TAMAR GUIMARÃES AND K ASPER AKHØJ, WINNERS OF THE 2018 EDITION OF FAENA PRIZE FOR THE ARTS
Considered one of the most prestigious art prizes in the Americas, the award is a catalyst for innovative, site-specific and immersive works that transcend the traditional boundaries of art, science, technology, philosophy, and social practice. “Building upon the success of Faena Prize in Buenos Aires, we are thrilled to bring the Faena Prize to Miami, a vibrant epicenter of cutting-edge arts whose energy fuels our ongoing commitment to cross-disciplinary cultural production,” said Alan Faena. “The city has been home to our programming for several years and will inspire artists to push their boundaries and envision their most ambitious, thought-provoking projects to date.” Miami is a land built on diaspora identities, shared cultures and a fleeting population— the new edition invites artists to

reflect on the concept of home as individuals and as a community. It also summons artists across genres to explore how as a society we are consciously striving to engage and coexist with nature in greater harmony. The nominating committee and jury features an esteemed panel of curators and museum directors from around the world including the curator of the Venice Biennale and the director of the Art Institute at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel, Switzerland. The winning proposal will receive a US $100,000 prize with US $25,000 in unrestricted funds awarded directly to the artist and the remaining US $75,000 will be allocated towards the production of the temporary installation on Faena Beach during Miami Art Week for the public to experience free of charge.

Blending Art and Science Into the Great Dying: Waters We Share, the latest site-specific installation at Faena Art’s Project Room from Brazilian environmental artist Beatriz Chachamovits, immerses viewers in the beauty, fragility and destruction of the ocean’s coral reefs. Chachamovits’ acclaimed body of work is a response to extensive scientific research to understand the underwater world and the problematic phenomena caused by rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification and plastic pollution. “After I do deep dives into scientific studies, talk to specialists and observe the corals first-hand, I create works that communicate what’s really happening inside the ocean,” explains the artist. “For example, the majority of my sculptures are white. This happened when
I understood the significance of coral bleaching and its devastating repercussions.” Climate change has been identified as the leading cause of coral bleaching and once corals die, entire reef systems and all the wildlife they support become endangered. The exhibition, which took more than a year to complete, features 17 coral structures made entirely by hand using a ceramic technique called handbuilding. A small piece takes around five days to build, while larger sculptures typically take more than two weeks due to the level of detail. “My goal is to create the feeling corals elicit by portraying the vast array of species, textures and shapes that exist in a reef.” To encourage viewers to become aware and
reflect on the reality that how they walk on the earth impacts reef ecosystems, Chachamovits covered the exhibition floor with slabs of unfired clay hidden under a blanket of sand. As guests move closer to each sculpture, they’ll feel the clay crush beneath their feet. “When you invite the public to interact with the artwork, it becomes more deeply imprinted in their memory and hopefully stays with them long after they’ve left the exhibition,” explains Chachamovits. “My aim is that once people are back in the natural world, they’ll be more cognizant of how their behavior might be harmful to the environment and inspire action that cares for the oceans and coral reefs, and consequentially, the whole planet.”
“I want people to be aware
that the choices they make as individuals and the way we behave as a society influences the health of the ocean no matter where they live because we’re all connected through water.” —BEATRIZ CHACHAMOVITS

The neo-disco rink designed by Eli Sudbrack, of avaf, featured a sound booth at its center manned by a roster of prominent DJs including DJ Pony, Richie Hell and Gazelle who set a celebratory vibe while attendees skated in view of the ocean under a sunset sky. “Through Faena Art programming we create a place for a diversity of voices where various communities from Miami can experience a cultural exchange,” said Alan Faena. “This unique type of experimental programming encourages new dialogues, which is at the core of Faena Art’s mission.”

Stephens, a recording artist, songwriter and producer in her own right, is also a saucy chanteuse known for her Vegas-style theatrics reminiscent of old Broadway musicals and her ability to put a pop spin on classic standards like Why Don’t You Do Right, Blank Space and What Lola Wants. “I’m your Billie Holiday, your Diana Ross,” she says of her soft, bluesy vocal range. “I’m going to tease the heck out of you all night. It’s going to feel like someone blowing soft kisses in your ear. That’s my forte.” “I don’t perform for people,” she explains, “I perform to them.” Which is what Stephens’ loves most about cabaret: the intimacy, the connection, the energetic exchange. “I make sure the audience is involved by intentionally throwing all of my energy, my physical movement and sound into their space so they get what they need that night, which is the reason why they came.” As a Miami local, Stephens is a regular patron at Faena Theater and is honored to join such a high-caliber cast, show and performing arts collective that continually impresses her as an audience member. “First and foremost, I am in love with this theater,” she says. “It’s better than Vegas!” As for Quixotic, she loves the collective’s progressive futuristic style and use of projection mapping. “Their shows are like moving modern art,” she says. “And I am a throwback, which is a nice contrast. I hope to bring that classic cabaret element—the smokey spotlight shining on a woman in a beautiful dress that’s captivating the crowd.” Speaking of dresses, Stephens has spent the last five years curating her costumes, many of which are custom. She works with a local couture house whose celebrity tailor brings her designs to life. Expect old

