The lofty Tree of Life sculpture typically stops people in their tracks as they walk down Collins Avenue through the Faena District. Not only because it’s tall and colorful, but also because it’s intriguing. A brightly painted globe sits at the center of the trunk and its leafy branches—hung with golden ornaments—sustain a red fairytale castle that’s topped with a rainbow, topped with a pink brain, topped with a fedora hat. It’s stunning and surreal. It’s also the first introduction most people have to Faena’s powerful iconography. For years, Alan Faena collaborated with Studio Job, an Antwerp-based design collective founded by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, to create custom symbology that embodies the keystone principles on which the Faena Universe stands. If you look closely at the sculpture you’ll notice symbols: the gilded key and wheel, the white top hat and the red rose, all of which manifest themselves—along with seven others— throughout the Faena District. Artist Juan Gatti has painted the symbols into his large-scale

Renaissance-style murals in the Cathedral lobby, where they’re also found in the vibrant mosaic imagery decorating the floor. You’ll spot them embellishing wallpaper and carpets, engraved into doors and on living room tables. They’re etched into pavement and emblazoned on fences. They make up Faena’s bold coat of arms. The Top Hat, which Alan Faena is rarely seen without, historically signifies leadership and distinction. By covering the head, it acts as a bridge between worlds, mediating the relationship between the earthly and the heavenly, the mental and the ethereal, the ordinary and the sublime. The Key represents openness. It is the breaking point between the past and the future, the object that triggers self-catharsis the moment before we unlock the new. Then there’s the ever-present Rose, whose form represents the rhythmic unfolding of the universe and pristine organization of the cosmos. It symbolizes order, passion and timelessness. It’s an icon of sensuality, elegance and balance. Like gardeners tending to a garden, Faena nurtures guests so their spirit can blossom in an inspired microcosm of unyielding beauty. Faena Prize for the Arts Open Call 2018

In a brief talk, Mark Strand speculated on the cosmic implications of creative work. From any point of view, consciousness is an admirable phenomenon. And in terms of evolution it is not exclusive to humans, although it has developed a unique level of complexity in our species. In our case we are conscious of many things and in many ways: conscious of our existence, of our place in the world and even in the universe, and of our relationship with others, and much more. With respect to this extraordinary fact, US poet Mark Strand spoke with psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who in the mid-1990s interviewed 91 people dedicated to intellectual pursuits to ask them about the creative process. For Strand, creativity is a form of consciousness, and not only human, but of the universe itself, a kind of channel of mutual recognition between human existence and cosmic existence. The poet says: “We’re only here for a short while. And I think it’s such a lucky accident, having been born, that we’re almost obliged to pay attention. In some ways, this is getting far afield. I mean, we are— as far as we know—the only part of the universe that’s self-conscious. We could even be the universe’s form of consciousness. We might have come along so that the universe could look at itself. I don’t know that, but we’re made of the same stuff that stars are made of, or that floats around in space”. But we’re combined in such a way that we can describe what it’s like to be alive, to be witnesses. Most of our experience is that of being a witness. We see and hear and smell other things. I think being alive is responding.

Strand’s argument could appear overwhelming but, if considered, is notably inspiring. It is a little bit about ontological speculation that invites us to not only assume our place in the world but, above all, defend with dignity that “fortunate accident.” And how? By doing what we really want: “[When] you’re right in the work, you lose your sense of time, you’re completely enraptured, you’re completely caught up in what you’re doing, and you’re sort of swayed by the possibilities you see in this work. If that becomes too powerful, then you get up, because the excitement is too great. You can’t continue to work or continue to see the end of the work because you’re jumping ahead of yourself all the time. The idea is to be so… so saturated with it that there’s no future or past, it’s just an extended present in which you’re, uh, making meaning. And dismantling meaning, and remaking it. Without undue regard for the words you’re using. It’s meaning carried to a high order. It’s not just essential communication, daily communication; it’s a total communication. When you’re working on something and you’re working well, you have the feeling that there’s no other way of saying what you’re saying”. Strand proposes that we are the medium through which the universe expresses itself. Perhaps, by being aware of that, we will naturally act according to that responsibility.

