e it à la carte menu or buffet setup, alfresco dining or barbecue with friends at the beach, the concept of dining out has found deliverance from its previously held ‘special occasion’ classification to become a part of everyday life. Foodies and even office goers are known to regularly dine out or pick take-away dinners, making dinging in/out a big trend, fuelled further by the growing number of eateries in mall food-courts and restaurants, both in hotels and stand alone ones that are tailored for various budgets and tastes. While our Cover Story takes the Omani cuisine path to highlight the perceptible changes in the growing popularity of certain traditional dishes and fusion cuisines that cater to younger palettes, the special dining out section presents a quick peek into the fare at some food destinations in and around the capital. Savour the visual ensemble of dishes and plan your dining out calendar to try out different cuisines and become a savvy food connoisseur. Our Centre Stage is a celebration of the fast approaching Valentine’s Day, and we present interesting ideas to add to the ‘special’ element factored into the day. Go on; make the day memorable for that special person in your life with our gift ideas that have been compiled to simplify the what-to-buy queries.

Rest in Peace
David Bowie ‘Look up here, I’m in heaven… I have got scars that can’t be seen.’
A
s tributes continue to pour in for David Bowie, one of the most influential musicians of our times and the master of reinvention, there is a sense of great loss in the music industry, which had come to rely on Bowie for its regular dose of musical ingenuity. All through his career, he’d reinvented, not just his sound but his persona - over and over again. He did it even in his death, as his final album, titled Blackstar (symbolically), which was released on January 8, his 69th birthday - two days before his death - demonstrates. The online world buzzed with murmurs from fans and critics who wondered if it was, indeed, Bowie’s farewell song. Even CNN wrote, ‘It’s dangerous to assign interpretations to works by artists as complex and intelligent as Bowie, but a listen to the jazz-inflected album, which topped the iTunes charts, reveals a man who appears to be grappling with his own mortality.’ The final album had come after a long break and Bowie was rarely seen in the media in the recent years, which fuelled the social media to turn Blackstar into his final message. For, in ‘Lazarus’, he sings ‘I’m in danger, I have got nothing left to lose… This way or no way, you know, I will be free.’ Bowie’s longtime producer, Tony Visconti’s Facebook post, in a way, also highlights that thought. He wrote: ‘His death was no different from his life – a work of art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift.’ Music aficionados have described him as a proudly progressive composer, who drew on any genre, from the hippy folk of Space Oddity to the crunching industrial rock of 1995’s ‘Outside’ album and his swansong, Blackstar. ‘His style shifted with the sands, but he was always recognisably David Bowie. That powdery voice vibrating off the back of his teeth - is unmistakable; while his impressionist

lyrics had a constant theme - he was an outsider, an alien...’ said one music analyst. Music reviewer Brad Filicky described Bowie as a ‘musical chameleon, changing and dictating trends as much as he had altered his style to fit, influencing fashion and pop culture.’ David Robert Jones, an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, arranger, painter and actor, was a popular figure in the world of music for over five decades, and was considered by critics and other musicians as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. He’d taken to acting very early on, and, as a trained mime, had embraced the theatre of pop music, combining Japanese Kabuki theatre, the science fiction of Stanley Kubrick and a gothic makeup
to create his first great character, Ziggy Stardust. He had once told an interviewer that he is an actor and his whole professional life is an act. Bowie sold an estimated 140 million records worldwide, throughout his career. In the UK, he was awarded nine Platinum album certifications, eleven Gold and eight Silver, and in the US, five Platinum and seven Gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Looking back on his long and eventful career, it is difficult to shake away the void that his death has left; but there is inspiration to seek from the way he lived his life and experimented with his creativity. To quote him, ‘The truth of course is that there is no journey. We are arriving and departing all at the same time.’

Linda Perry apologises to Lady Gaga
Linda Perry appears to be trying to make amends for her recent dissing of Lady Gaga. Is One Direction Splitting Up? There, apparently, is no end to rumours of a split in the One Direction camp. Another such scare rocked fans of the group earlier this month. But Liam Payne was quick to quell the rumours as he categorically denied any such plans, to an entertainment magazine. When asked if there was any chance of Zayn Malik returning to the band, he replied, “Who knows? He’s just doing his thing.” He also confirmed that he would love to welcome Zayn back.
Scott Disick breaks down
Viewers of ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ got to see Scott Disick’s heartbreak from close quarters as one of the episodes aired earlier this month showed how differently Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardashian handled their separation. While Kourtney seemed to be relatively happy, and even had the energy to do a photo shoot for an art gallery, Scott Disick took it worse. He cried in a telephone call with Khloe Kardashian, telling her that he still loved Kourtney. “I want my life to be over; I just can’t get it together…” he said.