Hollywood glamour with white Marylin Monroe-inspired gowns, diamonds, feathers and rhinestones. “They’re elegant, not flashy,” she notes. “I am your classic night out” says Stephens. “I want to bring people back to the Golden Age of Miami when you had Dean and Frankie performing here and you got dressed up to see a really solid performer who is going to connect with you.” Combine that with Tryst’s immersive vignettes featuring live instrumental and contemporary music, jaw-dropping cirque arts and provocative storytelling, the summer season promises to be a smash hit.

BIG BANG
A Curator’s Eye Big Bang, a globallyinspired boutique located within Tierra Santa Healing House, carries a diverse collection of one-ofa-kind fashions.
New this season is a whimsical bridal corner adorned with giant roses. Guests will find handembellished gowns from the House of Matching Colors, a couture brand founded by the store’s curator Paula Selby Avellaneda. “The dresses embody fantasy and femininity with embroidered detailing and delicate materials like Silk Dupioni,” she explains. Brides can also collaborate with Selby at Big Bang to design the dress of their dreams. “It’s a very couture experience, building the dress in the mirror using traditional draping techniques.” The bridal section also features ready-to-wear cotton and lace outfits from New York-based designer Maia Bergman. Don’t miss Parisian designer Iris Noble’s handcrafted leather bags made from alligator and lizard skins. “They’re the most high-end small leather accessories you can find,” says Selby. For sportier fashions, shoppers can scope out T-shirts and hoodies from Alan Faena’s new clothing line Architecture of Being, as well as an Arsenale Sportswear pop-up tied to the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix in May featuring neon-yellow track suits with racecar print and sports bras and leggings for women. The boutique also carries Miamibased House of Bo’s latest scents including ‘La Mar’ for women and ‘Espíritu’ for men. “The new fragrances are inspired by all types of romantic relationships,” notes Selby. Alongside Tierra Santa’s sacred oil collection, guests can pick up firming face serums from the sustainable beauty line Costa Brazil. Selby explains that “the ingredients used in the oils, serums and creams are 100% naturally harvested in Brazil in a way that promotes preservation.” MAIA BERGMAN

LOS FUEGOS BY FRANCIS MALLMANN
Garden to Grill Hot off the press, Francis Mallmann’s latest cookbook ‘Green Fire’ puts garden-fresh fruits and vegetables to the mercy of the flame until they’re utterly irresistible. At his restaurant Los Fuegos, epicures fall under the spell of a live-fire that transforms locavore ingredients into a medley of flavors and textures that pleases all palates.
Beets are buried in fiery coals—a technique called rescoldo— then topped with housemade pistachio yogurt, crisp arugula, shallot vinaigrette and garlic chips. Hunks of wood-fired cabbage are stuffed with rice, wild mushrooms and slathered in sesame cream and roasted walnuts. Then there’s artichokes chargrilled to perfection with a sprinkling of sourdough breadcrumbs, toasted sesame seeds and a drizzle of preserved lemon, while fungi lovers swoon over a plate of wood-fired wild mushrooms, smoked ricotta and salsa verde. “The most important thing for us is to source the best quality ingredients and choose the correct fire technique for each one,” says Sebastián Benítez, a protégé of Mallmann’s and executive chef of Los Fuegos. Benítez employs the traditional open-fire techniques that Mallmann poularized including a

cast-iron grate set over hot coals, a wood-burning oven for roasting and baking and an eight-foot iron dome encircling a blazing fire. “Our plant-based dishes are as delicious and substantial as a steak,” notes Benítez. “As culinary paradigms continue to shift, Los Fuegos is adapting its menu by adding more and more vegetarianvegan options.’ The restaurant’s weekend asados are an authentic way to sample both veggie-forward dishes and buttery cuts of grassfed beef like bife de lomo, vacío, entraña and bife de chorizo, all slow-roasted atop glowing embers. It’s also a memorable way for families to spend Mother’s and Father’s Day. “Coming together for a meal is an important part of Latin American culture,” Benítez says. “We strive to make it special, especially when you’re celebrating someone you love.”