Faena Art, the international nonprofit organization led by Ximena Caminos, announces the open call for the 2018 Faena Prize for the Arts. A biennial international juried prize, the Faena Prize for the Arts recognizes artistic experimentation, encourages post-disciplinary and time-sensitive projects, and promotes inquiry of the infinite links among art, technology and design. This edition of the Faena Prize for the Arts serves as a platform for a continued reflection on the concepts of time and duration and invites artists from all disciplines to rethink the space of Faena Art Center Buenos Aires from these perspectives based on time and duration. The goal is to summon multidisciplinary artists from across the world to imagine site-sensitive works that dialogue not only with the monumental architecture of the building but also with the cultural and urban conditions of the city of Buenos Aires. Our institutional mission in this edition is to explore time itself as a working material. Considered one of the most prestigious art prizes in the Americas, The winning proposal will receive a $75,000 prize, and $25,000 in unrestricted funds will be awarded directly to the artist. The remaining $50,000 will be allo-

cated towards the production of the exhibition at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires, with the possibility of being adapted for Faena Forum Miami Beach. In addition to the main prize, two special mentions of $1,000 each will be awarded to the second and third most outstanding proposals. Previous Faena Prize winners are Roger Hiorns (2017, image shown), Cayetano Ferrer (2015), Fundación Vairoletto (2013), and Martín Sastre (2012). Special mention awards have been granted to Public Movement (2017), Mercedes Azpilicueta (2017), Nicolas Gullota (2015), Pablo Rasgado (2015), Santiago Sierra (2013), Sebastián Díaz Morales (2013), and Wilfredo Prieto (2012). Roger Hiorns, the 2017 Faena Prize winner will present his prize-winning exhibition at the Faena Art Center Buenos Aires in Febru-

ary 2018. His sculptural work generates and inhabits interstices between dissentient ideas: construction and destruction; the theological and the technological; temporality and permanence; authoritarian control and organic spontaneity. His objects are threaded with an unease that ties them, and our experience of them, to the amorphous, unrelenting global anxiety which suffuses our everyday reality. The exhibition will be curated by Pablo León de la Barra, Guggenheim UBS Map Curator, Latin America. Visit www.faenaart.org/faenaprize for more information on the Prize’s schedule.

A Weekend with Lama Phakyab Rinpoche

PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM AIR POLLUTION Most of us know the risks of UV and sun exposure, but many of us are unaware of the damage air pollution can cause on the skin. Air pollution has a wide range of sources, and the most common include car exhaust, cigarette smoke, dust, and smog. These sources contain tiny particles that can penetrate the skin’s barrier, leading to puffiness, dull skin, dry skin, dark spots, dyspigmentation and even rashes. To protect your skin from these potentially damaging particles, here are some things to consider: • Just as the antioxidants found in food can help stave off free radical damage in other parts of your body, a diet rich in these nutrients can help fix your face. Vitamins A, C and E are the ones you really want. These can be found in yellow, orange and red foods such as oranges, squash, carrots. • Topical antioxidants such as serums and creams with stable forms of Vitamin C should be part of your daily skin regimen. These will not only help protect your skin from free radicals, but they have proven to help lighten brown spots. • Create a barrier between your skin and environmental stressors. Moisturizers and facial foundations will trap some of the pollutants’ nanoparticles preventing them from touching the skin, therefore blocking potential damage.

SEPTEMBER 2017

As an abbot of the Ashi and Lithang monasteries in Eastern Tibet, Lama Rinpoche was well-known for his ability to perform Tantric obstacle-clearing rituals to assist individuals in physical and emotional healing. In 2003, he faced life-threatening injuries including gangrene and decided to forego leg amputation and rely on meditation and faith to heal himself. Much to the astonishment of his doctors, Lama Rinpoche was successful in gradually healing himself, which led to the penning of his book, Meditation Saved My Life. On Friday, September 8th from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Lama Rinpoche will give a lecture in which he shares in detail how meditation guided him from being near death’s door following time spent imprisoned in China to a life of physical and spiritual wellness, followed by a signing of his acclaimed book. The following day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., guests can join Lama Rinpoche for a workshop on Dharmic teachings and goddess Panden Lhamo. He’ll help attendees receive her blessings, casting out illness and negativity in the process. On Sunday, September 10th, guests can join Lama Rinpoche for an all-day

