DR. GABRIELA CARRANZA BOARD-CERTIFIED PROSTHODONTIST

DR. JULIAN KAHN PROSTHODONTIST

“We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry & provide a clear path to solving problems.”

Becoming a dentist isn't easy. It takes years of study, the ability to pass rigorous exams, and a steady hand to match a sharp mind. But for Dr. Gabriela Carranza, becoming a dentist wasn't the end of the road. She continued to study advanced dentistry for an additional eight years, specializing in prosthodontics and implant surgery.

If you've never heard of the term 'Prosthodontist' before, not to worry, you aren't alone. The title itself is a mouthful. However, in the world of dentistry, Prosthodontists are dental specialists who have completed at least 3 years of a prosthodontics residency program after completing the initial 4 years of dental school.

Dr. Carranza's addiction to learning more to better serve her patients fueled her to become a Prosthodontist. Since 2015 she has served as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Rochester's Eastman Institute for Oral Health. In 2018 she became the owner of Victor Prosthodontics.

Experts at cosmetic and restorative dentistry, they are often referred challenging cases by other dentists and closely collaborate with them. Services Prosthodontists provide include crowns, hybrids, dentures, implants, bridges, veneers and TMJ solutions.

Q& A WITH THE DOCTORS WHAT HAPPENS THE FI RS T T I ME I S EE A PROSTHOD ONT I S T? "At the first visit to Victor Prosthodontics, either Dr. Carranza or Dr. Kahn will begin by completing a full review of your medical and dental history, including evaluating your diagnostic images. They will also spend time with you to understand your treatment goals - learning more about the outcome that you are looking to achieve. This allows the doctors to create a a customized treatment plan according to your needs.

DR . GA BRI ELA CA RRAN ZA & D R . J U L I A N KA H N VI CT O R P RO ST HO DO NT I C S

As a patient at Victor Prosthodontics you can take comfort knowing that Dr. Carranza and Dr. Kahn are highly trained specialists who are skilled at treating even the most challenging cases."

HOW IS A PROSTHODONTIST DIFFERENT FROM A GENERAL DENTIST? "We tend to go beyond the standard 'bread and butter' dentistry. "We treat patients who have genetic disorders, trauma or neglect, and instead of focusing on a single tooth we evaluate the whole mouth – and thus provide solutions to complex problems."

WHO NEEDS A PROSTHODONTIST? CONTACT US TODAY FOR A CONSULTATION: VICTORPROSTHODONTICS.COM/CONTACT-US 6539 ANTHONY DRIVE, SUITE B VICTOR, NY 14564 (585) 924-4180

“In addition to difficult cases we also see patients who haven’t had a great dental experience in the past and are in need of a second opinion. We take the fear and anxiety out of dentistry for our patients and provide a clear path to solving their problems."

Travel back in time with the Ontario County Historical Society The Ontario County Historical Society was founded in 1902 and its current museum was built in 1914. Today, the museum, located in Canandaigua, hosts permanent and visiting exhibits as well as special events. The Open Hearth Kitchen is the only remaining original exhibit. Inside, artifacts from former homes, establishments and people of Ontario County give a glimpse of early 19th century living. New panels and interactive options will be installed in 2024, according to Executive

Ontario County Historical Society

Director Cody Grabhorn. Each year, the museum hosts a long-term themed exhibit. Its current exhibit, “Let’s Go Have Fun! Glimpses of Recreation in Ontario County, 1900-1965” will be on display until April 2024. “The exhibit is chock full of recreational artifacts and the stories that go with them,” Grabhorn said. “Even if you didn’t grow up in Ontario County, you’ll be sure to relate to the sites and activities featured in this exhibit.” In May 2024, there will be an exhibit on photography in Ontario County from 1850 to 1975. It will showcase local professional and amateur photographers, changes in photographic technology and trends in photography. Additionally, the historical society will host its second virtual winter speaker series. Every month, a special guest speaker will address a topic related to recreation in Western New York. Scheduled presenters are Ansley Jemison from Ganondagan State Historic Site, Brandon Brooks from Genesse Country Village & Museum, Victoria Wolcott from the University at Buffalo and Chris Bensch from The Strong Museum of Play. There is no cost to visit the museum. The Ontario County Historical Society offers several membership options for individuals, families and businesses. Membership supports the innovative programming it offers for all ages and the care for its collections and archives.

“The journey from grape to glass – or grain to glass – is something special,” Belasco stated. “We want memories to be made while enjoying a New York Kitchen experience.” “Wood” you like to go to the library? The Wood Library in Canandaigua has the usual materials that people imagine when they think of libraries – books, magazines and various media – but it also has other collections that aren’t so traditional. It loans out wellness kits, memory kits, teen pride book discussion kits, Dungeons and Dragons starter gaming kits and museum passes. “We also have Wi-Fi hotspots and Firesticks loaded with streaming content for loan and a 3-D printer available for use in-house,” added Executive Director Jenny Goodemote. The library serves as a community hub, offering a variety of programs year-round. Continuous offerings include free adult computer classes, drop-in technology assistance, movie series, teen gaming nights, crafting programs and instructional cooking classes. Children enjoy the Bibliobop Dance party and sensory playtime hosted by Children’s Librarian Mary Ferris. “Our free exercise classes are a hit,” Goodemote said. “Yoga, line dancing, Tai Chi and a weekly walker’s group are just a few ways patrons stay active.” Patrons can access digital library resources from the comfort of their home. Kanopy provides downloadable movies while Libby and Hoopla offer downloadable ebooks and audiobooks. “There is also a Books by Mail program available to homebound patrons through the OWWL Library System,” Goodemote added. There are even a few special features in the winter months. In February and March 2024, patrons can participate in Books Sandwiched In, a lunchtime book review series. From February through April, the library is abuzz with patrons filing their taxes for free with the assistance of AARP. Victor Farmington Library

