Celebrate Good Times...

A

Who said print media is dead?" - Anonymous

nd we meet again! We made it through the hardest of summers, you guys. And though September will bring the humidity, we can’t help but feel a sense of celebration here at FACT. Not only because we have something big to be celebrating but also because the worst of the scorchin’ heat is behind us! With that said, it gives me immense pleasure to say that September 2019 marks the 100th issue of FACT Qatar magazine. That’s right - 100 creative covers, 100 times we’ve delved into the culture and happenings in Doha, and 100 bona fide publications of all the tips and tricks to enjoy this city we all call home. I’ve only been a part of the FACT team for a few months now (though time sure does fly) and I’ve been having a great journey so far. However, I feel like there is one person we should be giving the credit to: the lovely Shabana Adam. The creative mind behind all these issues, Shabs (as we know her!) has been nothing short of inspiring for yours truly. Here’s a little love from her to you... take it away Shabana!

Anushay Taimur Khan Editor anushay@fact-magazine.com Insta: @anushaytkhan

W

ell, this is just a little bit crazy, wouldn’t you agree? 100 issues wow! We’re incredibly humbled and ecstatic for the amount of support we’ve received from our readers, friends, followers and clients over the years. FACT Qatar has a really special place in our hearts here at Nans Group Publishing; it’s stood the test of change and time, breaking all cultural boundaries and bringing the Doha crowd a reliable source of information for their monthly calendars. Covering all the best and latest in food, arts, culture, travel, fashion, tech and so much more - we are certainly kept on our toes every month when putting together the next best issue for all of you. Let’s talk about some of our highs: how about the success of our annual FACT Dining Awards where we celebrate the best in the culinary game; or the rise of access to exclusive content, whether that be celebrity interviews or faraway experiences for our travel pages - FACT is well-recognised within the industry. Personally, I would like to thank every single person on our team - those behind-the-scenes who work tirelessly to produce the best product - you’re all rockstars. Next, to the readers who have been around since are humble beginnings, and every person who has ever picked up an issue of FACT to give it a read - we do this for you! Of course, we could all do without the late nights and creeping deadlines but where’s the fun in that? :P Here’s to the next 100 and always being able to share information to help you life your best life here in Doha.☺

Breakfast of Champions ALWADI HOTEL DOHA MGALLERY HOTEL COLLECTION HAS INTRODUCED ANOTHER ADDITION TO ITS EXQUISITE REPERTOIRE OF RESTAURANTS – DOHA’S FIRST AUTHENTIC BREAKFAST ROOM, LE COLONIAL.

THE COLONIAL ERA BROUGHT many firsts to Qatar, and Le Colonial restaurant is continuing that tradition as the first bona fide Breakfast Room in Doha. Le Colonial Breakfast Room offers a delicious selection of ὰ la carte breakfast options with a variety of international and local specialities and a corner for healthy items. Starting from 6am to 3pm, it’s perfect for an early boost whether guests are planning a full-day of exploring Doha or having a packed schedule of meetings ahead, or even if they are craving for a lazy morning and leisurely late breakfast. On the launch of Le Colonial, Dominic Arel, General Manager, Alwadi Hotel Doha, said: “At Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery, we believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day which sets the tone for what lies ahead. Le Colonial is the perfect setting to relax and start your day while gaining an insight into Doha’s past,” he continued. “Just like our other unique offerings, we are confident that this newly launched restaurant will be able to live up to the customers’ expectations and would become one of the most preferred breakfast settings for the people of Qatar.” The expansive menu at Le Colonial boasts of Arabic basket – 8

In addition to starting-off the day, Le Colonial offers guests a glimpse into the past inspired by the colonial age – the restaurant is designed with postage stamps in tribute to Qatar Post, and its floor is adorned with names of the ports of Qatar. The restaurant also overlooks the traditional Souq Waqif where you can sit and enjoy the view while sensing the tempting smell of the freshly baked bread and the authentic fresh dishes. ✤

17. GOING LOCAL

Whether it’s a centuries-old Batoola face-mask, an authentic ladies abbaya in black, a classic male ghutra (headress), or a young man’s toy sword that you’re looking for, the souq is definitely the right place to find all traditional Qatari dress.

18. FOOD HOTSPOTS

There are so many nice places to stop for a bite in Souq Waqif. Parisa, Damasca One, Tagine, and Le Gourmet are the most frequented by visitors for their amazing food and drinks, with quality ingredients, a buzzing ambience and fab service.

19. OLD SCHOOL

Dar Al Tamimy Hamad will catch your eye as it often has an old Dhow boat parked outside or guard displays for the public. Inside, you’ll find yourself surrounded by old antiques with fans, kettles, cameras, typewriters and much more.

20. SWEET THINGS

Head over to Fal El Khair for some world-class honey from Yemen and the finest dates from around the world. The store also sells bottles of rose water and bee pollen lozenges - so whatever the ailment or taste, you’re likely to find a unique concoction here.

21. HOARDER’S CALL

The souq is the best place to find yourself the most random and outof-the-box products that could truly become collector’s items or just souvenirs adorning your living room that make for a good travel story. However, there are plenty of shiny trinkets that could tempt the eye so watch out for what you buy if you want to avoid hoarding!

