organizations and has contributed more than $610,000 back to these charities, to date.
“Festivals are always looking for volunteers.” 74
Fairs and festivals are such a big undertaking and are always looking for volunteers. For many of South Florida’s local events and festivals, it can take more than 1,000 volunteers to make it a success. Maybe you’re the type who enjoys getting involved and being a part of the excitement of an event. Or maybe you’re bored and looking for something new and exciting to get involved with. No matter what your reasoning, there are plenty of opportunities. Check websites of upcoming events in
your community and you may find something that piques your interest. It’s a great way to meet new people, put your experience to work or just do something new. But if “working the festival” is not your thing, those event websites you were just looking at will serve as a good guide as to what’s coming for you to attend. No matter what you choose, there is always something great to take away from the experience so get up, get involved— you’ll be glad you did.

There is always something happening in South Florida—and always something else coming ’round the bend. Be it new retail stores or luxury condos, hotel renovations or events to celebrate a city, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Dade counties are full of them. Here are a few new and noteworthy nuggets to quench your thirst… ALL ABOARD! Any moment now, Florida will have it’s first privately-owned, operated and serviced passenger rail—All Aboard Florida’s Brightline Train. The intercity train will connect Miami to Orlando with stops in between in Fort Lauderdale as well as in West Palm Beach. The entire journey from beginning to end will take three hours. While on board, guests can relax in comfy seats, tap into WiFi, enjoy food and drinks, and more. A much-needed new method of travel, Brightline promises to be effective, affordable and revolutionary; it seems to marry the old romance of train travel with all the modern conveniences necessary in the year 2017. www.feci.com/index.php THE FIRST-EVER BOCA RESTAURANT MONTH BEGINS… If you love dining out—and you like a good deal—then check out the inaugural Boca Restaurant Month. For 30 days, beginning September 1st, guests who dine at participating Boca-based eateries will have the option to order special prix fixe, three-course meals (lunch or dinner). Restaurant month’s theme is “Boca Loves New York”. Restaurants will create at least one NY-inspired dish and cocktail. Prices for lunch $21-$25; dinner $36-$40. Boca Restaurant Month runs September 1 – 30, 2017. www.bocarestaurantmonth.com 100 LAS OLAS REACHES NEW HEIGHTS … Construction is officially underway at 100 Las Olas, which will become the tallest building in Fort Lauderdale. According to Kolter, the developers, the project includes a 253-room Hyatt Centric hotel and 121 condo units. We hear that the individual units sell for $800,000 to $2 million. When all is said and done, the building will be 46 stories (a.k.a. 499 feet tall). Phew! That’s one tall structure. ITALY IN MIAMI… Looking for a cool destination to shop, snack, drink and dine? Both locals and visitors alike will have a blast working their way through Miami’s first major “food hall”, La Centrale Italian Food Hall at Brickell City Centre. Spanning three
floors, from the top down, the space will offer a wine shop and culinary school (3rd Floor); full service restaurants and gelato shop (2nd Floor); and a coffee shop/eatery and a market (ground level). Foodie’s may be thinking, “Hmmm. Sounds suspiciously like “Eataly”, the Mario Batali and Lydia Bastianich project in NYC. But after asking around, we’re assured that there’s no relation. La Centrale should be “ready” later this year. PALM BEACH: BREW 2 AT THE ZOO Like drinking locally made craft beer? How about saving animals? Here’s your opportunity to do both—at the same time. On September 16th, from 6pm – 9pm the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservatory will be hosting its Brew 2 at the Zoo. The event takes place inside the zoo, so you can mingle with friends—and furry friends—while tasting craft beer from 25 local producers. You’ll receive a lanyard to hold your mug while you eat delicious dishes made available to purchase from local restaurants. Stroll the scene to live music from Hot Java and enjoy. General Admission ($35), VIP ($65), and Designated Driver ($15) tickets are available. Designated Driver tickets denote 100% no drinking; VIP tickets entitle you to early entry (5:30PM) plus more. At the time of this writing, prices hadn’t yet been finalized so call or check the website for details. Each brewery will bring two or three brews, so, on a serious note, if you sample all of them your BAC will be 0.15, which is twice the legal limit so please, be sure to have a designated driver or arrange for an Uber. This is a 21 and over event. Have fun and stay safe. palmbeachzoo.org FABULOUSLY50.COM 77

