50 new reasons to visit The Manhattan Fish Market Seafood lovers have a new reason
Drive de Cartier at Khimji’s Watches Elegance is redefined with Cartier’s latest men’s collection - Drive de Cartier introduced at SIHH 2016 in Geneva. The Drive de Cartier collection (available at Khimji’s Watches) has all the Cartier design codes: guilloché inner dial, railroad chapter ring, Roman numerals, highly defined proportions and an element of fine watchmaking mechanics. Its cushion-shaped case is the latest creation designed to reinvigorate the brand’s longstanding tradition of shaped watches. Aside from the elegant case shape, two outstanding features place the Drive de Cartier definitively in the category of elegant dress watches: the slim tapered profile that makes it look like an ultra-slim watch, even though it is a fairly standard 11.5 mm thick; and the pattern of the guilloché center, which is uniquely repeated on the outside of the chapter ring, adds elegance.

Make ROOM for
Brie Larson
Brie Larson, who won the 2016 Oscar in the Best Actress category for her role in Room, wants to connect with people “I want to start big because the thing I love about movie making is how many people it takes to make it,” said Brie Larson, after winning the prestigious award for her portrayal of Ma in the movie Room. Her rise to fame, which climaxed with the award, has been spectacular, despite a low public profile and a lack of instant recognition from audiences. Her career spans two decades with some very notable performances, but the 26-year old is not a face that jumps out of celebrity magazines or social media. Most people would hardly recognise her if she were to stroll past them; but that is fine by
Brie who has admitted that she was exceptionally shy as a child. ‘I was nervous to even talk to other kids in my class… I would hide in my room when my parents had people over,’ she recalls. Over the years, however, she has built up her career, which is inspiring, to say the least. Today, she is recognised as an acclaimed television actress, rising feature film star and emerging recording artist. A native of Sacramento, Brie started studying drama at the early age of 6; she was the youngest student ever to attend the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. She had starred in one of Disney Channel’s most watched original movies, ‘Right on Track’ (2003), as well as ‘Raising Dad’ (2001) and MGM’s teen comedy ‘Sleepover’ (2004), before graduating from middle school. Her film career includes the coming-ofage drama ‘Tanner Hall’, the dark comedy, ‘Just Peck’ and ‘Remember the Daze’. Brie garnered considerable acclaim for her regular role of ‘Kate’, in Showtime’s breakout drama ‘United States of Tara’. She also starred in ‘The Trouble with Bliss’, ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ and ‘Greenberg’. In addition to her talents as an actress, Brie has simultaneously nurtured an ever-growing musical career. At 13, she landed her first

record deal at Universal Records with Tommy Mottola; her first release in 2005 led to a nationwide tour. Talking about her role in Room, Brie, who grew up in California, where both her parents were chiropractors, said, ‘A lot of old memories resurfaced, things about my childhood that I had forgotten.’ She remembers moving from Sacramento to Los Angeles with her mom, when she was seven and her sister was about four; their parents had separated, and her mother was struggling to make ends meet. ‘We moved into a studio apartment, that was not much bigger than (the shed in) Room, with a bed that pulled down from the wall. I just had two pairs of jeans and a couple of shirts and a pair of shoes… But my Mum has this incredible imagination, and she instilled so much life into that space that I didn’t realise that we didn’t have anything.’ She is currently writing a feature film, which she plans to direct. But she is still acting, and has recently finished filming the action thriller ‘Free Fire’, a crime drama co-starring Armie Hammer and Cillian Murphy. Her motivations have never included amassing trophies, she insists, as she sums up her career thus: ‘As I have got older, I have realised that there isn’t anything inside of me that isn’t what somebody else feels too. And what excites me is to make things that connect with people.’
Carrie Fisher’s fitness regimen from Star Wars makers
Tyga hints at age gap for split from Kylie Jenner Tyga opened up about his split with Kylie Jenner, recently, hinting that their age gap may have played a part, while also admitting that he ‘will always love her’, despite their decision to go their separate ways. According to reports in the media, the pair split because 18-year-old Kylie could no longer handle his ‘lies’ and ‘struggled with trust issues’. When asked why the two were no longer together, Tyga, 25 said, “I think, you know, we are both just focused on our individual lives right now and sometimes things don’t work out...but I love her.”
Carrie Fisher has revealed how the makers of Star Wars sent a personal trainer to her house to weigh her in as she attempted to prepare for the latest film. Fisher, who became a household name for her role as Princess Leia, said she had been put through a rigorous schedule, which saw a trainer keep an eye on her figure and record her measurements to feed back to filmmakers. In a documentary about her and her mother Debbie Reynolds, screened at the Cannes Film Festival, she released footage of a personal trainer emptying her kitchen of unhealthy food and drink. He then puts her through her paces on a cross-trainer, before attempting to cajole the unwilling actress to do lunges.
Gigi Hadid to join Zayn Malik on UK tour Gigi Hadid is all set to put the brakes, albeit temporarily, on her career, as she takes four months off to move to the UK with Zayn Malik. She will accompany the ‘Pillow Talk’ hitmaker when he goes out on the road in support of his debut album ‘Mind of Mine’. According to a source close to the duo, Gigi wants to come and live in the UK to support him. However, the plan isn’t a hit with everyone, as Gigis friends and mother Yolanda Foster are concerned that she could do serious damage to her career if she takes such a lengthy break.
Louis Tomlinson joins hunt for missing teacher One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has joined the hunt for retired teacher Nigel Knights, who went missing during a trip to the supermarket, earlier this month. The singer tweeted his support for the search to 22 million fans. He wrote: ‘Really want to help this family get reunited with Nigel. It is hoped that the tweet will give a fresh boost to the search for missing Nigel.
Potential heir to Prince’s fortune?
A US lawyer has filed legal documents alleging there could be another heir to pop star Prince’s multimillion-dollar fortune. Michael Padden has presented evidence suggesting that a man thought to be Prince’s half-brother, Duane Nelson, had a son, who in turn had a daughter. Nelson and his son have died, but if the girl is confirmed as Prince’s grandniece, she would be entitled to a share of his estate.