SOUQ WAQIF TIPS 1. Hit the souq early in the morning to avoid crowded shops and alleys. 2. Don’t forget that most shops close midafternoon for siesta so double check opening hours. 3. Wear comfortable walking shoes to avoid blisters. 4. There are special carriers who you can pay QR10 to help you carry your purchases in a wheelbarrow to the car or taxi. 5. Some evenings there are special guards who patrol the souq on horses for a taste of traditional revelry. 6. Haggle - don’t be shy to ask for a better price on what you want to purchase. Vendors expect and often accept reasonable offers, especially if you’re buying more than one item. Location: Between Al Rayyan Road and Musherib Street Opening Hours: Most shops open from 10am to 1pm & reopen from 4pm to 10pm Getting There: Local taxi, Uber or Careem - if you’re staying close by and it’s the winter time, a walk to Souq Waqif is very pleasant.

ou can’t miss the Radisson Blu Hotel Doha; its gleaming gold facade immediately attracts attention, and we know that we’re in for a treat. Fitting perfectly into the upscale metropolis if Doha, the hotel exudes resort feels with its classic yet sophisticated interior and contemporary, well-designed rooms. With 583 rooms and suites, the Raddison Blu Hotel, Doha has garnered a loyal clientele over the years - whether business, leisure or casual drop ins for dining - this place triggers great memories and stories for many visitors, both local and international. When it comes to accommodation, the hotel has everything from your standard room type to the executive level and all the way up to the presidential suite as well as apartment style quarters too. Lounge access if offered with a number of room types, which adds a whole new relaxing dimension to your stay. Decorative themes for the rooms are influenced by Asia, England, Scotland and traditional Arabic culture, providing international flair for elite travellers. The iconic style of Radisson Blu paired with world-class amenities and upmarket bath products delivers unmatched accommodation in Doha. However, it’s the attention to detail and personalisation that we admired the most. Small things like having ample bottles of water in the room, which are topped up every day, alongside plug sockets in all the right, convenient places and even that there is no noise from outside, all add to the comfort of our stay. What we want to rave most about though, is the hotel’s not one, not two, but 11 distinctive dining destinations - something for every day of the week - and then some. When staying at Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha, your food choices become limitless, and we can’t help but rave about the the eateries that really stood out for us… BOMBAY BALTI One of the hotel’s award-winning Indian restaurants, this place has fact magazine

become an institution amongst those who favour their food with a flavours and spice. As a venue, Bombay Balti can be identified from far away. The colours of the Indian flag hang at the ceiling so you simply know that this is the place you need to go when you’re craving authenticity. Food is the name of the game and the restaurant really delivers. We’d highly recommend the Mixed Tandoori Platter which comes adorned with the best lamb cutlets we’ve tried. Dive in for the famous butter chicken - here it’s soft and silky, and seasoned just right. If you’ve got room for dessert, the rasmalai is an absolute must. Soft cottage cheese swims in a syrup of milk and sugar, it’s heavenly. RUBY WU’S As the hotel is split between two adjoining buildings, you’ll find Ruby Wu’s at the bottom of a mini grand staircase, decorated in deep hues with understated, elegant touches. Spanning the vast culinary map of China, Ruby Wu’s serves tender duck, skilfully wrapped dumplings, juicy beef, spicy snapper and more. Expert chefs and knowledgeable servers ensure a satisfying experience. The ambience is perfect for an evening with your family and friends. It’s the impeccable baskets of dim sum that oozed out flavour, which had us in culinary awe. BENTLEY’S GRILL There isn’t another venue in Doha that carries the same charm and elegance as Bentley’s Grill. Steak lovers have been coming to dine in its sophisticated surroundings for years and the quality of food and service keeps loyal patrons coming back. The Alaskan Crab Cake appetisers are still a dazzling choice to begin with, as smoked paprika, salmon roe and herb aioli round off the simple starter. Delicious! We 52

INGINUITY Ever wanted to feel like you’re walking into a good friend’s home where they’ve got their favourite paintings and artwork on the walls, big comfy chairs and tables, and an area dedicated to pouring you a glass of your favourite liquid concoction? This is exactly what it feels like when you enter Inginuity. It’s a casual dining venue that keeps things homely and simple. Tuck into the venue’s famous Steak Diane which is given a real flambé treatment table-side with a portion of the most tasty fries - topped with rosemary salt, smoked paprika and truffle oil. Start with the kani salad to refresh your palate and end with the Pistachio and Almond Panna Cotta and Raspberry Sauce. Chances are that the bartenders and servers will become good friends and you’ll be welcomed back with the warmest greetings, every time.

can also vouch for the Earl Grey tea cured salmon. You really can taste the tea in the salmon – it’s one of those very innovative dining moments. The pan fried duck breasts are gorgeous and neatly served with potato and duck meat croquettes garnished with grilled wedges. Highly recommended. Of course, your choice of steak and sides will not disappoint either. For dessert, the rhubarb crumble was almost a pudding of its own with a basket of vanilla ice cream and sticky toffee sauce. SO good. This is one consistently comfortable venue! SAKURA There is something nostalgic and reminiscent of Japanese eateries about Sakura as a venue and a place that serves up some of the best Japanese cuisine in town. Its walkway reminds us of the narrow alleys down which you can find authentic eats in Japan - the dining area itself is also set up beautifully. You can sit around the serving bar and witness the live teppanyaki cooking up close. As the service areas are greased with hot oil, get ready for the fire to erupt at any time. Beef and chicken teppanyaki with grilled vegetables and fried rice is cooked up theatrically by their master chef. You can also indulge in sushi and other Japanese delights at Sakura, with plenty of options in a lively ambience which was frequented by families, business people, solo diners, couples and generally anyone looking for good food. THE FRYING SCOTSMAN The new kid on the block at the hotel, if you’re ever craving that very comforting taste of authentic British Fish & Chips in the heart of Doha, this is the place to get it. Classic choices reminiscent of British seaside towns, made for supper any day of the week.

