We would like to present to you our 4th edition of FaceON Magazine, the Autumn edition.

FaceON readers

After a fairly pleasant summer, the autumn is once again upon us. At last we can wave goodbye to our ice-cream pinks and colourful corals and adopt a palette that’s, well… just a little more grown-up.

This month, FaceON Magazine explores a plethora of editorial features; from tutorials and step-by-step lessons - to the latest looks and hot new products this season.

We’ve plenty for all, from the amateur and enthusiast all the way to the veteran make-up professional. You’ll find celebrity interviews, the finest UK photography and all the make-up insider gossip you’ll need!

The magazine has also hit a turning-point this autumn. This is our 4th publication and my team and I could not be more proud. This issue is presented to you with our passion and pride attached. Over the past year the magazine embarked on a long and laborious journey – the seven day weeks, the countless meetings and 6am finishes, I’m pleased to say, have all been more than worth while!

The continuous support that we receive has enabled FaceON Magazine to grace the shelves for many more issues to come – we simply cannot wait and we continue to surge towards our goal to create ‘the most influential and informative make-up glossy in the UK’.

WhEN AIRBRUShING The best preparation for applying body paint is to first remove excess hair from the areas to be painted.

Your model must also moisturise and exfoliate thoroughly beforehand – the night before a project is ideal, this will allow time for the skin to regenerate and ‘settle’.

a very personal experience for the model. Ensure that the model is kept warm and as comfortable as possible at all times. Regular breaks, playing music and keeping project staff to an essential minimum will also help to keep the model relaxed.

Paint the base colours: 1 hour onwards Bring a mess sheet or an old towel to lay on the ground to catch dripping paint.

Always have a full packet of wet wipes in your kit to correct mistakes and to remove paint ( if the studio in which you work doesn’t have showering facilities).

Time will literally fly by as a body painter; however, for your model this may not be the case.

Medicating Depression W

ritten by Catherine Day, this article is a journey through the often controversial subject of medicated depression within the UK. Writing from her heart, and with personal experience, Catherine embarked on an undaunted campaign to express her life via the medium of photography and make-up.

The series is aptly named: Chemical.

“it’s a narrative about my journey through medicating depression; the side effects and my analysis of the different chemicals prescribed to me.

Finding the right chemicals to treat depression is ‘hit and miss’. if you’re lucky, you’ll find the right one straight away, if not, the journey can be long and painful.

The battle with depression can seem like a full scale war. i decided to publish my experiences to help relieve the taboo surrounding an increasingly widespread issue.

Paroxetine

Fluoxetine

“Fluoxetine is commonly known as prozac. i found that this brand was particularly effective and calmed my depression greatly.

However, it also reduced my other emotions too. i felt like i was numb - a walking nothingness – as if i were looking through a window.

“Paroxetine, or Seroxat, has featured on news documentaries such as panorama. Common complaints are that the drug induces zombie like side-effects. Personally, i found that the drug erased who i was: i became a completely different person. i have very little memory of my time whilst medicated to Paroxetine, except for blackness and the feeling that i was living a constant nightmare.

I have reflected my experience by creating a thick black mask on Vicki’s face; hoping to show the intensity of the black hole.”

I’ve reflected this with Vicki’s pale skin and plain make-up. I added a ring of pale green around her eyes that is the same green used on the medication packaging.”

Venlafaxine

Duloxetine

“Duloxetine is also known as Cymbalta. i found that the side effects of this brand were entirely physical. The drug made me feel very pale and washed out and gave me excruciating nausea unlike i’ve ever felt before.

“Venlafaxine, or effaxor, didn’t appear to affect my personality at all; it merely gave me the most mind screaming, brain splitting migraines i could ever imagine.

I have reflected this with the thick red mask over Vicki’s forehead and eyes.”

I reflect my experiences, firstly, with Vicki’s green lips. This green colour is also used on the medication packaging. The drug also gave me constant hot and cold sweats, which i have depicted with the shine and high gloss effect to her skin.”

Sertraline

“Sertraline’s brand name is lustral or Zoloft and was the first medication i was prescribed. The mixture of chemicals proved to be a shock to my system. i had been advised of the side effects; however, i wasn’t expecting them to be quite so intense.

This brand made my already very pale skin, practically pure white, which i depict in the image. Other side effects that i found were; nausea and insomnia.”

Citalopram

“i found that Citalopram, or Celexa, made me incredibly dizzy and confused. i had very little sense of equilibrium and the medication did nothing to ease my depression. i have depicted this with the erratic placement of Vicki’s make-up.”

Escitalopram

“Escitalopram, or Cipralex, was a very simple brand. The only side effect i experienced was that of extreme exhaustion: i could sleep for 18 hours and still not feel rested.

Whilst awake I was fighting to keep my eyes open and I’ve represented this by using heavy black circle around Vicki’s eyes.

Whether my depression was controlled using this drug, i am still unsure of – i was not awake for long enough to evaluate!”

Amitriptyline

“Amitriptyline is also known as elavil. This brand made me increase weight, substantially, in a very short period of time.

The drug is commonly prescribed as a painkiller and left me rather spaced out most of the time. i’ve illustrated my experience by creating a large outline around the eyes and lips and i’ve used the same purple that appears on the medication packaging.”

