LIVE ENTERTAINMENT AT THE LIVING ROOM & THE SA XONY BAR THE LIVING ROOM NIGHTLY EVENING ACTS •
Viva Bossa Nova! Marcos Valle, one of the founding fathers of Bossa Nova, is kicking off the first-ever international Viva Bossa Nova festival at Faena Theater. Commemorating 60 years of the celebrated Brazilian genre, top musicians are bringing their talents to Miami for a five-day soul-filled event. Bossa Nova was born on the beaches of Rio De Janeiro in the late '50s, where a group of students, artists and musicians famously blended a soft samba based on traditional Brazilian rhythms with American jazz and a new style of Portuguese lyrics. Well-known musicians like João Gilberto, Roberto Menescal, Marcos Valle, and Antonio Carlos Jobim adopted and popularized the “new wave” music style, transforming it over time into the best-known Brazilian music genre
Samsara Sets Fire To The Stage at Faena Theater This October, the curtains will rise on Faena’s newest show: Samsara Cabaret. A seductive Madame narrates the transformative journey of Artemis, a being formed from stardust, as she fights against the dark energy that surrounds her. Transcending her own dimension, the show’s lead protagonist, played by Miami native Bianca Allanic, undergoes a startling phoenix-like metamorphosis right before
the audience’s eyes as jaw-dropping illusions, state-of-the-art technology, contemporary dance, cirque nouveau, live music, and decadent dinner fare create an immersive theater experience unlike any other. The outstanding ensemble also includes singer and “America’s Got Talent” semi-finalist Yoli Mayor, violinist Shane Borth, cellist Ben
Muñoz, and Sensatia stars Megan Stockman, EnVee and Samantha Mixan. The incandescent performance, directed by Quixotic’s Anthony Magliano and Christian Squires, is a sensuous meditation on the eternal cycle of creation and transformation, during which guests are siren-called to leave their old selves behind in search for the ever new.
Samsara will debut to the public on October 20, 2018 with shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. To stay up-to-date on all Faena news, follow us on Instagram (@Faena) and subscribe to our e-newsletter at www.faena. com/miami-beach. in the world. After a historic concert at Carnegie Hall in 1962, Bossa Nova caught the attention of American contemporaries such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Bennett. The sophisticated fusion went on to influence entire generations of performers including Herbie Mann, Paul McCartney and Sting. Guests of Faena Theater will enjoy an intimate concert with Valle, who will light up the stage with his infectious hits like "Summer Samba (So Nice)" and "If You Went
Away". A legend in Brazil, Valle is one of country’s most influential composers, and undoubtedly, one of the top songwriters of our time. Tickets and more information available at www.faenatheater.com. In-house guests may dial the concierge at 4037 for more information and reservations. OCT

Subversive and Immersive Art With Naama Tsabar The larger-than-life presence of Israeli-born and New York-based performance artist Naama Tsabar graced the Faena Art Center Buenos Aires last month. Tsabar’s innovative, site-specific piece, “Melodies of Certain Damage (Opus 2)”, compelled the audience to question issues like power, eroticism, gender, and memory through radical artistry. Her sonic installation employed female and gender-nonconforming artists to break with traditional divides between popular music and contemporary art and create an entirely new immersive experience. Harkening back to the title of the work, Tsabar appropriated the male machismo act of breaking a guitar on stage during a rock performance, an act steeped in sex and violence. She then used pieces of these broken instruments to compose music and create a
quiet but meaningful dialogue. Alan Faena commissioned the work of this world-renowned artist to exemplify “our commitment to supporting artists as they work across disciplines and geographic boundaries.” Performing within the Sala Molinos but refusing to scale up her performance to fit the huge venue, Tsabar created another of the subversive gestures that define her work. Her composure with the smashed totems of sex/masculine/punk flips the script, embracing the opposite tropes— the lyrical, the feminine, the delicate. Tsabar’s works often draw elements of sex and sensuality—she plays with the construct of experience in high-concept installations
and performances using “found items.” A selection of her solo installations includes Pianissimo Gallery, Milan (2009) and Art Statements Art Basel (2008), Dvir Gallery, Tel-Aviv (2007), and Herziliya Museum for Contemporary Art, Israel (2006). Faena Art hosted “Melodies of Certain Damage (Opus 2)” for a week before it opened to the public during the weekend of Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires in September. For more information about Naama Tsabar’s performance installation at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires, visit www.faenaart.org
Tsabar creates experiential, sculptural, sonic installations that explore questions of power, eroticism, gender and memory. Her sensually driven installations, performances, and sculptures address the implicit gender roles and coded behavior of music and nightlife.

