et ‘under the skin’, literally, as FACES takes the skincare route to unravel the fine line between beauty and the clichéd ‘beauty is only skin deep’ concept. With experts from the world of dermatology promoting the virtues of skincare in the face of health issues that reveal themselves on the skin, the cover story acts as a guideline, whether you are seeking healthy skin or are exploring your options to attain flawless skin. The diet followed and lifestyle adopted is brought under the scanner to highlight the importance of eating right and working out regularly.

A
s Christmas revelers around the world crooned ‘Last Christmas’ to the beats of the festive season, the news that the singer who gave the world that unforgettable song, way back in 1984, had died in his sleep on Christmas day, sent tidal waves of grief all around. George Michael had died of heart failure on December 25, 2016; he was found dead at his home in Oxfordshire on Christmas morning, by his partner. A statement by his publicist read: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.” His coterie of friends, including Elton John, Bob Geldof, Andrew Ridgeley, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford are now planning a tribute to the singer, who ruled the music world in the 80s and 90s. George Michael was known for his philanthropic spirit and had established an endearing connect with his musical genius as well as his little acts of charity. He was, however, private in his charity ventures, whether it was volunteering at a homeless shelter, paying for a woman’s fertility treatments or anonymously donating millions of dollars to charities like the Childline, a counseling service for children in the U.K. Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, on 25 June 1963, in East Finchley, London, Michael earned recognition,

very early on, as a singer, songwriter, and record producer. He rose to fame as a member of the music duo Wham! and is best known for his hit singles such as ‘Last Christmas’ and ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’. He was a teenager when he formed band Wham! with his high school friend Andrew Ridgeley; the duo went on to create their first major hit ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ in 1984. However, two years later, Michael went solo and released his hit debut album ‘Faith’, which has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. His other hit album ‘Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1’ was released in 1990. He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. To his credit are seven number one singles in the UK and eight number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, including ‘Careless Whispers’ and ‘Freedom! ‘90’. He ranks among the best-selling British acts of all time and as the 40th-most successful artist ever by Billboard magazine. He has won, among other awards, three Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, four Ivor Novello Awards, three American Music Awards, and two Grammy Awards from eight nominations. He believed in music completely. ‘I still believe that music is one of the greatest gifts that God gave to man,’ he is quoted to have said. It was a tribute to his genius that in 2004 the Radio Academy named him the most played artist on British radio between 1984 and 2004. He was outspoken and stood by his beliefs, using music as a platform to discuss issues that concerned him personally as well as those that affected the world at large. In a very short span of time he achieved what few even fail to conceive. And he was aware of that. As he’d said: “I’ve achieved what every
artist wants, which is that some of their work will outlive them.” His legacy of music and his philanthropy will live on forever!

Skin Deep ‘Save your skin’, literally, as experts from the world of dermatology explore the importance of healthy skin and shift the spotlight away from the obsessive quest for beauty
T
he clichéd ‘beauty is only skin deep’ may have proven to be an equaliser in the beauty-obsessed world of cosmetics, but the dictates of our time demand a modern approach to the desired ‘flawless skin’, as it defines the very paradigm of beauty in our world. The stress, obviously, is on skin and its endearing qualities to reflect beauty and even health. As Linden Tyler, beauty expert and Look Good Feel Better Educator commands, ‘invest in your skin…it is going to represent you for a very long time.’ But how does one go about defining healthy skin or finding the difference, if any, between healthy skin and flawless skin? With dermatologists zeroing in on the importance of skin in identifying a variety of health issues, the focus is on skincare, whether the motive is beauty or healthcare. Pointing out that skin is the largest organ of the body, Dr Ahmed Al Waily, Senior Consultant Dermatologist at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, warns that this organ is, generally, exposed to diseases, trauma and even apathy to skincare. “It reflects diseases inside the body, as sometimes the person has an internal disease, which can start with a skin complaint - for example, pruritus (itching),” he cautions, adding: “The person should seek medical advise if he has a skin complaint, especially if it is persistent and is worsening or has a mole which is changing from what it was before.”

be reflected in the skin… If a person loses weight, he/she gets loose skin with unsightly lines and he/she looks older for age. On the other hand, if he/she gains excess weight, then the effects are seen as unhealthy looking skin,” he describes.
Although there is no defined scientific term for a healthy skin, Dr. Waily notes that the skin is, generally, accepted as healthy if the person has no skin problem. “The skin is said to be healthy if it is smooth, has even colour and is well hydrated,” he adds.
For healthy skin, he suggests a diet that includes a balanced amount of healthy food, with attention to antioxidants such as vitamins C, E, A and Zinc.
Explaining the importance of diet in maintaining skin health, he points out that the skin renews itself every 28 days, making it imperative to supply it with a steady portion of nutrients, more so as this renewal is a continuous lifelong process. “Any alteration in the person’s diet can

cover STORY and the amount of ultraviolet rays exposure from the sun, he states. However, he hastens to add that there are diseases such as psoriasis, which affect equal number of people worldwide. “In this part of the world, we see more of sun exposure effects and less skin cancers compared to the west and Australia. This is because we have a natural protection from the sun induced skin cancers, especially melanoma,” explains Dr. Ahmed Waily. He agrees that cosmetic procedures are becoming a trend all over the world and growing into a multi-million dollar business, but he advices people seeking cosmetic procedures to press the caution button and exercise care. “One should take care in choosing the right medical centre, getting a proper examination and obtaining a consent written with proper explanations with percentage of improvement and side effects,” he advises, stressing on the need to read well about the specific procedure. “Also, do not overspend,” he counsels.