There are two escape rooms currently open with a third that is set to open in early 2024. “Scott is passionate about bringing you the coolest, most immersive escape rooms in the Ontario County area,” said Susan Joss of Mythical Escapes. The first escape room, Eat or be Eaten, is set in a longabandoned meat packing plant in Florida in 1968. It’s about as scary as a haunted house, so this experience is geared for ages 12 and up. The room can accommodate two to nine players. In Cryosleep, guests are trapped inside a spaceship in the year 2320. They awaken from cryosleep – a form of hibernation – to discover that their cryocells are broken. The objective is to escape from the cells and take control of the ship before the kidnapper awakens. Cryosleep is not as scary as Eat or be Eaten, but there are a few loud noises; Mythical Escapes has a recommended age limit of 8 years old. The room can accommodate two to nine players. The newest room, Trial of Zeus, is designed by Scott. It will take players back to ancient Greece where they will have 60 minutes to solve a version of the labors of Hercules. There is no set age limit. This room will be able to accommodate larger groups. Guests to Mythical Escapes have an hour to solve puzzles and escape. With layers of mystery to unravel and conundrums to resolve, it takes teamwork to complete the tasks at hand. The escape rooms are an ideal experience for group adventures, team building, birthday parties and just plain fun with friends and family.

Stay in control. Ski or board at your own pace and avoid runs that are too advanced. Non-skiers can also have a fun-filled day at Bristol Mountain. At The Cannery, they can relax in front of a fireplace and enjoy local brews, craft whiskey and artisan bites. The Sunrise Café offers Starbucks drinks which guests can sip by one of the outdoor firepits.

“Nordic skiing or snowshoeing at the summit are also fun and low-impact ways to explore the beautiful winter landscape and take in stunning views of the surrounding scenery,” Fuller added. This season is chock-full of events such as the Adult Race League, the 20th annual Scott Delforte Park Jam and the annual Yeti Hunt. On New Year’s Eve, there will be a torchlight parade and fireworks display for visitors. During the Spring Carnival on March 23 and 24, Bristol Mountain will host activities and challenges, culminating with the famous Slush Cup. Connect with nature As the warmer months draw to a close, the Cumming Nature Center in Naples, which is owned by the Rochester Museum & Science Center, prepares to welcome guests for its winter season starting December 13. In addition to its regular activities and programming, the Cumming Nature Center hosts a selection of special events throughout the winter. On December 16, it will hold its annual Winter Solstice Celebration. February events include a winter 5K, Snowga (outdoor yoga) and a moonlit ski. During February Break, visitors can take advantage of ski and snowshoe lessons, day camps for kids, guided hikes and presentations at the Visitor Center. In March, the nature center hosts Maple Sugaring Weekends. “Visitors can devour a tasty, locally-sourced pancake breakfast before heading out on the sugaring trail to learn about the history and science behind making maple syrup,” said Communications and Events Manager Sarah Jacob Murphy. The snow not only provides a prime surface for crosscountry skiers and snowshoers, but also for spotting signs of animals. Trekkers may catch a glimpse of tracks left by rabbits, deer, foxes, even mice. The nature center offers 12 miles of groomed cross country ski trails and three miles of snowshoe trails. In 2024, the Cumming Nature Center’s trail network will connect to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation property, offering backcountry ski options. “Our extensive trail network features a variety of terrain with something delightful for every level of skier,” Murphy said. Visitors can rent skis and snowshoes at the Visitor Center, and take cross country ski lessons or themed hikes on weekends. Younger visitors can visit the Gnome Roam, a magical trail designed for children that only appears in winter. With a variety of programs, events and activities at the Cummings Nature Center, winter can be a magical time to explore the great outdoors. “After your visit, you can warm up back at the building with hot coffee or cocoa, tasty popcorn – which is free with admission! – and explore the exhibits,” Murphy concluded.

Women Leaders Make Their Mark on the Community Meet the recipients and nominees of the 2023 ATHENA Leadership Awards

O

n November 8, the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce honored 11 women for their “professional excellence and exceptional leadership.” These honorees have joined a long list of women who have made significant impacts on the community. Martha Mayhood Mertz founded ATHENA International in 1982 in Lansing, MI to honor women leaders and bring balance to leadership voices worldwide. The ATHENA Awards started to expand to other states, and was brought to Ontario County in 1985 thanks to Randy and Margaret Farnsworth. The Farnsworths collaborated with the then-Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce and the Business and Professional Women’s Club to have Canandaigua become the first city in New York State and among the first in the nation to present the ATHENA Leadership Award. A unique ATHENA Leadership Model, based on the Eight Principles of Enlightened Leadership, was created to reflect the leadership attributes of women. Those eight principles are to inspire, uplift and motivate women to live authentically; learn constantly; build relationships; foster collaboration; act courageously; advocate fiercely; give back; and celebrate. To date, nearly 8,000 leaders have been recognized with the ATHENA Leadership Award in 48 states and

11 countries, including the U.S., Bermuda, UK, China, Canada, Greece, India, Russia, United Arab Emirates, Ghana and Mexico. Kristen Harter receives the ATHENA Leadership Award Kristen Harter, born and raised in Canandaigua, is a strong believer in giving back to her community. As the event coordinator at Nolan’s on Canandaigua Lake and Canandaigua Country Club, her most meaningful leadership role was how she contributed during the COVID pandemic. She created an online take-out program which helped keep all Nolan’s full-time salaried team employed. It also allowed her to connect with the local hospital, nursing homes, police department and other essential workers to be sure they were fed and staying healthy to help keep members of our community safe. All of the ATHENA principles play an active role in Harter’s commitment to leadership; however, building relationships resonates the most with her. She is able to engage and empower her staff, clients and those within the community with whom she is honored to work. Additionally, Harter believes her success has been a direct result of opportunities to work alongside other strong female leaders in the community.