KEMPINSKI GRAND HÔTEL DES BAINS St. Moritz, Switzerland
A small town with a big reputation, St. Moritz is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful mountain resorts. Its spectacular setting, glamorous boutiques, and grand hotels are world famous. Less familiar to today’s travelers is that the mineral springs of St. Moritz have attracted travelers for more than 3,000 years. St. Moritz was known to the Ancient Romans as a destination to soak in medicinal waters, which today are still enjoyed by modern Romans along with visitors from all over the world. Kempinski Grand Hôtel des Bains is the only five-star hotel in St. Moritz located in St. Moritz Bad (“bath” in German). A recent renovation has enlivened this classic European hotel; the friendly staff is unobtrusively on hand to assist guests. Even by Switzerland’s generous standards, room and suites at Kempinski Grand Hôtel des Bains are unusually spacious, as are the lobby, restaurant, spa, and pool. For families, friends, or corporate guests wanting the complete home away from home feeling, the Residences wing of the property provides luxurious apartments with full hotel services complemented by privacy and discretion. Kempinski Grand Hôtel des Bains is known for its baths and spa treatments. The highly mineralized water comes into the hotel directly from a pristine natural spring under the Alps; guests can bathe in it, of course, but there’s also a tap in the spa to drink it. The strong, invigorating taste is unlike anything else. Though water captures the most attention here, spa treatments abound and are first rate, too. The hotel’s swimming pool, backed by a rock wall, sets the tone of relaxation so highly sought after by guests here. St. Moritz is easily reached from Zurich Airport and other points across the country thanks to Switzerland’s excellent rail network, though Kempinski can arrange private transfers directly from the airport. That can be by helicopter, by car, or by train. Kempinski provides a complimentary transfer service from St. Moritz train station to the hotel, and there’s ample parking for those arriving in one of the supercars available through Switzerland’s Elite Rent A Car.

The Siam defines
2
THE SIAM Bangkok, Thailand
Behind the white wall fronting the street in Bangkok’s royal Dusit district is a private world of guest happiness and hotel brilliance. With so much hype and hyperbole, The Siam needs neither. This property instantly changed the definition of “luxury” in the Thai capital upon its opening in 2012, shifting Bangkok’s paradigm of accommodation excellence far higher. Five years on, The Siam continues to dazzle guests with beautiful suites, flawless service, and a stunning art collection. In a city full of five-star properties, The Siam sets itself apart with exceptional choices in accommodation such as pool villas the only accommodation of its type in Bangkok’s glamorous surroundings, an Opium Spa by Sodashi, and a boxing ring for guests to learn and practice the traditional Muay Thai style of boxing. The suites there are no ordinary rooms here. Actually, nothing at The Siam is ordinary will impress even the most jaded traveler. Decorated in a variety of themes, the suites of the main building are situated around an enormous atrium, while individual pool villas, with their stylish courtyards and private sundecks, offer individual sanctuaries of the highest quality. A traditional teak Thai house has been repurposed as a private dining room, but, the accommodation known as Connie’s Cottage allows guests to stay in a historic Thai house, discreetly embellished with all the modern conveniences expected by today’s urbane travelers. Downstairs is a living room filled with antiques; upstairs via an external staircase is the equally atmospheric bedroom. The cottage is named after its previous owner, legendary Thai espionage agent Connie Mangskau, one of the most gracious social hostesses Bangkok’s ever seen, frequently entertaining celebrities and members of the Thai monarchy with equal aplomb. It’s not all aesthetic contemplation at The Siam not with a full gym and a Muay Thai boxing ring providing guests with a venue for a physical challenge unlike those available at home. Muay Thai has taken off as a trendy activity for Western fitness fanatics, but at The Siam the sport is treated with the reverence it’s always been accorded in Thai culture. Travelers come from near and far to take part in the hotel’s boxing program. Making use of its private boxing ring, guests interested in
86
the sport or looking for an intense workout have the chance to exercise in one of the most luxurious resorts in the world. The boxing program is particularly popular with female visitors. A vigorous workout in a private setting devoid of the typically macho atmosphere of a boxing gym, which is replaced by attentive instructors focused on challenging the guest to develop skills and have a good time doing it … is ideal. Thai cuisine is regarded as one of the most delicious in the world and is at its best at The Siam. For those taking part in a boxing or exercise program, the kitchen prepares customized meals to match individual nutritional needs with no loss of flavor or enjoyment. The freshest of ingredients are used to create dining experiences far removed from the spartan, unappealing diets traditionally associated with athletic lifestyles. Customized programs may last from one day to one week or longer, as preferred. Spa treatments at the hotel’s Sodashi spa are also part of the program. Of course there’s a spa; rare is the five-star hotel in Thailand without one. The Siam’s spa is exceptional in its varieties of Thai and other styles of massage, which can be enjoyed in the main building, a sprawling, de facto museum where the priceless art and antiques collection of the hotel’s owners are on display. The Siam’s 25-meter riverside lap pool gives swimmers a place to freestyle themselves into a state of aerobic nirvana, perhaps further enhanced by a treatment in the spa afterward.