Skin Essentials Beauty, as an expression of one’s virtuous traits, may have a utopian feel to it, but in a looks-obsessed world, the concept of beauty is best understood on the premise of long established factors, one of which is skin. In the following interview, Dr. Ana Maria Anido Serrano*, a practicing dermatologist with more than 2 decades of experience in the field, expounds the physical elements of skin and the transient notes of beauty pegged on to it.
Is beauty connected to skin care?
There is a canon of beauty in which the society, in general, considers it as desirable and attractive. Beauty could vary between different cultures and could also change with time. When a person is categorised as beautiful or is deemed to have beauty, it is based on what society or the individual considers beautiful. It could encompass outer or inner beauty... While outer beauty
is manifested in ones physical characteristics, including overall fitness, symmetry of features, youth and sensuality, inner beauty is ruled by psychological factors such as integrity, personality, intelligence, elegance, grace, charm and the soul, which is reflected in honesty, love and compassion. All these factors are important and need to be taken into consideration when we talk about beauty. However, I believe that ‘beauty and skin care are connected’. At the time that we
are born, our skin is very delicate, but during the growing process and through the adult life, our body and our skin gets exposed to sunlight, contamination, pollution, hormonal changes during adolescence, diseases and the physiological changes that take place as a part of the normal ageing process, ending in dry skin, pigmentation, wrinkles, etc. This is why it is very important to take care of our skin in order to improve our appearance and reflect healthy and beautiful skin.
Could the old adage ‘Beauty is only skin deep’ have a wider perspective? As already mentioned, outer and inner beauty are closely related. In order to maintain or improve our beauty, we should take care of our bodies - both outer and inner. As we grow older, it is crucial to take more care of our skin, as normal ageing process changes our body both inside and outside. Ageing is a dynamic process of spontaneous and gradual change resulting in a sequence of maturation through childhood, puberty and adulthood, followed by a declining stage through middle and old age. On a general note, we can say that we have different types of ages: chronologic age based on the passage of time; biological age based on changes in the body that commonly occurs as people age; and normal age defined as a common complex of diseases and impairments that characterise many of the elderly. And, looking at all these aspects, yes, we can say ‘Beauty is only skin deep’. But when we consider the following two types of ageing - psychological age based on how people act and feel (the so-called ‘young at heart’, and successful ageing - then our ‘intrinsic’ (chronologic) and ‘extrinsic’ (environmental) ageing are proven to be closely related to our well-being and a need to maintain a youthful and energetic spirit with healthy diet and good lifestyle to assist us.

Healthy skin can be described or defined as soft skin, with a good texture, an excellent tactile sensation, and absence of pigmentation, uniform colour and tonicity.

How would you describe healthy skin and flawless skin?
Flawless skin is defined as perfect skin, with velvety and soft appearance, good texture, uniform colour, no pigmentation, very minimal pores, not oily and flaky, good hydration and endowed with a natural glow and firmness.
What is the role of diet in maintaining skin health? What are the foods (and ingredients) that are particularly bad for skin? Many studies have proven that the skin improves with a good healthy diet. As we say, ‘you are what you eat.’ There are, however, certain types of foods that are strongly related to healthy skin nails and hair. These include: l l l l

What are the different skin types and what are the requirements for each type as far as health and ageing is concerned?
The classification of the four skin biotypes is mainly based on the balance between the sebaceous and sweat secretion on the skin, as mentioned in the following: Normal skin, also known as eudermic skin, has a perfect hydration. There is a balance between sweat and sebum secretion; it is characterised by a smooth and soft uniform colour, pores are mildly visible and the texture is fine. Oily skin has a high production of sebum. It is best described as an oily shining skin, thick texture, dilated pores, tendency of forming comedones and late appearance of wrinkles.
Bad habits and unhealthy foods that can cause damage to the skin and early ageing are stress, alcohol, smoking, caffeine, fast and junk foods, soft drinks, diets rich in sugars and saturated fat, excessive exposure to sunlight, constipation and hormonal problems.

Dry skin is one where there is less production of sebum than the normal skin and is characterised by a very thin texture; it is not shiny, is rough, pores are less visible with mild flaking; it gets easily irritated, is sensitive to soaps and has a tendency to an early appearance of wrinkles. Combination skin means mixed skin types - more commonly the oily and dry type. There are other types of skin, such as sensitive and dehydrated skin. Sensitive skin easily reacts when exposed to heat, cold, poor nutrition, stress, smoking, air conditioning and pollution, while dehydrated skin is characterised by a reduction of water component, with a normal or increased production of sebum. There is, however, a rule that applies to all skin types, and that is daily cleansing of the skin to eliminate dead cells, sweat, sebum, microorganisms and contaminants from the environment. It is very significant to take into consideration the right selection of products and application of moisturisers to different skin types. l
l
l l
It is, generally, advisable to avoid products containing alcohol, organic solvents or detergents to avoid dehydrating the skin. In case of oily skin, the advice is to use products that regulate the amount of sebum without dehydrating the skin - products with a light fluid, thin lotions and liquid or gel texture. For sensitive skin, reduce the use of soaps, in case you cannot avoidance using it, choose a mild soap without preservatives or perfumes. For a combination skin, you need to use combined products for oily and dry skin. For dry skin, use cream, rich lotions or products with a velvety texture
It is recommended to use sunblock, follow a well-balanced diet, with appropriate intake of water and maintain a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise. In using of cosmetics, it is recommended to opt for those combined with moisturisers, and which correlate with your age.
What are the damages wrought by the sun on the skin and what is needed to minimise its effects? Could you explain the need for sunscreen in skin care?
The major effects on the skin are due to UV (ultraviolet) radiation, which is divided into 3 types – UVA (320-400nm), it is further subdivided as UVA1 (340-400nm) and UVA2 (320340nm); UVB (290-320nm); and UVC (9270-290nm).
The effects of UV radiation are cumulative and irreversible. The short-term side effects are erythema, burns or pigmentation. Long-term side effects are early ageing and carcinogenesis or tendency to develop skin cancers. Use of sunscreen will help minimise side effects of UV radiation. Other measures could be use of umbrellas, hat, sunglasses, excessive sun exposure, mainly during peak radiation hours (11am-4pm), early use of photo-protection and use of sunblock in children (but not in children less than 6 months age due to possible toxicity when absorbed through the skin because they have a larger skin surface area) and limited exposure to sunlight in children below 3 years of age. Sunscreen is an important component in skin care; it is recommended to use SPF 30 or greater, as its helps to keep the skin younger and healthy, reduce the development of skin cancer and slow the extrinsic or environmental ageing.

