‘Feel the Beat’ As a part of a wellness initiative in partnership with Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and Sobeh Medical Center, City Centre Muscat, Al Mouj Muscat and City Centre Qurum have launched ‘Feel the Beat’ to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Now in its third year, the initiative aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular health, with a special focus on women in the Sultanate.

City Centre Muscat, Al Mouj Muscat and City Centre Qurum will have allocated areas to host medical professionals who will administer complimentary heart health tests and conduct check-ups for women. At each designated location, visitors will be able to check their blood pressure, blood sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if they are at risk of heart diseases and if they would require a follow-up consultation for further analysis. Medical experts will be at Al Mouj Muscat, the Walk, on September 29 -30, City Centre Muscat on October 5 - 6 and City Centre Qurum on October 13 - 14 to administer these tests.

As a young girl she was driven by the idea of becoming a hairdresser, even cutting her own hair. For Demi Lovato, working with Lil Wayne was ‘a dream come true’. Gushing over the collaboration, which sees the rapper performing in Demi’s sixth studio album, ‘Tell Me You Love Me’, she told fans at a private album launch that she always wanted to collaborate with him. “My album has Lil Wayne on it, and the inner-hip-hop wannabe star that I am is freaking out. My inner-rapper is going crazy.”

Following accusations from his former girlfriend’s mother and lawyer that he was responsible for the death of Cathriona White, Carrey has unleashed allegations of extortion. He is fighting back against accusations that he was responsible for the death by suicide of his former girlfriend Cathriona.

Carrey’s attorney has filed a cross-complaint against White’s mother, Brigid Sweetman, and husband, Mark Burton, who blame Carrey for her 2015 death. Carrey’s lawyer has claimed that the lawsuit is nothing more than an attempt to exploit the public vulnerability of a famous actor.

According to an entertainment magazine, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are on the verge of a $300 million divorce. The report speculates that the couple’s marriage is in jeopardy, as they are fighting over the kids and their career priorities. The rumours came about following the Emmys, as Timberlake decided to perform at Rock in Rio, instead of accompanying Biel, who was a presenter at the Emmys. This was seen as a sure sign of trouble in the marriage.

But the two have since been seen together at other concerts, and sources have pushed the rumours aside saying Timberlake had committed to the performance at Rock much before Biel was asked to play a role at the Emmys.

The mechanics of laughter With global media hailing this as the golden age of comedy, is it any wonder that Oman is fast finding its weekend groove in the comic acts of stand up comedians ruling the entertainment roost?

E

verything, seemingly everything, is a laughing matter these days. And it is thanks, in no small measure, to instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp that have given comedy an unprecedented edge over everything else. Whether it is a superfluous good morning message, a new joke or a funny gif video, WhatsApp has made laughter a ritual and has, to some extent, shifted people’s appetite for humour to a binge phase.

It is, perhaps, this demand for humour that has helped widen the berth for stand up comedians in this part of the world too. The apparent growth in numbers and strength of home grown comedians is a case in point. With hotels, and even stand alone restaurants opening up their doors for entertainment of the comedy kind, the tribe is set to grow further.

Everyone, it appears, wants to laugh, and those in the audience are relentless in their demands for ha-ha. As one laughter guru observed, it probably stems from the growing restlessness from all things digital and

the strong desire to talk and be talked to by people who have mastered the art of injecting comic flavours into embarrassing situations, which most people have experienced or can relate to.

But then, comedy is a serious business, more so with digital media saturating the laughter industry with unending streams of innuendos, one-liners and jokes. For a stand-up comedian, facing the audience and instigating a laugh riot, every time, is a serious business; turning everyday issues into comedies that are original in their content and presentation requires talent and perseverance. For, the public, especially the ones grown on daily doses of laughter, are a fastidious lot.

In the following cover story, we present two of Oman’s noted stand up comedians, Abbas Al Lawati and Sami Al Asmi, who share their journey in this industry, which is witnessing a bright and promising growth with several local youth finding their bearing in comedy.

Business of Laughter Oman’s well known comedian Abbas Al Lawati takes stock of his laughter business to share his passion for the craft and his belief in his talent to make comedy a full time career

F

rom a structured life in the world of finance to an uncharted foray in the business of laughter, Abbas Al Lawati’s stake in the latter is by dint of sheer determination. A banker and an auditor by profession, he made an unprecedented career move when he quit his lucrative job, three years ago, to take up comedy as a full time career.

Having broken the norms and having raised the eyebrows of many naysayers, he decided to stop moonlighting and concentrate solely on comedy. It was ironical, in some ways, as people do not associate humour with finance.

“It is pretty opposite of what I did,” quips Abbas, who has been doing comedy for close to 10 years now.

The comic bug first bit him when he started travelling to Dubai to compete in the comedy fests. “One was the Dubai Comedy Festival where there were over 40 comedians who came in from all over the Gulf - I was the runner up,” he recalls, hastening to add that the guy who won the top slot deserved it completely. “We comedians do not feel jealous of each other,” he adds as an aside.

Following that, he partook in the ‘Beat the Gong’ contest, which is described as the most brutal comedy nights of Dubai. This was during his banking stint and that meant giving up weekends and sleep to manage the strict schedules. He won the contest – decided by audience clap-out – twice, and that, alongside a complement he received from a producer of ‘Axis of Evil’ about his performance at the Dubai Comedy Festival, in a way, sealed his fate for a future in comedy. He was gaining

recognition back home too, more so in the corporate sector, having opened for Maz Jobrani twice.