From Kahwa to Shuwa…
Kahwa, Shuwa, Harees, Orsiya and all things Omani in the culinary zone, have ‘festive’ labelled on them; but what about everyday Omani cuisine in a regular restaurant?
W
hen geographical borders blur the culinary history of a country and cultural practices fuse regional differences, cuisines that are listed as ‘authentic’ in one country, are bound to share the tag with other neighbouring countries. The subject, however, is not contentious, as adaptations and modifications over time, depending on the mores of a country, have helped shape various cuisines to become a part of the traditional fare. Like Shuwa… The question, though, is not about where shuwa originated as much as it is about how it has evolved in a particular country. In Oman, where any talk of authentic Omani food begins with Shuwa, it is the use of spices, the elaborate preparation and the cooking process that establishes it as an authentic Omani cuisine. In recent times, with the culinary horizon of the country witnessing a significant growth in the number of restaurants dedicated to Omani food, the focus is on traditional dishes like Shuwa, harees and a host of other Omani cuisines. But for many a restaurateur catering Omani cuisine, it has been a learning experience. One

established restaurateur recalls being at a loss for answers when visitors and tourists would enquire where they could get the famous Omani kahwa, which was previously available only in ministries or hotel lobbies. Although the situation hasn’t changed much as far as Omani kahwa is concerned, it is heartening to note that the equation has shifted in favour of Omani cuisine. In the following feature, we present a quick peek into the authentic fare at Al Angham, Bait Luban and Ubhar, with focus on the challenges and prospects of popularising Omani cuisine.

Al Angham restaurant It’s all in the details at Al Angham, which is designed to reflect Oman’s cultural facets and traditional heritage in its elaborate decor and furnishings. Be it the luban (frankincense) packed in miniature silver containers adorning the table centres, the smell of frankincense in the air, the wooden latticed partitions drawing in the natural light, khanjar inspired ceiling design, or the chandelier that pays tribute to jewellery worn by Omani women, Al Angham is an experience for all senses – from food to furniture. Although it caters to both Omanis and expatriates, its prestigious location at the Royal Opera House Muscat is destined to attract tourists seeking to savour Oman from a vantage point. Most have heard about the restaurant through online recommendations of their patrons, and do include Al Angham in their itinerary to savour Omani Shuwa. The objective is to pamper the guests and make them feel regal during their dining experience. “Everyone who walks in through the Al Angham door is special. We pamper and we pay attention...” says the representative, pointing out that the guests often seek to spend more time within the restaurant, long after their meal, to soak in its quietude and comfort.
also common and are usually made from chicken, lamb, and vegetables.” Omani food is all about going back to the roots; it is slow cooking and there is an element of old world charm about it. “This is why Al Angham exists!” she states.
Although Omani cuisine, as a sought after dining out option, is growing, there is a need for tempting visuals to make it popular, maintains the representative. “We need to have imagery that establish immediate connect with Omani food and give Omani dishes their rightful space,” she notes, pointing out that it would help establish its popularity, as even locals admit that they have heard of several Omani dishes but have not tried them or seen how they look. Describing Omani cuisine as a mixture of different dishes that are based on chicken, fish, and lamb, as well as the staple rice, the representative explains, “Most Omani dishes tend to contain a rich mixture of spices, herbs, and marinades. Although Omani cuisine varies within different regions of Oman, most dishes across the country have a staple of curry, cooked meat, rice, and vegetables. Soups are

Bait Al Luban
Operated and owned by Al Siraj Hospitality Management office, Bait Al Luban, a quaint Omani restaurant, located in the historically strategic Muttrah area, has, in a short span of time, established itself as a must-visit restaurant to savour authentic Omani cuisine in a setting that is reminiscent of an old Omani home. Built around the concept of traditional Omani cuisine with a contemporary touch, the feel and mood is distinctly Omani, be it in the food, the setup or the decor.
Here, we generally offer Shuwa, Harees chicken, Saloonat Rubyan with Marduff bread. For Salads we suggest Ghelambae – a water cress salad; dessert has to be the Omani Halwa and Luqaimat,” notes the management.
The restaurant defines Omani food as a combination of flavours from the paths taken by Omani travellers during their long years of trading. “It stretched from East Africa to India, bringing home the best available spices that could be combined to make a delectable unique meal, while pleasantly showcasing the national history,” note the restaurant management.
According to them, the growth in the dining out scene is dependent on the trend and moods of the people. “There are many Omani places that are opening up around town... While the younger generation is looking for something quick and trendy in atmosphere, it is the older diners that are opting for fine dining and a relaxed ambience,” they opine.
The restaurant’s signature dish remains Shuwa. “Every table has to have a Shuwa when they are dining at the restaurant. Chef Huda marinates the Shuwa on her own before it is cooked in the pit,” they add. According to the restaurant, other traditional Omani culinary items that have become popular over the years include Rakhal bread, Mishkaks, Qabuli, Machbus, Harees and Luqaimat. While its location in the vicinity of the Muttrah Souq makes Bait Al Luban popular with tourists, they do not make up the majority of guests, as many locals patronise it to savour authentic fare, especially on a Friday or a Saturday afternoon. “Most of the tourists ask our staff to recommend dishes that are typically Omani.