Up Close & Personal With The Home I grew up in… I was born and brought up in Kerala. I lived in a small village in a place named Narikkuni, Calicut. My school was about 30 minutes away from my home and I walked all my way to school. Those days were the most memorable to me. The Moment that changed me forever… It was probably when I started my career in Malabar Gold & Diamonds, knowing different people from various places and interacting with them was a great learning experience.
“I always focused on my work and believed in perfection in everything I did. I had a vision that I set out to achieve,”

A native of Narikuni in Kerala, he credits his father, who was a teacher, for instilling in him a love for learning. “My father has always pushed me forward; he encouraged me to study and did everything to give me all the necessary education for my future success,” he points out.
Najeeb K.
My greatest inspiration… I love to meet people, interact with them and, I would say, that meeting new people each day is something that excites me and inspires me. Last, but not the least, my family is my greatest inspiration. My hero… My parents have played such a big role in my life, given me strength in all the ups and downs of my life; also my teachers and superiors who were always with me.
My Success Mantra… The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have given our best to the task. In 10years time, I hope to be… Throughout my life, I have always wanted to become a successful businessman and make something great and valuable for my future; something that would make my family feel much happier than it feels now.

isplaying examples of traditional arts such as calligraphy and marbling, as well as examples of contemporary Turkish arts, ‘Infinity Time’ embraces a concept beyond that of a traditional exhibition. The exhibits have been curated by selecting some of the most outstanding pieces in the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey art collection. What it aims to achieve is not merely a glittering show of works of art promoted by dazzling advertising and other means; instead,
it offers a common intellectual ground for the viewer and the works of art. The relationship between the traditional and the contemporary is crucial to this exhibition. ‘Infinity Time’ is founded upon innovation, beauty, the ancient and historic memory, and it points to the continuity and eternal nature of the aura contained between the phenomenon of perception and the viewer. This experience also reveals the development of Turkish art and the dynamic nature of traditional arts. The ‘Infinity Time’ exhibits have been selected from a large number
of artists, including Adnan Çoker, who focuses on absolute balances through an exploration of Islamic architecture, and the inimitable skill of Alparslan Babaoglu that creates infinite harmony in calligraphy and marbling, to name but a couple. The exhibition was formally opened on 7 December, jointly by Murat Uysal, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, H. E.Atılay Ersan, Turkish Ambassador to Oman, and Dr. Mohammed Al Shahi, General Manager of the Bait Al Zubair Foundation; it will be on till the 7th of February 2017

18-year old Haitham Al Hadidi, a first time competitor, was crowned the ‘King of Drift’ after a stellar performance (390 points) at the Red Bull Car Park Drift Final, held earlier this month at Port Sultan Qaboos. “I feel so happy, I really wasn’t expecting to win. It’s fantastic that this year it was an all-Omani podium,” he gushed after grabbing the top spot. Interestingly, Hadidi got his driver’s licence only three months ago; he credits his win to his determination and his dream to put Oman on the map for drifting and motorsports. The Red Bull Car Park Drift Final, which was held at a special drifting track created at Port Sultan Qaboos, has been described as the biggest motorsports event ever hosted in Oman. It was held under the patronage of H.H Sayyid Taimur bin Assad Al-Said in association with the Oman Automobile Association. The participants represented the best of drifting talent from Qatar, Kuwait, Mauritius, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi

For long-time national champion Ali ‘Lalou’ Al Balushi, it was a bittersweet result; he took home second place (386 points) for the second consecutive Red Bull Car Park Drift Final. But he said he was happy to have maintained his performance for three years in a row at the Red Bull Car Park Drift. “I am happy that today was a celebration of Omani talent on the podium…I didn’t expect it at all,” he quipped. However Tarek Al Shaihani, who took third place (313 points), said: “I predicted that this year all the Omani drivers would reach the podium. We trained hard and we dedicate this win to the people of Oman.” The event was judged by international drifting stars Kenshiro Gushi (youngest competitor of the D1 Grand Prix of Japan), Dai Yoshihara (2011 Formula Drift Series Champion), Haitham Al Hadidi
Aleksandr Grinchuk (three-time Ukrainian national champion) and Khalid Al Manji (Omani rally driver who has competed in over 70 rally events). Judging was focused on a range of different criteria, including drifting skills, car look, box, clipping point, pendulum, gate 1 and 2, car smoke and tire smoke. The demanding track, designed by rally champion and Red Bull athlete Abdo Feghali was complete with permanent crane structures that tested the drifting skills of the competitors on a new level

Reinvent your happiness quotient at Bistro 64, which has made ‘happy food’ its service mantra
T
asty… That’s the key word that Bistro 64 has imbued in all the elements of dining – whether it is the tastefully adorned foyer with its now famous angel wings presenting photo opportunities for diners, the dramatic dome skyline in the main seating area, the profusion of colours in vivid sketches on the walls, the al fresco dining area with its breezy ambience, the confluence of music and colour pops within, or the aromatic food that makes it to the table in eye-pleasing avatars. We knew we were in for a sensorial experience when the warm welcome at the door opened, literally, to a riot of colours - warm and bright hues that speak the language of creativity.

There is a youthful verve and vigour in all the little details packed into the restaurant and the staff know just how to translate it in the affairs of dining…even entertaining (as we found minutes into our luncheon rendezvous). Strains of guitar chords roused us from our comfortable seats and drew us to the central atrium where a corner section is devoted to
music aficionados. Our entertainer for the day was one of the waiters, who strummed guitar and sang popular songs that rang through the restaurant. We occupied the seats facing the front section of the lively Jawharat Qurum complex and enjoyed the laidback feel around the parking lot, facing the serene shoreline. There is a holiday

