Dear Friends,
As we look back on the Total Solar Eclipse of April 8, 2024, we were thrilled to not only have had the opportunity to be in the path of totality but also witness the influx of visitors to our beautiful Ontario County. It’s a testament to the allure of our region and the efforts of our local businesses who made this celestial event a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience for all.
Not long after the sun set on this extraordinary event, we shifted our focus in eager anticipation of the sun-drenched days of summer ahead. Ontario County beckons with its lush hiking trails and breathtaking waterfalls, inviting you to explore the natural wonders that adorn our landscape. And let’s not forget the sparkling waters of the five Finger Lakes located in Ontario County—Canandaigua, Canadice, Honeoye, Hemlock and Seneca—where boating and swimming await to refresh and rejuvenate your spirit.
But the excitement doesn’t end when the sun goes down. Summer nights in Ontario County come alive with the sounds of music, thanks to the stellar lineup of bands and concerts at outdoor venues like Lincoln Hill Farms and CMAC. Whether you’re a music aficionado or simply seeking a lively atmosphere, there’s something for everyone to enjoy under the starlit sky.
As the president of the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce, I am committed to fostering a strong sense of community among our members. That’s why I’m delighted to announce the continuation of events that foster community and business connections, including educational seminars and networking events that connect and empower our local businesses. Additionally, mark your calendars for our annual Golf Tournament on August 13 – an opportunity to mingle, compete, and forge new connections against the backdrop of our scenic surroundings.

“We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry & provide a clear path to solving problems.”
Becoming a dentist isn't easy. It takes years of study, the ability to pass rigorous exams, and a steady hand to match a sharp mind. But for Dr. Gabriela Carranza, becoming a dentist wasn't the end of the road. She continued to study advanced dentistry for an additional eight years, specializing in prosthodontics and implant surgery.
Dr. Carranza's addiction to learning more to better serve her patients fueled her to become a Prosthodontist. Since 2015 she has served as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Rochester's Eastman Institute for Oral Health. In 2018 she became the owner of Victor Prosthodontics. D
If you've never heard of the term 'Prosthodontist' before, not to worry, you aren't alone. The title itself is a mouthful. However, in the world of dentistry, Prosthodontists are dental specialists who have completed at least 3 years of a prosthodontics residency program after completing the initial 4 years of dental school.
Experts at cosmetic and restorative dentistry, they are often referred challenging cases by other dentists and closely collaborate with them. Services Prosthodontists provide include crowns, hybrids, dentures, implants, bridges, veneers and TMJ solutions.
WHAT HAPPENS THE FIRST TIME I SEE A PROSTHODONT I ST?
" At the first visit to Victor Prosthodontics, either Dr. Carranza or Dr. Kahn will begin by completing a full review of your medical and dental history, including evaluating your diagnostic images. They will also spend time with you to understand your treatment goals - learning more about the outcome that you are looking to achieve. This allows the doctors to create a a customized treatment plan according to your needs.
As a patient at Victor Prosthodontics you can take comfort knowing that Dr. Carranza and Dr. Kahn are highly trained specialists who are skilled at treating even the most challenging cases."
HOW IS A PROSTHODONTIST DIFFERENT FROM A GENERAL DENTIST?
"We tend to go beyond the standard 'bread and butter' dentistry. "We treat patients who have genetic disorders, trauma or neglect, and instead of focusing on a single tooth we evaluate the whole mouth – and thus provide solutions to complex problems."
WH O NE EDS A PROSTHODONT I ST?
“In addition to difficult cases we also see patients who ha ven’t had a great dental experience in the past and are in need of a second opinion.
We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry for our patients and provide a clear path to solving their problems."

A healthy and happy community starts with a robust hospital. Thankfully, Canandaigua and the surrounding areas have access to a vast array of medical services provided by UR Medicine Thompson Health.
The hospital’s Constellation Center for Health and Healing, where its Surgical Care Center is located. Left: Two nurses confer at Canandaigua Urgent Care. Thompson Health has two other urgent care locations, in Farmington and Newark.Thompson Health has a long, rich history. Canandaigua benefactress Mary Clark Thompson founded the Frederick Ferris Thompson Memorial Hospital in memory of her husband. The 32-bed hospital opened in 1904 and was originally located on North Main Street in Canandaigua, next to the current Wood Library.
“The facility underwent a number of renovations and expansions,” said Thompson Health President and CEO Michael F. Stapleton Jr. “By 1958, it had grown to 130 beds and its stewards began addressing the need to either expand the existing location or relocate.”
The hospital transferred to its current location on Parrish Street in 1971 as well as established a nursing home next door. Over the next three decades, F.F. Thompson continued to expand its service offerings to the community by providing a senior living community, family practices, urgent care centers, lab draw stations and more.
In 2012, F.F. Thompson and the University of Rochester Medicine Center (URMC) signed an affiliation agreement to share their resources to meet the healthcare needs of the Rochester and Finger Lakes regions. “Since the affiliation, Thompson has continued to flourish,” Stapleton explained.
Growing with the community
Thompson Health oversees five affiliate healthcare organizations across Ontario, Livingston and Wayne counties: F.F. Thompson Hospital, M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, FFTH Properties and Services, F.F. Thompson Foundation and F.F.T. Senior Communities. The healthcare system provides a variety of inpatient and outpatient services.
“Our services combine the most advanced technology delivered with truly exceptional care,” Stapleton stated.
Thompson Health has continued to grow in recent years. In March 2020, F.F. Thompson opened a 12-bed ICU –replacing a seven-bed ICU – and welcomed more critical care experts to its team. The expansion allowed the hospital to be a part of the URMC Transfer Center and accept patients from regional hospitals.
That May, Thompson Health opened its third urgent care site at 699 South Main Street in Canandaigua. The health system’s other urgent care sites are in Farmington and Newark. Thompson also expanded its interventional radiology suite and opened the Marilyn Sands Outpatient Clinic at the hospital.
Last year was another big year for the hospital. F.F. Thompson’s Rehabilitation Services Department relocated
its outpatient services to 699 South Main Street. Thompson Health opened the new Farmington Medical Group on Route 332 – offering both primary care and OB/GYN services – and the Mary Clark Thompson Family Practice at Canandaigua’s new Sands Family YMCA. Finally, another primary care office, Canandaigua Medical Group (CMG) Internal Medicine at 1160 Corporate Drive in Farmington, opened.
