Pivot+euro rsCg Pivot, Chicago’s first eco-friendly boutique, recently teamed up with Euro RSCG ad agency to craft a fresh campaign spreading the boutique’s motto of organic fashion.

Jessa Brinkmeyer, owner of Pivot, unfortunately will be closing its doors this October. Luckily for us, the online store will continue to thrive and provide us with the latest in natural fashion. Instead of focusing solely on running a store front, Brinkmeyer would like to focus her energy on spreading the eco-friendly clothing movement while still being able to distribute the clothes to her followers. Bold colors and meaningful messages in her latest ads such as “good karma is in” reinforce Pivot’s ideas. The entire campaign titled “make a fashion statement” will continue to promote not only eco-friendly fashion in the greater Chicago area but also continue to push Pivot’s online store.

Blake standard Pops Up Blake Standard announced that the contemporary women’s boutique will open a pop-up store at Oakbrook Center Mall. The design of the store was inspired by the love of art, world travel, beautiful places and people with good energy, much like what inspires the brand itself. Pierre Colorado, the brand’s owner/creative director, said the Blake Standard store isn’t your typical pop-up store.

“I wanted to make sure it is brand positive and sends a message to our customers. We have always approached the brand as a lifestyle concept and this gives us the chance to present the full experience,’’ he said. Meet the designers Tell us about your spring 2010 collection!

My spring 2010 collection is a mixture of candy coated ruffles in crinkle chiffon and girlish bows from shing shantung. It’s a confident look with an adolescent edge... kind of like trading gumdrops for jawbreakers. Easy pieces and flirtatious silhouettes usher in an adorable and feisty concoction that is sure to break hearts.

It’s called Le Jardin de L’Amour, which is the garden of love in French. It’s about finding the ease of love in such a beautiful natural setting, the garden. This is where things are so easy for one or for all.

Emoting the feeling of beauty, innocence, romance, and love. And it’s all done in the eyes of the one you truly love.

Without being too literal, an idea I kept in mind when designing each piece in the collection was how to have little luxuries in a down economy. I was inspired by fashion from historical eras where we went through a recession or depression. It is a neutral color palate with a subtle print or pop of color here and there and I designed more day dresses and separates than in previous collections.

The result is classic, wearable, multi-functional pieces with a focus on special details such as intricate pleats, hand topstitching, or ruffles.

Our spring 2010 line is inspired by the ease and fit of men’s casual wear. The marriage of menswear inspired details, such as pocket squares, and feminine silhouettes creates a line that is high quality, yet still affordable. These styles can be described as “go-to-pieces,” similar to a woman’s favorite t-shirt or pair of jeans. Any piece from the line can easily transition from edgy, to work, to relaxed weekend-chic.

Inspired by the Chicago streetwear scene, literary philosophy, and Joseph Kosuth’s work in the Modern Wing of the Art Institute, the spring/ summer line is about womans’ self definitions. By wearing the definition of their chosen word, the woman expresses who she wants to be in the world while viewers can hold her accountable for living into that word. Fun, flirtatious, and colorful, the designs include screenprinted text and my signature color-blocking with a young contemporary style to create an edgy and ultra-wearable spring collection.

The ready-to-wear collections will revolve around the elements of tribes from different worlds. The Arlo menswear collection is inspired from outer space with futuristic fabrics, galactic colors and details. As for the womenswear collection, it reflects a modern Amazon tribe with textures, vibrant colors and modern elements.

ULTA on State Street David Barnett, the creative director at The Salon at ULTA on State Street in Chicago, received a huge honor when he was named the only U.S. finalist in the Davines World Style Contest.

Our local celebrity was selected out of 80 U.S. contestants and hundreds of other competitors worldwide.

Fabiola Arias’ webpage speaks wonders for the kind of style and woman she really is. “For she who lives in her own reality. Who believes dressing is the ultimate expression of the inner self. Who doesn’t believe in style but decorates herself as a visually composed collage of artistic beauty. By looking strong and assertive she transforms into anything she wishes to be,” states the introduction on her site. The Cuban native expresses her artistic side in more than just fashion design. Fabiola is also a painter and a sculptor.

As a graduate of Parsons School of Design, Fabiola takes great attention to high craftsmanship, surface treatment and details. Her talents have allowed her to sell her first collection to Chicago’s Ikram Goldman while she was still finishing school. Her most recent collection is full of pristine craftsmanship of extremely delicate and detailed garments.

