Kristen Stewart: Beyond ‘Twilight’ Kristen Stewart, who made a whistle stop visit to Oman last month, is all set to take her ‘Twilight’ fame to another level with her new film ‘Personal Shopper’ From acting in horror movies to making fashion statements at every outing, Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart is living the life of a celeb to the hilt. But celebritydom, is, apparently, not what she is seeking, going by what she told an entertainment magazine: ‘I don’t want to be a movie star like Angelina Jolie. Nothing about being a celebrity is desirable. I am an actor. It’s bizarre to me that everybody is so obsessive.’ Her quick visit to Oman late last year, however, demonstrated how big a star she is with social media buzzing with blurry images of her getting into a car at the airport. She was in town with the crew of her latest film ‘Personal Shoper’, a ghost story set in the fashion underworld, which is slated for release some time this year. The movie will be shot in Muscat, Bahla and Nizwa provinces, including Bahla Historical Fort; it will also be shot in Prague, Paris and London. The choice of Oman for this movie is linked to National Geographic’s inclusion of Bahla province in a report on the world’s most terrifying places. For Kristen Jaymes Stewart, who became a star playing the protagonist Bella Swan in the Twilight Saga film series from 2008 to 2012, which has

grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide, the upcoming ghost movie is a familiar ground. She was still in her teens (born April 9, 1990) when she began her career in 1999 and came to prominence playing Jodie Foster’s daughter in the 2002 thriller ‘Panic Room’. She has had a string of hits since, including ‘Speak’, ‘Zathura’, ‘Into The Wild’, ‘Adventureland’, ‘The Runaways’, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, ‘On the Road’, ‘Camp X-Ray’, ‘Still Alice’ and ‘Equals’. In 2010, ‘Vanity Fair’ listed her as the highest earning female actress in its ‘Hollywood Top Earners List’; the very next year, she was named number one on Forbes magazine’s list of ‘Hollywood’s Best Actors for the Buck’. Again, in 2012, Forbes listed her as the highest paid actress with total earnings of $34.5 million. Stewart became the first American actress to win a Cesar Award when she received the Best Supporting Actress for her role in Clouds of Sils Maria. She also won the 2010 Rising Star BAFTA Award. Born in Los Angeles to parents involved in the field of entertainment, her entry into Hollywood was not surprising - her father, John Stewart, is a stage manager and
television producer and mother, Jules Mann-Stewart, is a script supervisor and has also directed a film. As a growing up child she thought she would work behind the camera and recalls that she never considered becoming an actor. ‘I never wanted to be the center of attention — I wasn’t that ‘I want to be famous, I want to be an actor’ kid. I never sought out acting, but I always practiced my autograph because I love pens. I’d write my name on everything,’ she is reported to have said.

Sir Elton John ‘back in touch’ with his mother Sir Elton John has ended his bitter eight-year feud with his mother Sheila. He Chris Brown is dissing Rihanna and Drake on Twitter?
Aubrey Drake Graham’s recent collaboration with Rihanna in creating the best track of her highly anticipated new album has, seemingly, sent Chris Brown into a rage. Shortly after Rihanna posted a photo of her and Drake filming the ‘Work’ music video, he tweeted, “Some days are better than others…love is love. Nothing bad will ever last.” Fans would remember that Drake and Chris feuded back in 2014, and now with rumours that Drake and Rihanna are dating, Brown is in a foul mood.

He said: “Out of respect for my mother’s privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship.” Their bust-up was sparked by Sheila’s refusal to cut off contact with two of her son’s oldest friends, Bob Halley and John Reid, after he fell out with them.

ith Origin Oman engendering national pride and encouraging consumers to choose locally manufactured products and services and SME oriented organisations like SMEF (Small and Medium Enterprise Development Fund) exhorting young Omanis to share the mantle of economic responsibility, the onus is on every resident of Oman to pledge support and help augment the growth of the economy, which is shifting its reliance from oil to other sectors. The focus on SME development, spearheaded by several corporate houses under their CSR initiatives, is a sharp indication of the way things are poised to move in the coming years. SMEs are seen as key contributors to the economic growth as well as major sources of job creation. And with the country going through a major shift in its economic agenda, SMEs, which reportedly account for 90 percent of all registered firms in the Sultanate, are expected to share the mantle with innovative ventures. The second edition of Entrepreneurship Award, held recently by Riyada (Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development), to celebrate Oman’s entrepreneurial success, is a case in point. The Government has initiated a number of measures, both financial and educational, to give this segment a boost; however, what is interesting to note is the importance accorded to SMEs by major corporate houses as well as committed private sector enterprises to kindle the spirit of entrepreneurship among Omani youth. It is this element of interest in tapping the entrepreneurial interest among young Omanis and channelizing

O
rigin Oman is an important domestic campaign to promote Oman-made products and services; it has the full support of Government, business and community organisations. However, it is the backing from everyday consumers that can help the local industry grow, maintains Hamood Al Balushi, Director of Omani Products’ Department, Public Establishment for Industrial Estates, as he highlights the role and objectives of Origin Oman in the following interview. What is the role played by Origin Oman in promoting locally manufactured products and services? Origin Oman Campaign, which is being run by the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), aims at promoting the Sultanate’s industries, contribute to creating employment opportunities for the nationals, and subsequently boost the advancement of national economy. The objectives of this campaign comprise promoting Omani products through media and advertisements via various media, organising of meetings with procurement and projects’ officials in government and private institutions, and engineering consulting offices, in a way to promote local products and shed light on their high quality, enabling consumers to clearly identify Oman-made products and to make an informed choice, defining the available products and their quality, and assisting companies to improve their marketing methods. The success of this campaign is a shared responsibility of all segments of society. How can new manufacturers enlist your support to initiate their business ventures? We have a website dedicated to the national campaign of promoting Omani products (www.originoman. om). The website aims at complementing the pivotal role played by the campaign in supporting locally

