Miami Art Week 2017 in Review
Franchise Freedom by Studio Drift in partnership with BMW.
A celebration of jaw-dropping, site-specific installations and show-stopping performances was unveiled in the Faena District for Miami Art Week this past December, including the largest public art installation in the city of Miami Beach.
An incubator of ingenuity, design and groundbreaking architecture, Faena Miami Beach serves as an anchor for the city’s creative scene. And this year’s Miami Art Week proved that it’s not the sky, but the stratosphere that’s the limit for the Faena District, with immersive, site-sensitive commissions by international artists affirming Faena as a cultural epicenter accessible to all. Drones swarmed the air, offering a powerful meditation on technology and travel—as well as individuality and group think — thanks to the creative genius of Studio Drift in partnership with BMW. The duo effortlessly merged science, art and elegant machinery to bring a swarm of 300 awe-inspiring machines zooming above Faena’s pristine beachfront and the ocean beyond. On the ground at the nexus of land and sea,
Phillip K. Smith III presented 120 Degree Arc East-Southeast, a new iteration of a work first debuted at Desert X in the Coachella Valley— a graceful, elemental arc of 300 individual mirrors curving toward the sea, seemingly holding and releasing water while simultaneously straining toward the sky. Miami-based artist Kelly Breez, the science/ art collective Coral Morphologic, and Argentine artist Martin Borini intervened the façade of the Faena Forum with Ediacaran Mind, a curated series of digital video and animations projected onto the OMA-designed building's circular exterior. These 3D-mapped projections were invitations for the public to experience contemporary art in the public sphere as an urban architectural intervention. On Faena Beach, Peter Tunney’s oceanfront installation, The Sinking of Taj Mahal, pro-
voked our perceptions of beauty among ruins with relics from the infamous Taj Mahal casino of Atlantic City. The Faena Beach Dome and its oceanfront deck featured live DJ performances from an impressive lineup of artists, including Mia Moretti, DJ Henri and Paperwater, as guests enjoyed immersive artistic projections and innovative craft cocktails. Meanwhile, the entrance of Faena Hotel Miami Beach was intervened with Cricket Shelter, a revolutionary environmental and resource performance of urban farming from multi-disciplinary artist Mitchell Joachim. At Faena Forum, two monumental site-specific installations joined together as DeXtinction to convert the OMA-designed space into a modern-day Garden of Eden, where dinosaurs roam, crystals glow, and a disco inferno of ashes and volcanic lava swirls.

SECOND SUNDAYS As part of its mission to maintain culture at the heart of Faena District, Faena will host Second Sundays on January 14 at Faena Forum.
Faena Miami Beach will present the fifth installment of Second Sundays with ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces, an immersive, participatory and sitespecific art installation created by contemporary artist duo assume vivid astro focus (avaf) that reimagines the traditional roller dancing rink as part of its mission to curate community-based cultural programming. For January’s installment, Second Sundays welcomes a series of new performers, live music acts, and a roller dancing class for beginners. Among the many performances lined up for this event are Miami Quad Squad, TM Sisters, DJ Paperwater, and many more. Food pop-ups will also offer guests an array of delectable bites.
