Contemporary Collecting
For those seeking to conquer their appetite for food and culture, The Salon Series presents guests with the opportunity to do so. Local artist John Coyle Steinbrunner has collaborated with The Bluebird restaurant in Chicago featuring special evenings complete with a four-course dinner, wine pairings and great conversation about art. This less traditional exhibition was designed to create an element of food and art discussion, get people off their Blackberrys and generate some publicity for Steinbrunner’s latest works, among other artists. We caught up with JC to discuss The Salon Series, his favorite part about the event and his work. -Nicole Simone Why did you decide to start The Salon Series? The Salon Series started during the 2008 recession as an alternative way to market and sell artwork (initially, my own) outside of traditional gallery and show structures. The general caution in spending, especially investing in the arts, had me thinking deeply about how to connect with collectors. This eventually turned into thinking through the gallery system. Why were they so intimidating? I wanted to make an event that showcased artwork in a way that let people form bonds with it. You can’t ask people to financially invest in your art without some form of emotional connection. Fomenting that emotional connection is what I think is missing from contemporary discussion.
What is your favorite part about these events? There are a few points in every evening when the plan goes awry. Generally this happens about 15 minutes into the discussion with the artist when conflicting opinions from audience members take the conversation from polite softball questions to an honest, critical debate between audience and artist and audience members with each other. Sometimes it gets quite vigorous. At these points, I stop pushing the discussion and let it snowball. The goal of Salon is to make the 40 people in that room make their own evening of it. When that happens, it’s just thrilling.
Ikram The Legend of Fashion Ikram Goldman is said to receive the Art Institute of Chicago’s Legend of Fashion Award. The Israeli native, Goldman, has earned her reputation by featuring labels such as Alaïa, Lanvin, Rodarte, and Jason Wu at her Chicago shop. The fashion visionary earned a spot on the 2009 “It List” by Elle magazine and is also known for being a celebrity stylist, including Michelle Obama. On May 5th, Goldman will be presented with the honor by Sally Singer, New York Times style editor. SAIC Fashion Design Department Chair Nick Cave expressed his excitement for the fashion guru by stating, “Ikram is the perfect choice for this award. She is a visionary, not only within the world of fashion, but within the world of art and culture. A visionary doesn’t function solely in the present, but sees into the future. Ikram has that ability. She functions from a place that is about growth and about one’s life continuing to evolve, reform and reshape itself.” Ikram is perfect for the award and we have many great things to look forward to from her in the future. -Nicole Simone
What’s your most memorable moment of being an artist? Every next day I can get into the studio. Factio Magazine Spring 2011| factio-magazine.com
BILL POWERS: What is your earliest memory of encountering art? PIPER PERABO: My earliest art encounter was a giant John Nieto painting of an Indian chief my parents bought while we were living in Dallas. BP: Last show you went to? PP: The last show I went to was the show I saw you at, the combo Joe Bradley and Nate Lowman + Rob Pruitt at Gavin Brown’s enterprise. BP: Favorite instance of art infiltrating Hollywood? PP: My most recent one is the Francis Bacon painting popping up in Inception, or the Ed Ruscha piece in Somewhere, and The Cy Twombly in Ghost Writer that I thought was pretty cool.
How do you choose the artists? Every way possible. Colleagues are an obvious choice since I know them and their work. I ask friends for recommendations and I review work submitted through the website thesalonseries.com. I’m always looking for new artwork and new artists. There are two pre-requisites: Is the work interesting and engaging? And, can the artist discuss their work cogently with a group of people? The Salon may even move into non-fine art territory—the goal is to inspire conversation and critical thinking, face-to-face. Right now it is art because that’s what I know ... but I’m curious about a lot of things. What impact do you feel your paintings have had on the art industry? “Art industry” is an odd term and, like “art world,” I’m not really sure what it means. To me it reflects the opaqueness and insularity we all paint onto that community. Frankly, I’m not really too interested in participating in that. I make paintings. Through various means I find ways to sell them. The people I make an impact on are the ones who make that emotional connection I mentioned before. Sometimes I find them and sometimes vice-versa. If the art industry can help me expand that exposure—as I’m sure it could—then that sounds interesting. Otherwise, I’ve been doing pretty OK hoeing my own row.
Recently Piper Perabo was a Golden Globe nominee for her lead role on “Covert Affairs.” In 2009, she made her Broadway debut in Neil Labute’s “Reasons to be Pretty.” Other projects include films like “The Prestige” and her breakout role in “Coyote Ugly.” Here, Bill Powers talks with Piper about collecting art.
Coming Into Character Through May 29th, artist Jim Nutt will be holding his latest exhibition “Coming Into Character” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. The exhibit will be focusing on a retrospective of his work and the development of his aesthetic as an artist. Nutt has been involved in the art industry for over 40 years but this will be his first showcase in a decade. www.mcachicago.org -Nicole Simone
BP: You once bought a Larry Clark book off a guy I know. What other art books would we find on your shelf? PP: Some art books on my shelf are Lucas Cranach, Egon Schiele, Joseph Cornell, J.W. Waterhouse, Gustave Moreau, John Currin, William Eggleston, John Gutmann, Elizabeth Peyton, and Joseph Sterling. BP: Artists you love? PP: I love Ryan McGinley, Sebastian Mlynarski, Anish Kapoor, Gordon Matta-Clark, Pina Bausch, Jay-Z, and Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. BP: If you could have any photographer — living or dead — do your portrait, who would it be? PP: If I could have any living photographer take my portrait, I’d ask Ryan McGinley. If I could have a dead photographer take it, I’d choose Martin Munkacsi.

