Second Sundays

Faena Miami Beachis thrilled to welcome Museum of Ice Cream

As part of its mission to maintain culture at the heart of Faena District, Faena will host Second Sundays during Miami Art Week.

On December 13th, Museum of Ice Cream is opening in a swirl of color at Faena Bazaar. A site-specific experience designed to bring people together through art, imagination and innovation, this famously Instagrammable museum invites guests to lose themselves in a candy-coated world of curiosity and wonder. Since opening its first location in Los Angeles, Museum of Ice Cream has

welcomed more than half a million visitors from across the world, even attracting celebrity superstars like Beyonce, Stephen Curry and Gwyneth Paltrow to its experiential environment. At the Faena Bazaar location, guests will enjoy delectable tastings, larger-thanlife interactive installations and, of course, ice cream.

Faena Miami Beach will present the third installment of Second Sundays with ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces, an immersive, participatory and site-specific art installation created by contemporary artist duo assume vivid astro focus (avaf) that reimagines the traditional roller dancing rink as part of its mis-

sion to curate community-based cultural programming. For this installment, Second Sundays welcomes a series of new performers, live music acts, and a roller dancing class for beginners. Among the many performances lined up for this event are Miami Quad Squad, TM Sisters, DJ Paperwater, and many more.

CRICKET SHELTER. A Resource and Environmental Performance

Cricket Shelter is an urban farming system and temporary shelter that minimizes the ecological footprint of protein-rich food production. It is a well-established fact that industrialized animal agriculture accounts for one-fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions, and with global demand for meat projected to double between 2000 and 2050, the industry’s space requirements constitute one of the most significant drivers for deforestation in the world. This project proposes an alternative: with 1% of the greenhouse gas emissions and requiring 0.001% of the land to produce the same amount of protein annually as cattle farming, environmental destruction need no longer be the consequence of ensuring our food supply. It operates as a hybrid typology providing an ultrahygienic farming method for consumption of insects. As a modular structural system, it lends itself to simple construction and deconstruction in various site-specific orientations, making it easy to educate consumers on use and maintenance. As a shared farming system, in the spirit of community gardens, it contributes to the formation of inclusive, socially viable environments and the sustainable development of vacant lots. By bringing alternative agriculture practices and entomophagy into a given community’s collective consciousness, Cricket Shelter contributes to the education and empowerment of the public with regard to their role in sustainable production and consumption. Its creator, Mitchell Joachim, is acknowledged as an innovator in socio-ecological design, architecture, and urban design. He is also a prominent researcher on resilient cities, and a dedicated architectural educator.

The shelter and farm will be exhibited at the entrance of Faena Hotel Miami Beach, Monday through Saturday of Miami Art Week. For more information, visit www.faena.com or www.faenaart.org

Following its commitment to bring new and exciting experiences to Miami, Faena will collaborate with a number of artists to create a series of immersive and site-specific interventions, curated by Ximena Caminos (Chair and Artistic Director of Faena Art). These interventions will be free and open to the public, keeping with the mission to serve the community and create spaces for social interaction.

PHILLIP K. SMITH III

120 DEGREE ARC EAST-SOUTHEAST (2017) Unifying a large swath of Faena Beach is artist Phillip K Smith III’s 120 Degree Arc East-Southeast, a new iteration of the work he created earlier this year at Desert X in the Coachella Valley. What was once a sacred circle in the desert of California is here converted into an arc that seems to hold the sea, a mirrored cove that opens up towards the Caribbean. The work creates a reflective space within the beach environment—the mirrored steel structural elements disappear and meld into the pure elements of water and sky. The artwork directly engages with the ocean surrounding and the endless heavens above. As the light shifts over the course of the day and the viewer moves through the installation, land, water and sky are separated, merged, and displaced, sub-