UBHAR
“What makes Omani cuisine special is the influence it has had from its history of trade, owing to the long coast line - from Asia and Africa to the Gulf,” maintains Ghada Al Yousef, Managing Director of Ubhar Restaurant. This, she says, has resulted in a variety of African-Omani, AsianOmani and Gulf-Omani cuisines. “However, Omani cuisine hasn’t been fully documented; there have been efforts to compile Omani cookbooks, but the content, in a way, has depended on the origins of the writer or the publisher,” she notes. At Ubhar, most of the recipes have been generated from direct interactions with Omani households in different regions of the country and the result has been a unique concept of fusion cuisine. “Seven years ago, Omani fusion was unheard of… When we ventured into this as the first Omani modern restaurant, in 2009, the objective was to present a cuisine and ambience that is representative of our modern Oman today,” states Ghada. She revived some of the traditional concepts of hospitality and introduced them back to compliment Omani cuisine and modernised presentation and service sequence with a vision to ‘Take Omani Hospitality to New Heights’. “We wanted our patrons to have a modern experience…,” she states, pointing out that the basis of the concept has been developed from authentic Omani cuisine. It was the challenge of bringing this concept into everyday meal, of transforming its traditional image of cuisine
exclusive to festivals and special occasions, that got her going. She wanted Omani cuisine to become an everyday affair, but it was not as easy as it seemed. As the wealth of Omani cuisine was not tapped into, she had to undertake her own research and rely on family members to act as critics. Today, even after a long stint in the food business, she calls Ubhar, located at the prime Bareeq Al Shatti Mall, a work in progress; it highlights her objective to keep experimenting and exploring new ideas and new concepts. She is all set to launch a new menu, featuring mainly seafood. According to her, Omani cuisine is still in the experiential stage. But what is interesting, she notes, is the way some dishes have become standard with increasing competition and the introduction of more Omani restaurants. “Today, you cannot go to an Omani restaurant without having a ‘pablo’ (a seafood soup) or a shuwa or a harees,” she adds. However, she notes, based on her research, that Shuwa is not unique to Oman, as majority of the Arab countries have some sort of Shuwa, which is prepared in similar style but with different cooking methods and spices. “At Ubhar we give attention to the development of our recipes. We have positioned Ubhar as a bistro and we therefore need to ensure that our menu is affordable. There is a bit of science that is required and it is important for us that health and safety measures are implemented during the entire production process alongside consistency in quality,” she states.

Their popular ‘Shuwa Sandwich’, which fuses the Omani shuwa with Italian ciabatta bread, pesto and sundried tomatoes, is a proof of this effort. This novel dish, conceptualised by Ghada, evolved from her own preferences. She recalls that she was never fond of the traditional Shuwa and it was thanks to her late aunt’s gifts of Shuwa spices, during her student days in London that got her to explore the possibilities of Omani cooking. She introduced the concept of Omani fusion cuisine with the now popular items ‘Ubhar dream’, a halwa ice cream, and the ‘Shuwa Sandwich’.
Omani cuisine and tourism
Tourists, typically, are looking to experiment local cuisine, but that is not the premise behind Ghada’s business plan. “It is not a business of one off experience... Tourists do not assure consistent footfall and restaurants cannot be affected by seasonality. So I changed that direction and focused on my repeat customers, who are young Omanis seeking to explore new dishes influenced by Omani ingredients and recipes,” she points out.
Omani cuisine: The challenges
There are challenges...mainly in sourcing items like camel meat. “Although Oman is a camel breeding nation, it is not something you would walk down to a shop and find. It is the same with shark meat and several other items like abalone, which is available in dry form but not fresh... This means going to the fish market or to the farms for best dates... To bring more Oman on to the plate requires a lot more work and that influences the price,” she explains. Her objective, however, is to popularise Omani cuisine. Says Ghada, “Ubhar is an everyday bistro, but it is quite representative of the nature of Omanis because we are quite inclusive and hospitable. We are accepting of different cultures, backgrounds and cuisines; I am proud of my humble efforts in binging Oman to the table, as it is today.”
Dining Trends Dining in or dining out, most residents in the capital are relying on food outlets and eateries to save time
Talabat
Talabat, a leading online delivery service provider that operates in the Gulf, has seen Oman’s dining in scene growing over the years. It has been operating in Oman since 2012 and has observed the market to be very promising. “It has shown incremental growth over the years and we see big opportunities in the future. We have positive feedback and engagement from people in Oman,” said a spokesperson. Talabat users’ statistics for Oman shows that an average of 77 percent of Talabat users are in the age group of 18-34, with 60 percent female users and 40 percent male. Noticeable trends: z Top 3 quick service restaurant delivery cuisines in Oman are burgers, pizzas and sandwiches, followed by Iranian and Indian cuisines. z This means Oman market tends to order in fast food and prefers to dine-out on Omani cuisines. z Most online orders are placed in the evenings, between 7 and 10 pm z It peaks on weekends - Fridays and Saturdays. z Online ordering also peaks right before Ramadan, and drops slightly during the holy month; it usually picks up from October reaching the peak towards end of the year. EAT SMART
There is a significant shift in favour of Oman’s food and beverage industry, thanks to a steady growth in the restaurant business. “However, due to work and other factors, people are finding it difficult to prepare food at home or go grocery shopping. They are instead ordering food or dining out,” observes Ahmed Al Balushi of Eat Smart restaurant, which serves healthy and diet food, while endorsing healthy lifestyle among people through the Eat Smart Supplements shop, where buyers can find healthy products, such as quinoa Chips, protein nachos, healthy smoothies, healthy cookies and others. Although the dining in/out trend is growing, people are opting for fast food over fresh cooked food, is Ahmed’s observation. “Fast food takes less time in preparation and it suits people who are constantly on a move,” he points out, hastening to add that there is, however, a noticeable shift in favour of healthy food. People are becoming more health conscious and are open to the idea of dining out in a restaurant that keeps a track of all the nutrition facts and mentions calorie counts, as it is easier than cooking the same at home, he maintains. StevenWileman: Fit and inspired Presenting, Steven Paul Wileman, Chief Operating Officer of Horizon LLC - an arts enthusiast, who stumbled into sales, gave up a banking career to take up a calling in the fitness industry
S
teven Paul Wileman is a passionate man with a positive disposition to all things life and living. Although he would want to temper his passion with a dose of calmness, he has found success in his fitness career, with his contagious smile and an irrepressible positive attitude that is reflective of his passion for the things he believes in.
As the Chief Operating Officer of Horizon Fitness, he oversees the day to day operations of the facilities in 25 locations all over Oman. When he joined Horizon, three years ago, he brought with him more than a decade-long experience in the fitness industry, which has ensured steady growth of the company. His first tryst with Oman began a year before joining Horizon. He’d come on an assignment to help develop a spa company. On completion of that project he got an opportunity to join Horizon. “I took that offer and have loved it ever since. I love Oman,” he states. What is interesting though, is that life in the fitness industry happened by accident for Steven. It was arts that first brought him to London from his hometown in Yorkshire. But he admits that things didn’t work out right and he ended up homeless. This is when he stumbled into a job in sales, selling washing machines, dish washers, fridges and freezers at small electrical shops. “I realised I had a knack for sales,” he quips. He then moved to Essex where he did door-to-door sales, convincing people to buy gas. However, the British weather didn’t make it feasible and Steven found an alternative career option at the Abbey National Bank, where he trained as a financial advisor. “But sitting at a desk, in a quiet bank, not being able to speak to people, wasn’t quite what I wanted to do,” he muses. To keep things active, he joined a gym, and this changed his life completely.

