OAMC introduces new baggage policy In line with the highest standards and global operating procedures in the aviation industry, Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC), is introducing a new baggage policy across its major airports, including Muscat International, Salalah and Sohar. Effective from September 1st, passengers will no longer be allowed to check in round and irregular shaped luggage such as items wrapped in blankets, linen or tied with rope. This change is applicable to all passengers regardless of airline, cabin class or destination. For travellers, the new policy will result in faster pickups, less baggage jams, and an overall smoother and hassle-free experience. For airport personnel, it will ensure the safety and security of baggage handlers, efficient check-ins and seamless access to checked baggage in case of further security screening. The Company is currently working closely with all airlines, travel agencies, and tourism promoting websites, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to ensure that this policy is clearly communicated to all travellers to and from Oman.

s fans of singer and songwriter Chester Charles Bennington grappled with the news of his suicide at his home in late July, the world mourned the death of a talented musician, who had, in a brief span of time, demonstrated his vast acumen to create perceptual changes in the music horizon. Tributes kept pouring in from celebrities across the globe, as fans gathered in Los Angeles’ Grand Park to sing, collectively, classics from Linkin Park, in memory of Linkin Park’s late singer. 41-year old Chester Bennington had created a revolution of sorts with his singing style and his unpretentious approach as a performer. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, to Susan Elaine, a nurse, and Lee Russell Bennington, a police detective, he found his interest leaning towards music, early on. But childhood didn’t turn out to be blissful, following his parents’ divorce, sexual abuse from an older male friend and the subsequent drug addiction.

Music proved to be a redeeming factory, though. While studying at Greenway High School he started his first band ‘Grey Daze’, a post-grunge band, which recorded three albums – ‘Demo’, ‘Wake/Me’ and ‘...no sun today’. He left the band in 1998, but struggled to find another one to pursue his talent. But there was lots of music left in him to let go of what he loved most. Following fame in later years, he is quoted to have said, “I have been able to tap into all the negative things that can happen to me throughout my life by numbing myself to the pain so to speak and kind of being able to vent it through my music.” Bennington first gained prominence as a vocalist following the release of Linkin Park’s debut album, ‘Hybrid Theory’, which was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry

Association of America in 2005. It was the best-selling debut album of the decade, as well as one of the few albums ever to hit that many sales. The band consolidated on its successes from then on, enjoying fame with every album – from ‘Meteora’ in early 2000s to the recent ‘One More Light’. Following the news of Bennington’s death, the band cancelled the North American leg of their ‘One More Light Tour’, demonstrating the void that his death had left in the group and the music horizon of the world. Alongside Linkin Park, Bennington had also formed his own band ‘Dead by Sunrise’ in 2005 and worked with ‘Stone Temple Pilots’ in 2013. He is widely regarded by music lovers as one of the top rock vocalists of the 2000s. The ‘Hit Parader’ magazine placed him at No. 46 on their list of ‘100 Metal Vocalists of All Time’. Although Bennington had addiction issues from early on, he had, on a couple of occasions, stated that he had gone clean. Apparently, it had come to hound him in his final moments of life. ‘Straight Outta Compton’ actor charged

One of the actors of ‘Straight Outta Compton’ seems to have taken his role too seriously. R. Marcos Taylor, who played Suge Knight, has been charged with multiple counts of assault. He reportedly got into an argument with the manager of Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Green Brook, New Jersey, and punched him in the face several times. He was, allegedly, dragged out of the restaurant by the employees, where he then punched a woman on the side of the head.

K-Pop Group, BTS are officially returning with a new album this September. The 7-member Group, which recently beat out Justin Bieber for the Top Social Artist award at the ‘2017 Billboard Music Awards’, will release their new album on September 18th, called ‘Love Yourself ‘Her.’ The album will come in four packaging versions, and include a hidden track written and produced by group leader, Rap Monster.

The former Spice Girl, who is in the middle of a nasty divorce from her second husband, was, apparently, upset after he made her the butt of one of his jokes. man may have its reservations when it comes to adopting style and fashion launched on global runways by international designers, but it has not shied away from staking a claim in the fashion arena, albeit on a tradition platform, with many talented Omanis joining the fashion designing fold to craft accessories and clothes that cater to fashionistas in the country. While new designers prefer to rely on Instagram to reach out to potential customers, several have found strong foothold in the vibrant world of fashion through their boutiques. In the following pages, we present the stories of four designers who have coloured Oman’s fashion canvas with their craftsmanship.