THE ITALIAN JOB Hidden in an out-house on the far side of the large outdoor family pool area is The Italian Job named after the Michael Caine movie and its menus are full of the iconic quotes and motifs from the classic British film like “you’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!”Although the movie has very little to do with Italy, it’s hard to pick fault with this place, where the staff ensure that you’re looked after in a home away from home setting. The venue is cosily decorated, reminiscent of an Italian farmhouse with lots of wood brick and earthy colours. Tables are nestled in alcoves or brick booths and even as we’re sat close to other diners, the set-up doesn’t feel crowded; you still have your own space and privacy. Here, indulging comes first. Go for the Burrata Cheese with Beef Bresaola Roses – simply delectable. For mains, our hearts (and tummies) were filled with the guitar spaghetti with lobster and herbs - an excellent coming together of ingredients. Desserts at The Italian Job are dangerously TASTY! The rich almond chocolate cake with sabayon and marsala wine ice cream is very popular and for good reason. Aside from the above, Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha is also home to another great Indian eatery: Chingari, alongside Shehrazad, a pub-style outlet, all-day dining spot Hyde Park Coffee Shop, Palm Garden Cafe, the lounge-cum-club named Qube, Orion, The Library, Manhattan Lounge, and dessert parlour - The Chocolate Box. There really is no need to leave this place during your stay. As far as wellness goes, the hotel offers an abundance of recreational activities and world-class amenities, including two large, fully equipped gyms; two sparkling pools; squash and tennis courts; an outdoor Jacuzzi; massage facilities; volleyball, basketball and badminton courts and more. There’s a complimentary hourly airport shuttle for quick and easy access to Hamad International Airport, and the friendly concierge staff will help with any other queries or questions you may have. Staying at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha will always feel like being at home. So, what are you waiting for? Experience it all for yourself today! ✤

ur visit to the Maldives coincided with a residency by acclaimed Chef Colin Clague who avid readers will know as the Executive Chef of Rüya Dubai. The culinary adventure at the stunning Coco Bodu Hithi Resort included a masterclass in which we learned to make Rüya’s signature Levrek. A dish of sea bass sashimi with mustard, apple, and shaved radish (the key is a cold plate and top quality fish). The informal masterclass taught us the basics as we assisted in bringing Turkish cuisine to the shores of Coco Bodu Hithi. The island itself represents a slice of paradise with its reef fringed waters, palm tree flanked beaches, and memorable Maldivian sunsets we were delighted to play the role of castaways, albeit with a somewhat luxurious slant, while exploring the small island. Offering a number of accommodation options and a total of 100 villas, the picture-postcard expectation of the Maldives would usually involve an over-water villa but we’d highly suggest considering the Island Villa as an alternative. Offering direct access to the ocean via an exclusive patch of the private beach, the island villas are much larger, clocking in at a more than generous 188sqm. The ideal island retreat,

Located within a courtyard planted with lush vegetation, the first of two outdoor areas that flank the villa blends seamlessly into the surrounding jungle where fruit pats flap overhead and lizards dart about in search of shade. A pair of sun loungers, an elevated daybed situated over the pool on a raised dais and an outdoor

shower complete the picture of privacy. When compared to the over-water villas, the pool in these island villas is not overlooked, making it a preferential option for those in search of complete isolation. A beachfront terrace includes a small deck that bridges the area between vegetation and sand and affords glimpses of the turquoise ocean through the shaded tree-line, while presenting direct access to the beach and its warm shallow waters filled with blacktip reef sharks and skittish crabs. With pretty thatched roofs, each villa has been designed using traditional Maldivian materials which add a rustic simplicity to the charming castaway feel. Yet a sense of luxury prevails with guests’ needs easily catered for in a villa that you’ll most likely not want to leave for the duration of your stay.

Six restaurants and bars ensure that Coco Bodu Hithi encourages guests to partake in a culinary journey around the island during the course of their stay. Dining options include elevated wine lofts or upon wooden platforms suspended above the waves while watching the sun sink below the horizon. Coco Bodu Hithi represents the epitome of destination dining with a number of cuisines represented. The international buffet at Air overlooks the tranquil infinity pool, where blue waters blend with both the ocean and the sky to create an unforgettable colour palette. Sushi and sashimi come from the small but impressive sushi bar at Tsuki. While finedining restaurant Stars boasts unrivalled views of the night sky, which if you dine on a clear day will likely leave you awe-struck. Latitude is the place to go for light bites and poolside snacks - think salads, sandwiches and pizzas accompanied by a cheeky cocktail (or two). A twice-weekly beachside BBQ is offered at Breeze, allowing guests to dine on fresh seafood with their toes in the sand. Or for those looking to embrace true Maldivian privacy and exclusivity, in-villa dining is offered. Complete with floating breakfast trays for the ultimate Instagram snap. Our preference for dining would be seafood spot Aqua. Fully embracing the elemental name and the theme of water, the menu usually revolves around shellfish and sunsets but the night we dine re-connects us with Chef Colin Clague for a specially curated six-course menu of Anatolian flavours. Having worked as part of the opening team at Dubai’s Burj Al Arab and high-end Japanese izakaya concept Zuma, Clague’s penchant for flavour and quality ingredients is enviable and we’re impressed at the consistency of the dishes and how they’re identical in taste to their Dubai counterparts, despite the notorious difficulties surrounding the sourcing of ingredients in the Maldives. The menu boasted six of Rüya’s most popular dishes including 300-day grain-fed beef with a robust Turkish coffee and isot rub, the moreish filo-wrapped feta cheese Borek and (our personal favourite), Firin Sutlaç - a traditional Anatolian rice pudding enhance via sweet lokum and the subtle use of rose. fact magazine

SPA

Located on a wooden boardwalk that seemingly hovers above the calm waters of the Indian Ocean that is alive with turtles and stingrays, lies the Coco Spa. Six overwater pavilions make for soothing treatment rooms for both individuals and couples and provide the ideal location to focus on wellbeing and selfrenewal. The glass floors within the treatment rooms add a nice touch and the underwater world with its abundance of marine life makes for a serene visual to accompany massage rituals and beautifying body therapies. The Spa area also features a sauna and steam room, yoga studio and a small but adequate fitness centre. Again, privacy is a priority and all spa treatments are also offered in-villa to ensure complete comfort and discretion for guests.

