DR. GABRIELA CARRANZA

“We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry & provide a clear path to solving problems.”

DR. JULIAN KAHN

Becoming a dentist isn't easy. It takes years of study, the ability to pass rigorous exams, and a steady hand to match a sharp mind. But for Dr. Gabriela Carranza, becoming a dentist wasn't enough. She would go on to study advanced dentistry for an additional eight years, specializing in prosthodontics and implant surgery. Dr. Carranza's addiction to learning more in order to better serve her patients fueled her to become a Prosthodontist. Since 2015 she has served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Rochester's Eastman Institute for Oral Health. In 2018 she became the owner of Victor Prosthodontics.

If you've never heard of the term 'Prosthodontist' before, not to worry, you aren't alone. The title itself is a mouthful. However in the world of dentistry, Prosthodontists are Doctors of Dental Surgery who play a key role in a patient's oral care. Expert at cosmetic and restorative dentistry, they are often referred challenging cases by general dentists and other dental specialists and closely collaborate with them. Services they provide include crowns, hybrids, dentures, implants, bridges, veneers, TMJ solutions and treatment for sleep apnea.

Q&A WITH THE DOCTORS SO WHAT EXACTLY IS A PROSTHODONTIST? "A Prosthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed at least 3 years of a prosthodontics residency program beyond the initial 4 years of dental school. We are reconstructive dentists who undergo highly specialized training to treat the most challenging cases."

HOW IS A PROSTHODONTIST DIFFERENT FROM A GENERAL DENTIST? DR. GABRIELA CARRANZA & DR. JULIAN KAHN VICTOR PROSTHODONTICS

"We tend to go beyond the standard 'bread and butter' dentistry. "We treat patients who have genetic disorders, trauma or neglect, and instead of focusing on a single tooth we evaluate the whole mouth -- providing solutions to complex problems."

“Can we say everyone? But seriously, in addition to difficult cases it could also be someone who hasn't had a great dental experience in the past and is in need of a second opinion. We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry for our patients and provide a clear path to solving their problems."

The Power of Place

W

e all need a place to call our own. One where we can relax and recharge, be ourselves and enjoy the people and things that matter most to us. Many of us like a place where we can add value and make a difference. Others seek out a place that offers natural and human-made resources that enable fitness, recreation, intellectual stimulation, healthy aging and connection to something greater than ourselves. Perhaps these are reasons why Ontario County is enjoying growth unlike almost any other county in New York. Open spaces, beautiful views and a rich variety of cultural, recreational and educational opportunities combine with kind, welcoming people who love this place and love sharing it with others. If you live in Ontario County you know what we mean. If you’re considering relocation – yourself, your family, your business – or maybe a second residence, we invite you to get to know us better! Stroll our main streets. Taste our bounty. Meet our people and visit ONChamber.com for even more resources and inspiration. Because we all need a place. We’re happy to share ours with you!

he “Ladies of the Livre” book club in Canandaigua, named by its founder Heather Whiting, a Quebecer, includes a dozen or so women. Among them are professional teachers, writers, and musicians. The group includes a retailer, a sailor, a lawyer, a nurse, and a multitasking ATHENA Award nominee, among others. While they are very different from one another, they are all moms who have three things in common: they love books, they love “home,” and they love discussing books together in each other’s homes. The original “ladies,” eight in all, began meeting in 2000 when their children were little. Four of the eight originals are still members today. Over the years, as readers stopped coming or moved away, new ones were added to maintain a roster of at least 12. That’s important. A monthly book club needs 12 books, 12 hostesses, and 12 meeting venues. “Heather pitched the idea when we were sweltering in the pool area of the YMCA, watching our kids learn to swim,” recalls Renee Carbary, a charter member. “She said she was Left top: One of the group’s first post-COVID meetings was held in the library of Adrienne and Kipling Goh’s historic-district home. Among their book collection is a series by Arch Merrill, “the Poet Laureate of Upstate New York.” Left bottom: Renee Carbary tackled special projects at her Main Street Home last year, like refurbishing this garden wheelbarrow. It came from a friend who recalls riding in it at her grandfather’s farm in Pennsylvania. Below: One pandemic-era meeting took place on the porch of a home on Bristol Street. The vintage Westinghouse oven and cart, now orange and used as a bar, was reconditioned during the pandemic by an artist in Honeoye.

thinking of starting a book club and would I be interested. I said ‘Oh yes, please,’ because it seemed that all I was reading was Dr. Seuss and Good Night Moon. “Since then during our meetings, we have shared our secrets and our souls; milestones that have included births, deaths, divorces, children’s graduations and now grandchildren,” she adds. “Our homes are an extension of us, part of our souls.” Their homes run the gamut of residential choices from well-preserved historic to modern custom. One is in a scenic hilltop development, another has a swimming pool and an elevator. Some are in the city and others are in the country. A home near Cheshire is accessed by driving through a cornfield, and at least two readers’ homes have magnificent views of the lake. It doesn’t need to be a house to be a home. Heather recently downsized to an apartment and the group is anxiously awaiting the reveal. (continued on page 66)

The Gohs’ home is filled with family pieces, including this one from Adrienne’s father’s family in Philadelphia. Outside, under the kitchen window is Renee Carbary’s potting shed, a Mother’s Day gift built by her sons.

Exterior Home Preparation • Touch up trim paint on doors, window frames, fascia, etc. • If your lawn shows no signs of life, a little fertilizer and some water will do wonders. Mow and edge the lawn frequently until the home is sold. • Overgrown shrubbery should be cut back to show as much of your home’s exterior as possible. • A low-cost investment in seasonal flowers or ground cover will add a personal touch. • Replace missing shutters, gutters, downspouts and remove any debris. • Inspect the roof for necessary repairs and any visible broken shingles or tiles.

• Cracks in the driveway and sidewalks can be easily repaired with ready-mix cement. For excessive stains, there are easy-to-use cleaning agents at your home repair store.

Interior Home Preparation

• Stucco water stains can be repaired using a mild bleaching agent.

• Put all valuables in a safe place.

• Fences should be mended and painted.

• Repair any cracks or holes in walls and touch up with paint.

• If the street sweeper does not come every week, make sure the area in front of your curb and driveway are clear of debris. Wash it down with the hose.

• Clean your home from top to bottom.

• Doors should be cleaned and touched up as well. Torn screens should be repaired or replaced.

• Wash all windows inside and outside. • All of these suggestions may also apply to your backyard or children’s play area.

• Avoid repainting the entire house unless current colors are loud or offbeat. White or light pastels are the easier for new homeowners to work with.

