Summer Staycation Miami heats up in the summer, but insiders know the best way to cool down is at Faena Hotel Miami Beach.
FATHER’S DAY EXPERIENCE
"I am honored to have been named to Fast Company’s list of the most creative people in business and to join a group of individuals who work each day to change and improve our world", said Faena. "I have always believed that if you do what you love and it comes from the heart, anything is possible."
Offering an exclusive discount on our best available rate, you can wake up to a complimentary American breakfast every morning on our alfresco poolside Veranda before heading down to our Beach Club—100,000 square feet of private powder-sand paradise. Catch up on your summer reading under a candy-striped umbrella to a lullaby of soft crashing waves. While you take a refreshing dip in the turquoise sea, your beach butler will flawlessly shine your sunglasses and place a chilled water and sunscreen by your chaise lounge. When returning to relax, he’ll gently wash the sand from your feet with fresh water before you lie back down. From the beach, head to your private poolside cabana outfitted with its own minibar and TV for ultimate relaxation. Enjoy a bottle of sparkling wine on ice and delicious snacks curated by our talented team of chefs while our dedicated Pool butlers provide top-notch service, all of which will help you understand why Condé Nast Traveler named Faena one of the ten most "over-the-top" hotel pool experiences in the world.
When your skin is sufficiently sun-kissed, head to Tierra Santa Healing House and enjoy complimentary access to the Wet Spa and 15% off all treatments. The healing hammam expedition begins with a waterfall shower to cool you down before relaxing on a heated gobek tasi made of Amazonite stone. Step into the herbal steam room where scents of peppermint and eucalyptus cleanse your lungs. Then move onto the wet scrub and sauna, before culminating your wellness journey in the refreshing ice room. Choose from a range of restorative rituals and therapies on our spa menu. Learned from ancient cultures to relieve deep-seated tension, the Tree of Life Vibrations treatment uses a combination of oils and Brazilian rose stones which are massaged into the spine, while the equally rejuvenating Tierra Santa Masaje de Coco treatment is a profoundly nourishing experience that takes advantage of the curative properties of warm virgin coconut oil. End the day with one of Faena’s incredible gastronomic adventures. Feel transported to Argentina with a mouthwatering asado (barbecue) complete with empanadas, grilled entrees, and organic vegetables prepared over an open fire at Los Fuegos restaurant from celebrated South American chef Francis Mallmann. Or tantalize your taste buds with crudo specialties at James Beard Foundation award-winning chef Paul Qui’s Pao restaurant with dishes like Toro—seared fatty tuna belly with tomato, kaffir lime, pickled ginger, and tare. Post-dinner, enjoy a handcrafted cocktail overlooking the ocean in the cool night breeze to understand why nobody in Miami complains of the weather. For reservations, dial 305 535 4697 or email reservations-miamibeach@faena.com
Celebrate the men in your life with a full Father’s Day Experience. Start by spoiling him with a Sacred Warrior treatment at Tierra Santa Healing House. This deep muscle-melting massage will relieve all tension and tightness, while warm herbal indigo poultices and rare lapis lazuli from Chile target key pressure points. Indulge him further with a mouthwatering feast of Argentine cuisine at Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann and an entire afternoon lounging with the family, free from distractions and obligation. This is one barbecue where dad isn’t expected to do the grilling. He’ll finally get to sit back and relax as our skilled asador (chef) prepares a multi-course meal of wood-oven empanadas, slow-cooked rib eye, wild salmon, suckling pig, and skewers of organic vegetables followed by a melt-inyour-mouth flan. If a decadent dinner is more his style, join us for an Asian-inspired epicurean evening at star chef Paul Qui’s restaurant Pao. Here, he can sip on custom handcrafted cocktails while enjoying delights from a prix-fixe summer menu featuring signature items like Octopus Aguachile and East Side King Fried Chicken with new delectable dishes including fresh Florida snapper and tender aged beef. To top off the perfect Father’s Day outing, Faena is gifting all fathers with a complimentary hand-rolled cigar he can enjoy at our poolside Veranda or on Pao’s openair terrace.

