Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition timepiece Pay tribute to Carl Brashear, the U.S. Navy’s first African
American master diver, with the Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition, which is now showcased at Khimji’s Watches. The Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition is based on Oris’s hugely successful Divers Sixty-Five and celebrates a man who conquered not only challenges of race, but also of disability. Brashear joined the Navy in 1948 as a 17-year-old, and despite facing discrimination on account of his race he graduated from the Navy’s diving programme in 1954. In 1966, he lost the lower part of his left leg in an accident during a mission to salvage a hydrogen bomb. After an exhausting period of rehabilitation, he became the U.S. Navy’s first amputee diver in 1968, and then qualified as a Master Diver in 1970, the first African American to do so. The watch marking Brashear’s life and character is the first Oris watch to be made in bronze, a naturally aging material used in deep-sea diving helmets of the 1950s.

JK Rowling’s Harry Potter Saga As J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter celebrated their birthdays on July 31, fans of the author revelled in the launch of the script version of the world premiere of ‘Harry Potter and The Cursed Child’
E
verything British novelist J.K. Rowling does has an aura of magic around it; magic that transcends her fictional Harry Potter’s wizardry. At the world premiere of the play ‘Harry Potter and The Cursed Child’, on her 51st birthday (July 31st), she cast her magic on her fans who were present at the Palace Theatre in London to catch a glimpse of their beloved author.
The Cursed Child, co-devised by Rowling and written by Jack Thorne, brings back Harry Potter as a grown young man, who is employed at the Ministry of Magic. Set 19 years after the events of the seventh and the final Potter book, the two-part play stretches over five hours. For Harry Potter fans, who were heartbroken when Rowling announced the last in the series – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, in 2007, the new play and the script version have come as manna from heaven. While the magical series turned her into the world’s first
10
billionaire novelist, what has endeared her to a legion of Potter fans is her success story that has demonstrated the power of will to the world. She has been candid about the rejection letters and the series of ‘no’s she had to contend before Harry Potter made it to print, which have demonstrated her strengths. Besides, her involvement in charities and the suicide prevention campaign, which she championed on Twitter by personally reaching out to those who ask for her support, have helped create positivity in the world. Rowling’s books have won multiple awards and have sold more than 400 million copies. They have become the best-selling book series in history, and the films, based on the books, the second highest grossing film series in history. Born in Gloucestershire, England, Rowling conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while she was working as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International. She started writing the Harry Potter series during a delayed Manchester
to London King’s Cross train journey. That was in 1990. In the next seven years, before the completion of her first novel, she lost her mother, gave birth to her first child and divorced her husband. It was a financially trying time and the first novel – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – had difficulty finding a publisher. It was, eventually, published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books in June 1997, under the name J.K. Rowling (the ‘K’ was added as her publisher felt that a woman’s name would not appeal to the target audience of young boys). There were six sequels to the first book - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rowling has also written four books for adult readers - The Casual Vacancy, The Cuckoo’s Calling, The Silkworm and Career of Evil (the last three under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith) – and has written two small volumes, which appear as the titles of Harry’s schoolbooks within the novels. With ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, which marks Rowling’s screenwriting debut, scheduled for release this November, she is all set to enjoy another successful innings in the world of entertainment. But as she continues to cast her spell on her fans, she wants her fans to remember that we do not need magic to transform our world. She believes that “We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already”

Your HEALTH, your LIFE
‘Your wellbeing is your responsibility’, maintains Dr. Wahid Ali Al Kharusi, President of Oman Cancer Association, as he highlights the importance of holistic health, a system of preventive care, which places the onus of ones wellbeing on oneself While it is easy to blame the society and the policies adapted by the government for ones overall health and wellness, the underlying fact is that “you cannot divorce a person from his/her health”, stresses Dr. Wahid Ali Al Kharusi, President of Oman Cancer Association. Bringing his vast medical expertise to the fore, he adds: “You have to look at things holistically. If you don’t take responsibility for your own self, nobody can help you...” Defining health as a “relative state in which one is able to function well - physically, mentally, socially and spiritually,” he laments the lack of importance given to spiritual nourishment in the spectrum of health. According to him, spiritual growth, rather the lack of it, is the “basis of all functional disabilities like depression, stress, etc.” Explaining further, he says, “Health involves the total influences – social psychological, environmental - that affect health in every way, including nutrition, exercise and mental relaxation. Here, at the Oman Cancer Association (OCA), when we talk about health we

So what is wellness? Calling wellness a dynamic change, he says health is a continuum of that dynamic process. “Health and wellness are inter-related. If you believe in holistic health, you cannot separate wellness and health,” he states. Although he is of the opinion that a healthy lifestyle is all about finding the balance between food consumed, the exercise regimen and the mental relaxation adopted, he does not believe anyone should follow weight loss formulas. Most of these formulas, he points out, are geared for women, which is why the success rates are poor when men follow them.
Obesity
He, however, admits that obesity is a global problem. In fact, obesity, smoking, unhealthy lifestyle and lack of exercise are the main reasons for noncommunicable diseases (NCD) like diabetes, cardiac diseases, respiratory

diseases and cancer, which cause 60 percent of premature death (when someone dies before the expected age of living in that particular country), he notes. “It will be very interesting if we can review the impact of hormone like testosterone in males here in Oman and the level of their health status. We might learn how to create preventive strategies to combat depression, and NCD’s along with a host of other health issues,” opines Dr. Kharusi.

talk about holistic health. This is where things like practicing your faith, meditation and yoga comes in. It is not just about doing difficult postures. It is the oxygenation, the movement; it is the science of yoga that makes it effective.”
Health and Testosterone Levels
Pointing out that diet and exercise requirements differ in men and women, he delves into the issue of testosterone levels in men to highlight the health factors. “The food men eat at different ages controls the level of testosterone. This level of testosterone ensures whether a man is healthy or not. It has been shown that the lower the testosterone level, the more obese you become. Consequently, you become depressed and cannot function normally,” he states, blaming the food consumed and lack of exercise for lower levels of testosterone. With obesity and girdle fat comes diabetes and with diabetes you get high cholesterolemia, he adds. Research, he points out, has proven that the levels of testosterone in males has been declining over the last 5 decades or so. And this, he stresses, is mainly because of the diet. “People forget that the diet one follows should be dependent on the age. If you are under 20 you need more energy so you have carbohydrates and also proteins to grow. Over 20, the diet content and combination needs to be different…” he points out. Nevertheless, environmental factors also come into play - from the origin of the food to the production methods, as high levels of fertilisers are found to be carcinogenic. “In males there is a strong relationship between the fat content and hormonal level, which is the testosterone. There is also an inverse relationship between insulin in your body that controls the metabolism and the testosterone.
August 2016
15
cover STORY The more you secrete insulin, the lower the testosterone level, and, therefore, you get fat distribution and lose your health and wellbeing,” explains Dr. Kharusi.
Remedy
While he admits that there is no one common response to the problem, as human beings are all individuals living in different environments and settings, he stresses that the most important thing is to find the balance between the psychological aspects and the physical and social elements within the
16