Catering is easier than ever! Order delicious party trays, desserts, entrées, sides, and more for delivery, carryout or curbside pickup.

ntario County is experiencing an aging boom. Forecasts say that by 2035, 33 percent of the county’s population will be 65 and older – an increase of 11 percent over today’s figures. The number of people 75 and older is projected to double by then, and the population of those 85+ will increase by nearly 90 percent. The figures aren’t unique to our region. According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Baby Boomers across the nation started turning 65 in 2011 at the rate of about 8,000 per day. By 2060, the number of Americans 65 and older is projected to reach 98 million – the first time in our history that older adults outnumber children under age 5. But what is unique about Ontario County is that it’s preparing to meet the needs of its aging demographic with the “Age-Friendly Ontario” initiative,

T

he quality of life of older adults is greatly influenced by the quality of life that surrounds them, and the availability of the services and infrastructure available there. The World Health Organization refers to these influences as the eight domains of “livability.” Here is look at the aspects of a community that make it more livable and age-friendly.

1.

Accessibility to and availability of outdoor spaces and buildings, like clean, safe, community centers, parks, and other recreational facilities.

2.

Safe and affordable modes of private and public transportation, including “complete street” types of initiatives that may include sidewalks, bike lanes, special bus lanes, etc.

3.

A wide range of housing options for older residents, including aging-in-place and other home medication programs, and housing that is accessible to transportation, community, and health services.

4.

Social participation, including access to leisure and cultural activities and opportunities for older residents to participate in social and civic engagement with their peers and younger people,

5.

Respect and social inclusion programs to support and promote ethnic and cultural diversity, plus programs to encourage multigenerational interaction and dialog, and programs to combat loneliness and isolation,

6.

Civic participation and employment to promote paid work and volunteer opportunities for older residents, and well as opportunities for older residents to engage in formulation of policies relevant to their lives.

7.

Communication and information that provides access to the use of technology to keep older residents connected to their community, friends and family, both near and far.

8.

Community support and health service including homecare services, clinics, programs to promote active aging (physical and healthy habits) and resources.

Miami Motel mounted last year with the support of a state grant. In 2017, New York became the first state in the nation to be certified agefriendly by AARP. The goal of the Age-Friendly Planning Program is to create and foster healthier, more integrated communities so that people of all ages can easily access services, take part in civic activities, and move around their communities using other alternatives to driving. Such communities are achieved through system-level changes, like offering incentives for age-friendly concepts, establishing new programs and procurement guidelines, or implementing regulatory changes. Last August, the Ontario County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution proclaiming its support for the initiative, acknowledging that Ontario County is already engaged in visible age-friendly actions. They include making accessibility improvements at parks and buildings, investing in active transportation options, expanding access to vehicle-based mobility options for residents of all ages, and meeting the needs of vulnerable populations in the face of COVID-19. National magazines have listed Canandaigua among their Top 10 communities in which to retire. Its vibrant arts and culture, education and faith communities, natural beauty and convenient, high-quality healthcare attract active adults from all over the country. A variety of high-quality housing stock, rental options and senior-care services make Ontario County a safe, stimulating and comfortable destination for individuals and families seeking a slower pace without sacrificing quality, value or convenience. Knowing that a demographic turning point looms on the horizon is, in many ways, an opportunity. Here, the knowledge is being used by local government to incorporate age-friendly strategies, priorities and principles into departmental, city, town and county plans, and to consider the age-friendly implications of its decisions and investments. It also reminds all of us that adopting principles of livability contribute to a healthy community for people of all ages, one that will attract new residents and retain existing ones.

Time to Play, Everybody

Welcome to the community’s unique new playground

H

istory is being made in Canandaigua this summer with the opening of Inclusion in Motion, the nation’s first universally designed and certified playground. Words can’t accurately describe what a monumental achievement it is (700 dedicated volunteers, more than $1 million raised, four+ years in the making …) or the countless ways it will enrich our community. The playground’s mission is to empower people of all abilities and ages to play, exercise, learn and socialize together. Just a few of the fun features there are a three-bay zipline with varied seating options, a fully-accessible inclusive wheelchair swing and merry-go-round, a “We-Saw” with high-backed bucket seats and safety harnesses, a cycler and an accessible cycler. Among its more practical features are a Sign Language sensory panel, a

mindfulness trail, a communication board with play-related and self-help pictograms, and a comprehensive way-finding system. The 26,000-square-foot space will also include a pavilion and concession stand, family bathrooms, and an accessible picnic-table area, all planned for this fall. Key components include the playground’s roomy ramps – double the width of standard accessibility standards – and its durable, highly elastic rubberized surface. “It spans every inch of play space. Without it, the playground would not be

fully accessible, let alone universally designed,” explains Nanci Bentley, who began the project with her husband Mike. Their son Michael, “MJ,” was their inspiration. When MJ was six months old he was diagnosed with Pallister Killian Syndrome. The rare disorder impacts his mobility, and causes epilepsy and cognitive delays. “Even though MJ is very determined, brave and strong, there are moments when he doesn’t get the opportunity to be included. It is heartbreaking in many ways,” Nanci said. “He’s in a wheelchair and his communication is not what everyone is used to, but MJ has a unique and funloving way about him,” she continued. “We want children to look at MJ and interact with him, and we want him to

learn from all the children he interacts with. Our solution is having a place where MJ and others with unique needs can always be included.” In 2015, MJ began working with pediatric physical therapist Sonya Smith (see the article that begins on page 28), who believes that children with disabilities can exceed all expectations through motion. Not surprisingly, MJ’s abilities flourished. “I mentioned to her the idea of an all-inclusive playground – I was aware of a family in another state who was fundraising for one,” Nanci said. “Sonya looked at me and said, ‘So, when are we getting our all-abilities playground?’ “Knowing we live in such a beautiful, supportive community, my husband

The playground’s community build was held last August. More than 700 volunteers from across the area came together to lift, tote, dig, pound, steady, and ready the playground’s components. Phase 1 – Equipment was completed in 2021 and the team moved on to Phase II. It includes customizing the way-finding system, planting shade trees, ordering equipment for the family bathrooms, and kiln firing – with Sis’ Ceramic Shop in Rochester – the ceramic tiles children painted during the community build.

Time to Play, Everybody Mike decided we should make this dream a reality. We put together a committee that included Sonya, and she was instrumental in the project’s success.” Good things happen there Inclusive playgrounds “provide a universally designed, sensory-rich environment that enables children to develop physically, socially, and emotionally,” according to Landscape Structures, a company that designs and creates inclusive play environments. “It’s an engaging place that provides the just-right level of challenge, a place that offers opportunities to succeed, and goes beyond minimum accessibility to create play experiences that meet a variety of needs and interests. At an inclusive playground, children of all abilities can interact with each other and do what all kids want to do: play.” To be truly inclusive, the playground must be not only accessible, but also an environment that facilitates parallel

play, adds dreambiginclusion.org. Parallel play occurs as children of all abilities play side-by-side, engaging with each other. It lays the groundwork for more complex social stages of play. “The socialization that is fostered from a play environment carries over into the community among all abilities, all ages,” says the website. When children with disabilities have access to inclusive playgrounds, it also benefits children who do not have disabilities. It teaches them that all people have similarities and differences, and that it’s important to accept children who are not like them. In turn, children learn to become more sensitive toward the needs of their peers and others around them. It’s a good life-skill we could all use. The free, open-to-the- public playground is located at 2640 Outhouse Road. To donate, visit dreambiginclusion.org/donate.