But Abbas’ full time entry was not a random move. “When I quit my job, I had my savings – it was all planned. I didn’t do this blindly. Before I quit my job, for about 3 years or more, I was constantly thinking of doing comedy full time,” he says, adding that he did have to make several adjustments. He knew he’d have to tone down his lifestyle and, as he puts it, “survive on shawarmas and stop eating pastas… But I was ready to make those compromises.

It’s the price you have to pay for your passion, and I was ready to pay.”

Humor Infection

His commitment to his craft soon materialised in a comic brand called Humor Infection, which is operational on all social media platforms, including YouTube. It was the niggling desire to take his art to another level that saw him putting together videos to reach out to the corporate sector and clients who want to check out the fare.

Since the conceptualisation of the brand, he is on a talent hunt, 24/7, to pick the best Oman has to offer and groom them to stand up and play comedy. “The principle behind Humor Infection is ‘keep it original; do not steal jokes’.

That’s the golden rule of comedy. There is only so much you can do after stealing someone’s joke or style. I tell my comedians to watch other comedians, learn from the best, but don’t copy the best. There’s a difference - a thin line between learning and copying. In comedy you cannot survive if you are not original,” he notes.

But comedy is not easy. It is so much more than reeling out jokes. It is about body language, punctuation, the tone and that attitude. There is a lot of work that goes behind writing a 15-minute routine. “When I just started comedy, to polish a 15-minute routine, were I would be confident that everyone is going to laugh at every joke, would take me at least 4 months… Comedy is a very potent form of poetry, so every word that goes in has to be calculated. You need to understand what people want to hear, and also don’t want to hear. They usually want you to rush to the punch line. They are selfish folks who just want to laugh,” he muses.

With instant feedback, unlike other forms of entertainment, it is the audience that plays a big role in making or marring a show. It is not always easy. “I tell my comics that there is a very thin line between trying too hard and not giving a damn about your audience. You are bound to have

one member in the audience who is not there to laugh – some people are just so sad in life - nothing can make them laugh,” opines Abbas.

Fortunately, heckling is not a common trend in Oman. The audience is very supportive and receptive, he notes, but believes that they need to be seasoned, just like comedians. “They need to learn how to behave in a comedy show,” he adds, pointing out that people who sit down for the show after partying hard, tend to talk loudly when the comedian is performing.

To ease such situations, the team has found ways to quietly approach the ones who are disturbing and ask them to tone it down.

The Shows

Humor Infection comprises of a diverse mix of talented comedians.

Currently, there are 11 comedians, including Abbas, in addition to a graphic designer and a DJ (Teddy).

The shows are mainly in English, but

plans are on to introduce Arabic as well as Hinglish – a blend of Hindi and English – shows and incorporate ‘roasts’, one of which was successfully presented, recently.

For Abbas, personally, it is English that works. He calls his style ‘observational humour’ and explains it thus: “You see me throw a boomerang, but don’t see it come back and hit you in the back of the head. Now, that is the punch line that I am going to crack…”

Of course, there is a lot of practice that is called for to keep those preshow jitters at bay. Abbas rehearses in front of the mirror and even studies his hand gestures to perfect the routine. And that is because practice makes his performance look relaxed and spontaneous and helps blur the line between his onstage and offstage personality. “The biggest complement a comic can get, which I got too, is Abbas, what you are on stage you are off stage too… As a comic, it is very important that you are transparent with the audience. Do not

hesitate to embarrass yourself. They are spending their money, giving you their time; leaving their families and sitting over there watching you just talk. You have to make sure it works, and how do you make it work…you open yourself like a book. There are some comics who hesitate to be stupid on the stage and may attribute an embarrassing situation to a friend or relative. Why do that? Put it on yourself. The more truth you have in your joke the more validation you have. Audience relate to such incidents,” he explains.

The market is very competitive and every comic has spoken about everything there is to say. And that calls for writing down ideas and finetuning them to ensure at least some will

click. That also means understanding the sensitivities of the audience and refraining from jokes that might not go down well. Jokes on politics and religion are avoided, and so are jokes that are said to draw cheap laughs.

“As a comic, there are these ethics you have to follow. Comics are ethical people, we present comedies based on reality,” points out Abbas.

The jokes are also dependent on the venue, as cuss words, which are common in pubs and clubs, are not encouraged at corporate events. “We have to toe the line, as ultimately we are entertainers. If you believe that without cuss words you can’t make anyone laugh, then you are not an entertainer,” he stresses.

Companies today are opting to hire comedians to come and cheer up the staff at their annual meetings or dos. This has provided the perfect boost for comedians seeking to make a career out of their skill. According to Abbas, to survive as a comic you need such corporate shows.

The growing popularity of comedians in Oman has made the venues, pubs and restaurants, sought after weekend destinations. The restaurants charge a nominal cover fee, which are redeemable on food and drinks, making it convenient for everyone.

“People are coming out to support and are ready to spend,” states Abbas, who headlines Humor Infection shows.

As he explains, “Stand up comedy is growing. Earlier, when I used to say I do stand-up comedy, people would be like, is it drama…? But now, when I say I am doing stand-up, they are like, really. They are awed. People today are aware of the format called stand up comedy.”

Comedy,an antidote for stress Sami Al Salmi of Oman Comedy Central fame, has several comic aces up his sleeve, as he presents some here with his quick repartee to a FACES questionnaire

perform every night at a wretched club, get regular gigs at an established comedy club and then have big shows or specials.

I started performing with Oman Comedy Central in 2010, but it wasn’t until 2015, with recurring shows, that I was able to establish a good thirty minute set.

Tell us about yourself, how do you like to be known – as a comedian, radio host, corporate executive…?

As Sami Al Asmi.

I wear multiple hats all the time, one of them is running Oman’s first standup comedy group, Oman Comedy Central. I’m a man of many talents so I need to keep busy.