LEISURE

Dotted around the perimeter of the sandy island is the water sports centre where complimentary kayaks and snorkelling equipment can be used to navigate the crystal clear waters. Motorised water sports such as jet-skiing wake-boarding and catamaran sailing are offered at an additional fee. The dive centre is a hub of activity and is frequented by most visitors to the island for both PADI certification and excursions. For Coco Bodu Hithi is renowned for its spectacular and wellpreserved house reef, home to fascinating coral caverns filled with colourful fish. Tennis courts, a meeting room, small boutique, and the marine biology centre also feature prominently amongst the sandy pathways of the island. The beauty of a resort like Coco Bodu Hithi is accessibility. A brief speedboat ride brings guests to the pristine island paradise from Malé. With so many resorts in the Maldives vying for the attention of holidaymakers, the ease of transit is a make or break decision when it comes to choosing a resort. Combine this with the flawlessly appointed villas and eclectic dining options, staying at Coco Bodu Hithi is a no brainer. ✤ 58

alking through the very doors that the likes of Winston Churchill, the Queen of England and many other prominent world figures have stepped through really feels like a journey of discovery. This is the iconic Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London; a building that speaks to the very fabric of the English capital’s architecture, history and deep heritage. It is where traditionally-dressed bellman in red coats and top hats greet you with warm smiles and sincere wishes for the day - reminding guests of the oldworld, classic English charm that so many visitors are looking for in London. In fact, pleasantries are plenty and welcoming as the staff at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London all carry this same graceful approach to dealing with guests. In a bustling city during peak summer season, this is a first impression that we applaud. Housed in a 117-year-old landmark building, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London reopened its doors in April 2019 after a restoration of its guest rooms and suites, including two newly created expansive penthouse suites. Conveying signature Mandarin touches, the London property boasts distinctive design and a strong sense of place, with both local elements and oriental flair meeting to create intuitive service that is as reflective of its British roots as it is synonymous with the brand’s oriental charisma.

Walk into the lobby and admire the understated elegance of a reception area that feels so much like walking into an old friend’s home. At check-in, we’re a little early and are shown to the very sophisticated Mandarin Bar for complimentary mocktails - a nice gesture by the MO team to start off our stay. SUITE TEMPTATIONS Instantly, you will recognise that the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London is not doing things by halves – all 181 guest rooms and suites are now more luxurious and comfortable than ever before, with art deco-inspired features including carefully curated artworks and custom-designed furniture. There are too many nooks and details for us to capture for the ‘gram and we’re completely in zen mode when lounging in our Knightsbridge Suite. It’s no wonder that the space feels so inviting and effortless as the interior is a result of internationally renowned designer, Joyce Wang’s meticulous skills. She has overseen the redesign of all guest rooms and suites, along with the creation of the hotel’s new Penthouses, taking inspiration from the peaceful parkside location, as well as the glamour of the early 20th century’s Golden Age of travel. The suite is the size of a luxury apartment, designed with an airy, creative approach where space has been used practically and stylishly. Thoughtful touches with iconic

decor like innovative lighting, are used to remind guests of the unique themes. These beautiful suites feature a generous living room with a velvet sofa, a reading chair and a mirrored coffee table. The striking glass chandelier, gilded mirror artwork and hand tufted carpets and rugs reflect the beauty of nearby leafy Hyde Park. With a design inspired by the 20th century’s Golden Age of travel, these spacious suites provide a high level of luxury. Each lavish suite has a curated library of books by Mayfair publishers, Heywood Hill for guests to enjoy (we found a few by one of our favourite travel writers, Bill Bryson). Featuring views of buzzing Knightsbridge, this suite offers a sense of comfort and understated luxury. The en-suite bathroom is one of those that you would dream of having in your own home; elegantly fashioned from Volakas marble with a frieze made from Palisandro Bleu marble and twin vanity units as well as a huge rainforest shower. More than ideal for a group of friends, a couple or even a young family, who need their own space and mirror for makeup or grooming. Space is no issue here. A separate walk-in wardrobe is situated next to the living room whilst cupboard and closet space is abundant in the bedroom and living room too. However, it was in the details that we found the true essence of the Mandarin Oriental brand’s excelled service shine through. Plug sockets are neatly tucked away near both sides of the bed so there’s no arguing over who gets to charge their devices; in every suite, guests will find a host of special additions ranging from yoga mats for private practice, GHD hair straighteners, Nespresso coffee makers, his and her Miller Harris bathroom amenities and Jo Hansford hair products. We even receive complimentary amenities in the form of chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of bubbly during the stay - it’s all about the small added touches. WORLD-CLASS DINING If food is your forte, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London has it all to make your stay the most exciting for every palate. All eyes are on the eclectic dining destinations which include the only London venue by Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud, Bar Boulud, the inspirational gastronomy of Heston Blumenthal at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, and quintessentially British, fact magazine