The 38th Annual Ontario County ATHENA Leadership Awards was held November 8, 2023 at Hotel Canandaigua.

Kristen Harter

“I would not be where I am today without the relationships that I am constantly seeking to build, learning from others and working collaboratively on ways to give back,” Harter stated. Harter also served as the assistant director of admissions at Keuka College. There, she was able to successfully mentor and lead one of her fist college recruits into the director of admissions role; it was a proud mentoring moment. At Nolan’s, Harter has increased catering sales over the past five years by more than 62 percent. Through this process, she had the opportunity to mentor three junior staff members who became catering leads and held events on their own. To accomplish this, she trained them to use excellent communication, administration, customer service and attention to detail skills in addition to the sales aspect of the role. These women can now execute any event – which can range from 15 to 200 guests – they are tasked with, utilizing multitasking skills and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment. Harter believes women inspire women by working together and learning from on-the-job training. In addition to mentoring, she developed a training program for all staff that encourages them to get out of their comfort zone and reach their full potential. Elisha Everson is Named the ATHENA Young Professional Award Recipient Community service is very important to Elisha Everson, operations manager at SimcoHR, both in her professional career and personal life. For 17 years, she worked as the manager of communication and events at the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce. During that time, she received her IOM certification for

nonprofit management. She proved to be successful in fundraising, building partnerships, committee management and creating tools/programs for businesses. Everson greatly values the relationships that she built during that time. As events manager for the Chamber, Everson coordinated the ATHENA Leadership Program; during her tenure, the program’s net growth increased by 111 percent. This resulted in raising more funds for women’s scholarships and bringing enhanced awareness to the program’s mission. She also helped initiate and coordinate the ATHENA Connections program in partnership with the ATHENA Steering Committee, FLCC and SUNY Geneseo. Enlisting the pool of ATHENA nominees and recipients, students were mentored on leadership and overcoming obstacles to help bridge the college to career gap. Later, Jennie Erdle-Krampen, director of student life at Finger Lakes Community College, connected with Everson who recruited ATHENA nominees and recipients to share their personal success stories with students. This led the way to forming the Women’s Initiative on Leadership Program/Warrior Series at the college. Three years ago, Everson changed careers to create a new role as a marketing specialist at SimcoHR. Her initiative and drive resulted in her earning the role of operations manager. In her position, Everson provides direction and creates team processes in payroll, HR, benefits and insurance. From 2021 to 2022, Everson served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua and spear-headed events that lead the club to raising the most funds in its 80-year existence. The club earned the “Distinguished” designation while Everson was named “Distinguished Past President” by the Kiwanis NY State District. During that year, she actively served on more than 20 committees, two boards, and was

the program chair for the Finger Lakes Division in the New York District of Kiwanis International. Growing up, Everson followed her parents’ example of giving back to her community. She volunteered by participating in her church band, providing crafting lessons for children, coaching vacation bible school, Christmas caroling, playing music to nursing home residents twice a week, volunteering on a local festival committee and making deliveries to shut-ins. “I was taught to help those who had a need because that is the right thing to do, and that’s how I live today,” Everson stated. “Working with others to initiate change in order to better our community motivates me. The happiness it creates is contagious.” ONChamber.com

Theresa Hill has a drive to learn and grow. She held several positions at the John W. Danforth Company over the past 23 years; now, she is its collections and AP manager. At the company, Hill has coordinated food and school drives, events for Habitat for Humanity and United Way and provided Christmas for veterans’ children. Additionally, she was awarded John W. Danforth’s Power of the People Award, which recognizes employees for going above and beyond their everyday positions to help others. In the community, Hill is an advocate for the American Heart Association, as her father passed from a heart attack at the age of 51. She recently joined the Executive Leadership Team and Executives with Heart Team. This year, Hill was asked to be the chair of the organization’s Heart Walk and Run. Hill also serves on the board for the Rochester chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and helped to get the Buffalo NAWIC chapter reestablished. Supporting and empowering other women in the construction industry is one of Hill’s priorities, as she hopes they continue to pass this along as well.

“The feeling of strangers helping you is indescribable!” Hill stated. “To this day, I love to give back and see the smiles it brings!” Sharon McInroy, executive director of Our Children’s Place, has been interested in community leadership for many years. Her latest outreach efforts include service for Kiwanis and Rotary clubs and serving as Keuka College’s women’s soccer assistant coach in 2001 and Mynderse Academy’s junior varsity coach in 2009. As a Survivors Advocacy Center board member, McInroy created a survey for the all-female staff to highlight their concerns and voices for the agency, which successfully raised morale. Her work also included supporting a re-branding and relocation for increased sustainability of a nearly 40-year-old agency. At Our Children’s Place, McInroy initiated a long- and short-term strategic plan to prevent the closure of the Coordinated Child Development Program (CCDP). When she was appointed as the executive director in 2018, she established fiscal remedies which led to 100 percent employee retention, 90 percent

In 2021, she chaired the team that negotiated paid maternity/paternity leave at FLCC and advocated for flexible work arrangements. She is the president of the Professional Association at FLCC and sits on the governance executive committee of the college, which is roughly 30 percent female leadership. It is important to her that others see female leadership as an attainable option to give back and make a difference.

