Await on the West Coast

fair play

Afew weeks ago, I opened my mailbox to find a surprise waiting inside. Among the bills and assorted junk mail was a holiday toy catalog. A mix of emotions stirred up inside me.

The first was hesitation and concern. To my knowledge, I had never bought a toy or game from this retail chain, though I have occasionally perused its toy aisles. (I have a pretty strong sense of self-control; I tend to shop, not buy.) How did the marketing department know that my inner child wanted to be let out and indulged?

Diametrically opposite of that, I felt a strong sense of joy and nostalgia. I recalled my childhood in the 1990s and early 2000s when I would try to be the first to the mailbox and search for the handful of toy catalogs. If one happened to be tucked in that day’s mail, I would eagerly flip through its pages and point out items to my parents as gift ideas. I would get the same thrill with the regular school book sales as I circled chapter books and the occasional picture book to add to my reading list.

As the year draws to a close, it’s time for edplay’s Annual Buyer’s Guide. Think of it as a reference point that you can use throughout the year as you research manufacturing companies and what products are on the market.

Our guide not only has a directory of toy suppliers, but quite a few articles for your entertainment. Get a sneak peak of next year’s ToyFest, learn about Joanne Ioana Slaniceanu’s journey in the specialty toy market, meet Megan Wyatt of California toy shop Wit & Whimsy Toys and more.

I hope it may bring you as much information, if not joy, as a toy catalog.

As for me, I intend to keep that toy catalog on my kitchen table…for strictly “research purposes,” of course.

Happy reading!

The expo hall and showrooms will be open all three days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. More than 500 exhibitors are expected to showcase their products, according to show officials. WTHRA will host its Hall of Fame Gala Reception at 7 p.m. on February 20 in the Lily Ballroom. Always a popular event, the gala will feature a dinner, cocktails and induction ceremony for the WTHRA Hall of Fame. Attendance will be capped at 550 people.

Across the three days of the show, buyers are invited to identify noteworthy products and receive three raffle tickets in return. A list of remarkable items will be compiled, with the winners announced at 8:30 a.m. February 21. Past categories have included arts and crafts, building and construction, dolls/action figures, novelty and science/STEM/STEAM, among others.

Wit & Whimsy Toys

Welcomes Kids of All Ages

Toy stores have always been places of wonder and fun for Megan Wyatt. As the proud co-owner of Wit & Whimsy Toys in Granite Bay, California with her husband Joe Wyatt, she seeks to instill that same sense of excitement and amazement in her employees and customers.

Megan’s first job was working at a toy store when she was 16 years old. She continued her career in retail, all the while harboring the dream of operating her own store. Four years ago, she got her chance.

“I just love selling toys,” Megan said. “I love the customer service aspect of retail, making connections with people and helping people find something that maybe they didn’t know they needed. It’s that look on their face when you show them the right item that they were looking for.”

In the summer of 2020, Megan, who had become unemployed at the start of the pandemic, was helping a friend relocate their gift shop into a strip mall in Granite Bay. The

Wit & Whimsy Toys

friend noted a vacant area next door and suggested that a toy store would be a great fit. Megan talked it over with Joe, and three months later, the couple opened Wit & Whimsy Toys in November. “So many things lined up for us that we were like, ‘We got to give this a shot!’” Megan recalled.

More room for play

Megan was quick to learn how to navigate the ups and downs of her own toy store. She dispelled her assumption that she needed business knowledge to successfully operate be a retailer, learning lessons as she went. While her initial inventory was limited, she listened to customers and did her best to appeal to what they were looking for. The ongoing pandemic posed additional challenges such as mask mandates and social distancing; Megan and Joe navigated the situation by being flexible and adapting as things came up.

“It’s ok if you don’t know everything,” Megan said. “Learning is part of the journey.”

Another challenge soon presented itself: a lack of space. The 900-square-foot store, which had been just the right size four years previously, had become confining. Megan wanted to expand the store’s inventory and host more in-person events.