before the fitness chain called Esporta approached him to work as sales and marketing manager. He has, since, worked across some of the major fitness chains in UK, from handling sales to managing entire fitness chains and even developing facilities and building business.
Steven’s career in the industry began as a sales consultant for gym memberships at ‘Fitness First’, where he got promoted as sales manager
His wide experience in the field has stood him in good stead here. But he realises that there are challenges in Oman... Compared to the massive
fitness industry in UK, where 12 percent of the population has health club memberships, Oman has a lot to grow. “It is changing though. You can see this in the success of Horizon - 25 locations in 19 years. But the percentage is still low... People need to realise the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” he states, pointing out the various offers floated by Horizon to make fitness feasible for all.

The exhibition, organised by Bait Al Zubair and Gallery Sarah, in partnership with Loud Art, unveiled the latest in young Arab contemporary art from Oman and the GCC. It demonstrated how the next generation of artists are more conscious about their art and visualise their profound understanding within their work through Arabian nostalgia as well as architecture, art, photography, and film. within it. It was initiated by Raneen Bukhari and Najla Al Suhaimi as an experimental platform where artists are given a broad theme and the freedom to create art work within it. Its basic premise revolves around using art as a tool to speak loudly to an audience in an effort to inspire and educate society at large about the importance of art in the public sphere. It has helped amateur and aspiring artists to gain international attention, while established artists in the region, and others, have benefited significantly and innovated their art style and direction. Talking on the sidelines of the exhibition here, Najla Suhaimi said the partnership with Bait Al Zubair will give young artists and creative people in Oman, as well as other regional artists, an unmatched opportunity to exhibit their work and become part of the growing art and creative community in the gulf. Reiterating similar sentiments, Raneen Bukhari said, “We look forward to mark 2016
as a milestone for Loud Art through exhibiting in Muscat and offering added value to the existing art scene in Oman.” The exhibition in Oman featured over 70 artworks from Saudi Arabia by upcoming GCC artists, and included works of 12 Omani artists that are pushing the boundaries with their concepts and style of working with different mediums. The event featured a series of lectures by Omani fashion designers, Endemage, Omani fine artist, Mohammed Kindy; Telfaz from Saudi Arabia lectured on ‘How to be a successful YouTuber’, and renowned Saudi artist, Ahmed Mater talked about contemporary art and the public space. According to Paul Doubleday, Director Bait al Zubair, art in the Arabian Peninsula has seen a tremendous shift towards the contemporary. “These past few years’ artists are becoming more aware and creative in their work, provoking thoughts and discussions about modern-day events that have a powerful impact on their work,” he noted.

Japanese Anime Day
Japanese anime enthusiasts in the capital got a first hand experience of the art from Osamu Kobayashi, Japan’s expert anime director
F
ans of Japanese anime couldn’t have asked for a better platform to understand the fascinating art of creating animations, as Osamu Kobayashi, one of Japan’s most experienced anime directors, demonstrated the concept of creating imagery for animation, at a workshop organised and hosted by the Japanese Embassy. A group of enthusiasts learned, through video demonstrations and individual tips from the anime master, the art of making series of sketches that can be transformed into a visually moving animation. Osamu Kobayashi, who has worked on numerous anime productions as a director, animator and illustrator, is well known for his work on anime productions like ‘BECK’, ‘Paradise Kiss’, ‘Someday’s Dreamers’ and ‘Sora’ among others. He is currently touring the Middle East under a scheme of the ‘Japan Foundation’. Talking to the media on the sidelines of the workshop he expressed his delight at being in Oman and said he would draw Oman’s mountains and its beautiful natural features in his future anime productions. He attributed the popularity of anime to the content that cuts across all age groups, unlike cartoons, which are specifically targeted at children. Making a reference to the popular children’s cartoon ‘Tom and Jerry’, he pointed out that Japanese anime is more on the lines of television dramas and so have held the grip of youth all over the world.
In an address before the beginning of the workshop, Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mitsugu Saito said, “Along with traditional Japanese culture, Japanese popular or ‘pop’ culture is something we proudly and enthusiastically showcase to the world, because it shows the diversity and depth of our culture. I’m delighted to know that so many young Omani people are fascinated by it.”