LE ROCH HOTEL & SPA Paris, France
Le Roch Hotel & Spa is less than a year old but already has a loyal clientele. It’s approach to hospitality is “casually luxurious”, an experience without the excesses and artifice that, at times, can come across as a bit too theatrical elsewhere in the city. As the hotel’s name indicates, spa treatments are important here. Parisians are merciless critics and spa aficionados can quickly make or break the reputation of an establishment. Le Roch’s use of Codage products has locals flocking to the hotel for a dab of cream and a rub of lotion. There’s only one treatment room in the Le Roch spa; this means the focus is on one client at any time. The

result: maximum privacy and personal attention. The spa at Le Roch is devoid of frippery and ostentation, focusing instead on the work at hand—making the guest feel good—and treatments are taken seriously. The room may appear basic, yet is replete with creams, gels, and lotions to soothe the worries of the world away, at least for an hour or three. The Spa at Le Roch focuses on individualized treatments and products. Each massage is executed according to the body’s specific needs, with extra attention given to problem areas. If that seems like a standard plan of action, less common is the personalized serum created for each client, mixed to that client’s specifications and delivered to him/her the morning after their treatment(s) for continued use. Upstairs, Le Roch’s chic Euromodern rooms and suites offer clever design and suave decor. Within the bathrooms of the higher category of suites are tiled bathing areas instead of bathrooms, which upon request, can be transformed into hamams for private steam baths. Between the guest floors and the spa on the lower level is the marble Reception desk and glass wall of the ground-floor lobby. The abundant vegetation in Le Roch’s private garden is showcased here. A small reading room across from Reception provides the same eclectic assortment of books and magazines as those found in the rooms and suites. leroch-hotel.com

