THE RURAL BEACON

Towards a New Vernacular

Project Type: Academic (Level 5_Term 1)

Year: 2018-19

Supervisors: Prof. Dr. S M Najmul Imam

Patrick D’ Rozario

Nesfun Nahar

Duration: 14 weeks

The studio excercise was aimed for a sustainable architectural solution for a real rural workshop in Northern Bangladesh, specializing in manufacturing bamboo bicycles, and handcraft items.

The design masterplan was devised to be developed in different phases, keeping the budget, and construction constrains in mind. The design goal was to achieve a certain flexibility in construction process, which could be obtained using locally available building materials, construction techniques, and expertise of local artisans.

The workshop itself was designed as modular component, so that it could be expanded as per the business need. A learning centre was designed as part of the masterplan. which could function as a day care centre for the woman workers, a community hall for the area, and school classroom.

Rammed earth, bamboo, and cement concrete was used as the primary building materials.

‘The Prize of Water’ was one of the finalists in Designing Resilience in ASIA (DRIA) 2018, and got appreciation for its inter-scalar and interdependent innovations.

Our design aimed to gain resilience with the social and economic prices Bangkok dwellers pay during the flood, to convert them into prizes. The strategic approach emphasized user-driven investments for attaining trans-formative resilience in the economy, ecology, and social systems.

As Bangkok is expanding with rapid urbanization in conflict with nature, our project dealt with the inter-scalar and interdependent systems for addressing the flood and subsidence problems. Our strategic interventions at territorial and city scales add return value on the micro scale. This would reduce the amount of investment required to discuss the problems by creating opportunities to address other multi-dimensional urban issues.

Our value-added interventions stretch from retaining water in the upper catchment to creating mangrove belts at the gulf of Thailand. Implementing this strategy would reduce the extent of the upstream flood in city scale, and shift focus on city and suburb level interventions to mitigate flood.

The revival of the canals and capillaries for organic water management can in terms provide the opportunity to integrate water and land-based mobility. This promotes deconcentration of the city population by strengthening communication between city and suburbs.

The underused Chao Phraya riverfront was re-envisioned as the city’s most anticipated cultural hub. The final outcome would be a more porous and deconcentrated state of Bangkok, reaching economic, environmental, and social resilience.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Designing the Berlin bohemian hostel

Project Type: Competition Entry

Year: 2019

Duration: 3 weeks

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a design studio excercise to ideate a contemporary, out-of-the-box design for a hostel that redefines the idea of co-living. The sculpture park beside the iconic site of Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin was chosen as the site, with an objective to create the design a landmark for the city.

The design approach was taken to create a transient architecture, with the yellow ramp as the primary constant feature. The space addresses the locals and travellers alike, enabling them to create a modified version of their idea of a shared living space. They would be able to engage with other residents on creative and artistic idea sharing, making the place a coveted melting pot for all.

Cutting-edge technology such as 3D printing, robotic construction, recycling waste plastic as building material would be the construction backup for the hostel. Guests would be able to pay with waste plastic components as tariff, which will later be used to regerate further hostel blocks. This will play a vital role in eradicating plastic waste from the environment.

Welcome to Bohemian Rhapsody- an enthusiastic ans ecstatic expression of living!

In the centre of Berlin’s hustle and bustle, this hostel is just what you need to get in touch with your inner bohemian spirit. Forget living inside pegion coops disguised as hotels, Bohemian Rhapsody rejects those obsolete and segregating ideas by becoming an ever-evolving art park, open for all!

How to live here? You choose that. Tell is the idea of you desired temporary den- whether shared or personal, and we will create the environment for you.

The cost of living? Simple, plastic waste! You can come from any part of the world. Collect the plastic garbage, submit them here, and you’re covered. The plastic currency here will be recycled and used to make building materials for this hostel, and other affordable housing projects in different places. That way, you can have an impact on creating a cleaner and greener earth.

See the ramp? That is the only constant structure here, acting as a landmark. And it’s not only open to the hostel guests, but all of Berliners. Don’t forget to enjoy the big pool! Swim in a hot Summer day, sit beside it and read a book in a Fall afternoon, or skate on it in Winter. The art park, for you, will always be transforming. You will have new experiences every time you visit. Sometimes an art gallery, or a movie theatre; or even a concert venue. Interact with the locals here. Exchange values, get inspired, and inspire them with your stories. Who knows, some of them might join you on your next quest as well..!

So, what are you waiting for?

Our aim was to devise an EOC where functions and aesthetics could amalgamate to make a synergistic relationship. As the type and place of the crisis are often unforeseen, we needed a structure that could adopt to diverse contexts and climates of the Sub-Saharan Africa. Considering these conditions, we designed a modular volume of 4m x 4m which could fulfill the highest functional demands as per need.

Selection of materials and construction process with removable panels not only help in quick installation but also give the flexibility to alter any closed space into semi-closed, or open space when required.

When the crisis passes, the modules can be dismantled and all the parts can be stored for future. The commemorate the crisis, and to raise awareness for future, the management section of the EOC is conserved to transform into a community space for the locality. A curvilinear rammed earth wall erected at the previous entrance, symbolizes the bold yet dynamic nature of the space.

A completely flexible and adaptable volume is designed to act as the core cell of the EOC. It can be made of completely locally sourced materials and indigenous building techniques. A total of two roof systems have been used for the cell. The first one is fabric-woven, which covers for the semi-open spaces. The other one is corrugated metal sheets- for closed spaces.

Entering the EOC premises, an open space welcomes the affected people seeking physical and psychological help. Mass counseling and meetings can be held here. Semi-closed spaces covered with white patterned fabrics woven through wooden frames alongside the open space create a lofty ambiance and distinguish the paths which can be adapted to house programs like distributing supplies and primary goods, disease testing and vaccination, charity giveaways, or waiting zones.

Stepping onto the wooden ramp, a shaded walkway takes us to the assistance zone of the EOC. The assistance zone holds workstations for the health workers and volunteers, medical storage, separate section for victim consulting and psychological counseling. A dedicated space to deal with affected women and children was designed with victim support facilities.

Following the assistance zone, the shaded walkway leads us to an intimate breathing space which helps the relentless workers, staff, and volunteers fighting against the crisis to take a breath. The breathing space connects the assistance zone with the management and logistics zone and maintains natural ventilation through spaces.

The ceiling above these three main functions is slightly raised above the fabric woven wooden frame allowing defused light and natural ventilation keeping the entire inside atmosphere comfortable and lofty. The ceiling is tilted towards the breathing space allowing possible rainwater to be collected