Initials on candles
Remember those romantic years of fore, when teens carved their names on trees…? Yes, it has become passé for reasons that have environment tagged on them, but you could recreate that mushy love insignia of your initials on an aroma candle. Pick a candle that is infused with fragrance and remind you of him; personalise it by carving both your initials on it. You could use a linoleum carver or even a cuticle remover from your manicure set to perfect your gift.
Throw pillows & love notes
When saying those three little words become difficult, scour the neighbourhood market for a throw pillow that has pleasant vibes and give it a special twist by stitching a large Valentine heart pocket in it. Creating a fabric heart should not be difficult, but if you are a complete klutz when it comes to sewing, pick a felt heart from a craft shop and stick it on the pillow. Write your love note on a page and insert into the pocket to make it just right for this day.
Power bank
Nothing imaginative about a power bank; but if you pick one that purportedly meets all his phone needs, you are sure to make a mark. When the work schedule drains the battery out of his phone, the gift of a power bank that can juice up his smartphone in minutes is what one would describe as an ‘ideal gift’. Go on; pick the one that fits your budget. g
Sweet talk

You could also a creative gif involve other family members or children to cuteness factor. One such interesting and easy-to-put-together project is a string lantern or series of lanterns to adorn your back porch. All that you need to put this together is twine, corn starch, glue, balloons and spray paint. Check online for guidelines and steps to create these lanterns.
Music talk
For a man with music in his veins, bespoke speakers could easily come under the ‘ultimate gift’ list. Opt for a big system that promises powerful sound - that is, if money is not a constraint. The ones with rechargeable battery that provide up to six hours of quality sound are perfect for the partying kind.

Most malls in the capital have a large supply of teddy bears in different sizes and colours. Pick one that sends the most positive vibes. She will adore you for it.
Artsy craftsy
Everyone likes to have a piece of wall art/decor that has been put together by them. Get your partner to realise her creative side with a gift that will help her explore newer avenues. A
craft kit or an art ensemble, replete with easel, canvas, paints and brushes, will get her going. But if you are certain she has no inclination, whatsoever, to indulge in art or craft, buy her a piece of art that will help her redefine the living space.

Holiday season is over and the next one isn’t in the near future...but with two-day weekends, you do not exactly need to wait for a holiday. Take her on a weekend getaway to a resort or a quaint hotel where you can relax and unwind without a thought about the new week or the mundane chores.

Give your HEART a life This Valentine’s Day, as the metaphorical red heart deluges the city in creative sizes and dimensions, shift y your attention to that fist-sized organ in pumps n your body, which beats life and pu blood into your body

hen was the last time you went in for a routine check up to test if your body was functioning at its optimal best? If you are in your 40s or 50s, your answer may be a couple of weeks to a few months ago. But if you are in your 30s, or even 20s, the thought of consulting any doctor, leave alone a heart specialist, might never have crossed your mind. Well...you just might have to change your tracks, considering the current health statistics that has blurred the age lines on the scale of cardiac problems. Dr. Maged Abouelseoud, Specialist – Cardiologist at Burjeel Medical Centre, affirmed that cardiac problems are becoming common among the younger lot these days. Gone are the days when problems like hypertension were seen as problems of the middle ages or even later. “Now we are seeing patients who have cardiac problems in their 30s and even 20s,” he notes. Holding sedentary lifestyle and obesity responsible for this, he blames it on the overdose of junk food that the young are known to consume. And when this continues over a period of time, it leads to cardiac problems, he states, adding that stress is also a risk factor for ischemic diseases.

Dr. Maged Abouelseoud
Generally speaking, obesity and sedentary lifestyles lead to diabetes and hypertension, and, in many a case, it is the stress that could act as the trigger, when the patient is neither obese nor is leading a sedentary life.
What about the symptoms?
“Cardiac symptoms vary in presentation. Some patients come with complaints of chest pain or shortness of breath, which could be exertional, brought on by workouts or other activities. But sometimes patients come complaining of palpitation without any cause, and this is a presentation of problem in the heart; it is a warning sign. “Stress causes palpitation. If you are resting and if you can feel or hear your heartbeats, it could be indicative of a problem… Your normal heartbeat ranges from 60 to 100 beats a minute – if it exceeds this limit, it causes problem. This is when you need to consult your doctor as early intervention could save your life,” explains Dr. Maged. However, if it is an emergency and you are having severe chest pain, he suggests popping two aspirins immediately before going to the doctor.
Precaution
While medication is essential to keep the problem at bay, the emphasis is on modifications to one’s lifestyle, especially if you are young and the issue is
not complicated. “Exercise, reduce weight, reduce calorie consumption and reduce salt in your foods,” stresses Dr. Maged. According to him, exercising for at least 20 minutes a day for five days a week is essential to maintain the ideal body mass index. The importance of balancing the stomach weight with the general weight is crucial he states, referring to it as a metabolic syndrome. “Truncal obesity is a major risk factor,” he adds. The focus, then, is on heart care from early years, with regular consultations with the doctor and a lifestyle that follows moderation in diet and regular physical exercise.