In mid-August of this year, Wit & Whimsy Toys moved across the complex to a 2,700-square-foot space. The new location draws in more foot traffic and feels less crowded. As a result, customers are spending more time in the store and noticing products that they had previously passed by in the old store. Sales have bumped up since the move, giving Megan hope that this is a new normal.

“I’m cautiously optimistic about the holiday season this year because we have more inventory, we have more space and new people are finding us,” Megan said.

Fun in flux

The store’s final layout is yet to be determined, as Megan and Joe are still experimenting with the store’s flow. However, they have settled on breaking out the store by section, with areas for puzzles, science-themed activities, art and baby products.

There are 5,500 SKUs in stock, and inventory is conducted manually after the holidays. The store carries a couple hundred brands, including MagnaTiles, Epoch Everlasting Play, Eurographics and Squishables.

A majority of Wit & Whimsy Toys’ inventory comes from manufacturers that Megan and Joe meet at trade shows, including Astra Marketplace & Academy and ToyFest. Megan highly encourages her fellow retailers to attend trade shows where they can establish relationships. “Sometimes you feel like an island, running your store and focusing on your store,” she stated. “Then I get to go to the shows and talk with other toy store owners. We get ideas from each other; I hear what’s going on in their toy store and get to feel that camaraderie. If there are other toy store owners who don’t get to go to shows that much, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s made such a difference for me.”

Wit & Whimsy hosts regular Grown-Up Game Nights at a local brewery.

Wit & Whimsy Toys

Wit & Whimsy Toys also carries lesser-known products that Megan finds on Instagram. One example is Rainbow Unicorn Rescue, which is among the store’s top five bestselling games. “I love finding little things like that,” Megan said. “You’re not going to find them in a lot of places, so they feel special.”

Current top sellers are bead kits, slime, sensory toys like NeeDoh Nice Cube, games – especially Taco Goat Cheese Pizza – and Jellycat plush. Popular trends that Megan has seen among customers are blind boxes, axolotls, capybaras and Calico Critters.

“I feel strongly about toys and the power of play,” Megan stated. “I enjoy being able to bring in toys that I play with myself. If I don’t love it or don’t see the value of it, I don’t bring it in. Then I can relay it to customers.”

Creating a culture of fun

There is much that Megan enjoys about working at Wit & Whimsy Toys. The connections with customers are the most important aspect. Megan appreciates the relationships she and Joe are building between themselves, customers and the community.

Of the five part-time employees that work at the store, three started out as customers. Whenever a young patron expresses how much they enjoy coming to the store, Megan hints that they should consider working at the store when they come of age.

“I had such a great experience when I was 16 working at a toy store. It’s really important to me to build that same culture as the owner. We all vibe together and mesh together,” Megan shared, adding that the store is a first-time job for

a couple employees. “I really want to give them the same experience I had.”

Providing a quality in-store experience is a high priority for Megan, and the new location offers more space for on-site events. In the past, Wit & Whimsy Toys hosted Grown-Up Game Night at a nearby brewery (which is now conveniently located next door). On the last Thursday of the month, guests come to play two to three games and have a chance to win a game at the end of the night. Everyone receives a 10 percent discount on their next game purchase in the store.

The event turned out to be a great way to introduce patrons to new games and “sparked local trends in game buying” based on the products featured. “We started getting adult customers who liked playing games on an adult level with other people, but didn’t have the community for that,” Megan said. “We thought we’d give it a try and see what happened. After the first one, we got such a positive response.” Grown-Up Game Nights will continue alongside new in-store activities including story time, craft activity days, birthday parties and more.

Wit & Whimsy Toys is also active in the community. It has sponsored local sports teams and donated gift baskets for fundraisers for organizations and schools. One noteworthy partnership is with My Mother’s Voice, a nonprofit that supplies books to Title 1 schools. Wit & Whimsy Toys works closely with the nonprofit to host a Giving Tree around the holidays and book drives that benefit families.

