Sundown Social Hour at Pao

There’s no place to enjoy the sunny days and starry nights of summer like Sundown Social Hour. This evening soirée series, which kicked off on June 21st, pairs some of Miami’s best food, music and cocktails with ocean views on Pao by Paul Qui’s spacious terrace.

Pao is the brainchild of Top Chef winner and restaurateur Paul Qui, whose modern Asian cuisine has earned him a James Beard Foundation Award. Happening every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30 pm- 8:30 pm all summer long, the Sundown Social Hour is a lively place to mix and mingle with the who’s who of Miami, or just catch up with some old friends. Taking a page from Qui’s wildly popular East Side King Food Truck in Austin, Texas—an eatery inspired by everything from rock music to Asian culture—the Socials offer a menu of specially-priced libations and Japanese

inspired small plates, featuring a combination of cold dishes and innovative made-to-order items crafted by Pao’s kitchen. Whether you’re treating yourself to exotic elixirs, enjoying one of Qui’s expertly-executed dishes, or dancing the night away to a rotating cast of DJs and live musical acts, a Sundown Social Hour can turn any ordinary evening into a memorable celebration. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for further information. Reservations can be made at 786 655 5600.

CHEF COLLECTIVE WITH DANIEL BURNS New York-based Chef Daniel Burns is turning up the heat up in Pao’s kitchen alongside Chef Paul Qui for a summer edition of Faena’s Chef Collective series on July 25th at 7:00 pm. Burns, the former owner of Luksus—the first restaurant ever to earn a Michelin star without offering a wine or liquor menu—is full of unpredictable surprises. He is a mathematician turned chef and is currently the owner of Tørst in Brooklyn, where he turns beer into an art form, pairing a wide-range of suds with a menu of elevated bar food and innovative sharing plates. Adding his gastronomic signature to an exciting collaboration, it will be intriguing to experience how Burns and Qui creatively blend their culinary pedigrees in both eastern and western cuisines.

As part of the mission to maintain culture at the heart of Faena District, Faena Forum hosted Second Sundays on June 11th to celebrate the communities of Miami Beach. To kick off the first edition of Second Sundays, Faena Miami Beach presented ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces, an immersive, participatory and site-specific art installation created by contemporary artist duo assume vivid astro focus (avaf). Held at Faena Forum—the OMA-designed cultural centerpiece of Faena District Miami Beach—the event was free and open to the public and welcomed over 1,300 adults and children who came to enjoy the roller dancing, art, video projections and music. This first edition featured performances by renowned Miami performance artist duo the TM Sisters with the Miami Quad Squad and the musical experience was curated by Paperwater. The event included a robust line-up of special guest DJs and performers including Paperwater, Coffinbeats, Bonnie Beats, Voila Snow, JP Abascal and Wet Paper B2B, who activated the rink throughout the day. Alan Faena explained, “In Buenos Aires and in Miami Beach, we have redefined the way we live in cities by building a strong community anchored in art and culture. The Forum is envisioned as a space for a multiplicity of voices and is the heart of the Faena District Miami Beach. I am proud to offer Miami a new environment for cultural experiences that encourages experimentation and creativity across fields.” Curated by Ximena Caminos, Artistic Direc-

tor and Chair of Faena Art, the participatory installation ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces establishes a new platform for social interaction. Ximena remarked, “We have reimagined the roller dancing rink for the interior of the Faena Forum as a means of creating connectivity and interaction, to celebrate community, to open our doors for everyone to participate, play, dance, and to break down the barriers in our city.” assume vivid astro focus was commissioned to create a neo-disco roller rink in 2014 for the Faena Art Center Buenos Aires. This rink was reimagined in 2015 for the Faena Beach in Miami Beach and is now reconceived by avaf to take over the entirety of Faena Forum. assume vivid astro focus first explored the concept of the roller rink as an interactive installation with Public Art Fund in Central Park, New York City in 2004 as part of the Whitney Biennial. That original iteration of the project was intended as an homage to the Skate Circle, a community of roller dancers in Central Park that have been a part of New York City’s identity for years and part of the fabric of its cultural life. Now, for Faena Miami Beach, avaf moves this public project indoors to create a participatory space for celebration that exists somewhere between multiple genres including music, dance, art and video and repurposes the art viewing space as an arena

for physical activity and community gathering. Likening their work to music, avaf has said, “It’s the medium that’s most suitable for reaching the viewer and transmitting ideas. The way it does so is very corporeal and entices an immediate and shareable reaction.” Daygee Kwia and Eddy Samy from Paperwater have said, “We are honored to collaborate with Faena Art and avaf as performers and curators of the musical experience for the roller dancing rink. We look forward to enhancing this dialogue by bringing together other local and diverse creatives to amplify the collaboration.” Second Sundays continues through the summer on July 9th and August 13th from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Admission is free and open to the public. Roller skates will be provided to attendees. For more information visit www.faena.com or www.faenaart.org. JUL