verting one’s assumed relationship with the horizon and natural boundaries. It is a constantly morphing installation that can never be seen the same way twice. Born and raised in the Coachella Valley, Smith III rose to international acclaim in late 2013 after his Joshua Tree light installation, Lucid Stead, dazzled viewers across the world. Mirrors on a homestead shack reflected the desert landscape by day and radiated his now patented color-sequencing program by night. "I’m interested in an idea of universal beauty," Smith III says. "Of something that, like the sunset or the clouds, forces all of us as human beings to stop, no matter what our background is, no matter where we are—that experience of being on the edge of the Grand Canyon or seeing that ray of light coming through

the clouds... I think that the art world is a bit leery of the word ‘beauty’ because, how can beauty be universal? It’s so much in the eye of the beholder. But I would argue that it’s not. I think there’s actually something that can be tapped into, that rises above all of that, that is a universal sense of beauty and sense of awe that makes us all want to stop and look." 120 Degree Arc East-Southeast by Phillip K. Smith III will be on display 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday of Miami Art Week on Faena Beach between 32nd and 36th Streets. For more information, visit www.faena.com or www.faenaart.org DEC

Phillip K. Smith III received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, after growing up in Southern California’s Coachella Valley. From his Palm Desert studio, he creates light-based work that draws upon ideas of space, form, light, environment, and change. Featured in hundreds of online and print publications, he is known for creating large-scaled temporary installations such as Lucid Stead, Reflection Field and Portals at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, ¼ Mile Arc in Laguna Beach, and The Circle of Land and Sky at this year’s inaugural Desert X exhibition. All of these installations are featured in his recently released catalog titled “Five Installations” published by Grand Central Press. His public artworks are sited in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kansas City, Nashville, Oklahoma City and beyond; and the artist was recently commissioned to create permanent, light-based works for the cities of West Hollywood, California and Bellevue, Washington.

THE SINKING OF THE TAJ MAHAL (2017)

For months, artist Peter Tunney has been carefully collecting giant pieces of the infamous Taj Mahal casino from Altantic City to convert these ruins into The Sinking of the Taj Mahal, a sitespecific installation at Faena Beach. The artist’s access to the demolition of the casino led to an obsession with the monumental pieces from the façade and rooftop of the building, which created the illusion of the self-titled, “8th wonder of the world,” the Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino. Giant chandeliers, a two-ton ornate concrete elephant and towering letters will all emerge out of the sand. Tunney’s installation of metal, glass, gold, concrete and steel finds extreme beauty in ruins. Peter Tunney’s work probes our culture by mining images from newspapers, magazines, and art books and reinterpreting them through his own unique perspective. His recent works, in which refreshingly optimistic phrases and quotes are colorfully painted over collaged headlines, serve as a subtle attack on our culture of fear and ennui. As our media sources relay stories of death, destruction, hysteria and greed, Peter whimsically overpowers them with his own headlines, such as “Don’t Panic,” “Believe,” “Gratitude” and “Change the way you see everything.” After having a career on Wall Street, Tunney turned to art and opened his first gallery in New York in 1991. In 2010, he became the first tenant of the iconic Wynwood Walls when he opened the Peter Tunney Experience gallery.

The Sinking of the Taj Mahal by Peter Tunney will be on display 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday of Miami Art Week on Faena Beach between 32nd and 36th Streets. For more information, visit www.faena.com or www.faenaart.org DEC

Urban Architectural Intervention Expanding upon its commitment to offer free, public programming to the city of Miami and support artists worldwide, Faena has commissioned Kelly Breez, the science/ art collective Coral Morphologic, and Argentine artist Martin Borini to transform the OMAdesigned façade of the Faena Forum with digital video and animations. EDIACARAN MIND (2017) The 3D-mapped projections that composes Ediacaran Mind are invitations for the community to experience contemporary art in the public sphere as an urban architectural intervention. Working mostly monochromatically, Kelly Breez weaves a sharp eye for subtle humor into her work, acting like a mirror to the absurdities of life. Breez has an eye for details: she notices everything. She’s a sponge for the nuance of the unpredictable tropical wasteland she calls home. Her existential cartoonish drawings and scrawled lettering pose ques-