“This brought the number of primary care practices to 15, spread out over a three-county area,” Stapleton said.
More plans are in store for Thompson Health. It is preparing to open a second retail pharmacy location in Victor this year. By November, all of its hospital-affiliated primary care practices will have integrated their patient healthcare record system and converted to Epic (MyChart), which is used by the rest of Thompson as well as other URMC systems.
“With Epic, our primary care providers will have easier access to a more complete patient record and the vital information they need to take the best possible care of (article continued on page 16; see information on Finger Lakes Community College’s nursing program on page 14)
Due to a persistent shortage of nurses in the Finger Lakes and around the country, UR Medicine Thompson Health has partnered with Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) to offer a new scholarship program.
The scholarship, awarded to second-year nursing students, covers a full year of tuition in exchange for an agreement to work at Thompson Health. To attain a scholarship, students must complete a competitive application process and interview with Thompson’s nursing leadership. Those chosen must agree to work for at Thompson for two years upon graduating and passing the National Council Licensure Examination. Up to 10 scholarships are available each year.
“We are excited that some of the financial burden will be lifted from students and that they will know where they are going to work when their education is complete,” stated Lenore Friend, director of public relations and communications at FLCC.
The first recipient of the scholarship is Nichelle Camp of Newark, who graduated in May.
“I have completed two clinical rotations at Thompson and fell in love with the facility as a student,” Camp said. “I am grateful for the foundation FLCC has given me, and I am looking forward to the opportunity that is ahead as I start my job in Thompson’s postanesthesia care unit this summer.”
The FLCC registered nursing (RN) program began in 1968, when the college was founded. It will launch a licensed practical nursing (LPN) program this fall. FLCC provides a “ladder” for students interested in healthcare but who are unsure about the RN program; students can start with the LPN program, obtain work experience and return to take the college’s accelerated LPN to RN program.
“This will help students interested in the rewarding, yet demanding field of nursing launch their careers in a manageable way,” Friend said.
Several of our primary care locations – family medicine, OB/GYN and pediatrics – are accepting new patients. Please visit ThompsonHealth.com/FindaDoctor for a list.

patients in the practices,” Stapleton said. “Meanwhile, our primary care patients will be able to access their own more comprehensive healthcare picture from a single, robust, interactive platform, allowing them to self-advocate and better participate in their care.”
Today, Thompson Health employs more than 2,000 area residents, making it the largest employer in Ontario County. Its employees, which are called “associates,” report that, despite the medical center’s size, it maintains a “close-knit atmosphere,” according to Stapleton.
“Within our corporate culture, we recognize each person’s contributions, appreciating the unique skills and perspectives they bring to the table,” he stated.
Thompson Health actively encourages new healthcare professionals to join its team, and supports current associates through programs and funding.
Its Healthcare Education Fund, established in 2020, allows entry-level associates to pursue higher education and achieve career goals. The F.F. Thompson Foundation held two events in 2023 – a golf tournament and gala – that raised nearly $250,000 for the fund.
“Thanks to stipends, these entry-level associates don’t
have to worry about finances while scaling back hours to focus on their studies,” Stapleton said. “In turn, their enhanced knowledge and skills directly benefit our patients and longterm care residents.”
In August 2022, F.F. Thompson began welcoming internal medicine residents and medical students from the University of Rochester Medical Center to make rounds on a medical-surgical floor. In addition, Thompson Health hosts students from Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES and a number of area colleges.
This year, Thompson Health has partnered with Finger Lakes Community College to provide a scholarship program that benefits second-year nursing students (see sidebar on page 14).
In addition to medical procedures, Thompson Health invests in the community’s wellbeing through education and philanthropy.
The healthcare system provides more than $7 million each year in courtesy and uncompensated care. According to the Healthcare Association of New York State, Thompson also generates $49 million in tax dollars and $9.8 million in community benefits and investments each year.
Thompson Health holds several community educational events and screenings to help residents be proactive about their health. Wellness coordinators visit schools to give talks on topics including social emotional learning, healthy eating, positive body image and vaping prevention.
As a balanced diet is crucial to one’s wellbeing, Thompson Health, UR Medicine’s Health Equity Program Support Office, Foodlink and the Rural Health Network launched a food pantry this April.
“Through this pantry, we will be sending home a small supply of food with inpatients whose pre-discharge screening indicates they are experiencing food insecurity at home,” Stapleton said. “These bags will also include a folder with information about area food pantries, simple recipe ideas and more.”
As a result of its efforts and impact on the community, Thompson Health received the Nonprofit of the Year Award from the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce in February.
“Our nonprofit health system has deep roots in our community and a deep appreciation for the many ways in which local residents rely on us,” Stapleton observed. “In turn, these community members are incredibly supportive, for which we are incredibly grateful.”

With nearly 200 people in attendance, the Chamber focused on celebrating the past and looking toward the future.
While mingling, guests enjoyed free sparkling wine, generously donated by The Lake House. With their meal, all guests were able to sip Heron Hill’s Eclipse wine, with bottles of Eclipse White and Eclipse Red on each table next to an arrangement of white and green hydrangeas.
The evening included a cocktail hour – with the Golden Glove signature cocktail (a nod to Leap Day), a buffet meal, music by Leo Medler and dozens of silent auction packages. Those in attendance also grabbed props and shared their biggest smiles at the Hype Booth photo booth.
Presented by Lyons National Bank, this year’s event was the first Annual Dinner since the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the biggest changes was the combining of the Annual Dinner with the Business Inspiration Awards. This allowed the Chamber to shine the light on all the year’s award winners –Businesses of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement honoree – during the same evening.
Sponsored by Canandaigua National Bank & Trust, Constellation Brands, F.G. Rayburn Mason Contractors, Inc. & MMB + CO, the awards were presented to Finger Lakes Animal Hospital, Ashton Place Senior Living, UR Medicine Thompson Health and Daniel Fuller, owner of Bristol Mountain and Roseland Waterpark.