and services. PEIE organises a series of activities and exhibitions to encourage government entities, business owners and individuals to dedicate their support to the Omani products, which positively reflects in the advancement of Oman’s economy. In this regard, a series of exhibitions are being held on an annual basis in the various commercial centres across the Sultanate to disseminate awareness on the campaign. The commercial centres are playing a great role in highlighting Omani products on their shelves which helps in creating further awareness on the quality of these products. manufactured products, factory owners, businesses, and consumers. Various services are available online that both consumers and business owners can benefit from. The website underscores the importance of the campaign and its objectives. Updated news on the campaign can also be accessed. New manufacturers can view the type of support they can benefit from the campaign. They can also obtain a membership; obtain the permit to use the logo of Origin Oman campaign, and view opportunities to promote their products through the website. Which are some of the prominent companies under Origin Oman? Several prominent companies benefit from Origin Oman Campaign including Oman Foodstuff Factory, A’Saffa Foods, Areej Vegetable Oils and Derivatives, Oman Flour Mills Company, Modern Dairy Factory, Gulf Mushroom Products Co. and Salalah Mills, among other companies. What more needs to be done to strengthen the local brand awareness and support the same? We aim at highlighting Omani products both locally and internationally. Locally, the campaign is receiving great feedbacks from consumers and manufacturers. Internationally, we can today witness exports of locally manufactured products to countries in various parts of the world. Companies are always encouraged to take part in various events worldwide to disseminate more awareness on the Omani products. The upcoming Omani Products’ Exhibition – known as OPEX 2016 – will take place from 11th to 14th April, 2016 in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. OPEX event is organised by a committee formed by Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development (Ithraa), and Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI). The exhibition in Ethiopia aspires to further promote Omani products and increase trade relations with Ethiopia. More than 100 companies are expected to take part in this exhibition, which verifies the aspiration of the Omani industries to be present in different markets across the continents.

SMEs
to the fore From spurring a culture of entrepreneurship to supporting business ventures that are targeted at boosting the country’s economic development, SME Development Fund, a Government initiative, has its fingers on the SME pulse of the country SMEF (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund) is driven to encourage the development of SMEs and entrepreneurship in the country, states its Chief Executive Officer, Raphael Parambi. This, he notes, is realised through programmes directed towards creating an environment of entrepreneurship in the country, and is sought to be achieved through an integrated, multidimensional approach. The first dimension focuses on inculcating the spirit of entrepreneurship at the academic level. “Our intention is to create an entrepreneurial culture in the university system; it is about creating a mind-set change,” explains Parambi. The Entrepreneurial Campus initiative, a broad array of programme with resources, is aimed at creating entrepreneurially minded young people across campuses in Oman. This programme is presently in place in 14 colleges, which is expected to reach to 21 during the course of the year. “If things work out as planned, then by 2017 we will be in every college in the country - every institute of higher education, irrespective of government or private,” he adds. This programme, which is open to both Omani as well as expatriate students, would entail an introduction to entrepreneurship through setting up of an
entrepreneurship club on campus. Encouraging, facilitating and promoting entrepreneurial activities on campuses will be the prime aim of these clubs. Faculty training too is a key part of the programme, wherein entrepreneurship experts from around the world are brought over to

train the faculty in the colleges and equip them with necessary skills to train and mentor students in entrepreneurship. The first module of the programme was undertaken with the Harvard Business School faculty and the next, scheduled for some time in April, is expected to be done through a senior member of the London Business School faculty of entrepreneurship. This will be followed by two more training modules during the course of the year. “To further the entrepreneurial culture on campuses, we will also finance the setting up of small business on campuses; it could be a canteen, a small store...like the proverbial lemonade stall, where a student learns how to do business or sees someone else doing business. That summarises first part of our entrepreneurship programme, which is oriented towards igniting entrepreneurial spirit among students and faculty alike,” states Parambi. The second part of entrepreneurship awareness programme is rather unique, as it is targeted at seniors. With its 2nd schedule currently being run at the Ministry of Defence (MOD), it is expected to utilise long years of service and discipline of MOD personnel. This initiative, by SME development Fund, is in response to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s wish to see entrepreneurship making its way in to the government sector. Commenting on the same, Parambi said, “We have trained two batches, and, within the current year, we intend to run five more. This programme is expected to expand to other arms of the government. The objective is to convert civil servants with years of work experience, who do not need to learn the basics, to an entrepreneur. It is about breaking out of the mould...”
Financial support
In addition to training and inculcating entrepreneurship spirit at academic level, SMEF is also involved in financing and supporting existing SMEs who are seeking to expand and the ‘creation’ of new entrepreneurs.
20
February 2016
Eligible SMEs are offered financing at subsidised interest rates. The SMEs need not be wholly owned by Omanis, but the Omani investor with high stake should be fully involved in the business. It could be a new SME or one that is already in business. In the case of financing new SMEs, there need to be a proper business plan/feasibility study to support their financing needs. “Typically our financing product is marketed through visits to customers, but there have been enquiries from many SMEs through word of mouth,” states Parambi. The main purpose of setting up of the Fund is to cater to Small & Medium Enterprises and not macro enterprises with minimum funding to SMEs not being less than RO50,000, he added.
Hurdles
The challenges that SMEs, particularly the younger and smaller ones face are many. Less than two out of three small businesses survive two years, and less than a third reach the four-year mark. Some of the challenges faced by SMEs are poorly designed or no business plan; poorly planned capital structure; and lack of understanding of accounting and cash flows. According to Parambi, lot of efforts have been put in to study the reasons for the high failure of SMEs. He also pointed out that SMEF’s Nurturing Plan (comprising accounting, software, monitoring and mentoring) has been launched to tackle the lack of understanding of accounting and cash flows by the SMEs so that they understand the importance of maintaining proper books of accounts. The SMEs who have availed financing under the Fund’s subsidised scheme are provided accounting and software support. The accounting support is provided by leading audit firms; monitoring of SMEs performance and mentoring
them are carried out by a team from SMEF. This, notes Parambi, is being well accepted by the SMEs who are gradually realising the importance of maintaining books of accounts and adhering to financial discipline.
Need for legitimising
The market is dominated by large corporate houses, or groups, in many cases and it is quite competitive on the process and pricing front, which never used to be SME friendly. But things are changing fast, opines Parambi. “The objective of legitimising our effort is to deal with the larger players, with the government and other stake holders to create a conducive external environment for SMEs by establishing a SME Value Chain that would support larger businesses. We are actively engaged with Oil and Gas Ministry’s ambitious ICV (In Country value) initiative. We are in discussion with PDO, Oxy and major oil companies to support and contribute to this major initiative by bilaterally engaging with the SLCC’s, LCC and other SME’s who are associated with them. The Government’s focus is on to drive the economy through In country Value Initiative on other growing sectors such as infrastructure; a 10 percent allocation of the major contracts to SME’s is a very significant move on this front,” he states.