tions that are both profound and comical. Coral Morphologic’s video work celebrates the synchronicity behind the sexual reproduction of corals, proposing that unlocking the secrets of coral reproduction is a culminating achievement in humankind’s quest for the colonization of planet Earth and a first step towards restoring a healthy biosphere. Coral Morphologic’s work is firmly rooted in the present time and place of Miami: a city built primarily from limestone recycled from thousands of years of local reef-building, bordered by two national parks, and home to a diverse cultural community that mirrors its colorful aquatic ecosystems. Their beautiful and luminescent patterns of phosphorescent corals evoke the beautiful geometry and colors of the naturally occurring forms in our environment. Martin Borini’s work approximates white noise and intervenes the façade as if there was a glitch in the system. The images are generat-

ed from small variations in a force feedback of a closed system, creating superimposing and unique images using the generative loop as content origin. His work consists of live visual performances and stage design, both under a clear state of art thinking development using original visual techniques combined in an overall process with art direction and technology. Ediacaran Mind, 3D-mapped projections by Martin Borini, Kelly Breez, and Coral Morphologic, will rotate hourly and be visible nightly from Monday to Saturday of Miami Art Week. Schedules may be updated due to inclement weather. Stay up to date on all Miami Art Week events with the Faena Art App, or visit www.faenaart.org. DEC

CORAL MORPHOLOGIC

KELLY BREEZ

MARTIN BORINI

Coral Morphologic is a hybrid art-science endeavor comprised of marine biologist Colin Foord and musician Jared McKay. They operate the world’s only multimedia coral aquaculture studio in a laboratory along the Miami River. Coral Morphologic’s work is firmly rooted in the present time and place of Miami: a city built primarily from limestone recycled from thousands of years of local reef-building, bordered by two national parks, and home to a diverse cultural community that mirrors its colorful aquatic ecosystems.

Kelly Breez is a multidisciplinary artist and tropical person who lives and works in Miami. After graduating with a BFA from New World School of the Arts, she bought a van with friends and moved everything to San Francisco. She spent seven years there generating an arsenal of illustrations, working on sets, and designing album covers. She then found herself back in South Florida, overseeing a full restoration of her father’s 38-ft. sailboat. Working mostly monochromatically, she weaves a sharp eye for subtle humor into her work, acting like a mirror to the absurdities of life.

Martin Borini’s works, under the pseudonym Ailaviu, consists of live visual performances and stage design. He developed his activities mainly in Argentina, although he visits other countries in South America as well. Over the last few years, following his work at the Fuerza Bruta company in Buenos Aires, he began to expand his network and services to Europe and USA. He has developed multiple visual sets and techniques for realtime video screening at Sonar, Mutek, Moonpark, Time Warp, and Ultra Music, among other festivals. He is also a member of the IDV Group, with whom he has carried out several projects.

Dutch duo Studio Drift, in partnership with BMW and Pace Gallery, will premiere Franchise Freedom, a performative artwork at the interface among technology, science, and art on the beach of Faena District. An autonomous flying swarm of 300 drones, Franchise Freedom, supported by Faena Art, exposes the tension between individual freedom and safety by numbers. The sacrifice made by the individual subjecting to the group gives the illusion of freedom, creating a never-ending cycle. Inspired by the starlings that take over the skies of Rome towards the end of autumn, Franchise Freedom mimics the birds’ behavior, roosting together in massive flocks and flying through the sky in large swarms to create breathtaking aerial displays through a seemingly rehearsed but natural cohesion of movement and light. This performative piece marks the first time that a natural phenomenon will be imitated by machines working with decentralized algorithms at this scale.

Certain types of flowers close at night, for self-defense and to conserve their resources. This highly evolved natural mechanism is called ‘nyctinasty’ and inspired Studio Drift to create Shylight for Faena Beach Dome; nine sculptures that unfolds and retreats in a fascinating choreography, mirroring that of real flowers.

