SUMMER 2023
Presented by the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce, ONHandbook is an intentional departure from traditional tourist materials. Its classic good looks, sense of humor and inside perspective on how to fill a weekend in the Finger Lakes make it a friend you want to get to know better! Plus, we’ve chosen paper stock that folds for easy storage and takes well to notes made in pencil or ballpoint. It’s part travel guide, part little black book and part objet d’art.
Whether you choose to make it a bucket list, a travel journal or a focal point on your coffee table, we’re confident that ONHandbook will become one of your closest friends in the Finger Lakes. And while you’re out exploring together, share images of your activities – and your ONHandbook – on our social media pages.
Looking forward to what’s next!

Finger Lakes by the Numbers
CANANDAIGUA LAKE is the fourth largest of the Finger Lakes and contains Skenoh Island (formerly Squaw Island), one of two islands in the area. Its neighbors have their own unique set of characteristics. Here’s a closer look at some of the neighboring lakes.
LONGEST LAKE
Seneca and Cayuga lakes, which each have a length of 38 miles, tie for this title. That’s more than 12 times longer than Canadice Lake, the smallest of the main Finger Lakes.
DEEPEST LAKE
Seneca Lake stretches an impressive 618 feet. If you were to duplicate the Statue of Liberty and stack them on top of each other at the bottom of the lake, they’d be just a few feet from breaking the water’s surface.
WIDEST LAKE
Cayuga Lake’s girth at its widest point is 3.5 miles. In comparison, the Straits of Mackinac, which separates Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas, is four miles.
MOST UNIQUE LAKE
Keuka Lake stands apart from its neighbors with its “y” shape. It is the only lake in the country that flows both north and south.

Local History from the Ice Age to Modern Age
FORMING THE FINGER LAKES
According to a Native American legend, the Great Spirit created the Finger Lakes when he laid his hand down to bless the land. The imprints of his fingers filled with water, forming the lakes.
Geologists report that the lakes were developed two million years ago when glaciers buried valleys under ice. When the glaciers retreated about 10,000 years ago, the melted ice pooled to create the 11 lakes. The glaciers also left behind large gravel deposits – called moraines –at the southern ends of the lakes, which
Let’s Go Have Fun:
May
were formed by the advancing glacier. Teardrop-shaped hills of glacial sediment – called drumlins – formed south and northeast of Ithaca and at the northern ends of Cayuga and Seneca lakes.
The sloping hills of the lake valleys have soil that is comprised of fractured shale and limestone. This helps overlying soils keep welldrained and allows plant roots to penetrate deep into the ground. The area’s topography provides microclimates with temperatures and humidities appropriate for growing crops, with the lakes tempering winter temperatures and moderating the transitions of spring and fall. It’s no wonder the region eventually became known for its agriculture and vineyards.

FIRST SETTLERS
Iroquois tribes including the Seneca, Cayuga, Tuscarora, Onandaga and Oneida nations were the first residents of the Finger Lakes Region. French missionaries arrived in Ontario County as early as the 1660s. During the American Revolution, Seneca warriors and British loyalists used Canandaigua as a staging area for frontier raids. General John Sullivan, who served under George Washington, retaliated; in later years, his troops lived in the region.
More settlers came to Canandaigua in 1789. It officially became a town in 1791 and the city was incorporated in 1913. In 1794, settlers and the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy signed the Treaty of Canandaigua. The treaty established clearer land boundaries and more peaceful relations between the two groups.
NOTEWORTHY RESIDENTS AND VISITORS
Famous individuals who hail from the area include abolitionist and suffragist Caroline Severance (1820), writer and activist Max Eastman (1883) and actress and comedian Kristen Wiig (1973). One of the most notable individuals from the region is Arthur Dove, who is considered to be America’s first abstract painter. Born in Canandaigua, Dove spent his early years in Geneva and attended Hobart College. The Dove Block Project, a community-based cultural center in Geneva, is named after him.
The region has welcomed several celebrities through the years. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and George W. Bush gave speeches in Canandaigua. Humphrey Bogart spent childhood summers in a cottage near Seneca Point. Elvis Presley and Bette Davis’ daughter are rumored to have visited Clifton Springs for the benefits of its mineral springs.