Nurture Your Inner Illumination October at Tierra Santa Healing House abounds with opportunities to invigorate the body and calm the soul.
PUT YOUR FALL FACE FORWARD
PERFECT SKIN
As the seasons change, so too do your skincare needs. Pamper yourself from head to toe at Tierra Santa Healing House, where every treatment uses state-of the-art technology and trusted skincare brands like Biologique Recherche and Naturopathica.
BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR I often get asked the question, “How do I make my pores smaller?” Like many things about your body, pore size is genetically determined and cannot be changed. However, here is some good news: You can minimize the appearance. Here’s how:
Lead Esthetician Flo Virzi recommends scheduling a facial every 30 days—a full skin cycle—to accelerate the natural exfoliation process and encourage the vital new cell growth essential to a healthy complexion. After months of summer heat, the Biologique Recherche Le Soin Equilibrant Facial soothes and decongests the skin, quenches dehydrated tissue, and eliminates signs of aging. Coming from colder climates, where harsh, chilly winds can irritate and stress your face? Look no further than the Masque Biologique Recherche Feerie, a guest-favorite collagen mask that plumps the skin and provides rejuvenating hydration. Highly trained estheticians customize treatments to the unique skincare needs of both men and women, using nourishing full-body massages, deep cleanses, and the latest facial and healing modality techniques to deliver benefits that go well beyond skin deep.
1. Sebaceous glands pump out oil that fills pores, making them appear larger. By reducing the oil that’s produced, you can temporarily “minimize” large pores. Retin-A or retinol-based products nightly are my go-to. Alpha-hydroxy-acid-based peel pads also help. 2. Unclog your pores. Clogged pores that are full of trapped dead skin cells appear larger, so unclogging can make them appear smaller. Consider an at-home clay or charcoal-based mask weekly. 3. Exfoliate. There are two types of exfoliators: Physical exfoliators are scrubs that unclog your pores through friction; Chemical exfoliators such as alpha hydroxy acids and retinoids dissolve the sticky glue-like substance that clogs the pores; no scrubbing is needed. When you exfoliate, you remove dead skin cells from the upper skin layer revealing new skin that looks brighter and smoother and feels significantly softer. It’s easy to overdo exfoliation, so be careful. Once to twice a week is enough for most people. If your skin becomes red, dry, or irritated, stop exfoliating. 4. Use a makeup primer. Primers that have silicone fill in the pores, making them look smaller and providing a smooth base for your makeup.

CULINARY CHEMISTRY
The Makings of an Asado Temple A common dream of culinary excellence united Argentine visionaries Alan Faena and Chef Francis Mallmann. With a mind toward infusing elements of South American art, culture, and food into every aspect of Faena Miami Beach, Alan Faena invited Mallmann to create a restaurant after his own heart. A sophisticated grillmaster, Mallman is renowned for his earthy take on food—made with solid, singular ingredients like meat, salt and wine—and for passionately embracing his Patagonian heritage through traditional cooking methods. Born from the union of these two artists, Los Fuegos quickly became a byword for excellence among those seeking an elevated South American dining experience. From the beginning, Mallmann had a hand in engineering the asado temple that would encapsulate his aesthetic and experience. In-
stalling an enormous bespoke wood-burning oven (dubbed “the piano”) was but one necessary element, as was a traditional cast-iron plancha for searing meat and vegetables, and an open flame to create the luscious asado (barbecue) that is his birthright. The restaurant’s floorplan also aligns with Faena and Mallmann’s goal to inspire curiosity among guests—diners intrigued by the elemental cooking style can seat themselves at an outdoor counter and admire the graceful choreography of open-flame cooking in the elegantly rugged kitchen. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at +1 786 655 5600.
On October 10, Pao by Paul Qui will welcome celebrated chefs Michael Lewis and Raheem Sealy to Faena Miami Beach for the next installment of its Chef Collective series, a gastronomic event in which chefs from around the world come together to create an innovative menu of unpredictable flavors. Hailing from KYU, a James Beard nominee for “Best New Restaurant” based in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, the dynamic duo will join Pao Executive Chef Paul Qui and Chef de Cuisine Benjamin Murray to create a collection of Asian-inspired dishes fusing KYU’s signature wood-fire cooking with Pao’s inventive ingredient pairings, along with a selection of “sneak previews” of new menu offerings at KYU and Pao ahead of their public debuts.