Happy Food at Bistro 64
feast ON feel about this section of the town that can easily transform even the busiest working day into a languorous one. Bistro 64’s vantage position, as the first outlet within the complex, makes it a perfect destination, with the added bonus of live music to enhance the experience. ‘Food for every mood’ is what the restaurant promises in its menu, which is creatively designed as a stack of gramophone records. Interesting pun-inspired dish names take the fun youthful element to a colourful realm. If food, indeed, had a happiness quotient it would be resplendent in the collage of colours at the new Bistro 64. We set our luncheon in motion with ‘Passion-It’, a tangy confluence of passion fruit and orange; ‘Red, red, mine’, a cooler with watermelon, mint, lime and fizz; a lime, mint and cucumber blend of ‘Feeling blue’; and ‘Biscky’, a rich shake with vanilla ice cream, milk and biscuits – the last
one is all that you would need to quell your hunger if you have a small appetite. But we are endowed with large appetites and we were ready for the big feast put on for us by the restaurant. The first to arrive was ‘Gunpowder’, an explosive starter on all counts. It is a mound of freshly cut hot potato fries served with beef chilli con carne, gunpowder sauce, cheddar cheese and jalapeno. We also savoured the vegetarian platter of gunpowder, which, as the menu reads, ‘the silent way’, is sans all meat. Although vegetarian options are limited, since the cuisine is mainly Italian and American, the kitchen is designed to cater to the demands of diners and dishes can be turned to suit different palates. The second act on our table had equally creative and zany names to keep our smile intact. We tucked into a dish named ‘Peppersome’ - a cute medley of red and yellow
bell peppers, packed with tuna and blue cheese sauce. The vegetarian in the group got the very crossborder named ‘Veg my pijja?’ - a thin crust pizza, served with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, zucchini, olives, mushroom, onion, capsicum, broccoli and cherry tomatoes. The ‘Big MissSteak’ that followed is a must try item for all meat lovers. This juicy steak, grilled with pepper steak sauce and served with roast baby potatoes, broccoli and cherry tomatoes is divine, to say the least. The perfectly grilled steak has the flavours that hit the foodie spot; it is sure to convert even fastidious diners. And for all other diners who are wont to reply ‘anything’ to the trite ‘what will you have?’ query, Bistro 64 has a dish that is titled just that - ‘Anything’. There is, however, nothing dismissive about ‘Anything.’ The creamy texture of the mashed potatoes, the crunchy sautéed vegetables and the succulent grilled chicken breast topped with mushroom sauce is an easy comfort food. ‘Anything’ is what we intend to ask for, at our next visit here… We finished our lunch with molten chocolate cake, which is yet to make it to the menu. Served with a helping of ice cream, the chocolate is best eaten warm to get that melt in the mouth feel. Happy food, indeed…

Health CHECK
Skin and Health Skin is an index of what is transpiring inside the body and, often, indicates the first signs of internal diseases
Skin is the largest organ in our body and has the potential to reveal a thing or two about our health. Dermatologists, in fact, are of the opinion that the changes – ranging from discolouration to some growth - on the skin could be indicative of a more serious health problem. However, the danger sign need be raised only when these changes persist, they advice.
Changes to watch out for include: l An unusual rash that does not respond to treatment or is accompanied by fever and aches and pains in the body – it could indicate an internal problem or infection. l A rash on the top of the feet or a purple rash on the lower legs that does not respond to topical medication could be hepatitis C infection. l Rash on the back of the neck or around the arms that is velvety to touch and is in a darker shade than your normal skin tone is a sign of your increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. l Rashes developed from an allergy to a new medicine could be a sign of a serious condition known as DRESS (Drug Reaction (or Rash) with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms) syndrome. l Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory muscle disease with notable skin changes, including a violet-coloured rash on the upper eyelids and in areas that are exposed to sunlight, and raised, scaly bumps on the knuckles. l New growth could be sign of skin cancer; certain tumours of the skin can be a sign of internal disease or a genetic syndrome. l Yellow or waxy looking bumps on the arms, legs or trunk

could be a sign of uncontrolled diabetes. l Yellowing of the skin can indicate liver disease. l Any noticeable darkening of creases in the skin, sun-exposed areas, joints and old scars, could be a sign of hormonal disease. l Bronzing of the skin in diabetes could be a sign of an inherited defect in iron metabolism. l Any unusual change in the texture – softening or hardening – of the skin could indicate an underlying medical problem. l Thickening of the skin on the shin could be indicative of high blood pressure and kidney problems. l Very dry and itchy skin could be a sign of hormonal problems. l Very loose and silky skin is a symptom of a rare connective tissue disease; it could signal blood cancers. l Changes in the colour and/or shape of the nails can also indicate deficiency or organ system issues (liver and kidney problems can sometimes cause changes in the nail colour).
Acne
This is the most common skin problem that affects a whopping 80 per cent of people, especially in the adolescent years. It is, however, treatable with over the counter medications or prescription drugs.
Eczema

Hives
Hives are those red bumps on the skin, which are often itchy. They are usually caused by an allergic reaction to a drug or food; it could also be caused by infections and stress. Although they usually go away on their own, medical assistance would be needed if the case is a serious one.
Melanoma
This is a severe and potentially lifethreatening skin cancer. Press the panic button if you see one of the following signs on the mole: the shape of one half does not
match the other half; the edges are ragged or irregular; colour is uneven with shades of black and brown; and there is an increase in size. Treatment would include surgery, chemotherapy, biological therapy, radiation therapy or a combination.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis causes scaling and swelling. These patches can itch or feel sore and are often found on the elbows, knees, parts of legs, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of the feet; they can show up on other areas as well. However, it is hard to diagnose as it can look like other skin diseases and the doctor might need to test a skin sample. Treatment depends on how serious the disease is, the size of the patches, the type and how the patient reacts to medicines.
Vitiligo
There is loss of pigment in the skin with vitiligo. Loss of colour could be in patches or in segments. It is not life threatening, but could be life altering, as it can lead to low self-esteem among some.
Warts
Warts are skin growths that are caused by the human papillomavirus

Wrinkles cannot be classified as a skin problem as it is universal sign of ageing. Skin changes with age and bring with it wrinkles, age spots, and dryness. While sunlight is a major cause of skin ageing, cigarette smoking also has a big say in causing wrinkles.