Deema Oman

From financial operations to jewellery designing and conceptualising fashion for homes and offices, Shadya Al-Ismaily, the brain behind Deema Oman, has proven her versatility in the complex world of style and fashion

he year was 2011 when Shadya Al-Ismaily, a committed career woman, decided to put the brakes on her full time occupation in the field of finance and investment and devote all her time to Deema, which had been registered in 2008 as the first ever national designing house for luxury jewellery to be born in Oman. Pan to 2017, not only has her dream turned into a successful brand; she has let her passion soar in the world of style and fashion by branching out into other related areas of designing. Her inception into the world of jewellery designing was spurred by her observations that most Omani traditional jewellery pieces weren’t practical for office wear or everyday wear. She’d noted early on that the use of Omani jewellery was

Deema Oman has been gaining recognition for its revolutionary impact on the Omani jewellery designing approaches, and has been celebrating the brand’s successes through its presence at prestigious events like Jewellery Arabia (2010), International Jewellery London Exhibition (2011), the celebration of 150 years anniversary of life and legacy of Sir Henry Royce (2012), Knooz for Fine Jewellery and Watch Exhibition (2012) and the celebration of 110 years anniversary of Rolls Royce (2013), among others. becoming more and more restricted to important social events and festivals. It was this that compelled her to find ways to encourage modern Omani women to readopt traditional jewellery. It soon led to the creation of Deema collections, whose sole objective was the incorporation of traditional Omani jewellery and the latest trends in the exalted international jewellery markets. Having a natural leaning to all things art and design since school days, Shadya found it easy to relate to her designing venture. Despite her ensuing higher education in finance, her passion for art remained unabated. She dabbled in painting and other home designing projects, before heeding the suggestions of friends and family to jump into the designing field. She started designing jewellery as a hobby in 2008 and strengthened her aptitude with formal professional jewellery designing courses from Birmingham School of Jewellery. Eventually, she became a professional designer and has since won the ‘Women Super Achievers Award’ from Femina Mumbai, India (in 2017), been featured in a luxury book issued to mark 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth (2016), got selected as one of Oman’s most powerful business women by a local publishing house (2015), offered the role of ‘Ambassador of Innovation’ by Dr. Zahra Al Rawahi of The Research Council (2014), awarded ‘Women Award of Excellency’ (2013), and was one of the ‘Super Achievers of the Sultanate’ by a publishing house (2012). Sadz Collection Sara Al Zadjali of Sadz Design fame talks about making style statements with bags and defines her fashionista moments through Muscat Street Styles, her popular fashion page on Instagram

ara Al-Zadjali, owner of Sadz Design and founder of @muscatstreetstyles, is a fashion maker, having turned her passion for bags into a business and her love for all things style into an art forum through social media. Despite a full time job as a senior manager in risk management at a local bank, she has found avenues to create designer bags and keep the fashion momentum up with her pet project, Muscat Street Styles, an Instagram page presenting styles adopted by fashionistas in the country, region, as well as global style inspirations from celebrities. Talking about her fashion sense, she says she acquired a penchant for style from her mother who has always dressed up, whether it was to go for a social do or her work. “Most of my clothes as a growing up girl were bought by her,” she recalls, hastening to add that she always – even as a kid – had her eyes on shoes and bags. She soon became a bag collector and all her travels out of the country ended in shopping for bags. “That was until 2008…” she muses, explaining that that was the year she got her hands on a Gucci bag, a gift from her brother, which ignited her obsession for high end brands.

It was when her friends prodded her to turn those sketches into bags that she brushed the inertia away and turned her dream into a reality. To makes things easier, she had an aunt living in Italy, who provided her with the right platform to channelize her creativity and explore the avenues to set her designing business in motion. She soon found herself in Italy where she checked around specifically for a small family run factory, dealing in handmade bags. And so, in May 2014 she launched her first handbag collection and also started the now popular Instagram page @muscatstreetstyles. Called the Abeey Collection, after her favourite cousin, it featured one style of bag in two sizes – mini and classic. The bags, designed in exotic leather, python and water snake, were mostly for night wear; the mini bag was created in a size that catered to Sara’s personal requirement. The collection was sold online using her Sadz Design Instagram page. That same year, she also participated in the Dubai Fashion Forward exhibition.

A year or so later, she went to London to complete her higher education, where she explored the vibrant fashion horizon and found her inclination for bag designing growing. Although she’d dabbled in bag designing on note books since high school years, a dedicated sketch during a lazy weekend in London, changed things for her. It was an idea put forth by her father... “At that time I was obsessed with high end brand bags and he was like why don’t you create your own brand instead of spending that much of money,” she quips. But the idea didn’t take off immediately. The sketch got forgotten in between her notes and she returned back home after completing her Masters programme.

To follow up on her debut collection, she introduced casual bags called Sadz Collection in 2015, featuring two styles – shoppers’ bag and Bella bags. That year she also ventured into wallets for men and complemented it with wallets for women. During this time she partook in local exhibitions and followed that up with exhibitions in Kuwait and London. In 2016 she designed the Abeey clutch with a detachable strap and added card holders in crocodile and python skin. Although she has had her share of trials on the way, Sara has ensured that all her designs are unique and the quality is maintained by creating all the pieces exclusively in the designated factory in Italy, where she personally supervises the process – from choosing the leather and the colours to all the little details.