Dr. Denise Kurtz, chief of staff, accepted the Business of the Year (with fewer than 25 employees) Award on behalf of Finger Lakes Animal Hospital.
Opened in 1952 by Dr. Saunders, Finger Lakes Animal Hospital has been an integral part of the Finger Lakes community for more than 70 years. It was among the few animal hospitals that were able to stay open and support their patients throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
The animal hospital supports the community in myriad ways. Kurtz and Hospital Manager Brittany Kommer have donated to local high schools’ sports programs on behalf of Finger Lakes Animal Hospital. They also work with local shelters to help with the cost on spay/neutering and free shelter exams to promote adoption. Finger Lakes Animal Hospital staff are approachable and compassionate while supporting animal health and wellness in Ontario County.
Executive Director Kevin Christiano accepted the Business of the Year (with more than 25 employees) Award on behalf of Ashton Place Senior Living.
Opened in November 1998, Ashton Place is celebrating its 25th year of service to Ontario County seniors. Ashton Place is family-owned and -operated; the compassion and
dedication to families and the community shows.
Christiano is the third generation in his family to work in senior living/nursing home care.
In 2021, Christiano was awarded Administrator of the Year from New York State Centers for Assisted Living. That award recognized his leadership during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. A testament to his leadership and the staff’s diligence and commitment to keeping residents safe and healthy, Ashton Place went 663 days from the start of the shutdown without a single resident case of COVID-19. Not only is Ashton Place a wonderful place to live, it’s also a great place to work – several of its 50 employees have more than 10 years of service to the company.
President and CEO Michael F. Stapleton Jr. accepted the Nonprofit of the Year Award for UR Medicine Thompson Health.
Thompson has been a fixture in the region for 120 years. Day after day, its associates dutifully render care and compassion as they serve an estimated 215,000 Finger Lakes residents. This includes everything from welcoming newborns in the hospital’s Birthing Center, to tending

to elders via a senior living continuum encompassing a retirement community, assisted living and a 178-bed nursing home. In addition to providing more than $7 million annually in courtesy and uncompensated care, the health system hosts support groups and community educational events.
UR Medicine Thompson Health also hits the road and engages in prevention work right in the heart of the community as their wellness coordinators go into schools to assist with social/emotional learning, healthy eating, positive body image, vaping prevention and more.
Thompson funds scholarships for its associates, supporting career growth and in some cases lifting people out of poverty. With 2,050 associates, Thompson is an economic engine and Ontario County’s largest employer. According to the Healthcare Association of New York State, it generates $49 million in tax dollars and $9.8 million in community benefits and investments each year.
The final award of the evening was the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.
Since 1960, the Chamber has recognized 63 individuals for their selfless investments in their community through
volunteerism, mentoring, role modeling and problem solving for no other reason than they thought it was the right thing to do.
In her introduction of Daniel Fuller as this year’s recipient, 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Laurie O’Shaughnessy noted that the award recognizes Fuller’s tremendous contributions to Ontario County both as an employer and community advocate.
Fuller has served as the vice chair of Canandaigua National Bank and Trust and a board member for the Tourism Advisory Council for New York State and the National Ski Areas Association. He is the past chair of the board of Thompson Health and the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce, past president for the Ski Areas of New York and a past board member of the Canandaigua Country Club.
In 2011, Fuller received the Sherman Adams Award, an award presented annually by the National Ski Areas Association to an individual from an Eastern Ski area that has significantly influenced the industry. Last year, the Rochester Business Journal awarded him the Icon Award.
“In 1984, [Fuller] purchased Bristol Mountain and has grown the mountain substantially over the years with the addition of new trails and lifts that doubled the mountain’s capacity, increasing visitation to not only Bristol Mountain but our Finger Lakes Region,” O’Shaughnessy said. “And
why have all the fun only in winter? Twenty years ago, Dan acquired Roseland Water Park making it a substantial asset to the community, drawing families, camps and others to the park while also employing local youth.
“As president and general manager of multiple businesses with more than 450 employees and 150 volunteers, there is no shortage of things to do,”
O’Shaughnessy added. “From snowmaking to workforce development to advocating for our region as an East Coast destination, Dan works tirelessly for the best of our region, visitors and locals alike. As we celebrate all Dan Fuller has accomplished, the fact that he is exceptionally kind and humble makes it even more meaningful and inspiring.”
Michelle Pedzich, 2022-2023 past board chair, presented the Year in Review. She spoke of key accomplishments, including welcoming 53 new Chamber members; connecting members and supporters at the annual golf tournament, monthly mixers and Chamber programming; and recognizing 11 honorees and two recipients of the Ontario County ATHENA Award. Pedzich welcomed Tracey Dello Stritto as president and CEO of the Chamber. Another major board highlight was the decision to maintain the Chamber’s
(continued on page 26)
downtown Canandaigua location, allowing the Chamber to be a site of community engagement and visitor interaction.
“It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve as the board chair,” Pedzich said. “We experienced an extraordinary amount of change in a short amount of time, on the tail end of the pandemic. All the work has truly been a team effort, led by our Board of Directors, our staff and our key community partners.”
Chamber University educational events, Morning Mixers, Speed Networking, the return of our annual Legislative Breakfast and roundtable discussions specific to an industry or group such as women-owned businesses and manufacturing.
Following Pedzich’s comments, current board chair Kari Buch, regional director with the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes, spoke about the primary focus areas for 2024: “organizational development, delivering outstanding value to our members and fostering regional growth.”
“At the Chamber, we have heard loud and clear that our members find value in networking events and businessto-business interactions,” Buch said. “In response to that request, we are excited to be adding more ribbon cuttings that celebrate milestones among our local businesses,
“To broaden the digital marketing reach of our members, we are highlighting and celebrating your businesses through our Member Milestone Mondays and Chamber ON the Road segments throughout our social media channels,” she added.
“In addition to networking and educational opportunities, the Chamber will also focus on regional and economic growth in collaboration with our regional partners, local municipalities and educational institutions to become a resource for tourism and workforce development,” Buch said.
Overall, the evening provided guests with an opportunity to contemplate the past while embracing hope and inspiration for the future of our businesses and community.