What was the spur that made you consider comedy as a line of work?

I first saw an Oman Comedy Central performance at a 2010 show in Al Falaj Hotel - by coincidence. I became a heckler during the show, and then decided I could become a comedian myself, to give me the license to throw shade at other comedians in the future.

How did you initiate your journey into the world of standup comedy?

A colleague from work, who was a member of Oman Comedy Central, had been performing for some time.

He used to buy all the DVD specials online and we would discuss who our favorite standup comedians were and which of their latest performances to watch.

It quickly inspired me to want to perform my own material.

What has been your winning act?

Talking about Oman’s ‘Beauty has an address’ slogan – because, we still use the PO Box system and don’t have any addresses!

How long did it take to establish your credentials as a stand-up comedian?

I still wouldn’t call myself an established standup comedian. That would need me to

Our monthly show at Radisson Blu, Muscat helps me and other comedians of Oman Comedy Central to develop our material, polish our delivery and intensify our stage presence on a regular basis.

What is your personal definition of comedy?

Comedy is the source of laughter; but more so standup comedy is an antidote to society’s daily stress and pressure.

Would you say Oman’s environment is upbeat for stand-up comedians?

If no, what would you say is the need of the hour?

Honestly, we need more standup comedy. Most people in Oman haven’t experienced standup comedy yet, either watching online or live. We need to increase the demand through awareness and more shows.

What are the challenges you faced on your way?

The main challenge is finding time to write new jokes and rehearse. Not only do I work a full-time job and recently co-founded a new business, but I also help organise the comedy shows by arranging for a new international comedian to fly to Oman every month for our show at Radisson Blu, Muscat. The biggest challenge I faced, and continue to face, is carving out time to dedicate to my

personal comedy writing. However, a lot of things I experience while being busy tend to make its way into my comedy as observational humour.

Have you had to face hecklers?

People heckle for a reason; I try to find out what that reason is. Either they don’t understand what is being joked about, or rather misunderstand. Or, perhaps, they didn’t plan on attending a comedy show in the first place. The best case scenario is to tease the heckler kindly; but if things escalate then I get to play the bouncer of the show, as well as a comedian.

How big is the market for stand-up comedians in Oman? Do you think it could become a full time career?

Oman is definitely too small of a market, at the moment, to be a full-time stand-up comedian - unless I find a wife that will pay me an allowance.

Is there scope for new Omani entrants?

We are looking for new faces all the time.

What do you think are the prerequisites to carve your niche in this budding industry?

Sense of humour - everything else can be taught.

With television channels churning out comedy serials and the social media presenting an easy platform for sharing jokes and funny videos round the clock, do you think you have to raise the comedy bar every time to meet the demands of the audience?

Oman is unique in the diversity of the crowd. Comedians have a challenge here to find topics that everyone can relate to – men, women, long time expatriates, fresh expatriates, tourists and Omanis. Of course, you have to keep things fresh and not copy from other comedy shows, but you also have to focus on who the audience is and how to relate to them.

Personally, what kind of jokes makes you laugh?

Witty observational humour.

How do you deal with people who expect you to crack a joke or two even when you are not performing?

I purposely tell lame jokes to disappoint them.

A Flash of ‘Titan’ Joseph Sims, General Manager of Titan Events and Entertainment and Founder of Oman Comedy Central, has his finger on the entertainment pulse of Oman with comedy and corporate events that have seen him initiating the production of video mapping and a new beach party facility, similar to Ibiza

oseph Sims has the creative license as a stand-up comedian and he knows how to use it…

As the founder of Oman Comedy Central (OCC) he has taken the comedy benchmark in the country to an all new level, hosting international comedians and staging monthly performances that have flavoured the city’s comic sense. OCC has helped spawn a strong team of local comedians, and Joseph, who is popularly known as Joe in the entertainment industry, has helped shape talented folks and created avenues to test their skills.

Curiously though, it wasn’t comedy that brought Joe to Oman in 2003; it was a posting as an IT contractor. But, as he points out, he got ‘tired of it’ after some time.

“So I put my money where my mouth was and set up this event (Titan Events & Entertainment) management company,” he quips.

The early years were tough,

but, over the years, things have moved in the right direction. 2016 was a tough year, admits Joe, pointing out that the hospitality industry bore the biggest brunt of the economic slowdown, behind the oil and gas industry. “But this year we started out very strong.

Our business is up 200 percent over 2016, and we are actually looking to hire – that’s an indication of a strong base,” he observes.

Besides comedy, he also has a strong background as a DJ, having begun DJing at the age of 15, as DJ G.I. Joe. His father was a DJ, his two brothers, and his son, are DJs! A family man, Joe has three grown kids living in Seattle, Washington and New Orleans, Louisiana.

His flair for music and a natural trait for comedy have helped forge his event company ahead, with exciting options for the public to experience entertainment at newer levels. As Joe points out, “Event management can be pretty competitive… But if everyone is offering the exact same thing, how competitive is it?”

Titan’s focus is on offering creative solutions to clients; one such has been the introduction of the technology of video mapping to Oman. “We offer video mapping services from a world champion design house.

We did a birthday party last month, where we did video mapping of a birthday cake. Soon, we will take it to another level with building mapping (80m x 40m screen), which will make the public stand up and take notice,” he adds.

Another plan on the agenda, which is all set to become a reality soon, is the introduction of a new Ibiza style beach club

facility, which will raise the standard of partying in Oman, with DJs from countries around the world.