The Miami native, who first discovered her love of singing at the tender age of two, has cultivated her craft in the intervening 19 years, leading her to the opulent Living Room stage at Faena Miami Beach. Drawing inspiration from some of the iconic chanteuses of the 20th century, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Etta James, Mayor has created her own soulful sound that earned her a standing ovation and praise from the judges on America’s Got Talent. Known as “The Cuban Adele,” Mayor’s rich voice and captivating stage presence have turned her into one of the most buzzed-about vocal artists in recent history, but despite her rapid ascent, she’s staying true to her roots by showcasing her awe-inspiring talent at venues throughout her hometown, including weekly performances in the heart of Miami Beach's live music scene: Faena's Living Room.

The self-described “soul singer with a little Latin spice” is bringing her voice to The Living Room for a Tuesday night concert series, where guests can experience her immense talent firsthand. While Mayor’s gift for commanding a stage is earning her acclaim around the world, she’s dedicated to maintaining the relationships that got her where she is today. Calling Faena “family,” Mayor cites the hotel’s cosmopolitan clientele and stunning venues as the impetus to dedicate her precious spare time to these intimate shows. “I get to perform in front of people who are passionate about art and culture,” says Mayor. “I feel very fortunate.”

Treat yourself to the gift of relaxation FAENA FILM CLUB Four great women artists are in the spotlight this month at the Faena's Screening Room, in a cinema cycle of new and classic films, programmed by guest curator Jaie Laplante, Director of Programming of the Miami Film Festival. Larger-than-life polaroid portraits of Beat poets, Harvard scholars and rock stars have been Elsa Dorfman's niche for decades and Oscar-winner Errol Morris takes a look at her career in The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman's Portrait Photography. Salma Hayek has never been better than in her star turn as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in Julie Taymor's Frida. A chance purchase at a Chicago garage sale exhumes one of the great unknown photographers of the past century, in the Oscar-nominated Finding Vivian Maier. And the earthy, passionate choreography of the late German choreographer Pina Bausch is captured in Wim Wenders' beautiful and ageless documentary, Pina.

The fascinating, illustrated story of fireworks These 18th century illustrations exquisitely narrate the allegorical story of firework displays in Europe. Like many of history’s great discoveries, fireworks were created by accident. In China, around 2,200 years ago, the first one was a stalk of bamboo that exploded suddenly in a fire. The sound was so loud that the Chinese decided to use it to keep mountain men and evil spirits at bay. As a result, gunpowder, which is also a Chinese invention, was rammed into bamboo stalks to enhance the startling effect. By the 11th century the Chinese used fireworks (yan huo) to celebrate the visit of the emperor. They included rockets (or “earth rats” because they were fired over the ground) and wheels, balls of colored smoke, firecrackers and fireworks attached to kites. They all made a “glorious sound.” Gunpowder and pyrotechnics could have been invented in Europe independently, but they probably reached those shores via the Mongols, who left western China for central Europe in the mid-13th century. In the early modern era, pyrotechnics became a demonstration of power. Symbolic or allegorical shows were designed to send a message to the audience. A lion could represent a powerful king, or the killing of a dragon could signal the conquest of the king’s enemies. What is certain is that fireworks were, as they continue to be, a captivating spectacle that produce a kind of visual epiphany in the audience as they explode in the sky in a thousand colors and shapes. It is no coincidence that kings and emperors wanted to be related to them. European monarchs then began to commission artists to produce large format drawings to be distributed to audiences. It would be thought,

5 as Simon Werrett writes in a wonderful article, that the impressions of fireworks were created after the event, in retrospective, but that was not the case. It was usual for the drawings to be made before the event, as an anticipation of what the public would later remember, instead of a record of history. The “anticipated memories” of fireworks served several purposes. They were published in pamphlets with explanations of their allegorical content and distributed to the people at court during the event so that nobody would miss the meaning of the sovereign’s message. The event was thus converted into a beautiful narrative or a story with meaning. The diverse graphic narratives of fireworks— which date from the 17th century to one particularly beautiful one from the 19th century (Whistler’s Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket)— comprise an exquisite graphic body now in the public domain. Each one captures an epiphany of meaning and dramatically expresses what pyrotechnics represented at the time. Tierra Santa Healing Meditations Tierra Santa invites you to its series of intimate meditations that will guide your breath and focus your mind to clear the way for new experiences.

BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO BOARD CERTIFIED DERMATOLOGIST, TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE In my day-to-day practice, I find that many of my patients are surprised when they hear about the various uses of Botox. Although it is best known for wrinkle reduction, there are many additional on- and off-label uses that go beyond a series of injections into the forehead or around the eyes. Let’s touch upon some of my favorite uses: HYPERHIDROSIS (excessive sweating). Common areas to treat are the armpits, palms and soles. This is a game changer for many! BRUXISM (teeth grinding). Botox can help shrink your masseter muscles which will decrease your ability to grind your teeth or clench your jaw. MIGRAINES. Botox is the first and only FDA-approved preventative treatment for Chronic Migraines.

PLATYSMAL BANDS (vertical bands on the front of neck). Botox injections can help to relax the vertical bands in the neck that can visibly age a patient. GUMMY SMILE. A quick, simple injection will relax the muscles that elevate the upper lip. This prevents a gummy smile. TEMPORARY EYEBROW LIFT. If carefully injected into the muscles that depress the brow, the brow can relax into a lifted position. In the appropriate patient, this is one of my favorite areas to treat as it really opens the eyes! JAWLINE SOFTENING. Hypertrophy, or thickening of the masseter muscle, can lead to a square or masculine jawline. By strategically injecting the masseter muscle, Botox can help to atrophy these muscles, leading to a slimmer and softer appearing lower face.

NOT JUST FOR WRINKLES!

DOWNTURNED MOUTH. Botox can relax the muscles that pull down the corners of your mouth (DAOs or Depressor Anguli Oris muscles). By injecting these muscles, the mouth will have a more upturned appearance therefore eliminating a “droppy appearance”. It is best used in combination with fillers.

Scientifically proven, meditation can not only reduce stress and improve happiness but, according to Harvard Neuroscientist Sara Lazar, it can improve the parts of your brain associated with learning, cognition, memory and emotional regulation. something that is not a burden but an understanding,” he says. Born in Lima, Peru, Eric first recognized that he had “the magic” in him at just 13 years old. He spent years studying shamanism and sacred plants in his native country with local spiritual leaders. It wasn’t until 2003 that he attended his first Family Constellations workshop in Miami, where his eyes were opened to the transformative power of this meaningful work, compelling him to study under distinguished psychotherapist Bert Hellinger for three years to become a certified facilitator. Since then, Eric has created a practice that’s uniquely his, integrating shamanic rituals, music and his experiences as a Medicine Man and Traditional Leader with the Nemenhah Native American Traditional Organization in Missouri. The result is a culturally sensitive therapy that draws wisdom from the respected elders who came before us and illuminates the course to our more genuine, enlightened and empathetic selves. While other forms of therapy require years of intense emotional work, Eric is confident in his practice and insists that a single session can bring about a profound change in those who participate. On July 13th from 6:00 pm to 930 pm, Eric Lopez will guide guests through the Bert Hellinger -developed Family Constellations methodology, facilitating a powerful healing ritual where each participant inches closer to enlightenment by exploring and processing familial trauma going as far as three generations back. “This approach uses elements of psychotherapy, regression, primal scream, psychodrama and ancestral history, combined with music and shamanic rituals to help individuals access their subconscious minds and heal traumatic imprints that have been passed down from their ancestors,” Eric said. During the workshop, Eric performs energy work to create an open and connected environment. Under his intuitive direction, participants are called on to fill in as representatives of past and present family members while a selected individual explores the origins of their suffering until reconciliation and emotional release can be sensed not only by the person sharing his or her issue, but by the entire group. Eric explains that this type of work is deeper than just a therapy tool, it moves into the quantum realm of the family soul, the individual soul and the unconscious inner child. “The way participants felt about the trauma eventually disappears or transforms into