W
hether charity is compulsory or obligatory, indulging in the beautiful act of giving is rewarding. As motivational speaker Hatim Harith Al Abdissalaam states, “Charity work is a form of goodness and any type of goodness would never be contradicting any true faith. After all, what good is this life if we don’t share the resources that were given to us in the first place by The Creator, to those who are less fortune…” In the following article, Hatim - ER Officer, SD Project Implementation at Oman LNG, an active member of The Islamic Information Centre Grand Mosque, lecturer at The Shariaa College, radio and television host and trainer at the Ministry of Health - talks about the importance of charity and the role this divine act plays in our lives. “As human beings living and coexisting on this planet, the onus is on us to prove our competence in taking the responsibility of being the custodians of Earth. This indeed is a huge burden on our shoulders; nevertheless, it’s a type of burden that develops a sense of satisfaction within our souls. There is no doubt that we all seek happiness in this life and the life to come in the hereafter: the attempt to enlighten our lives with joy has led us to explore different methods to achieve this goal.

cover STORY “Religion and modern sciences go hand in hand in their conclusion of what really brings joy and happiness to humans - whether they are sacred scriptures or modern research on happiness, the ultimate find is that serving humanity is the way to attain true happiness. “The religion of Islam is no different than other faiths in this conclusion, with the glorious Quran being the final revelation of Almighty Allah... The importance of giving what is dear to our hearts to those who are less fortunate is evident in many verses. Some of the Prophet’s (PBUH) traditions go to the extent of explaining that a believer is not a believer if he/she sleeps while the neighbour is hungry. The words of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is a clear indication of the great importance that Islam has put on the concept of giving. “In our daily practices of worship, we seek the pleasure of our creator and He, the supreme power in this universe, has allowed us to seek His pleasure through many means; charity is one of them. The religion of Islam teaches us that charity is a part of the belief and is to be practiced in any form or condition; it goes to the extent of stating that even those who are less fortunate can practice charity by expressing the minimum effort, such as a smile, towards others. This can only mean one thing - that no one has an excuse not to be charitable, in all circumstances. “The classical Islamic historians also show us some of the best examples of Muslims who were charitable - the settlers of Al Madinah, the companions of the Prophet (PBUH), who opened their homes and shared their entire wealth with their less fortunate brothers, who’d fled from Makkah, running away from prosecution. “The highest ranks of charity work is to be proactive and initiate the goodness towards those who are less fortunate, even before they ask for the support. This will save them the humility of asking. The other approach that would elevate us is to give them the best of what we have and not the things that we wouldn’t want for ourselves. “Islam is an entire system of life and only those who seek the greater happiness in this life of the hereafter would recognise what Islam would do to our weak souls.”

From Ramadan Rations to Eid clothes, Dar Al Atta’a is open to donors who want to make a difference in the lives of the needy during the holy month of Ramadan
H
aving improved the lives of over 170,000 families since its inception in 2002, Dar Al Atta’a continues to invest in the lives of the less privileged in the society. Its Islamic Values programme, which was launched to fulfil the objective of caring for the community, focuses on organising donations before and during various religious occasions. The programme works on the distribution of care packages that include food and festive clothes during Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha to underprivileged families. “This is in addition to our efforts to help to collect Zakat from individual donors and institutes and deliver the same to those in need,” points out Siham Yusuf Al Kharousi, Head of Administrative Affairs at Dar Al Atta’a. Highlighting the importance of giving charity and doing good to others, which has been emphasised on various occasions in the Holy Quran and the teachings of Prophet

Mohammed (PBUH), she says the focus is not on how big or small the amount is, as much as it is on the act of giving. To explain it further, she quotes the Prophet (PBUH), who said, “Do not disdain a good deed,” and also “Then shall anyone who has done an atom’s weight of good, see it.” The holy month of Ramadan promotes the spirit of giving and forgiving and Dar Al Atta’a has received generous donations during this season from a large number of donors, both individuals and companies. For the uninitiated, Dar Al Siham Yusuf Al Kharousi Atta’a Association is a nonprofit charity, catering to the poor and less fortunate in Oman through a host of outreach programmes like the Family Welfare Programme, Student Care Programme, Empowerment Programme, Disaster Relief Programme, Islamic Values and Let’s Read Programme.