environment that one lives in. To explain it further, he gives the example of a labourer working outdoors and another working indoors, during the peak summer months, both of who will have different health requirements. Despite the midday breaks, the labourer working outdoors will require fluid replacement, among other essentials. All this has a big say when the focus is on the concept of health and wellness, he notes.
Lifestyle changes
Health and wellness is all about adopting a lifestyle that not only covers the physical wellbeing, but also includes psychological
wellness, which is fostered by the environment one lives in. “You have to create a healthy atmosphere in the surroundings of your house and your work place to be physically and psychologically healthy,” he advises, pointing out Japan as a case where most of the companies dedicate one hour of exercise within the company premises to keep employees healthy, both mentally and physically, and, consequently, more productive. “You need to make sure that your environment is safe and is conducive to a healthy lifestyle. How can you tell people to walk and stay fit if you don’t
cover STORY provide them with places to walk?” he asks, stressing on the need to provide facilities. There is, indeed, a growing fervour for healthy lifestyle, which Dr. Kharusi calls a new wave, with people opting for organic foods and alternative medicines. While certain alternative medicines have been found to be effective, the danger crops up when it is abused and made commercial, he maintains. The case can seem extremely dangerous when cancer patients on chemotherapy, give it up to solicit alternative medicines in the hope of getting quick relief. “You have to study, learn, empower yourself with pros and cons before doing anything,” he states.
Listing healthy food, regular workouts and spiritual elements as the determinants of a healthy lifestyle, he suggests the following:
like those performers in the circus who do acrobatics perfectly, having learnt the art of balancing. We too have to learn to maintain our balance.
Diet
Spiritual Wellbeing
“These days, because of negative modernisation we end up eating out, as we don’t have time to cook healthy food or are too lazy to do it. Circumstances dictate what we do and we have to make those circumstances dictate us to lead a healthy life.
Exercise
“Exercise is a must... If moving around is difficult, you can do tai chi, yoga or meditation. Physical exercise is not about ‘more the pain, better the workout’. You have to find the balance. We have forgotten that we need to be
“The spiritual aspect of a healthy lifestyle is very important. If you are spiritually positive you become aware and calm and the chemical secretions in your body change. A spiritually inclined cancer patient might be an epitome of serenity, with an aura of relative calmness around him/her, while a healthy individual who has not taken the spiritual path might be hyper or over excited and even nervous.”

Medicine and Technology
Health has, of course, benefited from the advancements in medicine and technology, but religion has been a sustaining force from the beginning notes Dr. Kharusi, making reference to the health advice given in the Holy Quran and Hadith. “ Religion and even culture has positively impacted the advancement of modern medicine. Who invented the pulse; who did the first operation; who did plastic surgery...? This was even before people knew what medicine is all about. “There w e r e no CT scans, no MRIs…but there was appropriate medicine. In those days people became physicians or engineers from apprenticeship. To reach that level you had to learn things from the basics... “Then we moved forward. “Did it have positive impact? Yes. Modern machinery and modern

inventions have very positive impact on health care and health management, provided they are used properly and are not abused. We have to move with modernisation, but we have to be very careful, as the issue at stake is our health. That’s why we are seeing increase in some cancers and some diseases in this world. Here is where wellness comes in,” he maintains.
Prevention & Education
Throwing the spotlight on prevention, he states that the need of the hour is education. As he puts it, “Education, education, education…to the power n. To create awareness among the people and to empower them about their own health.”
Similarly, he sounds the warning bell against bringing dry cleaned clothes into the bedrooms. If the clothes sent for dry cleaning come hanging in a plastic cover, keep it outside the bedroom to air for a few hours, advises Dr. Kharusi, pointing out that the dry cleaning vapour material is carcinogenic. This brings the issue back to awareness. “We are extremely lucky in Oman as we get free education and free health, thanks to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. But the Government alone cannot do everything. It needs partners, be it social societies or the NGOs. At OCA we see ourselves partnering with different relevant government bodies to improve, prevent, control and manage cancer. We don’t interfere in the clinical management of the patient, but we have to make sure that we support the Government’s
wishes and views towards health and wellness,” he states. To make this possible, the OCA strategy is targeted to the three elements in the inner circle – the cancer patient, the cancer survivor and their families – followed by the second circle, which is concerned with the holistic approach to ensure cancer control, cancer management, palliative care, awareness and prevention. Explaining further, he says: “Without prevention we cannot achieve wellness. If it means creating and developing human resources, which will positively impact those in the inner circle, we go for it. Our primary objective is awareness for cancers and advocating how to control cancers. We go to schools, we observe the month of breast cancer awareness in October, we do the walkathon and we encourage children to forget the stigma attached to cancer.”
cover STORY
Elucidating it further with examples, he states, “There are two things that happen in our lives here, almost everyday. We come in and out of the car... We know that our cars’ interiors, most of them, are synthetics, not necessarily leather. When the temperature is 40 degrees centigrade outside, the heat in the car goes up to 60 to 65 - 20 degrees more. We normally open the car, get in and put the air-conditioner on and go, not realising that we are absorbing all the toxic gases emitted from the synthetic materials of the dashboard and from the seats – this is one of the reasons of cancer. We need to make people aware that it is a mistake. We need to empower people to relay this information to their families and to make sure their children don’t get affected. Open the door, get the heat out by opening windows, even if the air conditioner is on, and move.” Don’t be in a hurry, is his advice.
Footnote: To all those who hold stress responsible for their health problems, Dr. Kharusi has this to say: “Live the lifestyle that you can afford. Do not overwork. Your responsibility is to your work, because your work is your religion. But sometimes you cannot finish in one go - don’t push it. That will bring you stress and low quality results. At the same time, don’t be blasé in everything and keep pushing things to tomorrow. You have to balance. Stress comes from mismanagement of yourself. To treat stress, manage yourself.” August 2016

W
ith the recent opening of Burjeel Hospital, the premier seven-star healthcare facility in Al Khuwair, Christopher Evans, CEO of the Hospital and Director of Operations of VPS Healthcare in Oman, is geared up to establish it as ‘the pre-eminent private hospital in Oman’. The Hospital, with its specialised medical treatment and services, is expected to shift the mindsets of people travelling overseas to seek medical treatment. Following the opening of the Hospital, which is a part of the VPS Healthcare Group, he was asked by Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, VPS Founder, to take overall responsibility for all of the VPS healthcare units in Oman. “I think that I have been most fortunate to have had my professional expectations more than satisfied and hope now that I can share my experience and learning with others, which I am very much committed to doing,” he states. Evans’, who began his career as an officer in the British Army, moved to private health care early on, working in both the public and private sectors, in the UK and other international destinations. His tryst with Oman goes back ten years when he took up his first appointment here as the Director of Muscat Private Hospital. He returned back to private health care in the UK two years later, and then moved to Kuwait. Not long after, he was back in Oman to do a consultancy project for the Ministry of Health. Following that, he joined Muscat Hills in 2013 as the CEO, before healthcare beckoned him again. “I was asked to commission the launch of this magnificent Hospital…” he points out, moving the tone of the interview back to his pet subject – Burjeel.

‘I want to share my experience and learn with others’, says Christopher Evans, CEO of Burjeel Hospital Muscat and Director of Operations, VPS Healthcare – Oman, as he traces his long tenure in the healthcare industry, in the UK as well as the region Describing its 7-star status as an expression that highlights the Hospital’s finest medical equipment and highly trained staff in an ambience that is reflective of a five-star hotel, he credits its presence to their philosophy of providing total care. Explaining further, he points out that the Oman Government is anxious to reduce the number of locals going abroad for medical reasons and Burjeel Hospital, which has set a benchmark for private health care in Oman, has taken on the responsibility by making treatment convenient and follow-up easier with a five-bed intensive care unit. “The question you always have to ask yourself if you are running a hospital is, ‘would you like your family to come into the hospital?’ he states, going on to emphasise that his answer to it would be an emphatic ‘Yes’... Although Evans’ does not have his immediate family in Oman to put that to test, his statement is reflective of his faith in the Hospital. His adopted son, Arkadiusz SadowskiEvans, who runs an art business with his friend, back home in the UK, is keen to revisit Oman. A native of Poland, Arkadiusz, is a natural linguist, speaking Polish, Russian, German and English; he has also done an Arabic language course in Cairo. He shares his father’s love for Oman, having visited it on earlier occasions, and, as Evans’s puts it, “is very much wanting to come back to visit Oman and resume his many friendships here.”
Christopher Evans The home I grew up in... Was an idyllic family home in the English countryside surrounded by loving and supporting parents and with two brothers, myself being the middle and the most troublesome one! When I was a child I wanted to... Play sport all the time and never to go to bed on time! The moment that changed me forever... I don’t think I had a ‘single moment’ that changed me, rather, as I matured and indeed continue to grow older, I have benefitted, many times, from seeing and understanding things in different ways and then adjusting my personal outlook as a consequence, and, I believe to being a better person. My greatest inspiration... My parents for giving unbounded love and unconditional support, teaching me the most important things that I have learned in my life and especially ‘to treat people as you would wish them to treat you’. My hero… My mother for loving and caring equally for her 3 sons and husband and being the bedrock for us all. If I could change one thing about myself... I would eat less and exercise more.
What I see when I look in the mirror... The consequences of not eating less and exercising! I dream of... Greater tolerance, understanding and respect being shown throughout the world and the end to poverty. It’s not fashionable but I like... OPEN MIC OMAN The stage is set and the venue is primped up for the next Open Mic Oman event…