‘MY FRIENDS, MY COMMUNITY’
‘Wear Lots Of Socks’ on 21 March 2016 – that’s the call from Down Syndrome International to everyone across the world to raise awareness on World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD)
One in every 380+ is born with Down Syndrome in Oman. “This is double the worldwide statistics,” says Ahmed M. Al Jabri, Chairman of Oman Down Syndrome Association (ODSA). “The number of babies born with Down Syndrome has increased. In the United States, about 1 in every 700 babies is born with Down syndrome. In developed countries the figure is 1 in 800 to 1 in 1000. In Oman, one child in about every 400 has Down Syndrome,” he adds In the light of these facts, ODSA strives to support, encourage and give confidence building skills to all those living with Down Syndrome in Oman, particularly children. “Our aim is to effectively increase in quantity i.e. number of sessions per week and vary the current

therapeutical activities to maximise the children’s potential in developing comprehendible speech, improved cognitive thoughts and ideas; better developed gross and motor skills, understanding of the basic requirements of teaching from A-Z, simple mathematical calculations (Arabic and English), symbol and other visual recognition of everyday objects,” explains Ahmed. The group meets every Sundays from 4.30pm to 7.00pm and caters to approximately 20-25 children at one given time. During these sessions, the child avails specialist services of three speech therapists, one sign language teacher, one special needs teacher and one physiotherapist/ occupational therapist. With the world observing Down Syndrome Day on March 21, OSDA plans to mark the occasion with a host of activities, including a tour
In the following interview Ahmed Al Jabri highlights the efforts made by the Association to create interactive forums for the members and the measures undertaken by OSDA to establish a favourable environment: The 2016 theme, ‘My Friends, My Community’, of WDSD is suggestive of creating an inclusive environment. How can our society play a role in creating such an environment? z Allowing children to be taught in mainstream schools, promoting other children’s’ awareness of being around and supporting these special children, would be a step in the right direction z Advocating on-the-jobtraining for young adults to learn skills to be able to work, would greatly help their career opportunities and social skills z Ensuring that medical professions are well informed about the potentials of individuals’ with
Down Syndrome to learn would ensure that they do not give negative comments about the individuals’ abilities. Why was a need felt to establish Down Syndrome Parent Support Group? No facilities existed before the group was founded in 2003; it was renamed Oman Down Syndrome Association (ODSA) in 2014. It is clear that the increase of babies being born with this condition every year warranted such early intervention. What needs to be done to help Down Syndrome children in the society? Despite all the efforts of the Association, Oman is still currently lacking, in comparison to what other countries can and are doing for people with Down Syndrome. Educating the community and creating awareness is important for us all. Sadly, some children are not taken out of the house and there are still some parents who don’t like to say that they have a child with Down Syndrome. Change must begin at home and this change can and is supported by parents/relatives bringing their children regularly to the Association. With sufficient effective support, they too can achieve their goals just like anyone else. It is important to remember that while children and adults with Down syndrome
experience developmental delays, they also have many talents and gifts and should be given the opportunity and encouragement to develop them. In the Western World, some high school graduates with Down syndrome participate in post-secondary education and many adults with Down syndrome are capable of working in the community, but some require a more structured environment

of the current facility in Azaiba for invited guests. This event would also coincide with one-year anniversary of the Association; it received its present status from the Ministry of Social Development last year. On the agenda of the day’s activities is the auction of paintings from renowned artists and a farmhouse party for families of children with Down Syndrome.
Some do’s and don’ts to follow: Do’s z Be patient to their needs z Be considerate with what they are trying to achieve z Don’t stare z Think positively Don’ts z Never ever say Mongolia; they are not people of Mongolia. Down syndrome is not related to race or nationality. z Dr. John Langdon Down first described Down Syndrome in 1866, but he neither had it, nor ‘owned’ the syndrome so it should not take on the possessive form of Down’s syndrome They are not even individuals’ with Down’s. They are people first who happen to be born with Down Syndrome. You should say a person/ baby/child with Down Syndrome. z They are not retarded or mad. They have a learning disability. Don’t call them mad.