In addition, comedy lovers will be treated to shows produced by Titan in the first quarter of 2018, featuring regional comedians. Plans are on to put together a comedy festival, which will have comedians from around the world, where the winners will be voted by the audience. This will require sponsorships from companies here, but Joe is willing to take the risk, as the agenda of Titan is to present new entertainment options to the community. He also hopes to augment the success of their last show at Salalah, with regular gigs in the coming year.

For fans of OCC, Joe’s comedy may come across as a spontaneous act, but there is a lot of work, in addition to continuous improvisations while on stage. His fun-guy-to-be-around tag helped set his comedy career, but comedy, says Joe, has made him see things differently. “Now I see things that are potential jokes or potential punch lines and then it goes down in my joke book. As comedians, we have creative license to say whatever we want… This is one of the few occupations were we get paid to lie,” he quips.

I grew up in many homes as we moved quite a bit. I went to 13 schools before graduating high school. But it made me a better traveller. I have no problems making friends.

When I was a child I wanted to...

I wanted to be an architect, but life offered me other things along the way.

The moment that changed me forever...

Serving in the military is the thing that changed me the most. The way I think, the way I attack challenges, even the way I walk, can be traced back to my military service.

My greatest inspiration...

This is probably my mother. As a kid I watched her struggle as a single parent with two boys. I think this is the basis of my drive in life to achieve my goals.

If I could change one thing about myself...

When you are past 50 years of life there are many things people would want to change. But those are all cosmetic. At this point in my life I am happy in my own skin. Not many people can say that.

My next travel destination. I love to discover new countries. So I get pretty excited when a travel opportunity comes up.

My greatest regret...

Is the time I spent away from my kids.

They are so important, yet most people barely notice they are there.

You may not know it but I’m no good at...

Basketball! In my travels people always assume that I must be good at basketball. I know that the ball is round. But that is about the extent of my knowledge. So it really cracks me up when they finish fighting over what team will get me, and then discover that I can’t play.

You may not know it but I’m very good at…

DJ’ing. This has been passion since I was a teen. I had my own radio show at 17 in the San Francisco area.

If I have time to myself...

Go to the movies. It sounds like a simple thing, but I feel like the movies is a two-hour vacation from your life where you can be whisked away to another place. No phone, no meeting, no talking.

My Dream holiday destination...

As a diver, my dream destination is to dive in Truk Lagoon, Micronesia. The story is too long to tell here. But the short version is, it is the reverse of Pearl Harbour from World War II. It provides some of the best wreck diving in the world. I invite all divers to look it up.

My favourite weekend camping spot in Oman…

Camping on Mashirah Island. This is one of the few places left in Oman where you can have to whole beach to yourself for the weekend.

I will not leave my house without…

Cellphone, wallet, keys, notebook (the paper type).

Five things I like about Oman…

The people - unique to all of the Middle East; the geography - a nice variety for a desert country; the culture - exactly the opposite to the world’s perception of the Middle East; it’s neutral stance in world politics - no one hates Oman; the way our community mixes together.

Baby steps will still get you there.

Most people don’t have the patience for success. Success comes from looking at what you have achieved, not how far you have to go.

Retail, the next big thing!

Maimunah Shebani*, Managing Director of The Retail Agency, shares her perspectives on the growing retail sector and the need to raise awareness on the employment opportunities spiralling from the sector for local youth

What is The Retail Agency all about?

The Retail Agency is an Oman based boutique firm specialised in shopping centre and retail education. It was born to fulfil a need that exists in the job market for skilled retail professionals. The Retail Agency will provide the retail sector education programmes through expert retail courses engineered and powered by the Global Retail Academy. The Retail Agency and Global Retail Academy have developed a strategic partnership with the goal to provide Oman with a readily available pool of local skilled retail industry professionals prepared with employment prospects. The Retail Agency is the first of its kind in Oman and is fully backed by the Middle East Council of Shopping Centers (MECSC) headquartered in Dubai, and the International Council of Shopping Centers, with headquarters in New York.

How would you describe Oman’s retail industry?

We are in a transformative time, for retail, as an industry, is going through a massive change; it is expected to experience a significant growth in the next couple of years. There are several major new projects underway and shopping centre space is expected to increase by 63 percent by 2020.

Oman has a number of factors fuelling the sector. The demographics of the country being the foremost among them – Oman has a young population, with over 20 percent of the population between the ages of 20 to 30. Secondly, shopping centres have become an essential part of everyday family life and are embedded in the DNA of the social fabric of Oman. Lastly, the growing trend of doubleincome households and increase in disposable income in Oman plays a vital role.

The Retail sector in Oman is evolving and will play a major role in the Oman economy.

On the career front, what are the avenues open in the retail industry?

Retail is an industry that allows you to pick any passion and pursue it down an exciting career path, filled with endless opportunities for professional development and career advancement. No other industry offers more job

opportunities for people with limited education than the retail industry does today, as a lot of progression can be earned on the job and all you need are specific retail skills which can be gained through specialised training programmes.

The retail industry offers a variety of career paths, such as security, store management, leasing, marketing, operations, traffic management, loss prevention, visual merchandising, tenant coordination, construction, pop-up-retail, negotiation, logistics and understanding how the retail industry ticks. (The Retail sector also includes kiosks and online e-commerce businesses. As of 2017, online retail represents 12 percent of the retail industry in Oman.)

Why is Retail a smart career choice?

There are many benefits to be gained from a career in retail. Retail provides a variety of career paths to choose from and the chance to learn valuable skills. It’s a sector where you can start at

the bottom and work your way up to the top. With Omanisation as high as 60+ percent in the retail sector, retail jobs offer almost immediate accountability for talented Omanis so they can reach key management positions in a few years, as competition is very minimal.

What needs to be done to equip young Omanis to find a foothold in the retail job market?