She relies on social media to market her collection, but she admits that there are challenges, as most buyers of high end products prefer to patronise only internationally recognised brands. She has realised that the market can be slow, but her dreams have not waned. “I would love to see my brand next to all those high

hat started as an experiment for designing duo Rawan Said Al Mashrafi and Reem Al Mashrafi has turned into a full-fledged fashion affair, with a relentless pursuit to create and present stunning outfits for women who want to stand apart. While the experiment turned up challenges from different quarters, it was the fun factor that kept them going. In fact, looking back on their fashion foray, Rawan comments that it has been all for the good. “The challenges made us want to become better,” she observes.

For the designer sisters, the spur to get into the world of fashion designing came from their family. “It all started with the support of our family,” they note, pointing out that they began their journey by designing and tailoring clothes for themselves. “We always got compliments for our clothes… That encouraged us to move ahead with the idea of entering the fashion world,” they state. The sisters have always been passionate about fashion and design and, in fact, aspired to have a business of their own, in addition to their day jobs. “We wanted to do something that we enjoyed so that it wouldn’t feel like a burden… And fashion was where we arrived at; it was the one thing we shared and loved and it worked out just right,” they add.

Nevertheless, they had their apprehensions and they admit that it sounded quite unrealistic initially. “We started buying readymade clothes from abroad and reselling them locally. Then we took it one step forward by creating newer versions of the clothes we bought, by altering the colours or the design and somehow adding our touch to it. Slowly, we learned how to design a whole piece and add it to our collection,” recounts Rawan. Soon, their first collection was all set for buyers and, to their amazement, the entire collection got sold within a matter of days. “All the pieces were sold even before we could do a photo shoot…this gave us the confidence to continue,” she adds. The positive reviews have continued since and have helped bolster their move to grow further in their business. As they maintain: “The feedback we got after the release of every collection pushes us to do more and move forward…” Both sisters are self-taught in the field of designing; however, Reem has more experience when it comes to fabrics, designs and trends, points out Rawan. “Working together, I have learnt so much from her…” she notes. On their designing agenda are expansion plans, which also include adding abayas and, some day, even ready-to-wear clothes, to their line of collection. With cultural influences resplendent in their designs, they have a wide canvas to explore. They have been inspired, in no small way, by Oman’s rich heritage, culture and tradition. Talking about the influences derived from Oman’s culture and heritage,

they state that it gave them a wide range of options in choosing their designs. “We try to incorporate them into our designs; we strive to build a name that serves all Omanis,” they maintain, adding that they also stay in tandem with new trends even while respecting the cultural boundaries and taste. But they agree that Omani fashion has evolved over time to keep up with new trends. “It is now neater and less colourful than the traditional clothes used to be. For instance, the jalabiya has become more like a dress, even while maintaining some of the older concepts. This had made it more likeable for people, as it now suits many tastes,” they state. Their collection, at present, is displayed to their buyers via social media, alongside exhibitions and occasional presentations in boutiques. Explaining about their methodology, they state, “We try to be accessible by taking part in exhibitions and providing private viewing. We also exhibit part of our collections at special occasions at some multi brand boutiques. But we mainly we do photo-shoots of our collection, so that we can share pictures of our designs on social media.”

n early initiation into the big, bold, colourful world of fashion has set Noof Al-Zadjali on the right track. Although she describes her initiation into the world of fashion as a soft start, as it was restricted to designing her personal outfits for special occasions, it was, perhaps, the perfect entry for someone who has nurtured fashion all her life. “From the very early stage, fashion design has always been the perfect getaway to follow and study and practice during my free time,” she maintains, pointing out that her passion for designing grew along with the support from family and friends, who also sought her advice and assistance in different aspects of their outfits.

N-11 proved to be the perfect platform to create a balanced fusion between traditional Eastern fashion and modern fashion trends, while channelizing her fashion interests in the right direction. Today, her latest designs and collections are released on regular basis, along with size guides, on the Instagram page, with the potential of setting-up a fashion boutique in future to provide a more interactive experience for buyers. She attributes the success of N-11 to her personal expertise and observations. She states: “The progress accomplished today through the successive collections of N-11 has been a result of both personal experiences and encounters in fashion design, as well as following and appraising top fashion designers and the latest international fashion.” She has been strongly influenced by Omani culture and heritage, which, she says, will always be at the core of her fashion designs and collections. “It is simulated by the belief that a girl’s outfit has to be respectful and sincere to her society and religion; however, not forbidding the right to glow and shine with the latest fashion trends and designs,” she states.

Personally, she is inspired by the traditional Omani national dress code for women which is centered on simplicity through a dress worn over trousers (sirwal) and a headdress (lihaf) infused with the latest fashion trends and top designs. As a designer, she follows the following fashion beliefs:

Statement “Fashion is a strong statement and can have a great deal of impact on a woman’s self confidence,” maintains fashionista Yonelle Coetzee, one of the founders and creators of the luxury children’s boutique ‘Amira La Petite Couture’

ike most things in life, even fashionistas, it appears, are born, not made. Yonelle Coetzee certainly exemplifies it. In her words: “I have always been into fashion…fashion is in my genes.”