That Your Heart Be Wide As a River A Buddhist Vision of Love Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh shares his generous and compassionate vision of love, which must begin with care and respect for oneself. Love in the West is a combination of elements from multiple sources. Rather than feel love, we often think of love as a form of private property and as a social contract that governs our relationships with the other, or as a mere construction of Hollywood to further propagate male and female insecurities. An Eastern vision of love can complement our closed and utilitarian visions of romantic relationships. Vietnamese Zen monk, teacher and activist, Thich Nhat Hanh, has urged us, through his speeches and writings, not to be carried away by contemporary cynicism but rather build a loving practice based on the care and appreciation of oneself, what he’s called “building a house within oneself.” In accordance with Buddhist principle, the central idea of love promoted by Thich Nhat Hanh emphasizes mutual understanding as a source of compassion. A body of water serves as the perfect metaphor for love, according to the master’s vision: If you pour a handful of salt into a cup of water, the water becomes undrinkable. But if you pour the salt into a river, people can continue to draw the water to cook, wash, and drink. The river is immense, and it has the capacity to receive, embrace, and transform. When our hearts are small, our understanding and compassion are limited, and we suffer. We cannot accept or tolerate others and their shortcomings, and we demand that they change. But when our hearts expand, these same things do not cause us suffering anymore. Rather, we gain understanding and compassion and can embrace others. We accept others as they are, and then they have a chance to transform. Love is also the result of generational patterns, and it is historically acquired: If our parents didn’t love and understand each other, how are we to know what love looks like? The most precious inheritance that parents can give their children is their own happiness. Our

parents may be able to leave us money, houses, and land, but they may not be happy people. If we have happy parents, we have received the richest inheritance of all. As for the loving couple, the most important lesson is to understand the mutual interpenetration of both the care and the mutual suffering. Learn to lose limits not only in the hedonistic sense, in the sexual and pleasurable senses, but also as part of a shared responsibility for ourselves and for others: In a deep relationship, there’s no longer a boundary between you and the other person. You are her and she is you. Your suffering is her suffering. Your understanding of your own suffering helps your loved one to suffer less. Suffering and happiness are no longer individual matters. What happens to your loved one happens to you. What happens to you happens to your loved one. The essence of love, for Thich Nhat Hanh then, is thus: the essence of loving kindness is being able to offer happiness. You can be the sunshine for another person. You can’t offer happiness until you have it for yourself. So build a home inside by accepting yourself and learning to love and heal yourself. Learn how to practice mindfulness in such a way that you can create moments of happiness and joy for your own nourishment. Then you have something to offer the other person. The saying popularized by Jacques Lacan in the West may sound cynical at first: “Love is giving something you don’t have to someone who doesn’t want it.” But the Lacanian saying is, in a sense, not opposed to the simplicity of the Buddhist teaching of Thich Nhat Hanh, because what produces love for all beings, indiscriminately, starts with oneself and will continue irrespective of how it is at first received.

PREVENTION BEFORE CORRECTION

THE POWER OF ASHTANGA YOGA. MY TEACHER HAS A TEACHER

BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR With these autumn tips, you can take a step to keep your skin looking young, no matter what kind you inherited! I am lucky enough to be the aunt of two amazing boys, a 5-year-old and a 1-yearold. I mention this as they are prime examples of what young, healthy skin looks like. Their skin is clear, free of sun spots, freckles or other imperfections. Their skin is smooth to the touch, soft and has excellent elasticity. Not infrequently I catch myself staring at their juvenile skin, in awe of its radiance and suppleness. I feel an extra sense of urgency to keep their skin healthy, not just because I am a dermatologist, but because I am their aunt, and I care about their health. Fundamentally, this is why I believe prevention is so important. Following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and practicing stress reduction helps to prevent or minimize our risk for diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help avoid dehydration leading to a headache and lack of energy. And following a good skin regimen and eating a diet high in antioxidants can help prevent skin cancers and slow down the aging process. These are just a few examples of how the theory of prevention plays a role in our daily lives. So what are some things I can teach my nephews and you about minimizing extrinsic aging of your skin? Here are some basics: –Most skin changes associated with aging are avoidable and have a common link: the sun. Therefore, it is important to wear a broad-spectrum sunblock with physical blockers such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. This should be applied liberally and reapplied every two hours at minimum. Further, SPF clothing and hats offer additional protection. –Maintaining a healthy diet high in antioxidants such as Vitamin C, E and A are particularly important for healthy skin. Tomatoes, carrots, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables are a good place to start. –For the adults - avoid excessive alcohol consumption and avoid smoking. Decreased blood flow to the face and damage from toxic chemicals in smoke, are the likely causes of premature aging.