History and horticulture combine at Sonnenberg
One historical site has plenty in store for gardeners and those who enjoy antiquities – Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park in
Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansionand marketing director at Sonnenberg.
“Sonnenberg offers one of the few remaining estates in the U.S. with a Tudorstyle mansion and nine formal gardens.”
The 54-acre property was once the summer home of Frederick Ferris Thompson and Mary Clark Thompson. Frederick was a New York City banker. Mary, who was born in Naples, was the daughter of New York State Governor Myron Holley Clark.
The couple built their 40-room Queen-Anne style mansion between 1885 and 1887. While the Thompsons lived at the mansion for one generation, their abode was used for housing for the veterans’ hospital from 1941 to 1972. The following year, the estate opened to the public.
“We are solely funded and operated by a community nonprofit,” Knight said.
Guests can walk through 14 of the original family’s rooms in the mansion, as well as visit a greenhouse, cafe, gift shop and wine cellar. A complete phone-guided walk is also available.
The grounds are home to 17 other structures and nine formal gardens, which draw visitors from near and far. The gardens are designed to represent various cultures and historic periods, ranging from fourth century Rome and 12th century Asia to the French Renaissance. The Old-Fashioned Garden contains 110 perennial plants while the Rose Garden is home to about 30 species of roses and the 20-acre arboretum is home to 140 varieties of trees.
“Much of the signature floral design and landscaping seen today at our nine formal gardens bears the imprint of philanthropist Mary Clark Thompson, who brought home ideas and art from her many trips to European and Asian locales,” Knight stated.
Sonnenberg hosts about 15 public events throughout the year. Select proceedings include a Father’s Day car show, moonlight strolls each Friday in August and a mystery theater in October. Its most popular event is its annual fundraiser, Arts at the Gardens, which features dozens of artist vendors, live entertainment, food and wine from Ontario County and the surrounding region.
As Sonnenberg celebrates its 51st anniversary, the staff plans to continue restoring the gardens and historic structures. “We hope that the gardens will be here for many years to come,” Knight stated.
Sonnenberg is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday to Sunday, May 2 through October 31. To learn more, visit sonnenberg.org.
With 11 Finger Lakes across the region – including five in Ontario County (Canandaigua, Canadice, Hemlock, Honeoye and Seneca) – long have residents flocked to the water for both commerce and recreation. The Finger Lakes Boating Museum in Hammondsport is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the significance of this rich history.
A group of dedicated antique boating enthusiasts founded the museum in 1996. “We were concerned that with the shuttering of regional
(continued on page 30)
boat works companies and dwindling number of the boats they built, we would lose the chance to share this story,” said Ed Wightman, a museum founder and volunteer chief curator and boatwright.
The Finger Lakes Boating Museum moved to its current location in 2014 – the campus of the former headquarters of the Taylor Wine Company at the southern end of Keuka Lake. The 14 acres and 20 buildings provide an ideal place to display the museum’s collection, operate restoration shops and offer education programs - with plenty of room to expand.
Museum guests will find more than 120 boats on display throughout six large exhibit halls, including boats from Ontario County builders Fay & Bowen, Springstead and Mitchell. Exhibits cover boating eras that span more than 100 years – from steamboats and canoes, to trout boats and speedboats, to luxury launches and classic runabouts.
The museum also features thousands of related artifacts and artwork and even a replica cottage and bait shop. “Museum founders remind me that we are a ‘boating’
museum for a reason,” said Executive Director Kara Calder “More than just boats, boating is about the people who build, restore, sail and enjoy being around boats on the amazing Finger Lakes.”
Getting out on the water is easy with the museum’s cruises on Keuka Lake aboard The Pat II tour boat. Built in 1924, the Pat II served as a tour boat on the St. Lawrence River and then as a mail and tour boat on Skaneateles as part of the Midlakes Navigation fleet until 1991. The Finger Lakes Boating Museum brought the boat to Hammondsport for restoration in 2014. After more than 8,000 volunteer hours and six years, The Pat II began operating once more in 2021.
“The Pat II serves as the museum’s on-water ambassador for boating preservation and education,” Calder said.
Tours are available daily from Memorial Day weekend through October and launch from Depot Park in Hammondsport. Experienced captains provide historical talks and identify points of interest. Private charters are also available.
The museum’s Boating Academy holds dozens of
workshops through the year, touching on boat building, canoe canvassing, motor restoration and certified boating safety classes.
The museum also hosts a Dragonboat Club called the Keuka Dragons that provides on-water demonstrations and competes in Ontario County, across the Finger Lakes Region and beyond.
“The Finger Lakes Boating Museum truly has something for everyone from fine boats to fine art, immersive displays and hands-on activities for kids of all ages, and experiences that will spark memories and inspire new ones,” Calder said.
The Finger Lakes Boating Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; it closes at 4 p.m. January through March. The museum is closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. To learn more, visit flbm.org.

the longest-serving U.S. postmaster general, serving under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Four generations of the Grangers lived at the homestead; Antoinette Granger, who died in 1930, was the last family member to live there.
The homestead went on to serve as a retirement home for congregational ministers and their wives as well as the Granger Place School for Girls. In 1946, the Granger Homestead Society, Inc. was formed to preserve, maintain and interpret the site, structures and collections and make them available to the public. The carriage museum followed in 1961.
“The mansion is curated with original pieces that represent each of the four generations of the Granger family and the years of the Granger Place School for Girls,” said Martha Herbik, executive director of the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum. “The three barns of the carriage museum contain the largest carriage collection in Western New York. On display are local and regional sleighs, carriages, wagons, commercial vehicles and agricultural pieces from the days of the homestead.”
Today, the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum offers tours, educational programs, special events and private rentals. The museum has a series of rotating exhibits; its current display features a collection of commercial vehicles.
Its most popular school program is Homestead Days in June, which brings regional schools to the site to learn about 19th century life.
“We are in the midst of restoring the basement kitchen of the mansion, as funding allows, to an 1860 interpretation,” Herbik said. “It will be a valuable addition to our tour program and educational offerings.”
The homestead’s largest fundraising event is the annual Christkindl Market in November. The three-day affair features juried artisans, a Biergarten and food tent, the popular Elf School, daily visits from Santa, and more. On opening day, the mansion transforms into a winter wonderland for the Festival of Trees.