the cityscape on one side. As the menu notes, ‘Inspired by the rustic cuisine of Beirut’s distinct neighbourhoods, Bab Idris (a part of Hot Star LLC), is an invitation to a re-imagined Lebanese culinary journey rich in tradition and hospitality.’ While the focus of the menu is on presenting authentic Lebanese cuisine, Head Chef Elias Saoud has integrated it with his touch of fusion that is enviable in its creativity and presentation, without affecting the authentic flavours. Like the ‘Fekharit Cherry Kebabs’... Bab Idris menu is woven around the original techniques and recipes that have been carried down since ages; yet, it is unique in its taste, be it the mezzes, salads, grilled items or gourmet meals. Our Lebanese culinary journey at Bab Idris began with ‘Traditional Coolers’. The drinks were accompanied by a complimentary platter of breads and dips, which succinctly provide a peek
into the special fare packed in the menu. Soon, we were stumped with the seemingly endless flow off cold and hot mezzes... The cold mezze section is predominantly vegetarian and the options looked very healthy as we tucked into the ‘Bab Idris Salad’ featuring a combination of garden cress with feta cheese, fresh chicory, spinach, eggplant makdous (oil cured eggplants), cherry tomato, beetroot and onion juliennes; ‘Houmous’; ‘Warak Enab’, a platter of vine leaf rolls; ‘Hindbeh’, a dish of sautéed chicory with onion; and ‘Loubieh B’zeit’. Our cold mezze also included ‘Basterma Labneh Rolls’ - thin slices of smoked beef fillet. From the hot mezze section we sampled ‘Batata Bil Kizbara’, a dish of fried potato cubes – a must try for all potato lovers; and ‘Ma’loubit Halloum’, a dish of grilled halloumi with breaded eggplant.
As mentioned earlier, ‘Fekharit Cherry Kebab’, served in a heavy black tray, was a clear reflection of Chef Elias’ fusion touch in the menu. Traditional kebabs are presented in a modern garb with cherries to accentuate creative liberties of the culinary kind. This dish of kebab balls sautéed in cherry sauce and topped with pine nuts is all about novelty in taste and flavours. The special ‘Shrimp Fatte’, featuring tiger prawns in a creamy dish of yogurt and tahini, is one for every seafood lover. To finish the seemingly never ending meal, we savoured the ‘Trio Bab Idris’, a combination of meghli (floured rice pudding), aish al saraya (bread pudding) and crème caramel, followed by ‘Osmalieh Rolls’. These golden crispy sweet vermicelli rolls, packed with fresh Lebanese ashta (clotted cream) and served with oriental syrup is just what you need to finish a meal with a grand finale

In a televised recording during the Panorama launch, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor stated, “I am so happy that this new outlet at the Panorama Mall is guaranteed to create the same kind of wave that the first one did. Mazaya Group and the team have created, with a lot of hard work, the success that Wave has seen. I am sure this outlet also will see similar success.” Diners at The Yellow Chilli restaurant at Almouj Muscat have savoured Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s signature dishes such as Peru Peyala (guava juice, lemon juice with a hint of mint and rimmed with red chillies), Lalla Mussa Dal (black lentil believed to have originated at the Lalla Mussa station in the North Western Frontier Province), Tandoori Basil Prawns and Shaam Savera (spinach koftas filled with creamed cottage cheese, served in a tomato butter gravy) which was one of the first dishes created by Chef Kapoor on his TV show that went on to become extremely popular. Workout
Exercise is meant to make us feel energetic and nd not exhausted, maintains Anu Bahl, Dietician and Clinical Nutritionist, as she points out ways to strike the right balance
W
hy do some of us look refreshed even after working out while rest just drag through the day? When we exercise, the heart pumps faster, as the oxygen demand increases; body requires energy which comes first from breakdown of glycogen (chain of glucose),then from fat and, if required, protein. Muscles contract and relax 10 times faster. So the reserves of carbohydrates, fats and protein deplete. Moderate to vigorous exercise increases the loss of some minerals, mostly through sweat.
Why do we feel tired?
If we feel exhausted all the time, that means either we are overdoing our body’s capacity or we are undernourished. Undernourished does not mean we need to increase our overall food intake; we just need to learn what our body requires before and after doing a workout. It can be as simple as a glass of water or electrolytes or a complex c a r b packed mini meal.
It depends on the type of workout. out. So als as it’s important to define our goals m our to what we want to achieve from workout and that defines what should hould be our pre- and post-workout meal. eal.
Pre workout nutrition:
By eating before workout we increase our energy, which allows us to workout longer and at a higher intensity level. The first source our body needs to get energy is Carbohydrates. The key is to have a mixed bag of complex and simple ones, so that the release of energy during the workout is slow and steady. Some common foods which serve as pre-workout snacks: (40 to 50gm of carbs) z Whole wheat toast with some fruit juice z One whole apple or Banana z Oats and some fresh fruit z Smoothies – fruit, Greek yoghurt and oatmeal, if you like it thick.
Post work out nutrition:
The importance of eating after a workout is to restore the energy lost during the workout. Plus, to rebuild muscles, fuelling them with food is an excellent way to do that. We can rebuild the tissue that breaks down
during a workout within d i k t by b eating ti ithi 45 minutes to 1 hour after workout. Post workout, our body requires lot of different nutrition. Some common post workout snacks: z Banana Smoothie with nuts z Whole wheat bread with peanut butter z Whole wheat bread with vegetable omlette z Whole wheat pasta with veggies and low fat cheese z Chocolate milk shake with walnuts and almonds z Grilled Salmon with sweet potato z Tuna sandwich with veggies and flax seeds z Protein bars and shakes The above mentioned snacks are for general running to high intensity training, but if you are an athlete or working out for some particular reason you need a more specific diet. Water is required for both pre and post workout so keep yourself hydrated