Founded by Maryam Issa Al Zadjali, who is also the Chairperson, Dar Al Atta’a is managed by Vice Chairman Eman Al Wahaibi and board members - H. Nada Al Jamali, Samira Sultan, Lubna Al Kharusi, Shatha Abbas, Ekhlas Al Hashmi, and Eng. Abdullah Al Mazrooei. Since its inception, the Association has been delivering Ramadan Ration packages to the underprivileged families in a manner that boosts social tolerance and kindness. For the current Ramadan season, work has already been initiated to organise donations from companies as well as to network with Omani Women’s Association branches outside the capital to assess the number of families on their list. “We arrange a specific day when a group of volunteers will come on board to hand over the Ramandan Ration to families,” explains Siham, pointing out that the entire process is monitored and recorded. “We have a list containing the names of people who are going to benefit and they are required to sign on receipt of the Ramadan Ration,” she adds. The objective of the Ramadan campaign is to reach all parts of the country; to make this a feasible venture, attempts are made to reach newer areas every time. On a general scale, the areas covered include Muscat, North and South Sharqiya, entire Batinah region, Al Dhahira, Musandam and Buraimi.
Volunteers in action
Alongside Ramadan Ration, the Association also plays an active role in providing free Iftar meals in mosques. As Siham points out, “Providing free Iftar meals during Ramadan is one of the main programmes during the Holy Month.” For this year, the Association will provide Iftar at 13 mosques, wherein 1300 meals would be provided daily. And doors are open for sponsors who would like to contribute towards this initiative. With the onset of Qaranqasho, the focus will shift to children who are in the hospitals in the city. Hospitals like Khoula, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Al Nahda and Al Masarrah Hospital are contacted for a count of the beds occupied by children, who will receive gifts and sweets or cookies on the special day. Although Association volunteers undertake the task of distribution, there are times when employees of sponsoring companies help out to revel in the joy of putting smiles on the faces of children.

Making Eid Al-Fitr special is another facet of Dar Al Atta’a’s Ramadan initiative. Explaining about the same, Siham says, “During Eid celebrations, Muslims wear their best and look their best. And to spread the spirit of joy among the less fortunate families in our society, we provide Eid clothes - ‘Keswah’ - for the entire family, through our ‘Eid Clothes’ campaign.” As a part of this programme, 10 Rial coupons are handed to every kid registered in the family welfare programme, which they can redeem for clothes in the outlets.
Reach out to help
Interested members of the public can also be a part of this large venture, by donating cash or ration packages. Ready Ramadan packs can be brought straight to the Dar Al Atta’a office in Madinat Qaboos for distribution by volunteers, or, alternately, money could be transferred to the Association’s
account (Families Account, Bank Muscat, Account name and number, Dar Al Atta’a Association, 0315003966850024). The Ramadan ration, typically, includes basic items that are traditionally needed during Ramadan. “We do have a specific list when we put together the ration packs, but when donors are bringing ready packs, we have no issues, as they know traditionally what Omanis want, which are basic items like rice, lentils, oil and the like,” says Siham, pointing out that donors could also pay for these ready packs, which are priced at RO30 each. All that one needs to do is inform the Association accountant, or the admin, his/her intent to donate specific number of packages. However, there is no minimum limit on the amount one wants to donate for the Ramadan campaign. “It could be RO30 or even less, as our Eid Clothes initiative costs only RO10 for each child. Iftar meal costs only RO1.5 per person. You could even do that,” she notes.

Distribution of the ration packs begin around two weeks before the onset of Ramadan with the help of volunteers. Interestingly, sponsoring companies are known to involve their employees in the distribution, as a part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR). “Yes, there is an opportunity for CSR. The same applies to Iftar meals too. Company employees can go to the mosque and prepare for the Iftar by setting the places and even serve water and dates and also the main course,” she adds. For their part, the sponsoring companies will receive significant coverage in the print and social media, as well as the Dar Al Atta’a website and the annual book. “Each company donating RO5000 and above will receive a report about the amount they donated and how we spent it; how many families and people got benefitted from it…,” states Siham, adding, “The precious significance of Ramadan is giving and it comes from the heart. You feel it and touch those people who are less fortunate than you.”

Oman happened to them through a mutual friend of their partner, and things, as they say, fell in place to initiate the venture called ‘Dutch Master Floral Art’ at the Ultimate Planner Trading, which has been designed as a showroom to showcase floral design ideas and possibilities that people can use for special occasions. Following that initial meeting, they returned back on 31st December 2015 to finalise the project and get things going for Oman’s premium flower shop, located in the prime Qurum area.

With over 38 years of experience in the floral industry, six of it in Saudi Arabia, Narayano is set to infuse the flower market with his and Satyama’s brand of creativity, and continue their love affair with Oman, which has proven to be a novelty after their experience in Saudi Arabia. “The difference was so big that we said yes, we can settle here comfortably,” he muses. The idea now, he points out, is to just continue for as long as they are having fun. “Because I am doing what I love to do…creating beautiful things; that’s what it is all about,” he adds. Like their previous high class flower shop in Saudi Arabia, Ultimate Planner is also a visually gratifying place with creative show pieces of table decorations, and flower arrangements that are, primarily, aimed at the large local wedding market, alongside decorative pieces for parties and special occasions. Soon the top level of the shop will also be ready, providing the right ambience for clients to experience Narayano’s prowess in floral décor and discuss the requirements ‘over a cup of coffee’, as he points out. Interestingly, their special espresso machine can churn out a blend of coffees, including the Omani kahwa.
With plans of a long stint in Oman, connoisseurs of fine floral art are in for a sensorial treat. “There is so much that we have to offer with designs that I have in mind, and those that
are continuously evolving... Each arrangement, each design will be different, and that keeps it interesting - not only for the customer, but also for me. Sometimes, I make an arrangement and I have no idea where it is going and that is how the creation process goes; it is more about art than arranging flowers,” he notes, likening it to a painting project, which Satyama, an established painter and floral artist, acquiesces. Asked about their very unique names, they explain that they were inspired by an Indian guru, in whose commune, in Amsterdam, they first met, way back in the early 80s. Reflecting on the same, Satyama notes, “Names give some direction and we stayed with it…”

