IN HONOR OF EARTH DAY BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO Board Certified Dermatologist, Tierra Santa Healing House My tip of the month is to choose a physical sunscreen versus a chemical sunscreen. CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS Rely on various chemicals such as Avobenzone and Helioplex, which absorb and scatter UV rays rather than block them. This leaves your skin only partially protected. Chemicals found in these sunscreens are a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis and can exacerbate irritated and sensitive skin. Must be applied 30 minutes prior to sun exposure for effectiveness.

Eucalyptus has been used by indigenous people for centuries, mainly for its antiinflammatory and decongestant properties. At Faena’s Tierra Santa Healing House, our certified therapists use eucalyptus during aromatherapy, which helps open up the pores, revitalize the skin and clear breathing passages during inhalation. Its antiseptic and stimulating qualities help rid colds or nasal infections while recharging your energy.

Tierra Santa’s unique healing arts treatments were designed by a team of wellness collaborators, including Carlos Gomez, a Mexican-born shaman who studied ancient healing techniques with tribes and healers from Latin America and India. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa Healing House at 4381 for further information or reservations.

WELCOMING THE PINK MOON According to the Native American culture, each month’s moon has a particular name. For April, it’s the “Pink Moon,” a name that reflects the arrival of spring and the blooming of flowers. Among the many in bloom is the wild ground phlox. This particular species of the Polemoniaceae family comes to life during spring, displaying a hue of pink so intense that some think reflects on the Moon’s surface. Full moons are also said to recharge your energy and clean chakras, but in order to receive the full benefits of it, we recommend the following: -Take a 20 to 40-minute bath with salts (in this case, we recommend Pink Hamalayan salts). -Dress comfortably in white and head to the

beach, countryside or a place close to nature if possible. Otherwise, find a quiet, comfortable place with a view to the moon. -If you have a meditation practice, follow it. Otherwise, disconnect yourself from any technology and distractions for at least two hours, setting an intention while looking at the sky, repeating it and embracing the power of the universe. -Remove all jewelry and crystals, spraying them with a lavender oil and water infusion— the moon will also recharge them and they will serve as amulets for protection.

In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa Healing House at 4381 for further information or treatment reservations.

PHYSICAL SUNSCREENS Commonly referred to as sunblocks, they form a complete barrier against the sun’s harmful rays, offering a stronger protection. Sunblocks contain ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which are natural ingredients and are nonirritating to the skin. Physical blockers start protecting you as soon as you apply them. Further, not only are physical sunscreens better for you, they are also better for the environment. When chemical sunscreens are transferred from your skin to the ocean, the chemicals block the sunrays and photosynthesis, which in turn damages marine life, such as coral reefs. Keep in mind: we no longer have to settle for thick and unpleasant versions. Physical sunscreens have come a long way as several companies have developed variations that contain micronized ingredients, making physical sunscreens much more cosmetically elegant. Happy Earth Day!

In Miami, we’re turning up the heat on Easter Sunday with our delicious Sunday Asado Brunch—an open-fire barbecue and traditional Argentine social event that is so much more than just a meal. The asado marks a time when family and friends come together to share good wine, great food and even better conversation. While the asador (chef) prepares the meal over a wood-fired grill, young and old have an unhurried afternoon to spend quality time together. Gather your family this Easter at Los Fuegos for a mouthwatering multicourse feast of oven-baked empanadas, fresh salads and grilled entrees from ribeye to flakey fish, heaps of organic vegetables and a family-style dessert trio. After brunch, there’s family fun for all ages, including an Easter Egg Hunt, face painting, a special Magique show where guests learn to perform magic tricks, and entertainment and games at Faena Play all served with a side of joyful celebration.

Sunday Sessions at Faena Forum Sunday Sessions at Faena Forum We are continuously expanding our cross-disciplinary program throughout the District, focusing on creating one-of-a-kind cultural experiences that engage the community, spur creativity and elevate the spirit. Faena Forum kicks off its new Forum Sunday Sessions this May with ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces (art-collective assume vivid astro focus site-specific immersive disco roller rink) and Paperwater, the product of two talented Miami-based music duo. ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces is a sitespecific installation for revelry, participation, transformation, and celebration—the embodiment of Faena Art’s values and cultural manifesto.