During the year, visitors are drawn in by the museum’s docent-guided tour program. The two-hour interactive tour leads groups through the mansion, carriage collection and the 1822 Walter Hubbell Law Office.
“Our goal at the Granger Homestead, as we move forward, is to keep history relevant, engaging and entertaining for our visitors,” Herbik stated. “Our research is ongoing and our story is ever-expanding.”
The Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum is open May 1 through mid-October. To learn more about the museum and its program and event offerings, visit grangerhomestead.org

For more than two centuries, the 1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse has been a cornerstone of historic movements for equal rights, social justice and peace. Now, the site is preparing to welcome new generations of visitors to a renovated space.
The meetinghouse, part of the Farmington Quaker Crossroads Historic District, is listed on the National Register and is on the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
The meetinghouse was built as the largest Quaker Meetinghouse in Upstate New York. It centered on the Quaker idea of “God in everyone,” as people promoted nationwide debates about equality and respect for Native Americans, women and the Black community. Local Quakers allied with the Seneca nation to secure land rights, organized anti-slavery petitions and supported the Underground Railroad. They also helped organize the 1848 Seneca Falls women’s rights convention.
The meetinghouse’s membership declined by the early 1900s, and the building was sold in 1927 to be used as a barn. In 2006, the Town of Farmington condemned the structure and mandated its demolition. However, the meetinghouse received a reprieve when a group of locals voiced an interest to preserve and restore the building. Their goal was to create a
national center for equal rights with an emphasis on education and economic development through heritage tourism.
“Through this meetinghouse, we hear echoes of voices in the past – urging equal rights for women, Native Americans and African Americans – and inviting us to join that conversation,” stated Treasurer Ann Morton.
From 2007 to 2019, the all-volunteer board stabilized the building, built a new foundation and moved the meetinghouse across the street. “We are working to raise another $650,000 to finish restoration, re-construct the 1841 committee building that once stood behind the meetinghouse, finish the parking lot and walkways and develop creative exhibits for our interpretive center,” said Board President Judith Wellman.
In the meantime, the museum works with local organizations to present offsite programs. To learn more about the meetinghouse, its programs and updates on its restoration, visit farmingtonmeetinghouse.org
“When the restored Meetinghouse is opened in 2026, it will serve both as a community gathering place and as an interpretive center,” said a representative.
“We hope that visitors will be awed by standing in this authentic space, where they will hear epic stories about equal rights in America, where ordinary people took extraordinary actions.”
As golfers stand at the ninth hole tee at Champion Hills Country Club in Victor, they are treated to views of the clubhouse and pool – a perfect conclusion to the game.
“Very often members and guests are watching from the clubhouse deck to see the great shots coming in from the tee,”

said Darlene Sommer, general manager and head golf professional at the club. “This hole is a really fun way to finish your round.”
The par 4 hole is only 346 yards from the Blue Tees, but does present some challenges. There is water just in front of the tee box which presents a hazard along the fairway. On the right side of the fairway there is a steep ravine that leads to trees all the way to the green. The left side of the fairway is completely tree-lined.
The hole was designed with a risk reward option for the longer hitters. There is a large bunker in the middle of the fairway, about 100 yards short of the green in which the fairway runs downhill to the green. This bunker also creates a split fairway which has two other options to choose from.
“You can play it safer and play your drive up the left side, but this usually leaves you with a blind shot to the green,” Sommer said. “Or try to shorten the hole by playing it to the narrower right side but the water, downhill ravine and tree line come into play.”
Golf Club –Hole #18
While the final hole at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor presents a high level of difficulty, it offers a natural
amphitheater surrounding the green.
The par 5 hole is laid out as an uphill approach to the green which is tucked into the trees and surrounded by several bunkers.
“The best angle of approach to the green is from the left side of the fairway,” said David Granata, director of golf at the club. “You want to make sure to avoid the approach and greenside bunkers. You are rewarded if you hit the green as the putting surface is fairly level.”
What brought you to Ontario County?
My parents moved to the area in the late 80s from the Southern Tier. I am a Palmyra-Macedon graduate and never left. In 2017 my second husband, Jeff and I purchased a home in Farmington near the Pumpkin Hook area.
When my parents moved here, one of the first places my mother took us to was Canandaigua. I remember coming down Main Street and seeing just a sliver of the lake. I was hooked. I have loved it ever since.
You’re a licensed optician and have worked for various private practices…why did you decide to start your own business?
I had 25 years of experience and wasn’t sure what was going to happen next. But I knew I still needed to work. I joke a lot and say I helped put a few doctors’ kids through college and thought it was my turn. My long-term goal is that it will allow Jeff to retire when he wants and allow me to hire my son, Dylan, to work with me and take over someday.
When did you establish Sights & Shades?
Why choose Canandaigua as its location?
Having a boutique was my goal. I observed other local optical boutiques with admiration. I thought, “I can do this.” I couldn’t picture my shop anywhere else than Canandaigua. After endless hours of planning and preparing, we opened
in spring 2022 in our first location. In the fall of 2023, an opportunity to move up on Main Street became available. After much contemplation, we took a leap and moved to our new location in January 2024.
What styles of frames do you carry? What are some customer favorites?
My goal is curate a collection of eyewear that is unique to Canandaigua. I carry exclusive lines as well as familiar, loved lines. We also carry sustainable eyewear made from recycled plastics. Besides traditional fitting and filling your prescription glasses. I offer ready readers, cords and children’s sunglasses.
Kaos is a client favorite. When a client selects a Kaos frame, I won’t reorder that frame in that color. It becomes a one-of-a-kind piece for them. I keep a small number of collections on hand to offer the same benefit.
How does Sights & Shades stand out from other eyeglass stores?
When you step into the shop, you are greeted in a welcoming environment. You will most likely find me sitting at a large dining room table at the back. I’ll either select a few frames for you or you can gather some of your favorite options. I feel that this provides a relaxed atmosphere. I want you to take your time. I want you to know you are not just a number to me; I am looking to create a relationship.