explore OMAN
Extreme sports athlete Graham Dickinson, who has around thousand BASE jumps to his credit, demonstrated Oman’s potential for BASE jumping with a daring jump from Al Hajar Mountain Cliff
On the WINGS of adventure
“My experience in Oman was nothing short of amazing,” said Graham Dickinson, following his daredevil jump from Al Hajar Mountains in November last year. The ‘Threat Level Midnight’ wingsuit BASE (Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth) jump, captured in a two-minute long video, shows him in nerve racking manoeuvres as he whizzes around sharp edges and rocky ledges. His interest in Oman was sparked by the striking geographical terrain, featuring some of the highest peaks, which, according to him, looks and feels very similar to the Grand Canyon. “I definitely put Oman on the BASE jumping map. Time will only tell if others will follow,” he said in an email interview. This was the first wingsuit jump in Oman and Graham sees a lot of potential, as the country is endowed with several tall mountain ranges. He flew at speeds of upwards to 200km/h and has everything nice to say about his experience and Oman. “BASE jumpers generally only go on trips to where they are welcomed and wanted; since Oman has some of the friendliest people I have met, I have a feeling that this will most definitely not be a problem,” he maintains.
34
February 2016
However, he hastens to point out the dangers and difficulties involved in taking up the sport here. “Other BASE jumpers are definitely interested but to find all these exit points, hike, scout, drive, explore and figure everything out will be a little bit difficult for the average jumper. Maybe more
experienced jumpers would consider it... The reason why most of them have not is because very few jumpers do what I just did. It consumes your life and takes control of you. To do this either takes a helicopter or someone with a great deal of focus and hard work,” he states.
or how much money you had; in the sky everyone is equal. I was inspired to turn away from the traditional life of office work and 9-5 jobs that many in my school were headed towards and instead embrace living a life less ordinary,” he states. He began working as a Wing Suit/ Tracking Coach and Tandem instructor, moving to several places such as Dubai, California, Canada and Australia. “I also teach, coach, instruct, mentor, aerial photography and help out anyone who needs it...” he
adds, pointing out that he is currently in Switzerland filming a commercial over the Eiger, wingsuiting around some of the tallest peaks in the world. He has done over 4,000 skydives and just under 1,000 base jumps all over the world and has been overly impressed by Oman. He says: “When I came to Oman I realised this place fits me well. Everyone is no nice and welcoming... The scenery and mountains are like nothing I have ever seen in my life; I will always come back to this beautiful country no matter where my travels take me.”
explore OMAN
This adrenaline pumping sport is both dangerous and awe inspiring. It involves timing and precision in landing. For the uninitiated, wingsuit flying or wingsuiting is the sport of flying through the air using a wingsuit, which adds surface area to the human body to enable a significant increase in lift. A wingusit flight normally ends by deploying a parachute; the wingsuit flier wears parachute equipment specially designed for skydiving or BASE jumping. “It is time to pull the parachute when you are 200ft from the ground, sometimes a little less sometimes a little more,” he states. A native of Canada, he has dedicated all his time and effort to BASE jump; air sports and everything outdoors have been a passion with Graham since he was young. He began skydiving at the age of 18 and base jumping at the age of 22 after his brother agreed to take him on his first antenna jump. He hasn’t turned back since. “I was inspired by the people I met and the lifestyle that the drop zone offered me; a life of simplicity, a life of fun. It was the one place where it didn’t matter what you did for a living

However, their impact is short lived and it is seen as a last resort when you have no time for a facial before a party. But this GlamGlow GravityMud facemask might just prove otherwise. It is a peel-off mask that dries to a futuristically shiny silver colour. It comprises ingredients like Vizitight to firm skin with algae and polymers and Lunarlift to

Your ‘Magic Cream’
If weather has proven to be the biggest bane of your skin, you might want to get your hands on Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘magic cream’ moisturiser. Her secret ingredient is the BioNYmph Peptide Complex, which stimulates collagen production, fights free radicals, smoothes wrinkles and plumps up the skin; its hyaluronic acid booster shield soaks the skin in moisture.
Cat Eye
No cat eye makeup can be complete without a swipe of mascara to finish the look, right? Now, you have an easy new way to get that perfect finish with this first of its kind, cat-eye-specific mascara. The ‘Wet N Wild Max Fanatic Cat Eye Mascara’, designed with a tapered fan brush, is perfect for defining the outer lashes prominently.
Lip therapy in a tin
Loyal patrons of Vaseline certainly do not need any convincing about its vast potentials as a balm for dry and flaky skin. Now with these new little Vaseline Lip Therapy Tins, even sceptics would be persuaded to try it on their winter lips. The little tins, which come in four different formulas (original, rosy, cocoa butter and aloe), are packed with the same non-greasy balm to moisturise dry lips. The tins are handy and can be carried along in your bag.
Water cleanser
No time for skin care routine before you step out in the morning? Well, you could now add this Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water in your beauty-shopping list. This Micellar water is a do-it-all cleanser that is designed to save time while providing you with all the benefits of a cleanser. t first glance it might look unkempt and neglected, but if you know how to give your bushy eyebrows that natural look, you could manage the trendy high brow look with ease. The stress is on making your brows look natural, without resorting to any artificial quick fixes. Maintain the thickness without letting it become a riot on your forehead. And that means keeping the sides clean and the line neat. You would have to remove/pluck out hairs that are growing out of your natural line. Define the shape and overstretch the natural appearance of the arch of the eyebrows. These mannish eyebrows demand attention and makeup expertise to look trendy. If the hair on your brow has its own mind and tends to demonstrate a carefree attitude by standing askance, you might need to fix it with some gel (which are usually in the same form as mascara) to get a flawless result. Use a small brow brush to bold it all in place. If you have thick eyebrows, you can get the arch in your eyebrows with small pencil strokes. Choose a shade that is close to the natural shade and blend well for a softer effect. Remember to brush your eyebrows from base to tip in the direction of the hair growth, before redrawing the line with a pencil. This will help fill the sparse areas and give a uniform look to the brows. Use the brush again to blend the colour perfectly.

ARE MUSICIANS TAKING OVER FASHION? ERYKAH BAYDU STYLED RIHANNA JOINED FORCES WITH PUMA AND KANYE TOOK ADIDAS TO THE GARDEN ... ARE MUSICIANS THE NEW SALES POINT IN FASHION, ASKS ALE ZADJALE New York Fashion Week just recently wrapped up and the first thing I noticed was the spiked rise in musicals featured in the creative side of the collections. Sure you still had a slew of A-listers, the Kardashians and the one and only Anna Wintour all seated front row at fashion shows, but this season showed us more than that, fashion brands are opting for a new sales point, using musicians. Pyer Moss recruited Erykah Badu for their runway show; she styled all the looks and models before they headed to the runway. Puma, an obviously struggling brand, recruited Rihanna who released her Puma Fenty collection in a display of grotesque and uninspired designs. Kanye West took his Adidas collaboration to the next level when he booked Madison Square Garden for a full show with models that had absurd rules including banning them from making eye contact and remembering that they’re a ‘picture’ (for 2 hours straight.) Personally, I don’t think this is the best thing because it’s giving us...trash. I think fashion is expressive and all but ‘less is more’ doesn’t mean rip the clothes and sell them at absurd sky high prices. What about you? Are you here for musicians taking over fashion?