Shaping Up with
3D Shape Up, an anti-cellulite treatment introduced at VLCC centres across GCC, combines the use of highly innovative technologies to achieve centimetre loss, skin tightening and fat reduction, specifically around the hips and thighs area
B
usy lifestyle, lack of physical activity, crash diets, weight fluctuations, etc. cause the accumulation of excessive body fats and unwanted inches around various parts of the body. The hips and thigh areas of the body tend to suffer from ungainly flab, uneven skin texture and dimpled skin, most commonly referred to as Orange Peel Syndrome or Cellulite. Cellulite is a specific form of fat accumulated under the skin surface (subcutaneous fat). The prime reason for cellulite is the adipose tissues which become weak and deformed due to poor blood circulation, causing it to swell with excess fat storage. Since cellulite is no ordinary fat, it needs special attention and will not disappear with routine exercises and dieting. That is where VLCC, a leader in the wellness domain, with presence in slimming, beauty and fitness business, has combined innovative technologies to achieve centimetre loss, skin tightening and fat reduction, specifically around the hits and thigh areas. VLCC’s 3D Shape up Anti Cellulite treatment, complimented by suitable dietary modifications and activity patterns, enhances blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. The therapy stimulates collagen synthesis resulting in centimetre loss while resulting in firm and tight skin on the treated area. It is an ideal treatment for people with loose, sagging and cellulite skin and those with normal BMI but high fat percentage. Prior to availing the treatment, each client meets an experienced consultant for a Body Composition Analysis (BCA) where they will be given complete details. Each treatment session lasts between 65-75 minutes and offers instantaneous
results of about 300g and 4 cm loss per session. 3D Shape Up is a five step treatment, a combination of appliance, ampule and therapy, creates an Ultrasound-like effect to detach the fat cells, stimulates metabolism, increases fluid elimination, speeding up the blood flow and producing energy by converting fats for muscle utilisation. The penetration of the 3D Power Dose and drainage is assisted by softer massage technique to drain excess waste products and reduce appearance of cellulite. This treatment also helps in tightening the skin and collagen syntheses which is done by using Radio Frequency waves to cause the contraction of existing collagen fibres to promote new collagen growth which results in inch loss, fat breakdown, skin firming and tissue contraction. Clients are also recommended to a 20-30 minute aerobics session. Equipped with a home care kit that contains VLCC Shapeup Anti Cellulite Oil & Gel a unique Ayurveda formulation, which facilitates the peripheral circulation, thereby increasing the blood supply, oxygen and nutrient flow to the specific body parts. The formulation being rich in vitamins and minerals helps in breaking down the fat and cholesterol. The entire anticellulite treatment is conducted by an experienced Slimming therapist or a Physiotherapist.

Dr. Sajan is the first Indian to receive the prestigious Cortel fellowship from France on Spine Surgery and has pioneered various spinal procedures, including first artificial disc replacement, first usage of shape memory alloy in India and first ever use of renaissance spine surgery robotic guidance system for complex spinal deformities.
Highlighting the importance of robotic technology, he pointed out that it adds a level of precision and safety for patients and, to some extent, protects the surgeon from the ill effects of radiation. At present, this technique is available only in a few centres around the world; but the demand for traditional spinal surgeries is always there, especially with lifestyle changes and better health care, which may have extended lifespan, but have also brought on associated problems of age, like degenerative disorders among older patients. Calling spine a delicate organ, he explained: “Spinal cord is essentially what connects the brain to the rest of our body... Various ailments of the spine can cause bending of the spine and damage to the disc; it could be due to age related changes, injury, infection or high speed accidents. The protective spine gets damaged and the spinal cord becomes vulnerable to injury.” As a surgeon, Dr. Hegde treats all spinal ailments in adults as well as children. While a child may be born with an abnormal vertebra - congenital deformity, an adult could face spinal problems due to arthritic changes, where the spinal nerves could become compressed, causing interference in daily activities and mobility, along with pain and disability. As an expert in dealing with children with spinal deformities, he has seen that children,

especially young girls, develop a bend in the spine, usually at the age of 10. “It causes an unsightly disfigurement of the trunk. However, with modern techniques it is remarkable how far we can go and bring the cases almost back to normal - in most cases. “Even in accidents, where the spinal cord is partially damaged, the chances of recovery after surgery are excellent. But, if the spinal cord has been completely damaged at the time of the accident, then we do not have any science that can heal the damage. We can make their lives easier, though, with spinal rehabilitation, primarily for patients with paralysis or quadriplegia after injury,” he stated. On a general level, the most common reason one would go to a spine surgeon is intractable back pain, he notes. “Normally, pain in the back is innocuous. It may be due to some ligament rupture, which usually settles in a few days. Rarely, it could be due to far more serious underlying disorder. In such a situation, if the pain is very severe or the pain is going down the legs or there is weakness in the legs or the arms, then definitely you need to see a spine surgeon very quickly,” he cautioned.

LIALI
OMAN
With Liali’s expansion in Oman, spearheaded by Rajesh Govindan, who has over 20 years of experience in the jewellery industry, the jewellery brand aims to offer its expertise to jewellery lovers in Oman ‘Liali Oman’ which entered Oman market recently with outlets at Avenues Mall, Qurum City Centre and Muscat City Centre, is focused on providing ‘affordable luxury’ along with the Brand promise, says Rajesh Govindan, Country Manager of Liali Oman, as he highlights market trends and the brand’s novel features in the following interview. Could you provide a brief outline of your presence in the jewellery industry? Liali Jewellery started its humble beginnings with a store in Jumeirah Center, Dubai in 1999 and has, over the last 16 years, grown into over 20 outlets in most of UAE’s prominent locations along with stores in Bahrain, Spain and now Oman. Started by Raed Ahmad Baker and Anuraag Sinha, Liali has, over the years, been widely recognised for aspirational designs in exquisite fine jewellery and personalised service that epitomise trust. What have been some of the striking changes you have witnessed over the years? Jewellery has always been the love of the people in this region, whether it is Arabs or Asians. Traditionally, gold has always been the first choice when it comes to buying jewellery in the Middle East or Asia where it is considered as a safe investment more than an item of luxury. However, in the last few years, with a plethora of design options available, coupled with