Difference in sensory processing in Dyslexics Typically, the brain adapts rapidly to sensory input, such as the sound of a person’s voice or images of faces and objects, to make processing more efficient. Neuroscientists have now discovered that a basic mechanism underlying sensory perception is deficient in individuals with dyslexia. They found that adaptation was, on average, about half that of those without the disorder. This difference may explain some of the challenges people with dyslexia experience, such as discerning speech in a noisy environment and learning to read.
Phubbing…? A study, which explored the detrimental effects of smartphones on relationships, has resulted in the coining of a new term, ‘phubbing’, which is described as a fusion of ‘phone’ and ‘snubbing’. Phubbing is seen as a source of conflict – how often a partner in a relationship gets distracted by his or her smartphone acts as an indicator. The study, which was done through a survey method, found that smartphones are real relationship breakers. It revealed that using a smartphone in the presence of a romantic partner undermined the quality of the relationship.
Tolerance to pain could be a ‘silent’ risk People who are less sensitive to pain may be at an increased risk of having a ‘silent’ heart attack, states a study, which looked at unusual symptoms, including upper back or jaw pain, shortness of breath and nausea. Researchers found that people who had a silent heart attack in the past generally had a higher pain tolerance than people who had sought treatment for heart attack symptoms. This connection appeared to be stronger in women than men. In contrast, they found that people who had a silent attack had, on average, greater pain tolerance.

Running is good for the knees Good news for runners. There is no danger to the knees as a result of all that regular running. According to a study, running appears to reduce inflammation in the knee joint and not increase it, as was commonly believed. Running, say researchers, may actually protect knees down the road, and safeguard against degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis. They found that levels of both proteins went down after 30 minutes of running, suggesting a decrease in overall inflammation in the joint. To rule out other factors that may have contributed to the drop, the researchers also performed a ‘control’ test, taking fluid samples before and after a 30-minute seated rest.
A study has found that eating foods rich in lutein (for example: leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables) will help promote a healthy ageing brain. Lutein is a plant pigment humans consume through diet. According to previous studies, foods found to have the highest levels of lutein include corn, egg yolk, kiwi, pumpkin, zucchini squash and spinach. Although the new study did not specify the amount of lutein that is needed for ultimate brain protection, it did conclude that more levels of the vitamin meant a better chance at brain health preservation.

Chemotherapy less effective if depressed
Patients dealing with depression while fighting a cancer diagnosis may be less receptive to chemotherapy treatments, suggests a new research. It found that these patients are less responsive to cancer drugs and also struggle more with the side effects of treatment. Researchers believe these findings will help shed light on mental health woes faced by cancer patients so as make their drug therapy more potent. They found that patients who saw their cancer spread to other organs in the body were the most depressed of the group.
Asthma symptoms could worsen with processed meat diet
Eating four or more portions of processed meats a week may worsen symptoms like wheezing, says a study. However, this does not amount to an asthma attack, it adds, pointing out that an asthma attack is a debilitating and sudden loss of normal lung function that may require emergency treatment. According to the researchers, compounds called nitrites, which are used to preserve meat, might be the culprits, as they have been linked to inflammation in the airways. Some of the effect may also be influenced by obesity.
Painkillers cause hearing loss?
Long-term use of painkillers has been linked to hearing loss in women. A study found that women who take paracetamol or ibuprofen just twice a week could be damaging their hearing permanently. These drugs are thought to damage the ear by removing protection from the inner ear, reducing blood supply, and damaging the tiny hairs that register sound. The link between paracetamol and hearing loss was only found when women had taken the painkiller for six years or more. This is why painkillers are not sold over-thecounter and people are advised to take only when recommended by their doctor at no more than the recommended dose.

Explore Oman on a cycle and experience Oman’s natural splendour from close quarters

ith its imposing mountains and fascinating wadis, Oman is a paradise of sorts for those seeking adventure sports. One could venture out in any part of the country and find a trail that quells, rather builds up the adventure thirst. While the summers are, generally, harsh, with temperatures rising as high as 50 degrees, it is the anxiously awaited winter that helps appease the adventure spirit. The pleasant notes of this season make biking a must do activity. According to ‘Bike and Hike Oman’, adventure and biking lovers from all over Europe and America flock to Oman for an unforgettable outdoors experience during this season. “The cool breeze of the Omani mountains and lower temperature in the winters reduce the chances of unexpected tire bursts and enhance the overall biking experience which is much safer and relaxed than the summers,” says Akbar Abbas, Manager of Bike and Hike Oman, which organises exclusive, fully supported bike tours across Oman.
Bike and Hike Oman is stationed in Al Hamra, a small oasis in the Hajar Mountains. For those who have fitness listed under New Year resolutions, biking is the perfect outdoor activity to initiate, as it requires no formal training and is a low impact sport. And with winter perfectly complementing the backdrop of mountains and wadis, biking could be your best bet to experience Oman in an all new setting.
Following are some tips and suggestions from Akbar Abbas for biking enthusiasts:
Best places to indulge in biking
Beyond Nizwa, in the Western Hajar Mountains, are the trails that are filled with options for an adrenaline rush and some strenuous climbs that challenge your endurance. The Jabal Shams Mountain is starting to gain its presence on the bucket list of every cycling enthusiast around the world. The Jabal Shams Plateau also has enough biking trails for a beginner cycling enthusiast to experience some off-road cycling with easy bumps and moderate corners. The Trans Hajar biking trail is an ancient route that connects Wadi Ghul to the Sait Village in the south. It attracts thousands of hard-core cycling enthusiasts

that attempt this segment and later compete with their best timings on International Cycling forums, like Strava. Biking enthusiasts who are seeking a lighter yet fun filled biking experience, often venture into the secret hidden treasures of the Wadi Al Ala. This wadi is secretly accessible through an unknown bike trail, also known as the missing link. Enthusiasts looking for leisure biking fun with families, especially with their young ones, could do short rides through many of the small oasis towns in Oman like Al Hamra. The green landscape and undulating traffic-free streets will enhance the pleasure of biking and also help you learn more about the traditional Oasis culture of Oman. Bike and Hike Oman has flagship tours that serve as the best option for such leisure activities through the Aflaj System in Al Hamra and through the Old capital Nizwa where you ride through the ruins of the old town
Dos and don’ts: Bike and Hike Oman strongly recommends selecting the right bikes, as some of the bicycles available in the supermarkets may be cheaper, but could do a much heavier damage on both your wallet and health later. Opt for high-end mountain bikes with advanced quality disk brakes and professional quality gear system. These are regularly serviced, as the dust from the trails could damage the bikes as well as hinder your biking experience. Other basic safety measures such as wearing of helmets are highly recommended. One should always double check the performance of their brakes before starting to ride. Your ride in the trails should be well planned with a complete knowledge of the kind of terrain, distance and changing altitudes. You could hire a biking guide to help you plan your next adventure. If you are riding at night, you must be clearly visible to the oncoming traffic. There are professional quality bicycle lights available in the market specifically designed for riding in the night.

