Miami Art Week: A Prizeworthy Moment
During Faena Art ’s Annual Gala on November 10, the winner of the highly coveted 2022 Faena Prize for the Arts was announced in Miami for the first time since its launch in Buenos Aires more than a decade ago. Internationally recognized for encouraging post-disciplinary artistic exploration, the Faena Prize for the Arts, presented by Bombay Sapphire, serves as a platform for continued reflection on the present moment and its everchanging nature. This year’s open call championed multidisciplinary artists to imagine site-sensitive, temporary works in dialogue with Faena Beach while engaging with the cultural and urban landscape of the city of Miami.
The winning proposal Paula de Solminihac’s Morning Glory— chosen by a jury of art world luminaries including Cecilia Alemani (curator of the 59th Venice Biennale); Caroline Bourgeois (chief curator of the Pinault Collection); cultural place-maker Ximena Caminos; artist Alexandre Arrechea; Chus Martínez (Director Art Institute at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Basel); and José Roca (artistic director of the 23rd Biennale of Sydney)—is a completely immersive and community driven art installation that will debut on Faena Beach during Miami Art Week 2022. People will be able to activate it in unique ways and there will be plenty of programming and workshops that use the artwork as a space for community engagement.
The gala, whose theme this year was “Patterns of Paradise,” featured an artistic intervention by
“This year’s unparalleled programming during Miami Art Week 2022 is a testament to our long-lasting commitment to innovative cultural production,” said Alan Faena.
Xander Ferreira that transformed the night into an all-encompassing performance that explored the interconnectivity between all cultures. There was also a performance by Kiani del Valle, a Puerto Rican-born, Berlinbased transmedial movement artist, choreographer, director and performance curator. Selling out shows at Berlin’s prestigious Funkhaus venue, del Valle’s work combines an assortment of disciplines but ultimately aims to disrupt classical notions of dance and explore authentic movement as a means of expression. A DJ set by Ibiza-based Pascal Moscheni closed out the night.
On the occasion of Miami Art Week 2022, Faena Art brings Quayola’s Effets de Soir to the Faena Art Project Room. Presented in partnership with Aorist – a nextgeneration cultural institution
supporting artists creating at the edge of art and technology – Effets de Soir is a video-based series that explores a new form of digitalized Impressionism. The painting-like video is created through digital manipulation of ultra-high-resolution photographs of flowers from the lush gardens of Château de Chaumont-surLoire, a 10th-century French Castle, photographed at night under artificial spotlights.
Aorist is also partnering with Faena Art to showcase Living Room , a newly commissioned project by revolutionary collective Random International. Bridging large-scale experiential art with web3 technology, the ambitious project invites visitors to experience a labyrinth-like installation, representing an architectural organism composed of shifting lights, fog, and sound elements
that respond to the audience’s movements in unpredictable ways. Living Room ’s motion sensors and complex software constantly capture and record data as people move through the installation in real time, which generate unique digital assets that visitors can mint on Aorist’s marketplace as unique NFTs of their pathway through the installation by using their entry ticket ID.
Within Faena Miami Beach’s Cathedral, The Reefline will feature the unveiling of British artist Petroc Sesti’s arwork, Heart of Okeanos, in collaboration with Faena Art and CarbonXinc. The sculpture is a life-size replica of a beached Blue Whale, which the artist will return to the ocean, transforming it into an artificial reef seeded with living corals, as part of the ambitious new public art project, the ReefLine—an artificial reef and seven-mile snorkel trail that will
start construction early next year. Another highlight of the week is Patria y Vida , a large-scale light sculpture by Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares, presented in collaboration with No Vacancy from November 17 to December 8 at Faena Beach. Inspired by the events that occurred last year in Cuba on July 11th, when Cubans were imprisoned after protesting illegally for the first time in almost 30 years, and the Pro-Democracy protests in Hong Kong, the artwork uses 18 crowd-control barricades with LED lights bound together in a disorderly composition to memorialize nonviolent resistance. The work marks Faena’s second collaboration with the City of Miami Beach and the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA), where local artists are paired with hotels to showcase their art during Miami Art Week.
The Allure of Rocky Lanes’ Musical Multiverse
If you’re looking for a great party in Miami, singer Rocky Lanes is emceeing the best one in town. Allura, Faena Theater ’s new vanguard cabaret, is an invitation to the starlet’s multiverse where her vocals alchemize with live guitar riffs from Cuban instrumentalist Alberto Torres and a choreographed ensemble of magnetic performances.
