FAENA JOURNAL

Miami Art Week Faena’s long history of serving as a stage for artistic talent will once again reach a global audience as the Faena District hosts some of the world’s most celebrated visual artists.

Kicking off December 4th and running through December 10th, Miami Art Week, now in its 17th year, welcomes over 70,000 visitors from around the world to join in a celebration of contemporary and modern art. In keeping with Faena’s mission to serve the community and create spaces for experimentation and social interaction, Faena District Miami Beach’s series of site-specific art commissions are free and open to the public. At Faena Beach, artist and RISD graduate Phillip K Smith III will present his reflective piece, The Circle of Land and Sky, an artwork that features mirrored steel structural elements, which disappear and meld into the pure elements of water and sky. As the light shifts from dawn to dusk, the viewer moves through the installation in which land, water and sky are separated, merged, and displaced, subverting one’s assumed relationship with the horizon and natural boundaries. It is a constantly morphing installation that can never be seen the same way twice. Over at the Faena Forum, Miami-based multidisciplinary artist Kelly Breez and science/ art collective Coral Morphologic are going

to deliver a series of 3D Mapping projections, which will illuminate the art center’s circular OMA-designed façade, providing everyone who passes through the Faena District a powerful visual experience.

Faena Art presents an evening of works-in-process and new experiments by Argentine artists working with gesture, music, ritual and dance at Faena Art Center Buenos Aires. To celebrate the launch of the program, Art Basel Cities: Buenos Aires, Faena Art invites local artists to occupy the Faena Art Center Buenos Aires to explore new collaborations and practices over the course of one entire day towards the creation of a new work. Cecilia Bengolea explores the connections between

contemporary and folkloric practices in her investigations of the cumbia while positioning the presence of the digital body through a live transmission of her own body as she performs from the distance. Jimena Croceri's investigation utilizes the inherent qualities of naturally occurring elements of earth and water as they

SECOND SUNDAYS As part of its mission to maintain culture at the heart of Faena District, Faena will host Second Sundays on November 12 at Faena Forum.

Faena Miami Beach will present the third installment of Second Sundays with ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces, an immersive, participatory and site-specific art installation created by contemporary artist duo assume vivid astro focus (avaf) that reimagines the traditional roller dancing rink as part of its mission to curate community-based cultural programming. For this installment, Second Sundays welcomes a series of new performers, live music acts, and a roller dancing class for beginners. Among them Miami Quad Squad, TM Sisters, DJ Paperwater, and many more. Filtrating popular culture and quotidian communal practices, Pica alters their context and exposes them as culturally relevant aesthetic proposals within the contemporary art viewing space. Here she intervenes the space with both video and a live performance by three musicians, proposing the remediation of previously documented material with the performing body. NOV

A biennial international juried prize, the Faena Prize for the Arts recognizes artistic experimentation, encourages post-disciplinary and temporal exploration, and promotes inquiry of the infinite links among art, technology and design. This year, artists are asked to rethink the space of Faena Art Center Buenos Aires from perspectives based on time and duration. The goal is to summon multidisciplinary artists from across the world to imagine site-sensitive works that dialogue not only with the monumental architecture of the building but also with the cultural and urban conditions of its immediate surroundings. Alan Faena, Founder and President of Faena Group said, “The Faena Prize is a building block of our ethos, and an example of our lasting commitment to multidisciplinary cultural production as the core and heart of the Faena District. We aim to identify and support the newest, boldest and most cutting-edge artists from around the world.” Under the coordination of Ximena Caminos, Chair and Artistic Director of FAENA ART,

A MONTH FOR YOUR SKIN BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR We all want to look our best for the holidays, and the holidays are right around the corner. So what can you do now to get your skin in tip-top shape?

Sharing and collaborating —natural movements of the creative being

In addition to an effective daily skin care regimen including a topical antioxidant (Vitamin C is my favorite), a nightly collagen stimulator such as retinoids and/ or growth factors, and a sunscreen with physical blockers, here is your 30-day treatment plan to get your skin on track. WEEK 1 Time to cleanse and prep the skin. Consider a gentle lactic acid exfoliating peel or a low strength glycolic acid peel. These hydroxy acid peels will help to open your pores and remove dirt and oil, allowing at-home products to penetrate more effectively. WEEK 2 Consider an IPL treatment. IPL, or ‘Intense Pulsed Light,’ is great for brightening of your skin and color blending. It helps to fade discoloration such as sun spots and melasma and can help to minimize rosy cheeks and broken capillaries. It takes approximately a week for your skin to fully settle from the treatment and therefore should not be done too close to your goal date. WEEK 3 This is the ideal time to do a plasma facial. Plasma facials are best known for collagen stimulation, meaning softening of fine lines and wrinkles, but I also swear by them for softening of dyspigmentation, particularly melasma. When done a week after your IPL treatment, plasma facials help to lift the damaged pigment that has made its way to your skin’s surface. This leaves your skin brighter, smoother and more even-toned. WEEK 4 Now is the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Keep it simple and focus on hydration and sun protection. This will keep your skin plump, radiant and flawless.