20 Million Things to Do “Athena was a multi-tasker,”

noted Randy Farnsworth at the presentation of the annual ATHENA Leadership Awards last November. In that way, the revered goddess in Greek mythology was not unlike 2021’s 13 award nominees. Athena juggled her role as patroness and defender of Athens with her jobs as goddess of wisdom, the arts, good counsel, justice, and heroic endeavor. Today’s women leaders balance their jobs as lawyers, health professionals, managers and business owners with their roles as students, wives and mothers. Many add in volunteering and community service with the philosophy, “If I don’t do it, who will?” As a testament to a woman’s capacity to simply do more,

eight different principles – not one, or two, or even five – make up the ATHENA Leadership model: living authentically, learning constantly, advocating fiercely, acting courageously, fostering collaboration, building relationships, giving back, and celebrating. The ATHENA Awards are not about which women multitask better than others, however. Two are chosen as recipients based on their professional excellence, community leadership and support of other women. Still, “The program is not a competition,” said Randy. “It’s a way to recognize the collective contributions of all the nominees.” Plato said it this way: “What is honored in a culture gets cultivated there.”

“L

et me introduce you to an individual who listens sincerely and knows everyone by name,” began Randy Farnsworth in his introduction of 2021 ATHENA Award Recipient Hazel Robertshaw, vice president of patient care services at UR Medicine/ Thompson Health. “She leads courageously but credits her team with all successes. Words like ‘sounding board,’ ‘advisor,’ ‘mentor,’ ‘insightful,’ ‘encouraging’ and ‘honest’ defined her ATHENA nomination and letters of support. “At UR/Thompson Health, she plays a key role in facilitating productive communication and effective decision making in a culture of inclusion and respect.” Throughout her career, Hazel has designed and headed programs that raised the bar on nursing as a whole. She led Thompson’s nurses through the Magnet Recognition Program, the highest level of nursing recognition in the country; and helped create a partnership between Thompson Health and Roberts Wesleyan College so that nurses within the organization could access affordable higher education. She feels that her greatest accomplishment has been “elevating other women to be their best selves, through higher education, certifications and their role in diverse leadership teams.” “In the words of a friend, Mandy is a kind and generous soul, a serial entrepreneur, and at her best when she is challenged and growing,” said Tracey Fuller, chair of the ATHENA steering committee. She was introducing ATHENA Young Professional Award Recipient Mandy Friend Gigliotti. Mandy is the founder of the Friend Team at Keller Williams Realty, and is a partner in her husband’s chiropractic business. In 2017, the two opened Full Heart Child Care center, which serves families in Rochester’s North Winton Village neighborhood. “Her career path is defined by a list of successful business ventures, as well as the development of other professional women,” added Tracey. Recognizing that work/ life balance is a challenge facing many women in real estate, Mandy created the “Build Your Business around Your Life” course. Her popular Pursue You online platform offers podcasts, coaching, and training to women in all industries.

ATHENA Nominees As associate director of community impact at the United Way of Greater Rochester & the Finger Lakes, Kari Buch works on initiatives that provide help in practical ways. By establishing the Ontario County Chapter of Women United, Kari gave women philanthropists a way to invest in the health, education, and financial stability of their local communities. Through the ALICE Program (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), Kari brought much-needed attention to the plight of the working poor. And during the pandemic, she oversaw Ontario County’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program. “I never had to say ‘I don’t have enough volunteers for a food drive,” she said. “Everyone stepped up.”

The Cotters donate 10 percent of their profits to local organizations including Light Hill, Gleaners Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, and more. As a community volunteer, Donna has served on the board of Wood Library and as PTO president for the Canandaigua City School District, where she helped improve curriculum and school facilities. During her 10 years with Literacy Volunteers, Donna saw more than 1,300 learners work toward a better life by developing reading and writing skills.

Judge Kristina “Kitty” Karle made history in 2018 when she was elected Ontario County’s first female judge. “My swearing-in ceremony took place in the very courtroom where Susan B. Anthony was tried for illegally casting her vote in a presidential election,” she recalls. “I felt her presence, and my favorite quote of hers, ‘Nothing is impossible,’ came to mind.” Kitty credits much of her success to the women mentors who offered their guidance and made her strong in the face of fear. Today she mentors young female attorneys, inspiring them to make a difference in their communities.

Freelance writer Nancy E. McCarthy began her career in the 1980s with a job at Chrysalis Records. In her role as video promotion manager, she received multi-platinum record-sales awards for her contribution to the international success of Billy Idol and Huey Lewis. Nancy went on to help found Women in Music, a nonprofit which works toward the advancement and support of women in the music industry. Locally, Nancy coordinated a program for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to help attract and retain volunteers. She is founder of the group that established and supports the Canandaigua Canine Campus.

Pam Metting

Pam Metting, a doctor of audiology, operated Finger Lakes Hearing Center in Geneva and Canandaigua for nearly 30 years. The practice was a founding member of Audigy, a national networking group for audiology and hearing, ENT, and allergy professionals. At the top of her retirement activity wish list was community service. To that end, she has chaired the Family Support Services and Women Build initiatives of the Ontario County Habitat for Humanity. Pam also volunteers for the Churches in Action food pantry and the Canandaigua Kiwanis Foundation, which raised more than $750,000 to support the Inclusion in Motion Playground (see the story on page 22).

ATHENA Young Professional Nominees COVID-19 introduced Kristen Bloom, Thompson Health’s director of infection prevention and emergency preparedness, to unprecedented challenges. Many in that role might have been consumed by fear and worry, but Kristen drew inspiration from watching the Thompson team “achieve the impossible” again and again. When disaster strikes, Kristen volunteers her skills to help – with Team Rubicon, an organization that provides relief to those affected by disaster, and as a firefighter in Macedon. “Become familiar with your moral compass and ethical boundaries,” she advises. “People will try to push those boundaries all the time. You need to be sure where your line is.” After working in different capacities at Habitat for Humanity, JJ Cotter became the first executive director of the Wayne County affiliate in 2020. Despite the unique challenges of the times, JJ led the organization to complete the building of its 27th Habitat home. “I’ve really only known working in the nonprofit world, where goals are always a moving target,” she said. “There’s no winning, or even ‘finishing,’ because your community continually needs your services. But if you’re lucky enough to grow and build capacity at your organization, you can increase your services and make an even bigger impact on your community.”

Diana Perry, assistant vice president, community office manager at Canandaigua National Bank & Trust, considers her graduation from Finger Lakes Community College a huge professional and personal accomplishment. It wasn’t easy balancing college classes, a full-time career, and single motherhood. She hopes her story will inspire others to work toward their goals during difficult times. Among her mentors is her father. Diana watched as he volunteered for one organization after another, “to help build the strong, vibrant community we have today,” she said. “I’m sure he thought, many times, that I wasn’t paying attention, but I continue to follow his inspiring example.” Pediatric physical therapist Dr. Sonya Smith is a devoted advocate for the littlest members of our community. Before opening her own practice in Victor called Muddy Sneakers Physical Therapy, she worked in settings that ranged from neonatal intensive care units to public schools. Dr. Smith is also the founder of Inclusion in Motion, a nonprofit that is bringing the first universally designed and certified playground in the country to Canandaigua (see the story on page 22). “The children I work with inspire me every day,” she said. “They inspire me to expand my knowledge, question the norm, and effect change.”