I love meeting new people and learning new things from them. I quite enjoy it when the client relationship turns more towards friendship. When someone just stops by to say hello or waves from the sidewalk, it is a simple reward.
What is the key to operating a successful small business?
I feel that the key to running your own small business starts with taking care of you. If you take a moment for yourself, you can offer the better side of you for your client. Networking and staying relevant – these are the biggest takeaways I have learned. Networking with the Chamber and other local groups is a great way to introduce yourself. Staying relevant can be as simple as rearranging your displays and seeing what the trends are in advertising.

Ontario County’s rolling hills and meandering streams offer a natural wonderland for wildlife and intrepid trekkers to explore. Thanks to local organizations, hikers and nature enthusiasts can learn more about the marvels of nature while hitting the trails.
Hikers can enjoy more than 23 miles of trails from dusk to dawn year-round as part of Ontario Pathways.
Established in 1993, Ontario Pathways is a multi-use “rails to trail” built on two abandoned railroad corridors. While one stretches from Stanley to Canandaigua, the other runs between Stanley and Phelps, totaling 23.3 miles.
“The trail is maintained 100 percent by volunteers and supported by membership dues, fundraisers and the occasional grant,” said Ontario Pathways President Tim Wilbur.
The network of trails is available, free of charge, for various non-motorized outdoor recreational activities including hiking, walking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. In addition to the main trails, there are five loop trails that provide 2.2 miles of footpaths through the woods, at the 1964 Train derailment site and along Flint Creek.
Visitors may find some pleasant surprises along certain trails. Starting this June, the Ontario County Arts Council will host outdoor exhibits at three locations on the trail. A section of trail between County Road 10 to County Road 46 in Canandaigua is the Pooh Trail. There, visitors can spot various quotes from A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh stories, characters and iconic locations such as Eeyore’s house. Items including mile markers, a signal tower, water tower and bridges offer evidence of the trails’ past as railways.
Natural wonders abound along the trails as well. There are several “hot spots” along migratory routes for birders to find a variety of birds. Every section of the trail network has a geocaching stash to find. Botanical enthusiasts can find sections of trillium, blooms of goldenrod and fields dandelions. Aquatic creatures spotted along the way include water boatmen, tadpoles, frogs and bottom feeder fish.
The Canandaigua Botanical Society, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary, takes several walks along Ontario County Pathways. In celebration of its sesquicentennial year, the group is welcoming the public to three dozen events; visit canandaiguabotanicalsociety.blogspot.com for more information.
“Since Ontario Pathways was incorporated in 1994, Canandaigua Botanical Society has enjoyed annual botanical walks along the Ontario Pathways,” said Laura Ouimette, coordinator for the society. “The walks are scheduled at different times of the year along different stretches of the trail and generally highlight a different focus.”
In October, Ontario Pathways hosts the Great Pumpkin Walk, its major fundraiser. Guests can take a quarter-mile, family-friendly walk, starting at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, and enjoy 650 to 800 jack-o-lanterns along the way.

Engaging with nature is essential to human health and happiness, according to Cumming Nature Center Director Sarah Jacoby Murphy. “More than just fun, walking in nature engages both the body and the mind, reducing stress and
Cumming Nature Center
connecting us to our environment,” she added. “Hiking has even been shown to increase creativity and improve attention span!”
The Cumming Nature Center was founded by the Rochester Museum & Science Center in 1974. Located between Naples and Honeoye, the nature center contains 900 acres and about 15 miles of trails through a variety of habitats –from low wetlands to upland forests.
“Trails closer to the Visitors Building tend to be flatter and wider, but some of the farther trails are more primitive or cover more strenuous terrain,” Jacoby Murphy explained.
More than 10,000 guests flock to Cumming Nature Center each year where they can hike, cross-country ski and attend events and educational programs. “Most visitors are here for two to three hours, but some will pack a lunch and make a day of it,” Jacoby Murphy said.
There is plenty to see at the nature center. A popular
spot is the majestic “cathedral pines,” located at the start of the Beaver Trail. Wildflowers including trout lily, pink lady’s slipper, bloodroot and trillium appear in the spring and early summer. The meadow areas are ideal for spotting monarch butterflies fluttering around milkweed and beebalm. Chipmunks, frogs and birds are common sights, though Cumming Nature Center is also home to more elusive species such as bobcats and beavers. Beaver ponds and dams and other signs of beaver activity are visible along Briggs Creek.
Cumming Nature Center also hosts a selection of seasonal events and educational sessions. Favorite summer and fall events are Orchestra in the Pines set for July 13, Myco Mania on September 22, and The Enchanted Forest on October 19. Educational programs include guided hikes and workshops on topics like plein air or blacksmithing.
“For a regular day, exploring the exhibits at the Visitors Building and joining one of our educators for a hike or guided program is a great way to have fun and learn something new!” Jacoby Murphy said.
Cumming Nature Center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $3 April to November and $5 December to March. For more information, visit rmsc.org/cumming-nature-center
For some, including, Victor Hiking Trails Chairman David Wright, walking and hiking have health and social benefits. A popular activity in Victor is the Wednesday morning library walkers, where participants take an easy 2to 3-mile hike on the trails. “It allows us to find new places to hike, catch up on the week’s news and have some great comradery with like-minded folks,” Wright said.
Conveniently located between Rochester and Canandaigua, Victor Hiking Trails offers more than 70 miles of free public trails. The paths are open year-round from dawn to dusk, with temporary closures during hunting seasons.
“The Town of Victor had three railways, so the old railbeds make great trails for walking, running, biking and skiing in the winter,” said Wright. “We are fortunate to have hills, valleys, creeks and meadows. Many of the trails have a great vista of the surrounding lands.”
One popular site is Dryer Road Park, which encompasses more than 15 miles of mountain bike trails and attracts riders of all ages and skill levels. Victor Hiking Trails partners with the Victor Town Parks Department to keep all of the trails well maintained, all year long.

“The variety of trails means there are trails for all abilities,” Wright stated.
Visitors to Victor Hiking Trails can spend as much time as they like in nature, whether it be an hour or a whole day. In addition to fellow hikers – the trails are heavily used – nature enthusiasts can spot a range of flora and fauna.
Common sightings have included deer, squirrels, chipmunks and a variety of birds.
