In 1958, Forbes Magazine decided to launch a rating system that would independently rate the best in luxury hospitality from around the world. Back then it was known as the Mobil Travel Guide, and since, they have held the highest standards to select the properties that make it into this list.
Every year, Forbes deploys a team of over 500 anonymous professional inspectors with a list of 800 objective standards to scour the globe reviewing hotels, restaurants, and spas, making sure that only the best properties in the world earn the coveted Five Star recognition. We are very proud to achieve this award in our first year of operation,
a prize that’s given out to “outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.” We will continue to strive to deliver our unique style service, from the moment our guests are greeted at the front door and until they leave our district.

Best of the Harvest: Our Faena Wines
CHEF COLLECTIVE WITH GIORGIO RAPICAVOLI
For a New Yorker, the only thing sweeter than escaping the winter chill for a sun-filled jaunt in Miami Beach is having your hotel fetch you by private helicopter (complimentary, of course) and drop you off at the airport just in time for your flight.
On March 21, Chef Paul Qui will welcome Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli, beloved for his fun and funky twists on comfort food, to this month’s Chef Collective at Faena. Rapicavoli has a rap sheet that will impress most: he’s the owner of Eating House, a popular and critically-acclaimed restaurant in Coral Gables, a two-time winner of Chopped TV show, listed in Forbes’ “30 Under 30” for food, a James Beard Rising Star semifinalist and was voted Miami’s Hottest Chef by Eater. Sure to bring his creative verve and uncanny ability improvise, there’s one thing diners can expect from Rapicavoli; the deliciously unexpected.
If you’ve visited our properties in Buenos Aires and Miami, there’s a chance you came across our Cavas —exuberant wine caves and an intimate setting for wine aficionados to enjoy some of the best bottles in the world, including our signature Faena Wines. With over 4,000 premium bottles combined, we boast one of the best collections in the world. And best of all, you can pair them with food from our restaurants, with tailor-made menus designed by our award-winning in-house chefs, including Francis Mallmann and Paul Qui. A personal passion of Alan Faena, wines were embedded in our genes since day one; they are a source of Argentinean pride and represent our values. So much so, we decided to launch our vino in collaboration with oenologist Marcelo Pelleritti, a disciple of French winemaker Michel Rolland. In 2006, we conducted the initial vendange, carefully supervised by Pelleritti, the first
Argentine to obtain the 100-point recognition in Robert Parker’s strict wine ratings. Once bottled, we commissioned Louise Fili (a member of the Art Directors Hall of Fame) to design the labels. The result is a series of exquisite wines, including a Malbec, a Premium Malbec, a Torrontés –signature wines from Argentina– a Pinot Noir, a Red Blend, a Rosé, and a Chardonnay. All our wines are available at Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann, Pao by Paul Qui and La Cava. In house guests may contact the concierge at 4037 to reserve a bottle.

Here are some basic tips to get your skin healthy and glowing for the sunny season. SUNDAY ASADO True to Argentine tradition, Faena Miami Beach hosts a weekly Sunday Asado (barbecue) for families and friends to spend quality time while feasting on a bevy of delicious wood-fired dishes. Los Fuegos’ famous grilling guru, Francis Mallmann, designed a four-course spread for the occasion. Starting at noon, guests can sip chilled mimosas and Bloody Marys while snacking on a plate of freshly-baked empanadas stuffed with hand-cut prime filet mignon, served with a llajua sauce. The second act serving offers a choice among six light options ranging from a refreshing grapefruit salad with avocado to delectable chorizo and morcilla served with chimichurri and criolla sauce. The main course offers a hearty variety of succulent skirt steak, ribeye, Mediterranean branzino and pork—all grilled to perfection and ready to be smothered in aioli—as well as lighter entrees like wild salmon and roasted half chicken. Just as it should be, dessert is served family-style in a satisfying assemblage of sweetness. The menu includes a decadent chocolate nemesis cake, dulce de leche-filled pancakes and a fresh fruit salad with grapefruit and Campari granite.
This winter, when you book one of Faena Hotel Miami Beach’s One Bedroom or Signature Suites, you and a guest will be treated to a Blade helicopter transfer from their Manhattan helipad to JFK International Airport. Upon arrival in Miami, your private butler will be on-hand to unpack your bags while you sip champagne cocktails oceanside in a private beach cabana. Our concierge will take care of your spa, dining and entertainment reservations while you lounge in your suite’s spacious terrace, letting the dusk breeze cool your sun-kissed skin. In the evening, grab a booth at Pao to taste Chef Paul Qui’s creative genius, enjoying dishes that fuse global flavors from his Filipino

TOPICAL ANTIOXIDANTS They are a fabulous way to perk-up and maintain healthy, glowing skin. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C make the skin appear more youthful, and they also protect you against damaging free radicals, which can lead to the appearance of aged skin. DECREASE YOUR INTAKE OF SALT OR SALTY FOODS Excess sodium can lead to under eye puffiness and bloating. By cutting down your intake, you can wake up looking better every morning. EXERCISE When dermatologists talk about “glowing” skin, we refer to the brightness, clarity, and rosiness that reflect good health. As exercising stimulates circulation, your skin will be flushed, rosy, and radiant—but the benefits of exercise don’t end there. It can help with weight loss, strengthen your bones, increase muscle, and relieve anxiety, all of which are reflected in your skin. So why not indulge in our beautiful South Florida weather? Get outside and exercise, but don’t forget your sun protection!
In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa Healing House at 4381 for further information or reservations.