Narayano got initiated into the world of flowers early in his life, thanks to the presence of flower schools in Holland. He joined a flower school when he was 17, and, backed by training and experience, went on to become Dutch Master Florist. “You keep learning and gaining experience from other people and also from the things that you see. Presenting Team Mind Code, Team YOLO and Team WeOm - winners of Microsoft Imagine Cup Oman 2016 An app that can make epileptic children fit better in the society; a game that will help autistic children enjoy their learning experiences; and a project aimed at helping people network, share ideas and create potential business partnerships… These are the works of teams YOLO, WeOm and Mind Code, who, following their win in different categories, represented Oman at the Microsoft Imagine Cup Pan Arab Semi-Finals 2016, in Cairo (May 27 to 29). Here they share their projects with FACES.
Team YOLO
YOLO, an acronym for ‘You Only Live Once’, is a team of 11th graders, comprising Shamma Al Tobi, Shahad Al Amri and Al-Mutasim Al Amri from Um Alkhair and Omar Bin Alkhatab Basic Education Schools. “We chose YOLO as our team name because we are big believers that no matter how old you are or how difficult your life is, you can achieve and you can make your dreams true.

Everyone can make this one life chance-worthy and be the change,” is their mature explanation when asked about their name. They are the proud founders of ERMT app, the winning project in Imagine Cup, World Citizenship category, and the following is their take on their ambitious project. ERMT app or Epilepsy Remote Medicine Technology is a solution to make children with epilepsy fit better in the society and be productive. Epilepsy can have adverse effects on the child’s social and psychological well-being and its effects could range from social isolation and stigmatisation to disability. It could, also, adversely affect their educational prospects; learning disabilities are common in those with this condition, especially as children.
Centre STAGE
Epilepsy can affect either the left or the right side of the child’s brain, leading to various difficulties in learning and thinking, depending on the affected side. For example, if epilepsy is affecting the right side of the patient’s brain, it will affect creativity, imagination, music and art. But if it’s the left part, it will affect logical thinking, like numbers, words and analysing skills. Epilepsy causes something called ‘Visual and Sound Agnosia’ (agnosia is the inability to process sensory information), when it affects the right side of the brain. In this case, the child will not have the ability to recognise the objects by looking at it, but he/ she might use memory to define it. They also can hear all the sounds, but cannot recognise the source. So, we made a game with a special memory for objects and sounds to give children the ability to recognise things according to their memory. ERMT will provide users with different exercises and games focusing on their affected skills, as the app offers games, quizzes and exercises for both conditions. We have already made one game for each case; it’s an ongoing process, involving research and time to design and build the game. Our team believes that children with epilepsy are not disabled; they are differently abled.
Team WeOm
Their game idea, called ACG - Autism Curing Game – is designed to help children with autism learn and have fun at the same time. In addition, the game helps them with pronunciation and provides hints and clues on how to spell words, alongside activities to develop language skills. For example, ‘More over’, a set of cards with pictures, which comes with the game, appears on the screen as 3-D images when scanned. “As a doctor or teacher or even a child’s parent, you can create a profile for the patient and follow the evolution of his condition through its interaction with different levels in the game,” says the team mentor, Issa Hamood Al-Sumri.
Team Mind Code
The young Mind Code team from Hail Alawamer Public School won the Innovation category, for their project LightBulb. The Innovation category honours applications that give consumers inspiration and innovation at their fingertips with Microsoft tools and technology. Project LightBulb is a platform that aims to help people to network, share ideas and create potential business partnerships. LightBulb aims to be the platform that joins creative minds and companies and business owners with the aim to improve the World. The team, comprising Jawhara Hamood Nasser AlWardi and Sara Ahmed Salim AlHosni, believe that LightBulb can inspire people and create a better world to live in.
WeOm team from Sultan Qaboos University won in the Games category for creating the most engaging and entertaining game targeting teens and youth - built on Microsoft platforms. Their project, Gaming Suite for Autism Curing, is an interactive game that uses Augmented Reality to help children with Autism interact with the world. The team comprises of Aya Salam AlThuhlie, Abdulrahman Ali Al-Ghafri, Said Zahran Al- Harrasi and Mouza Khalifa Al-Sharyani, and their mentor, Issa Hamood Al-Sumri. Explaining about their game, the team said: “We wanted to use Technology to help children with Autism and give them a chance to a normal life alongside their peers; we came up with the Gaming Suite for Autism Curing.”

It is a one-point entertainment destination for all age groups, starting from 3 years to 60 years. The large FEC, which is open from 10am to 12am, seven days a week, is equipped to make everyday, more so weekends, extra special. This first-of-itskind entertainment space is home to more than 250 unique rides and games, 5-D cinema and a mega party hall. There are two parts to Funtazmo. in the age group of 0-3 years. It is an ideal place for children to have fun and stay engaged while the parents can relax and shop, assured that their kids are in a safe environment. The main Funtazmo is located on the second floor, with a double height space, giving the entire place a wow effect. The complete action can be viewed from two galleries across the centre – one located on the same floor and the other on the third floor, giving the person a bird’s eye view of all the fun happening inside.
The variety of rides on offer are exhaustive, presenting exciting avenues for visitors to spend hours and still not be done with playing. Age is only a number at Funtazmo, as there is something for everyone. For example, the Sugar Race, with a deceptive name, is one mean adventure family ride that rotates all around, in varying pace, till your head rolls. One of the rides, Reverse Time Ride, may not actually turn time around, but it could certainly reverse all your stress and worries. The ride will go