During the workshop, Lopez performs energy work to create an open and connected environment. Under his intuitive direction, participants are called on to fill in as representatives of past and present family members while each individual explores the origins of their suffering until reconciliation and emotional release can be sensed not only by the person sharing his or her issue, but by the entire group. “The way participants felt about the trauma eventually disappears or transforms into something that is not a burden but an understanding,” he says. While my first traditional Ashtanga practice was on June 2nd 2014, my teachers, Tim Feldmann and Kino MacGregor, both began around the turn of the last century. The three of us, and thousands of others, currently call Sharath Jois our teacher. And he grew up at the feet of the father of our lineage, Sri K Pattabhi Jois. I pass on this deep knowledge to my students. When we set foot on our yoga mat, we become the latest branch in an age-old family tree. The power of Ashtanga yoga lies in the connection to lineage and a traditional yogic practice passed, with care, from teacher to student through hundreds, if not thousands of years. For such a long time now, we have all begun our practice the same way. We simply raise our arms above our head with a deep and mindful breath in. Even this first movement of a Sun salutation is taught with detailed attention. We learn the sanskrit number for one, Ekam, so that we can count the movements. We experience that inhales always lift the body up and into the practice. The time-tested method continues from here, taking sometimes simple and sometimes complex postures, while linking breath and movement. The physicality is just a window to something deeper though. We come to understand that we are not journeying alone, with our questions of identity and soul‘s purpose. We have become travelers on a path shared by countless seekers. As our internal yoga gets fired up by dedication, we draw life force from what came before. Our connection to the source makes us confident in our practice and we touch a timelessness. Sometimes I feel as if every yogi, through all the eons, is reaching her arms up in unison. Ekam, Inhale!

Classes at Tierra Santa Studio: Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Drop ins welcome. For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570.

FAENA JOURNAL

Faena Rose Faena Rose is our art- and culture-based private members club, which brings together a dynamic community of like-minded individuals through a robust, year-round calendar of the most engaging and transformative cultural experiences. Four-time James Beard Foundation award-winner Chef Michael Solomonov, known for his skill at transforming simple foods into artful culinary masterpieces, recently joined Faena Rose members to take them on an epicurean journey with a family-style feast inspired by historical interpretations of modern Israeli cuisine. Hosted at the home of Rose member Robert Zarco, this special dinner created by Chef Solomonov exclusively for Rose members showcased the melting pot of Israeli cooking with a menu that brilliantly highlighted the 200 subcultures and cuisines of Israel. The culinary fare included Solomonov's wonderfully rich hummus with homemade pita; an assortment of salatim and mezze, including beets with tehina and cobia crudo with pomegranate tabbouleh; and decadent main dishes such as duck & foie kebabs with pumpkin, apple, and pine nuts and lamb shishlik with baba ganoush, purple cabbage, and leeks. Over dessert, Chef Solomonov discussed the inherent uniqueness of Israeli food in a conversation moderated by Rose Founding Member and SOBEWFF® & NYCWFF® founder Lee Brian Schrager.

Daydreaming Perched atop the one-of-a-kind Faena Hotel Miami Beach, with jaw-dropping views of both ocean and city skyline, the Penthouse Residences offer discerning buyers the chance to live their dreams—literally.