The Roseberry for all-day dining and afternoon tea, alongside the magnificent Mandarin Bar. As far as food goes, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London is bringing its A-game to the city’s luxury culinary scene. Start your day with a sumptuous breakfast where an extensive (and very delicious) menu includes everything from eggs benedict to fresh juices, fluffy French toast, pastries galore and even weekly changing specials plus Chinese and Japanese breakfast menus including cantonese dim sum and miso soup amongst other delicacies. Healthy options are aplenty with granola parfait, porridge and oats, egg whites and more to choose from. We’d highly recommend going down for breakfast between 9.30am-10.30am and either sitting on the gorgeous patio outside or indoors by the window. Why? Because these are the best spots from where to view the liveried royal guards trotting by in formation with Hyde park as a background a truly British experience. For dinner, we head to the acclaimed Bar Boulud and are very impressed with the mid-week crowd. The atmosphere is abuzz with diners when we visit – somebody celebrating a birthday, colleagues grabbing drinks after work, couples enjoying an intimate meal and families letting their taste buds explore new dishes for the evening. Our waiter for the evening, Jon Luca, is one of the reasons why the whole dining experience was an exceptional one. Friendly, accommodating of our dietary requirements and very knowledgeable on the menu, his forthcoming nature was appreciated. Bar Boulud is a stylish bistro and wine bar specialising in seasonal, rustic French cooking. Its relaxed ambience and fabulous cuisine has won plaudits from critics and diners alike. Incorporating two large connecting rooms, the restaurant features stunning design points such as an impressive zinc topped bar and a sleek open kitchen. Classic materials such as wood, leather and cork add a contemporary touch. As well as the main restaurant, guests have the option of dining at the charcuterie counter where they can watch the chefs at work. It’s simple dishes like the burrata cheese, cherry tomatoes and rocket pesto that remind us why freshness and flavour don’t have to be over-indulgent ingredients but rather quality is what matters. This is indeed a creamy burrata that we devour in minutes - Jon Luca’s recommendation of course (and a little of his Italian roots). The mezze is a great mix of baba ganoush, hummus, tzatziki lavash and socca chips - the perfect sharing dish to get conversation going. The Lobster Roll: Cornish lobster, confit lemon tarragon mayonnaise and brioche bun is a little bit of a revelation and a dish that seafood lovers should absolutely order. Next, the grilled sea bass, harrisa marinated peach Freekeh rice, spring onion is a dish that will please even the most discerning palate with its different textures and tastes. The restaurant is famed for its meat offerings with the pan-seared 12oz ribeye, 6oz hanger steak and range of juicy burgers taking centre stage. fact magazine

We love that the menu is a good manageable size with enough options to please all dietary requirements without straying too far from the original dish. For those who would love to savour a glass of their finest liquid concoctions, ask for the head sommelier for his recommendations or let the talented barman whip up something flavourful for Service is at the level of what’s to be expected at a venue that belongs to a Michelin-Starred chef – everyone is clued up on the food and eager to make recommendations. Professional yet personable - Bar Boulud epitomises everything we love about London, and everything we love about good food. TIME TO RELAX New York designer Adam D. Tihany, has overseen the redesign of the next-generation Spa. In keeping with the fresh new look, the extensive spa menu has also been enhanced to include exclusive partnerships with some of the most sought-after health and wellness experts in the world. The new spa features 13 individual treatments rooms, an Oriental Suite with two massage beds and a Rasul water temple, a room designed for traditional ASANTE Chinese Medicine consultations and treatments and a Bastien Gonzalez Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio – the first of its kind in the UK. Their is also a well-equipped gym and a lovely indoor pool to while away the hours. If walls could talk, this established hotel would have many stories to tell. The building was commissioned in the late 1880s however construction was initially delayed due to fears that its height would cast a shadow over the Serpentine. It finally opened in 1889 as an exclusive block of apartments for affluent bachelors, before opening as a hotel, with its own private Royal Entrance, in 1902. Since then, many honoured guests have passed through the hotel, and for several years after the Second World War it was the headquarters of the SAS. Glamorous parties and dance classes by the venerable Madame Vacani – who taught HRH Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret to dance – have been held in the ballroom. Sir Winston Churchill lived in the hotel for a while and was known to offer room service waiters two cigars in return for the delivery of an early breakfast. Many of these momentous past events can be viewed in more detail in the newly created Historical Journey Exhibition on permanent display in the hotel. There is nothing we love more than hospitality that so flawlessly exceeds our expectations. The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London did just that and then some - luxury living at its peak. ✤

A Stroke OF LOVE

WHAT IS A DUET BUT A LOVE SONG? FACT’S ANUSHAY TAIMUR KHAN GOT A TAD BIT EMOTIONAL AS SHE SAT DOWN WITH HANADY AL-OTHMAN TO TALK ABOUT HER FIRST MOTHERSON ART EXHIBITION WITH AHMED AL JUFAIRI. A SHOWCASE THAT REFLECTS DEVOTION AND AFFECTION BETWEEN THE PAIR, ILLUSTRATING THE PUREST FORM OF LOVE BETWEEN A PARENT AND CHILD WHEN THEY SHARE A CREATIVE PASSION… Hi Hanady! Congratulations on your first exhibition! How was it for you to start this journey in the art world with your son? I didn’t expect this reaction from everyone, honestly. Everyone was so encouraging – I think I feel this way because this is my first time exhibiting. It was Ahmed who was pushing me since the past few years. I know he inherited this gift from me but, he was able to study and learn the rules of art. Yet, he taught me that there are no rules for art; it’s just what you feel. You just have to take it out and put it on a canvas. He was the one who set the date, he got me everything and asked me to go ahead. I loved the concept that came forth of a mother and a son doing something together – I did it to encourage him. How did you come to choose the concept of this exhibition? 2019 is the cultural year between Qatar and India. Because we have a talent in the family and my daughters also love Indian inspired designs, we just wanted to do something to join the celebration. When Ahmed told me that it will be about the cultural year, it was difficult to focus on one concept and create different pieces. India, for me, is a whole world of art, culture and history. I couldn’t imagine putting it into two or three canvases. 66

