AN ARTISTIC JOURNEY
Immerse yourself in the inaugural Art Basel Cities Week at Buenos Aires Buenos Aires is poised to take the art world by storm this month. The Argentine arts capital, chosen over a notable group of world capitals, will be the first-ever host city for the new multiyear Art Basel Cities program. Buenos Aires will take its place on a global stage September 6-12 as celebrated local and international artists enliven the city through a series of experiential installations, performances, site-specific sculptures and special events. The high-profile art week will spread across three of the city’s emerging neighborhoods—La Boca, Puerto Madero and Palermo—as part of the Cecilia Alemani-curated series, dubbed “Hopscotch,” a moniker derived from Argentine writer Julio Cortázar’s 1963 stream-of-consciousness novel of the same name. The program features never-before-seen venues, forgotten landmarks, and public sites in grand plazas, parks, and along the waterfront that are not typically devoted to contemporary art. Included in the showcase, among others, are an oversized sculpture from Buenos Aires-based Luciana Lamothe; Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s living cemetery, Eternity; and American artist David Horvitz’s tribute to Marcel Duchamp. Championing artistic innovation and turning the city itself into a living canvas, this unique and multifaceted program is sure to cement Buenos Aires’ ever-growing global reputation as a must-visit cultural destination.
Naama Tsabar at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires Faena Art presents “Melodies of Certain Damage (Opus 2)”, a new sonic and immersive, site-specific exhibition by Israeli artist Naama Tsabar. Israeli artist Naama Tsabar has spent her prolific career exploring the connections among conceptual art, performance, and music with interactive sonic installations that have been exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York, Pianissimo Gallery in Milan and Tel Aviv’s Dvir Gallery. This month, she’ll debut Melodies of Certain Damage (Opus 2) at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires during Art Basel Cities. Like many of her previous artworks that explore questions of power, eroticism, gender and memory, this site-specific sonic environment will tune the entire Sala Molinos exhibition space, activated by a number of female identifying and gender nonconforming musicians and performers. “There is a certain kind of community-related collaboration and participation within my work, and I find that with women it is easier to achieve things without anybody overpow-
ering someone else,” the artist told Whitewall Magazine. “There is a lot of listening and a lot of patience, and that’s really important to creation.” Appropriating an iconic and overtly macho trope of breaking the guitar during a punk or rock and roll performance, Tsabar repurposes the broken pieces as objects of beauty, instruments in their own right, and the act of playing these relics of virility creates a new kind of quiet power. In doing so, the installation appropriates and subverts the aggressive gestures of rock and roll and their associations with masculinity, while at the same time encouraging a new mode for public engagement with sculpture and sound. “We are honored to host Naama Tsabar in Buenos Aires and to co-commission her latest body of work and new site-specific performance, which breaks with traditional divides

between popular music and contemporary art,” said Alan Faena. “Her sonic environment proposes a new exhibition and concert format that disrupts our experience of the Faena Art Center and exemplifies our commitment to supporting artists as they work across disciplines and geographic boundaries.”

If the sun and heat of summer has left your mane dry and limp, head to Faena’s Rossano Ferretti Salon to nourish your locks back to life. Famous for “The Method,” which focuses on the natural fall of the hair, Rossano Ferretti stylists enhance individual beauty by tailoring “invisible cuts,” treatments, balayage, color gloss, and extensions to each client’s specific hair type and characteristics. To revive dull and damaged hair, indulge in a Prodigio treatment rich in hydrolyzed keratin that leaves the hair shiny and silky by deeply penetrating the hair shaft and restoring
hair cuticles. For color-treated hair, opt for a Dolce treatment: the no-rinse, detangling spray is rich in hydrolyzed proteins that help prolong hair color while minimizing breakage and frizz, and adding strength and sheen. To restore a healthy shine, try Brillante, an intensely hydrating, no-rinse shining oil with a UV filter to protect hair from sun exposure, leaving your tresses soft, shiny and strong.