“Ours is a community oriented event where families can come and spend time in a musically invigorating setting,” she states.
Started two years ago under the umbrella of Classic Music and Arts, the initiative was initially dubbed ‘Classic Open Mic Oman. As Thanae Pachiyannakis, manager of Classic Music and Arts and the brain behind the Open Mic events notes, the objective was to have a very culture-focused platform.
And that has meant saying no to hotels and restaurants that have volunteered to host the events, as the main objective is to make it a rich cultural experience without any fanfare associated with hotel events. “I want to provide an opportunity for musicians to gain experience performing to a live audience, and to get that experience without having to go through the process of seeking normal music gigs,” explains Thanae, pointing out that their previous events have hosted great artists, some new and some established.
alling all wannabe and established singers, musicians and poets, Open Mic Oman, which has taken on the mantle of enhancing the music culture in Muscat with regular open forums, is all set to host its next event on October 1st at the Guitar Center in Al Khuwair.

The Open Mic Oman event is held once every month and the session lasts for about two hours. However, that is set to change to bi-monthly from the coming year, owing to the busy schedules of the team members, most of who are part of the popular Pulse & Soul band. “The monthly schedule becomes difficult to follow through,” maintains Thanae, the band’s lead singer, who is all set to release her maiden album shortly. For this year, the 1st October session at Guitar Center will be followed by one more on November 12th at the Classic Music and Arts. As for 2017, two sessions have been finalised: 14th January and 25th March. There are
Centre STAGE also plans to start Open Mic Kids from the coming year at the Seeb branch of Play tunes Institute of Music. All the events are sponsored by Tunes (sound and light); Classic Music and Arts sponsor the venue, while food is, generally, hosted by Volare restaurant. Classic Music and Arts also offer professional accredited examinations for musicians, which is performancebased, opening the doors for interested musicians who did not have the opportunity to learn music at a young age. “Most of our open mic candidates, with training, can register and get qualified,” maintains Thanae. People interested to participate in Open Mic events need to send a video or recording via email or any social media tool to Thanae who will shortlist the applications. Generally, 20 artists take to the stage at every Open Mic, including a couple of established artists who are selected for special performances. All
the participants are required to strictly follow the Open Mic credo: no swearing, no politics and no religion. The response has been positive with performers from different ages and nationalities patronising the events. Soon, participants could also look forward to receiving a demo of their performance. However, Thanae is clear when she says that their objective is not to make people famous. “We want to increase the music culture and provide a platform for musically oriented people to interact together, in an ambience that is geared towards attracting families,” she states

otel Grand Hyatt Muscat wore a festive look late last month as young musicians gathered to regale music aficionados with their repertoire of music at the launch of Just Jam Session (JJS), an open mic project, founded by Ghazi Balucci. Calling it an initiative ‘by musicians, for musicians’, Ghazi, who conceptualised Just Jam about a year ago, says he is keen to turn it into a regular open mic event, broadening the vistas of music in the country by providing a platform to musically inclined folks in the capital. However, the journey hasn’t been easy, he notes, as the launch event was planned and organised in a month’s time and sponsorships weren’t forthcoming in the given time frame. With limitations on time to find enough musicians to perform at the venue, he relied on his pool of contacts to find a set of 12 musicians to launch JJS.

he Panorama Mall in Al Ghubra may be slowly finding its footing with mall goers in the capital, but foodies, apparently, know their way around some of the exotic new food destinations at the Mall – including the newly opened Tarma restaurant, which is proving to be a must-visit place for those seeking to savour distinct flavours of Oman. With a dose of Oman in its dining options and a flourish of tradition in its décor elements, Tarma neatly fits the demands of food connoisseurs, who want that much more from their dining out experience. There are some fusion elements, some international touches and some Asian flavours tucked into the menu to suit the palates of both locals and expatriates who have made dining out a popular weekend venture, not forgetting the

leisurely weekday lunches and dinners. Tarma, a brainchild of Al Hooti Brothers LLC, comprising Ali Yousuf Al Hooti and his brother Essa Al Hooti, has found its bearing as an Omani fusion restaurant, making its mark on the food horizon of the capital with an eclectic menu designed by Oman’s celebrity chef Issa Al Lamki. Although the name ‘Tarma’ has no food connotation, it stuck a chord with the brothers who adopted it for their restaurant venture - Tarma is the name given

feast ON to woven conical date palm frond covers in Musandam. Explaining the concept behind Tarma, Ali says the objective is to reach out to food lovers with a fusion menu and a vibrant décor that is warm and inviting. While one part of the restaurant is sectioned to reflect a traditional majlis, with seating arrangements on the floor, a wall is adorned with a façade of a traditional wooden door. There are kahwa pots, date palm frond mats and tarmas on the walls and wooden panels, adding to the decor, which is further heightened by the traditional Bedouin fabric tablemats and Arabic lanterns. It was a quiet weekday at the Mall when we made our way to Tarma, but nothing within the restaurant seemed quiet. There was a flurry of activity around the open kitchen counter, with the staff arranging packed catering containers for delivery. The restaurant has a thriving catering business alongside. Taking Ali’s suggestion, we opted for their shuwa dishes, which have found popularity among regulars. Although he tempted us to try a wide selection of dishes, we had to forego the main dishes owing to time constraints. We tucked into a scrumptious array of starters and finished our meal with a whopping dessert; and, in between,
we sipped refreshing glasses of cucumber and mint and carrot and pineapple coolers. The menu has very few vegetarian options, and we had to zero on the veggie rolls, which were packed with cheese, mixed herbs, tomato and cucumber. Ali, however, plans to incorporate a host of popular vegetarian dishes into the menu to attract diners from all walks of life. We had shuwa in two different avatars – in little edible bags and in a cucumber wrapped salad. Called ‘Rocket salad with Shuwa’, this visually arresting salad, is like a set of Chinese boxes. The outer layer of thin cucumber slices open up to a delightful arrangement of greens and tomatoes infused with olive oil and lemon and a portion of bite sized shuwa pieces that are amazingly crunchy and flavourful. The ‘Shuwa Bags’, on the other hand, have minced shuwa, which are packed in filo sheets that are fried crisp
and arranged on sliced onions. The shuwa in the bag is tender while the covering is crunchy and we devoured them like gluttons. We also got to taste ‘Harees Balls’, which is a completely new twist to the regular harees, a popular dish in this part of the world. Here, harees, cooked with chicken, mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese, is fried in a chickpea flour coating and served with tomato coulis dip. A must try dish for all those who have a weakness for harees. And, as always, time or no, we had to have the dessert. Popular on the menu is the ‘Omani Fondue’, which is a gastronome’s delight. The fondue – Omani halwa – is accompanied with an assortment of fruits and sweets. We savoured the fondue with luqaimat, crepes and strawberry and kiwi slices. This, like many of the other items on the menu, is a must try… (Check Tarma on Instagram: @tarma_om)