I focused on what I loved about India; Holi. It was all about colours for me. I started my journey at a mosque from India and Doha, and then, I went ahead with experimenting with colours. How was the reaction when you first told everyone about this exhibition? I started working on this exhibition without showing anyone my work. My mother was so surprised, my father was so happy and everyone was so supportive! Even the comments on my Instagram were encouraging that it makes me think; where have I been? Why didn’t you consider having an exhibition before? When I was born, I think I was born with a pencil in my hand. I like to draw everywhere; I always have a pen or a pencil near me and I always doodle. By the time I got into university, there were no options for an art degree. The first time that art was introduced as a subject, I was already into my field and I didn’t want to waste those two years and begin again. So, art was just a hobby for me. Then, life happened. I got married, I had kids. Ahmed, being my second child, always followed whatever I did. Whatever I did on a piece of paper, he did the same thing. All I did at that time was to encourage him to go for arts. Even though I was told that there is no future in this industry and that engineering and business dominate the ‘real

world’ but, I stood my ground and wanted the dream of my life come true through him. When he pushed me to do this exhibition, I went ahead with it because I did it for him, not myself. I still say that my art has mistakes that his canvases never have because I am a beginner. It’s still never too late. What other plans do you have for yourself as an artist? I have a lot of things in my mind. But I feel like I need a break to get it all penned down and go in the right direction. I don’t want to begin at the top and then fail. I want to make sure I sustain the level of excellence I can offer and I just want to keep doing better. Now, my son is pushing me for something else! I keep telling him I’m too old! I have grandkids! He just doesn’t listen and simply asks me to take care of myself and wants me to pursue this line now: ‘Let your dream come true’, he says. What is your message for women who want to pursue a career in arts? It is never too late for anything. After my daughters are married, Ahmed has graduated, and my youngest is busy with his university life, I think this is the time that I should give to myself. That’s what Ahmed told me, ‘Now, it’s your turn to live your life. You lived your whole life for us and this is the first step of your new life.’ I hope I keep painting and don’t stop after this. ✤ fact magazine

What follows is Elizabeth, a journalist, covering the story for a magazine and interviewing one of the ringleaders as she tries to figure out what went wrong.

DIRECTOR: Lorene Scafaria CAST: Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Bringing together Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer and Cardi B, Hustlers has got to be one of the biggest releases of the year. Based on New York magazine’s 2015 article The Hustlers at Scores by Jessica Pressler, the film is girl power at its finest as a group of strippers turn the tables on their customers. A real-life revenge tale, the plot follows a determined single mother and an ageing dancer, that lead a crew of savvy former strip club employees who come together to get back at their Wall Street clients. As Lopez teaches Wu’s newbie character her moves on the pole, the women decide to take advantage of a few of their clients and ultimately take it too far. Unlike earlier stripper-centric movies, Hustlers is adapted and directed by a woman, Lorene Scafaria. Offering an empathetic narrative on men and women as well as our gender roles, the film will give you something to think about, while having you perched on the edge of your seat.

Calling all Swifties! Two years after the release of her chart-topping album, Reputation, Taylor Swift is making a comeback. And though she claims that the real Taylor can’t come to the phone right now, her seventh studio album and first release under Republic Records, focuses on just as much romance as its predecessors. However, Lover is much more upbeat and technicolour than her last release. Featuring Brendon Urie, “Me” is the epitome of a Taylor Swift lead single. A song about embracing your individuality and really owning it, the song will make you feel better about yourself, with its infectious pop hook being the momentary escape we all need. Showcasing an exuberant pop sound, the Lover era ushers in self-reflection as well as raw emotions. Continuing to spread self-love and positivity, “You Need to Calm Down” takes on the internet trolls and haters. Using a refreshing and promising sound, Swift reflects on everything that is wrong with social media, while supporting a breathtaking argument. The catchy pop package delivers an important message while blessing our creative senses. No Man’s Land

A beautifully melodious ode to women in history, Frank Turner’s No Man’s Land is a true work of art. Incorporating a traditional folk approach, Turner shares stories that are not being told right now but need to be heard. The eighth studio album by the English singer-songwriter tells the tales of important, inspirational women throughout history who don’t receive the recognition they deserve. One of the most influential musicians in American history, “Sister Rosetta” talks about the unparalleled Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Using some guitar parts from her own back catalog, the heartfelt single is unlike anything we have ever heard before. Encapsulating her work and spirit in a stunningly respectful manner, Turner is treading uncharted territory. Combining his love for history and songwriting, Frank Turner is colliding two worlds that have always been separate from each other. Bringing to life history’s forgotten women, No Man’s Land shifts away popular culture and gives his music a whole new edge. We’re in awe.

The Greenwich Village church they belong to connects two very different couples, Charles and Lily, and Nan and James. Set against the backdrop of a changing New York City, the story follows these two couples through decades of love and friendship, jealousy and understanding, forgiveness and commitment. Surrounded by turbulent times, the couples forge unimaginable paths through their evolving relationships, each struggling with uncertainty, heartbreak, and happiness. A total page-turner!

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

FUEGO-ING IT UP!

