ROGER HIORNS EN EL UMBRAL EXHIBITION OPENS IN BUENOS AIRES Roger Hiorns, 2016 winner of the Faena Prize, opens this May in the Faena District Buenos Aires. En El Umbral is a site-sensitive exhibtion curated by Pablo León de la Barra.

Faena Prize for the Arts The international nonprofit organization, Faena Art, announced Tamar Guimarães and Kasper Akhøj as winners of the 2018 Faena Prize for the Arts. A biennial international juried prize recognizing outstanding creativity and artistic experimentation exploring the infinite links among art, technology and design, this year’s Faena Prize was awarded to the Brazilian and Danish duo Tamar Guimarães and Kasper Akhøj, a Copenhagen-based artistic team known for boundary-defying, intensively inquisitive work.

Sensatia-nal Summer This summer, embark on a journey of sensual discovery with our original Cirque Cabaret at Faena Theater. Strength, control, elegance and ease is what Moldovan-born hand balancer Andrey Moraru brings to Sensatia. He bends his tall and sinuous frame with impeccable precision, leaving jaws agape at his power and grace. “Some acts are about strength, some about dance, others focus on music. Andrey

is a specialist and his act stands on its own,” says violinist Shane Borth, who shares a vignette with him. “The crowd’s eyes are glued to him as he contorts his body into forms that seem surreal.” The scintillating show, recently extended to run through August, will showcase a fresh summer act featuring Andrey and MP Letourneau,

an award-winning contortionist, dancer and newcomer to the Sensatia ensemble. Showcasing their jaw-dropping contortion and strength, the duet will perform a stunning act set to an original violin arrangement inspired by Radiohead—one of the show’s many exciting additions that is not to be missed!

The 2018 edition followed a global call for artists to develop proposals for original projects engaging with time and physical duration, while also interacting with the monumental architecture of Faena Art Center Buenos Aires in a new and significant manner. More than 300 artists from 70 nations submitted proposals for the prestigious $75,000 prize, and a selection jury of leading figures in the international art world, coordinated by Ximena Caminos, Chair and Artistic Director of Faena Art, voted unanimously for Guimarães and Akhøj. Special mention awards were given to Vivian Caccuri (Brazil) and Ishmael Randall Weeks (Peru) who will each receive a $1,000 prize.

Turning traditional concepts of space, matter and perspective on their heads, Guimarães and Akhøj’s vision proposes an immersive micro-musical, one which utilizes the stage as an inclined terrain that alters the experience of both audience and performers in tandem.

"The Faena Prize is integral to our ethos and the foundation of our commitment to the creation of new multidisciplinary culture." —Alan Faena. Guimarães and Akhøj’s practice is interdisciplinary at its core; it’s based on rigorous research and combines elements of theater, music, architecture and politics in a highly participatory manner. It is a post-disciplinary, post-colonial practice. Visit www.faenaart.org for more information.

UNA MAREA CRECIENTE Art meets environmental activism this month at Faena Forum. On May 7 at 8 p.m., five prominent Miami artists and innovators are bringing together their complementary talents in music, dance, poetry, and visual art to create Una Marea Creciente, an ambient, non-narrative opera that addresses the world’s rising sea levels. Time-bound and site-specific, the performance, which is free and open to the public, invites the audience to engage with dancers, performers and

The project, which earned Hiorns the esteemed $75,000 prize in 2016, takes over the Faena Art Center Buenos Aires and an open expanse of land in front of Faena Hotel Buenos Aires. Hiorns appropraites found materials and activates them with the performance of naked bodies as a means of resignifying both the objects, our historical and social narratives and the urban landscape. His work merges sculpture, reclaimed objects from Buenos Aires, and live performance towards an exploration of human potential and the boundaries of time. “We are proud to have commissioned Roger Hiorns to create a site-sensitive exhibition that, while continuing his trajectory and research, also reacts and responds to the urban landscape and our own historical narrative,” said Alan Faena.

recorded media in an echo-chamber of mermaids and sea gods, whale songs and floodwalls and the music of the waves. The collaboration underscores Faena’s mission to support creative minds that challenge existing concepts of art, culture and entertainment. MAY

Una Marea Creciente Faena Forum Starts 8:00 p.m.