MANSIÓN DEL ANGEL & LA MIRAGE Quito and Cotacachi, Ecuador
Mansión del Angel is a former embassy and current small luxury hotel for guests who appreciate the finer things. In Ecuador, a country often overlooked for deluxe travel, one of those “finer things” is chocolate. Ecuador produces the finest cocoa beans in the world and Mansión del Angel makes good use of them. From chocolate-scented welcome towels and toiletries to pot pourri, Mansión del Angel is a chocolate lover’s dream. Spa treatments use pure cacao making a stay in this colonial-era mansion truly unique. A “one-guest-at-a-time” spa, Mansión del Angel’s spa, focuses solely on you. Try a lavender and herb bath. The guest is bathed by the therapist before heading to the table for a cacao facial. Need more
chocolate? Try the full-body chocolate exfoliation. Warm cocoa butter drawn naturally from the crushed cacao bean is delightful on the skin. There are other treatments available, but the chocotherapy options are among the most memorable. A visit to Mansión del Angel’s sister property, La Mirage Garden Hotel & Spa, ushers in the possibility of more exotic treatments. Located in the small town of Cotacachi, about two hours drive north of Quito, La Mirage is a microcosm of excellence on 12.5 acres of immaculately manicured grounds where peacocks roam and guests swoon. Hollywood and European royalty enjoy “discretion” and the bountiful plants, flowers, hummingbirds and fountains found on this private estate thanks to the flawless supervision of Jorge Espinosa, gracious owner of the Luxury Destination Ecuador group of hotels. Ecuador’s unique combination of latitude, sunshine and elevation allow beautiful gardens with both cold-climate and warm-climate plants and trees to thrive in the same place, giving guests views from their suites of pines, palms, eucalypts, and roses. And the spa treatments? Partake of a traditional purification ceremony administered by a local shaman to rid the body of bad spirits and lift those that remain. The purification ceremony is unconventional but those who seek another state of mind will find the ritual involving smoke, a shaman, aguardiente spat onto the skin, eggs and stones to be a unique experience. Its purpose: to expel evil and encourage good physically, spiritually, and emotionally. If the purification ceremony is too much, the lavender treatment makes an aromatic alternative. Chocolate therapies available at Mansión del Angel are also available here. Ecuador’s national airline, TAME, flies nonstop from Fort Lauderdale to Guayaquil for an easy connection to Quito, although a four-day excursion from Guayaquil to Quito on the private Tren Crucero luxury train provides the chance to get to know Ecuador with stops for cultural and nature experiences during the day and nights spent stylishly dining and sleeping at centuries-old haciendas. Arrangements for stays at both Mansión del Angel and La Mirage as well as the Tren Crucero can be made with a single phone call to Floridabased Latin America Reservation Center at 1-800-327-3573. larc1.com • trenecuador.com mansiondelangel.com.ec • mirage.com.ec