“It’s really important to me that the store is not just a store to people,” Megan said. “I’ve always wanted it to be part of the community. It’s such a great way for people to come in and engage with us and each other.”

How have you seen MEAVIA products help kids who are on the autistic spectrum?

I receive amazing feedback from customers including parents, teachers and therapists. Just recently a mom shared that her non-verbal daughter used our Line and Learn Cars to verbalize colors for the first time. It meant the world to her, and that’s exactly what MEAVIA aims to achieve. It’s the best feeling in the world when that happens!

What is your newest product, and how often do you release new items?

We’re launching CuddleBug, a giant sensory caterpillar plush, later this year. It’s our first toy to

incorporate vibration, a sensation lots of kids with sensory needs love. It’s 35 inches long, making it big enough to double as a kids’ body pillow. We’re excited to get it to market.

We also have a series of Pete the Cat sensory toys on the way we’re excited about. Overall, we aim to release new products regularly.

MEAVIA offers a

Complicated Relationship

Igrew up in Romania during one of the toughest and most somber communist regimes in Eastern Europe. In this environment, toys weren’t seen as necessities. My family was hard-working but fairly poor, and the greatest gift they gave me was a huge respect for education. Thank you, Mom.

Romania’s strict regime banned goods from “evil” capitalist countries, which meant Western toys were a distant dream. The only toys available were either made in Romania or, if we were lucky, made in China (thank you, “comrades”). Even those were scarce and often lacked the whimsy and innovation that children in other parts of the world enjoyed. My childhood memories aren’t exactly filled

with Toys

with toy-filled wonderlands. Instead, I was the kid whose Christmases and birthdays meant unwrapping a magical stash of Jules Verne books. It’s as if Santa knew I was an introvert who preferred adventures on the page rather than in the yard. (I still am, by the way.)

Fast forward to my late 20s, and my relationship with toys took an unexpected turn. I stumbled upon the world of designer toys – collectible, limited-edition figurines that blurred the lines between art and play. It was like being struck by lightning. Cue the dramatic shift from “Oh, I had a wooden toy once” to “Let me win this eBay bidding war at 3 a.m. for a limited-edition figurine!” My apartment quickly turned into

a quirky museum of vinyl toys, much to the amusement (and occasional horror) of my friends and family. What I lacked in childhood toys, I more than made up for as an adult collector.

At 40, I packed my bags and flew to Los Angeles with a naïve plan to work in the designer toys industry. Spoiler alert: it’s a niche market that doesn’t exactly pay the bills. So, I dropped the “designer” and went with plain old “toys.”

My first real job in the U.S. was at Landis’ Labyrinth, a neighborhood toy store. The biggest challenge? Selling nostalgia toys—those classic playthings everyone else grew up with, but I was seeing for the first time. I felt like an imposter, nodding along to customers’ childhood memories, pretending I, too, had played with those toys.

I had never touched an Etch A Sketch or assembled a LEGO set. Yet, I was now in the business of selling those very items. It wasn’t long before the shiny piles of toy catalogs in the owner’s office caught my eye. I convinced her to trust me with the buying and ordering; it was like unleashing a kid in a candy store, except I was the kid who grew up without candy.

Weekends were always busy and hectic at Landis’ Labyrinth, but Mondays were a different animal – slow days with little traffic and not much to do. During those Mondays, I started writing in my head a story that included

toys from Folkmanis, Plan Toys, Magna-Tiles and other brands I learned to love. The story stayed in my head and never jumped on paper, but nevertheless I enjoyed creating a story bringing together all my favorite, late-in-life discovered toys.

A few years later, I found myself at TPG Creations/ The Pencil Grip, diving into product development and attending trade shows. Even now, I continue to see the toy industry through the eyes of my 5-year-old self, and I believe that’s one of my greatest strengths: the ability to see toys through fresh eyes, as objects of wonder rather than mere consumer goods.