Hiorns’ is a London-based artist known for sculptures that tread the white space between dimensions: construction and deconstruction, theological and technological, controlled and easily organic. His work pulses with the anxiety of a globalized world while also speaking gently to the fragility of the human condition.

GRILLING MASTERCLASS There’s delicious chemistry in the kitchen these days at Pao, Paul Qui’s renowned Asian-inspired eatery at the Faena Hotel Miami Beach, as Pao Chef de Cuisine Benjamin Murray and guest chef Diego Oka join forces on a bold menu of innovative, unpredictable flavors. Murray and Oka are the latest duo to team up for Pao’s Chef Collective Series, and their partnership is packing a culinary punch. Murray and Oka share a creative vision that is deeply influenced by their shared Japanese heritage and the country’s precise flavors. Working in tandem with the Pao kitchen as their laboratory, the chefs will wow guests with Japanese-inspired dishes paired with the rich earthiness of Peruvian gastronomy. The result of this alchemy is a special Chef Collective tasting menu, available to Pao diners from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 17, featuring artful dishes, inventive ingredient combinations and bright fusion flavors. The menu is born both of heritage and learned passion. For Oka, who was born and raised in Lima, Peru and serves as the Executive Chef of La Mar by Gastón Acurio, the two pillars of his culinary influence are Peru’s diverse gastronomy and the art of Japanese cuisine. Chef Murray’s interest in the culinary arts began at a young age when his mother introduced him to the flavors of her native Japan. He is also well versed in the techniques and in-

gredients of traditional Cuban and American cuisine, and it’s his globally-inspired approach that has placed him at the forefront of Miami’s budding culinary scene. Get a taste of this partnership while it’s still on the menu. In-house guests may dial the Concierge at 4037 for more information. Reservations can be made at 786 655 5600. MAY

Showing Our Pride Faena District was a proud sponsor of this year’s Miami Beach PRIDE Week. From April 2-8, Faena District was drenched in the vibrant colors of the rainbow flag, marking a festive celebration of freedom and individuality as well as an emotional memorial to the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. Inside Faena Theater, the intimate stage was overtaken with sequins and feathers as its grand velvet curtains rose on the Miss Miami Beach Gay Pride Pageant. Friends and allies gathered to cheer as the LGBTQ community’s newest Queen was selected and crowned with the fierce and fabulous tiara. Over at Faena Forum, PRIDE’s official VIP Gala brought together the best and brightest of Miami society, including guest of honor Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy, to enjoy the serenades of Cuban-born, Miami-raised singing sensation EnVee and trumpeter Lily Carassik. PRIDE week also brought Sensatia, the intoxicating Cirque Cabaret at Faena Theater, to

Patriotic Flavors This month, Argentina will commemorate the May Revolution that led to the country’s independence. When Napoleon took control of Spain in 1808, word arrived to Buenos Aires, which was controlled by the Spanish Viceroyalty. On May 25, 1810, the First Assembly was created, declaring itself the ruler of Buenos Aires until the Spanish king was restored. This act of defiance became the precursor to Argentina´s formally declared independence from Spain on

July 9, 1816. Today, the holiday is feted with asado barbecues and a range of traditional dishes, many of which date back to late 18th century when indigenous traditions were fused with Spanish customs, giving rise to criolla cuisine. Faena Hotel Buenos Aires is celebrating with a week-long patriotic menu in El Mercado from May 21 to 27, featuring characteristic recipes like Empanadas Criollas,

humita and Locro de Chacra (a traditional stew), followed by sweet desserts like quince and fruity pastries. ¡Viva la patria!

new dimensions in the streets of Miami Beach. The stars of the performance offered a live glimpse of their talents from Faena’s signature red booth at the 10th Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade, and Sensatia headliners EnVee, star violinist Shane Borth, and aerialist Megan Stockman electrified the crowd at the PRIDE stage with an original cover of Andra Day’s hit anthem, Rise Up. PRIDE may have concluded for the year, but all year long Faena continues to celebrate its community and all that is authentic and unique.