in rounds, on all sides, till you are transported into a different world altogether. If you have the heart for thrills, try Maverick; it is a family ride that can be enjoyed by 12 people together, at any given point of time. It rotates 360 degrees at varying pace, throwing your world upside down. The kids can try Gumdrop, a lesser version of this ride, or let their heart race in Drop & Twist where the ride twists and drops from 9 meters height. Kids can also attempt bowling at the Mini Bowling
area, designed for the young age group. It has 4 lanes to play and win strikes using special lightweight balls. The adventure at Funtazmo just gets better in late-2016, when the centre will host the first indoor roller coaster in Oman, along with a couple of other fascinating rides. To enjoy the rides at Funtazmo, all that you need to do is buy a gaming card at the customer service desk located at the entry to Funtazmo, which you can preload with however much money you choose. Games and ride prices start from 450 Baiza. There are some exciting promotional offers going on currently to add to the excitement.

Our rendezvous was at the equally spacious Sapphire restaurant, which is on the same level as the reception, providing a perfect vantage for visitors seeking to unwind or simply tuck into delicious meals. It was a hot May afternoon when we walked into this beautiful jewel, which is sans any overtly flashy designs or appendages that scream for attention. The quaintly designed floor and the sober hues of the furniture grow on you quickly, putting you at ease for a leisurely meal or even a quick business lunch. With friendly staff adding to the effect of the restaurant, you know you are in for a pampered treat from the word go. Our hostess Meenu Singh, Head of Sales and Executive Sous Chef Mumtaz Ali ensured that we had a well rounded meal, made all the more pleasant by a visit from the hospitable and jovial General Manager, Taj Eddin Sultan. The Dim Sums were accompanied by four different sauces – soy sauce, pickled ginger, hot chilli sauce (aka tikka lal sauce) and suimai. Stay
Hydrated Drink enough water and up your water intake with hydrating foods Heat and humidity have sounded the summer alert, urging you to alter your eating habits to stay healthy and cool all through the unforgiving months of summer. While water and healthy drinks are perfect for the weather, you would need food items that can add to your fluid intake and prevent all signs of dehydration. Remember, your body loses water by sweating, getting rid of waste and even breathing. And when you lose more fluid than you take in, you can get dehydrated. How much fluid you need every day depends on your age, sex and activity level. Hot and humid weather can increase your needs. To keep your body hydrated, aim for a fluid intake of about 3 litres (12 cups) every day, if you are a male who is over 18 years old; and 2.2 litres (9 cups) if you are a female over 18 years of age. Fluids include water and other beverages such as milk, juice, broth or soups, coffee and tea. Fluid not only helps you stay healthy and hydrated, it also keeps you energised. It controls your body temperature, aids digestion, carries nutrients around your body, cushions organs and joints, gets rid of waste and keeps your bowels regular.
Signs and symptoms of mild hydration:
z Excessive thirst z Dry lips and mouth z Flushed skin z Tiredness z Irritability For additional fluids, include the following foods in your summer diet plan. Research has shown that eating foods that have high water content will keep you satisfied with fewer calories.
Cucumber
Cucumber is your best bet for the season. With 95 percent water content, a cup of cucumber slices is nearly as thirst quenching as a glass of water. Cucumbers also provide a little fibre and some vitamin C.
Strawberries
Of all the berries in the berry kingdom, strawberries deliver the most vitamin C and also provide folate, a B vitamin that is essential for the healthy growth of new cells. They contain 91 percent water, thus contributing significantly towards your overall fluid intake.
Watermelon

Summer Skin Care Give your skin the tender loving care it requires this summer, with tips and guidelines from Dr. Dhwani Shah, Specialist – Dermatologist, Aster, Al Raffah Hospital
S
ummer brings with it intense heat with UV radiation (both A and B), which is potentially dangerous to the skin, causing skin rashes, photodermatitis and sun burns; over a long period of time and with prolonged exposure, it could result in photoaging and, ultimately, skin cancer. Common skin problems in Oman Prickly heat (heat rash) is very common, but there are other infections that aggravate during summer, like fungal and bacterial infections (folliculitis). Tight clothing, together with humid atmosphere, can cause aggravation of all these infections, leading to folliculitis - pimple-like eruptions over the skin. Fungal infection, known as Tinea, mostly affects the groin, underarms and the infra mammary region (although it can affect any part of the body), which are the moist folds of the body. Tinea versicolor, another fungal infection, which affects the chest and the back, will result in black/white patches all over. Besides, dermatitis, which is caused by dry skin, can also aggravate infection. Preventive measures z Take cool showers z Hydrate yourself; drink around14 glasses of water a day z Minimise sun exposure between 10 to 4 pm z Use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF more than 30 and UVA protection; reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours
Measures against infections z Stay in a well ventilated, air-conditioned room z Change clothes after workout or if sweating profusely z Avoid wearing tight garments; preferably wear cotton fabric and loose clothing (cotton absorbs sweat and doesn’t allow fungus and the bacteria to grow, while fabrics like spandex and nylon increases fungal infection) z Saffron is the ideal colour for sun protection - black absorbs highest radiation and white is only cooling z Wear clothes that are tight knit z Use dusting powders around the groin area, as it helps in absorbing excess moisture and prevents overgrowth of bacteria and fungus
Dr. Dhwani Shah
Sun Protection Factor
SPF is the measure of UVB radiation, and that means you need a specific protection for UVA as well. Your sunscreen should contain both, UVB protection, which is SPF, as well as UVA protection. The Sun Protection Factor mentioned on the cream is the protection time in the sun. For example, if you go without sunscreen, you could get a sunburn in 5 minutes; but if you are using SPF30, then you are 30 times protected from sunburn. Apply sunscreen on all exposed parts of the body - not just the face; even the legs if they are exposed, 20 minutes before going out. This helps in the prevention of sun related dermatitis, photoaging and skin cancer.
Signs of infection The first sign is itching, along with a skin rash, which might vary from red to black colour. If you see any of these signs, it is time to consult a dermatologist, as it requires proper treatment. In case of folliculitis, you will see red papules with/without pus points over the body, which is a sign of bacterial infection and requires treatment. Use calamine lotion for prickly heat. But if you do not get any response in 5 to 7 days, see a doctor