With a 63 percent increase in prime retail space by 2020, which is projected to create more than 54,000 jobs, the opportunities for young Omani’s seeking their first job or a long-term career in retail are immense.

What are the retail trends to watch out for?

Technology will be one of the biggest drivers behind future trends in retail, particularly mobile technology. Shopping by mobile phone is still a new thing in Oman, but with technology advancements and with smart phone penetration rates on the rise, the trend to shop on the move using your mobile will increase. Retailers are already using social media to drive sales to their shops. The next step would be to drive sales through mobile commerce.

Virtual reality in retail is also a trend that will quickly develop in the next 5 to 10 years.

From the oasis of Bidiyah to the Arabian Sea…

Get set for a spectacular footrace across the desert, covering 165 kilometres along the highest dunes and the most remote and untouched sands

That’s the course the Oman Desert Marathon will follow, as 150 runners from 16 different countries partake in this unique adventure, from 17 to 25 November.

Arabian Sea. There is a night stage when the runners will be inspired by the silence, solitude and mysticism of the desert, illuminated only by the twinkling of millions of stars.

Described as the most uncompromising and merciless footrace on the planet, the marathon will cover 165kms, over six days, requiring each runner to be completely self-sufficient. The runners will embody the essence and essential part of a real ‘desert experience’.

Self Sufficiency

The six stages of the race will take the runners through miles of astonishing shapes and sizes of sand dunes, palm groves, hamlets and villages. They will pass seminomadic tribes who still follow the Silk Route through the Oman Desert, wildlife and stunning sunsets and finish the race with an explosion of emotion when they arrive at the shores of the

All runners are completely selfsufficient, requiring them to carry all of their own equipment, except for water, which is provided at checkpoints, at approximately every 10km intervals. Carrying all they need for five days is an enormous challenge, more so than running 165km, and this is fundamental to the experience of the authentic desert life.

Safety

The Oman Desert Marathon offers maximum safety and personal attention to all runners, by monitoring the runners and the race from vantage points that will not interfere with the sense of vastness and loneliness of the desert, but making sure that

nobody gets lost and that everybody can call or be spotted for help promptly. The race is organised by an Omani team, with the full support of the Government and the local communities, making the runners feel safe and welcome throughout this odyssey.

Course Design

The Oman Desert Marathon course is designed to embrace the desert experience. Six stages of 21kms, 25kms, 28kms, 29kms, 42kms and 20kms take the runners into the Oman Desert with a variety of landscapes and sand conditions, giving the runner a complete desert experience, including a night stage that will take the runners through the magic of the desert illuminated by the stars, from the desert to the beautiful beaches of the Arabian Sea. man is set to become an international kiteboarding destination, following the successful Kite Speed World Championship held in August on Masirah Island and the forthcoming prestigious Formula Kite World Championships in November.

A championship fleet of up to 105 male and female competitors are expected at the championship, which features the high-performance hydrofoiling Formula Kite boards. The class is the newest discipline in kiteboarding and the International Kiteboarding Association is campaigning for it to be included as an Olympic showcase event at Tokyo 2020 with full medal inclusion in the 2024 Games.

Earlier on, Oman was hailed as a ‘kiteboarding paradise’ by

competitors at the Kite Speed World Championship held at the Masirah Island. That event attracted some of the world’s best known kite boarders who gave the Masirah Beach Camp venue and ideal kiteboarding conditions in the flat and shallow lagoon, an unconditional vote of approval.

Following the event, Alex Caizergues, the winner and new Kite Speed World Champion, said, “The feeling of speed is amazing because here you have very flat water and no chop – we can go 100 percent without risking ourselves. I was ready and super motivated and this place just makes you want to go faster.” He set a new championship record of 48.5 knots, almost 90 kilometres an hour.

Organised and run by Oman Sail, the Masirah Island test event is now set to become an annual fixture in the kiteboarding calendar, catering to one of the fastest growing sports around the globe. The rapidly growing sport of kiteboarding has an estimated 1.5 million participants worldwide.

A championship fleet of 105 competitors will be a part of the Formula Kite World Championships in Oman, to be held from November 19 to 24

The forthcoming Formula Kite World Championships in November, to be held for the first time in the Sultanate, is expected to include some of the biggest names in the fast-growing sport. These are likely to include Germany’s Florian Gruber and French speedster Nico Parlier, who top the world Formula Kite rankings just behind Britain’s Olly Bridge. Meanwhile, Bridge’s mother Steph, a multiple kiteboarding world champion, leads the women’s rankings ahead of USA rider Daniela Moroz and Russia’s Elena Kalinina.

Oman has been the venue of choice for several international sailing events in recent years, including the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series and the Extreme Sailing Series, as well as the Laser, Laser Radial and RSX World Championships. All have been organised by Oman Sail, the national initiative to highlight the maritime heritage of Oman and promote the country through top level sports events.

ith Ghala Heights going on an overdrive to earn mileage in the capital turf as the next happening place to hang out, Centara Muscat Hotel Oman is beckoning, both residents as well as visitors seeking a slice of its plush 4-star facility. Standing tall and striking in the otherwise staid locality, the Hotel is set to endorse Ghala’s plans of fast becoming the next bustling destination, alongside several new eateries and shopping outlets springing up in the Baushar Wilayat.

Despite Ghala’s endless road intersections and bylanes, the Hotel, occupying a prime spot on way 5003, is easy to locate. It is a mere 15 minutes away from the airport and

is in close proximity to several of the landmarks in the area; it shines amidst the construction activity booming in the area.

We made our way to the Hotel with ease, despite the endless traffic on the Azaiba road. Parking was a breeze and we read that as a good omen for our tryst with Turkish fare.