international certifications and easy payment plans, there has been an increased inclination towards buying diamond jewellery. With the advent of designer jewellery brands and boutiques consumers are also not bound by the capabilities of their family jeweller, thereby enabling them to indulge in diamonds. How is the jewellery market poised in the present day? Today everyone is looking for ‘affordable luxury’ along with the Brand promise. Diamond jewellery today is no longer plain classics but has transformed into fashion statements with the availability of fancy designs inspired by celebrities giving them an edge over traditional gold jewellery. Women in general, Omani ladies in particular, are known to accessorise themselves with chic jewellery. How does Liali cater to them? Liali takes pride in bringing
innovative concepts in jewellery and consistently endeavours to keep up with the latest trends around the world. We offer signature products such as Love Bands - a set of two rings that can be worn together or separately making it perfect for brides, Pear n’ Ice - a classic combination of baguette and round diamonds set in the shape of a Pear in white or rose gold rings, earring and pendants, or Midnight Rose - contemporary bold designs in trending rose gold with pave diamond settings. Our collections range from the classics to fancy, along with exclusive one-off styles that take care of the bespoke needs of customers. Built on the fundamentals of customer education, superior quality, exquisite craftsmanship and transparent pricing; brand Liali intends to take forward it’s 16 years old legacy to serve trend-savvy consumers in the Sultanate of Oman

look GOOD
New Year NewYou
Get on top of the New Year with a trendy new hair cut/do that will accentuate your crowning glory and give you reasons to flaunt your style
B
get bold with your style and take that big leap into the haircut zone. Yes, go for that pixie cut if that is what you have always wanted to try.
efore the calendar turns to the second month of the New Year and fades the newness from the year, make an appointment with your hair salon for a style that will infuse your look with a ‘wow’ call. Depending on your hair length and structure, one of the styles presented here should help inspire you to take the cut or adopt a new style.
Polished lob
Sleek and polished look has an eternal elegance about it, but the trend for 2016 is all about adding extra polish and shine to make it all the more glamorous and chic.
Bob it is
Short and sweet... That is the style that is seen as a major winner in the hair scene for the year. Go for the cheekbone-length crop, which has ‘It Girl’ stamped over it. But if you have long hair and decide to go bob, it is best to have a talk with your stylist, as it is not a trend that can be changed in a short time.
Geometrically speaking
Popularised by Lupita Nyong’o in the cover of an international magazine recently, this is all about saying yes to bold lines and eccentric shapes, as the shape is almost triangular. If you have the gumption to get a triangular look for your mane and have naturally textured hair or have the curly, kinky hair, this style could just make your new year exciting.
Bang that
Blunt bangs are set to become major trends this year. As one stylist noted, one easy way to get a new look is to add bangs. Go for a blunt cut of fringe around your brows. While a traditional version of the bangs would look good on straight hair, textured fringe can make all the difference for curly hair.
Chop-chop
Give in to your long held desire for a bold cut; this is the year to

LIFESTYLE MANTRA
By Sophia Raman LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN LIFE, VALENTINE’S DAY TOO DEMANDS CERTAIN ETIQUETTE GUIDELINES THAT WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PERFECT DAY AND A FORGETTABLE ONE Get textured
This style is ideal if you have long hair. For it is simply about incorporating your long hair with some texture boosting layers into it. Get your stylist to give you framing layers in the front and infuse movement into your hair. It will even help add volume to the hair, especially if your hair is fine textured and you are looking to change that.
&URSSHG DQG ÁLSSHG
Whether you have long hair or short, you can try out this style and get the desired effect. It is a short style with volume all flipped to one side. If you have long hair, you could wear a tight up-do and leave shorter layers in the front.
Contour...
The contouring cut is all about getting an angled collarbone length, which is just what you would need if you wanted to play up your cheekbones and give the face a flattering frame. Pin straight hair and precise centre parting will perfect the look.
Plan to celebrate the day with that special someone in your life? Here’s a little checklist that will help you get there without fretting over how it will turn out… z If it’s a dinner date, make your reservation ahead. Restaurants in the capital tend to put everyone in a dining out mood on this special day. z Share your plans with your date to ensure that there are no conflicting interests/commitments. z Alternately, spend some alone time with your spouse at home with a candle light dinner. z If not a date, do not hesitate to accept invitation to Valentine’s party thrown by friends/colleagues. z Remember, flowers will never go out of fashion. Take a bouquet or at least a rose or two to get into the traditional groove. z Pricey gifts might have their attraction, but with a candle light dinner and flowers to make it special, even a creative card would do. z Give your date all your attention; and that means switching off your mobile phone. z Do not shy from wishing your friends and everyone in your circle a Happy Valentine’s Day. Even a text message could work.
Its sweepback
When you are not in favour of a haircut, the slick sweepback style your p y could come to y rescue. Make a your face the centre of all attention as you tuck the strands behind both ear ears rs and look neat and ready.