“Allura is different from any show we’ve ever done,” says Shane Borth, the music director of Quixotic, an innovative performance art collective. “It focuses heavily on music, technology and every style of dance you can imagine. It’s still very much a cabaret, but very sexy, very modern and very shiny. There’s a lot of disco, funk and 80s vibes.” The throughline for the show’s score is an expression of Rocky’s powerhouse voice. “I have a huge range,” says Lanes. “I’m a high soprano to a tenor, so I take it very high to very low.”
Borth paired Lanes and Torres because he knew their energy together would be palpable. “They’re an amazing duo, the two are really going to bring amazing life to the show,” he said. Ten live tracks run the gambit from Elvis and Abba to Grimes and Janelle Monae. It’s the first time a show from Quixotic or Faena Theater will feature a lead guitar act. “Their duets will be a lot of fun, mashing up music and medleys like a Fugees song with guitar licks from The Jackson 5,” he said. The audience should also expect a lot of interaction and musical improvisation, which keeps performances fresh and entertaining.
“The show is going to move people because good music hits the soul,” said Lanes. “It brings together all ages and races. It doesn’t matter if it’s blues, Latin, rock and roll—if it’s good music it will touch everybody.”
Quixotic is known for its peerless ability to blend performance art, technology, original music and cirque cabaret acts into an immersive experience that takes viewers on a journey to the boundaries of reality. Lasers, lighting fixtures, hypnotic projections and special effects create an entirely novel ambience with a nouveau look. “We use a lot of new props,” said Borth.
“Since we wanted to do something unlike anything we’ve done before, we created a custom aerial apparatus that is very supple and flowy and will feature a performance from two of our principal dancers,” Borth explained. They’ve also introduced a new aerial pole, and a vignette from Duo Fusion, a mind-bending contortionist act from a husband-and-wife duo.
Disco-inspired costumes will throw light across the crowd like a party at Studio 54. “I’m well-known for my platform boots,” stated Lanes. “They’re going to shine like a disco ball.
“When you walk into my party, you leave your problems at the door,” said Lanes. “You’re here to feel like you’re living your best life.”
Made in Colombia
Colombian womenswear designer, Silvia Tcherassi’s spring 2023 collection brings a bright autumn color palette and new seasonal classics made with innovative materials to the ready-to-wear mix at Faena Bazaar.
“Miami is an eclectic and cosmopolitan city, very much like my designs,” said Tcherassi. “My line’s casual luxury aesthetic goes hand-in-hand with the city.” As one of the first Latinx female designers to take her brand internationally, Tcherassi’s eponymous label is celebrated for its high-quality textiles and construction, attention to detail, and designs that standout for their effortless elegance.
The latest collection was inspired by artist Mark Rothko’s work and makes use of color blocking and light layering. “Similar to Rothko, I am always attempting to create a sort of color field for the expression of emotions,” explained Tcherassi. “Warmth, audacity and subtleness were words that continued to come to mind throughout my creative process.”
The pieces embody the foundation of distinct femininity upon which Tcherassi founded her brand, while continuing to expand her command of vibrant colors. Fashion lovers will pore over her classic silhouettes crafted with fabrics like heavier silks and jacquards, which allow for structure.
“Silvia Tcherassi’s shirts are an elevated and eye-catching essential,” noted Danielle Licata, co-founder of Curio at Faena Bazaar. “They are so versatile and can easily transition from day to night with the right accessories.” She recommends pairing them with earrings from Leticia Linton, perfectly on-trend shoes from GIABORGHINI, and a clutch from Cult Gaia.
A Holiday Away
Perfectly set up for families, kids from six to sixteen can make lasting holiday memories at Faena Play. Thanksgiving will bring a host of new activities rooted in art, culinary, theater, sports and wellness experiences that will be on offer throughout the holidays. Budding chefs can shadow our culinary team in the kitchen to decorate cookies and cupcakes, make an ice cream sunday, and learn how to prepare pizza and pasta. Or they can spend an afternoon with Faena mixologists to stir, shake and pour delicious mocktails with unique flavors or blend tropical smoothies with locally sourced ingredients. It’s never too early for kids to learn the art of self-care. At the spa, kids can take superbrain yoga classes and learn how to play with prana in therapeutic energy sessions led by expert therapists. On the beach, sandcastle building, beach bubbles and art projects make for a fun afternoon in the sun, as do friendly volleyball competitions, cornhole tournaments and limbo contests.