Right pair of jeans, that is. If your mom has been making do with baggy ones to feel comfortable or thinks the skinny affair is a little too loud for her taste, opt for well-cut, cuffed ‘boyfriend jeans’. Naturally curvy mom would look perfect in high waist jeans, making her legs look long and lean. But if she wants to play it down, the wide leg pair in which the leg width stays the same from waist to toe would work fine. Look out for a dark, inky wash pair, with contrast stitching that will make it look modern.

Driving into the vast sandy deserts of Sharqiya Sands, the most popular tourist destination in Oman, is about capturing its kaleidoscopic vistas, which, in sync with the sun, create scenic backdrops that alter from dry noontime terrain to dramatic golden dunes in the evening. Sitting behind the wheel of Mitsubishi Pajero and driving along this picturesque place is a treat for every visitor. The 2015-2016 series, which began in November 2015, comprised of several two-day trips and saw over 1,125 participating in over 225 Mitsubishi Pajeros, over all the trips into the vast

Relatively SPEAKING
What is your happiness quotient? ‘It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.’ - Dale Carnegie Happiness is a state of mind. Agree?
With psychologists arguing the significance of perception, placing the premise on the ‘glass-half-full’ or ‘half-empty’ concept, happiness is surely about your thoughts and attitudes, right? Studies have shown that our physical wellbeing and mental health are working in tandem with an optimistic attitude to all things life and living. But how do you determine your level of optimism, rather, how do you gauge your perspectives and identify the values that can propel you on to the happiness platform?
Here’s a mini guide to get you there: Buy happiness
This does contradict the clichéd ‘money can’t buy happiness’ adage; but the idea is not to encourage splurging money on superfluous items that add to your social status, as much as it is about the sense of control that money can impart. It is about how money can turn specific events and situations into happiness factors... Like spending it on incorporating a healthy environment, staying in closer contact with family and friends, donating to important causes and getting experiences that will help understand life and the world better, among others.
Be grateful
Cultivate the spirit of gratitude and learn to say ‘Thank you’. While motivational speakers and writers have delineated the importance of gratitude in our lives, at various forums, it is the element of happiness pegged on to an attitude of gratitude that is under focus here. As experts suggest, list a few things that make you feel grateful and see how it will shift you away from bitterness and despair, while promoting happiness.
Forgive…
Studies have demonstrated the ill effects of holding grudges and nursing grievances, both on mind and body, taking a heavy toll on general happiness. This is why you need to foster forgiveness and forge the right way ahead. Remember, the alternative to forgiveness is mulling over a transgression, which can easily manifest as chronic stress.

Connect with friends
Close friendships are synonymous with happiness. When you share a special connect with your friends and make time to bond and network regularly, your happiness quotient will be positive. A study compiling top regrets of the dying, found that staying in touch with friends and family was one of the top five.
Be positive
As a psychologist pointed out, it is all about maintaining your mental hygiene by thwarting negative thoughts and feelings. Consider learning relaxation techniques or practicing meditation to release tension, suppress anxiety and promote quietude in your thoughts and actions. This will help you recognise and challenge thoughts that you have about your feelings of inadequacy and helplessness.
Workout daily
Make time to exercise; it not only ensures your fitness, but also spurs those happiness buds to bloom in your life. According to experts, exercise has such a profound effect on our happiness and well being that it is an effective strategy for overcoming even depression. It can help you relax, increase your brainpower, and even improve your body image, even if you don’t lose any weight.
Relatively SPEAKING Sleep, sleep, sleep…
Well, not immoderately, but you need enough sleep to be less sensitive to negative emotions. Sleep not only helps your body to repair, it also has a big role to play in your happiness factor. An earlier study has found that sleep-deprived people fail to recall pleasant memories, while easily recalling gloomy memories. Besides, how well and how long you sleep is also said to have an effect on how you feel on waking up.
Engage in meaningful activities When
the
mind
is
thoroughly
absorbed in a meaningful task you are in a ‘flow’ that sets your adrenaline pumping. The stress is on active leisure, which demands an initial investment of attention to make it enjoyable and happiness inducing.
Get outdoors
Fresh air has some inherent happiness qualities packed in it. One study found that spending 20 minutes outside in good weather boosts positive mood and also broadens thinking and improves working memory. Another study learnt that people are substantially happier outdoors in all natural environments than they were in urban environments.
Volunteer
Help others and indulge in the aftermath of its pleasant emotions. ‘Prosocial spending’, or spending money on other people, is said to boost happiness. According to one expert, dedicating 100 hours a year to helping others can bring about a positive turn in your life. Scientists have also found that engaging in acts of kindness produces the single most reliable momentary increase in the well being of a person
International Day of Happiness Date: Sunday, March 20, 2016 Objective: International Day of Happiness aims to promote the idea that the pursuit of happiness is universal. The day recognises that happiness is a fundamental human goal, and calls upon countries to approach public policies in ways that improve the well being of all peoples. By designating a special day for happiness, the UN aims to focus world attention on the idea that economic growth must be inclusive, equitable, and balanced, such that it promotes sustainable development, and alleviates poverty.

Talking Business
SMEs are key contributors to economic growth as well as a major source for job creation. SME SPECIAL
WATCH FACES COME ALIVE.
Becoming Entrepreneurs All SMEs, whether taking the traditional route or daring to be different and innovative, need to know the basics of entrepreneurship Brand creation
The difference between two similar businesses lies in the skills of the entrepreneur in creating his/her brand. Identifying, formulating and effectively communicating ones brand is the crux of business success. It can be used to differentiate your business from the competitors, to attract customers and to help build customer loyalty.
Actions, not words
Success of any business is dependent on the credibility one has built. A big part of building credibility in the business world relies on how you, as an entrepreneur, have used funds from investors.
Focus on cash flow
Business is all about planning and managing the cash flow carefully. Studies have shown that overzealous spending and bloated business costs are common causes for failure, which are, however, seen to arise more from poor planning than anything else. Understanding the costs of launching, maintaining and expanding a company is essential.