El Secreto Omakase The most thrilling dining experience of the season is unfolding in speakeasy style at El Secreto, a private pocketsized bar hidden within Faena Miami Beach. The Omakase experience designed by James Beard Awardwinning chef Paul Qui blends Tokyostyle sushi and Kyoto-style kaiseki into a distinctive tasting menu that’s prepared and served in an interactive format.
“Now my sushi
“The inspiration for the experience is my passion for sushi,” says Qui. “I started my career in the hopes of one day being able to present such a place as El Secreto where I can serve the best product with the best technique and the best ideas of sushi I’ve had over the years.” In Japan, the term ‘omakase’ refers to respectfully leaving another to decide what is best, or in gastronomic speak: chef’s selection. Qui’s cooking has been heavily influenced by extensive training in Japanese cuisine at home and abroad. His gusto for sushi blossomed early in his culinary journey when he helped Tyson Cole establish Uchi restaurant in Austin before launching the first high-end omakase eatery in Texas. “Now my sushi journey hits its crescendo with the introduction of El Secreto at Faena.” Qui adds, “We have one focus for this omakase experience and that’s simply to deliver the highest-quality seafood from around the world,” explains Qui. “A lot of these relationships have been cultivated over the past two decades of serving some of the freshest fish in the world.” There
will be two menus to choose from: one built around line-caught fish flown in daily and another featuring innovative vegetable dishes. “On the sushi menu,” he notes, “some highlights include sea urchin from Hokkaido, sustainable bluefin tuna from Baja and Sanuki Olive Wagyu from Kagawa Prefecture in Japan.” The cattle in this region are fed olive mash giving the beef more umami flavor than a regular A5 cut. A list of top-shelf spirits ranges from small-batch sakes, beers and wine to Champagne and craft cocktails like Absinthe Minded, mixed with Grey Goose vodka, Cocchi Americano, StGermain, sour orange and Vieux Pontarlier Absinthe, and perennial favorite: Smoke & Sparks, an elixir of Roca Patrón Reposado tequila, Del Maguey ‘Vida’ mezcal, jalapeño, and lime. The Art Deco design is as exquisite as it gets with a four-seat showpiece bronze bar, a parquet floor and onyxblack walls inlaid with intricate gilded artworks from talented Argentine artists Juan Gatti and Amaya Bouquet. “The experience will be unforgettable,” says Qui.

THE LIVING ROOM
The Magic Touch Miami’s sexiest nightlife curator Chez Monique Johnson is responsible for creating the feel-good energy that makes Faena’s Living Room the most soughtafter gathering spot in the city.
“For me, the Living Room is a magical wonderland where people can let their hair down, dance, chill, eat, drink and meet interesting people,” Johnson says. “My goal is to consistently set a tone that allows people to enjoy themselves in an intimate atmosphere where they don’t have to worry about anything.” “The Living Room is in a category of its own,” explains Johnson. “It’s a work of art: from entering through the curtains, to the chandeliers to the leopard sculptures to the music.” Johnson
used to be a regular at the lounge before she assumed charge of the door. “As an entrepreneur, I love that you can hold a business meeting here by day and slip into something fancy and enjoy live entertainment, craft cocktails and beautifully plated small bites by night.” Saying “no” is Johnson’s greatest challenge. “Nine out of 10 times it’s a capacity issue,” she explains. “It’s our guests who create the cool vibe the Living Room is best known for. My job is to make sure the energy is right and the crowd is eclectic.”

With his new book, Architecture of Being, Alan Faena shares with the world the guiding principles that have shaped his own journey and the urban marvels he’s created.
Architecture of Being A C O L L E C T I O N O F I N T I M AT E R E F L E C T I O N S B Y A L A N FA E N A
“For me, Creation is the invention of everything. It’s the cosmic flow, the seed of all things, the intelligence in everything created. It’s the generating matrix of life. Wrapped in its Silence, it advances in pure Present, manifesting itself perfectly and irresistibly.”
A vast many-faced being that builds us up and tears us down, it fires our search for knowledge, constantly regenerating in each of its beings. It is Creation itself that provides us with the endeavors and opportunities to approach it in a more elevated, more perfect way. Every being carries in its soul Creation’s message of evolution and connection to the whole. Creation’s fire lives inside us. Its motion makes us part of its wholeness and drives us ever onward. Creation is reflected in all that’s created, and all that’s created is mirrored in Creation. We aren’t all the same. We don’t wrestle with the same issues. Each of us discovers their own inner geographies. We dwell at different levels of Creation and travel at different altitudes. Our individual traits help us to envision our own ways of authentically building and walking the Path through our lives, and even to outline a possible destination.