Travel Trends Just TRAVEL
Travel industry is set to experience a boom in 2017 say trend watchers
Good news for boomers. According to an online survey, a whopping 99 per cent of boomers (who would be aged 50+ in 2017) will take at least one leisure trip in the New Year, with an average of five or more trips during the year. 51 percent are expected to only travel domestically, with a significant number of travellers exploring both domestic and international destinations. But Boomers are not the only ones with holiday on their minds; Millennial, Gen X, Y and Z are all expected to take at least one holiday in 2017. Taking a break is, apparently, becoming a norm than an exception; and age has no say in this. According to travel experts, this trend points to the growing awareness of the importance of rest and relaxation for everyone.
Check out some of the travel trends expected to propel the industry in 2017: Enriched travel
While expatriates in this part of the world may find themselves travelling home to visit family or choosing destinations with the purpose of visiting family and friends, that will not be the only motive for travel as the trend shows a move to enriching travel experiences. What this means is that people will be travelling to learn more about the local culture and experience the way of life in the destination of their choice than to simply enjoy the nightlife or shopping. The experience sought could range from adventure to wellness retreats.
Solo travel
Solo traveling is not a new concept, but it is set to become a big trend in 2017, with several travel agencies catering to travellers who have found joy in traveling alone. Many believe that solo travellers enjoy more meaningful holidays and travellers themselves say that it boosts their self-esteem. Interestingly, more women are now opting for solo adventures and vacations that have women-only theme.

Domestic travel
There is nothing new about domestic travel, more so in this part of the world where weekends translate into trips to the mountains or the dessert. However, 2017 is expected to give local travel a big boost as people are seeking avenues that are aimed at boosting travel within ones means, which translates as trips within the country.
Personalised travel
While frequent travellers are becoming their own travel agent, relying on social media and other online services to chalk out their itinerary, personalised travel is expected to be a major trend in 2017. Travellers are seeking options that are based on their everchanging needs. For those relying on their own resources, the newly launched Google Trips travel app, which combines travel planning with custom itineraries and guides, is said to act as a personalised travel agent.
Digital detox
This trend is bound to benefit holidaymakers who cannot resist the urge to check their emails and keep their work line connected at all times. Majority of the executives have said they feel obliged to check their emails during vacations abroad. But things are set to change
say industry observers, as travellers are committing to stay true to their holiday and unplug completely from their work life.
Bleisure Travel
For the uninitiated, ‘bleisure’ travel is the official term for business and leisure travel, which is all about combining business obligations with your personal choices. This trend is expected to grow in the New Year, as many employers now offer special ‘business trips’ or even incentive trips, which offer increasingly enjoyable options.
Lesser-known destinations
Travellers, say industry experts, are looking for off-the-beaten track experiences. On the list of emerging destinations of note are Cuba, Iceland, Croatia, South Africa and Japan. With the United Nations General Assembly marking 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development, travellers are expected to be more inclined to invest in experiences that not only broaden their horizons but also make a difference to people, nature and wildlife of the places they visit.
Virtual travel
This is the new face of travel industry. Virtual and augmented reality will become important sales tools as travel industry is mainly about selling experiences. This will allow travellers to sample the fare – from choosing their seats in the flight and checking out the hotel room to taking a walk in the neighbourhood – before making the final booking.

2017 Beauty Diary Check out what is trending in the world of beauty and make up in 2017 If 2016 was all about innovations and colours in the beauty domain, 2017 promises to focus on back-to-basics essentials, which is all about skincare and more care. An all-natural beauty routine is set to rock the makeup scene.
Skin is in
Going by the runway trends, experts note that skin is, indeed, in, whether the makeup is natural or dramatic. ‘Take good care of your skin’: that is the advice for all makeup enthusiasts. With barely-there makeup trending in the New Year, the stress is on ensuring that the skin looks and appears healthy and radiant – one that will be effective even for a no-makeup look. The new pared down look will give makeup addicts a reason to go shopping for products that promise to impart a natural look. For example, a lightweight foundation would help in evening the skin tone and letting the skin shine through. Gentle polishing of skin is also essential to help eliminate dull and dead skin cells.
Microblading
2017 will continue to cherish the brow trend of 2016, which saw microblading becoming a hit with women looking for ways to update their brows. It is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps or fill in over plucked rows; the result will last for up to three years.

ot everyone can carry a bow tie with panache; it can seem intimidating and make you feel self-conscious, especially if you are a necktie person. but some formal occasions, like weddings, make it obligatory to wear one. Gear up for the occasion by selecting a bow tie that is perfect for it: traditional ones for formal events and stylish for a lively occasion.
bold and dark lips, which project brooding and mysterious looks, are in. deep lip colours look perfect on plump and healthy lips, for which you need to give your lips the care it deserves. Find a lip treatment that nourishes the soft skin and also gives it an appearance of volume.
eye makeup
From smoky eye and artsy liner to pops of bright colour, eyes are poised to adapt to every kind of makeup. Also in the running is the once popular ‘cut crease’ eye makeup, which is a technique that is used to define the crease by cutting across it with a contrasting eye shadow colour and little or no blending.
Pretty ears
here is a trend that will get your ears perked up, literally. ear makeup is set to become a rage, as demonstrated by models on the runway. Simply dust the ends with holographic glitter to make them look pretty.
Although there are clip on ties that take away the pressure of learning to tie one, go for the self-tied or a pre-tied one and get into the mood of the occasion. use the tie as an accessory for your favourite suit and you will not go wrong in selecting the colour and style. but do not be overly cautious with the colour of the tie, as your objective should be to match it with your suit and shirt. There is no harm in getting a tie in a contrast colour if you are willing to experiment with your look. If its office work or business meet that requires you to sport a bow tie, it is best to keep it toned down and pick one that is in a more subtle shade of navy or grey. Go ahead, enjoy your new look and bask in the appreciative glances thrown at you. For there is little doubt that a man who wears a bow tie has an air of sophistication about him.