The public installations, curated by Faena Art, were all immersive and open to guests of all ages, furthering Faena’s mission of serving the city of Miami Beach and promoting spaces for experimentation, social interaction and community growth. “We have redefined the way we live in cities by building a strong community anchored in art and culture,” said Alan Faena. “The Faena District is envisioned as a space for a multiplicity of voices and artistic practices. For the latest edition of Miami Art Week, we were proud to present artists working on a range of media in our public space.” And because Faena understands that unbridled creativity requires inner peace, the Tierra Santa Healing House at Faena Hotel Miami Beach unveiled a number of stress-reducing experiences for Art Week including Twin Hearts Meditations led by Spa Director
Agustina Caminos, Ashtanga yoga sessions with the renowned Miami Life Center and an opportunity to tap into healing vibration therapy with an intimate sound bowl & crystal rituals. At Faena Theater, guests enjoyed an exclusive Miami Art Week performance of Sensatia, an interactive Cirque-style Cabaret fusing state-of-the-art technology, live music and incredible acrobats, as well as dazzling acts by performance artists from New York City’s infamous late-night entertainment destination, THE BOX, both presented by Perrier-Jouët. Finally, the iconic Duran Duran closed out Miami Art Week with an exhilarating, intimate performance of their greatest hits to an enthusiastic crowd, presented by Sirius XM. The Lust of Experiencing Reality: Knowing Dralas The principle of Drala appeals to the elemental presence of the world, available through different perceptions. There are moments in our lives when the most insignificant things remind us of reality’s extravagant nature. We can walk and feel a gust of wind, for example, as it goes through the leaves of a tree; in that magical moment— the product of the simplest event—we remain enchanted (as if under a spell). We understand it as if it were something that lies in the tree, the wind and ourselves, everything at the same time. These simple and witch-like events are known as Dralas within the Tibetan tradition of Shambhala. Dralas name something that is so impalpable that perhaps we would never have considered they have a term (like everything that lacking a name is destined to remain in the world of dreams). It was Chögyam Trungpa Rimpoche, who in Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, recovered the principle of Dralas, which precede the introduction of Tibetan Buddhism as part of the country’s indigenous traditions, and put them at the service of the entire world as a magical realm; that which you name is. Thanks to Trungpa, then, we can include Dralas in our metaphysical phenomena archive and pay them the attention they deserve. When water reminds us of water, Trungpa says, the fire of fire or the earth of earth, and we feel something like a universal gust, we become acquainted with Dralas of reality: “Dralas are elements of reality-water of water, fire of fire, earth of earth. Anything that connects you with the elemental quality of reality, anything that reminds you or the depth of perception. Dralas [are] in the rocks… trees… mountains… a snowflake or a clod of dirt. Whatever is there… those are the Dralas of reality. When you make that connection… you are meeting the Dralas on the spot.” In other words, Drala is the unveiling of the world which is at our disposal through the percep-
tion of the things that comprise it. When we feel the trees, rivers, cracks, clouds, as they are, we are finding a wisdom that is not separated from our own. It is an intimate connection with reality; it reconciles us with everything, in a sudden moment. Perhaps to understand them better we can think of them as if they were ghosts that peek out from behind things we do pay attention to. They are brilliant specters and the elegance of the world of phenomena, which they require from us, is a type of silence or opening to make themselves visible. They are in each one of the elements of nature (where perhaps it is easier to find them), but they are also in a chair, a rock, a face. “The vastness of perception can be captured in simplicity, a single perception, on the spot. When we allow vastness to enter our perception, then it becomes Drala.” Simply by remembering that we have felt them is enough to know that they exist, but naming them grants them the ability to transcend time. And like the entire catalogue of ghosts, we can also summon Dralas. This is how our tangible world becomes populated —and sometimes overpopulated— by people and other feeling creatures, their intangible or invisible counterpart is inhabited by all sorts of beings, or characteristics of the being, and some of these are Dralas. Contemplating a river is more than merely looking at it; we are potentially getting to know the dralas. And “To make a stone stonier, that is the purpose of art,” Trungpa says. The principle of Drala is not only applicable to the practitioners of Buddhism, but to all. Viktor Shklovski once stated that the principle of art is to make stone more “stoney,” summoning Drala. Re-enchanting the world.

BLUE FULL MOON MEDITATION
TIME TO TIGHTEN!
With enough force to propel the ocean, the moon is a mammoth power.
BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR
The Ancient Power of Sacred Mantras
The New Year is here. What does this mean for many of us? A time for reflection and focusing on resolutions for 2018. I feel it is only appropriate to share one of my resolutions. As I have always been a big believer in prevention before correction, it is time for me to step it up and jump on board with ThermiRF. We know that an effective at-home anti-aging regimen is just as important, if not more important, than in-office treatments, but there are two treatments I feel very passionate about to help keep my skin healthy, smooth, tight and lifted. One is growth factor facials (often referred to as "vampire facials" or "modified plasma facials"), which I have written about in a past column. The second is my favorite tissue tightening device, ThermiRF. It is a unique, temperature-controlled radiofrequency technology that is designed to safely induce collagen production which not only helps to tighten and lift the skin, but also make the skin healthier from the inside out. This procedure is effective for both facial and non-facial skin. I have seen fabulous results with endless happy patients, so now it is my turn.