Sarah Moon is the director of library learning resources at the Charles J. Meder Library at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC). The commitment to student success, meeting the needs of the college and enhancing the quality of life throughout the community is at the core of what Moon does every day. “It is extremely important to pair learning constantly with giving back,” she shared. “The more that I learn, the more I have to share with others.” For the past 17 years, Moon has volunteered on the executive board of the Professional Association Union at FLCC, serving the last three years as its president. Her achievements include six contracts settled to improve the lives of represented staff. As a librarian, Moon is passionate about literacy. Additionally, Fuller works with Do the Right Thing Ontario County and serves as a chair of the Canandaigua Kiwanis Bike Rodeo Committee. Vanessa Goodwin, assistant director of Cobblestone Arts Center, believes inclusion provides multiple opportunities for adults, teenagers and kids with disabilities; an available arts program is a great equalizer. “The visual and performing arts give individuals a chance to tell their story and share with each other,” Goodwin said. “To be able to foster collaboration between individuals and the arts makes for a better society in which we live.” Goodwin joined Cobblestone Art Center during her college years and continued to work there after she graduated in 2006. She eventually became a supervisor of the Day Habilitation program and continued efforts to keep it thriving. As the assistant director, Goodwin advocates for the program and facilitating community classes for all ages and abilities.

Laurie O’Shaughnessy

Laurie O’Shaughnessy Receives Lifetime Achievement Award Laurie O’Shaughnessy, retired executive director of the Canandaigua YMCA, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award this past summer. The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated service to the greater community and its people, over and above what can be expected of one person, without expectation of financial gain. Previous recipients include Susanne Kennedy, Richard McGavern, and Jack Schuppenhauer. Among other selfless investments of her time and talent, O’Shaughnessy is a co-chair of the Ontario County Habitat for Humanity Woman Build Committee; campaign ambassador for the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes; and serves on the Community Campaign Committee of the Sands Family YMCA. Additional affiliations include Neighbor to Neighbor, Professional Women of the Finger Lakes, ATHENA Awards, Thompson Guild, Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua, and NYS YMCA Foundation. In years past, O’Shaughnessy served on the founding committee member of the Arts in the Garden for Sonnenberg Gardens and is a past board member for the Ontario County Chamber of Commerce. She receives this award in appreciation of her unwavering commitment, exceptional accomplishments, and dedication to the youth and adults of Canandaigua and Ontario County. “Laurie is a leader and a collaborator, a creative thinker

and a diligent doer,” said Meg Reed, chair of the steering committee for the Neighbor to Neighbor Fund. “She is forward-thinking, empathetic and is motivated to do what is right in the name of building an organization like the YMCA to be a crown jewel in the greater Canandaigua Community,” said Gail Herman, director of marketing for The Medicine Shoppe. The Ontario County Chamber of Commerce presented the award to O’Shaugnessy during The Q, the organization’s annual membership gathering. The event took place June 28 at The Woodcliff, in front of 150 guests – including family, friends and professional and community leaders from all over the region. Total Solar Eclipse Returns to the Region

N

After Nearly 100 Years

ext year, the Greater Rochester Region and parts of Ontario County will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse. This celestial event will take place on April 8, 2024. The 2024 eclipse is a special event, especially in Upstate New York. Its path will cross Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, touching just the edge of the Finger Lakes. Although the area experienced a 70 percent partial solar eclipse in 2017, it hasn’t seen a total solar eclipse since 1925. And the next one will be a while coming. The U.S. will see its next total solar eclipse in 20 years. NYS will have to wait to see one in 55 years. Meanwhile, the Greater Rochester Region won’t see another for 120 years. “Some folks have described viewing the eclipse as spiritual or deeply personal where everything except for the sun, moon, earth and themselves just melt away,” said Dan Schneiderman, eclipse partnerships coordinator at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC). “A sense of awe and wonder just sweeps over you. It’s a very powerful moment to behold.”

Attendees of Eclipse Day at the Rochester Red Wings on the field after the game to take a group photo with a 10-foot inflatable sun. Photo courtesy RMSC

How the eclipse will unfold A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely obscures the sun’s disk, thus darkening the sky as if it’s an hour after sunset. Viewers will still be able to experience the eclipse if the sky is cloudy or partly cloudy; the cloud cover will simply make the sky darker. If the sky is partly cloudy, there is still a chance to catch a glimpse of the eclipse. “Jupiter and Venus, along with the brightest of stars, should become visible,” Schneiderman said. “The temperature drops by an average of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Animals and plants think that it’s nighttime.” The entire eclipse will take more than two hours to complete. The moon will start to pass in front of the sun at 2:07 p.m. Totality – when the moon completely obscures the sun – will take place at 3:20 p.m. The length of totality will depend on where in the region viewers are located. “The closer to the center line of the path of totality, the longer totality will be. If you are closer to the edges of the path, it will be much shorter,” Schneiderman explained. “For