Ring of Art
Art vs.Runway
The words modern and vintage seem more like an oxymoron than a cocktail ring, but jewelry designer Sobral does it effortlessly. Through creativity and color, the label truly creates art with each piece of jewelry. Focusing on the sculptural aspects of jewelry design, his latest line of cocktail rings have some serious personality and character. The Kandinsky Munique ring has an ethereal, hippie vibe, with a multi-colored oval top swirling with hues of lavender titanium, silver and copper. On the other end of the spectrum, the designer also creates more pop-inspired pieces like the Pop-Art with Base ring. www.sobralusa.com -Nicole Simone

Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk In 1976, a hungry artist by the name of Jean Paul Gaultier introduced his first ready-to- wear collection to the fashion world with a passion and zest unique to him. He was quickly nicknamed “enfant terrible of fashion.” Many years later, Jean Paul Gaultier has become fashion’s beloved designer who is avant-garde, fresh, and respected globally for his designs. In celebration of his works, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, a tribute to Gaultier, has been commissioned and will debut in June 2011 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. After Montreal, this fashionable homage will journey to the Dallas Museum of Art and San Francisco’s de Young Museum. The exhibit will take patrons on a Gaultier customized journey through fashion seen from five perspectives (Paris, Fusions, Multi-Gender, Eurotrash/ X- Rated, and Metropolis). The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk features 120 haute couture dresses and ready-to-wear pieces for women and men designed by the illustrious designer from 1976-2011. Fans will have a chance to browse original sketches and photographs of his garments and remember his collaborative efforts with others through videos of films, ballets, concerts, fashion shows, and stage shows that he designed for. Gaultier has influenced the world for 35 years and drew his inspiration from everywhere, different cultures, music, movies, television, photography, etc. His creative mind knows no bounds. He is a bold, eccentric, creative designer who’s respected by both his peers and fashion enthusiasts around the world. This first ever-retrospective exhibition, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, is remarkable and a definite must see. www.mbam.qc.ca -Kanae Jointer

They say a picture is a poem without words, and we say that fashion is art that’s come to life. Just like the artists in a gallery, fashion is the designers’ opportunity to paint their world beautiful. So when the two worlds collide at an art gallery opening or an art fair, the room definitely has a creative synergy in the air. Every designer has a style, just as an artist has a favorite medium to work with. This spring, designers have created an overabundance of choices, many pieces inspired by art. Our best advice is to explore and let your style guide you through the latest collections. Here are some examples showing how the two worlds collide. -Kanae Jointer