SME SPECIAL
Understand the business culture
SME development is all about initiating a culture change. Entrepreneurs need to understand the culture of investment where a business is based. This will help to plan the cash flow more effectively, thus creating a financial buffer for any issues that may arise. Being in tune with local business culture is also essential.
Ideate
Remember, not all good business ideas are complicated, and not all complicated business ideas are good. If the business you plan to launch doesn’t bring a new idea or provide a fresh perspective on an existing one, then the chances of success may be slim. This puts the onus on you to understand the needs of your community; ensure that there is a need for your product/service, real or artificial.
See and learn
Learning about success from successful people is the biggest lesson an entrepreneur could learn. Read, learn and understand from the experiences of the world’s business giants.
Customer base
Success is assured when you satisfy and exceed your customers’ expectations. Make your business culture customer-centric; happy customers will come back and stay loyal to you.
Listen…
Great entrepreneurs spend time listening and absorbing what other people say, whether it be customers, employees, suppliers, or advisors, and use their judgment to decide what actions to take based on what they have heard.
Self-improvisation
Do not allow complacency to rear its head. There is always room for improvement. Remember, self-improvement is a great method of personal development. Think about what you have done, what you have said, how you have done it, the impact it’s had, and work out how it can be better next time.

Totaling more than 18 stores, the Silk Route has retailers who are steeped in history and tradition, offering products and services from a wide range of categories, including fragrances, carpets, cosmetics, jewels and pearls, footwear and apparel, honey, sweets, healthcare and more. The Oman Avenues Mall Management team recognised early that Omani SME’s need a kick start, so the Silk Route was designed and built as a way of providing support to them. Each of them has delightful products and services with fascinating stories to tell. Our team strives to ensure that the Oman Avenues Mall truly is a place for all, and the success
of the Silk Route simply shows another way in which we’re achieving this goal.” Majid Al Sinani, owner of Tmrya Chocolates store and 7 Brothers Footwear store stated that having the opportunity to occupy two shops in one of the busiest malls in Oman has been hugely helpful in starting up his SME business. Arif Mohamed Musaid, owner of East Carpets pointed out that being in the Oman Avenues Mall has provided him the opportunity to connect with many new customers and different segments of the market that we might not have had the chance to in another location Mohamed, owner of Anhar Honey commented: “The Silk Route is the ideal location for operators with authentic gourmet products like me...and being located at the Oman Avenues Mall has meant that more people get to sample and try them.” The Oman Avenues Mall which opened in May 2015 is the largest mall in Oman and features more than 200 shops, restaurants and entertainment outlets. Just TRAVEL
Want to see the world before you die? You are not alone… Call it a cherished dream or, perhaps, a quixotic idea, travelling around the world to see what others have seen and do what they did, seems to underscore the bucket list of many. And with Facebook providing all the space needed, and more, for members to graphically display their travel conquests, the desire to savour the seemingly obvious joys of travelling the world has become ravenous. There is, obviously, something exceptional about a round-the-world trip that so many want to do it, some time or the other in their lifespan. But budget and, of course, work pressures are the typical constraints in realising this quest for world travel. For any trip, leave alone one that centres on flying around the world, is demanding on finances and the time. While travel experts are quick on the draw to allay the fears of budget and propose various packages to fulfil this innate desire to travel the world, it is, undeniably, a colossal project, one that requires meticulous planning and preparation. So, where do you begin?
...With planning
Popular destinations are the obvious choices listed in most round-the-world trips. But wait… your travel itinerary doesn’t have to be a copy of anyone. Simply draw up a list of destinations and shortlist the ones that you definitely want to see. Open a world map and identify the places listed on it to assess the most convenient and easiest route to follow, depending on your choice to

either fly or travel overland. How you travel could also be dependent on your budget and the kind of trip you want to experience.
Budget wisely
It is best to plan and revise your budget in the initial stages itself so that you are not cash-strapped in a foreign land.
Having said that though, do not over plan; nothing kills a trip as much as over-planning. An element of flexibility will help you accommodate changes even at the eleventh hour.
More tips: While preparing the budget plan, list out the amount that would go for your flight and transport costs. Remember: how much money you would need will also depend on the accommodation you shortlist, in addition to the costs of insurance, visas, vaccinations and other travel essentials. However, even after careful budgeting, it might not be possible to arrive at an accurate figure, as there are many variables that are bound to affect your spending. It is almost impossible to foresee every expense that may crop up during the entire period, so make conservative estimates and, if possible, create a detailed breakdown of your trip costs.
Flight options
According to an online resource, the most economical way to travel on a trip of this magnitude is to book a round-the-world flight - a multi-stop ticket that is based on airline alliance. Although fares in this flight have conditions attached with some rules and restrictions, you could make the best of this option by ensuring that your route is in a continuous global direction. Confer with your travel agent or some tour consultant on how you could make alterations in your route plan to cut down on your budget.
-
-
– -
Prepare a breakup of average daily cost in all the different destinations. Check out vaccination requirements in your selected destinations. Pack as little as possible; lugging all the bags through different travel points could prove to be a nuisance. Be ready for unexpected challenges that may crop up. Buy a portable charger to carry along for all your electrical items. Be flexible about your travel dates if it means saving or cutting costs. mid-week flights are generally cheaper. Do not miss your booked flights as your airline might cancel your subsequent flights to other destinations
Trip duration
A few days or a couple of months‌? The time you reserve for your world trip is dependent on the kind of trip you have in your mind. If it is simply about travelling non-stop to tick it on your bucket list, you could have your dream fulfilled in a few days time. But if it is the essence of adventure that drives you on and you want to experience every destination in its full glory, save a month or two for the trip. You could accumulate your annual leave and work overtime, if the option exists, to accrue more holidays. And, if you are brave and are determined about your plans, you could even take a yearlong sabbatical from whatever you are doing to realise your dream. On the practical side, chalk out your travel route and do some online research to assess how many days you would need for the entire trip. Like money, time is also at a premium when you are planning a magnum opus of a trip.