example, if you are standing at the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium in the heart of Rochester, totality will last three minutes and 38 seconds. However, if you are in Canandaigua, it will last two minutes and 50 seconds. If you are in Penn Yan, it will only last 39 seconds. Knowing where you are in the path of totality is very important.” The whole eclipse ends around 4:33 p.m. when the moon is no longer in front of the sun. “Whatever you’re doing on April 8, 2024, stop whatever you’re doing a few minutes before 3:20 p.m. and go outside,” Schneiderman said. “It is a sight to see at least once in your lifetime.” Safe viewing tactics No matter how tempting it is, looking directly at an eclipse is dangerous. People who want to view the eclipse need proper eye protection. Eclipse glasses are a great tool to use, as they are about 100,000 times darker than regular sunglasses, according to The Planetary Society. With the support of SUNY Brockport, the RMSC has ordered 500,000 pairs of eclipse glasses. Eclipse glasses are available for purchase for $2.50 per pair at the RMSC gift shop, Strasenburgh Planetarium and the Cumming Nature Center. Outside of the RMSC, viewers can find eclipse glasses at local libraries, museums and community organizations. For those who don’t have eclipse glasses, there are other safe ways to watch the eclipse unfold. “If you want to use a welding helmet, we recommend grade 13 or 14,” Schneiderman said. “As a reminder, sunglasses are not strong enough to directly look at the sun.” Some may choose home-made methods, including the classic pinhole projector. Families can craft their own pinhole projector with cardboard box. The same effect can be achieved by using colanders, a peg board, hands interlocked together, even Ritz crackers. “The trick is not to look at the sun through these pin hole devices, but at the projection instead,” Schneiderman stated. A celestial celebration The months – even years – leading up to the eclipse have been an exciting time for the RMSC. It has taken the lead in promoting the eclipse through public talks, outreach at festivals and by lending eclipse-themed attractions to community groups. “Just within 2023, we’ve reached more than 50,000 members of the public in person and have had more than 200,000 people experience our giant eclipse glasses,” Schneiderman said. To celebrate the 2024 eclipse, the RMSC will host ROC the Eclipse from April 5 to 8 across its grounds. The festival will feature hands-on activities, speakers, music, continuous shows in the RMSC Strasenburgh Planetarium, telescopes with solar filters, giant working eclipse glasses, food trucks and more. On the evening of April 6, the RMSC will invite adults ages 21 and above to the Galactic Get Down. Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite space explorers,

enjoy food and drinks and dive into the cosmos with activities across the campus. The eclipse will take center stage on April 8. The RMSC will host a variety of eclipse viewing areas. Meanwhile, a national live stream coverage will play as viewers countdown until totality. Those who can’t make it to Rochester can still enjoy the eclipse in the surrounding area. Viewers who want to have a more singular experience can view the eclipse from their homes. Those who want to share the experience with others can catch it at parks, libraries and local eclipse festivals. The RMSC launched its Community Eclipse Ambassador initiative. The RMSC provided a telescope, solar filter, promotional materials, a sun/moon/earth model, training, pinhole viewers, 1,000 eclipse glasses and $1,000 to each of 50 community organizations in nine counties. Each of these ambassador organizations has been promoting the eclipse within their own communities and will either be running a viewing event or supporting a viewing event on the day of the eclipse. Additionally, the RMSC manages rochestereclipse2024.org where organizations can share information about their own eclipse-related events. “As long as you are with the ones you love and want to experience the eclipse with (and are in the path of totality), then you’re in the best place to enjoy the eclipse,” Schneiderman stated. “I can’t wait to experience totality standing next to my wife while holding my daughter in my arms and taking it all in.” For more information on eclipse events in Ontario County visit visitfingerlakes.com/eclipse-2024.

Cold Weather Cooking Warms the Heart W

ith the colder months upon us, it’s always nice to enjoy a hot, comforting meal! Chefs from around the county have shared some of their popular warm and hearty dishes.

Kindred Fare

Nolan’s

The dishes at Kindred Fare in Geneva are inspired by farmhouse cooking. In the kitchen, Head Chef Max Spittler creates a pork belly rice bowl. This dish features miso-glazed pork belly from Bostrom Farms over a bed of pork fried jasmine rice. Garnishes include Calabrian chili aioli, pickled onions, scallions, sesame seeds and a locally-sourced egg served sunny side up. Guests can experience fine dining at Nolan’s in Canandaigua. There, Head Chef John Palmeri prepares the prime rib. The Certified Angus Beef boneless ribeye is wet aged for 45 days and slow roasted for 12 hours to preserve tenderness. It pairs nicely with garlic smashed potatoes and a glass of red wine. Those looking to taste some European-inspired cuisine can stop by Simply Crepes in Canandaigua. Corporate Executive Chef Robert Yacavonis keeps busy in the kitchen, crafting popular dishes such as Big Daddy Biscuits and Gravy. This dish is served up with two buttermilk biscuit sammies stuffed with scrambled eggs, maple sausage, cheddar cheese and chipotle aioli, smothered in southern sausage gravy.

Kick back and enjoy an innovative culinary experience at KiX ON MAIN in Canandaigua. Chefs Alexander Bacon and Andrew Furdock prepare an array of appetizers, sandwiches and hearty meals. A popular dish is the 12-ounce bone-in prime pork chop which is grilled, served with rosemary over a potato pancake and completed with a mushroom demi-glaze.