Takeover one of Faena’s multibedroom suites with dreamy ocean views and wraparound terraces to enjoy the blissful salty breezes that roll off the Atlantic this time of year. Suites come with spacious living rooms and six-seat dining tables where the family can gather for private meals, enjoy holiday movies and spend quality time with one another.
Decadent festive feasts can be had at Los Fuegos, where live-fire cooking reigns supreme, or at Pao, where Asian twists on traditional holiday meals take guests on a sybaritic journey through a menu of unexpected flavors. In the evenings, kids can head to the screening room for pajamas-and-popcorn movie nights and enjoy post-flick hot chocolate and ‘smores, while parents let loose with craft cocktails and live music performances in the Living Room or catch Faena Theater ’s latest show Allura, a multiverse of Miami brought to life through the showstopping vocals of Rocky Lanes and Cuban guitarist Alberto Torres.
From weekend-long spiritual retreats and meditating with a Buddhist monk to nourishing Biologique Recherche facials and a new Amazon Rainforest inspired body ritual, the spa offers profound ways to engage in self-care and healing.
Freedom, life, openness, and wellness are the principles behind Tierra Santa’s first-ever F.L.O.W Spiritual Retreat taking place on October 28-30 at Tierra Santa Healing House, which includes a three-night stay at Faena Hotel Mami Beach. “The purpose is to release yourself from all external obligations and learn techniques that will help you live a balanced life in control of your emotions and your thoughts, and gain physical and mental strength,” said Agustina Caminos, Faena’s spa director. The retreat, also returning January 6-8 blends various healing modalities that support spiritual, mental, emotional and physical evolution. Days are filled with yoga classes, oceanside meditations, mantra chanting, massages and delicious vegetarian cuisine, while afternoon and evenings are dedicated to Pranic Healing workshops and sound healings in the marble hammam. “All of these practices teach participants how to cultivate and maintain clean and strong energy.”
On November 19th, the spa will welcome Sri Lankan Buddhist monk Bhante Sujatha who will lead a meditation workshop focused on lovingkindness. His approach to meditation is deep and simple, sharing core Buddhist teachings in a way that is practical and easy to understand so participants can further awaken to the blessings of the present moment and welcome insights into one’s life purpose.

The winter season at Tierra Santa Healing House is a time for retreating inward, for replenishment, and for reflection.
The Secret Ingredient
“Most omakases are predictable—you know what will happen step-by-step if you’ve already been once. Here, it’s completely unpredictable,” she added.
Chef Reiji Yoshizawa turns to his Filipino-Japanese roots and international culinary experience to put his own unique stamp on El Secreto’s speakeasy omakase experience, which features fresh fish flown in from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market several times weekly and domestic fish sourced from the Gulf of Maine including the Mere Point Oysters and bluefin tuna.
“The last time I was here, the oyster was my favorite dish. It was deliciously crunchy with crispy prosciutto,” explained Diem. “Tonight, it had a soft texture, but it was exploding with flavor in a totally different direction, and I enjoyed them both equally.”
Her husband, Oleg Koltunov, pored over the virtues of Chef Yoshizawa’s Medai (Japanese Butterfish) with lemon and miso garlic. “If I close my eyes, I would think I’m eating a smokey
chargrilled A5 Wagyu filet, but it’s fish. It is so rich and unexpected.”
The menu kicks off with an all-new amuse bouche of grilled peaches, Burrata espuma, smoked trout roe and shiso. “This dish has an international mix of flavors and the caviar pops in your mouth. The peaches weren’t overly sweet, they added a hint of delicate flavor and texture without overpowering the pungent smokiness of the trout caviar, which bursts with flavor,” explained Diem.
Other new additions include the shima aji (striped jack), buro (Filipino fermented rice) and tomato confit, as well as the tako ashi (giant octopus) cooked in squid ink adobo sauce, garlic aioli, and crispy quinoa. “It’s a Filipino style bite that’s very garlicky, and on the sour and salty side with a nice crunch,” said Chef Yoshizawa.
“I’m toying with the idea of making the new King Crab dish with smoked butter and Japanese lime a menu staple. For now, that will remain a secret,” Chef Yoshizawa said with a sly smile.
“What keeps bringing me back to El Secreto is that the food and atmosphere are a surprise every time. It’s never the same,” said Amanda Diem, a Faena Rose member enjoying a 16-course omakase tasting menu at the six-seat onyx and gold-leaf bar.