And if the cut is tight and straight, the appeal is more sensual.
Sheer look
Sheer fabric does seem bold and scandalous if it’s revealing, but if the item is designed creatively with floral embroidery and even beads acting as a cover, you could rock the style with grace. Designers have used it as lace trim, puffy sleeves and pleated skirt to give it an acceptable flavour.

With many food joints throwing the spotlight on vegetarian food, dishes like fried bread and vegan chocolate chip cookies are becoming popular.

According to psychologists, holding a bowl and eating is said to induce mindfulness, helping diners to savour all the flavours and textures with every bite. G
ift giving, rather gift selecting, is an art that not many have mastered. It is, apparently, a complicated chore, one that requires an understanding of the recipient’s personality, amongst a host of other parameters. But could the complexities involved in selecting gifts have spawned the idea that it is not the gift but the thought behind it that counts? Perhaps not, as the suggestion that one needs to be thoughtful has found global acceptance. Gift giving is seen as an act of strengthening relationships, of making someone feel special; it resonates all over the world and cuts across cultures and borders.
56
December 2016
A thoughtful giver is one who has taken enough time to carefully consider the recipient’s personal interests, needs, wants, likes and dislikes when selecting the gift. It could be a card that simply says ‘you are in my thoughts’ or it could be a piece of expensive jewellery that the recipient was hankering for. The thoughtful feature is easy to adopt when one is picking gifts for friends and family; but to realise the true essence of the phrase, it is important to ensure that it is thoughtfulness that has been the guide behind every gift purchased. With a little perceptiveness and some creativity, you could get there…
Relatively SPEAKING
Although there are no definite guidelines to pick the perfect gift, here are a few tips that could demonstrate your thoughtfulness while picking one.
Pay attention
Do not fall prey to the so-called ‘safe’ gifts, which signal your indifference and come across as an act of obligation. Also, do not buy something because YOU like it. The first rule of gift buying is observing. That means paying attention to what people who matter to you are saying and doing. Be perceptive to the hints they throw and work it around depending on your budget and your resources. Knowing their hobbies and interests could also act as a guide when going gift buying.
Understand the personality
When you have no clues to rely on, go by the recipient’s personality. Try and find a gift that matches their personality; it could be an item of fitness, a fashion accessory or simply a book that you think the recipient would love. If you are unsure, make a list of things that the recipient is interested in or get back in time to see if there is something you can replace in the receiver’s life.
Follow the occasion
Some occasions only require gifts that wish luck or are aimed at spreading good luck. It could be one of those ‘safe’ gifts, but not one that could be misinterpreted as a sign of obligation. Be creative and find ways to link the occasion with the needs or the recipient.
Find a cause
Picking a gift for a friend or a relative who has everything or has fewer or no desires can seem like an impossible task. But if he/she accepts that it is the thought that counts, find ways to choose a gift that supports a cause, either in his/her locality or globally. You could even make a donation to a charity in his/her name.
Do it yourself
Although spending money on a gift automatically increases the worth of the item for the recipient, making a gift yourself could have its own impact, especially if it is a close friend or a family member. The time, effort and the creativity you put into making the gift is demonstrative of your feelings for the person. If you are not a do-it-yourself person, you could write a letter, bake or cook food or even present a photo album with photographs that trace memories of the recipient.
Make time
The simplest gift you could give someone you love is your time. It could be time spent in helping a friend arrange a new home; taking an old friend out for a movie; paying a home visit to a senior with food and drinks; a foot massage; fixing a garden or attic… When you gift your expertise, it shouts out your care for the other person. As Mother Theresa said, ‘It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.’
Gift experience
If money is not an issue, you could pick an adventure trip or even a spa session, depending on the likes of the recipient. And if nothing helps, pick a shopping voucher from his/her favourite shopping mall.

Alpha Male Who is an Alpha Male? Is he that man who tends to assume a dominant role in social/professional situations?
I
n the fascinating animal kingdom, the alpha male is the top-ranking animal in a social group, who is, most often, decided by play-fights or aggressive battles.
While the alpha male in the human world is not called on to vie for the title in a fistfight or mental sparring, the sense of power associated with that tag is apparent in simple gestures and overall body language. Take a look at high networth individuals‌the vibes are all there. Whether it is the overall personality, the clothes, or simply the attitude on display, an alpha male, apparently, knows just how to portray himself to the world and get his way around things without being domineering or judgmental in his dealings. According to an online analysis of alpha male, it is the level of confidence demonstrated that determines if one can toe the alpha line. Alpha males not only believe in themselves, they allow their thoughts and actions reflect that belief. And yes, they are competitive. They do not give up in the face of failure; in fact, for them everything they do in life is a competition. It is what drives them in life. But don’t get it wrong, they are not in a bid to show off their competitive nature. Although height might seem to be a deciding factor in classifying one as an alpha male, the stress is more on ones presence; it is the larger than life figure that one learns to project, which underscores the alpha personality. Presence may come forth through the body language, ones communication skills and also how one carries himself.
58
December 2016
It is the poise and the gait, which demonstrates confidence, competition and the presence. The walk may or may not have a swagger, but there is an element of control in every step taken; it is slow but determined and strong. An alpha male knows just where to position himself, while sitting or standing; he knows how to take control of a situation and is, often, seen as a dominant member of a group. He is also a risk-taker, a go-getter and an easy speaker. He knows just what he is talking and what impact it will have and is not afraid to maintain eye contact while talking. It is not simply about looking other people in the eyes; it is about knowing the right amount of eye contact to use and how to use it. It also stretches to physical contact - alphas know their limits when it comes to physical contact but are not afraid to express themselves.