FACTIO MAGAZINE: How does it feel to be selected by Ikram Goldman personally?

FABIOLA ARIAS: I feel honored to have my garments selected by Ikram. I was not aware of her connection with the First Lady until after she came to see my collection, so I felt shocked and surprised when I found out. I was really grateful because it was my first collection and I was in my last year at Parsons, and something like this was not supposed to happen.

FM: For your fall ‘09 collection, how did you come to the color palette jungle green?

FA: It’s a color I had tested in 2007, for a collection that I presented at the Marriot Marquis in New York. I found that color so exotic, full of mystery and it was really well received. It isn’t a color that people wear often, but I think it looks amazing on the skin. When designing my fall ‘09 collection, I just kept seeing the deep jungle green in my head. I don’t really plan my design process, it just kind of flows out of me and onto paper. It’s like being in a certain moment when all of these ideas are stirring up in your head, and there’s nothing forced about it, inspiration just happens by itself.

FM: What music do you listen to when designing?

FA: I have a very diverse soundtrack but most of the time I like to listen to high energy music. When I feel super energized and motivated, I listen to Madonna.

Songs like “Express Yourself,” and her last album Hard Candy, as well as Michael Jackson puts me in a very good mood. Beyonce, Rihanna, Britney, all those girls. But then sometimes I’ll feel like listening to Coldplay, old jazz, or ambient music if I want to feel more relaxed.

FM: What’s your own signature style in dressing?

FA: I live in New York and I feel most comfortable and elegant in black or grey. Most of my days are spent running around the Garment district, picking up fabric, going to factories, etc, so I have to feel comfortable.

I wear black ballerina flats, black skinny jeans and a classic blouse. However, at night if I attend a formal event, I love nothing more than to dress in something of my own design with a lot of texture and color so that I stand out.

Christian Audigier The genius behind Ed Hardy’s recent success royally presents his new fragrances, entitled Christian Audigier for Women and Men, inspired by Audigier’s marriage with his wife Ira. When designing the line both spouses picked scents that best represented the other - coconut and wild berries for her and dark rum and leather for him.

She’s absolutely stunning with perfect olive skin, crystal blue eyes and flowing brown hair, yet “Desperate Housewives” newest star, Maiara Walsh, claims to be a huge nerd. We chatted with her on a summery Thursday afternoon about celebrity crushes, beauty routines and yes, even twitter. The 21-year-old was so sweet and down-to-earth, we had a hard time remembering she was gearing up for the newest season of one of TV’s hottest shows. Between her charming laugh and a few attempts to turn the question on us when she could not find the right answer, Maiara let us in her life, career, and what’s next.

How does your character on 90210 inspire you?

Personality-wise, she doesn’t obviously!

Fashion-wise, she dresses very high fashion and I’d like to think of my style a little more edgy. I couldn’t even afford her clothing if I wanted to! I love crazy colors like she does, but I would dress it down with a more simple piece in the mix.

How did you get started in acting?

I have been acting in plays since 1st grade, but it really started when I was about 13 or 14. I hired my first commercial agent and booked my first commercial and thought, “Oh, this is easy!”, but then eight months go by and you haven’t booked anything and you realize it’s not as easy as I thought it was.

Your role on Desperate Housewives is so different than your roles on previous projects, like “Unfabulous” and “Cory in the House”. What type of role comes easiest to you? Which do you enjoy the most?

I feel like I can find a piece of myself in pretty much any character. It’s very easy for me to play an innocent character because that’s more of who I am, but I love playing roles that are different than me because it makes it more interesting to me as an actor. You have to figure out why a character acts the way they do. A character is not just a mean person to be a mean person- what happened in their childhood that led them up to this point? So I actually prefer playing roles of people with issues.

What was your reaction when learning about being a part of one of televisions biggest shows?

It was very surreal. It was weird because everything happened so fast. I had just booked another sitcom and on my last audition I basically had to tell them, “You have one hour to decide whether or not you want to use me because otherwise I need to tell these other people.” So then Desperate Housewives booked me and I had to choose between two things. I hadn’t done anything in a while, so it was crazy.

It’s a good situation to be in, but when it rains, it pours.