Doing Well by Doing Good The Chamber honors inspiring businesses for effecting positive change in our community

I

t’s easy to take our ability to read for granted. As our brains digest road signs, email correspondence, receipts for purchases, cooking instructions and so much more each day, we can’t imagine the enormity of the stumbling block that is illiteracy. Liz Searle understands. As executive director of Literacy Volunteers of Ontario Yates, she sees the struggle every day. But she also sees the successes – among non-traditional

learners who need help earning their GED, with adults for whom English is a second language, and with others who were always too ashamed to ask for help. Literacy Volunteers and its tutors start them on their path to literacy, and the learners achieve the rest. Many apply for US citizenship, receive their GED and even start their own businesses. For its efforts on behalf of those individuals – and the way their work collectively lifts our community as a whole

– Literacy Volunteers was honored as a Humanitarian this year with a Business Inspiration Award from the Chamber of Commerce. “There are countless actors in our regional community who do inspiring things all the time,” commented Ethan Fogg, chamber president and CEO. “The annual awards we present are a way to meaningfully acknowledge their positive impact on our community, and the ways they improve the quality of life for all of us.” In addition to “Humanitarian,” Business Inspiration Awards were presented in four additional categories.

Left: Liz Searle, executive director of Literacy Volunteers of Ontario Yates, chats with Chamber President & CEO Ethan Fogg and Board Vice Chair Michael Mills during the 2021 Business Inspiration Awards presentation. The event’s unique format included a keynote speaker and personal interviews. It was recorded and streamed on Finger Lakes Television in February. Above: The Factory 243 campus off of Gorham Street occupies the former site of the once-thriving Lisk Manufacturing Company, which closed in 1965.

It took a Visionary Investor to create Factory 243 Not far from downtown Canandaigua, in the former factory buildings of G.W. Lisk Manufacturing, is a complex of industrial, loft-style apartments – Factory 243 – unlike anything else in the Finger Lakes Region. The attractive and productive multiuse campus not only blends urban chic with small-town charm, “it will positively impact this community for generations to come,” noted Ethan Fogg. Development of the property was a risk – it had become a brownfield with aged, abandoned factory buildings. “But Don Lasher, president of Capstone Construction and Real Estate of Rochester, had a vision,” Ethan continued. “He made a long-term investment and created market value and stunningly attractive residential opportunities in a community that doesn’t have any extra real estate. It’s become a big brother to some of the small leaps we’re seeing in downtown buildings with second- and third-story redevelopment.” Michael Mills, founder of VALEOpr, agreed. “In big cities, adaptive reuse projects like this are almost a dime a dozen, but they’re always catalysts for growth.” (continued on page 38)

Auto Wash is an Environmental Champion The automatic car-washing company has been a member of the Canandaigua business community since 1981, and operates four locations in Ontario County. In 2021 it achieved carbon neutrality – no small feat in an industry known for consuming vast amounts of water, gas, and electricity. Figuring out where they could conserve began by taking a good, hard look at their operations, machinery, and equipment, explained company president Bobby Marchanese. First, he and his team reduced the size of the nozzles on their high-pressure water hoses. “They had to be just the right size to use as little water as possible while still cleaning a car effectively.” Next, they installed efficient Nest smart thermostats in all their locations to reduce their natural gas consumption. The programmable devices can be accessed remotely from a smart phone so staff can respond more quickly to changes in outdoor temperatures. And then there were the motors, a lot of them, that run the equipment. “They range in size from three horsepower to 30 horsepower,” explained Bobby. “Their starters required a huge inrush of electricity to get them going every day.” So he and his team swapped them out, opting for soft starters and variable frequency trundle drives to produce a gentle ramp-up to full speed. It was a significant investment. “Becoming carbon neutral is a huge milestone for us,” he said. “Now we’re looking for ways to incorporate carbon-free energy into our operations.”

Finger Lakes Community College Innovates for its learners Recognizing the need to reduce barriers to higher education for individuals facing scheduling conflicts, transportation challenges, and even quarantine, FLCC launched the HyFlex Learning Program last year. “It became a game changer for our learners who typically have more responsibilities than ‘traditional’ college students,” explained Ryan McCabe, FLCC’s associate vice president of academic technology & high impact practices. “Many of them have full-time jobs in addition to attending college. Some are also parents of young children or involved in full-time elder care.” With HyFlex, students can choose when and where to attend classes. “The technology, combined with the high-quality equipment in our classrooms – microphones, cameras, screens – give students three different options,” Ryan continued. “The first, of course, is to attend class on campus. The second is to participate online, synchronously with the class, so they can interact with the instructor and other students in real time. The third option – since the class is also recorded – is to view it online at a time that’s convenient for them. “It’s something we started working on before the pandemic, but when COVID hit we accelerated the rollout,” he added. “From the beginning, the level of flexibility and convenience has really made a difference in the lives of our learners.”

29 Design Studio is owned, managed and Empowered By Women Maureen Ballatori is founder of the Geneva-based creative marketing agency that specializes in food, beverage and agricultural brands. The graphic designer began her business in 2007

shortly after becoming a mom. “I always wanted to work for myself,” she explained, “I was freelancing at home with two small children and I thought, ‘If my life is going to be crazy anyway, why not have the craziness on my own terms?’ Then, as I grew the business as a working mother, I became

sympathetic to what other working parents go through.” Through her own experiences she’s been able to support her employees in their parenting journeys, recognizing the realities of working with little ones home during the pandemic and their potential to create excellent work. In accepting the award, Ballatori noted that when it comes to diversity, 29 Design Studio has further to go. “We are women-led, but that is not a diverse environment,” she said. In addition to actively seeking to diversify the voices on her team, she is committed to ensuring access. “Our philosophy is remote-first – that’s making the work work for you in the way you need it to.”

Consistently Celebrating People In Recognition of Lifetime Achievement The Ontario County Chamber of Commerce recently honored Jeff Friend with its 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. The senior vice president and director of branch & market development at Lyons National Bank (LNB) received the coveted silver bowl at the chamber’s membership celebration, The Q, at Lincoln Hill Farms. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a deserving individual who has demonstrated a lifetime of exceptional service by selflessly, and without compensation, changing and enriching the lives of countless others in the community. “Jeff has always recognized relationships as the foundation for success and fulfillment,” wrote one of his nominators. Another said, “If you know Jeff, you know he is a relationship builder, with a serving heart that offers his talents, knowledge and never-say-never attitude to accomplish whatever task is put in front of him.”