RAISE AWARENESS AND SAVE LIVES! BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. This month, I focus on the deadliest form of skin cancer – melanoma. Below are some facts worth knowing and tips for early detection!

Sacred Secrets A very special month focused on gratitude at Tierra Santa Healing House.

What is a mother? What is a family? And why is it time to ask? Historically, mothers have held a definitive place both within our own intimate narrative and within our symbolic universe. Here, we witness the passage of a voluptuous, paleolithic Venus and similar historical matrons, deities that manifest a maternal archetype and the figure of the single mother out to conquer the world—and she succeeds. But everything, like the river, changes. Over time, both the figure of the mother, and the concept of the family began to change. Today, it’s more complex, more free, and certainly more inclusive and comprehensive. On the one hand, female autonomy, generally subject to cultural standards and social inertia, is finally emancipating itself and designing its own future. At the same time, the family model has opened up, with the legal recognition of unions, relative possibilities for adoption and, above all, the maturing of the imagination. It’s a necessary rearrangement and, like any psycho-social transformation, it’s not exempt from a certain cultural rending (and all the implicit controversy). Still, the results seem more genuine and just. Seen from the reproductive point of view, the

word family implies the simple union which includes a man, a woman, and their resulting children. In the past, families were an institution which formed as a response not only to biological ties, but to political, economic, and social standards: children inherited noble titles, properties, surnames, and the powerful positions of their parents. But from a social and, above all, an emotional point of view, the family is something much more transcendent. It’s a construction which includes a group of people united in closeness, empathy, collaboration, love and, generally, a common history. Seen in this light, such a model does not necessarily have to be the response of people who are institutionally or genetically related, but to groups of people whose relationship implies much less arbitrary ties. This allows us to rethink a simple question, the answer to which we often take for granted: who is really our family? Within this new scenario, the mother—archetypal and universal symbol of the feminine, fertility, reproduction, protection, sacrifice, compassion and wisdom—has also been able to rethink her role. Women, for centuries subjected to staying at

Rethinking our concepts of family, a mother's role and women's roles in the contemporary world. La familia, Rufino Tamayo (1987) - Gandalf's Gallery Flickr.

home and raising their children, have found ways to develop professional careers in parallel, without necessarily giving up motherhood (or doing so if they wish, yet without having their femininity considered incomplete). Current technology allows a woman to become pregnant without the need of a partner, and even couples unable to conceive children can have them through various means. This evidently reformulates, even from a biological point of view, the role of the mother, the father, and the family. The mother in the contemporary world, with all of the wide possibilities within the contemporary family, maintains the role outlined above, just as exciting, but without the implication that her archetypal and sacred capacity to give life is somehow diluted. Our evolution as a society is sustained on multiple pillars. Undoubtedly these new facets of motherhood and the family are two of the fundamental agents of the process. Let’s celebrate them.

Risk factors for melanoma include: - A history of sunburns and/or heavy sun exposure - Blue or green eyes - Blonde or red hair - Fair complexion - >100 typical nevi - Atypical nevi - Personal or family history of melanoma The mean age of diagnosis is 52, while the most common location in men is the back and the lower leg (followed by trunk) in women. One blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles a person’s chance of developing melanoma later in life. Features for melanoma recognition include the “ A, B, C, D’s”: A (asymmetry), B (irregular borders), C (color variegation), D (Diameter >6 mm or different with respect to change in size, shape, color or different appearance from other nevi), E (evolving over time). Melanoma is surgically curable if caught early but potentially lethal with increased risk when diagnosed and treated late.