Diet and Health You don’t have to eat less; you just have to eat right, states Abida Akhtar, food blogger and a qualified dietician, as she talks about easy dietary guidelines to promote a healthy lifestyle
B
lame it on the advancements in technology or the social media viral messages, everyone who knows about food has become a health expert. And, whether one is in a social gathering or a formal meeting, the subject on the top of the priority list is ‘weight’. The focus is not so much on well being, as much as it is on how much weight one has gained or lost, followed by testimonials of trials and errors of a particular diet. What we have to understand here is that it is not just weight, which should be considered when health is discussed. Adopting a healthy lifestyle offers more than just weight loss alone, it can also promote your overall health and reduce your risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even some types of cancer. It is high time that we start taking care of our lifestyle; it is

time we get back to the basics of a high quality life by eating right and staying active. We need not complicate our life further by trying out latest diet fads in the market or the diet followed by our friends or society in general. Getting back to basics: Eat healthy and exercise more... In fact, it takes willpower and motivation to make and maintain changes in your life. You can be determined to follow a healthy lifestyle, but the moment you drive past your favourite fast food joint or are offered a rich dessert by a friend or family member, the determination goes back to zero. But by following a realistic strategy or goals, you will be on your way to maintaining healthy habits for life.
Dietary Guidelines of a healthy plan:
l Make a habit or daily regimen of filling half your plate with a variety of vegetables followed by mixed fruits as dessert. Do not excuse yourself when at work. Carry two boxes one
for the main course and the other for salads and fruits. l Make at least half the grains you eat whole grains, such as wholewheat bread and pasta, quinoa, oats and brown rice. Check the food label, the first ingredient listed should be ‘whole grain’ or ‘whole wheat’. l Choose healthy protein sources, such as lean meats and poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs and nuts and seeds. l Eat low-fat dairy foods: if you are sensitive to lactose, try calciumfortified soy beverages. l Limit foods with added fats, sugars and salt. Stay within your daily calorie needs. l In addition to eating foods that are optimal for your health needs, you should try to include physical activity as part of your daily routine adults should get at least 30 minutes and children at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. You should find activities you enjoy to make this less of a burden and more of fun or hobby.

Eat these FOODS and lose WEIGHT Find out which foods have the potential to accelerate fat burning and get you back in shape
Apples
The clichéd dictum, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ will never become redundant, considering that the everyday fruit also has the potential to burn excess fat. Apples contain pectin, a nutrient that prevents the absorption of fat. It could also prevent metabolic syndrome, a condition associated with excess belly fat.
Asparagus
It is a low calorie and nutritious non-starchy vegetable that makes you feel full, while boosting the metabolism.
Chicken
Skinless chicken breasts not only burn calories, it can also boost your metabolism. Like chicken, even turkey is a fat burning food, as it is rich in metabolism-enhancing protein. Opt for skinless meat for optimum benefit.
Chili Peppers
Well, well, well… Capsaicin, the chemical that gives peppers their heat, may increase thermogenesis, which is a process that boosts your metabolism by increasing the amount of heat or energy that your body is using.
Coffee
Good news for coffee drinkers…a cup of coffee in the morning can help burn calories. For, coffee contains caffeine, which can accelerate heart rate and help burn more calories. But refrain from blended coffee drinks as they may contain an overdose of sugar and fat.
Dairy
Right, dairy (low fat) products have many health benefits and they also contain several fat-burning substances. While ‘Vitamin
D’ increases the fat-burning effect of meals and acts like a hormone in the body, preventing fat storage, ‘calcium’ directly increases fat burning and inhibits the formation and storage of fatty acids.
Eggs
If your day begins with a wholesome breakfast that includes eggs, you can easily keep those hunger pangs away for several hours. Although they may not specifically burn fat, they contain nutrients and can force your body to burn its stored fat.
Fish
Unless you like your fish fried in oil, you can eat fatty fish like salmon and not have to worry about weight gain. It contains omega-3 essential fatty acids, including the fat burning substance DHA.
Green Tea
If you want to burn fat, drink green tea – it is as simple
as that. Green tea contains EGCG, a chemical that helps you burn calories by increasing brain and nervous system activity.
Jalapenos
Like chilli peppers, spicy jalapenos can also help you burn fat, as they contain capsaicin, which increases the heart rate and boosts your metabolism.
Melons
Sweet melons and watermelons contain antioxidants and vitamins, which aid your metabolism.
Oats
Oats are rich in fiber; eating oatmeal for breakfast can keep insulin production at a minimum and help increase the number of calories burned during the day.
Oranges
It is all about the citrus effect in fruits like oranges, which are rich in vitamin C and carnitine.

Happiness quotient in seniors rising Although conventional notions describe aging as an ongoing process of physical and cognitive decline, with mental health showing a downward trend, a new study has found that people become happier about their lives decade after decade. Researchers have learnt that there is an upward trend in happiness for older people; their mental health consistently improving over time. Their contention is that older people are more skilled at regulating emotion and complex social decision-making, and retaining fewer negative emotions and memories.
The war on sugar continues Children should consume fewer than 6 teaspoons daily, caution researchers, following a study that showed high intake of added sugars during childhood can lead to the development of heart disease risk factors, including obesity and high blood pressure. Added sugars are sugars and syrups - including fructose, glucose, and high-fructose corn syrup - that are added to foods and drinks during processing or preparation of candy, cakes, soda, and many other foods and drinks. According to the American Heart Association, children aged 2-18 should have no more than 100 calories from added sugar daily - the equivalent to 6 teaspoons; children under the age of 2 should not consume any added sugars at all.
Depression through generations According to a study, people whose parents and grandparents suffered from depression are at much higher risk of developing the illness. The research found that if a person’s grandparent and parent each had depression, their own odds for the problem tripled. Compared to young people whose parents did not have depression, those whose parents had major depression were twice as likely to develop the same illness, and were also at higher risk for disruptive disorder, addiction, suicidal thoughts and attempts and poorer functioning. However, depression is never inevitable, even for members of families with a history of the disease, notes an expert.

Golfers have unusual hips In a new discovery, researchers have found that professional golfers are likely to have oddly shaped hip joints. The University of Warwick team put 55 elite players into medical MRI scanners and, to their surprise, found many had egg-shaped right hips while their left joints were the usual ball shape. When a golfer takes a swing at the ball, the two hips rotate in different directions and at different speeds. The condition, known as cam rotation, reduces the natural range of movement of the hip. However, researchers point out that it remains to be established whether professional golfers develop these shapes because of the way they are using their hips or whether players with these hip shapes are more likely to become professional.
is bad for health; but did you know that mental toll of bad jobs could last decades? A new study shows that people who had low levels of job satisfaction in their 20s and 30s may have an increased risk of mental health problems in their 40s. Researchers, in fact, have found that there is a cumulative effect of job satisfaction on health that appears as early as the 40s. People with low job satisfaction that was sustained over time were 46 percent more likely to be diagnosed with emotional problems than those with consistently high job satisfaction.

Heavy lifting linked to low back pain Young adults with jobs that involve heavy lifting and forceful movements might be at higher risk for back pain later in life, suggests a study. Researchers surveyed 738 men and women to examine whether heavy physical work in young adulthood increases the risk of low back pain in midlife. The responses indicated whether participants had done heavy, medium or little to no ‘heavy’ physical work as young adults and whether, in middle age, they had localised or radiating low back pain lasting more than seven days during the previous year. Although heavy physical work was not significantly linked to localised low back pain, the likelihood of radiating back pain in middle age more than doubled for men who reported heavy physical work as young adults. And for women, the risk of radiating low back pain, 20 years later, was doubled in those who reported at least medium physical work; it quadrupled in those who had done heavy work.
Autism risk and prenatal exposure to banned chemicals Exposure to a class of compounds called organochlorines could be putting children at significantly greater risk for autism. Organochlorines are chemicals including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) - that were widely used as pesticides, lubricants, and insulators in the U.S. between the 1950s and 1970s. Exposure to the chemicals in pregnancy has been linked with impaired neurodevelopment in offspring, as well as abnormal thyroid hormone levels in both mother and child, which can impact foetal development. These chemicals can persist in the environment for decades; our primary source of exposure to these chemicals is through diet mainly consumption of meat and fish.
Too sick for school? It is back to school time and, as a parent, you will soon have to contend with child/ children complaining of not feeling well enough to go to school. But do not dismiss it as a classic case of an excuse to avoid school, say experts. Stress, lack of sleep or changes in diet can all contribute to headaches in children at the start of a new school year, they caution. And while most headaches can be treated with over-the-counter medications, parents should seek medical attention if their child has a headache related to injury. Medical attention is also needed if a child complaining of headache has related health problems or if it causes the child to miss school or other activities.

Shoes
I
t may be the most unimaginative term for a fashion trend, but athleisure, as it has become famously known, fits the bill of ‘athletic leisure’ wear. Thanks to the bevy of celebrities sporting it as casual wear, athleisure wear has found a firm footing on the fashion ladder.