Applauding Social Entrepreneurs “Sam Viggiani cares about his business,” wrote Andrew Biernat, the Chamber’s director of member relations, on his blog Good Company. “I could hear it in the tone of his voice. “When Sam talked about his business, Uber Lawn & Landscape, he was confident and self-assured. While the work they do is physically demanding, it makes a visible impact on the community.” Because Sam is also passionate about helping those in need, 5 percent of his top-line revenue is donated to The Spot, a local non-profit dedicated to serving school-age students in need. And, in a new partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Uber Lawn & Landscape will be donating time, materials and landscaping expertise to beautify new Habitat houses when they’re built. “This is the mindset of a social entrepreneur.” According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a social entrepreneur is a for-profit business model that strives to make a positive impact on social issues or the environment. Some social entrepreneurships are based solely on that mission. An example is Better World Books. It reuses and recycles books through sales on its website to promote literacy around the world. Others, such as Uber Lawn & Landscape, are regular businesses that have taken on a cause and made the support of it a part of their business. “When I asked Sam how other businesses could help, he offered this advice: “Start small. You don’t have to write large checks to be giving back and making a difference.” Uber Lawns & Landscape is a family-owned and operated full service lawn and landscape company in Canandaigua, serving the greater Southeastern Rochester region. When It Became ONChamber In March, The Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce and the Victor Chamber of Commerce joined forces to become the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce. “Delivering Canandaigua Chamber’s enhanced services to the Victor business community provides a rare opportunity for us to rebrand,” noted Ethan Fogg, president and CEO of the organization. “It’s a brand that symbolizes the power of what we can accomplish collectively for the more than 700 member-businesses in our combined service areas. Jack Marren, Town of Victor Supervisor, noted the power in the group’s increased numbers, and said, “I think it’s a wonderful concept.” Jason DiBiase, chair of the former Victor Chamber added, “The benefits of being part of the new Ontario County Chamber are beyond measure. I can’t wait to see what the future holds with this partnership.” Michelle Pedzich, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Canandaigua National Bank and Trust, is ONChamber’s first board chair. “We’ve been a member of the local chamber since 1910,” she said. “It plays 44 ONCanandaigua 2022

From the romantic steamboat era to our modern windsurfing times, Canandaigua Lake has provided residents and tourists with endless hours of recreation, prosperous livelihoods and treasured moments of nature’s quiet solitude. The splendor of the lake and its surrounding rolling hills combine to make this area truly one of the most beautiful places in the United States. It is not hard to imagine why the Senecas and countless others since then have chosen to make their home near Canandaigua Lake.

anandaigua Lake is located 29 miles southeast of the city of Rochester, and lies within both Ontario and Yates counties. The lake is bordered on the north by the city of Canandaigua, and on the south by the settlement of Woodville. For many years the lake trout was the only salmonid in Canandaigua Lake. At the same time, the lake supported fisheries for lake whitefish and burbot. Smelt, stocked as an additional food source, were planted by the Conservation Department (now The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, DEC) in 1925, and rainbow trout were added in 1936. By 1953 alewives became established in the lake via unknown sources. The success of the introduced smelt and, particularly, alewives, led to improved growth of adult lake and rainbow trout and set the stage for successful brown trout introduction (begun in the early 1970s). Currently, Canandaigua Lake supports important fisheries for lake trout, brown trout and rainbow trout. “Lakers” and “brown” are maintained by annual stocking, but the rainbow trout fishery is sustained entirely by natural reproduction, mostly in Naples Creek and its tributaries. In addition to its popular trout fisheries, Canandaigua produces some excellent angling for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel and panfish, including yellow perch, blue gills, pumpkinseed, rock bass, black crappie and bullheads. — dec.ny.gov

Go With the Flow it, it encircled the village, trapping the people inside. Those who tried to escape were eaten. One day, a young warrior shot the beast with an arrow and it slid down the hill into the lake, spitting out the heads of its victims along the way. The large round stones around the lake are said to be their skulls, and little has been able to grow in what is said to be the path of the serpent’s fall. Some say the serpent still lurks in the deepest part of the lake, and some residents have claimed to have seen it. One of Bare Hill’s upper trails leads to a large boulder known as Council Rock. There, every Labor Day weekend, the Native American traditional ceremony of lighting a bonfire as thanksgiving for peace and an abundant harvest takes place. This signals the beginning of the “Ring of Fire” or “Festival of Lights” when landowners around the perimeter of the lake light celebratory flares. Throughout the year, Bare Hill Unique Area is open for recreation. Hiking and backcountry camping are also popular. At the bottom of the lake lay the remains of two historic boats that caught fire and sank. One is believed to be Lady of the Lake, the first steamboat to travel across the

lake for commercial service in 1827. It burned and sank near the present Canandaigua Pier. The other is believed to be the Onnalinda, the largest of the lake’s steamboats, considered the “Queen of the Steamboat Era.” It launched in 1888 and was eventually dismantled and set on fire, mostly likely due to a decline in business. It floated out to the eastern end of the lake to sink. Steamboats carried passengers and goods across the lake to the City of Canandaigua until the last steamboat, the Onanda, was moved to the Hudson River in 1924.

anandaigua Lake has a long history as a paddling destination, according to Life in the Finger Lakes magazine, and “How can we access the lake?” is one of the top questions from visitors to Ontario County. So in 2019, The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council, Finger Lakes Visitors Connection, and a host of other partners implemented the Canandaigua Lake Water Trail. It is focused on enriching non-motorized boating on the lake. The trail is comprehensive, with 20 launching, destination and emergency access sites across Canandaigua Lake. It’s designed to provide paddlers with a high-quality experience, whether they’re novice paddlers who want to get out on the water for a couple of hours or very experienced long-distance paddlers. Its website, canandaigualakewatertrail.com has become a hub for helping paddlers plan their trip by organizing launch and destination sites into itineraries. The itineraries can be customized to serve paddlers at various skill levels, and accommodate

Among the plan’s goals is to establish a management, education and public involvement framework for the trail that addresses the seven best management practices required by the National Water Trails System of the National Park Service. It connects Americans to the nation’s waterways and strengthens the conservation and restoration of these waterways through the mutual support and cooperation of federal, state, local, and nonprofit entities. “In establishing a national system of exemplary water trails, these trails have become a catalyst for protecting and restoring the health of local waterways and surrounding lands,” says the National Park Service. “They are building a community that mentors and promotes the development of water trails, and shares best management practices with other water trails.”

Cannabis can enhance the world-class visitor experience here in the Finger Lakes

A

s a lifelong resident of the Finger Lakes region and a professional working in the travel industry here, I was curious to discover how legalized marijuana in New York State would impact the tourism industry. Admittedly, I had not paid much attention to the growing cannabis industry, and I soon discovered I had my own implicit biases about the types of visitors this new industry would attract. Memories of high school and college parties, and images of Woodstock came to mind. I decided the best way to learn was to talk to an expert, so I turned to Brian Applegarth from California-based Cultivar Strategies, a company that helps destinations prepare for and capitalize on the emerging cannabis-related travel trend. Founder of the California Cannabis Tourism Association, Brian has worked in the space since 2015. In an interview for my travel and tourism podcast, “Destination on the Left,” Brian helped take the mystery out of cannabis travel as we discussed the multitude of opportunities and great tourism potential that can accompany legal adult-use cannabis.