Where Work and Play Meet
The area has much to offer today, from tourism and unique attractions to a strong retail and business industry. In 1945, Canandaigua native Marvin Sands founded the Canandaigua Wine Company. It grew rapidly and eventually became Constellation Brands, a leading international producer and marketer of beer, wine and spirits.
Sands also helped found the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) in 1983. The venue, located on the campus of Finger Lakes Community College, has welcomed dozens of first-class performers.
The downtowns of Canandaigua and Geneva boast a variety of independently-owned stores and restaurants. Visitors and residents alike can congregate at cafes, explore art galleries and shop for jewelry, gifts and home goods. More commercial stores can be found in Eastview Mall in Victor.

Several centuries-old structures still stand today, including the following:
Granger Homestead (1816) – This Federal-style mansion was the home for Gideon Granger, the country’s first and longest-serving Postmaster General.
Wood Library (1845) – Originally the residence of Mark Sibley, the house became a public library in 1973. Its design is in the Greek revival style.
Ontario County Courthouse (1858) – Susan B. Anthony was tried here in 1873 for voting in the 1872 presidential elections in Rochester.
Sonnenberg Mansion (1887) – The mansion and its surrounding gardens are one of the country’s most extensively preserved estates from the Victorian era.
Belhurst Castle (1889) – Fifty men worked for four years to construct the castle using materials from Geneva and Europe. It served as a speakeasy and gambling casino in the 1930s. Today it houses a restaurant, winery and 11 guestrooms.
Smith Opera House (1894) – The venue, restored in 1990, seats 940 on the main floor and 450 in the balcony. It has hosted famous entertainers including Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.

Place your rear firmly against the seatback. An upright sitting position will provide more stability.
When holding the paddle, make sure the scooped sides of the paddle blades are facing you.
Keep your grip relaxed. Gripping unnecessarily tires your hands quicker.
OUT ON THE WATER
Use the buddy system. If there’s no guide, go with another paddler.
Pick a small, calm body of water with little to no powerboat traffic.
If there’s a breeze, start by paddling into the wind. On your way back, you’ll have a tailwind working with you.
To avoid fatigue, keep your outing at under two hours.

Launch from a sandy, shallow beach. Check to see the temperature of the water, because you may end up swimming.
OUT ON THE WATER
Start on your knees to keep your center of balance low. With a little confidence, you can stand up.
Keep a wide stance in the center of the board. Knees should be loose, not locked.
If you fall, try to fall away from the board and keep a hold on the paddle so it doesn’t float away.

How to Enjoy a Celestial Night at CMAC
TICKETS
For those looking for high quality sound, right in the center of the shell provides the best acoustics. For some shows, CMAC offers a general admission pit right in front of the stage for guests who want to get a close-up view of the artist.
Guests who want to spread out a little and save on expenses may do well with lawn tickets. With lawn seats, patrons bring their own blanket or lawn chair, choose their own spot and catch the sunset. Chairs are available for rent for $5 through CMAC’s Chairs for Charity.
Some performers might make a surprise appearance on the B Stage, located between the lawn and the back of the reserved seating area. “It’s a cool way to get super close,” said Marketing and PR Director Jordynn Gould. “You’re closer to the artist on that stage than you are in the front row.”

The Finger Lakes Choice For
Wildlife Watch
Animals great and small make the Finger Lakes their home. Cummings Nature Center is one of the best places to spot a few furry friends. If you watch carefully, you might just see a few as you tour the area.
BALD EAGLE
These raptors tend to reside in areas with few people and near open water where they can fish. Nests have been reported across the Finger Lakes in recent years. One of the best places to spot a bald eagle is Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls.
BEAVER
Beavers are the largest rodent in North America and are New York’s official state mammal. They divide their time between water and land, building their lodges and dams for extra security. This region’s multiple waterways and thick woods offer plenty of potential locations for beavers’ domains.
BLACK BEAR
Female black bears can roam in a 10-square-mile territory while males’ domains can stretch to 100 miles. Bears are most common in the southwestern Finger Lakes. If you encounter a black bear, remain calm and move away slowly. Pro tip: be sure to carry bear spray.
24 ONChamber.com
FOX
Red foxes prefer forests while gray foxes inhabit open fields. The best time to catch a glimpse is in late spring when kits are playing outside. Gray foxes have “salt and pepper” fur with streaks of red. Red foxes are easily identified by their red-brown coat, black legs and white-tipped tail.
GREAT BLUE HERON
Herons are a common sight along the shorelines in the warmer months. Herons can be identified by their spindly legs, long necks and curvy plumage. While in flight, their wingspan stretches to six feet while its neck retains its distinctive S-shape.
RACCOON
These scavengers live up to the nickname of “trash panda.” Raccoons make a meal from trash bins, bird feeders, cornfields and vineyards. In the woods, they will feast on crayfish, eggs, mice and more. Raccoons are nocturnal and can be fierce when confronted, so be cautious if you encounter nature’s bandits in-person.