Making the city’s indoor venues an ideal escape and he perfect date night spots, FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan headed to JW Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha to get a taste of something that she had never tried before. The verdict is in - get ready to crave all things extraordinary. fact magazine

83

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

J

W Marriott Marquis is what I call ‘the new kid on the block’ when it comes to the hotels in D-Town. With new names popping up every few months, you can only imagine what the new ‘it’ thing is that a restaurant will offer. As I stepped into Feugo, I was welcomed by their staff who immediately ushered me to the best seat in the restaurant. I sat right next to the window and watched the slow Doha summer traffic go by as I enjoyed my sweet vibing drinks. Situated in the heart of the city and right behind City Centre Mall, I couldn’t think of a simpler view to enjoy on a weekday. Beige comfortable seats with the classic brown tables give a welcoming feel and as we settled in, we were served with another round of mocktails; the refreshing strawberry mojito proved to be the most amazing drink to cool down in the humid heat. Just as the conversation started to flow, my first course of starters arrived and whoa, I was not expecting to enjoy my first trip to Feugo so imminently. Among the variety of appetisers served, Salmon Tartare decorated with caviar and pickled onion stood as one of the heroes in the selection. I have yet to taste a combination of ingredients that complement each other so well. The creaminess of the salmon and avocado topped with the crunchiness of pickled onion and the burst of saltiness of the

84

fact magazine

caviar left us craving for more. As we were swooning from experiencing the variety of appetisers, we were presented with the Chilean Bass glazed with date-e-miso sauce with a side of creamed spinach which tasted and smelled as good as it looked. The knife cut through it like it was foam; it was light and fulfilling simultaneously, just the right amount of serving and cooked to perfection. After being done with what I thought was the most divine seafood dish, in came the crusted salmon topped with crunchy panko. It was the subtlety of the taste of salmon coupled with the surprising burst from the sour hint of lemon that made me sit back and close my eyes in pure delight after every bite. Did I want to stop? No. Was I asked to ease it with the fork. Yes, I was. Oh, why, you wonder? Well, the Tomahawk steak was making its grand entry on a plate, freshly cooked to medium rare for my taste buds. Easily the winner of the night for me, the Tomahawk steak with steak fries and asparagus won my palate over. It was as close to buttery melt-in-your-mouth as it could get. The steak was served medium rare which made the meat so soft it was falling apart. Though it was well-seasoned and didn’t need anything to enhance its flavour, the peppercorn glaze gave it the tangy kick of flavour we didn’t know it needed. When all was said and done, I was introduced to my ultimate

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

favourite course of the evening; the mighty desserts that came to steal our hearts. The Tropical Pavlova was the perfect end to what can only be described as a sensory experience. It was a work of art visually and hit all the right notes with the variety of textures and flavours of fruit, meringue, chocolate ice cream and the stunning candy floss. True to its name, it took us to places we had never been to and tasted like summer on a plate. The entire culinary journey was one of a kind. I went to Feugo with absolutely zero research and left with an experience to remember. If you’re looking for a place which serves quality dishes with an edge, you need to visit this restaurant. Relax as the city silently goes by and you enjoy the best of it all. ✤

TALES FROM INDIA

Clearly in love with her biryani and butter chicken, FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan visited Dalchini at Centara West Bay Residences & Suite Doha, to give her favourites another go. Little did she know that the fusion dishes on the menu were going to leave her taste buds in awe. fact magazine

87

• FOODIE CORNER

O

kay, I admit it! Every time someone says Indian food, the Pakistani in me raises her eyebrows slightly. Well, I do come from a country that likes their food a tad bit spicy and I have always found Indian food to be a bit sweeter. Though, that never stops me from going out to try every new Indian restaurant that opens its doors (and they never, ever fail to disappoint). I was visiting Dalchini at Centara West Bay Residences & Suites Doha, just a few months after its opening and having already eaten here previously, I was eager to see if this dining visit lived up to the consistency and quality of previous ones. So, this time, when I stepped into the beautifully decorated green rooms with pinky-purple chairs, I was set to get my regular malai tikka and kebabs. Surprise at first sight would be the right phrase for me. The dishes started pouring in and my mouth was open in utter surprise; a fusion of Indian cuisine in the most modern way possible was presented to me and I was NOT expecting this. My culinary, eye-opening, experience at Dalchini started with a simple pepper chicken dish. I say simple but I mean to say; W H O A. Three different peppers, including pink, black and fresh Peppercorn, were used to marinate and cook this dish and yours truly simply couldn’t believe her luck that she was trying PINK pepper for the first time. I honestly haven’t even heard of that before and here I was, simply diving into this scrumptious dish. When I was presented with the fried fritters, I simply kept munching on them as a side dish and guilty as charged, sent an empty dish back. You know how the good old Saag and white butter is famous, well, Dalchini gave it the ideal glow up; I got to eat saag with Burrata cheese and I don’t know why anyone else has not come up with this combination before. The fish, pan fried to perfection and laid on top of the most delicious tomato chutney was in a league of its own. The bread, popularly known as naan, came in three different kinds; cheese, dates and plain. While the date naan was not to my liking, the cheese naan was mine to hoard. I took every last bite of that beauty and will never apologise for it. Safe to say, the chef was very happy to see empty plates going back to the kitchen… again! The chops were served and I never thought that lamb chops could tear this effortlessly; as I cut through the meat like butter, I fell in love with this restaurant that little bit more every single time I took a bite. Every single item we’d tried off the menu so far was something new and creative. When they told me to be ready for the dessert, I expected some good old gulab jamuns and rosogolla to show up – and they sure strutted in. With a slight twist, of course. The gulab jamuns made a statement with a lemon cream which neutralised the flavour of the dish. To add to this magnificent treat, the rosogolla came with a strawberry sauce which amplified the entire experience. In all my food experiences here in Doha (and life, to be frank), I have never tasted a fusion of Indian cuisine quite as impeccable as this. Two simple, traditional desserts reimagined into a new delight that I couldn’t get enough of. 88