Sweet Spring Tidings Once the year turns and spring inches closer, area farms will prepare for maple syrup season. disease, retinal disease and glaucoma.” Although the timing of regular check-ups varies by a person’s age, family history and health, The Eye Care Center’s Dr. Anna Rothstein recommends patients under the age of 50 to see their eye doctor once every three years. For those over age 50, it’s a good idea to see your eye doctor annually. When it comes to everyday eye health, Dr. Rothstein endorses dilated eye exams to catch diseases – even if no symptoms are present, wearing sunglasses, donning safety goggles for home repairs and when playing sports, resting your eyes when using a computer for a long time and taking care of your overall health. “Maintaining healthy eating habits, being active, knowing your family’s health history and quitting smoking all can contribute to good eye health,” Dr. Rothstein stated. Good health starts with good choices Thompson Health, headquartered in Canandaigua, has nearly 900 medical staff members, from physician assistants and nurse practitioners to physicians. The health system, founded in 1904, provides surgical services, primary care for all ages, women’s services, emergency and urgent care, laboratory services, diagnostic imaging services, rehabilitation services, pharmacy, gastrointestinal care and pulmonary care. It also has senior living services, which include a retirement community – both independent and assisted living – and a nursing home.

A full list of offerings can be found at thompsonhealth. com/health-services. In addition to its health services, Thompson Health provides a large selection of health classes and events. Offerings include workshops on stress management and mindfulness, yoga and chair yoga classes and summer camps. The health system also gives school presentations for grades K-12 on topics such as puberty, sexual health, digestion and healthy eating, social emotional learning and vaping/refusal skills. These events are ongoing, based on the community’s input, plus a majority are available free of charge. Organizations and schools can contact Thompson Health to schedule classes and workshops. “Preventative education and skills-based learning provides the tools and resources that allow an individual to make choices that can contribute to their overall health and well-being,” stated Wellness Coordinator Amanda Reynolds. Food can be tasty and healthy Christopher and Samantha Mandrino opened Project LeanNation Canandaigua in May 2022. The Mandrinos have been in the health and wellness industry for more than a decade, were lifelong customers of Project LeanNation and wanted to share their passion for nutrition with the Finger Lakes Region. “We never set out to be in the food business,” the Mandrinos said. “We are in the business of empowering change by supporting our community with healthy meals, education and accountability.” Project LeanNation is a health-inspired nutrition company fueled by a passion for serving others. Its concept came from the idea that we could foster a community where people can learn and grow in all aspects of health

Fitness and fun combine Founded in 2006 by Jeremy Biernat and his wife Sarah, Tall Trainer in Canandaigua provides fitness immersion and personal training. The six-member team is dedicated to helping people improve muscle strength, balance, stamina, energy and more. The fitness immersion sessions meet clients at their fitness level. Areas covered include strength training, cardiovascular training and stretching. The groups are kept small and dedicated to a particular timeslot; patrons work with the same group of people week after week. Tall Trainer typically works with patrons one month at a time, but there is the option to join for longer durations. Personal training is available for those who have bigger or more unique struggles, or perhaps a hectic schedule. “The extra attention helps when someone is trying to learn exercise after injuries or joint replacements, or if someone’s body has gotten significantly weaker,” Biernat explained. Sessions are available in-person and through an online program that features more than 200 follow-along exercise videos. Tall Trainer also has free resources about a variety of topics, from proper exercise for maximum benefit to dealing

with injuries or pain. For more information, email Biernat at jeremy@talltrainer.com. “We want people to be successful even if they never enter our studio,” he said. No matter what your age or fitness goal, Tall Trainer provides a fun, safe environment for all. Staff members greet patrons by name and emphasize posture and technique to help protect them during workouts. Plus, there’s always room for some levity. “The workouts and style change constantly,” Biernat said. “We have theme workouts like pirate day, a pumpkin workout and even Chuck Norris jokes day. We are willing to be silly to make it fun.” Celebrating over a century of community health A branch of the YMCA of Greater Rochester, the Sands Family YMCA has been a part of the greater Canandaigua community for more than 115 years. It recently moved operations from North Main Street to North Street in order to expand the services and size of its operation to better meet the needs of the community. The new facility employs 250 staff members, including more than 64 instructors, coaches and trainers. “We really have a holistic approach to wellness,” said Jason Gottfried, executive director of the Sands Family YMCA. To become a member, individuals and families can sign up at the front desk or online. There are no requirements to join. Those who are restricted by cost can apply for the Experience Scholarship. Members can participate in group or individual fitness options, as this YMCA has an 18,000-square-foot Wellness Center; indoor track and the Prince Aquatic Center which has two pools, a whirlpool, steam room and indoor splash pad. Programming includes new and enhanced fitness classes, open swimming time, lessons for kids and teens in the West Herr Innovation Station, group exercise classes, personal training and a full-day licensed childcare center, the Mickey Sands Child Care Center.

“Our services include more than just physical wellness, as we are a place for gathering and socialization for our seniors and spot for parents and kids to connect are create small communities and groups for activities,” Gottfried observed. The key to maintaining a consistent fitness regimen is community, said Gottfried. That is why the Sands Family YMCA’s goal is to be welcoming to all fitness levels and seeks to ensure everyone has a place. “Our YMCA is made for families to be here and exercising their mind, body and spirit!” Gottfried stated. “The Y is a special place year-round, and these activities open the avenue to continue/start or enhance your fitness or wellness journey. The winter is especially unique because we bring the outdoors in.” Look good and feel good When clients visit Ageless Aesthetics in Canandaigua, they are welcomed into a relaxing environment. There, they will work with the staff to create a tailored treatment plan tailored to “look good and feel good from the inside out,” combining a holistic approach with aesthetics. Ageless Aesthetics and Weight Loss was founded in 2021. It is headed by Ugo Akamnonu, an acute care nurse practitioner. The medical spa specializes in skin rejuvenation, anti-aging, IV therapies and medical weight loss. Skincare services include wrinkle reducers, dermal fillers, Sculptra Aesthetic which replaces lost collagen, Softwave skin tightening and lifting, micro needling, facial chemical peels and clinical care facials. For day-to-day skincare, Akamnonu recommends daily applying sunscreen (at least SPF 30), even on cloudy days. Clients also have the option of a medically supervised weight loss program at Ageless Aesthetics. With medical guidance and ongoing support, participants can exercise and follow a diet regimen. Included are weekly weigh-ins, a review of their food and exercise logs, a monthly in-body composition scan and FDA-approved medications for weight loss. “Skincare – especially medical grade skin care – can slow signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines by 40

