LA FLORIDA, THE NEW WORLD

Columbus landed here, and some points South. This is a grand peninsula, surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. Even the landmass itself is one big aquifer, a mass of limestone under which flows a river of fresh water. The islands start here, marching south down the Keys toward Cuba, a road and a railroad crossing the sea to Key West. Miami is a Caribbean City, maybe the Capital of the Caribbean—at least to the capitalists. That means extraordinary wealth, not just financial wealth, but cultural wealth of the Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominica, Cuba, Haiti, and dozens more cultures that are as lively and productive as any on Earth. “It furthers one to cross the great water,” says the I-Ching. That means “perseverance furthers.” Looking out from our spot on the broadest beach in Miami we see the same horizon. The sun rises here. Travelers arrive here on the beach, like the waves with their surfboards. In Miami Beach we feel like the tide is coming in, bringing great things with it. These are some of our favorite things, and we would like to share them with you.

MANDOLIN AEGE AN BISTRO

As you enter Mandolin’s aquacolored gates, you’re instantly transported to the Greek Islands or Turkish coast with a dose of warm, genuine, Mediterranean hospitality. Inspired by the tavernas of Aegean coastal towns, Mandolin was opened by the husband-wife team of Ahmet Erkaya and Anastasia Koutsioukis and serves homespun recipes from their native Greece and Turkey. The couple opened the popular locale after a trip to Miami, where they stumbled upon an old 1940s bungalow and decided to leave New York and open their dream restaurant. It now serves simple, unpretentious, healthy food using the freshest ingredients in a welcoming atmosphere. 4312 NE 2nd Avenue, Design District Tel: +1 (305) 749-9140

CARBONE

Founded by Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick, Carbone is one of the most celebrated Italian restaurants of the last decade. The New York Times probably put it best: “It is a fancy red-sauce joint as directed by Quentin Tarantino, bringing back the punch-in-the-guts thrills of a genre that everybody else sees as uncultured and a little embarrassing, while exposing the sophistication that was always lurking there. The restaurant has a technical prowess that can make you giddy and an instinct for sheer entertainment that makes a lot of other restaurants seem like earnest, unimaginative drones.” 49 Collins Avenue, South Beach, Miami Beach TIGRE

Artist Michele Oka Doner has paved the concourses of Miami International Airport with thousands of sculptural bronze elements, from sea plants and animals through native Florida plant life to astronomical objects. Extending over more than two miles, Doner’s fantastical public art installations are a first welcome and a last farewell to airport passengers. Miami International Airport FLY’S EYE DOME (1979-2014) BY BUCKMINSTER FULLER

In 1965 Buckminster Fuller designed and patented the Fly’s Eye Dome, which he called an ‘autonomous dwelling machine’. The design, a Monohex variation of the geodesic dome, can clearly be seen as a forerunner of today’s green building movement. In 2011, collector Craig Robins acquired the 24-foot prototype with the intention of exhibiting it and using it as inspiration for a key element of the Design District. 140 NE 39th Street, Design District ABOUT SAND (2018) BY FR ANZ ACKERMANN

Franz Ackermann makes vibrant paintings and installations centered on themes of travel, tourism, globalization, and urbanism. Ackermann has created large-scale dynamic installations that are built up from individual components comprising paintings, drawings, photographs, wall drawings and sculptural, billboard-like constructions. The places he depicts have a generic quality, and yet they look strangely familiar: non-places where the traveler’s desire replaces the local culture.

Bent Pool is shaped like an inverted “U” and stands upright on a two-tier plinth. The pool seems to have somehow been lifted out of the ground and stretched into a curved form. With a turquoise blue interior, one of Elmgreen & Dragset’s signature colors, and a matte white exterior, the work both stands out against the greenery of Pride Park at the Miami Beach Convention Center and creates a synoptic connection to the park as a leisure area. Due to Miami Beach’s climate and status as a beloved holiday destination, swimming pools are a natural part of the city’s fabric. The distorted shape of the

A feeling of tranquility will wash over you as you emerge into a quiet world of tangled, tidal mangroves inside this protected river estuary. Considered Florida’s largest urban park, Oleta encompasses more than 1,000 acres of greenery set against Biscayne Bay, ideal for kayaking, biking, hiking, swimming, and camping. Originally known as the Big Snake River, the area was once a settlement of Tequesta Indians.