Tierra Santa Spa Day Dedicated to the art of living well, Tierra Santa Healing House is launching a menu of eight full-day chakrabalancing experiences that combine restorative body therapies, vegetarian cuisine, beauty treatments, yoga, meditation and Pranic Healing. Chakra, which literally translates to “wheel” or “disk” in Sanskrit, is a term that refers to the wheels of energy and corresponding nerve hubs located throughout the body. There are seven main chakras, or psychic-energy centers, that start at the base of the spine and move up to the crown of the head, which the Chopra Center describes as “swirling wheels of energy where matter and consciousness meet.” This invisible energy, often referred to as Prana, is believed to be a vital life force that keeps us healthy, vibrant and alive. The state of our chakras reflects our psychological, emotional, and spiritual well-being. They are affected by everything in and around us. If one or more of them is out of balance, our energy cannot flow freely and we experience pain, suffering and illness. To keep the chakras open and aligned, Tierra Santa Healing House has carefully curated an extensive menu of Day Spa Packages exclu-

sive to Miami residents to help identify and remove blockages and restore harmonious functioning in the body. The Crown Chakra package ($345), which supports us to live mindfully, combines yoga, purifying juice, a circuit in the hammam and sauna, a nourishing coconut oil massage, a vegetarian lunch, meditation and a beautifying blowout and manicure. There’s also experiences designed for couples and friends including the Heart Chakra for Lovers package ($590), which includes a sacred bath and couples massage. The Solar Plexus Chakra package ($560) focuses on addressing physical imbalances in third chakra with yoga, Pranic Healing, meditation, a healthy vegetarian lunch, and a Naturopatica facial treatment. For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570.

We might sometimes think that artistic or creative activity is, in essence, individualistic. The Genesis of Judeo-Christian tradition portrays a God whose decision to create the world is as vehement as the solitude in which it is located. Doctor Faustus is presented as one of the wisest men in history, but one who is also isolated from his peers. And it's possible that romanticism rounded up that impression of the artist as a character who needs to be alone to exercise his talent. However, if over the course of history human beings have demonstrated their strength because of their ability to cooperate and work together, art and creativity are no exception. Works of thought are almost always collective, despite seeming to come from the wit of a single person. Dialog is perhaps the most elementary example of this essential feature of human nature: Who could conceive a life where one could never hide his or her feelings of amazement? What's the point of an invention or a fantasy if it is not shared? In art, collaboration has been a constant behavior, a natural movement of those who might be considered extravagant and peculiar, but by instinct want to be with others like them— similar in their intellect and perhaps also in their strangeness. This includes artistic groups, currents, and movements; and to a greater degree, more intimacy and friendships, perhaps more discrete but just as fruitful when creative needs are involved. Here is glimpse at some of these pairs, groups and friends who, when sharing and dialoging, found elements that were essential to strengthen their artistic endeavors. BORGES AND BIOY The friendship between these two writers is wellknown, but few might know that they also worked together. At first Jorge Luis Borges was a sort of teacher for Adolfo Bioy Casares, but this relationship gradually changed toward camaraderie and complicity. From their years in common, several

The history of creativity abounds with characters who share their talent and strengthen it. works stand out, including crime stories starred by Bustos Domecq (a sedentary detective, according to the essential rules of the genre), Anthology of Fantastic Literature (in which Silvina Ocampo was also involved) and the monumental Borges, the book that includes the everyday encounters between both writers and the notable and incessant literary exercise that each performed whenever they met. THE EDITOR'S WORK An editor's role involves condensing an important part of the collaborative nature of literature. For example, it is known that the emblematic styles of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Raymond Carver wouldn't have achieved as much recognition if it weren't for the guidance of their editors: Maxwell Perkins for the first two and Gordon Lish for Carver. Other legends, such as Franco Maria Ricci and Gaston Gallimard in Europe, or Arnaldo Orfila and Joaquín Díez-Canedo in America, assumed that discreet yet decisive role where a writer joins forces with another until creating that unique polyphony characteristic of certain publishing companies. JOHN CAGE AND MERCE CUNNINGHAM The relationship between John Cage and Merce Cunningham produced an emotional and creative bond that had a great impact on the world of music and dance, each one's field, respectively. Among the many experiences and acts they performed in those disciplines, one that stands out is the introduction

of the concept of "random" in the choreographies of Cunningham set to Cage's music, under the idea that the interpretation could be contingent (in both cases), and also that both disciplines could coexist, but not under the strict rules of those alleged. COLLABORATIVE POETRY For several centuries, poetry was a reason for gathering more than for being alone, even in terms of writing it. In the dispute over the identity of Homer, for example, it was once assumed that the name was only an historical commodity to designate various rhapsodists that contributed to the composition of the Illiad and the Odyssey. But even without resorting to the enigma or to remote periods, this collective spirit of poetry can be found in forms such as the Japanese renga or the celebrated “exquisite corpse” invented by French surrealists. WARHOL AND BASQUIAT In 20th Century pop art, one of the most unexpected duos was created when Andy Warhol decided to sponsor Jean-Michel Basquiat, a young man whose talent when from painting graffiti on the streets of Manhattan to showing his work in the best galleries and museums. Thanks to this friendship, Warhol and Basquiat proved that the borders between different creative manifestations are more mobile and flexible than what we sometimes assume.