“Folks are on the trails walking their dog, getting exercise, using the trail for transportation or just enjoying nature and the peace and quiet,” Wright explained. “Many clubs come to Victor to walk the trails looking to photograph the wildlife.”
The organization provides free monthly guided hikes and hosts a monthly educational hike which ties in local organizations; recent educational hikes have focused on topics such as blacksmithing and tinsmithing, beekeeping and history.
“Our most popular event is National Trails Day, always held on the first Saturday in June,” Wright said. “We provide a continental breakfast, a variety of hikes and bike rides, lunch and snacks. It starts in the morning and runs all afternoon.”
Those interested in joining Victor Hiking Trails can sign up at victorhikingtrails.org and attend its monthly meetings, held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month at Victor Town Hall.
After 64 years at the same location in Canandaigua, the local YMCA has started a new chapter.
The YMCA has been a staple in the community for generations, welcoming hundreds of families. The Canandaigua YMCA was founded in 1905, and in 1959 began operating from the former post office on Main Street. The facility was 60,000 square feet and included amenities such as a swimming pool, wellness center and gymnasium with courts. However, the organization needed to expand to better serve the needs of the community.
“We were landlocked at the former location,” explained Sands Family YMCA Executive Director Jason Gottfried. “And with the amazing support of the Sands Family Foundation, we were in the position to build a new facility.”
Developers presented plans in September 2021 to build a new YMCA at the corner of North Bloomfield Road and North Street. The land was donated by Constellation Brands, Inc., a company founded by Marvin Sands. The Sands Family Foundation donated $13.5 million towards construction, a fundraising program and operational support.
“It was important to the YMCA and the Sands Family Foundation that we stayed in the city limits to be able to continue to serve the City of Canandaigua, while also being a place that afforded us more opportunities to serve the surrounding communities in a bigger way,” Gottfried stated.
The Sands Family YMCA opened on October 2, 2023 as the newest branch of the YMCA of Greater Rochester.
(continued on page 50)
The new 75,000-square-foot facility has an open concept layout with spaces dedicated to small get-togethers, exercise and swimming. Members can connect with each other in various gathering spaces and take classes on knife skills, sauce making, baking and a Junior Chef program in the teaching kitchen. Full-service childcare is available at the
Mickey Sands Child Care Center.
There is a plethora of safe exercise areas available as well. Members have space to try their soccer kicks and other skills in Mickey’s Turf – a turf gym – or work out in a traditional gymnasium. The 18,000-square-foot UR Medicine Wellness Center encompasses three group exercise studios, an indoor track and spaces for strength and cardio exercises.
Those looking for some aquatic fun can make use of two pools, sauna and indoor splash pad at the Prince Aquatic
Since its opening, Gottfried has seen the facility receive a positive response from the community. “We are seeing members from all over Ontario County utilizing our YMCA,” he said. “It has been extremely gratifying and exciting to see the faces in our facility on a daily basis.”
The Sands Family YMCA is living up to its goal of providing more opportunities and programs for its members. New group exercises classes include Les Mills BODYPUMP and GRIT. There is also an expanded selection of yoga classes. The facility plans to start its LIVESTRONG program in the near future; this course will offer patients and survivors of cancer the chance to engage in physical activity while working with a supportive group of staff and peers.
Members of all ages can discover new activities or hone their skills. Kids can take advantage of swimming lessons and youth sports classes. The Sands Family YMCA’s Sandlot Games provides an opportunity for youngsters to play with an instructor and experience different sports.
“We also offer a variety of adult
sports that are open for members to drop in such as pickleball, basketball and volleyball,” Gottfried said. “We have begun to offer teen programming for that population of our membership to experience a service-learning club, focusing on values and individual growth.”
Seniors can visit the Rayburn Family Community Room. There, they can socialize and engage in enrichment programs including crafts, cooking, walking clubs, book clubs, Mah Jong, euchre, lecture series and more. Thompson Health has partnered with the Sands Family YMCA to provide some senior programming.
A variety of open areas and dedicated play areas are ideal for families to enjoy some leisure time. The West Herr Innovation Station welcomes kids and families to create art and conduct STEM projects together. A Play Lab is available for toddlers and parents during the week.
“We also offer family nights and experiences throughout the month,” Gottfried said. “All of this is included as a member benefit.”
As the temperatures rise and the weather becomes more moderate, members can utilize the YMCA’s outdoor spaces. Some classes will move outdoors while other spaces can be used recreationally. “It can also be for our members to come and use for a picnic, play space or just a relaxing day in the sun!” Gottfried exclaimed.
Just as the public has supported and grown the Sands Family YMCA, the organization is dedicated to investing in, and partnering with, the local community. One of the ways is with summer programming for kids.
The Sands Family YMCA partnered with the Town of Canandaigua to offer a full-service summer camp at Onanda Park called YMCA Camp Glacier Lake. The camp, which takes place from late June through August, features activities including archery, crafts, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, among others. Registration is available at rochesterymca.org.
“We’re excited to see the future of our partnerships grow as we do,” Gottfried stated.

You’ve worked in Manhattan and around the world … what brought you to Ontario County?
Working in Manhattan, I’d often come home several weekends every summer and spend time with my parents in the Finger Lakes, visiting wineries on different lakes, trying out great restaurants, hiking trails and walks around Bristol Harbor. When I made the move back to Rochester where I grew up, I started looking for a permanent home. I found the Reed Homestead in Richmond and was so taken with the circa 1803 brick house. The beauty of the countryside with the vistas and proximity to so many nearby lakes helped make the final decision.
What education and experience did you bring to Reed Homestead?
I majored in business, concentrating on merchandising management. The bulk of my career I worked in production and product development supporting buying and design teams. Working with product designs, costing it with factories and working at the factories around the world helped me to look for quality.
When did you establish Reed Homestead? What inspired you to start your business?
Reed Homestead vacation rentals and shop began in 2017. The shop initially was located in a small room in the homestead, and we offered guests the shopping experience during their stay. My husband, Dan, and I wanted to offer a special opportunity for Finger Lakes travelers to experience a historic home and a countryside stay.
Which came first, the shop or the historic vacation rental? How did you acquire them?