It’s a neo-disco roller rink—an all-encompassing fantasia of music, movement, lights, dance, and explosive color that commemorates the utopian ideals of the 60s and 70s, exemplifying Faena’s commitment to promoting participatory and interactive art experiences. TOBA KHEDOORI AT PAMM There’s no doubt that Miami has become a cultural engine, powered by several major institutions (including that of Faena District). It’s through this intellectual synergy among art organizations that locals have benefited from the visit of international artists; later this month, the PAMM inaugurates a special exhibition by Toba Khedoori, showcasing the last 15 years of her work. The Sydney-born, LA-based artist specializes in the use of negative space on a large scale, turning everyday items into decontextualized objects, giving new meaning to the banal, inviting the viewer to slow down and explore ordinariness.

Comprising a wide array of multimedia installations, films and documentaries usually shown in cinemas, as well as performances, the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement is a one of a kind hybrid situated somewhere between a cinema festival, a constellation of solo exhibitions and a site for research and experimentation. With this format, artists are invited to push the boundaries of traditional media. The originality of the new

BIM resides in the fact that it consists exclusively of works commissioned and produced for the occasion, with no specific curatorial theme to respond to. This distinguishes the BIM from the usual biennial format and positions it as a post-curatorial event, leaving the artists a carte blanche to shape their own discourse while questioning the status of the curator. The Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement seeks to investigate new exhibition models

and formats by building a show as a choir, bringing together polyphonic voices to offer a window into contemporaneity. The contemplation of sakura: a tradition that reminds us to blossom Hanami, a Japanese tradition that resembles pure fantasy, is celebrated during the cherry blossom season.

Each January, the Japanese cherry trees blossom in waves in Okinawa, making their way through Kyoto and Tokyo, finally arriving in Hokkaido around March. The sakura season crosses the archipelago from the south to the north, and it takes along with it the ancient practice of hanami, that refers to the habit of picnicking beneath a blossoming cherry tree. Originally limited to the imperial court’s elite, hanami made its way to the samurai society and by the Edo period it had also reached common people. During their short blooming period, the petals of the sakura fall as white foam onto avenues and parks, and people gather beneath them to celebrate their beauty. Families, groups of friends, labourers, children -and even the homeless can be seen in Tokyo’s Ueno Park (one of the locals’ favourite spots), in full contemplation of this environmental treasure. The importance of hanami is the (almost forgotten) commotion that arises from meticulous observation. People make their way to the appointment fully aware of the metaphysical relationship that exists between the impermanent beauty of the trees and human existence. When the sun sets,

hundreds of youngsters begin to take flash photographs of the branches in contrast with the surrounding blackness, which they then immediately upload to the internet to eagerly share the aesthetic experience, ad infinitum. During the sakura season, contemplation becomes conservation. The trees will always be healthy because Japan considers beauty to be an end in and of itself, and nobody considers it odd when a citizen stops what he’s doing to take a sakura branch and inhale their barely perceptible aroma. Thus the importance of botanical appreciation is also a political act; a combination of cultural information and the environment. For the Japanese, the season of cherry blossoms is appropriately understood as the transience of human life. Hanami is one of the few popular celebrations that retains its innocence and is surely the most aesthetic and oneiric of communal experiences. By strengthening our environmental values, sakura is also a reminder that we are other peoples’ environment. We are the symbiosis of our surrounding. And whoever understands hanami at some point in their lives will realise that, beyond the impermanence of the white and pink foam, the experience is perpetual.

C’est Rouge! Every weekend from Thursday to Saturday, our Theater comes to life with C’est Rouge!, a cabaret-style performance full of comedy and sensuality. With a cast of international stars, the show has an impressive lineup of acrobats, thespians and artists that entertain the audience with their unique acts. But what are they doing during their free time? We decided to follow them during their rest days, and this is what we found.