As we made our way inside the Hotel, we patted the rumble in our tummies, assuring it of a scrumptious meal with some Turkish delights. And we were not disappointed.

Whirling dervishes occupy the picture frames on the walls and quaint Arabic lamps infuse the air with taste and panache. There is a distinct fine dining look about the restaurant, despite its casual mood. But the former doesn’t reflect on the pricing, and for foodies seeking to appease their palates with culinary masterpieces, this is a big lure. With the open grill dishing out delicious meat and seafood items and the oven, installed alongside, cooking up fresh bread, dining at Akdeniz could prove to be a sensorial experience.

As we sipped freshly squeezed lime juice, our host Alexis Tostain, Executive Assistant Manager and Food & Beverage Manager, pointed out that the Hotel would soon open the rooftop restaurant, in time with the new season, to give foodies in the capital an all new reason to frequent Centara. With Tiptara restaurant offering international fare, beginning with breakfast buffet to a la carte menu, the Hotel is well structured to cater to the diverse nationalities that make up the capital.

At Akdeniz, Executive Chef Kadrianta Sinulingga took us on a gastronomic tour of Turkey, beginning with an array of wholesome cold mezzeh. It was preceded by a basket of pita bread, accompanied by fresh vegetables and pickles, which, the chef tells us, is a complementary offering on every table. It is just what you need to work up an appetite for your grilled fare.

Our Middle Eastern mezzeh featured Hummus, Mutable and Tabbouleh, with vine leaves giving it a distinguishing flavour. We tucked our pita bread into the mezzeh ensemble, along with the popular Pide. For the uninitiated, Pide is a Turkish flatbread baked with toppings in a stone oven. At Akdeniz, the most popular Pide is the one with labneh and honey. It is divine! We tucked into two varieties of Pide; the other was topped with zatar, which made for a savoury starter.

The Pide is a meal by itself; but the chef was keen on cultivating our palates with popular Turkish cuisines to understand the country’s reputation in the global culinary horizon. The next item on our meal agenda was chicken shawarma, which is one item that every resident in the country will easily relate to. Tender chicken pieces, wrapped in the bread and presented along with fries is unlike the shawarmas we have tucked into at the shawarma joints in the capital.

For the mains, the chef put together a feast, no less. There was ‘Half Grilled Chicken’, which is marinated overnight with yoghurt, lemon and garlic, and ‘Mixed Seafood Platter’, comprising of squid, hamour, king fish and jumbo prawns. The grilled chicken is served on a bed of roasted vegetables and bread; it is perfect if you have a large appetite. Seafood lovers are better off with the platter packed with all the nice cuts and pieces.

And then there was the dessert…

As we have always maintained, we can never say no to any dessert. With chef picking on ‘Um Ali Crème Brule’, we went ahead and had a second helping! This dessert, created with puff pastry soaked in milk and flavoured with crème brule, is what magic would taste if it came in food form.

Method 1.

Chef Kadrianta Sinulingga

In a mixing bowl, add olive oil, white vinegar, cumin powder, coriander powder, paprika powder, chili powder, minced garlic and yoghurt and mix well.

2. Cut the beef into cubes about 1cm x 1cm, or bigger if preferred.

3. Add the beef into the marination and let it sit in the marination for minimum of two hours (overnight is better).

4. Cut all the vegetables in half. Cut half of them into cube size (same size as the beef) and leave the other half keep as it is.

5. Marinate the vegetables with salt, pepper, olive oil and chili powder.

6. Prepare the bamboo skewer and arrange the beef and the vegetables cube as per the picture.

7. Grill them in charcoal fire or any gas stove, along with the halved vegetables.

8. You could also cook it in a big flat surface pan, if you do not have a griller.

9. For dipping sauce, just mix all ingredients and set aside.

10. Serve as per the picture with fresh coriander leave or any style you preferr.

11. Enjoy delicious homemade beef kabab.

Sticky Chicken

Make easy lettuce cups, packed with chicken, for your family’s dinner or even as an appetiser for the party over the weekend.

1kg chicken breast, cut into strips ¼ cup cornstarch 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 tablespoon re soy sauce ¼ cup honey

Place chicken strips and cornstarch in a large re-sealable bag, close it and toss around to coat the pieces in cornstarch.

Heat oil in a large wok or skillet over high heat.

Add chicken pieces and allow it to brown on both sides.

Now add soy sauce and cook for a minute. Follow that by adding honey and sesame seeds.

Continue to cook by moving the pieces around until sauce is thickened and chicken is cooked through. This might take about 10 minutes.

Serve the chicken strips lettuce leaves, topped with desired toppings - shredded carrot, sliced cucumber and lime wedges.

Hawaiian Omelet

Eggs can be eaten any time and are, perhaps, the easiest ones to prepare in a variety of dishes.

2 eggs 1 tablespoon water 2 slices turkey bacon diced 1/4 cup pineapple mango salsa or diced pineapple 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Vegetable oil 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt Pinch of black pepper

In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, and add the water, salt and pepper. Whisk it all together until light and fluffy.

Heat a small saucepan over medium high heat until it›s hot, but not scorching. Spray it with non-stick vegetable spray on all sides and add the eggs.

Swirl the eggs around in the pan sto coat the bottom and go half way up the sides.

Continue until the eggs have mostly set and are not runny.

Sprinkle the bacon onto one half of the eggs and add the cheese over the bacon. Now top it with salsa or pineapple.

Using a reliable spatula, carefully fold the omelette over on itself and lightly press with the spatula. Continue to cook for 30 seconds or so, holding the top of the omelette in place.