Grow It and They Will Come During our discussion, I learned what cannabis experiences can look like when they’re embraced by a destination. “As wine pairs with food, cannabis pairs with experiences,” Brian explained. Here are some key takeaways from his interview that may help guide cannabis tourism in the Finger Lakes and beyond. Who, exactly, are “they”? Based on a study conducted by MMGY Travel Intelligence in collaboration with Brian’s company Cultivar Strategies, nearly 30 percent of the active leisure-travel audience is motivated to access a cannabisrelated experience at a destination. An important characteristic of that audience is a higher-than-average median household income – $50,000 and above. Active cannabis travelers are primarily interested in visiting a dispensary, followed by trying CBD or THC edibles. They are self-described foodies (47 percent), beach bums (36 percent), outdoor adventurers (35 percent), wine enthusiasts (29 percent), craft beer lovers (25 percent) and sports addicts (23 percent). Based on those characteristics alone, it is easy to see why cannabis tourism potential in the Finger Lakes is so great. Among the subsegments of the

cannabis travel audience are the “cannacurious.” According to the study, one-third of the cannabis-motivated travel audience has never tried cannabis before. The canna-curious are particularly intrigued by the health and wellness benefits of cannabis and its potential to improve quality of life. The canna-curious are looking for a cannabis experience that has an educational component, like learning about CBD and its antiinflammatory properties. There is also a “wellness traveler” subset with people who are focused on mental and spiritual health. They would like to unlock new discussions

around holistic health, and see cannabis as a tool for wellbeing, balance, and homeostasis. Finally, there are “cannabisserious” travelers who are experienced users and are seeking specific cannabis related experiences. What other destinations are doing to capture the market The high percentage of cannacurious leisure travelers combined with the high interest in cannabis tourism is creating new opportunities for destinations all over the world. Those who want to cater to this new market are highlighting the benefits of the cannabis plant and how powerful and positive they can be. Some destinations have become holistic, and position cannabis as an enhancement to their existing inmarket experience. For instance, they may offer cannabis as a targeted sensory enhancement tool for travelers visiting art exhibits, restaurants, spas, and other attractions. Based on what other destinations are doing, tourism businesses here

– not only dispensaries, but also accommodations, restaurants, museums and other attractions – should be making plans now to meet the needs of this market. Will they incorporate CBD or THC into their experiences? Even if a hospitality business is not actively seeking this audience or providing experiences around cannabis, they should understand the needs of the audience and how to welcome them. Among the ideas and experiences available to leisure travelers here and in other states are glamping getaways and “bud & breakfasts.” Other ideas range from painting classes – called “Puff and Paints” – to spa experiences and sushiand joint-rolling events. In California, a more mature cannabis market, there’s been a recent uptick in the number of business travelers who want to visit cannabis lounges and other progressive destinations. Their goal is to have an educational experience that they can also implement back home. One of the exciting revelations of the MMGY study is how much the cannabis market overlaps the food- and wine-enthusiast markets. Clever destinations have used the overlap to their advantage, combining their guests’ consumption of all three in fun ways. Examples include offering travelers a cannabis experience that stimulates their appetite, accentuates the palette, or makes the aroma of food more vibrant. Assigning intention to the setting and timing of cannabis consumption elevates the sophistication of the experience, making it richer, deeper and more meaningful. A safe and successful experience Safety is a key factor in the success of the cannabisrelated travel trend. Education is key, for the tourists and the destination alike. Cannabis offers an effects-based experience that, without the proper instruction, may not

alifornia’s Humboldt County, the nation’s top marijuanaproducing region, is the center of the state’s weed-tourism explosion, reports MJ Brand Insights. Like the Finger Lakes, the area’s natural resources, unspoiled beaches, and historic communities beckon visitors. Humboldt Social, a group of local businesses that “normalizes connections” between hospitality and cannabis, believes that if Napa Valley can create a healthy tourism economy around wine, Humboldt can do the same around weed. Visitors at Scotia Lodge, the group’s new hospitality property, can order from in-room menus that feature edibles, pre-rolled smokes, and THC-infused drinks from a dispensary in nearby Eureka. be a positive one, especially given the fact that many leisure travelers have little experience with cannabis. It’s essential that businesses understand their responsibility for the safety of their visitors, and take that into consideration when they’re planning new experiences to offer them. By doing so, they can best provide the information their visitors need, promote the safety of their experiences, and share the story about what made the experience memorable. Inviting visitors to ingest cannabis requires considering all the options, including the many methods of consumption and the THC dosage. If a canna-curious visitor eats too many edibles, for instance, it can be a terrible experience that leaves a negative impression of the destination – the opposite of what it wanted to accomplish in building memorable experiences for its guests. But more than just understanding how to use cannabis responsibly, it is also filling in the information gaps and providing the guardrails around its use. Compare ingesting cannabis to craft beer, another tourism trend. Craft beer is available in a wide spectrum of options that range from high ABV to non-alcoholic and everything in between. Tasting rooms are great sources of information and serve as a guide

to visitors to make sure that their experience is safe and enjoyable. The travel industry can be a platform that helps educate consumers about cannabis through storytelling, and experiences that take it above and beyond the product purchase. Look for information that highlights the positive aspects of the plant – from hemp as a renewable resource, CBD as a wellness tool that provides relaxation and reduces anxiety, and the more effects-based THC component that should, with the right dose, be a fun and positive experience.

Enjoying cannabis in the Finger Lakes Learning about the cannabis industry, plus the plant’s properties and responsible use, is a necessary first step for everyone in the Finger Lakes tourism industry. Collaboration among our destination marketing organizations, the hospitality industry, and the cannabis industry can give the Finger Lakes and New York State a competitive advantage. Curating a cannabis consumer experience in a mindful way can complement the existing tourist experience overall. This article appeared in the premier issue of FLX420 Magazine, April 2022.

inger Lakes Community College has long been a leader in plant education and management. It launched its wellrespected horticulture degree program in 1973. In 2011, FLCC introduced a two-year viticulture and wine technology degree – the first such program in the Northeast – in response to the wine industry’s need for skilled workers. Now it’s offering a cannabis biology and cultivation track within its horticulture program. The first students enrolled in the fall of 2020. The track consists of three classes that provide a background in the biology and cultivation of the cannabis plant, as well as the regulations associated with this culturally and chemically complex product. 1. Cannabis: Biology to industrial application This course is a survey of the history of cannabis (Cannabis sativa) and its biology, breeding, chemistry, pharmacology and downstream uses, from biofuel and pulp feedstocks to medicinal application. Students develop an in-depth knowledge of cannabis, enabling them to explain present perspectives on its production and utility in human society and agriculture. Shawn Kenaley, instructor, has a doctorate in plant pathology and phytopathology from West Virginia University. 2. Cannabis cultivation This course will familiarize students with the growth requirements of cannabis. Topics include the cannabis life cycle, propagation, growing techniques, environmental requirements for proper growth, pest pressure and management, and harvest techniques. Students receive practical greenhouse experience using hemp. Casey Berg, instructor, has a bachelor’s degree in plant sciences from Rutgers University and serves as cultivation manager for Columbia Care, a cultivator, manufacturer and provider of medical and adult use cannabis products. 3. Regulations of cannabis cultivation This course introduces students to the legal issues related to medicinal cannabis production and best practices as they relate Photo courtesy flcc.edu