The historic vacation rental came first. The homestead, located in Livonia, was for sale and I purchased it in 2012.
What amenities does the homestead provide to guests?
The homestead is set up with lovely furniture, art, books and curiosities that our guests enjoy. With my career, I travelled overseas for more than 17 years and often was away weeks at a time. On my downtime, I loved exploring and collecting novelties from all over. We provide bounty from the vegetable and cut flower garden for our guests and invite them to pick what they need during their stay. The outdoor space is a real treat for guests. We even have a telescope for them to stargaze. To help customers get a taste of the Finger Lakes, we offer coffee, tea and items all from the region.
How much work went into renovating and maintaining the homestead?
It was important to know what needed to be preserved and what could be restored to keep up with today’s modern living. The largest project was restoring the plaster work. I worked with restoration and preservation specialist Peter Trieb, Mike from Vine Valley and the Hogg brothers from Bloomfield. It was great working with skilled tradespeople; they not only do great work but take pride in helping preserve a piece of history.
Dan is an instrumental part of our business. He is behind the scenes, but customers will find him working at
our shop. We do all the homestead cleaning (along with a wonderful neighbor Penny) and he also helps me with the shop – getting the fixtures and working at the store when I travel. He’s a huge part of our success. Also, my sister Patti helps immensely. As we grow, we have more folks in the wings to help us get it done!
What types of products can customers find at your shop on Main Street in Honeoye? What are some customer favorites?
We curate home décor, jewelry, clothing and customized lake products. Customers tell us they enjoy that the store is always fresh and they find interesting finds to help make a gift super special and usually something for themselves! Our Finger Lakes scented candles seems to be an easy go to and pairing it with our designer match books makes a great hostess gift!
What do you enjoy most about operating Reed Homestead (both the shop and the rental property)?
We love people, and it’s been really rewarding having guests return to the homestead for a stay and our shop clients returning – some weekly! We want to provide a memorable experience. Dan and I love meeting people, learning about them and the area and how we can make our businesses meet the needs of the community.
What is the key to operating a successful small business?
Always remember that giving your clients a wonderful experience is key. So much goes into that experience, starting from their first impression; along the way, keep the visit seamless. We want them to leave with a great feeling to share with others and hopefully have them return often.
On any given night in 2023, the Ontario County Department of Social Services (DSS) provided shelter for 21 families, consisting of 67 individuals; this was a 46 percent increase over 2022. As dozens of families face homelessness and financial insecurity in the county, Family Promise of Ontario County is working to help those in need. It is dedicated to “helping families experiencing homelessness and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response.”
The nonprofit organization, which is one of more than 200 Family Promise affiliates across the U.S., was incorporated in 2017. It provided emergency shelter for the first time on September 22, 2018. Family Promise of Ontario County is based out of St. John’s Episcopal Church’s old rectory, located at 185 North Main Street, Canandaigua.
“I cannot think of a better purpose than helping families with children that fall on hard times get out of a homeless situation and onto a path to long term sustainability,” stated Executive Director Todd Bernhardt.
Family Promise of Ontario County offers three core programs for at-risk families: shelter, prevention services and stabilization.
Family Promise receives referrals from local entities including Ontario County DSS, school districts and partnering agencies. From there, Family Promise places families in one of four temporary emergency apartments in Canandaigua and Geneva rented from local landlords. The organization is able to house up to four families at a time.
Once a family’s basic needs are met, the next step is to secure sustainable housing. A case management team meets with the families to create an independent living plan. The team tracks the parents’ progress, provides coaching and accountability, and offers resources. In turn, the parents take classes on financial literacy and good tenancy.
“Our program is a ‘hands up’ program, not a ‘hands out’ program,” Bernhardt explained. “Families in our
(continued on page 58)
shelter program work closely with the case management team to develop and pursue goals that will lead to long term sustainable housing.”
Families that face a 14-day eviction notice can seek prevention services. Family Promise prevents people from being evicted by providing financial support, case management support and landlord mediation. “Preventing families from being evicted and entering homelessness is an essential element of our mission,” Bernhardt stated.
Finally, through its stabilization program, Family Promise ensures that families avoid falling back into homelessness. “Our graduate families know we have their back,” Bernhardt said. “FPOC provides ongoing case management, collaborates with other community nonprofit organizations, and provides resources as needed to ensure families are successful.”
Thanks to the efforts of Family Promise, 130 families – 482 individuals – were able to get the help they needed in 2023. Of the 130 families, 46 went through one of the core programs while 84 were helped with case management, connected to community resources or referred to other community nonprofit agencies.
Families and individuals in need of services can reach out Family Promise of Ontario County at 585-905-3988 or visit familypromiseontariocounty.org.
Family Promise is expanding its reach, thanks to generous local donations. The Molly & Ed Shill Cares Foundation recently purchased the old Cobblestone Manor at 495 North Main Street in Canandaigua; together with Family Promise, they will transform it into Ontario County’s first family homeless shelter. Renovations are set to start this year, with a goal to open in 2025. Once finished, the shelter will be open 24/7 and be capable of serving up to seven families – 29 individuals – at a time.
“Family Promise and the Molly & Ed Shill Cares Foundation are committed to finding ways to increase capacity to be able to better meet the needs in the community,” Bernhardt stated. “This family homeless shelter is just the beginning.”
There are a few opportunities for the general public to support Family Promise. The nonprofit will be present at a Sunday Fun Day on June 30 at Lincoln Hill Farms. Its annual Bed Race is set to take place on July 23 at the Ontario County Fair. Its second annual Golf to End Family Homelessness tournament is scheduled for September 14 at Winged Pheasant Golf Course.
There’s always room for more helping hands. Family Promise is looking for volunteers to help with fundraising, marketing, mailing, babysitting, gardening, cleaning and more. Those interested in donating their time, a financial gift or services can call (585) 905-3988, email Todd Bernhardt at tbernhardt@fpocny.org or visit familypromiseontariocounty.org.
“This community is filled with so many great organizations, individual donors, foundations, and community and business partners that care about working together to help those in the greatest need,” Bernhardt observed. “Solving family homelessness takes a community approach and I love to see how this community pulls together to work towards a common goal.”