Remove from heat and move the omelette onto a plate to serve.

Start journaling, stop worrying Anxious about an upcoming event or worried about some situation in your life? Start journaling your thoughts. For, studies have now found that expressive writing could help you get those fears out of your head and may even increase your chances of success.

Researchers studying the impact of journaling asked the experimental group in the study of chronically anxious female college students to write down their deepest thoughts and concerns before completing a computer task that measured their accuracy and reaction time. Although the controlled group also performed at about the same level for speed and accuracy, those who had written about the task used fewer brain resources. The key, however, is to write about the task and what is worrying you about it.

The Rapunzel Syndrome Following the death of a British teen, who is believed to have had an infected hairball in her digestive system, media attention is focused on a rare condition called ‘Rapunzel Syndrome’. An autopsy revealed that the teen had an infected hairball in her stomach, which became inflamed and caused an ulcer, leading to her death. Speculations in the media suggest that the teen suffered from a condition called ‘Rapunzel Syndrome’, in which a mass of hair forms in the stomach and part of it passes into the intestine. Only about 30 cases have come to light since it was first identified, but medical research has found that it is seen among teenage girls who have a condition called trichophagia, which is compulsive eating of one’s own hair. Treatment for hair-pulling and hair-eating usually involves behavioral therapies.

Salt increases diabetes risk

Too much salt in the food could increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and also latent autoimmune diabetes (LADA) in adults, say researchers. Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for up to 95 percent of all cases, is, often, diagnosed in middle-aged and senior people. LADA is a more slowly progressing disease, and does not require insulin treatment initially. The study looked at the impact of sodium intake on the risk of type 2 diabetes and LADA. While existing research had already demonstrated that sodium absorbed from the daily intake of salt may significantly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the current research found that this happens because sodium impacts insulin resistance and also that excess salt could lead to hypertension and weight gain.

Researchers found that each extra gram of sodium (or 2.5 grams of salt) per day was linked to a 43 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes; for LADA, each extra gram of sodium led to a 73 percent increase in developing the condition.

Schizophrenia increases death risk

A study,spanning over two decades,has found that people with schizophrenia not only have lower life expectancy, they are also three times more likely to die than people without it. Schizophrenia is a severe, long-term, disabling mental disorder that typically starts in late adolescence or early adulthood. The team of researchers examined records of more than 1.6 million deaths that occurred in Ontario in the 20-year period between 1993 and 2012. Their analysis showed that, over the 20-year period, ‘individuals with schizophrenia experienced three times greater mortality rates, compared with the general population, even after adjustment for sociodemographic factors. Those with schizophrenia also died younger and lost more potential years of life.’

Waistline check A new study has found that widening waistline, after menopause, may increase the risk of lung, gastrointestinal cancers, among women. Researchers followed nearly 5,900 postmenopausal women for up to 12 years and found that abdominal fat was a bigger factor than body weight when it came to the risk of lung and gastrointestinal cancers. This is more of a concern for older women who are prone to abdominal weight. On an average, the menopause transition is known to initiate a shift in body fat towards the central trunk area. Women should be aware of their lifestyle when they approach the pre-menopause age, advice researchers.

Pet store puppies could cause infections Medical experts have found a link between bacterial infections and puppies sold through a national pet store chain in the U.S. Campylobacter is a bacterium that causes people to develop diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever within two to five days of exposure to the organism. Most cases in humans occur from eating raw or undercooked chicken or eating foods that have been cross contaminated by infected poultry products. But people could also get infected from contact with the stool of an infected puppy, note studies. To prevent catching campylobacter from dogs, people are advised to wash hands thoroughly after touching dogs, their poop, or their food.

Diagnosing food allergy If you want to diagnose a food allergy, opt for an oral food challenge, suggest researchers, as they have been found to be safe, rarely resulting in a serious reaction. In an oral food challenge, patients are asked to eat a very small amount of a suspected allergen while under the close supervision of an allergist, who will evaluate the person for signs of an allergic reaction.

Researchers who analyzed more than 6,300 oral food challenges found these tests were safe and caused very few people to have a serious allergic reaction. Most of these tests involved children and teens younger than 18.

is an average 90 percent chance of encountering the creatures.

Be a Man! What does it mean to be a man?

Redefining masculinity Has the reference to masculinity changed over the years? Have men learnt to shrug off the demands of ‘toughness’ to adapt to the changing times where gender divide is continually broken?

hen boys are admonished with a ‘be a man’ order, the stress, generally, is on covering up the emotion or demonstrating the stereotypical masculine trait of being tough – emotionally and physically. Despite modernisation acting as a definition for equality, people are won’t to train little boys on the import of being manly to be successful in life.

A quick survey of the employment sector will reveal that men, even today,are hesitant to take up jobs that have been previously seen as feminine. Even those who take up the traditional secretarial jobs want to label it as ‘personal assistant’ to tone down the feminine facets of the job. They rarely consider careers which have been traditionally seen as feminine.

Although men have made entries in professions like teaching and nursing, the number is significantly less in comparison to women.

DIY Headboards

Give your bedroom a fresh new look with easy DIY headboard projects

Rustic Headboard

Creating a wooden headboard does require some carpentry skill, but it is not something that you need to get trained for. Simply get the main items from any of the local carpenters and do the final assembling at home. But if holding a hammer to a nail is definitely out of your league, give this idea to the carpenter and get your rustic wooden headboard to add that panache to your bedroom. Look for wood that has a rustic appeal or find out if the carpenter can give the wood the treatment you prefer. Ideally, you require boards that are straight but have cracks and knots that give it a natural flair; you also need to build two legs for the headboard. Once the boards are ready – cut depending on the size of your bed post – start attaching them on to the ‘legs’ of the headboard with nails or wood glue. Beginning at the top of the headboard, continue attaching the boards till you reach the required level.