The entire experience at Dalchini was one to remember and it comes highly recommended from my end if you’re looking for something new to try. An experience you can cross off your list once you’ve been there, I’ll be waiting for the thank you notes from you all later! ✤

NEW IN TOWN •

ALL THAT JAZZ The newly launched N’awlins Jazz House had FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan wanting to visit since the doors opened. On an ordinary Wednesday night, she stepped into the Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl Doha, only to find her feet tapping to the pure Jazz vibes. fact magazine

91

• NEW IN TOWN

I

cannot even begin to emphasise the regret I felt when I got learned that there was a new Jazz Club in town and I was going to be missing the grand opening. Somehow, leaving Doha even just for 10 days gives me major FOMO because I feel like I need to know everything that the city has to offer as and when it happens – it is my show-off piece after all! I made my way to N’awlins Jazz House to pick up a rather ordinary week and boy, was that the best choice to make. I entered N’awlins and was taken aback by the muted red tones and lightly lit lounge. Instantly, I felt like this Jazz house and I are going to have an affair that is going to be the talk of the town. With simple paintings on the wall and décor that complimented the whole blues theme so well, I simply got lost because I was so engrossed in the interior. I choose to sit right in the centre of the restaurant because there was a live band who were about to start their set. And, fittingly, there are only two things that I am most passionate about: good food and great music. I asked the bartender to whip me up a sweet mocktail and as I sipped on the first passion fruit concoction, settling into my seat, the music started. The three-piece band was simply amazing. Their first song picked up slowly and I found myself reminiscing all the times we heard jazz music as the score of various movies and even cartoons for that matter made an appearance on their set list. At first, I tried to be lady-like and clapped when the first performance was done but, the band had other plans for me entirely. When the musicians are so engrossed in their art and feeding off each other’s energy, the crowd is bound to go wild. And wild I went! I couldn’t stop hooting, clapping and cheering for the band as the classic setting of the Jazz House felt like a place I was always meant to be. The cosy lounge offered different seating options and huge vases served as pillars. The gold and red tones matched the perfect nostalgic feels of an era gone by and I was the happiest patron ever to have discovered the place. Now, the food here is something that needs to be really appreciated. I have come across very few places who offer good 92

fact magazine

entertainment and food, together. I ordered myself a variety of bites and was pleased to see that they offered dishes that were in keeping with the ambiance of the place. My nachos with shrimp and onion toppings found a soft place in my heart and I quickly downed my entire tray. The mini burgers and classic fish and not so classic spicy chips are worth mentioning as well because the perfect finger food in this environment really makes your experience that more special. The mixologists were creating a storm with the drinks and I could see people giving in and enjoying the entire setting of the Jazz House – for a few moments we were all united with our love of music and simply had the best time as we cheered the band on!

NEW IN TOWN •

For dessert, something that I never say no to, I enjoyed a chocolate and fruit mix with caramelised banana and I was in the sweetest heaven you could imagine. The food portions were brilliant too, and I found myself falling for not just the food but everything that the Jazz House represents. Jazz fix or just a music escape, this is the place to be when you have some serious down time! ✤

hen something becomes larger than life, it’s definitely going to get a few raised brows. Over the course of the past few months, I had been hearing about ESPA at Mondrian Doha from several people and no matter how much I like that hotel, I had to try it to believe the hype! Mondrian Doha is dedicated to making its property your wonderland and I’m not complaining. The tired mama in me headed over to get the newly launched pregnancy massage and I truly cannot remember why I never considered going there before. My journey started as I was welcomed by the receptionist at the spa in a very smartly decorated white lounge. The Mondrian elements of showcasing everything in the most exaggerated way were also very visible here and I wanted to see how they designed their rooms – surely, there was something unique that everyone who came here fell in love with, right? After a quick word with my masseuse, I was ushered to the changing rooms and given my own locker which had a digital password. For someone with a case of clumsiness, I was grateful that I was not carrying a key that I have lost at several other spas in town. As I made my way through the spa to my treatment room, the Alice in me skipped like a happy girl. I came across, what I can only describe, as a pearl tunnel and true to my nature, took a few seconds to pose in front of this unbelievably gorgeous seating area. There are marble mushroom like trees around the showers where you can also find yourself a sauna and a steam room. My treatment room was very simple with an elegant feel to it and I was asked to lie down on a water-bed mat which would allow my masseuse to reach all the pressure points easily without me moving. Now, I know what a journey pregnancy can be and how difficult it is to move at all so I was already in the mind set that this experience was going to be different than the usual massage. I cannot even begin to write about how my entire right side was in knots. I honestly thought that this massage was not for me because I was in so much pain, only to realise that the stress had really been kicking in lately and my body needed the focus it was getting in this massage room. Since the pressure was not up to the masseuse at all, I enjoyed finding new spots that weren’t looked at before. Even though I am an avid spa-goer, I have never experienced relaxation like this. The therapist took her sweet time to give me a massage that I truly needed. The bed underneath took shape where ever weight was applied and I felt like I was floating - excellent for pregnant women. I didn’t know how quickly the one hour went by and I was ushered over to the relaxing room which was nothing short of an Arabian night themed tent. With my rose tea and magazine, I sat and Instagram-ed the heart out of this experience. I feel like I’ve already sent a few clients to Mondrian and convinced some friends to visit just by showing off the unique features of this beautiful spa. My rejuvenated and stress-free body also cannot wait to get back! ✤