Here is to prevention. Maintaining and enhancing your beauty, celebrating it not changing it!

Pranic Healing Energy is our life force. Every atom in the universe relies on it, and every aspect of our physical, mental and spiritual selves is controlled by it. This January, make a New Year’s resolution to truly pamper yourself with Pranic Healing, an ancient system of energy medicine used to harmonize, balance and transform the body to restore both inner and outer health. Pranic Healing is a system of energy medicine that seeks to accelerate the body’s natural healing process by removing obstructed energy in the chakras, which accumulates from negative thoughts and emotions and leads to poor physical health. At Tierra Santa Healing House, Faena’s Spa Director Agustina Caminos has introduced a series of Pranic Healing treatments and workshops that harmonize, balance and transform the body’s energy processes to restore physical, mental and emotional health. She’s also invited gifted Pranic healers like Master Glenn and Master Marilag to host workshops and retreats. The Pranic Healing ritual has three phases. First, the chakras of the body are thoroughly cleansed and balanced. The body is further purified with the gentle uplifting aroma of Palo Santo smoke, a sacred tree from the east coast of South America known for its mystical healing properties. To finish the treatment, sound bowls are used to quiet the mind through vibrational sound harmonics that synchronize
brainwave frequencies, leading to a greater level of clarity and inner peace. On January 27th-28th, discover the powerful tools of Pranic Healing with an expert-led Introductory Course. Guided by Agustina Caminos, this two-day event will teach the basics of Pranic Healing and the intricate anatomy of energy fields to accelerate healing, improve interpersonal relationships and maintain a positive state of mental wellbeing. Upon conclusion, guests will leave with a formal certificate of completion from the Institute of Inner Studies of Philippines (IISP) and a greater sense of inner-illumination. It is said that in choosing to chant mantras, you are changing your vibration and evoking a higher level of consciousness. Argentine musician Ignacio Escribano will take center stage at Faena Theater on January 6 to deliver an intimate acoustic show featuring select songs from his five albums released with musical group Indra Mantras, including his most recent track, Everything is Love, produced by American guitarist Jimmy Rip. Using a melodic combination of his enchanting voice, guitars, ukulele, samplers and loops, Escribano’s music takes audiences on a journey from the mind to the heart. Skillfully weaving together ancient Sanskrit mantras with a range of influences from The Beatles and Pink Floyd to Latin rhythms and world music, his unique artistic style is heralded for its ability to instill peace, joy, energy and love. On January 7, raise your vibration with a Mantras and Mediation Workshop led by Escribano. The dynamic three-hour session allows guests to experience the benefits of mantras with a respected musician who has played with distinguished artists around the world. His individual style fuses Sanskrit mantras with Western music, featuring singular combinations like the traditional Gayatri mantra with While My Guitar Gently Weeps from The Beatles and Hari Sundar with Bob Marley’s One Love. His performances and workshops are celebrated for their power to uplift the hearts and minds of listeners. All guests are welcome, and no prior experience with mantras is necessary. For more information and reservations, please email spamiami@faena.com or call 786 655 5570.
When the moon is full, the planets are uniquely aligned to offer this power at full force. With the first full moon of the New Year comes a wellspring of energy and opportunity for those willing to explore it. Open your heart and crown chakras with a Full Moon Twin Hearts Mediation, in which certified leadr Eric Lopez will offer breathing and mindfulness techniques to release what no longer serves you, tap into greater happiness and healing, and open your mind and body to your most pure potential.

Making life at Faena even sweeter, residents can enjoy Faena’s peerless amenities, including a 24-hour concierge, move-in assistance, delivery service, a Faena Rose membership, and special pricing throughout the Faena District and at other Faena properties.