The 7.5km-long spectacular new trek has been marked with the national trail colours of red, white and yellow. It starts at the small village of Mahabis, passing the abandoned village of Al Khutaymi before dropping steeply by nearly 600m to the beautiful plantations of Masirat Ash Shuraqiyn. Here, deep in the wadi, trekkers can enjoy a refreshing swim before the uphill hike back. This is a full day walk of 5 to 6 hours for most groups and deserves to be enjoyed and explored at a slow pace.
According to Julian Ayers, Alila Hotels & Resorts Regional Vice President and Alila Jabal Akhdar General Manager, the new trekking path adds to the stunning beauty of the Jabal Akhdar region. “We look forward to enhancing our Alila Experiences by adding more guided tours for our guests in the future,” he stated.
Development of the trekking path was led by Steve Jones, Development Advisor from Omran, Ali Al Abri, the Leisure Concierge from Alila Jabal Akhdar, and local community members. The path’s development closely follows Steve and Ali’s exploration of the recently publicised cave on Jabal Al Akhdar and it is hoped that the cave can be opened to tourists in the future as well. “We are so thrilled to have found this new trekking route for

New Discovered
‘A cave is a highly vulnerable environment’, say geologists who explored new caves in Jabal Akdhar and are concerned about their protection
A
group of geologists, based in Oman and Germany, recently discovered two new caves in the Jabal Akdhar mountain range, with the help of villagers. The caves are around 40 meters below the ground. The team, led by Dr. Mohammed bin Hilal Al Kindi, former President of the Geology Society of Oman, discovered a geologically significant cave near Aqbat Al Bayout in Al Rowais in the Niyabat of Al Jabal Al Akhdar in the Governorate of A’Dakhiliyah. However, entrance to the new cave, named ‘Khislat Hayl al Diyar’, has been closed in accordance with government officials to protect its pristine and beautiful formations. Matthias López Correa, German geoscientist and lecturer at the Department of Applied Geosciences at GUtech, who was part of the team, is concerned about the protection of this fragile environment. “It is one of many caves to be discovered in the area. However, despite the beauty of the cave, it is very important to mention that a cave is a highly
Matthias López Correa
vulnerable environment that needs to be protected,” he said, in an interview, following the discovery; adding that only experts who have the right equipment should access the cave and not the general public. The delicate dripstones and crystals inside the caves have been formed over 1,000 to 10,000 years and hence need to be protected from too many visitors. He believes that public awareness and geological education is important to ensure that it is not destroyed. Caves are fascinating features that host important archives about our climate and can help understand past climate change, he maintains. “They
explain a lot about the history of the landscape and the uplifting of mountains,” he said. The dripstones were formed by rainwater from rainfall on the plateau, which disappeared through faults and cracks inside the stones and dissolved the limestone on the way. This dissolved calcium carbonate formed beautiful crystals or other formations. Usually, small insects and other animals like bats nest inside caves as well. Matthias López Correa has been involved in cave research since his childhood in the South of Germany. Later on, during his studies at university and over the years he has been involved in international cave research including the survey of the Ghar Alisadr in Iran, a 13 km long cave.

May 2016
Sunscreen: You do not need to be apprised of the virtues of sunscreen while stepping out of your home, more so during the peak summer months. Choose the right sunscreen and remember that the SPF number is indicative of the theoretical amount of time you could stay in the sun. And that means a higher SPF if you are outdoors for long. Ideally, reapply sunscreen as often as you need and remember that its role is to provide protection from sun and not reverse damage done. Opt for a sunscreen that contains agents which block both UVA and UVB rays. Moisturise:
There is nothing that will compensate a strong moisturising routine for your skin. While winter demands on moisturiser were more, summertime requires applying moisturisers that can work on wet skin. Look out for post-shower moisturisers, which are smooth and do not leave any residue on your skin. Do not forget your elbows, feet and ankles, which can get very dry. Buy aloe vera containing products, which are known for their anti-inflammatory elements. Apply it before you retire for the day, as it will calm and soothe your skin, taking away the scaly dryness that comes with summer.
LIFESTYLE MANTRA
SOCIAL IMPACT GIFTS By Sophia Raman WHAT BETTER TIME THAN NOW TO DO CHARITY AND EXPERIENCE THE JOYS OF GIVING
Makeup:
Like clothes, your makeup also needs a seasonal change. Whether it’s your foundation or the concealer, the winter colours may just not suit the rising temperature. Ideally, opt for a tinted moisturiser; pick one that is a shade darker than what you would wear in winter. As always, remember to match the foundation shade to the skin on your face and not any other part of the body. A primer also is the need of the hour to create a shield and prevent foundation from mingling with your skin’s natural oils. Also, change the powder eye shadow with a creamy one to keep it intact even when your face breaks out in sweat. Waterproof mascara is also in order for the season.