Rituals around the never-ending cycle of life and death PARTY BEYOND THE VEIL
Knowing the world, the secret nature of death has led to some of the most beautiful cults. to visit the world of the living–in this case, during the seventh month of the lunisolar calendar, the ghost month. But the festival also honors their presence with offerings and mostly vegetarian banquets. The dead are then routed onto barges with lanterns on the rivers to prevent their straying along the way.
Join the revelry on Halloween weekend for a Día de los Muertos fete inspired by the Hispanic tradition of family and friends honoring their beloved departed on a spiritual journey to the beyond. We’ll celebrate the day with a sultry Dark Circus theme, where lavishly outfitted performers and guests mingle amidst atmospheric live music. Raise a glass to the immortal souls of those lost to us in the Library Lounge, where signature author cocktails like the “Madame Bovary”—Hennessy V.S., Ristretto Nespresso, passion fruit syrup, and cinnamon bitter—create striking combinations. Among all the ways by which humankind celebrates its existence, the funeral rite may be the most symbolic of all. The mythical and arcane nature of the rite ensures its place as a ritual linking states of being; life and death. Ceremonies and processions consecrate this most universal of procedures, as well as the protective deities surrounding the event. Funeral rites have existed since humankind first understood these two fundamental concepts: consciousness and impermanence. Every rite is an initiation. And in this sense, the death cult emerged from the traditional practice of releasing participants from fear of mystery, from latent uncertainty, and to offer up a sense of liberty and detachment, (and all in an unedited, possibly absolute, manifestation). An unavoidable, and often involuntary, part of all of this is the preparation for death that has itself gestated all manner of cults: psycho-dramatic techniques and performative rituals that elevate one to the point of ecstasy and harmony. Then, too, there are proverbial thoughts, enunciated over the centuries: he who fears death will never enjoy life.
Originally organized as a day for mothers to exchange views on pressing issues, this 19th century Argentine tradition evolved into a celebration for those who gave us life. At El Mercado, families can indulge in an opulent Mother’s Day Brunch elevating the traditional flavors of Argentina. Sample pink salmon ceviche alongside cured hams, poached eggs, artisanal breads, and a sumptuous cheese selection. Afterwards, mothers can cultivate inner peace at the Faena Spa, where the six-hour celebratory package of yoga, aromatherapy massage, hammam, and meditation will leave the soul calm and chakras aligned.
Mahalaya; Day of the Spirits Mahalaya is an ancient Hindu ceremony celebrated during October in India. From earliest times, men and women visited the Ganges River to bath but also to recite litanies and chants devoted to the dead. Back at home, people recite the “Chandipath,” one of the oldest mantras uttered for the reincarnation of the goddess, Durga. This was often prayed at nightfall to scare away demons. The frequency with which these songs are recited is said to increase the fecundity of the magic. During the same day, the idyllic “Chakku dan” ritual often takes place. In this, the eyes of the goddess are drawn.

The Festival of the Hungry Ghosts In Buddhism and Taoism, the “Festival of the Hungry Ghosts” provides an opportunity to help the souls of the underworld ascend and transmute their suffering. Like many traditions that make offerings to the dead, this ceremony is based on the ancient belief that the dead are granted a day
The Procession of the Cows (Gai Jatra) In Nepal, it’s believed that death is an everyday occurrence. In this way, the concept is introduced in preparation for the acceptance of fate and the inevitable. In Hindu belief, life is only a vehicle of initiation and purification from a world to which we don’t truly belong. Based on these premises, the procession (Ghinta Ghisi), refers to death and the dead. But it’s celebrated with special joy and a beautiful parade of masks, makeup, costumes and other elements during a season of beatitude each August. The name, Gai Jatra, literally refers to the procession led by the cattle, sacred animals with the ability to guide spirits back to the kingdom of Yama.
Día de los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead) Death itself is a cult of a most primitive cosmogony, and it’s one of the most common ways to connect with divinity and the mysteries thereof in Mexico. As unlikely as it is to smile at death, or to even laugh in death’s face, that is rather the point of the Day of the Dead. Here, death is honored through colors, sugary skulls and marigold flowers for those dead who dare visit the earthly planes during the first days of November. The mortuary ritual has transmuted over time into a joyous celebration, the origins of which begin in ancient pre-Columbian civilizations where the dead would, each year, head off for a distant and different existence. Records bear mention of a number of underworlds known to the ancients, but Mictlán, an underworld guarded by the gods, Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacíhuatl, was most commonly understood as the land of the dead. An underworld beneath the earth, like a seed awaiting resurrection, it remains a poetry of eternal return. Left column: Yama, the Lord of Death, holding the Wheel of Life / Welcome Trust.