Hair
we go… Have luxuriant hair and want to get the perfectly coiffured look? Check out the trends that are making waves this year
A revival of vintage hairstyles is in order this year, as men’s hair trends get set to recreate newer dimensions. Interestingly, the styles expected to make waves this year are perfect for every kind of hair - whether you have a full body to boast or are faced with the prospect of lank hair growth.
The 50s slick look
Go for that distinctive fifties hair style. Pick up a good quality hair gel or a mousse to add shine and sleek look that is reminiscent of the ‘50s decade. You could keep things simple by opting for a shiny slicked back look or go all out with a fifties parting that has a voluminous feature pegged on to it. Simply comb through your hair lightly to infuse a bit of texture into it.
The classic side part
The side part look has a classic timeless appeal about it, but if you are looking to get trendy, there are several reinvented options to check out. And,

what is more, this is one trend that can suit men with all types of hair. Work matte mousse into your hair before blow drying to get the right style. You could even experiment with different hair partings to personalise the style. Those with thick hair have a better chance of making this a winning style. And, if you want a more sophisticated look, go for a wet look; if you have longer hair, you could leave it relaxed on one side and across your forehead.
The pompadour style
The good old pompadour is enjoying a revival of sorts, with a more textured look. Simply keep the sides of your hair really short, while ensuring that the top is longer for a more
The fringe touch
This style is more apt if you have straighter and longer hair, as the focus is on texture and dimension. Go for a versatile hair mousse or pomade to get a bit more control when trying out this style.
The textured quiff
This is not a novel trend, as you would have seen it making its presence felt, on and off, in different variations. But this time around, get adventurous with a textured quiff. With right products, you could easily create this style, as it is only about adding depth and life to your hair. Get a sharp cut around the back and sides, while leaving a lot of height on top; then grab your hair at the sides of the crown and pull it up and twist the hair slightly.
The man bob
When the pony-tailed man decides to open things up, you get the man bob. Last year, the style was on letting the hair grow below the collar bone, but
this year around, it will be cropped just below the shoulders for a neater and sleeker look. This will make the hair look fuller and, well, neater. Ensure that the ends are textured if you do not want to make it look too feminine.

voluminous dimension. But if you have curlier hair, you could achieve the style with a haircut that will give a better proportion to your length.
The military look
Go short...that’s the message behind this military look. Keep it really tight at the back and sides, with a crop on top. It’s simple and easy to style and has stood the test of time. But not everyone can pull this look, as it is more suitable for those with a more structured face shape. If you are endowed with a round or square shaped face, it could make your face look too block like.
The natural texture
Want a style that is a quick and easy? Go for the naturally textured style that has become popular in recent times. When getting a haircut, ask for natural layers to maximise the volume and texture as much as possible. After that, all that you need to do is moisten your hair and blow dry it flat, without affecting the natural wave of the hair.

Loggerhead Turtles subpopulation critically endangered An estimated 13,000 loggerhead females nest on Masirah Island annually,
Region’s first anti-fouling marine nano-coating Almouj Marina announced the successful results of a month long experiment to create environmentally friendly and technologically enhanced anti-fouling for vessels and other submerged structures. The unique field experiment, which was conducted in Almouj Marina, in partnership with researchers from Sultan Qaboos University, has successfully developed a non-toxic coating that has proven to be as effective as commercial anti-fouling paints without endangering the environment. The project, the first of its kind in the region, could help preserve Oman’s unique marine environment and save the maritime industry millions of USD annually. Biofouling is the colonisation of submerged surfaces by unwanted organisms such as bacteria, barnacles, and algae.
this number is below 30,000-40,000 females estimated in scientific research conducted around 20 years ago. The causes of reduction may be numerous, as marine turtles suffer high threats from both the beach environment (such as light pollution, coastal construction, vehicle movement and fishery activities) and the marine environment (such as fisheries bycatch and habitat degradation). Research led by global turtle experts in coordination with the Environment Society of Oman and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, suggests that Masirah Island hosts over 90 percent of the North West Indian Ocean Loggerhead subpopulation nests. The North West Indian Ocean Loggerhead subpopulation, which nests in Oman and Yemen, has been assessed as critically endangered, the highest threat category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

This new brain-interface tech could help those with paralysis regain the ability to walk. The tech consists of a stent-based electrode (referred to as a ‘stentrode’) which is planted within a blood vessel and positioned next to the brain. This stentrode monitors brain activity, identifies signals relating to the movement of muscles and limbs and sends that data direct to a bionic limb or linked exoskeleton. The team behind the strentrode is planning human trials next year; if these prove successful, this radical new brain link could soon be available to the public.

Abducted by aliens?
A retired carpenter has claimed that he was abducted by aliens while walking home from a Christmas party. Gerry Battles, 61, said he was taken by the extraterrestrials after going for festive drinks with a friend in Ireland. He said he was subsequently paralysed, faced by a ‘cone-headed’ alien and warned that the world will end in 850 years’ time. He also claimed that he was transported to the North Pole in the blink of an eye. After being drawn by the white light, Gerry remembers finding himself aboard a spacecraft with about 40 others — all in a subdued state, standing motionless like statues. Thos who do not believe his story are ‘naïve and have small imaginations,’ he says.

Tallest stack of pancakes Guinness World Records has confirmed that a British resort broke a world record with a 3-foot, 4-inch tall stack of pancakes. Chefs James Haywood and Dave Nicholls of Center Parcs Sherwood Forest in Rufford, England, cooked up 213 pancakes to create the record-breaking stack. A Guinness adjudicator was on hand to confirm the stack beat a 2-foot, 11-inch tall stack cooked up at the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands in October 2014. The record required 13 bags of flour, 360 eggs and 26 pints of milk, Guinness said.