Sea Change
“I’ve always been known for my seafood and raw product,” says Qui, whose fish market restaurant Golfstrømmen in Houston (a joint venture with Norwegian chef Christopher Haatuft) was just lauded as the best restaurant in the city by acclaimed food critic Alison Cook. “So, I think it’s the appropriate time to reintroduce that to Pao for our next iteration.”
Diners will be able to select from a bevy of fresh catch including Maine scallops and lobsters, sea urchin from Santa Barbara, Florida
stone crab, and Gulf Coast snapper and swordfish. “We will also have a selection of oysters from all American coasts, plus a healthy choice of caviar,” Qui noted.
Qui is passionate about working with responsible purveyors who are minimizing their environmental impact and transparent about their fishing and farming methods. “It’s important to know where we’re sourcing our seafood from and understanding how it gets to Pao and on a plate in front of our guests,” he explained.
A few of Qui’s preferred vendors include The Santa Barbara Fish Market, which provides highquality wild harvested seafood and True Fin, an eco-conscious company that buys fully traceable seafood from fisherman in the Gulf of Maine. “For our signature roasted whole fish, I’m looking into Desert Springs Barramundi in the desert of Arizona which raises sustainably farmed Barramundi in a Colorado River-fed aquifer.”
The clean-tasting white fish are gently handled and fed a premium feed free of antibiotics,
hormones and additives.
Born in Manila, Philippines, Qui trained in classic French and Japanese cuisine, and takes a modernist approach towards food, marrying classical technique with local flavors while drawing inspiration from Filipino, Japanese, Spanish, and French culinary styles. With the launch of the Michelin Guide in Miami this year, Qui has stars in his eyes. “It takes a lot of discipline, focus and passion to get a Michelin star,” said the chef, “all of which our team has.”
James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Qui levels up the dining experience at Pao with a new sustainably sourced seafood program including a crudo bar and a fresh take on his Asian-inflected menu.
Cooking with Fire
To any son or daughter of Patagonia, the potato, a humble tuber, dug out of dirt, is the food that has united the cuisines of peoples who live in the shadow of the Andes from the shores of Tierra del Fuego to the highlands of Peru, explains Mallmann in Green Fire. The trajectory of his life has been shaped by this South American food staple, which inspired him to turn from cooking French haute cuisine and return to the fiery roots of Andean cooking. On the menu, the Osetra caviar dish makes use of crispy potato skins with a dash of mascarpone, a smoked quail egg and chives.
Wood-fired eggplant (accompanied by smoked eggplant yogurt, tomato chutney, tahini and
crispy buckwheat with a fresh herb salad) is an ingredient Mallmann first came into daily contact with over an extended stay in the Greek Island of Mykonos during his youth. “In one way or another they always found their way to the table,” he remembers. “Their creaminess, their smokiness, their ability to form friendships with other ingredients were a revelation to me, and I have cooked with them ever since.”
From leaf to heart to stem, artichokes can be braised, roasted or grilled over a wood fire and play the role of a loving but never overbearing companion to herbs, spices and fresh vegetables, Mallmann muses. Los Fuegos serves up a mouthwatering dish of
crispy artichokes with potato and garlic cream, a soft egg and zaatar (Syrian oregano).
Other additions include butternut squash with black truffle and parmesan cream with crunchy pumpkin seeds and pistachio crumble; wood-fired caciocavallo cheese, honey and mustard seed vinaigrette over a tart apple and radicchio salad; and endives with stilton cheese, pear and vanilla confiture, red onion and roasted hazelnuts.
According to Mallmann, cooking with fire demands both simplicity and perfection. Fire pushes fruits and vegetables to such peak flavor, it’s as they’d never been truly tasted before.”
The fine dining temple of Los Fuegos from Argentine grillmaster Francis Mallmann is where one can find a bounty of flavor-packed vegetables smoked, grilled and charred to perfection. The restaurants latest menu takes inspiration from the chef’s recently released vegetarian cookbook: Green Fire.
A New Year’s Eve for the Disco Queens and Kings
Glitz, glamour and glitter will sparkle in abundance, and overthe-top evening of culinary feasts, live entertainment and musical acts will be steeped in retro disco fun. General admission includes bottomless champagne and cocktails, Tree of Life and Sun Bar access, live music and entertainment, and Faena’s New Year’s Eve countdown and firework spectacle when the clock strikes midnight. Special menus for a multicourse dinner at Los Fuegos or Pao also come with an open bar offering, live music and access to the Mammoth Garden to toast the year ahead under a dazzling display of Gatsby-worthy pyrotechnics that will light up the star-studded sky.