Stiltsville is a group of wood stilt houses located one mile south of Cape Florida, on sand banks of the Safety Valve on the edge of Biscayne Bay. The structures stand on wood or reinforced concrete pilings, generally ten feet above the shallow water, which varies from one to three feet deep at low tide. In 2003, a non-profit organization called the Stiltsville Trust was established and included the seven remaining leaseholders, called caretakers, and eight members of the community.

CATHEDR AL

The eight murals by Argentine artist Juan Gatti—commissioned for The Cathedral hall at Faena Hotel Miami Beach—illuminate the way to Futopia, a mystical continent of utopic communities and perfect worlds. Hidden in one of the murals is a Latin phrase rich in symbolic and allegorical resonances: et in arcadia ego. “And I am in Arcadia” or “I also am in Arcadia”. The mysterious phrase points back to the utopian land that Classical minds imaginarily placed in the Greek region of Arcadia—an earthly paradise that, over the centuries, has enthralled the mightiest of imaginations from Virgil to Dante and Nietzsche. Futopia is an Arcadia for the days to come. Gatti’s masterful paintings ostensibly place it somewhere in the lush jungles of the Americas, where the ships and the relics of long-lost conquistadors evoke their quests for El Dorado and the Fountain of Youth. But the murals are also loaded with a profusion of symbols that mark the way to “Futopia”— above anything else—a path for the spirit. The eight landmarks that compose this fertile visual universe were inspired by Alan’s life and the journey on which we all travel. The path of the spiritual warrior starts within himself, with the conquest of inward virtues such as those depicted in gnosis, illuminatio, pax and potere, so that he may then exert a positive influence on the rest of the world through outward virtues like the ones illustrated in scientia, revelatio, amor and energos.

LOS FUEGOS BY FR ANCIS MALLMANN Born from a passion for the ancient art of South American live-fire cooking, Argentine grill master Francis Mallmann creates a contemporary asado experience with an open-fire kitchen, local ingredients, and a gaucho’s touch to transform traditional rustic recipes into sophisticated, savory dishes. Mallmann is South America’s most renowned chef. Growing up in Patagonia on a cliff overlooking Lago Moreno, fire played a large role in Mallmann’s childhood and the memories of that time define him and his cooking techniques today. Los Fuegos’s fire kitchen has been custom designed by the renowned chef to fuse his many fire-cooking techniques into one extraordinary kitchen, and it is the first of its kind in an urban environment. Mallmann has designed a large, custom-built wood oven, the “piano,” a grand-scale grill of bespoke design hand-crafted in Texas, planchas and hooks from which to hang fish and meat from, as well as a section dedicated solely to cooking in ashes. Additionally, Mallmann has designed special cooking utensils exclusively for the Faena fire kitchen made from materials ranging from copper, wood and iron to porcelain, marble and stainless steel. A true testament to Faena’s mission to create an inspired, imaginative, reality, Los Fuegos by Chef Francis Mallmann brings a unique and remarkable dining experience to Miami Beach.

PAO BY PAUL QUI

+1 (786) 655-5600 Dinner 7-11pm (Tue-Thu) 7-12am (Fri-Sat) Closed Mon & Tue

Drawing from a range of international styles including Filipino, Spanish, Japanese and French, Pao boldly presents a new brand of modern Asian cuisine with stunning ocean views. Paul Qui rocketed the ranks to culinary stardom after winning Top Chef followed up by a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest. Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio once called Qui “the most talented chef in the show’s history.” Today he’s grown to become one of the most formidable young talents in North America with critically acclaimed restaurants and a group of Asianinspired food trucks in Austin, Texas. Born in Manila, Philippines and trained in classic French and Japanese cuisine, Qui takes a modernist approach towards food that’s playful, authentic, and unexpected. He’s a master at marrying classical technique with local flavors, while also taking inspiration from Filipino, Japanese, Spanish and French culinary styles. “Food is about memories, familiarity and comfort” says Qui who strives not to be pigeon-holed into a single type of cuisine. Instead, he’d rather be defined by the experience of his guests, who keep delivering rave reviews.