From communal dinners based on Japanese omakase traditions and Sundown Socials where small bites are enjoyed on the restaurant’s oceanfront terrace, to crudo classes and Chef Collectives, Pao is brimming with inventive flavors and entertaining ways to escape the summer temperatures. James Beard award-winning chef Paul Qui introduces an irresistible Summer Tasting Menu. The four-course, prix-fixe menu is available for $55 per person (plus taxes and service charge) every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday through the end of July. Qui is known for innovatively fusing flavors from cuisines as varied as Filipino, Spanish, Japanese and French and this new epicurean adventure does not disappoint. His expertise is given its full chance to shine when paired with ingredients sourced from Miami’s finest local purveyors. Delve into the first course with a choice of Octopus Aguachile seasoned with tomatillo, Serrano chili, and green apple, or Kinilaw— starring cobia, a heart of palm, coconut milk, red onion and cilantro. The second step showcases Qui’s famous East Side King Fried Chicken served with sweet chili sauce, roasted banana ketchup and jalapeño. The entrées cater to carnivores and pescatarians alike with an option of two new dishes to the Pao menu: an Aged Beef Striploin with black garlic and charred onion and fresh Florida snapper flavored with cilantro and chili “Patis,” and served with a side of garlic-ginger rice. A decadent finale offers a choice of whipped white chocolate ganache with yuzu sake sorbet, Thai basil, and kaffir lime meringue or a deli-
cious “Dirt Cup” of cheesecake pudding, dried chocolate mousse, passion fruit, preserved rose and pistachio to round out the menu. Both critics and diners celebrate Pao’s original dishes. Eater Miami named it ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in 2016 and customers back up the accolade saying it’s a blend of flavors like nothing they’ve ever tasted before. To add some heat to the summer, Paul Qui will welcome New York-based chef Daniel Burns for a Chef Collective experience on July 25 at 7:00 pm. As the former head of Luksus, a Michelin-starred seasonal tasting menu restaurant, and the current owner of Tørst, a popular craft beer bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Burns is sure to add a hoppy explosion of flavor to the dishes at Pao. When the August heat becomes too much to bear, escape to Faena for an Art of Crudo Class with Chef Qui, where guests learn the art of preparing the perfect crudo dishes from around the world including ceviche, sashimi, carpaccio, and more. Cool off with freshly muddled cocktails while Pao’s chefs walk you through ingredient preparations and cooking techniques such as slicing, marinating and curing. The most difficult part of the class? Deciding which dish you like best. For a full listing of Pao’s summer events, please visit our website. In Japan, there is a culinary tradition of ordering omakase, a word that translates to respectfully leaving another to decide what is best, or in gastronomy terms, a chef’s selection. Diners can expect an innovative and surprising variety of dishes that showcase the chef’s creative expression. On June 20, Chef Paul Qui will offer a similar sybaritic adventure of Japanese-inspired dishes that draw on his impressive capacity for pairing unusual flavors with the skill of a real artist. His omakase multi-course feast is an experience that offers the best of his signature small plates paired with spontaneous sushi creations. The evening is designed to bring together food lovers to commune at one large table, sharing an unforgettable meal where each course is more intriguing than the next.
THE SINGAPORE SLING Available in Sunbar & Pool and Beach Created by Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel, Singapore in the early 20th century, The Singapore Sling became an enduring classic. With a strong pour of Plymouth Gin, a robust dash of Cherry Heering, and Cointreau Benedictin mixed with pineapple, lime, grenadine and Angostura Bitters, the long drink is timeless for a reason. AS THEY FALL Available in Pao by Paul Qui As They Fall is a stirred cocktail akin to a traditional martini with Grey Goose Vodka, Tozai Plum Sake, and Kuromitsu, wafting subtle notes of flowers and citrus to the nose with a crisp and clean finish on the palate.

Pao Sizzles for Summer
Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Macy Gray will deliver an intimate performance at Faena Theater on June 2nd. Although fans will hear from her incredible repertoire of prize-winning tracks, including favorites “I Try” and “Do Something,” the true treat is a front-row seat to Gray’s emergence as a jazz performer. She will perform, for one of the very first times, songs from her debut live Jazz album “Stripped.” Although a live album may appear to be a new avenue for the artist, it is a return to her roots. Gray’s incredible musical career began in this genre; she started composing music in college, and later learned how to make use of her distinctive raspy voice and captivate audiences with her soulful style when she began singing at jazz cafés across Los Angeles. It was these first performances that first caught the attention of Atlantic Records. “In pop, it’s verse, chorus, verse, chorus. The chorus has to be really big. Then you do a bridge. You gotta put an 808 in there. In jazz, you do whatever you want,” Gray explained to Vogue. “In jazz, no one cares what the person looks like. They can be 200 years old, 300 pounds, bad acne—people still go see them.” Gray then went on to record five studio albums before “Stripped” while working with the most talented producers and artists in the industry. Her singles consistently topped the charts, starting with a Grammy for “I Try” in 2001. She also appeared in films and on TV, quickly making her a household name. “Stripped,” however, is a departure from the industry that made Gray a star. Record company Chesky Labels took a purist approach to recording the album and used just one microphone for the entire recording process resulting in a very natural sound. There are no tweaks or mixes, so listeners can indulge in all the glory that is Gray’s raw and ravenous gift. Despite the quality of the new album, nothing will compare to a live Macy Gray performance.