At the season finale, your Desperate Housewives character, Ana, was introduced as quite the little troublemaker. With the highly anticipated sixth season approaching, what can you tell us about the future of the show?

Well, Ana will definitely continue to test Gabby’s patience, and her state of staying with Gabby and Carlos is sort of hanging in the air. In the season premiere there is a really funny scene with Gabby at a nightclub. Oh, and of course, we will find out who the bride is. Drea Matteo is also joining the cast, so that’s exciting. There will be all sorts of new people coming in, full of secrets.

Describe your fashion style- who or what are you inspired by?

Well, I definitely dress with my mood. I don’t even know how to describe my style- if you call it that! If I’m going to events, I like a classier look. If I’m just hanging out, I like bright colors and fun tie-dye. I like to mix things up.

Any celebrity crushes?

I hate stating the obvious, but I’m a big Johnny Depp fan. The guy has just got it going on. I love Ryan Gosling. I don’t know. It’s hard. I watch movies and I’m like, “dang, he’s a good looking fella.”

Describe your personal style.

My personal style varies from day to day.

I never used to have a good sense of fashion!

I always dressed in t-shirts and my hair was constantly in a fuzzy ponytail. When I became more in the public eye, my sisters took me to the side and told me that I have to dress more fashionable. Since then, I developed my own little mix of styles. As you can see on the mannequins I dressed, my taste ranges. I like the cute tutu look but I’m wearing a leather skirt, white slouchy tee and pink bra (for the colorful touch) right now. It depends on what I feel good in at that moment.

Chanel’s Jade Nail Polish is Causing a Wait-List Frenzy Attention makeup junkies everywhere: the newest craze in nail color has just hit the market.

This minty green hue was first spotted at Chanel’s runway show for the autumn/winter ‘09 collection. Since then the polish has been picking up lots of heat, just like its waiting list.

If you could change anything in the fashion industry, what would it be?

I would change the concept of this is ‘in’ and this is ‘out’. This doesn’t exist. It’s about what you feel and look good in, that’s the most important thing.

Pamela Anderson and richie rich for Eco Line A*Muse The Venue at the Horseshoe Casino presented a fun night of fashion featuring A*Muse, an eco-friendly line produced by fashion designer Richie Rich (formerly of design duo Heatherette) and inspired by Pamela Anderson. Surprisingly, the one and only Dennis Rodman kicked off the event, which showcased a brightly colored line that seemed like something straight off the beaches of Miami.

Clothing that strutted the runway was mostly a mix of dresses and swimsuits for both men and women.

Islands of the World Fashion Week

Fashionistas everywhere are looking to the islands of the Bahamas for inspiration this season. Islands of the World Fashion Week – the Caribbean’s premier fashion event – has been the talk of the town since its explosive debut last year. The brainchild of financial services guru, Owen Bethel, IWFW emerged from a desire to find innovative ways to bring value added to developing nations, the primary goal of its chief endorser, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which is based in Paris.

The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman The highly anticipated book is finally here, The Sartorialist, by Scott Schuman. It is a collection of photographs taken by Schuman that gives a detailed story through images of street fashion from all over the world.

Chanel Boutique Celebrates Author Amanda Brooks On September 30, Chanel boutique on Michigan Avenue hosted an event for Chicago’s elite. Guests dined on extravagant appetizers from seared ahi tuna and crab cakes to house made ricotta and mingled with the signature cocktail, vodka basil limonata, or champagne. Get Shorty with the Designers Behind the Hip Line

Chicago’s fashionable elite attended the premier of Shorty Clothing’s e-boutique on September 24th, presented by Gen Art at Lumen nightclub in the up-and-coming meatpacking district. The crowd sipped on signature cocktails such as Grey Goose cosmopolitans and dragon berry Bacardi lemonades while mingling and watching the virtual fashion show. Couture & Cocktails

On September 25th, The Women’s Board, along with Couture & Cocktails founders Candace Jordan and Helen Melchior hosted their fourth annual event. The night was stacked with wonderful entertainment, fabulous food, and local celebs. At the start of the night, guests had the chance to mingle with Pamella Roland and internationally renowned DJ Donna D’Cruz. As the night continued, guests sipped on cocktails and tasted gourmet hors d’oeuvres and could bid on the silent auction at the same time.

Roland later showed her most recent Spring 2010 collection, which was then followed by a live auction.