She was inspired, early on, by her great grandmother who was a fashion designer in South Africa, and a stylish one at that. “Even in her old days she always dressed to a nine. I used to go through her photos when I was young and dream of wearing the same high heels, perfect makeup and hair - and oh those dresses!” she recalls, pointing out that she, in fact, found an avenue to explore her interests for fashion designing from her. Her granny used to have a suitcase full of cut fabrics from her clients and Yonelle, who was then in grade 1 and 2, would hand-sew these to make fashionable dresses for her Barbie dolls. “All my friends used to be so envious of my Barbie doll clothes - I had the most exquisite casual and evening wear Barbie doll clothes…” she reminisces. Soon Yonelle developed her own unique sense of style and recalls that she would never leave the house without looking stylish. In fact, she would dress up even when she had no plans to go out and her mother would enquire, ‘Where are you going looking so fine, if I may ask?’ Describing fashion as a form of art and expression, she says, “Fashion is all about making it your own and owning that look. Fashionistas/ stylists know which clothes suits their personality, what works for their body type and what doesn’t.” To her, fashion is an ex-

tension of personality. “You can immediately see if a person is creative, serious or insecure by looking at what they are wearing. Fashion is a strong statement and can have a great deal of impact on a woman’s self confidence,” she maintains. Talking about her fashion foray in Oman, she points out that she first visited the country as a tourist in 2009, and made it her permanent home in 2012, becoming one of the founders and creators of ‘Amira La Petite Couture’, a luxury children’s boutique in Shatti Al Qurum, Muscat. In February this year, the team presented a fashion show at the ‘Oman Bride Show’ exhibition, wining an award for outstanding fashion show. “It was a huge milestone in my life to have started such an amazing venture in Oman, as an expatriate, and being only 25 years of age at the time of starting the company,” she notes. However, in June 2017, she sold her shares in the company to start a new and exciting venture on her own, which is due to be launched in 2018. “I have so many exciting plans and ideas for the future… I never stop dreaming, for I am a go-getter and always think of new business opportunities. Failure does not scare me; I will get up and fight until I reach my goals. I am excited to launch my new company in the coming year, which I expect will be my dream come true; it is what I have worked hard for all these years of learning and growing,” she states.

Al Khonji, who has made winning a habit, is the founder of Qais United Enterprises Trading and Genesis International. He has been a central figure in the sultanate’s entrepreneurial scene for several years. He launched his first company Qais United Enterprises Trading in 2010, followed by IT solutions firm Genesis International in 2012. A year later he established an enhanced oil recovery business, Genesis Projects and Investments LLC – EOR Lab Services.

Following his listing in the Top 10 GCC Entrepreneurs by Gulf Business, he attributed this new feather in his entrepreneurial cap to the financial performance of his companies. Talking to FACES about his personal achievement and the honour from Gulf Business, he defined it as a motivator to do more and achieve even greater heights. “I started my business in oil and gas at a very tough time in the region, but we have made it… This will encourage me further towards success,” he maintained. Tracing his entrepreneurial journey in Oman, he stated: “I started in 2010, but some of the ventures didn’t take off. So, my actual success started some time in 2013, with my current company Genesis projects

eeting with entrepreneur Aijaz Ahmed Kurpal of Ethnic Home was a sheer accident, and, honestly, it has been a blessing in disguise. It is an enchanting place with old treasures and beautiful trinkets. Located on the first floor of the Azaiba Mall, it has on display items ranging from aesthetic furniture to old-styled telephones and gramophone… It is a travel back to the past. Aijaz attributes his business to an early hobby where he would up-cycle any kind of waste that he would find in the backyard of his home. Eventually, as he gleaned information on the environmental benefits of such up-cycling projects, he took on the initiative of converting his passion into a business. Today, Aijaz runs this ‘makebelieve’ antique shop, whose items project an ancient look, but are not necessarily from yesteryear. The focus is on creating unique pieces, he admits, pointing out the sofa that has been upholstered from used jeans. Buyers are not scammed into thinking the pieces are from another era, nor are they overpriced to add to the enigma of novelty.