s you get set for the season of abstinence and fasting, explore the options of gifts that have charity labeled on them. For it is the season of giving, not just to friends and family, but also to people in need. This time around, imbue the essence of the holy month by picking gifts that have been designed with the intent to encourage charity. Make it a double bonanza of sorts by picking a gift that is pegged to some charitable organisation or the other. The objective should be to create social impact with the smallest act of giving during this Holy Month. A quick online check will open up the floodgates of options for gifts that give back to causes and communities around the globe. Call it social impact or socially responsible gifts, you could find a cache of items in the local market too; whether it is handicraft or decorative items, choices of gift items, created by members of local NGOs and adhoc groups, are aplenty. On a global level, ‘Pinterest’ could prove to be a great source of ideas to get you going on your charity mission. You could, alternately, check out the options of buying a charity gift catalogue. Many global charities that are involved in poverty development, offer gift catalogues that are linked to providing basic necessities to underprivileged children or families.

ESQUE IT WITH ALE
THE 2016 MET GALA WAS THE FUTURE! FASHION IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGY WAS THIS YEAR’S THEME AND WHILE MANY CELEBS TOOK IT LITERALLY, ALE AL ZADJALI WONDERS IF THE FUTURE OF FASHION IS REALLY IN THE HANDS OF TECHNOLOGY What I loved about this year’s MET gala was that while the celebrities wore talk-worthy looks, majority of the looks were nothing like the usual MET; it wasn’t about classic, it was about the future and classic redefined. Lupita Nyong’o is my choice as the hair winner. She brought a style that was relatively new to the red carpet, but was actually a nod to African women, including the legendary Nina Simone. Let’s talk about the looks… Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Zayn Malik were celebrities who took the theme choice a tad too literally, and each one styled their own interpretation in Silver (which is the colour you think of when someone says technology.) However, the real MVP of the night was Claire Danes; her Zac Posen gown was a vision of beauty on the carpet, but it was even more impressive when she stepped inside the gala and it lit up in LED lights. Emma Watson comes in second place with her Calvin Klein gown made entirely of recycled plastic bottles. The future of fashion (in technology) is exciting, but let’s hope it is more creative than attaching a robotic arm to a suit jacket and wearing CD’s on your arms.
Ale Al Zadjali is a 22 year-old award-winning fashion designer; he is the brain behind the ‘Esque By Ale’ line of clothing

It’s
Father’s Day
Mark June 19 on your calendars and join in the celebrations to recognise the contributions of fathers and father figures in our lives
I
n most homes, the family scale is, typically, tipped in favour of mothers. She is the recipient of bonus hugs and ‘I-loveyou’s on a daily basis. But what about fathers…? Don’t they like an occasional hug or two? Don’t they want to revel in the demonstrations of love and gratitude for the roles they play in their homes?
The answer to that may be dependent on your interpretation of your father’s character, but this Father’s Day (June 19), you could make a change and give your answer a reality check. Surprise that special man in your life with a gift that spells your love or shows that you care enough to know just what gift he wants. Whether the recipient of your gift is your father, grandfather, uncle or the father figure, there is no better way than a handmade card or a special gift, to say ‘thank you’ for their presence in your life. If you are a complete novice on the gift front, especially when it comes to your father, this little guide of gift ideas may help you get started.
Trendy gifts
For fathers who love to stay true to style and fashion, nothing could beat the chance of owning a trendy pair of sunglasses. Use your resources to find out his choice and, with time at hand, even explore the digital market to pick the one that would make his day all the more special. Trendy dads could also do with an exclusive perfume or even a deodorant. And when nothing else works or if you are pressed for time, buy a trendy shirt or a pair of trousers. Pad it up with accessories like belt, or make a gift pack of wallet or a handy bag with shaving kit and all the props. Surprise him by including face care items like face wash and moisturiser.

man DATE Sporty ideas
If he is the sporty kind, your search for a gift that would make him happy could be easily narrowed down. You could buy golf, cricket or tennis set, or simply pick up a membership to the local golf club. And if he is the indoor sort, go in for a chessboard or a scrabble pack. A health club membership would be in order if he is a fitness freak and loves to pick weights. On another note, check out the digital options to stay in shape; wearable monitors could be your best bet. You could also explore the timeless charm of fishing by buying him a fishing kit.
Tech picks
Techno savvy dads would love any item that has latest labelled on it. With the local market inundated with products from top international brands, your gift pick could be a breeze. Depending on your budget, you could opt for a new mobile set or an electronic shaver. But if he is ‘Mr Fixer’ of your house, you would do him a world of good with a tool kit. Most dads can’t resist tinkering in the garage or the backyard…
Book love
For the bibliophile dad, a book is the perfect gift, whatever be the occasion. The lways wanted difficulty may lie in picking the one that he has not read or has always to read. If you are observant, you could find out the kind of books ks he loves to read; if not, opt for a book that celebrates the relationship between en a father and child.
Treats…
When in doubt, vote for food. Whether your dad is a foodie or not, ot, he will not resist the chance of dining out in one of the plush new restaurants in town. Make him experiment newer cuisines. And, if you have the money to support your choice of gift, book him a weekend stay in a hotel to cool off the summer heat and unwind at a spa. Alternately, you could simply gift him movie tickets or buy DVDs of his favourite movies. Make this a memorable Father’s Day…