Dust off your sequin bellbottoms and white leisure suits and hustle your way over to Faena for a night of disco fever on New Year’s Eve.
“When I first started curating music for The Living Room in 2015, everyone thought Miami was a city devoid of live music,” said Lista. “So I went to a lot of shows and started asking artists I liked if they’d play at Faena .” Since then, The Living Room has hosted more than 20 rotating bands and has become a sought-after venue to enjoy music as varied as pop, bossa nova, jazz and Latin funk.
Friday nights come alive with beats from DJ Yissel, who is perpetually in-demand for her extensive knowledge and deep appreciation of music and ability to seamlessly blend house, hip-hop and R&B in any given set. “I love her vibe and style,” said Lista.
“We’re also working with artist Javier Garcia prepping his new repertoire and band additions,” Lista explained. “Moving forward, the bands are going to be presented more in line with a concert experience where the performance plays with tension and expectation.”
Handsome crooner Louis Amanti will command the room on Saturday nights with a new collection of Elvis Presley songs played in a jazzy swing style. Lista noted that Amanti’s Tuesday night residency will keep to a more classic and jazz-oriented set list with songs that The Living Room guests know and love.
Sundays are reserved for the French Horn Collective. “Their following has grown Sunday after Sunday, and they’ve created an authentic Paris in Miami vibe that our guests really enjoy.”
Weekdays round out the line up with Wednesday live DJ sets that will bend more towards funk and soul with some pop classics. On Thursdays, guests can groove to acoustic guitarist Carlos Andrade and his World Music trio. “His music blends jazz, pop and flamenco in an original way,” said Lista,“which epitomizes the fusion of sounds we aim to create in The Living Room .”

Gin and Tonic
Bombay Sapphire Gin accentuates the bright and vibrant flavors in the same way Faena accentuates art and music. The gin carries beautiful flavors of juniper, citrus, heat, spice, and floral notes, just like Miami. This twist on a classic gin and tonic features Bombay Sapphire Gin, Green Chartreuse, fresh lime juice, all of which pair perfectly with Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water
Holidays in Casa
Raise a glass to the holiday season at Casa Faena, where legendary playwright Tennessee Williams once stayed and famously introduced a toast at sunset. The hotel’s historical roots are reflected in its Spanish Colonial architecture dating back to the 1930s, best showcased in the property’s sun-drenched courtyard atrium, wrought iron balconies and terracotta touches.
The bohemian sibling to Faena Hotel Miami Beach’s polished panache, Casa Faena is a favorite haunt among artists, writers and photographers who gather together on the courtyard’s sunken couches surrounded by arched bookshelves and stainedglass windows. Upstairs, airy rooms are furnished with ornately carved beds, hand-stitched throw blankets and antique carpets. Book yourself an oceanfront room on the top floor to soak in fresh sea breezes coming off the Atlantic.
Staying at Casa Faena gives guests direct access to the hotel’s buzzy Gitano restaurant and lively ocean-view rooftop bar. The ground-floor restaurant, a lush oasis of tropical greenery dishing up authentic Mexican cuisine with a side of Tulum allure, is perfect for a light lunch or a fashionable dinner amid honed-and-toned clientele. Cocktails are a specialty. Sip mezcal elixirs like Gitano’s signature Jungle Fever on the wraparound palm-filled veranda or head to the rooftop for live DJ sets while kicking back in one of the blackand-white striped Bedouin tents.

Architecture of Being
A COLLECTION OF INTIMATE REFLECTIONS BY ALAN FAENA“Silence is the sound of creative intelligence. In Silence we begin, and through Silence we’re reunited with all its creations.”
Silence is our state, the connection with Creation. In Silence, all our actions are purer. You have to observe in Silence and contemplate your own optic in its peace if you want to perceive the coherence of the Path, which is the coherence of life itself.
In movement, Silence is an action that sustains an unbroken line. This is the Path being drawn. It walks with us toward wisdom and understanding. It makes us more powerful. When we listen to it, we access our deepest world. Silence is freedom. It allows us to navigate the ocean of possibility, where every story leads us to live consistently with our evolution and create our own identity. Silence is devotion to the instant, to time without time. It reveals our Weaknesses and the wisdom to understand them.