Touch-Sensitive Graphene Skin
A new kind of graphene skin could soon equip machines with good pressure sensors that can make them as useful as humans at performing fine motor tasks. The new graphene skin could make it possible to create touch-sensitive robotic hands or even whole robotic medical assistants. Using graphene skin, scientists in Australia have been making stretchable pressure sensors that can snap back into shape after being deformed. Graphene is the thinnest material known to science, a layer of carbon atoms just one atom thick, arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Researchers hope it can someday be used in a broad range of applications, from purifying drinking water to charging cell phones more quickly.

For Aquarians living in the city, the sidewalks could become a second home. Be fit and well-being will come soon. For, you are finally in a place where you feel comfortable about your achievements and you can move on to satisfy other needs.
Aries
Purple colour will be symbolic for the year 2016; it is mystical and it symbolises spiritual values and sacred principles. Remember, purple is formed as the union of two very different colours - red (blood – energetic force) and blue (sea – peace) – and therefore the futurescope predicts a year when you will look primarily for the life balance and spiritual values. You will have a chance to find the long-desired status of conciliation and inner appeasement this year.
Taurus
You will feel perfectly in tune with 2016. The futurescope suggests that you will choose the right direction from the very beginning of the year. The stars will send down good great wind in your sails. But you will need to think about some pitfalls you might face in order to achieve peace, comfort and serenity in your life. Although revenge is not your typical characteristic, you do not like to forgive the wrongs and the year 2016 represents a challenge especially in the area of reconciliation.
Gemini
This year, 10 will be a key number for you. That means using all your ten fingers to do manual labour, which will bring you rewards. That’s not all, your ten toes will also help to ensure that you will not pointlessly sit at home but you will visit many interesting and inspiring places. Ten is
also the symbol of the basic opposites – yin and yang, which is the clear expression of existence and non-existence (truth or falsity) in our digital world.
Cancer
At the beginning of 2016, you were/are probably a bit depressed and without energy. Whether the end of previous year was exhausting in work or in private, your mind might encounter doubts. You would need to know how to empower yourself to manage the new emerging challenges. According to futurescope, the answer lies in taking a major step forward in your work or in self-realization during the year.
Leo
What has happened in recent years in your life may not have been perfect, and, naturally, you expect better direction from 2016. The futurescope brings you good news. The year will favour your glamorous appearance and your skills. But of course, nothing comes by itself and you need to utilise your potential to your advantage. Regarding the appearance, your hairstyle or a change of your entire appearance can highlight your whole tuning with the year.
Virgo
Virgo, the year 2016 may raise concerns. When you watch the TV news, you may feel distress from what is happening in the world and even want to go somewhere far away. However, if you have a family or a partner, these thoughts will quickly pass, as you are someone who takes care and who is able to plan ahead. Your fears represent a challenge that must be overcome.
Libra
Your futurescope for 2016 highlights your own efforts, at work or at home, as particularly important. If you have had interesting ideas in the previous years, you probably often have not finished them to a successful end. In 2016, however, you have a great chance to change this approach. If you care about family and have a responsible job, you must remember that you do

not have much free time to spare; but this year you have a unique opportunity to change that.
Scorpio
Yes, there has been enough hypocrisy and pretence in recent years. The futurescope clearly indicates that one of your main wishes for 2016 is that the atmosphere around should be full of sincerity, openness and fair play. You have lost a lot of energy when you had to lie to someone, even when it was a compassionate lie. You have also lost time pretending and creating false impressions. All that will change...
Sagittarius
2016 promises an infinite number of pleasant experiences. Travelling will be among the most important ones. Perhaps you are already looking forward to the exhilarating visit to the Roman Colosseum; the bolder ones can also set out at Machu Picchu or head to the Great Wall in China and pass it from its very start to the end. This is, of course, only a fraction of your countless travel possibilities, which you will enjoy.
Capricorn
You have always been one of those who thinks about the consequences of all actions. You do not usually go headlong into things, which is why you enjoyed rather successful recent years, at least materially. You can always find a reason to envy, but you are still sufficiently self-critical and you have a realistic view of the world, so you know that human kind is now in one of its best historical stages.
Pisces
Your investment in education is worth, according to the futurescope for 2016. As they say, no pain no gain. And so, without the continuous improvement of your knowledge, you cannot expect to make any significant progress or even a lifetime discovery. You could, of course, turn your head and quietly and effortlessly float with the flow, but would this attitude bring you joy? By all accounts, this year you have great potential to reveal what is hidden to others.

History of dining out The concept of selling food for profit goes back to the days of ancient civilisations when street vendors sold food items z The need for public eateries is believed to have been established as far back as the Roman Empire and Ancient China, when peasants, bringing their goods to the markets, stopped by roadside inns along the way. z The roadside inns of the Middle Ages were the earliest forms of modern day sit-down restaurant. z The menu choices were strictly chef’s choice. z After the French Revolution, chefs once employed by noble households, found themselves out of a job; many of these displaced workers decided to open up their own establishments and offer prix fixe meals to the masses. z The French style of dining out spread to Great Britain and across the Atlantic to the United States. z Restaurant is a French term; it was once used to describe the rich bouillons served at taverns and public houses in France, to restore the spirits and relieve ailments. z The world’s oldest restaurant is in Spain. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Botin Restaurant in Madrid, Spain is the world’s oldest operating restaurant; it has been in business since 1725. z The first cafes – defined as places selling drinks and snacks – were established in Constantinople in 1550.