The Nike SB Flom Dunk High is available only at select retailers and, with a price that runs into thousands, it is, indeed, one of the top premium footwear. For the uninitiated, athleisure is a fashion trend in which sportswear designed for workouts and other athletic activities are worn in diverse settings – be it work, casual or even social occasions. Yoga pants, tights and leggings, which are distinctly athletic, have gained popularity as they share a special fashion appeal; they have found space on the fashion aisle to become a part of everyday wear. But to keep to the tone of this section, we only look at the exclusive athleisure shoes from around the world. The Fire Monkey?
Valued at $4 million, these sneakers are easily the world’s most expensive ones. Created by New York-based lifestyle brand Bicion, in association with Mache Custom Kicks, the shoes, dubbed ‘The Fire Monkey’, to mark the commencement of Chinese New Year, is comprised of hundreds of carats of tailormade white diamond pieces and blue sapphires set in 18 carat gold. SUR Enough... Mark Sur on your Eid holiday calendar to experience its rich maritime history and its scenic delights
D
escribed as a serene coastal town, it has retained an old world charm with its traditionally styled homes and maritime attractions, which come out vividly as one drives along the fishing villages. If you are in no hurry to reach any destination, simply go on a leisurely drive down to Sur; it will take you through scenic wadis, presenting a refreshing change from the busy city roads in the capital. But if you have sea on your mind, take the Quriyat village road to experience Oman’s pristine coastline. Presumed to be the home of legendary Sinbad the Sailor, a trip to Sur is not complete without visiting the dhow shipyards. You could have a glimpse of the dhows in the harbour from the corniche, which opens up the captivating backdrop of the Gulf of Oman. What makes Sur a popular tourist destination is its interesting blend of historical and natural edifices along the way - be it the old fort of Quriyat, abandoned village of Qalhat and the spectacular Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi or the famous shipbuilding town. And with the turtle breeding season stretching up to October, now is the right time to visit Ras Al Hadd and Ras Al Jinz to get an up close dekko at the fascinating scene of little baby turtles trudging back home to the ocean.

Just TRAVEL Vacations have a close correlation with health, and even wellness, provided certain prerequisites are met, say experts When was the last time you went on a holiday?
Can’t remember…? If you are a regular vacationer, you would have, probably, just returned from a long summer break. But would you say it was rejuvenating, rather healthful? While psychological benefits of holidays have been well established, with memories of sight-seeing, shopping and digging into local cuisines acting as high points, there is new research to prove that regular vacations can also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and premature coronary death, in addition to injecting a boost in energy levels. Most vacationers are said to credit their holidays for the feelings of satisfaction with life in general albeit short-lived.
Health benefits of Travel
l A nine-year study of 12,000 men found that those who took at least one vacation per year were 30 per cent less likely to die from heart diseases, while another study showed that individuals who didn’t take a vacation were twice as likely to have a heart attack. l Travel is also known to lower the risk of depression. l With studies demonstrating the beneficial effects of travel on employees’ overall performances, there is a point in case for employers to make travel a must for all office goers. For, employees who travel are said to have lower absenteeism rates and higher levels of productivity. It is, probably, the result of decreased stress levels. l Interestingly, even school goers benefit from travel, as studies have found that students who travel score better grades than their counterparts who don’t. l Travel can also do a whole lot of good for your relationships, as studies show that travel brings people together by building lifelong memories. Studies show family travel can also significantly reduce behavioural problems and illness in children.

Just TRAVEL
l Holidays provide right platforms for workaholics to unwind and relax, and catch up on sleep, as many are, generally, known to forego the required sleep hours. Sleep is important for our immune system and, some scientists believe that during sleep we secrete higher levels of cortisol, the hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that protects the immune system.
Important Travel Prerequisite
With so many studies overwhelmingly demonstrating that travel can improve learning, relationships and general health, the onus is on you, the vacationer, to ensure proper pre-trip planning as well as note the preventative measures that are required to be undertaken in the destination of your choice. And, in addition to all the planning, what is important is a conscious decision to switch off from the office mode. Imagine, reaching your exotic holiday destination and spending time obsessively prodding your smartphone and opening work emails. Do not take your work mobile phone on a holiday with you and switch your work email account on to a vacation mode with an auto response stating that you are out on vacation and will not be able to reply to the mail!
Top Health And Wellness Destinations Yes, vacations promise a range of health benefits and the destination should not matter; but, if health is the only objective of your holiday, you could get on the right footing with a checklist of some popular destinations… l Get connected with nature at New Zealand’s ‘Aro Ha Wellness Retreat’, which uses holistic practices to replenish your energy, alongside hiking and strength sessions. l Enjoy a wellness-focused retreat at Nicaragua’s ‘Aqua Wellness Retreat’, an eco-friendly resort with healthy cuisine and group yoga classes. l For a much needed de-stress holiday, visit ‘The Farm at San Benito’, Philippines and get an in-depth consultation with experts who will tailor the trip to meet individual detox and de-stress requirement. l Experience the therapeutic benefits of Ayurveda at Vana Malsi Estate in India, located in the magical Himalayas; choose from a variety of wellness programmes. l If you want your wellness programme to be inclusive of nutrition and fitness, make a date with Canyon Ranch, a health spa and an all-inclusive resort in North Tucson, where the focus is on fitness classes along with a low calorie diet. l Sleep...blissful sleep is at your mercy at ‘Lefay’ in Italy, which will help you master the art of a good night with the use of traditional Chinese medicine to help stimulate energy, improve wellbeing as well as sleeping patterns.

look GOOD
Turn back the clock As age lines creep up on your face, giving you crow’s feet around the eyes and sad laugh lines around your mouth, learn the art of cover up with some easy makeup tricks
B
eyond nips and tucks and the big moolah industry of cosmetic surgery is the everyday armour of makeup. A dab here, a swish there, and lo, those age lines could take a temporary beating, giving your face an all new appeal. If you are new to the idea of makeup or have never learnt the art of right makeup to hide blemishes and age signs, here is a quick checklist of things to do…and even not to do.
Moderation, moderation, moderation…
Do not get tempted to cover age lines with heavy makeup. ‘More’ can never be better when the reference is to makeup. Often, heavy makeup tends to get into fine lines and accentuate the wrinkles instead of smoothening them. You could get the right results by changing your product range or even learning newer

tricks. Most important among them is to give your face powder a break and rely on a light foundation or moisturiser that can even out your skin tone. With skin turning drier as you age, a good moisturiser is your best bet.
Brow art
Begin with the brow… Unkempt eyebrows have a way of adding age to your face. Keep them in shape and ensure that they heed the strokes of your brush to get the makeup act right. While thinned out brows might require some skill to effectively fill in, thicker ones have to be shaped right – it should be tapered and not kept short.
Erase dark circles
Whether it is age related or caused by sleeplessness, dark circles are a no-no. They can make you look withdrawn and older than what you are. So… Bring out the concealer that suits your skin tone; experiment to