From November 11-13th, we took our annual jaunt to Nassau, Bahamas for one of our favorite fashion weeks of the year. The sun, talented designers and well-known special guests (Nick Verreos and Jay McCarroll of Project Runway fame) made this fashion week one not to miss. We took in some of our favorite designers who usually showcase, including Harl Taylor BAG of The Bahamas who is consistent with their stunning collections of handbags and clutches made of straw and sisal plait adorned with luxurious beading and shells. K-Bobby of Jamaica stunned us with his beautiful cocktail dresses, both long and short in sumptuous fabrics. ICandy, another Island favorite, showed off some of her latest swimwear creations in rich teals, whites and hot pinks to a crowd that no doubt loves the Bahamian beaches by day.
Jay McCarroll, who won Project Runway’s first season, showed off his colorful spring collection of mini dresses. He hasn’t shown a full collection since his documentary “Eleven Minutes” and it was exciting! Guest designer Indashio from the U.S. brought some bubbly fun to the runway with girly dresses in bright, happy colors, while Oliver Tolentino from the Philippines brought out couture dresses, each more stunning than the last. The final show was “Fashion Cares for Haiti: The Relief Benefit Fashion Show.” Dignitaries from Haiti flew in specifically for the event, sat front row and enjoyed watching the work of Haitian designers. We know where we’ll be next season, do you? www.islandsfashionweek.com - Melissa Maynard

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK SPRING 2011 Photos by Billy Rood, Figphoto.net We’ve seen the collections from New York Fashion Week and now we’ve highlighted the trends for you. NYC brought us a whole new set of ideas and we are delighted to announce that classicism, femininity and pure luxury are back! Also, red, blue and orange are the new dominating colors for fall. A lot of those colors were seen on flowy fabrics oftentimes paired with a casual style, such as coats and parkas. Designers took it up a notch and offered us strong shapes and strict lines. It seems like “menswear suiting” in womenswear never goes out of style. The double-breasted jacket is and always will be a must-have in your closet! Fur trims were strong and seen on coats, accessories, shoes and skirts. Overall, the NYC season brought us great fall fashion to look forward to with pure creativity and innovation. - Vanessa Lambert

LONDON FASHION WEEK SPRING 2011 Photos by Paul Szewcky, allPhotoLondon.com The overall theme for London Fashion Week’s fall/ winter 2011 collections that debuted from February 18-23rd seemed to be previous decades. Each designer had their own decade ranging from the settlers of the 1600s to the 1920s. Designers also tried to bring new gothic designs to the catwalk such as Belle Sauvage, to remind us that their collections were indeed for fall. There were a few who let the spring side of them out too early and gave us a calm, natural collection such as Betty Jackson and Holly Fulton. Fashion trends in womenswear were fur, spring colors and wild prints. Mary Katrantzou mixed the most prints this season. Every skirt, dress and pants contained at least two different prints. Burberry Prorsum may have used the most fur in their collection filled with coats. Menswear trends were sweaters and creativity. Designer J.W. Anderson took menswear to the next level as he dressed his male models in ankle-length A-line skirts. His autumn/ winter collection also consisted of cardigans, two-tier jackets, pleated tailcoats and fur-toed boots. E.Tautz collection consisted of coats, blazers and sweaters all layered in the colors of mustard, burgundy, grey and brown. James Long collection was edgy as his models walked the catwalk in big sweaters and coats in the colors of black, red and grey. -Damonica Boone

Ole Henriksen: African Red Tea Skincare Line The cosmetics line was founded by Ole Henriksen about 30 years ago when he made the decision to create his own products after being diagnosed with cystic acne. After achieving a degree in cosmetic chemistry and skincare in London, Henriksen created a skincare line with the quality of spa treatments that were available for consumers in retail stores. His most recent line of products focuses around the use of red tea and includes a foaming cleanser, face mist, face scrub, face mask, and face crème. The incorporation of African red tea helps to strengthen the skin’s outer layer, in turn slowing the aging process. This line of products is also full of Borage Seed Oil, Vitamin C, grapefruit, orange and tangerine extracts. Overall, its soothing, non-drying formula is strong enough to remove makeup but gentle enough for regular use on sensitive skin. The spa quality line retails for $28 to $65 and is available at high-end retail stores and cosmetic boutiques or at www.olehenriksen.com. -Nicole Simone

