OUR SUNDAY ASADO

El Secreto One of Miami’s best kept secrets. Tucked behind Faena’s candlelit cava and the red velvet folds of Faena Theater, there is beauty hidden in the shadows. The Art Deco gem is wrapped in slick black marble, gold trim and floor-to-ceiling mirrors carved by the hands of Argentine artist

Amaya Bouquet—a veritable Secret Garden to cradle visitors in a magical realm. Hushed whispers are exchanged over handcrafted libations poured on the luminous gilded bar. To get a peek behind the curtain, guests can soon take part in one of Faena’s invite-only

VIP odysseys for an arresting mix of what Faena does best: exalted sensuality mixed with breathtaking surprise. What you’ll find? We’ll never tell.

In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information.

Exclusive editions include Patron en Lalique tequila, of which only 500 bottles have ever been produced, Avion Extra Anejo Reserve, a tequila aged over 44 months and served in crystal cups, and Casa Dragones Joven Sipping Tequila, a small batch tequila that combines blanco and anejo for a clean, bright finish. These smooth spirits are painstakingly prepared by artisans and crafted to be sipped and savored slowly. The pièce de résistance, however, is Faena’s own Avion Faena Barrel Select Reposado. Hand-selected by Faena Founder Alan Faena and Tequila Avion Founder Ken Austin, this tequila takes high-altitude-grown, single-source agave, which is slow roasted for three days in a brick oven before it is slow filtered and aged for six months to a year in oak barrels to infuse it with flavor. While this unique tequila takes twice the industry standard to age, the deliciously smooth finished product is a fruity and floral spirit with top notes of oak and vanilla, proof positive that good things come to those who wait. Reservations for The Living Room are strongly encouraged. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at +1 786 655 5600 and livingroom@faena.com.

There’s no more relaxing way to cap a wonderful weekend than catching up with members of your inner circle over brunch. This March at Faena, guests can enjoy a brilliant take on brunch with the asado (barbecue) buffet from the mind of Los Fuegos’ world-renowned grill master, Francis Mallmann. Starting at noon on Sundays, our award-winning chefs will roll out an indulgent midday meal for guests with options to please every palette. Begin your brunch with one of Mallmann’s signature small plates like melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu beef empanadas and freshly baked breads. As you peruse the buffet, you’ll have a chance to try some of the Argentine chef’s renowned specialties, including wood-fired and slow-cooked meats and seafood fresh from the waters nearby. Those who favor lighter fare can choose from an assortment of veggie delicacies like fresh, organic salads and roasted vegetables elevated to an art form through a variety of inventive preparations. Of course, no meal is complete without something sweet, so round out your feast with a sampling of decadent desserts that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

DISCO INFERNO Miami Music Week is upon us with a special celebration of Ultra Music Festival’s 20th anniversary. Randy Raine-Reusch “Leaves 2”. 1993

FAENA.COM/ALEPH

Music has specific effects on who we are, physically and spiritually. Many people throughout the world recognize music as the highest form of artistic expression. It’s that art form which has best allowed for the human capacity to both create and inspire. Music moves us. It reassures us and helps us to better express what words cannot. It inspires us and can even give us the very strength to carry on. In but a few words, music accompanies us. Perhaps this is what Nietzsche meant when he wrote that "without music, life would be a mistake." Below are some of the advantages music has contributed to human existence, both from a scientific point of view and a deeply vital and philosophical perspective. A TASTE FOR CLASSICAL MUSIC AND EVOLUTION From an evolutionary standpoint, Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics and Political Science, found that a taste for classical or instrumental music is a sign of people who’ll adapt better to varying and new circumstances. That’s to say, they’re better able to adjust to circumstances which might differ significantly from what was considered as ”normal” in preceeding generations. GOOSEBUMPS Have you ever experienced goosebumps while listening to a song? Undoubtedly, this reaction is a predictable effect of music; but researchers have also found these "chills" are related to a very specific feature of the human brain, present only in some individuals. According to a study by Matthew Sachs at Harvard University, this peculiar effect of music on the body is related to a brain structure which, in certain people, connects the auditory cortex with a greater density to the areas of the brain in which