Having a bad makeup day? By Sophia Raman WhIlE A BAD hAIr DAY cAn SEEM IrrEpArABlE UnTIl YOU rETIrE fOr ThE nIghT, A BAD MAKEUp DAY cAn BE EASIlY cOrrEcTED WITh A fEW SIMplE TOUchES Bad makeup days are as common as the proverbial bad hair days. Ask any makeup addict, who also has to contend with bad makeup days, when the practiced strokes come out wrong or a new product refuses to comply. Blame it on the weather, the product, or your temperament, bad makeup days are bound to happen - makeup addict or no. While the product related bad makeup day might require you to change your brand or the cosmetic range, makeup bloopers wrought by weather can be corrected with a few simple accessories. Yes, heat and humidity are no friends of makeup...
see if dabbing a lighter concealer on the correcting concealer can give your face a better glow. Apply the concealer in dots under your eyes and press it in with the pad of your fingers.
Eye touch
Eye makeup is always about individual tastes, as not everyone can get away with a gothic look or go for the complete works. If you prefer to go light, sweep a neutral shade over the lid; for a bolder look, alter the neutral shade with a darker one and blend the colour in. But when the objective is to create an instant lift for your tired or ageing eyes, go for the winged look. Ideally, opt for gel eyeliner with an angled brush to perfect the winged liner effect. Don’t forget to curl your eyelashes to highlight your eyes. According to makeup experts, upward turned lashes make your eyes look more fresh and youthful. Even applying a luminous shimmery eye shadow to the inner corner of the eyes adds a touch of brightness to your eyes.
lip care
If there is anything that screams ‘age’, it is your lips and the space around it. Thin lips can be corrected by using a plumping lipgloss for a temporary fuller appearance. plumping glosses are known to give the lips a mild tingling sensation, which is fine; but it is advisable to avoid darker colours, as they are known to create a shadowed effect, making the lips look smaller.
foundation is the first thing that shakes when you are outdoors in hot weather. Applying a primer and a setting powder in between the foundation is known to make it last longer, but humidity can dampen things – literally. Your best bet would be a stock of blotting papers or face tissues to remove any excess oil while you are on the go. Keep a portable foundation stick handy to do the touchup. And, if you are one of those who cannot keep your hands away from the face, your finger alone could smudge the eyemakeup, humidity or otherwise. A tissue or a cotton swab will help you clean the area around your eyes, but if this is a regular case with you, keep a trial size makeup remover in your handbag. You could also carry an eye-shadow compact and work around the smudged look to give your eyes a smoky look. lipstick also might appear weak in the face of heat; or it might seem runny when you are tucking into a juicy shawarma or burger. Of course, a face wipe will help when you are faced with a bleeding lipstick, but you would also need to give it a retouch with a lipstick or a lip-liner.
go on, dig into your makeup armour for a fresh new look…

The cover has kendall looking like a tacky matador and the editorial fails to follow through in theme; it features a diverse list of looks that helped make her face be the highlight. i am still excited to get my hands on it and scroll through 800 pages of fashion (ads) but it won’t be because kendall’s on the cover. however, just like kim kardashian’s April 2014 cover, the announcement of the cover led to an influx of people claiming they will cancel or simply not purchase the cover because it’s the result of nepotism. if history repeats itself, and it will, it will go on to be one of the best-selling covers of 2016.

Bask in the glory of WELLNESS Health, fitness and all things wellness to keep the pendulum of life swinging in the right direction
Wellness Trends To Follow
Like all things style and fashion, wellness industry too is pegged on trends, many of which can be traced to diet fads and exercise regimes popularised by celebrities and their personal trainers
Exercise: Mind and Body
Right, there is nothing new in this trend, but if you follow Lena Dunham, star of the hit series ‘Girls’, exercise is not simply about losing weight or toning the body, as much as it is about subduing anxiety. Exercise, she maintains, will do a whole lot of good to those struggling with anxiety, depression and even obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is more about the brain than the body, she notes.
Carbohydrates and nutrition
Go on, indulge your fancy for all things carbs – rice, oats and, yes, even bread. The objective is to get smart on carbs and learn to distinguish the difference between those that provide nutrients and energy and those that make you fat. It is all about befriending the ‘good’ carbs and avoiding the ‘bad’ ones.
Get fit incentives
As technology goes on an overdrive to pump up the wellness industry with newer products and services, health and fitness enthusiasts have better reasons to get fit. You can now earn discounts and offers, thanks to a host of start-ups that are finding ways to boost fitness and health. Whether it is through apps such as ‘Strava’, ‘RunKeeper’, ‘Moves’ and ‘Map My Run’, or through ‘Free app Earth Miles’ link with fitness tracking devices like ‘Jawbone Up’ and ‘FitBit’ you can earn discounts and offers depending on how active you are.

Soup it up
Souping, the new diet fad, is all about converting the mundane soup into a juice and realise weight loss on another platform. If you have been following the trends, you would know by now that 2016 has replaced green juice fasts and detoxes with cleansers and weight loss diets that are based on healthy soups. Check online for soup detoxes to lose weight and feel nourished.
Online coaching
There is no denying that training/working out at a gym is highly motivating, but with time sharing that ‘premium’ tag, the new online coaching fad might just be here to stay. The Internet is a treasure house of fitness resources, with varying degrees of fitness modes to achieve your target.
Food tracking Apps
What you eat has a much bigger impact on your health and wellness than your workouts. And that is where food-tracking apps like MyFitnessPal, Cron-o-meter, Lifesum, LoseIt, and Fat Secret come into the picture. Like a digital food journal, these apps allow you to track the foods eaten and make suggestions on what you should eat and how much of it, based on the biometrics data you enter when you install the app.
Back to basic foods
It is all about making healthier food choices - foods that are minimally processed and are more natural. This might come across as a blow to all the fad diets, but for now many feel that eating whole foods in moderation is better than over processed diet foods.
Wellness tourism
According to travel and tourism market, wellness tourism, which roughly translates as vacations or stays in resorts and hotels that offer fitness and spa services, is growing faster than overall tourism. Fitness and healthy eating oriented holidays are booming, say industry watchers.
Responsible buying
As holistic consumerism makes ground, more and more people are opting to buy products that make them feel good - mind, body and soul. And this means a transparency around sourcing, wages, and supply chain costs of a product or brand. Apparently, businesses that are environment friendly and are said to contribute to social causes do make consumers feel good about what they are buying.

Are you turning into an ‘Orthorexic’? When healthy eating goes too far, it turns into orthorexia You have heard of anorexia, right? Now have a plateful of orthorexia… As dieticians explain, orthorexia occurs when that ‘perfect diet’ becomes an obsession. The desire to eat healthy, ‘clean’, unprocessed foods becomes a life-ruining compulsion. Call them fussy eaters or simply over-anxious health addicts, most of us have a friend or colleague who cannot order a simple dish at a restaurant without prodding about the ingredients or asking the chef to keep some of the items out of their plate. While that may not get categorised as orthorexia nervosa (‘fixation on righteous eating’), experts are conclusive in their opinion that such obsession over healthy food is ‘unhealthy’. Orthorexia may start out as an innocent attempt to eat more healthfully, but it soon turns into a fixation on food quality and purity. They become consumed with what and how much to eat; their objective is to rise above others in dietary prowess, and self-punish through stricter eating, fasts and exercise. Eventually food choices become so restrictive, in both variety and calories, that health, ironically, suffers. Experts believe that orthorexia can be just as harmful and upsetting as other major eating disorders. However, unlike anorexia, where food intake is restricted, or bulimia, where some form of purging follows food binges, orthorexia always involves an intense compulsion to stick to any single way of eating food, thinking and behaving around food. Orthorexia may be motivated by health, but the reasons could range from compulsion for complete control and wanting to be thin to improving self-esteem and using food to create an identity.
So, who is an orthorexic? Some of the warning signs of orthorexia are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Low weight (mostly). An obsession with maintaining the so-called ‘perfect’ diet; one that is determined by the sufferer. Restriction of foods on the excuse of allergies, which are often not confirmed by a doctor. Excessive and obsessive use of supplements. Obsession with exercising and working out. Irrational behaviour concerning food preparation; spending several hours each day determining what to eat and how to prepare it. 7. An obvious fixation on foods that he/she believes to be healthy and ‘pure’. 8. Overwhelming feelings of guilt or self-loathing when the so-called ‘healthy’ diet is not followed. 9. No ability to eat intuitively or understand when hunger pangs hit. 10. A strong feeling of nutritional superiority over others who are not othorexic.
Treatment
Although orthorexia is not a condition that a doctor would diagnose, recovery would require professional help. It is best to approach practitioners skilled at treating eating disorders. The onus is, of course, on the orthorexic. He/she must admit there is a problem, then identify what caused the obsession.