Body Language
Do’s and don’ts to develop the alpha male persona: l
Don’t let worry creep into your life; replace negative worrisome thoughts with encouraging ones.
l
Follow the non-reactive path in the face of problems or confrontations. Make ‘move on’ your lifestyle mantra.
l
Learn to relax and follow effective breathing practices.
l
Identify positive gestures to induce relaxation – avoid wrinkling your forehead or fidgeting with your hands.
l
Tone down your movements, incorporate an unhurried pace that is suggestive of your control over time and space. Fluid movements signal confidence.
l
Don’t tax your eyes… Pay attention to things only if you are interested in it.
l
Be calm and rational – that’s the trick to reach your alpha state. Getting emotional can be seen as a sign of weakness.
l
Do what makes you happy; do not seek approval from others.
l
Understand fashion and address it positively; how you dress and present yourself has a big say on your alpha status.
l
Fitness. You can never overestimate the importance of your physical fitness in your overall personality.
l
Do not try to fit in. Being different could be just what helps you in your bid to stand out. Simply do what you want to…
l
Do not be afraid to say ‘No’.
l
Do not be in a hurry to please people. Remember, you can never make everyone happy; naysayers are everywhere. l Develop a sense of humour and have the confidence to laugh at yourself. The ability to laugh at yourself will also help you remain humble in your dealings. l Be a man of values. Make hard work your life’s dictum. l Do not give up. Ever. You are bound to succeed

Red light-reading vehicles
Wireless Jump Rope
It has been proven that a driver who knows when a red light will turn green is more relaxed and aware. Taking this theory a step forward, Audi unveiled a novel technology in Las Vegas recently, which enables vehicles to ‘read’ traffic signals ahead and tell the motorist how long the wait will be. It features a dashboard traffic signal icon and a timer next to the digital vehicle speed and area speed limit displays already common in newer cars. The technology, called ‘traffic light information’, uses 4G LTE cellular communication between the vehicle and a centralised traffic management control network.
Looking to begin a workout regimen at home but restrained by space? This Wireless Jump Rope is the answer to your prayer. It will let you work up a sweat and will help you get in more cardio without destroying your home. It consists of two jump rope handles with a small bit of rope and a ball attached to each end. All that you need to do is spin the balls in a circular motion and jump in time. The Jump Rope will keep track of how many jumps you have performed and the number of calories burned. What is more, ten minutes of jumping rope is the same as running for thirty.
Gaming console to play retro games
Seasoned gamers seeking to savour classic games need only look towards RetroEngine Sigma, which is designed to emulate over 28 different classic gaming machines. The tiny console, which includes two USB ports for attaching controllers or Bluetooth adapters, doesn’t have a keyboard of its own - users connect to it over Wi-Fi using an app on a smartphone or tablet and choose what software to install. Gamers can even turn it into a 4K-capable media centre.
Bites A police officer jumped into his squad car and called the station. “I have an interesting case here,” he quipped. “A woman shot her husband for stepping on the floor she just mopped.”
“Have you arrested her?” asked the sergeant. “No, not yet. The floor’s still wet!” Anne’s cooking has always been the target of her family jokes. One evening, as she prepared dinner a bit too quickly, the kitchen filled with smoke and the smoke detector went off. Although
both of her children had received fire-safety training at school, they did not respond to the alarm. Annoyed, Anne stormed through the house in search of them and found them in the bathroom, washing their hands. Over the loud buzzing of the smoke alarm, she asked them to identify the sound. “It’s the smoke detector,” they replied in unison. “Do you know what that sound means?” she demanded. “Sure,” the elder one replied, “Dinner’s ready.”

Nostradamus predictions for 2017
There are some terrifying warnings in store for 2017 from 16th century philosopher Nostradamus. His followers believe that many of his prophecies, including 9/11, the rise of Hitler and Donald Trump’s presidential victory have come true. They are now looking up his writings to see what the new year will bring. Some of the prophecies they expect to come true include, China making moves to cure ‘economic imbalance’ in the world, Italy facing financial hardship with rising unemployment and loans and the US becoming increasingly ungovernable…
150 Christmas lights ‘squirreled’
A squirrel in Seattle is wanted for stealing 150 Christmas lights! This fluffy-tailed squirrel began snatching the lights from his neighbour, who caught it on her video camera when she realised that her Christmas tree was missing many a bulb. She posted the video of the ‘bulb bandit’ on YouTube, stating that the squirrel had stolen 150 bulbs within 24 hours. The squirrel, it appears, thought the bulbs were acorns or fruits for consumption during the long winter.
Incredible as it may sound, the first New Year’s celebration was held 4,000 years ago after Julius Caesar declared January as a national holiday. l Eat more leafy vegetables (and also legumes) on New Year’s for prosperity – that is what tradition says. l Local Spaniards eat 12 grapes in the 12 seconds right before midnight for good luck; in Chile, they eat lentils. l In Ireland they hit loaves of bread against the walls of their homes on New Year’s day to scare away any bad spirits. l In Germany they pour hot metal into bowls of cold water to find out what shape it takes; the shape is believed to be indicative of the kind of year they are going to have. l The Ball that drops in New York City’s Times Square each year, has dropped every year since 1907, except in 1942 and 1943, during World War II. l In Lebanon, Pennsylvania, residents drop bologna at midnight; in Mount Olive, North Carolina, they drop a pickle; and in Folly Beach, South Carolina, they drop a pair of flip-flops. l
Towers on Mars?
Martians have some building skills, it appears, after UFO conspiracy websites posted images showing three milehigh buildings, in a row, on the planet. According to alien chasers, this is evidence that intelligent life once existed on Mars. Believed to be eroded rock formations, it was first highlighted by YouTube channel Mundodesconocido in a video. In a promotional trailer of the video about the discovery, the channel said it thought they could have been built by intelligent aliens. ‘There are a whole planet full of buildings and artefacts to be discovered on Mars’, UFO blogger Scott C Waring posted on website ufosightingsdaily.com.