Faux Cover

When budget does not permit a new bed, all that you need to do is give the headboard a simple slipcover to change the very look of your bedroom. The slipcover gives you the choice to select the design and colour to match the décor in the room. All that you need is sewing skill; but, again, you could overcome that with some assistance from your neighbourhood tailor. There are several online resources to find the DIY slipcover project that will meet your requirements and the style you have in mind. The idea is to give the headboard an all new look by covering it up like you would cover the pillows on your bed. You could even use glue to attach the seams together and adorn little ribbons or ties, depending on your fancy. To make it more special, add a monogram to the slipcover. Father-Son Relationship Has modernisation brought about a shift in the endearing father-son relationship?

es, times they are a changing. But is this change reflected in the relationships we share with different members of our family? Has modernisation injected its scientific discoveries and technological advancements on to our everyday relationships? What about the most endearing bond between fathers and sons…?

With the waning of the ‘disciplinarian father’ concept, which was a rule rather than an exception not so long ago, things have changed in the relationship quarters. Whether the signs are obvious or not, there is that underlying tug of love that is expressed without hesitation. In some ways, it has toned down the ‘respect your elders’ chant that was drilled into children born a few decades ago. There is, of course, respect, but it is a mutually shared one.

This may be a city trend than a universal one, but the fact that modern day father has broken the staid breadwinner stereotype had had a role to play in the change. The disciplinarian tag has also received a beating in the stressriddled world, giving the father a wider berth to perform his duties and responsibilities. With psychologists drawing a strong connection between children who show positive social and emotional development and fathers who are demonstrative in their affection, overtly or otherwise, the father-son bond has found newer connotations. But that is not to say that the modern day fathers are more loving than the fathers in the past, who sought respect and were disciplinarians. Today it is about bridging the generation gap, rather the emotional gap that existed when there was a mix of fear and respect for the father.

Academicians, who have studied the changing patterns of relationships, have found striking changes in the last couple of centuries. They maintain that each generation of fathers has passed on less power, less wisdom and even less love to their sons. It probably can be traced to the Industrial Revolution when fathers were out at work for most part of the day and even days at a stretch. It also altered

the perception of masculinity, as it shifted from domestic involvement to family provider. Father then was the status symbol of the family.

While some may opine that things have not changed much since, as fathers continue to take their role of providers over vigorously, at times, at the cost of family bonding and the much needed father-son relationship, there are several generations of sons who have thrived in a positive family ambience. The onus, of course, is on the fathers to take stock of the situation and build the bonds and ensure that their sons do not go through the ‘lost father’ syndrome, which is common among boys and men who have not enjoyed the protection or nurturing from their fathers. There is that yearning in them for a father who will make them feel that they are perfect to be considered as men.

Relatively SPEAKING Often, the father-son relationship can be complex, more so during the adolescent stage.

This is compounded further when feelings are not communicated with ease. While there is no single solution to help change this situation, there are little tasks and activities that could help build the relationship. l Begin by understanding the universal truth that sons are influenced by their fathers.

The old dictum ‘like father, like son’ reflects it perfectly. l Find ways to develop common interests.

When you do something together, anything that brings joy to both of you, you establish a platform for other things to share and do. l Make time to talk and listen what your son is saying. Show your interest in what he is saying by responding positively. l Throw ball or play some game in the backyard or in the neighbourhood park to assure your son that his fitness is important as is the bonding experience such play will provide. l Take up some DIY project with your son to boost his confidence in creating things on his own. l Dedicate time for a father-son talk. Make this a regular practice or save time during the weekends for that special bonding.

Deciphering Body Language Non verbal communication can be confusing if you are not alert to the subtle differences in the body languages of men and women

aking the clichéd ‘men are from Mars and women from Venus’ line of thinking forward, we present the obvious, and the subtle, cues and signs that establish the fact that body language of men and women differ on several counts. From handshake to the eye contact, the way men and women project non verbal cues differ. While some may have honed their perceptive skills to decipher the difference, majority are unaware that the body can actually speak in languages that are easily understood.

Here is a quick guide, culled from the internet, to help you get there: l Nodding is a universal non-verbal behaviour and it is easy to assume that nodding means the same, whether the person in question is a man or a woman. But no, there are differences and they lie in the reasons that trigger nodding. Men nod to show agreement, whereas women to express their attentiveness.

For women, nodding is a tool to demonstrate that they are listening and would like the speaker to continue.

Men who see such nodding might misunderstand it as a sign of agreement. l Women prefer to be approached by others from the front, while men deem front approach as aggressive; they prefer the side. Women, for some reason feel threatened if they are approached from the back or someone taps them on the shoulder to draw attention. l Interpreting touch is a difficult task, as some people love to be touched and show affection while others don’t. Besides, culturally too touching might have their restrictions/limitations. The difference lies in the way men and women use touch. For women it is a show of camaraderie, while for men it is a signal of power. The reference of touch is to the one that happens after the initial handshake. Men rely on touch to tap the back to show dominance; women to show support and build connection by touching arm or forearm. l Men rarely, if ever, demonstrate they are listening with any non-verbal cues; women do it by leaning forward, nodding and tilting their head to show they are listening. l There is a difference in the way men and women keep their arms - women keep it close to their bodies and men away from their bodies. l Women cross their legs when seated and men sit with their legs apart. Cross legged women demonstrate that they are comfortable with you, cross it towards you to indicate that she feels connected with you. Conversely, if the legs are crossed away from you, it could to show that she feels a little distant.