maintaining skin elasticity and hydration,” Akamnonu said. “Healthy skin contributes to a more youthful appearance.” Pump up the beat Orangetheory opened in Victor in 2017. The gym is staffed by 12 employees, including coaches who have one of five nationally recognized personal training certificates, are OTFit Certified and professionally certified with AED/CPR training. The gym caters to all fitness levels ages 18 and up and encourages members to bring family members or friends along. The staff work to create a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable and accepted, regardless of their fitness level, age or body type. “Orangetheory workouts are designed to be enjoyable,” stated Paola Horvath, franchise owner. “So relax, let loose and enjoy the sweat!” Orangetheory’s heart rate based workouts set it apart. Its workout classes are centered around strength training exercises and cardio that are essential for burning calories and improving cardiovascular health. “Our OTbeat technology measures your heart rate and performance data in real time so you know your workout is working,” Horvath explained. At its group fitness classes, a certified coach guides participants through five different heart rate zones – resting, easy, challenging, uncomfortable and All Out – by saying when to push harder or pull back. Motivation and support are key, according to Horvath. “The goal is to spend 12 minutes or more with your heart rate elevated in “The Orange Zone” to boost your metabolism, burn fat and burn more calories,” she said. Orangetheory is open 364 days a year, and classes are available throughout the day and evening which makes it convenient for members’ schedules. Plus, the first class is always free at Orangetheory. Those who choose to join can renew their membership month to month. “There are no additional requirements,” Horvath said. “Just bring a water bottle and towel!”

Winter Watering Holes

Hollerhorn Distilling

When the cold winds blow, it’s nice to sip cider, tea or hot chocolate. Then there are times when you’d like something a little stronger. Look no further than the Naple Valley’s wineries and distilleries, which have a wide selection of drinks that pair well with a nice warm meal.

Local flavors collide When Arbor Hill Grapery & Winery was founded in 1987, it had just one building. Today, the family-owned winery has expanded to include a complex of vintage buildings that includes a retail shop, restaurant, wine cellar and food production area. In addition to award-winning wines, Arbor Hill makes gourmet food products including wine jellies, preserves, mustards, syrups and sauces, all of which are made on site. “We offer 24 wines, including reds, whites, rosés and a dessert wine,” said Angela Monaco MacAllister of Arbor Hill. An ideal winter wine is Arbor Hill’s new varietal called Crimson Cabernet, which premiered this fall. It is a dry red that pairs nicely with all meats, red sauce and root vegetables. It is available only in the winery and restaurant. Another great winter wine that is available in many retail locations is the Speedster Noriet dessert wine. This full-bodied, port-style Noiret wine is aged in bourbon barrels. “It is an excellent after dinner treat alone or can accompany a good sharp cheese or a smooth piece of dark chocolate,” MacAllister said. At Brew & Brats, Arbor Hill’s restaurant, diners can

taste craft beers from Bristol Springs Brand and Twisted Rail Brewing alongside brats from Artisan Meats. Brew & Brats is open throughout the year and hosts live music, trivia nights and brewery nights. The winery is open year-round and hosts a selection of activities. As a member of the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail and ROC/FLX Trail, Arbor Hill has promotions and events in conjunction with both trails. For the most up-to-date information, follow Arbor Hill on social media. “We have lots of events in the works,” MacAllister stated. Arbor Hill is open 12 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Reservations are required for wine tastings, which are one hour long and guided by a knowledgeable staff member. Tastings are available Thursday through Sunday. Reservations can be made at thegrapery.com. Meanwhile, wine flights, which are for groups of eight or less, are self-guided and don’t require a reservation. A family tradition continues strong Formerly known as Widmer Winery, Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars is located in the heart of Naples Valley. The sixth generation Hazlitt family continues its tradition – more than 165 years old – of award-winning viticulture and wine production. David Hazlitt and his wife Clarissa Roberts Hazlitt became involved in viticulture in 1852 when they purchased 153 acres in Hector. In 1985, their descendant Jerry Hazlitt and his wife Elaine founded Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards. The Hazlitt family’s wine holdings expanded in 2011 with the purchase of the former Widmer Wine Cellars complex in Naples. The winery is one of the region’s most historic and longstanding wine producers in the nation. It produces world-class wines, wine slushies, hard ciders, fresh popcorn and friendly wine guides in a fun, relaxing atmosphere. “Solera Sherry or Port are delicious dessert wines that we like to enjoy curled up by a fire on a cold winter’s night,” said Stephanie Jarvis, director of marketing. “We also like to make French onion soup using the Solera Sherry and Schooner Red. Bramble Berry is always a great choice as you can make Bramble Berry brownies to pair with it.”