Brain-scanning helmet detects concussions
Any traumatic brain injury requires immediate medical attention, and to make it possible, Smartbrain, the Norwegian startup, has developed EmerEEG helmets, which can conduct on-location EEGs. The EmerEEG has electrodes inside it, which are attached to a flexible membrane. When placed on the patient’s head in an ambulance, that membrane is gently inflated, to ensure that all the electrodes make contact. The gel is automatically dispensed to each one. Within about a minute of being put on the patient, the helmet can begin taking readings. Work is now on to refine and commercialise the technology.
Thought-reading headset
Go on, speak your mind… By combining a wireless connected EEG headset from Emotiv and an assistive communication app, California-based Smartstones is bringing the power of speech to those who have difficulty communicating verbally. The ‘think to speak’ technology works by reading the brainwaves of the user and expressing them as phrases spoken through the app. The app, ‘:prose’, helps nonverbal people communicate by tapping or swiping on a mobile device. Like sign language, individual gestures and movements are linked to words and phrases. The commands are customisable, which means the user can assign phrases to specific movements however they like.

You are enjoying all the physical delights. Family support also is right. Do whatever you have to do, but shift more focus to family and a balanced emotional life. The idea now is to find and function from your point of expressive harmony.
Aries
There is more to love than just physical chemistry and you are finding that out now. Mental intimacy is extremely important than love; for love is about communication and sharing ideas. You have spent many months developing your social skills, now is the time to develop your personal skills - your personal initiative and independence. Now, and for the next few months, create conditions as you want them. Career demands will carry you outside your normal sphere. The month is more about friendship than romance.

Emotional harmony, family and home concerns are always very important to you, but so is career. The month ahead is practical and down to earth. People in general are not that interested in ideas or emotions – it’s about the everyday affairs of life. This is a very good financial period. Capricorn
Love has been basically stable and not a priority. Financially, things are good until the 21st. There are more obstacles to deal with as you work harder for earnings than usual. The good news is that the spouse, partner or current love is prospering; he or she is having financial windfalls and is likely to be more generous to you.
Aquarius
Emotional intimacy is still important, but love is about service to the beloved. Finances are challenging until the 20th. Finances improve after the 21st, but earnings come with more delays and glitches. Handle the needs of the hour, but avoid major purchases or financial decisions. It is also a good period to initiate health regimes and diets.
Pisces
The tension between home and career will have some therapeutic value this month. It will force up old memories and old patterns that need cleansing. Issues involving parents will also come up. You will be given the opportunity to resolve these things. Health still needs watching as you get too vulnerable to all kinds of germs and bugs.

WEIRD NEWS Raccoon causes power outage
A Raccoon’s power station caper cut electricity to 40,000 Seattle homes, recently. The raccoon broke into a substation in Seattle, Washington, and brought down the electric grid in a dozen suburbs. It caused 13 separate system outages during its brief visit. Selfie fells 126-year-old statue
It was a simple quest to take a selfie with the statue of a 16th century Portuguese king, but it all went wrong when the 126-year-old statue crashed to the ground and shattered. The young man accidentally toppled Dom Sebastiao’s statue after climbing up to its pedestal, outside the ornate Rossio railway station in central Lisbon. The child-sized statue of the sword-wielding king stood in a niche between two horseshoe-shaped arches at the entrance to the station. The youth’s attempt to flee the scene was thwarted as police caught up him.
Real life ‘Fox and Hound’
In a scene reminiscent of the Disney movie ‘Fox and Hound’, an unlikely friendship has developed between a dog and a fox. The two - Juniper and Moose - are now completely inseparable and are known to spend their entire day together, just like the fairy tale. According to the owner, Juniper, the fox, even acts like ‘a little girl with a crush’ when she is around Moose. Juniper, a North American Red fox, was just five weeks old when her owners bought her. They raised her along with dogs, which, possibly, made Juniper believe that she is also one. But Moose, the hound, is aware she is not a dog due to the different body language, say owners.
Widower wins $1m lottery for second time
Bruce Magistro, a construction worker who won $1m on a lottery scratchcard in 2012, has beaten the odds by hitting a $1m jackpot again. After his first win four years ago, the 48-year-old used much of his prize money to pay for his wife Yvonne’s medical bills. Yvonne died from lung cancer in 2014, after a three-year battle against the disease. Son Nick Mayers said the second win was his mother’s way of sending help back to the family. According to gaming officials Magistro beat odds of 1 in 7,745,600 to win this lottery.
Charity A brief history of charitable giving… Statistics has it that Australia is the most generous country on earth, with more than two-thirds of Australians donating money and helping a stranger, while more than a third volunteering in a month. Globally, in a typical month, around 1.9 billion people help a stranger, 1.3 billion donate money and .8 billion volunteer, demonstrating, clearly, that charity is a strong institution in the world. Interestingly, charity has been around since the beginning of time. In fact, the first reference to charity can be traced back to 500 BCE when the world ‘philanthropy’ first appeared in the drama ‘Prometheus Bound’ by Aeschylus (phil=love, anthro=man).
In 387 BCE, Plato’s Academy, a group working for the public good on a voluntary basis, was established. In 28 BCE, the first Roman emperor, Augustus, gave public aid to an estimated 200,000 people. In 1643, the first American fundraising drive is organised by Harvard University; it raises 500 pounds. In 1727, the Sisters of Charity provide social assistance to the needy in Latin America. In 1914: The World’s first community foundation is established in Cleveland, Ohio – The Cleveland Foundation.