Pranic Healing Energy is everything and everything is energy. Energy is our life force, and what affects our energy field affects our physical body too. Pranic Healing is a system of energy medicine that seeks to accelerate the body’s natural healing process by removing obstructed energy in the chakras, which accumulates from negative thoughts and emotions and leads to poor physical health. Tierra Santa Healing House’s Spa Director Agustina Caminos has introduced a series of Pranic Healing treatments and workshops that harmonize, balance and transform the body’s energy processes to restore physical, mental and emotional health. She’s also invited gifted Pranic healers Master Glenn and Master Marilag to host workshops and retreats. An alternative medicine practitioner, yogi, and spiritual guide who studied at Master Choa Kok Sui’s Institute of Inner Studies in the Philippines, Agustina is a certified Pranic

Healing practitioner. She’s experienced the benefits of self-healing for nearly 20 years and personally healed patients suffering from trauma, depression, physical ailments and disease. Even those who are skeptical about non-traditional treatments should keep an open mind when it comes to the practice, says Agustina. “Pranic Healing is for everyone,” she explains. “Knowing the laws of the Universe and how energy works, we become more aware of what we are manifesting in our life and learn how to intentionally avoid what is harmful. I encourage people to try Pranic Healing and be receptive its positive effects.” For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570.

CUT TO THE FEELING! BY JOSEPH ARMSTRONG. YOGA TEACHER AT MIAMI LIFE CENTER/ TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE In those classic Hollywood silent films, the big climax was always some exciting chase scene. The hero had lost something and a mad dash ensues to get it back. Filmmakers of the time knew that too much dialogue would bore the audience and they would lose interest in the movie. Instead, the director would cut straight to the fun excitement of the chase. Believe it or not, there is a similar philosophy in Ashtanga Yoga! The physical postures that we practice, Asana, are not the first or even the second focus of yoga. Classic Yoga texts outline eight principles, of which asana is the third. Instead of exploring all 8 limbs right away, our Guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, guided his students towards a physical practice that would include all the branches in one method. He summed up this philosophy simply, by saying that yoga is 99% practice, 1% theory. He laid out a detailed yoga sequence requiring strength, flexibility and focus, leading to ever-growing self-awareness. In the west, yoga is often synonymous with a physical fitness routine. Given Jois’ ‘99% practice’ suggestion, that might be an understandable conclusion. But what initially could be perceived as a form of exercise, is in fact a spiritual path. So, ask yourself: In the movie of your life, what have you lost? What are you in pursuit of? Do you wonder why you’re here and what your purpose is? What are you chasing? What do you seek? Do you have big questions? As a teacher of yoga, I could point you towards ancient writings or challenging seated meditations that could potentially help you find true, personal answers to these questions. But instead, I follow the lead of my own teachers and advise you to start a simple, daily practice of yoga asana. You will discover that all the questions and answers come together there! So, when in doubt, get physical and cut straight to the feeling. Start with what you know - get in your body and get on your mat. See what happens when you come face to face with yourself. Keep showing up every day, for a long time. Practice with the three big Ds: Dedication, Determination and Devotion. Chase that inner life!

Classes at Tierra Santa Studio: Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m. Drop ins welcome. For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570.

Atop Faena Hotel Miami Beach, twelve famously-designed penthouses offer the ultimate Miami experience, combining hotel amenities, unparalleled views of the ocean and city skyline, and the luxury guests have come to expect from Faena. To create these dreamy, sun-drenched residences, Faena tapped filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and Academy Award-winning production designer Catherine Martin, allowing the husband-and-wife duo to infuse the spaces with the creativity that have made films like Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge! such showpieces of modern cinema. Invoking the spirit of Faena’s predecessor, the Saxony Hotel, Luhrmann and Martin have created collection of homes shining with star quality and awash in unparalleled luxury, ranging from one- to three-bedrooms and up to 3,300 square feet of living space, in addition to a 14,000-squarefoot duplex penthouse that boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen, outdoor terraces, private stair and elevator entry, and a separate service entrance. Residents also enjoy a host of personalized perks, including move-in assistance, a 24-hour concierge and delivery services. When you call Faena home, everything is at your fingertips. You receive special rates throughout the Faena District, preferred status at other Faena properties and a two-year Faena Rose membership, granting you exclusive access to Faena’s elite cultural events. Founder Alan Faena once said: “If you offer the best in a great environment with great architecture, with great service, with great culture around, people will come.” And the people that came make the most interesting neighbors.