Steak Tips
John Palmeri, a chef at Nolan’s in Canandaigua, offers advice on how to prepare, cook and serve the best steak at home.
CUTS TO CONSIDER
Tenderloin – the most tender, lacks some of the beef flavor of more marbled cuts
Sirloin – similar to tenderloin in flavor, but is less tender
Strip and ribeye – middle of the road for tenderness, have a big beefy flavor
Flank – takes well to marinades; be sure to slice thinly across the grain to avoid chewiness
BEST METHODS
Pan sear on the stove – cook on high to get a good crust
Cook on the grill – use hard lump charcoal, which is easy to light, heats evenly and provides some smokey flavor
PREP WORK
Make sure the pan or grill is ripping hot and the steaks are well-seasoned. Always flavor the steak before cooking. Salt and pepper are a must. Additional seasonings to taste. (Since nearly every culture eats steak of some kind, there is a whole world of flavors to explore.)

GETTING THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE
Medium to medium rare is the sweet spot, as the meat is still juicy and tender. However, there’s nothing wrong with having steaks well done, if you prefer it thoroughly cooked.
If you don’t have a meat thermometer, poke at the meat to test its consistency.
For reference, touch your thumb to pointer finger and poke the muscle at the base of your thumb, which has about the same consistency of rare steak. Thumb to middle finger is medium rare. Thumb to ring finger is medium, medium well. Thumb to pinky is well done. This method does take some practice, as every steak cooks a little differently.
KEEP IT JUICY
Let the steak rest 10 to 15 minutes after it comes off the grill or stove. Tent with foil to retain heat. By letting the steak rest, the meat will have time for the muscle fibers to relax a bit. This increases tenderness and helps distribute internal juices throughout the steak.
SAVORY SIDES
Sautéed mushrooms, crispy fried onion straws, blue cheese mashed potatoes and steak frites (French fries) are classic accoutrements.

Go Chasing Waterfalls
The Finger Lakes are not the only noteworthy bodies of water in the area. The summer months are the perfect time to explore the rivers and streams – maybe even visit a waterfall or two.
BARNES CREEK FALLS
These 35-foot-high falls are inside Onanda Park in Canandaigua, about 8 miles south of town. To view the waterfall, winding trails lead to an observation platform. Admission to the upland section of the park is free; the lakeside segment is $5 to $7/vehicle. The park is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. yearround. An easy to moderate hike.
CONKLIN GULLY
Located 2-1/2 miles northeast of Naples, Conklin Gully can be accessed off of Route 245. There are five large waterfalls, the largest being Angel Falls which is 120 feet tall. The best time to view the falls is after a good rain. A moderate to strenuous hike.
GRIMES GLEN
Visitors to the glen may want get their feet wet as this is a popular creek walk route, accessible by Grimes Glen County Park. A footbridge spans a few small cascades with the main 60-foot waterfall located a little over half-a-mile from the parking lot. A moderate to strenuous hike.
HONEOYE FALLS
The 30-foot upper falls can be viewed from the East Street bridge and a viewing platform at the southwest corner of the Mendon Town Hall, both in the center of the village of Honeoye Falls. A view of the lower falls is accessible via Zebulon Norton Trail in Harry Allen Park, less than a quarter mile north from the main falls. A very easy hike.
ITHACA FALLS
Standing tall at 150 feet, this waterfall is visible from the Lake Street bridge in Ithaca. Those who want a closer view can walk a short trail to the falls’ base. The gorge offers stunning views, especially in the autumn months. An easy hike.
ROBERT H. TREMAN STATE PARK
Hikers and nature lovers will enjoy 12 waterfalls along the park’s nine miles of trails. The Lower/Enfield Falls empties into a basin that doubles as a seasonal swimming hole. Further up is the 115-foot Lucifer Falls which offers stunning views of Enfield Glen. Admission is free, but there’s a $7/vehicle parking fee. An easy to strenuous hike, depending how far you go.