From the skin to the unconscious; it’s thus that music influences your life emotions are processed. This allows communications to occur more efficiently between these two sets of skills—listening and feeling. THE UNCONSCIOUS EFFECT Music has one specific effect that can be easily tested without need for scientific measurements or devices. Simply remember the last time you felt a lively emotion while listening to a song. Joy, sadness, nostalgia, melancholy, love... The spectrum is as broad as the music itself. And we realize that this happens not only when music triggers an emotion, but also that it does so in such a way that it seems to express with total precision what we feel. We’re often not quite able to put that feeling into words. It’s as if music replaces the need and, in so doing, becomes the ideal vehicle for what we feel. In a sequence from The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, Slavoj Zizek explained that “with music, we cannot ever be sure. In so far as it externalizes our inner passion, music is potentially always a threat”. Music is connected to the interior and to a greater depth than we usually believe. MUSICAL WORMS It happened to all of us: suddenly, out of nowhere, we simply can’t get a song out of our minds. We listen to it again and again, sometimes over many days, until a moment arrives when we can finally be free of it. This phenomenon has an eloquent name: “earworms.” These are, in their own turn, a great enigma for modern neuroscience. To date, it’s not well understand why they come about. It’s been suggested that this behavior may be an expression of the brain’s tendency to form patterns or some product of involuntary memory. In Musicophilia, Oliver Sacks, M.D., compared earworms to

Nearly 2,000 artists from around the world will draw hundreds of thousands of electronic music fans to Miami from March 20th to 25th. A red-hot lineup of DJs and musicians will play close to 400 shows in venues around the city, from Bayfront Park and the famed RC Cola Plant to a myriad of hotels and nightclubs. The Ultra Music Festival, held in Bayfront Park (March 23-25), is celebrating its momentous 20-year mark with headlining artists including 4B, Afrojack, Andrew Rayel, Andy C and Armin Van Buuren, while Above & Beyond will close out their massive Common Ground North American tour on March 22nd at the RC Cola Plant featuring a lineup that also includes Alpha 9, Gabriel & Dresden, Jody Wisternoff, Luttrell, Seven Lions and Spencer Brown.

delusional hallucinations which the brain is capable of generating in people affected by madness. DOES CLASSICAL MUSIC MAKE YOU MORE INTELLIGENT? This is probably one of the more widespread ideas about classical music and several recent scientific studies have contributed data toward it. Beyond the research, we need to consider that the enjoyment of classical music requires that some preconditions be met. When we can concentrate on listening, and when we’re curious to know more about a specific work (its musical structure, the circumstances of its composition, etc.), the experience of listening to classical music is usually more pleasant and more enriching. While this might be achieved with almost any genre, the genius that normally accompanies the creation of classical music means that the effort is undertaken, and rewarded, with correspondingly more generosity. Thus, listening to classical music isn’t easy, but at the same time, its very difficulty is that much more stimulating. Concentration, curiosity, and studiousness: these three qualities will nourish the intelligence of anyone. BUT MUSIC MUST MAKE YOU MORE CREATIVE, RIGHT? Possibly. Though perhaps this is only true of “happy” music. According to research carried out by Simone M. Ritter and Sam Ferguson (at Radboud University, Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and the University of Technology, Sydney, respectively), cheerful music, like Vivaldi’s La primavera, provokes feelings of tranquility and joy in listeners. This, in turn, favors so-called “divergent thinking,” which allows one to solve problems by proposing unexpected and often novel solutions.

Miami Film Festival

FAENA ON MUSIC WEEK During Miami Music Week, Noche de Brujas at Faena Forum takes the form of an ‘anti-concert’ night, a collaborative contemporary ritual for the 21st century that focuses on a line up of artists who utilize music or sound as part of their practices. Each participating artist brings their specific practice to activate the space, generating a new spiritual and creative space for social interactions.