The outlet, which opened in March, last year, began with the objective of showcasing the product-line to interior designers. But, as word of mouth spread and brought clients directly to the outlet to see and feel the products, it soon got converted into a retail showroom. One would, of course, be curious to know where this modern Aladdin gets his merchandise - certainly not from the genie or the Magic Lamp… Aijaz explains that he has a manufacturing facility in India where he produces most of the items, while others are outsourced from different parts of the country. He is, however, keen to set his own factory in Oman, where he could share his knowledge of up-cycling industrial waste to interested youth. What began as an individual effort for Aijaz has now turned into a team work, with inputs from buyers around the world, which are incorporated into the designs to turn them into practical products and not just as showpieces

Aida: The seventh season opens with Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Aida’ on the 14th, 16th, and 17th of September. The opera is set in the Old Kingdom when Egypt was at war with Ethiopia. An Egyptian military commander, Radamès, struggles to choose between his love for the enslaved Nubian princess Aida and his loyalty to the Pharaoh, while Aida, heir to the endangered Nubian King, must face the conflict between her love for the military commander Radamès and her loyalty to her father Amonasro and her people. L’occasione fa il ladro (Opportunity makes a Thief): Gioachino Rossini’s light one-act opera will be performed on the 27th and 28th of October; it tells the story of identity theft and mixed-up rival lovers. The ballet is performed by Kazakhstan’s prestigious Astana Opera Ballet Company and tells the story of Odette, a young woman transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer. It is only at night that Odette can emerge as her human self. The spell will be broken if a prince swears eternal fidelity to Odette. A prince passes by the lake during a hunting expedition

Cinderella: This modern, abstract fantasy ballet, performed by Ballet de L’Opera de Lyon, will be presented on the 21st and 22nd of December in the evening, with an afternoon matinée on the 23rd. This unusual and intriguing interpretation of the ballet ‘Cinderella’ is set in a doll’s house with costumes to suit. This avant-garde, break-through version of the tale of Cinderella, described as a brilliant theatrical triumph, has toured the world, and is widely acclaimed for its amazing manipulation of mood,

intriguing narrative, and innovative staging.

Concerts

Homage to Luciano Pavarotti: An important highlight of the season will be a tribute to one of the world’s all-time greatest opera singers, the legendary Luciano Pavarotti. To honour the man who made the world love opera, a gala concert will be performed on the 14th of December by some of today’s top opera stars. They will sing a number of Pavarotti’s greatest arias such as ‘Nessun Dorma’ (None shall Sleep) and ‘La Donna e Mobile’ (Woman is Fickle). In addition, ROHM will hold an exhibition of treasured Pavarotti memorabilia. Cliff Richard: Knighted in 1995 for his remarkable contribution to popular music, the British singer and musician Sir Cliff Richard will be giving a concert on the 7th of October. He has sold more than 250 million records worldwide with many gold and platinum hits. In the UK, sales of his singles have exceeded twenty-one million, making Sir Cliff Richard the third-best-selling artist in UK Singles Chart history. Ann Hampton Callaway (The Streisand Songbook): This concert will be performed on the 29th of November. mazing… We concur with Seung Ho Seok, head chef and proprietor of the Amazing Kitchen restaurant, whose moniker - ‘Amazing’ - befits everything that spells food in the restaurant. Not only was the chicken, crisp fried in spice and soy sauce, amazing, every dish on our luncheon menu, from Kimchi Jeon to Bi Bim Bab was absolutely amazing! Seok’s unpretentious approach to décor, whether in the façade or the interior, is reflective of his modest personality. Even as he hosted for us a festive spread of some of the choicest dishes on the menu, he hardly made his presence felt, letting us devour our lunch with abandon. He would only pop up to pronounce the Korean name for us and demonstrate, in his own quiet way, his love for cooking and for all things Korean.

the background and music videos of young Korean dancers screening on the large television set. We have to admit that Korean food was a novelty to our palate, but we weren’t apprehensive about the luncheon, having read all the rave reviews from foodies and the media. We were, in fact, looking forward to the Korean Kimchi and the Japchae. And were we in for a treat… The dishes came marching to our table like food soldiers, all assigned to keep us busy with scrumptious starters, mains, sides and the quintessential Korean tea. While the names of the dishes took some learning to get the pronunciation right, recalling them has been another task. Like this dish with glass noodles in it… It is called Japchae and is said to be one of the most popular Korean dishes – even at Amazing Kitchen Restaurant, most guests choose it over the others. The dish is a sight to behold with colours so vivid. Packed with stir-fried potato glass noodles and mixed vegetables, the Japchae stays with you long after you have burped your satisfaction. Another popular Korean starter on our menu was the DukBokki, a dish of seasoned rice and fish cakes with chilli paste and vegetables. The confluence of vegetables, rice and fish, in a rich gravy, gives it a wholesome taste and feel. The Kimchi Jeon, in contrast, is a crispy fried starter; it is a Korean style

pancake and quite a scrumptious affair. Another Kimchi that we savoured came in the form of a soup. It is a tangy and spicy soup with tuna and vegetables. With dishes coming in quick succession to our table, we stopped keeping a count on the starters and the mains. The generous portion sizes and appetising presentations was all that got our attention. And, of course, the taste. We made sure that we had a sampling of everything that came to our table, to compare and make notes on what to repeat the next time we visit Amazing Kitchen. While Japchae will most definitely feature in our next tryst with the restaurant, what will also remain the highlight of our current Korean rendezvous is the ‘Ju Mul Leok’, marinated beef with garlic sauce, which is barbecued right on the table on an electric grill, with onions, mushrooms, garlic and green chilli. We quite relished the Bi Bim Bab with the bulls-eye egg resting on top of a bed of rice and a variety of fresh vegetables. It is accompanied with chilli paste and a clear soup, making it a complete meal by itself. Interestingly, the main course is complemented with an array of sides, including Korean dry fish, squids and rolled eggs among others.