“This series is a very personal one; i wished only for the best possible results. Throughout this set, i have used phase one, mamiya, Bowens, elinchrom and for final editing, I used photoshop. i hope that i have both inspired and educated. This is my chemical story.”

Once the desired effect was achieved, Arpita washed Rebecca (quite literally), head to toe, in gold body paint. This proved to be a very laborious task at first – the paint was streaking and was very messy, though after several coats it held strong.

From here the face make-up was applied. Again, this proved to be very tricky – without a foundation base to support, the dark peach blusher and blue eye shadow had to be carefully blended without removing the gold paint. As a finishing touch, liquid gold gloss lipstick was applied.

After several hours of preparation, Rebecca was wrapped and tied

in multi-coloured ribbon and silver tape. The ribbon was cut to several different lengths and tied and sewn to create the final outfit. it was time for a few test shots, then on to the full shoot!

Delighted with his set, Daniel performed his magic in his usual editing style and post production techniques. “it was necessary for a few cleanups to the make-up and body paint, and I added definition to Rebecca’s eyes and coloured her eyebrows digitally.

And voila! This is the result; bright and bold and exactly how i’d imagined it. i’m very proud of my crew and the set continues to receive admiration from across the globe.

The hard work was all worthwhile in the end.”

Prepare yourself this autumn for a barrage of luscious lashes! integrating these fantastic accessories into everyday makeup has never been more popular.

First of all, do not feel that you have to stick with the standard short, medium or long lashes – experiment and be creative. Try to layer lashes of varying density and place them sporadically to achieve your desired effects.

Paint the lashes with coloured mascara – faceoN would recommend trying the Stargazer range. how to apply individual lashes: if you’ve never tried faux lashes, try to give yourself plenty of time to as they can be quite fiddly. If you’re working with a model, a top tip would be to apply the lashes when your model is lying down. The process can be relatively laborious and can take 30 minutes onwards to perfect. if you’ve purchased an average, standard pack of lashes – you’ll find they come in short, medium and long. Long lashes are to be applied from the outside of the eye, medium for the middle of the eye and short lashes for the inner eye.

Most packs will include an adhesive and instruction manual; however, it’s often a good idea to buy some extra adhesive separately.

Take a lash with tweezers and dip the bulbous end into the glue, slide the bulb to the root of the natural lash and hold. in between every few lashes remember to open the eyes as this will avoid the lower lashes sticking to the top. Check the lashes on completion as gaps will be highly noticeable.

Creating the Look

Sarah Terry tells FaceON readers how to achieve this awesome effect, with minimal props.

“Firstly, i airbrushed the model’s face and body in pure white – from head to toe. Safety was my priority and i ensured that she was comfortable at all times. it’s a little laborious, but heaps of fun!

Using a skin safe adhesive, i then applied mosaic pieces to parts of her body – you can Google your stockists, there are plenty of art, craft and beauty stores that will supply you with what you need. i then purchased Stargazer eyelashes (in black) to complete the eyes.

The jewellery (including the head-dress) were each handmade from matchsticks (in a cube effect) and painted.

We also bought hair extension pieces and created additional aesthetics with black and white necklaces.”

Who is your inspiration at the moment? “i love everything that is uninhibited, adventurous and unusual. i love to travel and see and experience the world. Going to new places and meeting people from different cultures. i get huge inspiration from strong independent women and also from nature.” how long does it take to get ready for a shoot? “it all depends on the team and what is required from them. But it does take hours.”

Do you have any top tips for aspiring models?

“For aspiring models i would say, most important thing is to be strong and confident.

This industry is full of very negative and sometimes toxic people. It can be very difficult for a young model to deal with.

Always trust your own instincts and surround yourself with good people you can trust. Know when to say NO and don’t quit just because you don’t achieve your goals right away.

A healthy life style with proper diet, exercise and rest is essential. i started to eat according to my blood type and it really worked for me. Finally have fun. in Fashion we are not saving lives.. we just make them more beautiful, so don’t take it too seriously.”

Any beauty advice for us? “invest time in taking care of yourself. Make sure you properly clean your skin at night and moisturize it. i personally love the elizabeth Grant new Socializer day and night eye care. it helps me recover my tired eyes after a long day or jetlag. This creation included a bath, a model, a little arts n’ craft – and a whole heap of imagination! “i wanted to create something special. Something that shows that within art, it’s the imagination that counts - and not the budget.

I filled an everyday, large bath tub with nice warm water and added blue body paint to change the colour.

I bought the leaves and butterflies at hobbycraft and placed them strategically to give the appearance that Beau was sinking into a beautiful lake.

For her make-up, i used a pale, max factor lasting performance foundation to achieve a flawless, pale skin tone. For her eyes, i opted for a combination of gold and green eyeshadows by maC. i then applied spotted feathers (again, from hobbycraft) to her eyes and added faux natural eyelashes.

Completing the look was a case of a simple, nude pink lipstick.” faceoN applauds Sarah for a set so simple, yet ingenious! it just goes to show that the concept in your mind can be achieved easily – all you need is your imagination.