Biennale of Moving Images This spring, Faena Art pushes the boundaries of multimedia art with its upcoming edition of Biennale of Moving Images 2017. Originally created for The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève under the artistic direction of Andrea Bellini, in collaboration with Cecilia Alemani, Caroline Bourgeois and Elvira Dyangani Ose, the Biennale of Moving Images (BIM) is a one of a kind hybrid event bringing together visual artists, film directors and performers. It seeks to investigate new exhibition models and formats by building a show as a choir, merging polyphonic voices to offer a window into contemporaneity. This marks the 15th edition of the Biennale of
Moving Images and the first time that it will be presented in the United States. Comprising a wide array of multimedia installations, films and documentaries usually shown in cinemas, as well as performances, the Biennale of Moving Images is situated somewhere between a cinema festival, a constellation of solo video installations, onenight only performances and a site for research and experimentation. Within this format, artists are invited to push the boundaries of traditional media.
Unlike most biennials, the BIM is unique in its exclusive presentation of new works that have been commissioned and produced for the occasion with no specific curatorial theme to respond to. This “uncurated” biennial brings the focus of the exhibition format back to the artist’s studio and practice. Ultimately, the works included seem to reveal several common themes that might be considered representative of this cultural moment and atmosphere. Figuring prominently in the exhibition are works that address: the transmutation of
Images (this page). Top: Boris Mitic, still from “My Nothing is Bigger Than Yours”, 2016 / Bottom left: Wu Tsang and boychild, “Moved by the Motion”, Outview Film Festival, Athens, 2016 / Bottom right: Sophia Al Maria, still from “The Limerent Object”, 2016
gender, the female figure and politics of gender; the general sense of foreboding, anxiety and apprehension in our current cultural climate worldwide; and questions of displacement, labor and the exploitation of resources. The BIM encompasses a variety of artistic practices including video, sound, dance, performance and installation, broadening the scope of the moving image beyond the digital condition under which we often reductively see the world. Works range from live performances to five-minute films and hour-long documentaries that reflect the current trends in video and performance practices today. Artist Bertille Bak’s three-channel video installation, Usine À Divertissement, focuses on the flourishing and threatening growth of the tourism industry near indigenous populations in Thailand, Morocco and Camargue, which are exposed, or about to be exposed, to tourism. The 20-minute film implicitly criticizes occidental capitalism’s stranglehold on mass tourism, akin to human safaris trampling local communities’ interests and integrity. Salome Lamas captures a dystopian world of haunting beauty in her cinematic triptych video installation, The Burial Of The Dead, a 90-minute video shot in the high-altitude Peruvian town of La Rinconada on the edge of a gold mine. It conveys dimensions of the miners’ monotony and misery without resorting to graph-
ic images. In contrast, Alessio Di Zio’s two highly improvised fantasy short films, Genesee and Sioux Rapids, feature moments of strange magic and glimpses into his own fantasies and dreams. Shot entirely on smartphones, Aria by Emilie Jouvet is a 60-minute contemporary family album about queer parents, identity, motherhood and family constructions told through a series of portraits and faces leaning over her pregnant belly. The exhibition also includes a live hour-long performance from two longtime friends—visual artist John M. Armleder and musician Stephan Eicher—who will collaborate together for the first time on a common performance. Aria, by Loulou Cherinet, is a six-minute spatial montage of moving images constructed in the same room in which it’s installed. The film project is linked to the concept of kinetic energy and the sensation that the direction of time has changed due to the accelerating scale and complexity of memory technologies, digital infrastructures and more-than-human societies. In seeking respond to the city in the context of Miami Beach, Faena Art has produced three new performance works with Miami-based artists that ask them to respond to these themes. These artists are absorbed into the biennial model, becoming part of, and extending the broader international conversation that started in Geneva here in Miami.