Cryo Facials Biologique Recherché Tierra Santa Healing House offers advanced beauty treatments that are a regenerative remedy for too much summer sun.
CHECKING YOUR SKIN BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO BOARD CERTIFIED DERMATOLOGIST, TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE Summer is here—that time of year when the sunshine is stronger than ever and the moment to take extra-care of your skin. This includes checking it for melanomas, mutations in color, size and shape that could lead to potential cancer. Not only do I recommend an annual skin exam by a Board Certified Dermatologist, I suggest monthly self-exams at home. Simply stand in front of a full-length mirror and examine your skin head to toe. Can't look at the back of your legs or your back? Purchase a large hand mirror to help. Knowing the ABCDs of melanoma could save your life: A=Asymmetry: half does not match the other half. B=Border: an irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border.C= Color: varied color or various shades of color from one area to another. D=Diameter or Difference: diameter larger than 6 mm (size of a pencil eraser) can signify a higher risk of melanoma. Further, if the lesion is different (the “ugly duckling") than any other lesion, this should serve as a possible warning sign. With these simple guidelines, you can help promote early detection and be well on your way to maintaining healthy skin.

MOVE OF THE MONTH SITALI: THE COOLING BREATH OF SUMMER. BY TIM FELDMAN, YOGA DIRECTOR OF MIAMI LIFE CENTER If you find yourself melting in the summer heat, try this ancient yogic breathing technique to lessen the sweltering effect of the weather and get the added benefit of relaxing your mind. It is inevitable that we overheat sometimes when the sun rises and the seasons change. It is equally inevitable that daily life raises our emotional heat from time to time. It is at these times that we need a go-to technique to resettle our bodies and minds into a state of comfort and clarity. Sitali Pranayama, translated as “cooling flow”, was developed by the ancient indian Rishis and has been used by yogis for centuries. if you're overheated, try this: - Find a comfortable place and sit in a comfortable position where your spine is straight, preferably not leaning against a wall. - Close your eyes and begin with a few deep breaths to increase your focus on your body and breath. Then open your mouth and stick your tongue out. - Try forming a U-shape with your tongue, curling the tongue like a taco lengthwise (or if this doesn’t work for you, there is no technique that will make it work. It’s a genetic ability so if the tongue doesn’t curl then just lightly stick your tongue out and keep it relaxed and flat on your lower lip). - Moisten your tongue and begin to inhale slow and long feeling the air cooling the whole surface of your tongue. - Allow your ribcage and lungs to fill up and rise fully. Repeat on the exhale, empty out your lungs and let the ribcage slowly return to its relaxed position. - Repeat this series of inhalation and exhalation with the Sitali tongue position for about 3-5 minutes. - Then, return to your normal breath while closing your eyes, perhaps lying down on your back for a minute or two. As you get familiar with this practice you can increase the time slowly until you reach all the way up to 10 minutes or whenever you feel nicely cool and mentally calm. Enjoy your summer!
Miami Life Center offers open classes at Tierra Santa Studio Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 am. Drop-in classes are $25 per person.

SUMMER FILM CYCLE
Sunday Sessions To kick off the summer season, Faena Art will host its first Sunday Session on June 11th, an interactive event where vibrant culture meets classic roller-skating inside of Faena District’s 43,000 square-foot Faena Forum. The core mission of Faena is to serve as a platform for cultural expression and a collective space for the local community. To make this mission come to life, we’ve created a robust year-round calendar of diverse programming with events happening habitually throughout the District. Once a month, this pop-up will take over the OMA-designed building, offering guests of all ages a chance to groove into the new week while roller- dancing over a work of art (the skating arena is a work created by Brazilian duo assume vivid astro focus) to the beats of Miami-based DJs, Paperwater. From midday to 10:00 pm, the event will be open to the public and offer a menu of food and drinks created by our in-house culinary geniuses. No need to bring your skates—we’ve got plenty for you and your friends.