Japchae

The big platter of Half and Half Dak Gang Jung took us completely by surprise. This large platter, filled with two heaps of chicken, is just what a hungry stomach needs. It features two portions of fried chicken - half with spice sauce and half soy sauce and an accompaniment of shredded cabbage. The luncheon also got us to taste a Korean version of sushi called KimBab. To give our luncheon a proper Korean finale, we sipped on warm Korean Green Tea and made our bows in appreciation of an amazing meal.

Indulge your fancy for Korean food with these easy-to-prepare recipes

Spicy Cabbage Kimchi Ingredients: l l l l l l l l l

2 heads Napa cabbage (a type of Chinese cabbage) 1 ¼ cups sea salt 1tbsp fish sauce 5 green onions, chopped 1 small white onion, minced 2 cloves garlic, pressed 2tbsp white sugar 1tsp ground ginger 5tbsp Korean chili powder (or Kashmiri chili powder or Cayenne pepper flakes)

Place the cabbage in a large container which has a fitting lid. Stir in the fish sauce, green onions, white onion, garlic, sugar and ginger. Sprinkle the Korean chili powder over the mixture (if needed, wear kitchen gloves while rubbing the chili). Seal the container and set in a cool dry place. Leave it undisturbed for four days. Refrigerate before serving. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Cut the cabbages in half lengthwise and trim the ends. Rinse and cut into pieces of about two-inch square. Place the cabbage in a large re-sealable bag and sprinkle salt on the leaves and use your hands to rub it on the leaves and coat them evenly. Seal the bag and leave at room temperature for six hours or overnight. Rinse the salt from the cabbage leaves; drain and squeeze out any excess liquid.

Bulgogi - Korean BBQ Beef Ingredients: l l l l l l l l l l l l l

1/4 yellow onion, thinly sliced 2 green onions, chopped (separate dark green parts separated from white and light green parts) 1/3 cup soy sauce 3tbsp white sugar 2tbsp toasted sesame seeds 3 cloves garlic, minced 1tbsp sesame oil 1/4tsp Korean red pepper flakes 1/4tsp minced fresh ginger 1/8tsp ground black pepper 1 1/2 pounds beef sirloin steak, cut into thin pieces 1tsp honey (or to taste) Salt to taste

Combine yellow onion, white and light green parts of green onions, soy sauce, sugar, sesame seeds, garlic, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, ginger, salt and black pepper in a bowl and mix well. Add steak slices to the marinade mixture; cover and refrigerate from an hour to one day. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Now, in batches, cook and stir steak and marinade together in the hot skillet, adding honey to caramelize the steak. Stir until steak is cooked through – it might take about five minutes. Garnish bulgogi with green onions.

Roasted Pumpkin and Garlic Soup Ingredients: l l l l l l l l l l l l

4 cups pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and diced 1 pod whole garlic/ 10-12 garlic cloves 1 large red onion, cut into chunks 1 cup bell pepper chunks (red & green) 1 cube vegetable stock 2 tsp tomato paste 2 tbsp oil Parsley leaves, for garnishing 2-3 tsp brown sugar 1-2 tsp lemon juice Salt and pepper, for seasoning Dash of cream, for garnishing (optional)

Heat oil on a very low flame, put parsley leaves and fry for a minute or until just crisp, but still green in 7. colour. Remove on absorbent paper. Pour the oil left in pan to the baking tray, put all vegetables (pumpkin, bell peppers, onions and whole garlic) in it, season well with salt and pepper and toss to coat well with oil and seasoning.

Bake in pre-heated oven at 220˚C for 25-30 minutes. Remove the garlic from vegetables and peel them off. In a large saucepan, add all roasted vegetables and half the quantity of roasted garlic, add stock cube and roast on low flame until stock is mixed. Add tomato paste, sugar and lemon, roast for further 2 minutes, add 3 ¼ cup of hot water, let it simmer for 2-3 minutes. Season well with salt and pepper if required. Add little more water if soup is too thick and adjust seasoning. Blend them together in a blender, crush few parsley leaves with fingertips and add to soup. To serve, pour soup in deep dish, garnish with crispy parsley leaves, garlic cloves and cream.