to regulations. The course covers laws that govern cannabis cultivation, distribution and possession, and consumption by medical patients. Students will learn state laws regarding cannabis cultivation as they relate to medicinal use and to impacts on the state budget. The course also explores the recent history of cannabis and ways in which federal laws impact cultivation. Glenna Colaprete-Hudson, founder of Glenna’s CBD Best Oil with two retail locations near Rochester, is the instructor. Licensed as a New York State grower, cultivator and retailer, Glenna not only develops and sells her award-winning line of natural and locally-farmed CBD products, she also serves on the Rochester Cannabis Coalition Committee, and on the New York State Cannabis Growers and Processors Committee on Social Equity Education, Retail and Sustainability. “There is so much to learn from this amazing plant,” she says. “I thoroughly enjoy studying the cannabinoids, but the sustainability aspects of the whole plant in remediation, packaging, etc. are just as fascinating. The medicinal sustainability and economic elements alone could be so impactful to the residents of New York State – in addition to the simple benefits of using it for recreational purposes.” Beyond providing education for workforce development, FLCC has sought to draw attention to social issues surrounding the legalization of cannabis. In March, the college held a Cannabis Business Incubator Symposium with a panel discussion on ensuring social equity as the industry grows in New York. Among the topics was the state’s plan to give the first licenses for sale of adult-use cannabis to those who had been charged with cannabis-related criminal offenses prior to legalization. FLCC is one of 10 SUNY colleges that offer certificates, training programs and degrees tied to the marijuana and hemp industries in an effort to help students start careers in New York’s emerging industry. Maureen Ballatori from 29 Design Studio set the stage this year with her keynote presentation, “How to Use Data to Grow Your Brand.” In it, she explained the four steps to effective brand building – Plan, Implement, Analyze and Repeat – and walked participants through case studies of successful brand-building campaigns. In a practical handson workshop, Maureen taught them how to analyze their data – and draw insights from data that matters – using their smartphone or tablet. A panel discussion entitled, “Positioning Product for Max Impact” featured local entrepreneurs who shared marketing success stories, best practices for understanding target markets, and communicating the benefits of a product in a compelling way. An additional panel comprised of leaders in area hospitality and tourism shared strategies designed to differentiate businesses from their competitors through customer service, a strong online presence, giving back to their community, and more. Interspersed among the structured presentations were networking opportunities and small-group discussion sessions. The day concluded with a wine-paired, table d’hote supper.

new educational space and tasting room expansion is taking place at New York Kitchen, the Canandaigua non-profit dedicated to all things food and drink in the Finger Lakes. Called the Sandy Parker Terrace, the three-season patio is located outside the building’s ground floor near the main entrance. It is named in honor of New York Kitchen board member Sandy Parker, who died of cancer last June. Sandy’s love for Canandaigua, her desire to showcase New York-based companies, and her wish to give back to our region came together at New York Kitchen, notes Rob Sands, chair of the board of New York Kitchen. “She would have loved this terrace for its potential to merge those interests and also bring people together.” A capital campaign was held to fund the project. Donations from community members were matched by

Sandy’s husband Dutch Summers and the Sands Family Foundation. According to Alyssa Belasco, New York Kitchen’s executive director, the terrace improves and enhances New York Kitchen’s capacity, but also its adaptability to showcase New York’s continually booming craft beverage industry – “an agricultural product born of personal passion and seasonal elements.” She added: “The Sandy Parker Terrace will give our community an inviting outdoor space that fuels partnership, collaboration, and creative exploration around the quality, diversity, and economic impact of New York State’s bounty.” New York Kitchen is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that originated as a collaboration among Constellation Brands, Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the New York Wine and Grape

The brewery began as VB (“Victor Brewery”) in 2014, by Tom Bullinger, a hobby home brewer for 30 years, and his wife Catherine. At the core of their

lineup was a gluten-free beer called Illuminati, which is still brewed today. Twin Elder was born when the business changed hands in 2018. The past 10 years have been banner brewery years here, beginning with the passing of the Farm Brewery Law in 2012. Modeled after the Farm Winery Act of 1976, the brewery law created a license that permits craft brewers to operate as long as they use New York State-grown products. The law made it easier to start a brewery, and gave brewers opportunities to expand their businesses by also opening restaurants and selling their products at farmers markets. The law also exempted

Chris Thomas and his wife Leah

small brewers from paying annual fees to the State Liquor Authority. The resurgence of hops as a crop in New York State also impacted the local

brewing industry here, according to the Finger Lakes Beer Trail guide, What’s Brewing in the Finger Lakes. In 1999, Pederson Farms in Seneca Castle, near Geneva, planted the first commercial hops to be grown in New York since Prohibition. The popularity of craft beer is also the result of consumer demand for something fresher and better-tasting. As What’s Brewing explains, “Because they brew in small batches, craft brewers can experiment with a blend of various ingredients, including seasonal fruits and vegetables, often resulting in some very interesting flavor profiles. Whatever the combination, the resulting craft beer is a deliciously fresh, eco-conscious product appealing to today’s locavorian-focused consumer.” Twin Elder moved to a new location on Victor’s Colville Street this year. It has more room inside for seating and events, plus a front porch, patio, and more than an acre of land outside. The building also boasts a full kitchen;

future plans include lunch and dinner service. Right now, Amazing Grain Bakery’s Salty Bread is on the menu, plus pub pretzels, chips & salsa, cheese boards and charcuterie. The brewery’s signature events – weekly “Bunco for Babes,” “Trivia!” and truck/car/bike “Cruise Nights” – are augmented by monthly “Tacos, Trails and Ales” at a local park. And then there’s the music. It’s always live and sometimes daily. There’s an open jam at Twin Elder every Tuesday, with surprise special guests and local musicians on other nights. Owner Chris and his former business partner Chase Lowry are among them. They perform as the acoustic duo Panda Handstand. And don’t forget the beer. “Brewmaster Tristan Main came on board in 2021, and he’s pumping out some killer beers,” reports twinlderbrewery.com. “He also stays true to many of our long-running staples that are always on tap.”