In charge of the entertainment is a fantastic roster of artists and musicians that will create a dreamlike environment inside Miami Beach’s most radical building. Although you’ll probably meet them in person when you come to skate, here’s a snapshot of who they are: AVAF (ASSUME VIVID ASTRO FOCUS): The brainchild of Brazilian-born, New York-based artist Eli Sudbrack, this collective of artists from around the world has produced incredible works of art by tapping into the talent of creators such as Kenny Scharf, Renata Abbade, JK5 and Black Meteoric Star, to name a few. Based between New York and Paris, AVAF’s work is part of the permanent collection of MoMa NYC and the Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawing Collection. PAPERWATER: Composed by Eddy Samy (DJ, artist, graphic designer) and Daygee Kwia (DJ, architect, producer) Paperwater is the result of a friendship that started in high school many years ago. With Haitian and Liberian heritage, respectively, the duo reconnected in Miami after earning their college degrees. The result: an eclectic performance in which their beats are infused with Caribbean and African sounds, creating tunes that elevate the spirit and get the feet moving.
Films are an important pillar of our cultural endeavors; it’s why we created an intimate cinema within Faena Hotel, and also the reason behind events such as the recent Biennial of Moving Images, an exhibition that brought works and installations by 28 artists from around the world to our District. Underlining our commitment to promoting the arts in Miami and to further grow our visual art programming, we’ve decided to bring back our monthly cinema cycles just in time for summer, a series curated by Jaie Laplante (director of programming of the Miami Film Festival). We kicked off the agenda with plenty European flair; on Thursday, May 4th, we screened The Death of Louis XIV, followed by an exclusive Q&A with director Albert Serra. And on May 28th we showed another piece from the Old Continent. Directed by Olivier Babinet, Swagger is a documentary that tells the story of banlieues (housing projects) outside Paris, offering a refreshing counter-perspective on French minorities. The film was presented in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States and Unifrance. And to enjoy the summer nights in full swing, we’ve planned an unmissable 4-film lineup for the month of June.

Paternity; a force co-creating reality in the world The responsibility of each parent is proportional to the beauty of exercising it. A mother is the first bond human beings make with the universe. She’s the vehicle of irruption into the world, and the figure of the father presents some other complexities, each of them of a very different nature than those of the mother. The ideas we have about what constitutes motherhood, or parenthood, have changed throughout history. These ideas have served various purposes, and continue to change in a constant process of transformation. In matriarchal, tribal societies, the figure of the father might be shared or delegated according to the role that men might play in the lives of the young. Similarly, when a mother is missing, the community welcomes the children and provides them a place. The modern view of the nuclear family—with a core constituted by the triad mother, father, and child—was born from the economic need, as distinguishing paternity becomes necessary only when the inheritance, or the imminent division, of private property, is at stake. The surname, rather than the perpetuation of a genealogy, seeks from the outset to function as a legal amulet meant to legitimize the transmission of assets accumulated by the father. Beyond the economic question, our belief systems determine types of paternity and maternity that are exercised. Judeo-Christian culture is a patriarchal culture because it places the absolute authority of the theological order on the supreme figure of the father god, the Jewish YHWH, who becomes a merciful father in the New Testament. The culture also highlights the role of Joseph, the father of Jesus, to strengthen the archetype of the father as provider and head of the family, even among the poorest.
For the Greeks, the paternal gods are a latent threat from the beginning of time, and one which must be appeased or fought. Cronos the Titan dethrones his father Uranus (the sky) by castrating him and then devouring his own children, Rhea, Hades, and Poseidon. Finally, he’s himself dethroned by his cunning son Zeus. The Greek gods are not “model parents” like those we see in today’s advertising. They’re jealous of their children, and they have open preferences for some over others. In Greek literature, there can be exceptions to this fact. One of the earliest treatises on ethics, Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics has been read for centuries as a sobering speech from parents to children about virtue, happiness, and immortality (even though Aristotle’s real nexus with Nicomachus is still disputed even to this day). This seems to constitute the role of the father, even beyond that of provider: being a kind of example, or mirror of the future, and to provide a model of behavior for the next generation. If we accept the validity of this premise, we can think that in reality all men and women are fathers and mothers (voluntarily or not) of the children who live near us: it’s our actions rather than our words that show them how the world works, how to develop within it, and how do we deal with anguish and fear. In this sense, we all have a very specific responsibility to the future of society through models of upbringing that take the psycho-affective needs of any child out of the small bubble of the family nucleus, and so that everyone can learn from everyone else. NICOMACHEAN ETHICS Aristotle's best-known work on ethics consists of ten books and is understood to be based on notes from his lectures at the Lyceum. The title is often assumed to refer to his son Nicomachus, to whom the work was dedicated or who may have edited it (although his age at the time of the printing makes this less likely). Alternatively, the work may have been dedicated to his father, who was also called Nicomachus. The theme is a Socratic question previously explored in the works of Plato, Aristotle's friend and teacher; how should men best live.