Cheese Egg and Mushroom Toast cups Ingredients: l l l l l l l l l l l

8 large bread slices (white/brown) ½ cup cheddar cheese, grated 4 eggs ½ cup cooking cream 4 tbsp milk 1 ½ cups button mushroom (brown and white), sliced 1 cup baby spinach 2 cloves garlic, chopped 3-4 tbsp oil Salt and pepper for seasoning 1 large muffin tray

Method:

1. Pre-heat oven to 180˚C. 2. Generously, grease muffin tray with oil, place bread slices in it; gently press down to give cup shape and make a well to pour the filling in. Brush oil on the corners of bread hanging out. 3. In a large pan, heat oil on low, add garlic, toss for few seconds and add mushrooms. Sauté mushrooms on high flame until well roasted; season it with salt and pepper and remove from fire. 4. In a pouring jug, mix eggs, cream, milk and cheese, season with salt and pepper. 5. Now put mushroom and spinach leaves in bread cups, distributing equally, pour eggs and cheese mixture on top to cover mushrooms and spinach. 6. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until eggs are cooked and bread is golden brown. 7. Let the cups rest for 3-4 minutes in muffin tray, run a bread knife around the edges to loosen it; remove gently. Serve hot with ketchup or any sauce of your choice or just like that.

The early phase

This is followed by very mild changes where you will not outwardly notice anything amiss but there may be small changes or differences in behaviour. For example, forgetting a word or misplacing something – this, of course, might also be dismissed as a mere sign of ageing.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it is a group of disorders that impairs mental functioning. Often, the disease progresses, rather unfolds in stages; however, the symptoms may vary in different patients.

The third stage is where mild decline happens, when you will see changes in the way he/she is thinking or reasoning. It could be something as obvious as forgetting something that he/she just read or common trouble in recalling names.

Music has healing powers, and for patients with Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it could play a role in help recall memories. Music could take them back to the memorable times in the past. The music you choose could also help

calm the patient and create a more conducive environment.

Technology

While assistive technology has proven to be effective in promoting independence and managing potential safety risks around the house, Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s patients can also benefit from electronic tablets to stay calm and reduce stress. Encourage the patient to carry one along to increase their interaction and communication with relatives.

Like for most physical and mental problems, the outdoors has therapeutic value even for dementia

ven though it is still scorching hot outside, summer is technically over and I feel like this is the perfect time to try out the season’s most controversial clothing item - the romper (‘Romphim’ to anyone who’s masculinity is fragile). What is a romper? It’s essentially a one piece and, despite being mostly popular in a baby’s wardrobe, it has made its way to the grown-up sections of stores. now, women have been wearing them for a while and they come in different styles, but earlier this summer they were introduced for men. The Internet blew up back in May/june and everyone was talking about them, mostly negatively. They became the joke of the Internet because people compared them to the baby onesies. clearly, anyone who’s a media sheep and is easily influenced would have forgotten that women wear them, and I’m pretty sure coveralls (construction, field engineering, etc.) falls under the same category. Also, let’s not forget that james Bond (Sean connery) donned them back in 1964. Anyway, I decided to take some time to invest in a custom-made pair (2…fine it’s 4). I took them out for a test drive at a casual gathering at a friend’s place to test the wear ability, and it fit like a glove. A week later, I wore the other one to a karaoke night and performing the hannah Montana song that night was extremely easy - because of the durability of the romper. In conclusion, rompers are brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, neverthe-same, and totally unique; I recommend them

Meethaq ‘Back to school with Baraem’

Meethaq, the pioneer of Islamic banking in Oman from Bank Muscat, hosted an event at Muscat Grand Mall to promote financial literacy and savings habit among children. Targeted at children below 12 years of age, Meethaq Baraem Account is the first Shari’a based children’s savings account in Oman. The account can be opened by parents/guardians on behalf of children. Baraem helps parents to save on behalf of children and at the same time inculcate the savings habit among children. On opening the account, a special welcome kit comprising Baraem Recognition Card entitles cardholders to discounts at various outlets, including book shops, restaurants and children’s clothing stores. Activity books and educational aids which spark creativity are also gifted to account holders.

Oman Air signed codeshare agreement with Gulf Air

Oman Air recently launched a new codeshare agreement with Gulf Air, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national carrier, which sees the airlines’ combined frequencies between Bahrain and Muscat at 6 daily flights. This new codeshare provides customers enhanced flight connectivity possibilities with Oman Air to various destinations across both carries networks. Abdulrahman Al Busaidy, Deputy CEO and Chief Commercial Officer, of Oman Air commented: “Through this code share, Oman Air offers its guests a combined frequency of six daily flights. The new Muscat International Airport is also due to open soon, which will give our Bahrain-based guests an exciting opportunity to connect to our global network through a world class facility.” Oman Air currently serves up to 55 destinations worldwide.

Shell supports Road Safety awareness campaign

As part of their ongoing efforts to promote road safety in the Sultanate, Shell Oman, Petroleum Development Oman and Oman OLNG have launched a collaborative road safety awareness raising campaign in Salalah, in coordination with the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA). This joint effort comes with the aim of spreading the message of safe driving emphasizing on adhering to speed limits, not using mobile phones while driving, and wearing seatbelts at all times. The campaign is set to cover ROP’s Wadi Hurait checkpoint and three Shell Service Stations, namely: Rabat Service Station, Green Line Service Station, and Raysut Service Station.