Both the vineyard and cellars welcome families and dogs year-round. Guests can also take a walk along the scenic onemile hiking trail behind the winery. Facility tours are available, but must be reserved in advance. Reservations for the tasting room are recommended for groups of eight or more. Patrons can chat with wine guides as they enjoy a glass or flight. All tastings come with complimentary freshly popped popcorn and a poker chip valued at $3 that can be used for wine, cider or wine seltzer purchases in the gift shop. Seasonal hours vary but can be found at hazlitt1852.com or on Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars’ Facebook page. Enter into the spirit of the Finger Lakes Hollerhorn Distilling is the dream of Melissa and Karl Neubauer, more than 15 years in the making. The couple wanted to create a hub that magnified their collective experiences in the food and beverage industry, building trades, cocktail culture, distilling studies and as musicians. The distillery offers a variety of spirits, all made from NYS grains, fruit and maple syrup. Its trademarked Hollerhorn Tree Spirits are made from fermenting and distilling local maple syrup to produce a spirit akin to rum. Just a few of its products include single malt, rye and bourbon whiskeys; gin; and traditional method fruit brandies. “We live by our mantra of ‘Follow the fruit,’ so we produce brandy right along with the harvest of whatever is in season, and deemed high quality,” Karl explained. “We feel fortunate to live in such a rich farming community, and most of our raw materials come from within 40 miles of our facility!” As winter rolls into the Naples Valley, the Neubauers recommend their aged spirits such as the single malt whiskey, Old Growth Tree Spirit, single barrel bourbon and Empire Rye. Their fruit brandy and whiskey pair well with winter foods. “The brandies offer a little burst of sweet fruit for those darker days, so they can pair with something as light as salad,” Karl said. “The aged brandy can hold up to something as heavy as a roast.” The distillery hosts a wide selection of events throughout the year, including pairing dinners, cocktail education classes, trivia nights and live music all year round. In winter it holds

a Sunday Social Happy Hour series every week from 4 to 6 p.m. Additionally, its Hollerhorn House Concerts feature a diverse variety of artists performing inside the tasting room from November to May; they move outside in the warmer months. Hollerhorn is open 11 Inspire Moore Winery a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday. Reservations for tastings or the full restaurant are not required, but they are strongly encouraged for guests driving in from longer distances or who have a group of six or more. Wines to warm you from the inside From the time they met, Timothy and Diane Moore dreamed of opening a winery. Their wish came true in 2007 when they founded Inspire Moore Winery. They transformed a historic building in Naples – which had previously served as a tavern, stagecoach stop and carriage house – into a boutique winery that produces whites, reds, ice wine and blends. Inspire Moore has a few wines that pair well with winter meals of various sorts. Its Timothy Moore Chardonnay goes well with turkey, ham and stews. The winery’s selection of dry reds, in particular the Truth Dry Meritage blend, pairs beautifully with meats and winter casseroles. Inspiration, a semi-dry red is the ultimate pizza and pasta wine; it also makes a delicious mulled wine. Those who want to sip something by the fire might find Solace, a ruby port-style dessert wine, to be the perfect drink. The winery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. No reservations are required for tasting. Thanks to a covered, enclosed deck outfitted with heaters, visitors can enjoy a drink outside on a wintery day. In the spring, Inspire Moore has a 40- by 100-foot tent set up to host weddings and large events. Finger Lakes Opera provides arias and more Finger Lakes Opera, the only professional opera company in the Finger Lakes Region, was first established in 2012 to be an arm of SUNY Geneseo and gave its first performance in 2013. It operates as a producer, as opposed to a presenter. In 2016, it became a nonprofit and moved its base of operations to Canandaigua, where its shows performed at Canandaigua Academy every summer. During the pandemic, it pivoted to an online performing platform and resumed in-person performances in summer 2021. At the same time, its base of operations relocated to Rochester with the understanding that the company would maintain a presence in Canandaigua. “Finger Lakes Opera has grown from a company that only presented two to three productions in the summer to one that, by fiscal year-end 2023, will have delivered an expanded Summer Festival (five ticketed events) and more than 35 engagement programs,” said Executive Director Elizabeth Long. Finger Lakes Opera rents each venue in which it performs. Past venues include Fort Hill Performing Arts Center and West Herr Auditorium Theatre. The opera company holds Professional Company Member status with OPERA America and runs summer and fall Young Artist sessions. “FLO’s mission is to gather together the best cast and crew for its annual grand mainstage operas and help develop the

next generation of opera stars,” Long stated. Productions include a yearly summer festival featuring performances by young artists; the finale is typically a fully staged opera showcasing renowned international singers. In addition, Finger Lakes Opera has a year-round presence through engagement programming. This past winter and spring, it delivered 10 programs at elder care homes in collaboration with Cobblestone Arts Center. During the summer and fall, it provided 20 more programs. The majority of Finger Lakes Opera’s engagement programming is free. While there are no shows scheduled until February, you can learn about Finger Lakes Opera by visiting fingerlakesopera.org. Something’s always happening at the Smith Step into history as you enter the Smith Opera House in Geneva, home of the Smith Center for the Arts. The Richardsonian Romenesque-style theater, which opened in 1894, has operated under no less than three different names and has been saved from demolition at least twice. Today, the opera house features an Art Deco opulence and seats 1,319 visitors. “Don’t miss seeing a show in this incredible venue on the National Register of Historic Places!” stated Smith Center for the Arts Executive Director Susan Monagan. In past decades, the Smith has welcomed a variety of shows including swing bands, concerts, movie showings and college and high school plays. Famous musicians who have performed on its stage include Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Gordon Lightfoot. There’s even more fun in store in the coming months including musical performances covering rock and jazz and a juggling show. Upcoming shows include the Vanaver Caravan’s production of “Into the Light” in December, “Giraffes Can’t Dance – The Musical” in March and The Machine Performs Pink Floyd in April, plus many more.