For further details on Faena’s events during Miami Music Week, visit www.faena.com/miami-beach/ entertainment

Keeping with its mission to serve the community through the arts, Faena Miami Beach is a proud sponsor of Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival (MFF), an annual ten-day festival that showcases over one hundred independent American and international films in venues across the city.

This year’s festival is kicking off with the buzzed-about film, Tully, starring Charlize Theron. Written by Diablo Cody (of Juno fame) and directed by Jason Reitman, the edgy comedy has only been screened at Sundance prior to landing in Miami. In a tribute to legendary talents, iconic French actress Isabelle Huppert (who is attending the festival with her latest film, Souvenir) will be presented with MFF’s prestigious Precious Gem–Icon Award in recognition of her prolific cinematic achievements. Carlos Saura, one of Spain’s greatest living directors, will also be honored with the same award. “The Miami Film Festival balances the traditions of the history of cinema with the brash new energy of today’s disruptive modern cultural trends and changes,” said Jaie Laplante, the

festival’s Director of Programming for the past seven years. “Artists and exhibitors alike are experimenting with new ideas, new forms and new methods. It’s an interesting time because cinema feels unstable, unpredictable, and dangerous and exciting.” Laplante also programs the summer cinema cycles at Faena’s 36-seat Moulin Rouge- inspired Screening Room, clad in lush red velvet. “Faena revives a great spirit of stylish socialization, with art as a focal point,” he says. "This is profoundly needed in the modern age where growing digital disconnection threatens to erode and evaporate these essential elements of culture." Live Better Certified spiritual leader Eric Lopez has dedicated his life to helping people overcome unconscious trauma and find peace, and now, he’s sharing his gift for fostering spiritual transformation at Tierra Santa Healing House through monthly Shamanic Family Constellations Workshops. Lopez guides guests through the Bert Hellinger-developed Family Constellations methodology, facilitating a powerful healing ritual through which each participant inches closer to enlightenment by exploring and processing familial trauma going as far as three generations back. “This approach uses elements of psychotherapy, regression, primal scream, psychodrama and ancestral history, combined with music and shamanic rituals to help individuals access their subconscious minds and heal traumatic imprints that have been passed down from their ancestors,” said Lopez. During the workshop, Lopez performs energy work to create an open and connected environment. Under his intuitive direction, participants are called

GET CAMERA READY BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR We all know camera filters can help erase dark circles, give us a more even complexion and minimize our pores in photographs, but even better is achieving a fresh, smooth complexion without the need for Photoshop. Here are some tips to get you camera-ready. First and foremost, up the ante with home skincare. In the daytime, protect not just with a sunblock, but with an antioxidant, such as vitamin C or E. These ingredients help to clear away free radicals in the skin that are produced by excessive sun damage. Those free radicals are like Pac-Man; they break down the skin. In addition, certain antioxidants improve the effect of sunblocks on the skin. Protect during the day and then repair at night. For someone with blotchiness in the skin, I recommend products that help even out the skin tone. For rough skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles and improvement in new collagen formation, I recommend growth factors or retinoic acid derivatives. The bottom line is: protect during the day and repair at night. For dark circles under the eyes, one of my big tricks is taking an oral antihistamine like Claritin before you go to bed. When you get up in the morning, you will find your skin less puffy and rejuvenated. Taking a Claritin or a Zyrtec over-the-counter may even be better than Visine, as many people do not realize their skin complexions may actually reflect allergies. Further, in-office treatments such as microneedling, resurfacing lasers and chemical peels can help minimize the appearance of pores and improve skin radiance.

on to fill in as representatives of past and present family members while each individual explores the origins of their suffering until reconciliation and emotional release can be sensed not only by the person sharing his or her issue, but by the entire group.