Majid Al Futtaim to develop RO45 million City Centre Sohar

Majid Al Futtaim will grow its existing portfolio of pioneering malls in Oman with City Centre Sohar. The mall, located in the Northern Governorate’s historic capital Sohar, is due to open in late 2018. Conveniently located on Batinah Highway, the mall will add 40,000m2 of gross leasable area to the Sultanate’s booming retail sector. Sohar, a port city and major industrial hub, has seen substantial economic growth in recent years, which Majid Al Futtaim is keen to contribute to. The construction contract for City Centre Sohar has been awarded to the Oman-based company Al Turki Enterprise and the work will commence in November 2017. City Centre Sohar has set a target to achieve LEED Gold status – the coveted energy-efficient design certification – within three months of opening.

SalamAir celebrates six months of operational milestones

SalamAir has achieved remarkable results during its first six months of operation. Backed by a growing fleet of A320s, the airline has been able to expand its operations to include nine destinations and has opened the skies for more than 223,765 guests flying over 2,128,272 kilometers across the region to experience its valueadded service offering. The airline has created 180 direct jobs, achieving 56 percent Omanisation rate; it is committed to reach the regulatory 60 percent Omanisation rate at the earliest possible and is currently preparing to enroll a new batch of cabin crew into its training program as it looks forward to the next stage of its network growth. The 24/7 SalamAir Call Centre is 100 percent run by Omanis.

Camaro ZL1 hits 320 km/h with 10-speed automatic transmission Nissan Patrol and Super Safari

With a top speed of 318 km/h, the Camaro ZL1 Coupe is the ‘fastest Camaro ever.’ Chevrolet recently put the ZL1’s performance capabilities to the test on the High Speed Oval at Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg GmBH proving ground. Do you fancy having your very own cloud in your living room, or say the bedroom? With the new Floating Cloud from Brooklyn-based designer Richard Clarkson, you may well give in to your fancy. It is a magnetically levitating ambient lamp that flickers through different coloured LED modes in response to the sound in a room. The new Floating Cloud lamp can levitate 2.75 inches (70 mm) off its base and contains an embedded microphone that senses the sound in its environment, allowing for it to visually respond to music or voices in four different lighting styles. The cloud itself is made of a hypoallergenic polyester fibre and holds a hidden embedded lithium ion 6600 mAh battery.

Bites Marvin was in the hospital on his death bed. The family called Marvin’s preacher to be with him in his final moments. As the preacher stood by the bed, Marvin’s condition seemed to deteriorate, and Marvin motioned for someone to quickly pass him a pen and paper. The preacher quickly got a

Jim’s wife was in labour and Jim was a nervous wreck. After what seemed like a week, to both Jim and the hospital staff, a nurse came out with the happy news, ‘It’s a girl’, she cried. ‘Thank God, a girl’, said Jim, ‘at least she won’t have to go through what I just went through!’

WEIRD NEWS Lobster has cold?

Italy’s highest court has ruled that lobsters must not be kept on ice in restaurant kitchens, as it causes them unjustifiable suffering before they are cooked for fine diners. The ruling followed a complaint by an animal rights group against the owner of a restaurant, who kept live crustaceans on ice. He was ordered to pay a 2,000 Euro fine and a further 3,000 Euros in legal fees. The court ruled that the fact that lobsters are usually cooked while still alive does not mean they can be mistreated beforehand.

In what appears to be a culinary revolution, a start-up in Brussels is pushing crunchy crickets as a protein alternative to meat. It said its crickets, which can be eaten dried, in different flavours such as garlic or tomato, or turned into flour, were also friendlier on the environment compared to some cattle farming. Eating insects is a common practice in countries such as China, Ghana, Mexico and Thailand.

Victorian widows were expected to wear black mourning clothes for two years after their husbands’ deaths.

While vintage clothing refers to clothing made between 20 and 100 years ago, retro refers to recently made clothing that is designed to resemble the style of another period.

Eyeliner became popular after its discovery in King Tutankhamun’s tomb in the 1920s.

It became more socially acceptable for women to wear shorts during World War 2, when fabric rationing was introduced and women were forced to take on more masculine jobs.

Christian Dior is credited with inspiring 1950s fashion; he designed both the pencil skirt and the A-line skirt.

The skirt is the second oldest piece of clothing, outdated only by the loincloth.

Living dolls…

A Spanish firm has made eerily realistic human babies, which look, move and feel almost exactly like a newborn. It has also made aliens and fictional characters. The entire range of ‘Reborn Babies’ was on display at a trade fair in Spain. Some of the basic silicone dolls cost almost 600 Euros, while high-end models, equipped with motors that make the doll appear to breathe or suck on a pacifier, cost nearly 5,000 Euros. In addition to human babies, and ones that look like the blue aliens from the film ‘Avatar’, the company makes baby chimpanzees, tiny mermaids and infants with elf-style pointed ears.