This is C’est Rouge! Every weekend from Thursday to Saturday, our Theater comes to life with C’est Rouge!, a cabaret-style performance full of comedy and sensuality. With a cast of international stars, the show has an impressive lineup of acrobats, thespians and artists that entertain the audience with their unique acts. But what are they doing during their free time? We decided to follow them during their rest days, and this is what we found.
Terroir, the Indelible Feeling of a Place The unique and the singular are fundamental ingredients within our possibilities of knowing the world. Among many other effects, globalization has pushed towards the dissolution of borders, both cultural and commercial. Unlike any other moment in history, the current connectivity allows us to relate to a broad span of cultural manifestations from around the world. No matter where we find ourselves, we can listen to radio stations from Brazil or France, read the London newspaper, and even pay virtual visits to museums located thousands of miles from us. And while this socioeconomic process has some beneficial aspects —like opening valuable data that was kept unfairly reserved for a handful—it also entails significant risks, like turning the world into a homogenous territory where the possibility for difference could cease to exist. Thanks to the existence of terroirs —tangible territories defined solely by their singularities and uniqueness— there are good reasons to sense that this threat will not shape humankind’s destiny. This concept —of French origin— is used in cuisine to define the many factors that, by converging in a determined region, assemble a matchless result. The concept of terroir applies mainly to the origin of grapes sowed for the purpose of viticulture, but extends also to cocoa and certain types of wheat, among other products. The so-called
“Designation of Origin” —reserved for items like champagne or tequila, which can only hold the distinction when coming from a specific region — is based on this notion. Although a literal translation is impossible —because it is one of those expressions where centuries and centuries of history and cultural practices converge— a terroir accepts being translated as “the feeling of a place.” As if it were a kaleidoscope, when we catch a glimpse of the concept of terroir we barely discern the cultural, agricultural or geographical whirlwind absorbed by the crops of a grape or a coffee bean. That feeling of a place acts as a powerful synthesis that acquires its full meaning only when it explodes in our appetites. In Derrida’s theory, the différance refers to that which language is unable to symbolize because it overflows with representation. “The sign represents the present in its absence. [...] The sign would hence be, the differed presence,” wrote the Algerian philosopher. And perhaps it is precisely in the impossibility of knowing something through reason —only accessible through sensuality— where the concept of terroir lies: a territory that holds uniqueness as a basic requirement for its own existence.
“There will be no unique name, not even the name of Being. It must be conceived without nostalgia; that is, it must be conceived outside the myth of the purely maternal or paternal language belonging to the lost fatherland of thought. On the contrary, we must affirm it —in the sense that Nietzsche brings affirmation into play— with certain laughter and with a certain dance.” —JACQUES DERRIDA, “DIFFÉRANCE”

IRINA Originally from Russia, this blonde bombshell is one of the most flexible people on earth (and you can confirm this at C’est Rouge!). Since a very young age, Irina started training acrobatics and gymnastics with her mother, eventually working with some of the most prestigious trainers in the country. Although she made it to the Russian Olympic team, show business was always a passion, and led her to move to the United States. She picked Miami because of the quality of life and weather, which is why she loves to work on her tan on the rooftop of our hotel. Look closely; you might see her posing next to the Faena sign on a sunny day.

PAMELA & DAYANIS Spend five minutes watching Pamela and Dayanis together; judging by the chemistry they have on (and off) the stage, you’d swear they’re sisters. Despite their rapport, they’re very different from each other. Since the day Pamela was born in Argentina, dancing is in her blood, and when she met Dayanis—who brings Latin and Caribbean flavor to the table—, they effortlessly clicked. Today, they make a great dancing partnership and watching them perform in C’est Rouge! is both humorous and alluring. When they’re not in the Theater, you may catch them by the swimming pool or the beach, monkeying-around with adult beverages in hand.

RONY When he was only 13 years old, Rony watched a video of Francis Brunn (a famous juggler), and he immediately knew that was what he wanted to do in life. His parents—a circus performer and a ballet dancer—both encouraged him to follow this dream and years later, their advice paid off. Without a doubt, his act during the show is one of the most impressive, with guests holding their breath every time he tries to balance his hat and cane, or add another fruit to his repertoire. Did we say fruit? We meant ball. But yes, you might also bump into him at the Tree of Life preparing himself a glass of orange juice between acts.

JOAN & OSMEL On any given day when guests arrive at Faena, they might be lucky enough to bump into Joan and Osmel, two of our C’est Rouge! dancers, twisting and jiving through the hotel. But to really see them in all their glory, we recommend guests book a table at the Faena Theater and catch them live, under the spotlight, performing their onstage pirouettes.Â

UGGI Hailing all the way from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Uggi was born into a circus family and traveled the world performing with them. She loved playing with the tigers and befriended the clowns and magicians, but ultimately she decided to leave the roaming caravan and settle in Florida. When we met her, we immediately fell in love with her charming attitude and sweet smile, and were rapidly captured by her elasticity and gravitydefying balancing acts. It was no surprise to us when we saw her at the Living Room, enjoying a cup of tea at 5 pm sharp, only like she can.

Highlights included a visit with renowned artist Pedro Reyes at his home, where his artwork filled the space from floor to ceiling; a private tour with celebrated artist Bosco Sodi of his installation at Diego Rivera’s Museo Anahuacalli; and a conversation with artist Gabriel Orozco at his new exhibition at Kurimanzutto, which opened to rave reviews by The New York Times. Rose members were also welcomed inside the homes of preeminent collectors Eugenio López and Ramiro & Gabriela Garza for exclusive tours of their unparalleled collections, and enjoyed private visits to the home of legendary architect Luis Barragán and Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera’s famous Casa Azul. Our cultural excursion wouldn’t have been complete without experiencing Mexico City’s outstanding dining scene with curated epicurean experiences at top restaurants such as the famed Pujol and Contramar, as well as a chef-led visit to Centro Histórico’s biggest food market.