Love the Home

YOU’RE IN (continued from page 15) During their book discussions, the ladies may disagree on the merits of the story or which actor should play the main character if the book becomes a movie, but they’re unanimous in their enthusiasm for the discussion’s venue. “In order for us to stay together for 22 years, there has to be personal interaction and caring, which only works because we’re allowed, literally, into each other’s worlds,” Heather explains. “Not to be overly dramatic, but when we discuss books in a friend’s home, we remember what’s going on in her life. We can see, possibly, how it influenced her selection of the book we read and how she feels about what happens in it.” According to sociologist Christy Craig, PhD, “Talking about literature is not only about talking about literature. It is also examining one’s ideas, identities, thoughts, sense of self,” she told The Washington Post. From 2013 to 2015, during her research on book clubs in both the U.S. and Ireland, Christy interviewed 53 women, ages 19 to 80, who participated in reading groups. She found that they turned to book clubs in times of upheaval; as a way of seeking wisdom both from books and from one another. Women

relied on their book clubs at pivotal moments in life: after college, for instance, following divorce or the death of a spouse, or after their children left home. Statistical and anecdotal data indicate that the majority of book club members are women. While men may be in the minority, they are no less involved than their female counterparts, reports Strategic Library magazine. Its research revealed that when men were asked what they like about book clubs, their common responses matched those of women: a book club gets them to read a variety of books that they would not read otherwise and they enjoyed the discussions. A number reported that their perceptions of book clubs changed when they joined one. The Ladies of the Livre is one of several book clubs in Canandaigua, says Wood Library’s Executive Director Jenny Goodemote. “I couldn’t tell you how many, but we often help members source their club’s selection.” The Pioneer Library System, which serves Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming and Livingston counties, maintains discussion kits to lend for about 70 different books, complete with multiple copies and discussion questions.

The New York Times estimates that today, more than 5 million people in the U.S. are members of book clubs large – Oprah’s has 2 million members; Reese Witherspoon’s 600,000 – and small. (When the nine-member book group of Belgrade, Maine, met in a park gazebo during the pandemic, the story was featured on local television news). “Every writer I know of is anxious to get the attention of book clubs,” wrote California-based novelist Marj Charlier, in the Press Enterprise of inland Southern California. “As book clubs have become more popular, they have taken on new iterations. Today there are internet-only book clubs, and book clubs that focus on a particular genre, like romance or fantasy. There are library book clubs and city book clubs. There are clubs that identify with a particular political party, AfricanAmerican book clubs, and book clubs that center around books about motherhood.” During COVID, many book clubs were started online where they flourished, thanks to Zoom and other virtual meeting platforms. The Ladies of the Livre met in-person outside, weather permitting, but when it didn’t permit, they didn’t meet.

“It’s funny – it never crossed my mind to have this group do Zoom,” said Adrienne Kantz, a Lady of the Livre since 2006. “I am now realizing that looking forward to the time we would resume in-person meetings had a positive effect, and helped me get through the isolation.” Like many in the group, she and her husband spent some isolation time sprucing up their home – a reflection of a nationwide, pandemic-era trend. Spending on home improvements increased by an average of $745 per household in 2020, according to a HomeAdvisor survey of 5,000 homeowners. Many of the projects required the services of a professional contractor, while others were decidedly DIY. “We had a contractor friend work on repairing and painting our kitchen,” Adrienne reports. “Other ‘improvements’ included hoeing out and organizing lots of family files.” In her book, How Reading Changed My Life, author Anna Quindlen wrote, “Books are the plane and the train and the road. They are the destination and the journey. They are home.” For the Ladies of the Livre, books and home are two parts to a whole.

Freestyle Skiing Junior Championships at Bristol Mountain. Cooking classes, wine tasting flights and light bites were available at NYKitchen, and horse-drawn wagon rides were available downtown. The inaugural celebration of winter in Canandaigua had a dual purpose. As a fundraiser, all the proceeds from its $10 admission fee went to the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes. As an effective kickoff to a new marketing initiative, aptly named Winter in Canandaigua, it showcased the exciting, delicious and fun experiences available here, even in the cold. “Yes!” cheered the economic development and tourism leaders who collaborated with Pulito: Bristol Mountain, Finger Lakes Visitors Connection, the Canandaigua Merchants Association/BID, and the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce. “Committing to Winter in Canandaigua was easy for us,” says Chamber President and CEO Ethan Fogg. “Our focus is to magnify our members’ investment across the region, and engage local and traveling consumers every day of the year. This thoughtful, multiyear plan will bring more people, more resources and more opportunities to the Finger Lakes during a time of year when we need them most. It’s brilliant!” Part of what makes it so smart are the many opportunities for year-round tourism that already exist here, noted Pulito, along with the many Canandaigua-committed organizations that are more-than-willing to collaborate on the effort. Case in point: the Sands family of Constellation Brands. Longtime champions of this region, the Sands joined The Lake House as a major underwriter of the Finger Lakes Winter Carnival and Winter in Canandaigua. Also stepping up are Finger Lakes business owners who have much to gain by marketing Canandaigua as a yearround destination. “Being part of this effort is great for our business and the community at large,” Bristol Mountain’s

Way Cool Steve Fuller told LOCATE Finger Lakes Business Journal. Jennifer Newman of Young Lion brewery agreed. “We never stop brewing, but we see a drop in visitors in the winter months,” she said in the Alpacas from Lazy same article. “The opportunity Acres were special guests at the Lake to change the mindset of tourists House during the so that they see the Finger Lakes carnival. as a place to visit year-round is something our company will actively promote. We want visitors to return often.” Valerie Knoblauch from the Finger Lakes Visitors Connection added this: “Tourism is the lifeblood of the Finger Lakes with multi-billions of tourist dollars brought in by the millions of people who visit our destinations yearly. Encouraging new visitors, as well as returning visitors, during all our remarkable seasons will make a big difference as we grow our year-round appeal and profile. It’s all about connecting with people in ways that open minds to new things to do in Canandaigua and the entire area; encouraging our residents and our visitors to get out and enjoy the seasons and the unique FLX experiences, no matter what the weather brings.”

Carnival-goers enjoyed the food trucks on Canandaigua’s City Pier.

Canandaigua lakeside in winter is warm and cozy at The Lake House.

Way Cool Generations of visitors know Canandaigua as “The Chosen Spot” for summer vacations. But with everything it has to offer in cooler and cold months, it’s clear that it can be a tourist destination year-round.

C

hristopher Pulito, the new general manager at The Lake House on Canandaigua, recognized the potential right away. The former GM of The Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid believes Canandaigua can do what Lake Placid did, only in reverse. “There, we turned winter tourists into summer visitors,” Christopher told LOCATE Finger Lakes Business Journal in March. “In Canandaigua, we are turning summer visitors into winter tourists.” To that end, he and The Lake House became the driving force behind the first-ever Finger Lakes Winter Carnival in March. In fact, the luxury lakeside resort – already all set for winter with a skating rink and outdoor fire pits, hot tubs and a heated pool – hosted many of the activities that took place

during the busy three-day event. In its timber-frame Event Barn, The Lake House showcased 15 to 20 specialty businesses each day, organized around three different themes. • “SHOP the Finger Lakes” featured a variety of local independent retailers, from Blue Door Boutique women’s clothing to F. Oliver’s fine olive oils and balsamic vinegars. • “SIP” day highlighted breweries, wineries, cider houses, and distilleries; and • “TASTE” day focused on area restaurants and bars. The carnival’s busy, family-friendly lineup also included ice skating inside at the Canandaigua Civic Center rink, a food truck rodeo at the City Pier, outdoor games for the family at Kershaw Park, fireworks at night, and the Northeast (continued on page 88)