He is a Windy City-based menswear designer who has established a name for himself in Miami and New York, and now is taking over his own city by storm. If you missed the fashion show, you missed a real treat! The event space was great, consisting of exposed brick on the walls and wooden rafters on the ceiling, which created a warm and ambient feel. The event also hosted a special performance by violinist Katarina and DJ Galvan. When the show started, we watched with much anticipation as the male models walked down the runway in basic black and a few opulent details all combined in tailored silhouettes. The highlight of the night was the new accessory for men: Fur, as in fox fur hanging like a bag on your shoulder. Overall, the design details were refined and had somewhat of a relaxed and modern dandyism to it. The motto here, men should always dress to impress! - Vanessa Lambert
Nivea for Men’s Posh Mansion Party A perfect January Los Angeles night amidst the posh section of Beverly Hills was the cool backdrop to Nivea for Men’s pre-Golden Globes Party, launching NFM’s 2011 marketing campaign entitled “Look Like You Give a Damn.” Nivea’s celebration, housed in style at the estate of internationally-famed jeweler Pascal Mouawad, predicated itself on the precept of the ‘re-civilization of men,’ with a nod to Old Hollywood and its well-groomed, debonair legacy. Such notable Hollywoodians as Mekhi Phifer, Shar Jackson, and Izabella Miko, to name a few, showed up to add flair to the event. As the task to re-civilize men is at face value an aggressively ambitious undertaking, it would conceivably be less daunting in a comfortable, well-acclimated environment. Men - re-civilized, hopelessly barbaric, or otherwise - all have heartfelt appreciation for red meat, tasty libations, burlesque, and of course unusually close brushes with death. Nivea, clearly not giving one damn to expense, smartly played on these male genetic truths. Five-star quality food was served at stations set up along the main floor of the five bedroom-seven bathroom Beverly Hills mansion, with filet mignon, lamb chops, lobster and sushi highlighting the menu. Two well-apportioned, open bars bookended the stations. The mansion’s second floor housed various rooms that provided even more unexpected entertainment. The main bedroom, with its bathroom that would dwarf a majority of Manhattan flats, served as a spa of sorts with plenty of space, beds, plush chairs and open air from the balcony to refresh the party-goers. Across the way in one of the guest bedrooms was a jazz lounge with a golf putting green open to the public. Another guest bedroom housed the burlesque/dessert room. The word ‘decadent’ would be a staggering understatement to describe it. The highlight of the evening had to be the tiger that guests were allowed to take a picture with on a back patio bed. The seriously wild animal had a handler, but even he could not contain the beast’s utter irritation to the constant picture posing and other un-tiger-like activities surrounding it. By the time I was less than a foot to its foaming mouth, it was writhing and jawing as if it had had enough. The picture was taken and I bounced off that bed like someone had pushed the eject button. The exhilaration was the perfect ending to what was a solid launch for Nivea, which will travel the country on its quest to energize its campaign and refine all men. -Kevin M. Fantasy Fundraiser: “Masked Ball” The Guild Board of Directors’ 27th annual fantasy fundraiser, “Masked Ball,” held 550 in attendance at the Civic Opera House on Saturday, February 5, 2011. A perennial backdrop of deep-fuchsia and hot pink orchids in crystal cut centerpieces, eggplant table linens and curtains, and rose-colored lighting all set the mood for the ball. Not only did the event’s décor set the scene, but guests alike took part in the spirit, where ornate masks were everywhere. Chicago’s top chefs prepared an array of savory bites for guests who also enjoyed “Royale Unmasked” cocktails prepared with blackberry cassis and champagne. Silent bidding (for the first time this year) was available electronically for guests by using their own communication devices or ones provided for the evening. Overall, the Fantasy of the Opera gala benefit raised $484,000 for the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Guild Board of Directors. - Nicole Simone

Omega Launch Party The Omega launch party was quite a success with over 100 guests in attendance at the boutique opening in Chicago. While sipping on a glass of champagne, guests were able to try on an array of Omega watches including styles from their new ladies collection, Ladymatic. Light hors d’oeuvres were also served; and at the end of the evening chocolate dipped strawberries made the rounds, which we simply couldn’t resist. The Rush Women’s Board partnered with them for the opening, and the women enjoyed a fun dinner at La Spiaggia across the street afterwards with Stephen Urquhart, the company’s CEO. -Vanessa Lambert
Sebastien Grey Custom Clothiers celebrated the launch of their line and announced the opening of their shops in the Loop, South Loop, and Lincoln Park locations of Halo for Men. The event catered to the stylish men of Chicago, as they rolled and smoked some of the finest cigars, sipped on Chaves and sampled tasty dishes prepared by Chef Ryan Poli. They had a sneak peek at the collection of customized shirts, slacks, vests, and three-piece suits. Grey even threw in a complimentary signature tie and a generous gift card toward their purchase. This was a must attend event for all those well-groomed men of Chicago. -Kanae Jointer factio-magazine.com | Factio Magazine Spring 2011