I take my job seriously while strongly believing that my job is to stay playful and curious.

So here I am, sharing this journey with you. If you’ve ever wondered how someone can have a complicated, yet deeply fulfilling relationship with toys, look no further. My story is proof that it’s never too late to rediscover the magic of play. Toys are not just for children. For some of us, they become treasures we find later in life, rekindling a spark of joy that was always there.

Joanne Ioana Slaniceanu is the director of sales and marketing at TPG Creations.

Toys can have positive impacts on a child’s mental health. According to a recent survey, toys can be instrumental to instilling lifetime confidence to form strong relationships and a sense of self.

The survey, released on October 20, was commissioned by Rainbow High – a brand from MGA Entertainment – and conducted by Talker Research. The poll included 2,000 parents of school-aged kids.

Top takeaways include:

• Sixty-three percent believe if their kid plays with toys or dolls early in life, they’ll have an easier time fostering new friendships later.

• Eighty-one percent of parents confirmed that their child appears happier and more social/confident in themselves when they play with their favorite toy or doll.

• Sixty-one percent agreed that their child will feel more confident if they have the opportunity to choose toys based on colors of the rainbow.

• Additionally, 65 percent noted that it’s important for their child to have toys or dolls that are diverse and represent different cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

• Ninety-one percent noted that their kids reenact what they see on TV and/or on YouTube with their toys or dolls, naming problem solving (49 percent), discovering their personal interests (41 percent) and building confidence (40 percent) as the top takeaways they’d like their kids to experience.

Clinical psychologist and Play Therapist Dr. Sheryl Ziegler teamed up with Rainbow High to raise awareness among parents that dolls have a significant impact on selfconfidence and, therefore, a healthy and social childhood.

“I love Rainbow High’s message of colorful, creative confidence,” said Dr. Sheryl Ziegler, a leading

play therapist, author of Mommy Burnout and host of Dr. Sheryl’s PodCouch. “The ability to play with and change colors helps kids navigate their world and sense of self –play is a child’s natural language, and toys like dolls are their words. The more parents can understand this language, the better they can help their kids discover their self-identity, improve their relationships and engage in more meaningful communication with family and friends.”

“Fantasma has forecasted that it’s going to be the biggest boost in science set appeal since the days when Star Wars revolutionized science toys,” Dreyer stated.

Fantasma Toys also offers a selection of slime under the Concoction Factory brand that is stretchy, but not sticky. Popular slime products include Pizza Party Slime, Sweet Treats and BubbleGum Blast Slime, which are also among Fantasma Toys’ newest offerings. The company’s Marvel license allows for incorporating characters such as Spiderman and Venom with the product. “We take capturing the character’s integrity very seriously,” Dreyer stated.

While some slime products are just the substance, others include collectable charms that are hand-tooled and -painted. “With slime, we recognize that kids are looking for a tactile aspect, scent, unboxing and mystery,” Dreyer said.

The company’s newest venture is puzzles. Dreyer noticed how consumers’ interest in puzzles rose during the pandemic. With puzzle sales dipping in the last couple years, he wanted to reinvent the puzzle experience. Products include the patent-pending Jigpetto puzzles that come with a frame and movable pieces to “bring the puzzles to life.”

“To us, it’s a magic show production. Whenever we produce an item, it’s like putting on a magic show,” Dreyer said. “We consider how retailers can capitalize on our education and how to engage the customer.”

Fantasma Toys has several distinctions under its belt. It received the Toys R Us Vendor of the Year award and is the only manufacturer to be endorsed by the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Nevertheless, Dreyer doesn’t want to lose sight of having fun.

“We like to have fun with our retailers, and we want our retailers to have fun with their customers,” he observed. “There’s a lot of things that people could be selling, but nothing can be more fun than educational toys – if they’re done in the right way.”

