SubmerSibleS
A unique and versatile open-seat submersible, these underwater crafts boast a wide range of applications in the leisure, industrial and military sectors.
orTEgA is currently in the process of showcasing its innovative open-seat submersible, which is available in either a one, two or three-seat configuration. They were inspired by the “Sleeping Beauty”, a motorised submersible canoe built by the British Special Operations Executive during World War II as an underwater vehicle for a single frogman to perform clandestine reconnaissance or attacks against enemy vessels.
Now, working in cooperation with the Royal Dutch Navy, Ortega Submersibles has resurrected and redefined a historically revolutionary vessel using highly advanced naval technology.
The single-seater Mk. 1A is actually the first working prototype, and is currently in final testing stages now. It’s especially made for the offshore industry, but is also available for private leisure use as well. It is a fast, one-person submersible built for treasure hunting, archaeological research and other underwater adventures.
It can be outfitted with many options like built in spotlights, 3D sonar and special BlueHeat heated undergarments for extra long submersed operations.
The Mk. 1A was built with a small footprint in mind – it can be carried by just two people, and a total number of six Mk. 1A’s can easily be fitted in a 20ft container with room to spare.
The Mk. 1B is a two-seater sub suited for exploration, research and port security.
The second operator is also able to operate the boat, or alternatively control a remotely operated underwater vehicle connected to the sub.
The three-seat configuration, the Mk. 1C, is the one that was specifically requested for development by the Royal Dutch Navy for their Special Forces. It is designed to be an undetectable submersible capable of

It’s intended for fast long-range travel either on or under the surface, with the ability to go up river streams. The Mk. 1C is also compatible with Low Altitude Parachute Extraction Systems, underwater submarine launches or just under slung from a helicopter.

Powered by two high-power electric motors and fully equipped with a trimming tank, on-board breathing apparatus and HUD navigation system, each vessel can also have Magnetometers, Sonar, FLIR, extra air supply (closed loop rebreathers) or an extended cargo hold of up to 450 litres. All the on-board equipment supports dive depths of up to 95m/310ft, and their honeycomb structures are filled with air for buoyancy.
Can you take one home now? Well… no, they haven’t actually gone into production yet. However, they are in the final prototype testing stage, and they are taking orders with deliveries expected in the first months of this year, so if you want one, get in touch with them through their website, www.ortega-submersibles.com.
These submersibles were created in cooperation with the Dutch Special Forces.