Cherry Picking On the third floor of Faena Hotel Miami Beach, you will find Tierra Santa Healing House, a unique temple of wellness for guests to relax and recover, but also home to one of our favorite features: the Spa Boutique. At Tierra Santa Boutique we showcase handpicked products from around the world, with a wide selection of fashion products, including one of our favorite designers and collaborators: Carolina K. To understand more about the brand and the process that goes into each of the pieces, we interviewed Carolina Kleinman, the brains behind this project. What is your background? How did you start working with fashion? I grew up spending a lot of time at my mom and aunt´s clothing store, playing with rolls of fabric; always loved to be surrounded by that world. Designing was something I did naturally. I always had new fashion ideas. When I was 15, I created my first swimsuit collection. What was your first big project? At age 21, I moved to Los Angeles and studied fashion, acting and music, which are my other passions. I started as a stylist for some celebrities, musicians, actors and other people I admire. I also did private labels for big brands and got to travel the world for different projects. I opened my first retail store in New York while living in Mexico, and then decided to move to Miami and set up our studio here. I would say that all of our collaborations with Faena, which started with Faena Hotel Buenos Aires and expanded to Faena Hotel Miami Beach, has been some of the most important and rewarding experiences since starting Carolina K.

What’s the inspiration behind your designs? The artisans and the diverse cultures I’ve met in my travels have been my greatest inspiration from the very beginning. I live through the creative process of each collection; whether I’m traveling within Mexico to Oaxaca or Chiapas, or to Cusco in Peru, I like to spend real time with the artisans, go to their homes, eat at their tables. I even take my husband and kids to have the full experience with me. I first research and study what I want to focus on for the new collection, and then travel and spend time with the people who are actually helping me bring those visions to life. Are the indigenous communities involved in the creative process? Very much. They are the soul of the brand, and without them Caro K would not have a true identity. Many of our designs, from the Oaxacan crochet tops and dresses to the round ottomans of our Home Collection, are made and inspired by Mexican artisans. Most of our knits and leather goods are made in Peru, and our prints are made in India. Every Carolina K piece we designed for Faena has been made in collaboration with authentic artisans. How does Miami influence your work? Every season I try to find a new native bird that represents freedom and uniqueness, and here flamingos will be the stars. We are launching our first resort swimsuit collection, inspired by Miami.

The Singing Beauty Victoria Blue

FAENA JOURNAL

This Cuban-Puerto Rican bombshell is proof that dreams do come true; from a very young age, Victoria liked to sing all over her house (including the bathroom, where there are always great acoustics). With the encouragement of her father and brothers, all of whom are musicians, she started a family band while signing up for auditions, where she performed her original songs. She hasn’t stopped since and even when she’s relaxing, about to hop in a bubble bath, she makes time to practice the C’est Rouge! repertoire.

Born in Madrid and Buenos Aires (in the neighborhood of La Boca, the birthplace of Tango, as Armando likes to say), this husband-andwife act is not only sensual but also very melancholic, a highlight of Argentine traditions in Miami. The couple arrived in the city escaping the cold weather of NYC and Boston, light on luggage and full of experience. It’s why you can spot them on the beach, passionately working on their tan, when they’re not on stage stirring the emotions of those who attend C’est Rouge!

he realized that he was in the midst of documenting history. The band was on the brink of international stardom the night the photograph was taken. Harry recounted, “That picture behind me is iconic because of who they are, but also that was the night they were told I Want to Hold Your Hand was #1 in America. It was also the night they were told they were going to be on the Ed Sullivan Show, which meant they were coming to America— and I was going with them.” Celebrating in the hotel room, Harry suggested to the band that they recreate a pillow fight that they had earlier that week. They were reluctant at first—fearing they would look childish—but ultimately Harry

convinced them. The result was a dynamic image that captured a frozen moment of youthful euphoria, standing out from the usual line-up shots of the band. “If there was a breakthrough moment, that was it,” Harry reminisced. That night, Harry developed the roll of film in the hotel bathroom, innocent at the time to the significance the image would later hold. “To me a good picture can never happen again, it’s a glimpse and gone forever. The Beatles will never do the pillow fight over. That’s my idea of photography.” For more information about Faena Rose, contact rosemembership@faena.com