Enchanting encounters

Dreyer’s interest in magic began when he was 11 years old. After confiding to his grandfather about classmates cheating him at cards, Dreyer’s grandfather took him to a magic store. Looking back, Dreyer likened the experience to walking into a Disney theme park. Shortly afterward, he began performing magic tricks professionally on TV and around the world.

“I was hooked on the world of magic,” Dreyer said. “Magic builds a child’s self-

confidence and it is proven to improve hand-eye coordination and public speaking.”

Practicing magic opened several doors for Dreyer. It got him into holography, and in his 20s Dreyer got a contract with Disney to make holographic watches for Disney’s Fantasia’s 50th anniversary. Today, it has a pending contract with Disney to produce a magic set for Fantasia’s 85th anniversary.

Magic was a gateway to the specialty toy industry. Dreyer sold his watch company to Foster Grant and founded Fantasma Toys in 2001. “There was a void in the marketplace in the early 2000s for people that understood magic and toys,” Dreyer explained. “By understanding the history of toys, I know what was done in the past that worked and look to what we can do today.”

Fantasma Toys distributes through sales groups including Toyology on the West Coast, Enchanted Moments on the East Coast, TOTALToys in the Midwest and Teri Young in Texas, reaching several thousand independent retailers. The company also exhibits at rep shows, NY Toy Fair, Toylanta and ToyFest.

Dreyer explained he has certain SKUs that are unique to each retail demographic; of its roughly 200 SKUs, at least 150 are available for specialty retailers. However, he and his team will treat an independent toy store the same way they would treat a larger retailer.

When it comes to selling Fantasma Toys, Dreyer encourages retailers to let his company help make experiences at specialty toy stores just as special as his first foray into a magic shop. Fantasma Toys can assist by talking with reps and providing free demos and giveaways for events specific to magic, slime, puzzles and STEM.

“By being a children’s entertainer when I was younger, magic allowed me to think how we can entertain the consumer and how the consumer can entertain their friends and family,” Dreyer stated. “That’s one of the key aspects of Fantasma: having a magical creativity. Having a magic mentality has allowed us to be a significant toy company in the specialty market.”

Let’s Make Some Magic!

Fantasma Toys brings wonder and excitement to learning

MToys. The company’s products – which span from magic sets to science kits and tactile products – are designed to aid children’s cognitive and social development.

Fantasma Toys sets itself apart by its play value, age appropriateness and integrity. One question that is constantly at the back of CWO (Chief Wizard Officer) Roger Dreyer’s mind is how to keep products fresh and different.

“From my magic performance background, how do we provide entertainment, social skills building and critical thinking in a magic set?” Dreyer said. “From a manufacturing point of view, how can we engage the consumer in such a way that it never gets old and they continually grow and share it with others?”

Learning through prestidigitation

Geared for ages 5 and up, some of Fantasma Toys’ offerings are specifically made for different age ranges. “Even if it’s a toy for our youngest magicians, the real magic is that

using it can bring the family together and gets everyone involved,” Dreyer said.

Fantasma Toys began with magic-based toys. One of its most popular products is the Official Magician’s Case; with more than 200 tricks inside, it’s “a magic show wherever you go,” said Dreyer.

The company strives to ensure it provides tricks that are sophisticated, yet easy to perform. “We’re using our magic creativity to engage the consumer, especially the kids – who are really, really smart these days,” he said.

From magic, Dreyer branched into STEM toys, seeking to cover every aspect: science, technology, engineering and math. The team works with scientists from major universities to analyze the toys and kits to make sure scientific definitions are correct. They also regularly consult a child development expert from Columbia and Yale universities to ensure Fantasma Toys’ toys align with kids’ interests and needs.

Currently, the STEM Illusionology Set is a big crowdpleaser. However, Dreyer is looking forward to a pending Disney Sitch Experiment 626 Magic Science kit – Fantasma Toys has licenses with Disney and Marvel, among others.