A HAPPY LIFE IS A PEACEFUL LIFE BY TIM FELDMANN DIRECTOR OF MIAMI LIFE CENTER A happy life is a peaceful life according to ancient yogic wisdom. Peaceful living pivots around the axis of kindness, compassion and non-harming on every level, from what we eat to how we show up our relationships. Inner peace happens when we live in harmony with ourselves and our surroundings. Happiness does not live in a vacuum so in order to be happy we must cultivate peace on every level, every day and everywhere. Peace and calm don't just come by themselves. A commitment to live in a yogic way requires both work and commitment. We must plant the seed of kindness and joy within us, along with moment-to-moment attention to thought and action. When we nurture the seed it will grow a strong root. Only a strong root can grow a sturdy tree and only a healthy tree bears good fruit. So, by planting the seed of peace and tending to its growth with patience and diligence, you reap the harvest of true happiness. This is the poetic picture yoga paints for cultivating happy living. Yoga is a time-tested method that teaches us how to enjoy the harvest of life. Yoga is best practiced in a community with other people who walk the same path and face the same daily struggles. A qualified teacher who has walked the path, who knows the terrain well, can guide us towards wisdom and compassion. With these aids you are well-equipped for a successful hike into the spiritual forest. Yoga is far more than a bunch of physical exercises. Yoga uses the physical body as a mirror into our true being. You may start off in search of strength or flexibility, but you will find that the real benefits of the practice are much deeper. After years of practice you will look in the mirror and find humility, courage, joy and self respect. You will find yourself a little more present, lighter, happier and so much more connected to yourselves and the people we love. And isn't that what happiness is all about? Come and join us. We'd love to walk this path with you.

Classes at Tierra Santa Studio: Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Drop ins welcome. For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570.

Faena Rose Members recently returned from a cultural excursion in Buenos Aires to celebrate the opening night of Faena Art Center’s Biennale of Moving Images. With an immersive itinerary that explored the city’s vibrant cultural offerings, members experienced where the Faena Universe all began through the eyes of Alan Faena and Ximena Caminos. Highlights included an exclusive studio visit with renowned Argentinian artist Marta Minujín; a private viewing of Patricia and Juan Vergez’s incredible art collection—ranked amongst the top collections in the world by ARTnews; a tour with cutting-edge contemporary artist Diego Bianchi of his exhibition at the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art; a night at Faena Hotel’s world renowned Rojo Tango show; a backstage tour of the prestigious Teatro Colón; a curator-led tour of the Yves Klein retrospective at Fundación PROA; a VIP preview of arteBA, the leading contemporary art fair in South America; and much more. Members also indulged in Buenos Aires’s thriving gastronomic scene with curated dining experiences at the country’s #1 rated restaurant, Tegui; hot-spot Lusitano; local favorites El Obrero and La Brigada; and Patagonia Sur, the Buenos Aires outpost of Faena’s very own Chef Francis Mallmann. Faena Rose kicked off its cultural excursion series with a trip to Mexico City earlier this year for the zonaMACO art fair and looks forward to visiting Havana this fall.

PENTHOUSE RESIDENCES AT FAENA HOTEL MIAMI BE ACH

Crowing the top two floors of Faena Hotel Miami Beach, twelve custom-designed penthouse residences offer unparalleled luxury and dreamlike decadence. Alan Faena tapped the talented husbandand-wife duo, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and set designer Catherine Martin, to infuse the project with their signature grandiose creativity that marks the couple's Academy Award-winning movies Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby. “I really liked working with Baz and Catherine Martin to bring our soul of the south to Miami Beach,” Alan said. "They are used to working in cinema and not repeating themselves.” Luhrmann seemed to be equally inspired by the challenge, commenting that “Faena Hotel Miami Beach is about infinite possibilities, a mythical utopia that enthralls and transforms all who come…and leaves guests dreaming towards the point to which it is guiding them: the place beyond the horizon of infinite possibility, hope, love and life.” The hotel and penthouse residences are a culmination of this mutual desire to create spaces that inspire the poetry of life. three bedroom residences provide a seamless transition between living areas and Miami’s boundless blue sky and ocean views. Window walls open onto spacious terraces, creating a sense of openness and freedom. Residences are also outfitted with state-of-the-art appliances, master suites and deep soaking tubs. The showcase jewel in the exclusive collection? That would be the five-bedroom, six-bathroom Duplex Penthouse stretching over 14,000 square feet with breathtaking 360-degree panoramas, extensive entertaining spaces including a chef’s kitchen and open eat-in kitchen, as well as a great room, separate living room and a media room. The penthouse also features a dedicated interior elevator and staircase, service entrance and service quarters.