Acne Vitamin A should be your new go-to supplement since it has been known to get rid of acne. However, it is important to tread carefully since too much of a good thing can result in dizziness, nausea and headaches. I suggest starting with your diet by adding in vitamin A–rich foods, including carrots, red meat and eggs. Further, zinc can be another powerful player in clearing out your pores. Zinc is an important part of wound healing and often acne lesions are inflamed. Sun Damage and Free Radicals Turn toward the powerful antioxidants of vitamins C and E. Antioxidants fight free radical damage, which is caused by environmental pollution and ultraviolet rays. Although taking vitamin C every day via pill or chewable isn’t a bad idea for your body, a topical vitamin C and E combo might be more effective because these two work best when they’re together. Dryness While the condition of your skin and its softness will vary by season, low Vitamin D can lead to persistent dryness. Vitamin D likely improves dryness by improving the skin barrier function. Another option is to eat more of foods rich in this mineral like fatty fish, milk and cheese. Brittle Hair and Nails Low levels of iron or biotin can result in brittle hair or nails, especially in women. I recommend an iron or biotin supplement to combat this deficiency. Further, low iron levels have been associated with hair loss and hair thinning, again particularly in women. I recommend checking your ferritin levels and supplementing with iron if levels are too low.
To book a consultation with Dr. Del Campo, please email spamiami@faena. com or call 786 655 5570. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 for more information.

FAENA JOURNAL
Faena Rose
Perhaps music, more than the art of sound, is the art of time. That’s why its communion with space, and architecture, is so often so perfect. When we touch upon this relationship between music and architecture, we’re really speaking not of the meeting of two arts, but of two dimensions– and of their respective original forces. The influence of music on space is palpable. We know that a room, and what happens inside it, can be transformed radically by the musical influences applied to it. But this also happens, as David Byrne has noted, in the other direction: spaces, and their purposes, have inspired and influenced schools of
musical thought. Sacred music could hardly have existed without the prior existence of cathedrals and monasteries. Punk simply wouldn’t sound the same without the chaotic, little London clubs of its era. Music which Acts on the Subject Numerous studies have analyzed the effects of music at the cellular level: on behavior, longevity and other aspects of cells. Music has also been documented for its role in the process of neuroplasticity, and in the physical changes undergone by the brain over the course of our lifetimes. Thus, even without appealing to any ‘new-age’ hypotheses warning of the impact of music on the molecular structures of water, we might suggest with some confidence that music has a tangible impact on matter.

But if music has this capacity to alter cellular behavior, or to re-model the human brain, let’s speculate a little on what affect music might have on space–and the depths it can reach. The Art of Time-Space "I call architecture frozen music". –Goethe The German composer, K.H. Stockhausen warned that the space-music relationship is an essential factor in his compositions. During the composition phase, he considered the direction at which sound would travel through space. He found it impossible to dissociate music from physical space, something similar to what happened with Iannis Xenakis, a French-Greek architect who later shined as a musician during the second half of the 20 th-century. Spatiality in music, and musicality in architecture, refer to the mathematical essences of both disciplines. The “music of the spheres,” as Pythagoras called it: the music generated, at least philosophically, by the displacement of the stars.
"A composition is like a house you can walk around in". –John Cage

SEPTEMBER 2018
It’s interesting to consider that sound needs space to come to life–that is, as a means to the unleashing of its waves. On the other hand, there’s no space, at least not on Earth, that can be fully shielded from the assault of sound. We might then even insist upon following Stockhausen’s example and simply admit that one cannot be separate from the other. In the middle of a crossroad Music and architecture meet at a crossroads which, similar to a Zen koan, or the tree which falls in a forest, is perhaps in need of that perceptive ingredient to even exist. That is, they need time, space, and a consciousness which perceives them. So, the next time you listen to music, and you’ll do so inevitably within a physical space, remember that you’re an equal protagonist in one of the deepest of communions.