Late Summer ROAD TRIPS:
Cruising the Sunshine State
Summer gives us all a case of wanderlust—and within hours from our front doors, Florida has weekend getaway options to explore everything from shelling and history to literary pedigree—with a slice of pie. BY BETH CON E KRAM ER 1 PONTE VEDRA BEACH: GOLF AND DUNES Just past four hours up I-95 from Boca Raton, Ponte Vedra Beach is a golfer’s paradise. Golf fans will recognize TPC Sawgrass as home to both the PGA Tour and The PLAYERS Championship. Book a tee time at either The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, the official home of The PLAYERS Championship or Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass. Improve your swing—and your game—at The Performance Center. Hit the beach, post-golf. Ponte Vedra is known for 40-foot sand dunes, among the highest in the state. Where to Stay: Ponte Vedra Inn & Club Rest your head on the pillow at this historic inn set on 300 acres of beachfront, just 15 minutes from the course. 2 TAMPA: CRAFT BREWERY HAVEN This west coast city is making its mark in the craft beer realm. Tour a handful of breweries, hop on The Brew Bus and visit a popular Riverwalk beer garden. Tampa Bay’s Brew Bus Terminal & Brewery serves guests award-winning craft beers in a 15,000-square-foot facility. The Brew Bus transports
90
guests to other local craft breweries. Additional area craft breweries include Cigar City Brewing, Cigar City Cider and Mead, and Hidden Springs Ale Works. Where to Hoist a Lager on Tap: Ulele Spring Brewery Located on the popular Tampa Riverwalk, the 2,100-squarefoot Ulele Spring Brewery located in front of the beer garden creates 15 gallons per brew, fresh-brewed lagers and ales sourced from the finest malted grains, hops, yeast, fresh fruit, and locally sourced honey. Brewery tours are available on request and the Ulele Spring is available on tap. 3 SARASOTA: FLORIDA’S FARM-TO-TABLE DESTINATION Just south of Tampa on the Gulf Coast, Sarasota is home to a number of outdoor farmers’ markets, as well as artisanal farm-to-table cuisine. Browse through locally sourced produce, raw honey, and handmade curios on Saturday mornings on the grounds of the Old Miakka Schoolhouse, home to a weekly farmers’ market in the heart of an old pioneer community. Other weekly markets include the Sarasota Farmers Market, over 5,000 square feet in the
middle of downtown, where local farmers, artisans, and business owners peddle their wares. Where to Eat: Indigenous Chef Steve Phelps, a James Beard Foundation semi-finalist nominee for Best Chef, South, opened Indigenous in 2011, putting Sarasota on the map as a foodie destination. Located in a meticulously restored home in the historic Towles Court district in downtown Sarasota, Indigenous is focused on conscientious sourcing, sustainable seafood, and seasonal cuisine, partnering with Chefs Collaborative, Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch and Niman Ranch. 4 SANIBEL AND CAPTIVA ISLAND If you’ve ever spent time on this tiny island on the Gulf Coast, you’ve undoubtedly wondered about all those who were bent over at the waist in what’s known as “The Sanibel Stoop”. On Sanibel and nearby Captiva, beaches are covered with shells, enticing visitors from all over. Collect diminutive pastel coquina and false angel wings. Sanibel Island curves along the coastline and the east-west force of the island’s south end gathers shells from the Caribbean and southern seas. Where to Eat: Traditions on the Beach Locals and visitors have been dining at this beachfront locale since 1895. Today, Sanibel’s oldest dining room specializes in “Contemporary Cuisine, Sanibel Style,” using locally sourced ingredients. Relax over tapas and a Sanibel Stoop with Tanqueray with grapefruit juice, pomegranate, orange bitters and a splash of Prosecco in a sugar-rimmed glass. Dance to live music nightly. 5 ST. AUGUSTINE: EXPLORING FLORIDA’S PAST The oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine was founded in September 1565, predating our independence by over two centuries. The city has plenty of opportunities to experience Florida as it once was. Start your excursion with the Old Town Trolley Tour. You’ll visit Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th century fort. Sip from the legendary Fountain of Youth. Tour 17th and 18th century houses in Old St. Augustine Village. Spend an afternoon antiquing uptown near San Marco where you’ll find
European furnishings, estate items, art glass, costume jewelry, antique stained-glass windows, home accessories and more. Special Events: Summer Mixology Series at Lightner Museum As a preview for October’s Dressing Downton® exhibition, the St. Augustine museum will be holding an August 31 event in the museum’s Historic Pool Area to highlight the social trends of the Golden Era, which includes the development of the cocktail. Sample specially crafted cocktails with food pairings and bring back tips to entertain at home. KEY WEST: A LITERARY BACKSTORY—WITH A SLICE OF PIE
Literary luminaries who frequented Key West read like the syllabus of your English Lit 101 course. While Tennessee Williams maintained a home on the island from 1949 until his death and poet Robert Frost wintered in Key West between 1945 and 1960, Key West’s favorite son is Ernest Hemingway. During his initial visit in 1928, Hemingway worked on “Farewell to Arms” while staying at Casa Antigua. Located at Simonton Street, the residence was restored to include a Caribbean gift shop, and an atrium garden. Through 1939, the famed author lived at 907 Whitehead Street, now the Hemingway Home and Museum. Take a guided tour of his home, the writing studio, and Key West’s first swimming pool. The six-toed cats that roam the grounds are said to be descended from Hemingway’s pets. The author penned classics such as “Death in the Afternoon,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” in the second floor studio, adjacent to the home. Where to Order That Slice of Key Lime Pie: Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Pie Shoppe (see next page for recipe) Kermit Carpenter is like the Father of Key Lime, serving up the hybrid citrus in everything from peanuts and steak sauce to Kermit’s Key Lime Bars—dipped in dark chocolate. But, it’s all about the pie. Stop by the original Kermit’s at 200 Elizabeth Street on the historic Key West Bight and enjoy a slice of Key West. Florida has plenty of road trips options to explore, no matter what your interests. Hop in the car, program the GPS, and go!

re you 35 or older? Think back to work out ways of the past. Remember the “jiggle or vibrating” belt that your grandmother used to own? Yep, simply stand and lean against the belt as the machine does all the work! Those fat cells can’t help but be loosened and whisked away! One constant theme throughout technology has been the desire for instant gratification. Why should we have to wait

to do some thing the “slow” or “old fashioned” way when we can just invent a machine that will do it for us? Looking at this picture, one may think such non-sense still exists, but it does. Look at some of the most bizarre and effortless contraptions that have been used through the ages for exercise. Some of them will have you rolling with laughter, yet still, as you look a bit closer, you may be able to see some familiarity of modern devices used today. The theories are the same; the machines just look a little different.