EAT according to your AGE What you ate in your twenties may not fit the requirements of a forties' body, say experts Changes in your body are inevitable. As you age, you change‌that is the cycle of life. While the twenties and thirties have the potentials to tide over the age changes, it is the approaching middle age that demands a set of nutrients, which can cushion the bodily changes brought about by the age. For, right or wrong nutrition can have a major impact on the way you live your life.
In the 40s
Forties is when your metabolic rate drops, and your body’s ability to burn calories are no longer as quick as it used to be. Depending on your fitness levels, your body might seem to be carrying more excess weight than it did before. Excess weight, especially around the stomach area, can increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes and osteoarthritis later in life. You can avoid a number of ailments if you take time to eat the right foods. A diet rich in antioxidants will help to protect you against heart disease, Alzheimer's, cataracts and certain types of cancer.
Best foods
Brightly coloured fruits, such as raspberries, blueberries and prunes and other foods like small red beans and walnuts are such great sources of antioxidants. l Liver and lean red meat are the best and most easily absorbed forms of iron if your body is low in iron eat red meat at least twice a week (if you are a vegetarian opt for a fortified breakfast cereal in the morning and eat lots of green, leafy vegetables). l Cut down on salt and processed carbs, and, instead, eat foods rich in fibre, fruits, vegetables, oats, whole wheat bread and bran. l

Soya based foods can help relieve some of your bodily discomforts.
In the 60s
In your sixties, your body's ability to absorb and use the vitamins and minerals that you take in would have decreased. Besides, your need for vitamins and minerals may have stayed the same or even increased, making it necessary for you to have a healthy and nutritious diet, one that can make up for any lack of nutrients in your body.

Foods rich in vitamin B12 include meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and fortified breakfast cereals contain certain vitamins and minerals. You can find small amounts of vitamin D in margarine, eggs and oil-rich fish, which you can top up with a little bit of healthy exposure to the sun on a daily basis. Add more zinc to your diet - zinc is a mineral that will make an amazing difference to your nails and can be found in dairy products. Drink lots of fluid, especially if you are having any sort of digestive trouble. I
t is an unassuming little shop in Seeb near the Corniche, but what makes it distinguishing is its ancestry and its product base. Established in the early 1960s by Abdullah Said Al Rawhahi, this little outlet is a storehouse of herbal medicines, whether it is for treating hypertension or to .ward off spells Abdullah inherited the skills of healing from his forefathers who have been practicing it since early days when there were no doctors in Oman or dispensaries in sight. Today, a young man named Ebrahim Habib Al Rawahi is running the old-fashioned herbal pharmacy, along with his nephew, Younus Suleiman Al Harby, who is in charge of ensuring the smooth day-to-day functioning, beginning the day as .early as 7 in the mornings
Although it is a rare profession among the younger generation now, the shop attracts 40 to 50 patients every day. This being the only old time dispensary around, housing most of the herbal medicines, it has several interesting items to boast. Listing out some of the herbal concoctions, Younus explained: “Sanamaki is a mix of seven to 12 types of herbal leaves heated to a boiling point for stomach upset as well as intense constipation. The smell is pungent, but its effect is “.certain. A cup or two is good enough Pointing out a colourless bottled liquid, he said: “Acidity is just as common here in Oman and the best cure is ‘Arqi Zamdah’… Shirish leaves are good for illnesses including hypertension, body cleansing, skin sores and ulcers, among others. A toothpaste, manufactured from this substance in India, is also used to “.fight cavities and ulcerated gums But what about chronic diseases like ?cancer or diabetes There is no medication to cure such“ chronic diseases…however, this bottle contains liquid mai sukary that can lower the blood sugar,“ he said, .picking up yet another bottle Other medicines of interest include ‘Tafartesi’, a powdered substance that is mixed with water and consumed
for healing fractures. Along with this, ‘Anzar’, oatmeal like grains, is mixed with beaten egg and applied on the fractured part and padded with cotton before wrapping in gauze. “It will stick till the wound is completely healed and the dressing wears off… If the injury is non-serious it could get healed in 10 to 14 days, provided no water falls on it. This treatment is known as Kitata in Swahili language. No modern surgery or treatment “.equals this old remedy

Healthy HOME for a healthy YOU Give a ‘health’ twist to the clichéd ‘home is where the heart is’ dictum to convert your home into a healthier space
C
onsidering that we spend more than 50 per cent of our time in our homes, a healthier home is a need rather than a luxury. Whether it is about making a conscious effort to ensure cleaner environment or generating a sense of wellbeing among the members of the family, a few alterations in the way you adopt a home décor plan could do the needful. In a domestic setup, things may be beyond your logistical abilities and/ or budget to avoid or limit exposure to toxic chemicals, but there are ways to halt overexposure to toxins like lead and pesticides, which are linked to a variety of health problems. A healthy home is not one that reeks of disinfectant or has the look and feel of a health clinic. You know you are in a healthy home when the living spaces emanate a sense of harmony and a feel of purity that is energising. A healthy home is one
that makes you breathe easily.
So… Dust it out
54
August 2016
If there is anything that can aggravate an allergy, it is house dust. Dusting will, of course, help clear the chemicals in the air, but, as an expert pointed out, even if chemicals like fire retardants, pesticides and the like were used years ago (within the house), they could still accumulate in the house dust. Pesticides used to keep cockroaches, mice and ants away can put children at risk of a range of health problems when there is overexposure or chronic small exposure. The best way to clear such chemical-infused dust is to replace the carpet; if you have wallto-wall carpet replace it with tile or linoleum. Frequent vacuuming and shifting furniture will help clear the dust. Also, cleaning the vacuum bag and filter after every use is a must to avoid getting the dust particles back on your carpet.
at HOME Clear clutter
Clutter may not have a direct bearing on your health, but a clutterfree home can be a remedy for a lot of wellness issues. A clutter free home, along with natural sunlight, can aid psychological wellbeing.
Lighting effect
Come evening and you better dim the lights to allow your body to reflect the natural rhythm of the day. Bright lights, on the other hand, could hinder sleep. Too much ‘blue’ light – read that as exposure from electronic devices – at night is believed to suppress the production of melatonin, which is responsible for controlling sleep and wake cycles; it has also been found to increase the risk of cancer and type 2 diabetes.
Fish bowl
Get a fish bowl or a regular aquarium, if you have the space for it, to spread positive notes of good health in your living space. For, research has found that aquariums not only lower blood pressure and heart rates, but also increase the feelings of happiness from watching fish move in the bowl/ aquarium. Besides, the more fish in the aquarium, the greater the health benefits, say experts.
enhancing properties, are perfect for overall wellness. The colour you choose to paint your bedroom with has a bigger say in your sleep and eating habits too. While red colour stimulates the senses and raises blood pressure, soothing blue and green shades slow down the heart rate. Studies have also shown that a light blue colour is best for a good night’s sleep.
Nature at home
Growing fragrant herbs indoors and filling the rooms with soothing natural sounds has a beneficial effect on health. Besides, it is important to reserve one room for electronic items instead of covering every room with gadgets. Home décor gurus also advise filling the rooms with keepsakes and natural elements, while following a policy of moderation in the interior decoration.
family. Look for safer water bottles – tempered glass bottles or plastic bottles made of cloudy plastics like polyethelene or polypropylene (recycling symbols 1, 2 or 5). Do not microwave in plastic containers or with cling wraps.