To cap off the night, DJ Donna D’Cruz got the Joffrey dancers and guests onto the dance floor in the Red Lacquer Room. This event kicked off The Joffrey Ballet’s 2009-10 Season. Couture & Cocktails raised just over $250,000, a vast increase from last year’s $150,000 total. A special appearance was made by Chicago VIP’s Giuliana and Bill Rancic.

Tiffany & Co. hosted Forever In Fashion with Maria Pinto

On the evening of September 23, Michigan Avenue’s Tiffany & Co. hosted Forever In Fashion; a celebration of Tiffany jewelry and styling by famed Chicago designer Maria Pinto. The 150 private guests were served champagne and hor d’oeurves while viewing a combination of jewels and models that both walked amongst the crowd as well as posed on jewelry casings. Styled in Maria Pinto’s 2009 fall collection and stunning Tiffany pieces, the models exhibited the art of pulling together an iconic, yet modern look. Guests were joined by Maria Pinto, who readily gave styling tips on the showcased outfits. Such an exhibit of design talent could only result in a night filled with glamour!

Ralph Lauren’s Cocktail Party with Nate Berkus Benefitting DIFFA

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Alfredo Paredes, Executive Vice President of Polo Ralph Lauren and DIFFA National Trustee, along with Designer Nate Berkus and the DIFFA Chicago Board of Trustees, hosted an evening of cocktails and shopping to benefit Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. The party was held at the Ralph Lauren Chicago flagship store on Michigan Ave. Since its founding in 1984, DIFFA has bestowed over $38 million to hundreds of AIDS organizations nationwide. This fundraiser party was no exception and with famous guests like Kate Betts, an editor at TIME Style & Design, and Designer Nate Berkus, who wouldn’t want to be a part of this celebration. Guests nibbled on hors d’oeuvres from the Entertaining Company, including crab cakes with minted cucumber dice, beef tenderloin on crostini with arugula sauce, julienne of duck and vegetables in crepe tied with scallion thread and pumpkin risotto croquettes. Good food along with good fashion and a good cause results in lots of good fun!

Wine, Women and Shoes

Shopping, exquisite wine and raising money for charity?

Earlier this month UNICEF teamed up with over 600 wine lovers and shoe fanatics to raise about $120,000 to help children in over 25 sub-Saharan African countries. The evening was filled with a silent auction offering up luxury items such as two round trip tickets to Buenos Aires and a new Gucci bag.

In addition to bidding on higher priced items, local stores such as Akira and Lori’s Shoes made their clothing and accessories available for party goers to purchase. For the wine lover’s out there, many of the country’s best vintners, including Alexander Valley Vineyards and New Age, provided the delectable wine. The event was a huge success and will help save nearly 1,000 children’s lives. Mark your calendars because the next time Chicagoans get to shop for a cause is the Message of Hope Gala on Saturday, April 17th.

On September 26, the Green Tie Ball XVIII was held at Chicago Illuminating Company to raise money to benefit the Urban Greening of Chicago. This fabulous gala was sponsored by Highland Park-based company Solo Cup, which was a big contributor to making sure this was the “greenest” event Chicago has seen in years. All food and beverages for 1,500 guests were served on the company’s Bare line, which is made of recycled materials. The crowd consisted of Chicago’s young professionals and socialites, who enjoyed casino-style gaming, tasting stations, premium cocktails and a silent auction. The money raised goes to Chicago Gateway Green, a top rated local non-profit doing wonders for Chicago for over 20 years, including planting over 3,000 trees, offsetting vehicle carbon emissions and reducing noise pollution. It was definitely one of the parties of the year.

In his life, and on the runway—Marc Jacobs never fails to put on a good show. That was made clear yet again when Marc By Marc Jacobs partnered with Lucky Magazine to host a get-together at the Chicago flagship MJ store in Wicker Park.

Guests tried on the latest styles from the fall 2009 Marc By Marc Jacobs collection. The shopping experience had a party-esque flair with hors d’oeuvres and trendy cocktails for everyone that attended. A DJ supplied a bit of entertainment and background music for shoppers, and Lucky Style Experts were there to lend a helping hand to customers in need.

To make this event even more glamorous, a professional photographer was available for any and all photo opportunities. In addition, guests were offered a gift, compliments of Lucky Magazine, with every purchase, not to mention $50 in Lucky Bucks towards purchases made that evening.