Popular nonstick cookware contains perfluorinated chemicals, which are said to accumulate in the body. You could opt for stainless steel, cast iron, or enamel-coated ones, but if you prefer to use nonstick cookware follow some safe cooking practices. Relatively SPEAKING If you are afflicted by the so-called ‘bystander effect’ and have followed the ‘not-my-concern’ route, to all things charity, mark September 5 on your calendar and get on the charity coach this International Day of Charity Random acts of kindness are just that – random! It could be a spontaneous act of pushing the change into the donation box for needy at the neighbourhood supermarket or offering cold water to a labourer working outdoors on a hot summer day. Charity, in any form, is all about finding an opportunity in the most mundane event. Like the gentleman who got out of his car at the traffic signal, on one of the less busy roads of the capital, to shake the hands of a labourer cleaning the road. A member of a local Facebook group, who saw the fleeting act on his way to the office in the morning, posted about this random act with a message,

which inferred that although the very act of shaking hands in gratitude for keeping the roads clean was charitable, owing to its context and rarity, the underlying fact was that the gentleman had slipped some money during the handshake, unobtrusively... This brings to mind the famous Edmund Burke quote: ‘Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.’ Whether the note that the gentleman slipped into the labourer’s palm was little or not, simply reading that Facebook post created so much of positive glow among the readers
(going by the feedback) that many would have taken it forward in their own small ways. Although the protagonist in this charity model had no intent of drawing attention to his kindness, experts believe that being public about one’s act of sharing/giving could inspire others to follow the act. While that explains the public announcements of charity acts by billionaires around the world, whether it does actually inspire and foster everyone to toe the line is another story. For every single philanthropist, there are millions who have never experienced the feel good effect of giving and sharing.
Relatively SPEAKING According to sociologists, many are known to give in to the Bystander Effect, which is the term given to groups that fail to respond to disasters, even when it is right in front of their faces. The logic being that if other people around us are not giving, it cannot be our responsibility too; this also brings up the eternal question of ‘self-interest’. But the self-interest norm can be challenged if charitable acts are made known, they note. ‘People tend to conform, both intentionally and unintentionally, adopting the actions of others, and end up unwilling to adopt contrary actions unless other people are also going along with them,’ they state. So, if you feel inspired to get into the kindness mode, begin with small acts within your home, office or community, before you feel generous enough to give a portion of your saving to a needy person.
Ideas to spread kindness
l Be generous with your compliments. It costs neither money nor time and could make someone’s entire day beautiful. l Introduce yourself to your neighbours if you are new in the locality or make it a point to visit and say ‘hi’ to the new tenants in your building or the neighbourbood. l Involve your family in visiting seniors at the old age home. l You could also send postcards to siblings of seriously ill children through www.sendkidstheworld.com, as it reaches out to siblings who feel left out because of all the attention, by way of cards and gifts, a sick sibling receives. l Adopt a stray animal or help find homes for abandoned dogs and cats. Check out the local Facebook groups that are dedicated to finding right homes for pets.
l If you have friends who have lost a parent the previous year, remember to give them a call on the Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. l Make ‘thank you’ cards and give it personally to colleagues/ friends instead of sending an emotionless whatsapp message. l If a friend or even a neighbour seems to be weighed down by family or health issues, check to see if they would like you to pick something from the supermarket. l And, if there is someone sick in your neighbourhood, who has to rely on restaurants for the daily meals, make time during the weekend to cook up something special for that person. l Learn the art of ‘paying it forward’ (where you respond to a person’s kindness by being kind to another), and see the circle of kindness getting into an endless loop.

Men and Health Men are, generally, wary of going to the doctor and are known to procrastinate over health issues…but, when certain symptoms crop up, there better be no excuse, caution experts
E
arlier this month, a study done by sociologists in the University of Connecticut found that men who act as breadwinners face negative health effects. The study titled ‘Relative Income, Psychological Well-Being, and Health: Is Breadwinning Hazardous or Protective?’ concluded that as men take on a greater share of economic responsibility in their marriage, there is an increase in strains on their health. While these findings could be seen in a positive light in the current global scenario, as both husband and wife, in most cases, contribute to the family’s finances, the issue relating to men’s health does not end there. For the crux of the matter is that men, on an average, fail to notice ill health unless it is staring right at them or they have had to contend with symptoms that refuse to go away. Studies and surveys have, time and again, demonstrated a general apathy among men for all things medicine. But health cannot be dismissed as easily, not when certain symptoms

Some of the symptoms that require immediate evaluation from your doctor are:

Although breathlessness may not seem like a symptom, more so if you are on the go, it could signal a heart attack or congestive heart failure, note doctors. Shortness of breath is also associated with anaemia, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, or pulmonary hypertension.
Hair Loss
This is a common problem, one that affects men of all ages, some even in their 20s and may not be seen as a serious condition or symptom. Many are known to lose hair temporarily under stress or after major surgery/illness. But on a health platform it has been seen as a warning for a more serious men’s health condition, such as an autoimmune disease like lupus, infectious diseases like syphilis, thyroid disease, or ringworm.
man date Fatigue
Stress is known to be the biggest inducer of fatigue; but stress or physical exertions are not the only reasons for it. Fatigue has been seen as a symptom of a more serious physical or psychological health condition. The list of health problems linked to fatigue include cancer, congestive heart failure, diabetes, arthritis, infections, and kidney or liver disease; fatigue could also be a symptom of anaemia, depression, sleep disorders, or a malfunctioning thyroid gland.
Dizziness
Dizziness is said to occur when there is not enough blood reaching the brain and could be caused even when you stand up abruptly. But if your dizziness accompanies health problems like flu, allergies or hypoglycaemia, go see a doctor. Dizziness is also said to be indicative of serious health risks.
symptom of hyperglycemia, it is also an indication of possible internal bleeding, severe infection, or a failure of the heart, liver, or kidneys.
Urine problems
Difficulties in passing urine could be brought on by enlarged prostate gland. It presses on the tube that carries urine from the bladder, making it hard to pass urine, which can be a sign of prostate disease, including cancer. Other symptoms include pain or burning when you pass urine and frequently waking up in the night to pee.
Memory Loss
All of us have memory lapses, but the symptomatic memory loss is not just about forgetting where you placed your keys. For, memory loss is a health condition that is characterised by a level of continued
and unusual forgetfulness. If the loss is dramatic, it could be reflective of the presence of some diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumours, brain infections, brain damage, depression, encephalitis, stroke, and alcoholism. Certain vitamin deficiencies also can bring on memory loss.
Vision Problems
With age comes a host of problems, including eyesight. However, if the problem is associated with blurry vision, blind spots, halos around lights, and tunnel vision, you need to press the panic button. It could be caused by cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, or macular degeneration; or it could be indicative of health problems like migraine, stroke, or a brain tumour. Get yourself checked...
Excessive Thirst
The importance of water consumption to maintain good health can never be overemphasised, but what if it is brought on by an excessive thirst? According to doctors, excessive thirst is a clue that you have a health condition. A major

Can you imagine poking, pushing, prodding and seeing how things in a video react? Researchers have now developed an imaging technique called Interactive Dynamic Video (IDV) that lets you reach in and ‘touch’ objects in videos! Using traditional cameras and algorithms, IDV looks at the tiny, almost invisible vibrations of an object to create video simulations that users can virtually interact with. In contrast to how the popular Pokemon Go app can drop virtual characters into realworld environments, IDV can go a step beyond that by actually enabling virtual objects (including Pokemon) to interact with their environments in specific, realistic ways, like bouncing off the leaves of a nearby bush. Researchers say that the tool has many potential uses in engineering, entertainment and others.

WEIRD NEWS Fish tales
Whether humans learn to tackle the problems of global warming or not, some fish have already learnt to tackle the effects of ocean global warming by pretending its night. A study found that some fish may cope with the changing chemistry of the oceans by permanently setting their body defenses to night-time levels, the time of day when they find sea water least hospitable. Fish adjust their bodies every day because levels of carbon dioxide in the seas peak at night and dip during sunlight hours when algae, seaweed and other plants absorb carbon dioxide to generate energy.

History of Medicine Our ancestors had several tricks up their sleeves to treat a variety of ailments To begin, did you know that some of the earliest named doctors were women? There is more…
l Cataract surgery was possible even as early as sixth century BC. One of the oldest known medical textbooks, ‘Sushruta Samhita’ provides detailed information on medicine, surgery, pharmacology and patient management, and, among its many surgical descriptions, it also documents cataract surgery. l The most famous traces of medicine were found in ancient Egypt. The earliest known surgery was done in around 2750BC. l Other civilisations, including Babylonia, India, China and Greece all used their own forms of treatments. Babylonians, in fact, invented the way that doctors treat patients today. l In ancient China they used herbal teas a lot. They also used acupuncture, where thin little needles are placed in different points along your body where there is a problem. l Hippocrates, ‘father of western medicine’, invented the practice of taking full medical history of the patients, before examining them and treating them so that they can try and understand where the illness is coming from. l According to legend, Mithradates (Mithridates) VI of Pontus attempted to become resistant to poisons by taking gradually increasing doses. l He was also reputed to have conducted toxicological experiments on condemned prisoners, culminating in the creation of ‘mithridate’, a medicine that combined all known antidotes in one potent formula.
